Abstract:In this study, a narrow band gap semiconductor ZnFe2O4 is prepared first and then a wide band gap semiconductor ZnO is used to modify it by using hydrothermal method under the participation of the chelating agent nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), which will be removed in the process of high temperature baking. The structure and composition of ZnFe2O4/ZnO heterojunction were characterized by using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). In order to improve the photocatalytic activity of ZnFe2O4/ZnO heterojunction under visible light irradiation Ag nanoparticles were loaded on its surface by using a very simple and special method namely silver mirror reaction at room temperature without agitation. The methyl orange (MO) was taken as model dyes to illustrate the photocatalytic performance of synthesized products on visible light irradiation. Maximum degradation of 84% for MO was achieved when one 85 W ordinary household energy-saving lamp was used as light source and ZnFe2O4/ZnO/Ag as multicomponent photocatalyst.
The preparation of visible light-driven ZnO/Ag2MoO4/Ag nanocomposites with effective photocatalytic and antibacterial activity

Abstract:Photocatalytic technology has been attracting considerable attention due to its low cost and environmental friendly properties. In this work, a novel ZnO/Ag2MoO4/Ag (ZAA) nanocomposite was prepared by an ultrasonic-irradiation method as an efficient visible-light-driven photocatalyst. The structure and photocatalytic property of the photocatalyst were studied by XRD, SEM, FTIR, XPS, TEM, UV–vis DRS and PL Spectroscopy, respectively. The results indicated that the Ag2MoO4 nanocomposites were successfully decorated on the ZnO sheets which grabbed Ag NPs. Benefiting from local surface plasmon resonance effect of metallic silver and the formation of heterojunctions between the counterparts of ZnO and Ag2MoO4, it effectively suppresses recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, which can enhance good photocatalytic properties and antibacterial activities. An optimal photocatalysis of ZAA with molar ratio of ZnO to Ag2MoO4 at 40:1 performed the highest degradation rate for rhodamine B under visible light irradiation. In addition, over 99.999% of Gram-negative E. coli and 99.846% of Gram-positive S. aureus were reduced by ZAA-40 nanocomposites within 60 min in comparison to pure ZnO sheet. These results demonstrate that ZAA is a promising photocatalyst, making it a prospective strategy to overcome current challengers in the use of organic pollutant degradation and the photocatalytic antibacterial area.

Synthesis of Ag@CuO nanohybrids and their photo-enhanced bactericidal effect through concerted Ag ion release and reactive oxygen species generation

Abstract:Ag and CuO in the form of nanoparticles have been widely used in our daily life as antibacterial agents, through releasing Ag ions and generating reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this work, we demonstrate that by synthesizing Ag@CuO nanohybrids with core-shell configurations, their bactericidal activity can be synergistically enhanced compared to the respective constituents. Upon AM 1.5G light illumination for short durations, the measured minimum inhibitory concentrations of the Ag@CuO nanohybrids show a significant decrease against both Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus bacterial strains, requiring only 7% and 34% of those when conducted in the dark. The spread plate results demonstrate that with nanohybrid concentrations of 11.0 and 21.9 mg L-1, at least 7 orders of magnitude decrease in Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus colony forming units is achieved, when the Ag@CuO nanohybrids are exposed to light illumination for 10 min. The effect of illumination is found to induce Ag+ release and enhance 1O2 generation, which act concertedly to facilitate the remarkable photo-enhanced bactericidal effect.

Abstract:Due to unique physicochemical properties, magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO NPs) have shown great potential for various applications, including biomedical and environmental remediation. Moreover, the physiochemical properties of MgO NPs can be tailored by metal ion doping that can be utilized in photocatalytic performance and in the biomedical field. There is limited study on the photocatalytic activity and biocompatibility of silver (Ag)-doped MgO NPs. This study was planned for facile synthesis, characterization, and photocatalytic activity of pure and silver (Ag)-doped MgO NPs. In addition, cytotoxicity of pure and Ag-doped MgO NPs was assessed in human normal umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Pure MgO NPs and Ag-doped (1, 2, 5, and 7.5 mol%) MgO NPs were prepared via a simple sol-gel procedure. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), photoluminescence (PL), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to characterize the prepared samples. XRD results showed the preparation of highly crystalline NPs with no impurity peaks. TEM and SEM studies indicate smooth surfaces with almost spherical morphology of MgO NPs, and Ag-doping did not change the morphology. Elemental composition study suggested that Ag is uniformly distributed in MgO particles. Intensity of the PL spectra of MgO NPs decreased with increasing the concentration of Ag dopants. In comparison to pure MgO NPs, Ag-MgO NPs showed higher degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye under UV irradiation. The improved photocatalytic activity of Ag-MgO NPs was related to the effect of dopant concentration on reducing the recombination between electrons and holes. Cytotoxicity studies showed good biocompatibility of pure and Ag-doped MgO NPs with human normal umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). These results highlighted the potential of Ag-doped MgO NPs in environmental remediation.

