Abstract:In this paper, we associate with isometries of CAT(0) cube complexes specific subspaces, referred to as median sets, which play a similar role as minimizing sets of semisimple isometries in CAT(0) spaces. Various applications are deduced, including a cubulation of centralizers, a splitting theorem, a proof that Dehn twists in mapping class groups must be elliptic for every action on a CAT(0) cube complex, a cubical version of the flat torus theorem, and a structural theorem about polycyclic groups acting on CAT(0) cube complexes.

Abstract:We exhibit a variety of groups that act properly and even cocompactly on median graphs (a.k.a. one-skeletons of CAT(0) cube complexes), with quasi-isometric groups that do not admit any proper action on a median graph. This answes a question of Niblo, Sageev and Wise. Our examples are all quasi-isometrically trivial central extensions of certain cubulated groups.

Abstract:Median spaces are spaces in which for every three points the three intervals between them intersect at a single point. It is well known that rank-1 affine buildings are median spaces, but by a result of Haettel, higher rank buildings are not even coarse median. We define the notion of ``2-median space'', which roughly says that for every four points the minimal discs filling the four geodesic triangles they span intersect in a point or a geodesic segment. We show that CAT(0) Euclidean polygonal complexes, and in particular rank-2 affine buildings, are 2-median. In the appendix, we recover a special case of a result of Stadler of a Fary-Milnor type theorem and show in elementary tools that a minimal disc filling a geodesic triangle is injective.

Coarse obstructions to cocompact cubulation

Abstract:We provide geometric methods to both lower- and upper-bound the large-scale dimension of CAT(0) cube complexes quasiisometric to a given group $G$. When these bounds overlap, this provides obstructions to $G$ being cocompactly cubulated. More strongly, it prevents $G$ from being a coarse median space. As applications, we show that many free-by-cyclic groups cannot be cocompactly cubulated, and that any tubular group with a coarse median is virtually compact special.

Abstract:We provide a systematic description of the automorphism groups of specially cocompact CAT(0) cube complexes. We show that these groups are topologically finitely generated, present a method to explicitly obtain generating sets, and prove a dichotomy on their size. Furthermore, we show that, under some extra assumptions, the normal subgroup known as Aut^+ is simple, non-discrete, and tdlc. In particular, we obtain a new class of simple, non-discrete, tdlc groups that are accessible to further study. Finally, we study the relative size of Aut^+ in the automorphism group, providing a sufficient condition for its closure to be finite index and presenting a common example where it is not even cocompact.

Median quasimorphisms on CAT(0) cube complexes and their cup products

Abstract:Cup products provide a natural approach to access higher bounded cohomology groups. We extend vanishing results on cup products of Brooks quasimorphisms of free groups to cup products of median quasimorphisms, i.e., Brooks-type quasimorphisms of group actions on CAT(0) cube complexes. In particular, we obtain such vanishing results for groups acting on trees and for right-angled Artin groups. Moreover, we outline potential applications of vanishing results for cup products in bounded cohomology.

Abstract:We provide a new geometric characterization for the spine of untwisted outer space of a right-angled Artin group, constructed by Charney, Stambaugh, and Vogtmann. Abstract:We consider geodesically convex optimization problems involving distances to a finite set of points $A$ in a CAT(0) cubical complex. Examples include the minimum enclosing ball problem, the weighted mean and median problems, and the feasibility and projection problems for intersecting balls with centers in $A$. We propose a decomposition approach relying on standard Euclidean cutting plane algorithms. The cutting planes are readily derivable from efficient algorithms for computing geodesics in the complex.

Abstract:We prove the arborescence of any locally finite complex that is $CAT(0)$ with a polyhedral metric for which all vertex stars are convex. In particular locally finite $CAT(0)$ cube complexes or equilateral simplicial complexes are arborescent. Moreover, a triangulated manifold admits a $CAT(0)$ polyhedral metric if and only if it admits arborescent triangulations. We prove eventually that every locally finite complex which is $CAT(0)$ with a polyhedral metric has a barycentric subdivision which is arborescent.

Abstract:We show that every graph product of finitely generated abelian groups acts properly and cocompactly on a CAT(0) cubical complex. The complex generalizes (up to subdivision) the Salvetti complex of a right-angled Artin group and the Coxeter complex of a right-angled Coxeter group. In the right-angled Artin group case it is related to the embedding into a right-angled Coxeter group described by Davis and Januszkiewicz. We compare the approaches and also adapt the argument that the action extends to finite index supergroup that is a graph product of finite groups.