Abstract:Nanocomposites are effective methods for the treatment of microbial infections. In this work, zinc oxide nanoparticles and silver nanoparticles were synthesized by a simple and mild method, and successfully loaded on polydopamine-modified montmorillonite (PDAMt) to prepare nanocomposites (ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt) with potent antibacterial ability. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) showed that the nanoparticles in ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt were quasi-spherical, and the particle size ranged from 5 nm to 45 nm. The energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS)-mapping verified the presence of Zn, Ag, O, Al, Si and C elements in the synthesized ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt. In addition, the antimicrobial activity of ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt was also tested against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). Due to the synergistic antibacterial effect between zinc oxide nanoparticles and silver nanoparticles, ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt exhibited higher antiseptic activity than silver nanoparticles supported polydopamine-modified montmorillonite (Ag/PDA-Mt) and zinc oxide nanoparticles supported polydopamine-modified montmorillonite (ZnO/PDA-Mt). The biocompatibility of ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt was evaluated by cytotoxicity assay. The results demonstrated that the ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt nanocomposites have potential for antibacterial applications.

A MXene@AgAu@PDA nanoplatform loaded with AgAu nanocages for enhancing catalytic activity and antibacterial performance

Abstract:With the rapid development of social industrialization, environmental problems seriously threaten people's health, especially water pollution. Therefore, there is an urgent need to construct a multifunctional nanoplatform for different scenarios. Two-dimensional MXene@AgAu@PDA nanosheets loaded with AgAu bimetallic nanocages have been prepared by a one-step method. First, the in situ generated MXene@Ag is used as an auxiliary template, and then HAuCl4 and dopamine are added for in situ redox-oxidizing polymerization reactions to obtain AgAu catalytic nanocages and the protective polydopamine (PDA) layer which can improve the stability and biocompatibility. MXene and PDA have excellent photothermal conversion ability while hollow AgAu nanocages have strong absorption in the near-infrared region and a local surface plasmonic resonance effect. In comparison to the catalytic reaction rates under dark and room temperature conditions, the catalytic kinetic rate of MXene@AgAu@PDA nanosheets under near-infrared irradiation increases from 0.13 to 0.69 min-1 mg-1. Density functional theory (DFT) is used to study the electron transfer behavior between AgAu nanocages and MXene nanosheets, and the mechanism of the enhanced catalytic reaction rate is analyzed. Besides, due to its Ag ions and photothermal coupling antibacterial properties, 40 μg mL-1 MXene@AgAu@PDA nanosheets inactivates nearly all E. coli and S. aureus after irradiation with near-infrared light for 6 min.
Fabrication of a Double-Shell Ag/AgCl/G-ZnFe2O4 Nanocube with Enhanced Light Absorption and Superior Photocatalytic Antibacterial Activity.

Abstract:Development of highly efficient photocatalysts is a primary goal in the photocatalysis domain among which reusable composites with a synergistic photocatalytic effect have attracted extensive interest. The ability of catalysts to capture light determines their photocatalytic effect, and porous or hollow photocatalysts are more conducive to the entry and reflection of light. The goal of this research is to develop a type of visible-light-driven, double-shell photocatalyst with high antibacterial activity and excellent cycling stability. Photocatalysts were fabricated using hollow graphitized ZnFe2O4 nanospheres (G-ZnFe2O4) as the carrier. After G-ZnFe2O4 was functionalized with a polydopamine (PDA) template layer, Ag nanoparticles (NPs) and cubic AgCl NPs were in situ generated on the surface of the PDA/G-ZnFe2O4 nanospheres successively. Then, the PDA template was removed using KOH solution, and double-shell Ag/AgCl/G-ZnFe2O4 nanocubes (referred to as DAGZNs) with excellent photocatalytic antibacterial activity were constructed. The DAGZNs showed excellent antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The efficient synergistic photocatalytic antibacterial activity coupled with magnetic separability and recyclability of DAGZNs make them potential for practical application in water purification and environmental protection. The method of designing and synthesizing double-shell structures to enhance photocatalysis may also be extended to synthesis of other photocatalytic and optical materials.
Construction of the Z-scheme Cu 2 O-Ag/AgBr heterostructures to enhance the visible-light-driven photocatalytic water disinfection and antibacterial performance

Abstract:Constructing Z-scheme heterojunctions is considered to be an excellent strategy for enhancing the photocatalytic performance of compounds. In this study, visible-light-driven (VLD) Z-scheme Cu 2 O-Ag/AgBr photocatalysts with high efficiency were constructed with the aid of a photo-reduction precipitation technique. The photocatalytic properties and different mass fractions of Ag/AgBr nanoparticles were in situ deposited on the surface of an octahedral Cu 2 O. The results indicated that nearly 98.7% methyl orange (MO) could be degraded within 90 min using Cu 2 O-Ag/AgBr. Due to the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by Cu 2 O-Ag/AgBr, 99% antibacterial efficiency was achieved by Cu 2 O-Ag/AgBr against Gram-positive/Gram-negative bacteria. After four consecutive cycles of Cu 2 O-Ag/AgBr, the photocatalyst remained relatively stable and exhibited excellent stability and reusability. Various analyses demonstrated loading Ag/AgBr nanoparticles into composites can enhance their optical properties, accelerating the transport of photogenerated carriers. The Z-scheme heterojunction between Ag/AgBr and Cu 2 O provided higher redox capability. Moreover, the photocatalytic properties of the composites can be boosted via the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect from a small amount of metallic Ag. Lastly, the mechanism of photocatalysis occurrence was elucidated by exploring the essential reaction substances in the process, and primary active species were discovered to be the photogenerated holes (h + ), •O 2 ̅ , and •OH. This study indicated that the as-prepared Cu 2 O-Ag/AgBr exhibited great potential to be applied in wastewater treatment.

Observation of excellent photocatalytic and antibacterial activity of Ag doped ZnO nanoparticles

Abstract:Nanotechnology is the platform with the greatest promise for scientific advancements. One of the advancement is improvement in photocatalytic and antibacterial performance. This work was undertaken to synthesize un-doped and silver (Ag) doped zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) using an inexpensive wet chemical method and to investigate the structural and optical properties, photocatalytic and antibacterial activity. The structural analysis from X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of un-doped and Ag-doped ZnO NPs displayed hexagonal wurtzite crystal structure and shifting in the peak position confirms the incorporation of Ag in ZnO lattice. Morphological study done by scanning electron microscope reveals spherical shaped NPs and an increase in grain size with Ag doping, the HRTEM images showed the nanocrystalline nature of particle. The Raman spectra showed variation in vibrational characteristics of the nanoparticles with Ag doping. The functional groups were analyzed using Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The optical properties were investigated by UV-visible and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopic techniques. The Ag-doped ZnO NPs have a notably lower band gap than that of un-doped ZnO NPs, i.e. from 3.04 eV to 2.81 eV as studied by UV-visible spectra. The PL study showed decrease in intensity at near band edge emission with increase in Ag doping concentration indicating reduction in the free charge carrier recombination. These variations in the properties play major role in the enhancement of photocatalytic and antibacterial activity with increase in Ag doping concentration as compared to un-doped zinc oxide nanoparticles. The photo degradation efficiency of 99.12 ± 1% against Methylene Blue dye was achieved in the shortest period of 45 minutes ever reported when irradiated under the solar light and efficiency of 97.33 ± 1% was achieved in 15 min under Xenon Short Arc lamp. The antibacterial study was conducted using the Agar well diffusion method where the diameter of the zone of inhibition (ZOI) was increased from 14 mm to 20 mm and 13 mm to 18 mm against the bacteria Escherchia coli and Bacillus subtilis respectively, rendering this material suitable for photocatalytic degradation and antibacterial applications.
Synergistic augmentation of dielectric and photocatalytic properties of ZnO via Ag nanoparticle integration

Abstract:This study investigates the effect of Ag incorporation on dielectric and photocatalytic properties of the ZnO matrix. The synthesized samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), diffused reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elemental dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), impedance spectroscopy, and UV–visible infrared spectroscopy. XRD confirmed the successful synthesis of Ag/ZnO nanocomposites without any secondary phase. SEM micrographs showed discs and rods-like morphology of ZnO and Ag NPs, respectively. Furthermore, an increased agglomeration was also observed in the nanocomposite as the concentration of Ag NPs was increased in Ag/ZnO Nanocomposite. The dielectric study revealed that the incorporation of Ag nanoparticles (Nps) increased the dielectric constant of ZnO by 100 times (10 2 Hz), with minimal tangent loss in Ag/ZnO (20 %). Complex plane plots disclosed the presence of two relaxation processes with different relaxation times in the synthesized samples. The metallic nature of Ag NPs contributed to the reduction of the charge transfer resistance of the nanocomposite. Furthermore, the enhanced dielectric behavior was ascribed to the formation of micro/nano capacitors due to the interaction of conductive Ag NPs with relatively less conducting ZnO grains. The photocatalytic performance of the synthesized nanocomposites was also evaluated for the degradation of methylene blue. The presence of Ag NPs increased the photocatalytic activity due to its enhanced conductivity and sluggish electron-hole recombination. Ag/ZnO (20 %) nanocomposite showed the best photocatalytic activity with a reaction rate of 0.239 min −1 . The exceptional dielectric properties demonstrate the potential of Ag/ZnO nanocomposites for low-frequency applications. Furthermore, the enhanced photocatalytic activity of ZnO upon Ag inclusion discloses the potential of the synthesized nanocomposite for water remediation applications.