Rigidity phenomena and the statistical properties of group actions on $\text{CAT}(0)$ cube complexes

Abstract:We compare the marked length spectra of some pairs of proper and cocompact cubical actions of a non-virtually cyclic group on $\text{CAT}(0)$ cube complexes. The cubulations are required to be virtually co-special, have the same sets of convex-cocompact subgroups, and admit a contracting element. There are many groups for which these conditions are always fulfilled for any pair of cubulations, including non-elementary cubulable hyperbolic groups, many cubulable relatively hyperbolic groups, and many right-angled Artin and Coxeter groups. For these pairs of cubulations, we study the Manhattan curve associated to their combinatorial metrics. We prove that this curve is analytic and convex, and a straight line if and only if the marked length spectra are homothetic. The same result holds if we consider invariant combinatorial metrics in which the lengths of the edges are not necessarily one. In addition, for their standard combinatorial metrics, we prove a large deviation theorem with shrinking intervals for their marked length spectra. We deduce the same result for pairs of word metrics on hyperbolic groups. The main tool is the construction of a finite-state automaton that simultaneously encodes the marked length spectra of both cubulations in a coherent way, in analogy with results about (bi)combable functions on hyperbolic groups by Calegari and Fujiwara. The existence of this automaton allows us to apply the machinery of thermodynamic formalism for suspension flows over subshifts of finite type, from which we deduce our results.

CAT(0) geometry of complex curve complements and families

Abstract:Motivated by the question of whether braid groups are CAT(0), we investigate the CAT(0) behavior of fundamental groups of plane curve complements and certain universal families. If $C$ is the branch locus of a generic projection of a smooth, complete intersection surface to $\PP^2$, we show that $\pi_1(\PP^2\setminus C)$ is CAT(0). In the other direction, we prove that the fundamental group of the universal family associated with the singularities of type $E_6$, $E_7$, and $E_8$ is not CAT(0).

Abstract:On this paper we will present a construction of a CAT(0) cube complex (an infinite cube), on which the uncountable family of Grigorchuk groups $G_\omega$ act without bounded orbit. Moreover, if the sequence $\omega$ does not contain repetition, we prove that the action is proper and faithful. As a consequence of this result, this cube complex is a model for the classifying space of proper actions for all the groups $G_\omega$ with $\omega$ without repetition. Abstract:We show that for many right-angled Artin and Coxeter groups, all cocompact cubulations coarsely look the same: they induce the same coarse median structure on the group. These are the first examples of non-hyperbolic groups with this property. For all graph products of finite groups and for Coxeter groups with no irreducible affine parabolic subgroups of rank $\geq 3$, we show that all automorphism preserve the coarse median structure induced, respectively, by the Davis complex and the Niblo-Reeves cubulation. As a consequence, automorphisms of these groups have nice fixed subgroups and satisfy Nielsen realisation.

Abstract:We revisit the topic of probability measures on CAT(0) cube complexes and prove that an amenable group acting on a CAT(0) cube complex, regardless of dimension, necessarily preserves an interval in the Roller compactification. In the finite dimensional case, we prove that there must be an orbit of cardinality $2^N$, where $N$ is bounded by the dimension. This is a slight extension of the author's previous Tits' Alternative.

Abstract:Quadric complexes are square complexes satisfying a certain combinatorial nonpositive curvature condition. These complexes generalize 2-dimensional CAT(0) cube complexes and are a square analog of systolic complexes. We introduce and study the basic properties of these complexes. Using a form of dismantlability for the 1-skeleta of finite quadric complexes, we show that every finite group acting on a quadric complex stabilizes a complete bipartite subgraph of its 1-skeleton. Finally, we prove that C(4)-T(4) small cancelation groups act on quadric complexes.

Abstract:A finite-dimensional CAT(0) cube complex $X$ is equipped with several well-studied boundaries. These include the Tits boundary (which depends on the CAT(0) metric), the Roller boundary (which depends only on the combinatorial structure), and the simplicial boundary (which also depends only on the combinatorial structure). We use a partial order on a certain quotient of the Roller boundary to obtain the simplicial Roller boundary. Then, we show that the Tits, simplicial, and simplicial Roller boundaries are all homotopy equivalent, $Aut(X)$--equivariantly up to homotopy. As an application, we deduce that the perturbations of the CAT(0) metric introduced by Qing do not affect the equivariant homotopy type of the Tits boundary. Along the way, we develop a self-contained exposition providing a dictionary among different perspectives on cube complexes.