Construction of MIL-53(Fe) metal-organic framework modified by silver phosphate nanoparticles as a novel Z-scheme photocatalyst: Visible-light photocatalytic performance and mechanism investigation

Abstract:Novel heterostructure photocatalysts consisted of MIL-53(Fe) and silver phosphate (Ag3PO4) were successfully developed through a simple in situ precipitation strategy in this work. The photocatalytic activities of the as-synthesized samples were assessed via multiple antibiotics degradation, including tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC), chlortetracycline (CTC) and deoxytetracycline (DCL). All the obtained Ag3PO4/MIL-53(Fe) composites exhibited much more superior photocatalytic activities than pure MIL-53(Fe) and Ag3PO4. Especially, the optimal composite with 1:3 mass ratio of Ag3PO4:MIL-53(Fe) (APM-3) displayed the best photocatalytic activity, for which the removal of antibiotics was 93.72% (TC), 90.12% (OTC), 85.54% (CTC) and 91.74% (DCL) under visible light irradiation for 1 h. The APM-3 also exhibited good photostability and recyclability. Three-dimensional (3D) EEMs (excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy) was applied to further investigate the TC degradation process, and the TC intermediates were identified by high-performance liquid-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). The possible degradation pathway for TC was also discussed. In addition, electron spin resonance (ESR) measurement and quenching experiments verified that O2 −, OH and h+ radicals all worked during the degradation process. In the end, a possible Z-scheme heterostructure model composed of MIL-53(Fe), metallic Ag and Ag3PO4 was proposed, in which the small reducible Ag nanoparticles functioned as a center for charge transmission. Powerful redox ability and effective separation of photoinduced carriers can be achieved in this Z-scheme heterostructure system. The findings of this work could offer a novel way to design MOF-based materials for remediation of contaminated water.

Abstract:Abstract This study aims at the preparation of antimicrobial nanoparticles hybrid based on silver (Ag) doped Zn 1-x Cu x O. Zn 1-x Cu x O nanocomposite Ag-doped prepared via wet chemical route, co-precipitation, and impregnation method, respectively. The inclusion of silver in the nanocomposite did not change its structure. However, the insertion of CuO into the ZnO structure has no impact due to the similarity of Cu ion radius with Zn ion radius (0.74 toward 0.73 Å). Hybrid nanomaterials characterized by XRD, FT-IR, and FESEM technique. The effect of loading of CuO nanoparticles into ZnO nanomaterials investigated on their antimicrobial behavior. For this purpose, CuO with a variety ratio doped on the ZnO nanoparticles, and then Ag entrapped by impregnation methods. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) measurements were carried out to measure the antimicrobial behavior of ZnO(Ag) and mixed hybrid Zn 1-x Cu x O(Ag) towards gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria and fungus. gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria were generally more sensitive to ZnO and CuO nanoparticles, respectively. Then, these hybrid nanomaterials can be an excellent candidate for both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

Abstract:The construction of heterojunction has been considered as an effective strategy to achieve charge separation and improve photocatalytic activity. In this work, stable reduced Cu2O/Ag/Bi2MoO6 (Cu2O/Ag/BMO) nanocomposites with high-efficiency antibacterial activities were synthesized via a simple wet chemical method. After illumination of 30 days, Cu2O/Ag/BMO still showed excellent antimicrobial capability against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus. The photoluminescence spectroscopy was used to analyze the electrons and holes recombination efficiency of samples, which suggested Cu2O/Ag/BMO could promote electron-hole separation and extend the lifetime of photogenerated carriers. The results of photocurrent responses test suggested that the photocurrent density of Cu2O/Ag/BMO was four times stronger than the Cu2O, which indicated the higher separation efficiency of electrons and holes pairs for the formed Cu2O/Ag/BMO. Besides, density functional theory proved that Ag nanoparticles could promote the electrons transfer from the Bi2MoO6 layer to the Cu2O layer which facilitated the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Therefore, electrons and holes could better participate in the redox reactions and then generate more active substances (•OH and •O2 –), improving the antimicrobial ability. Therefore, the prepared Cu2O/Ag/BMO composites has a great application prospect in the antifouling field.

Abstract:With the rapid development of industry, organic pollutants and bacterial contamination in water resources are becoming increasingly severe. Photocatalysis is an effective approach to address this problem. ZnO, as a traditional n- type semiconductor photocatalyst, has a relatively wide bandgap, which results in a narrow range of light absorption and quick recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, thus limiting its development. In this work, we constructed p -type CuO/ n -type ZnO heterojunction nanofibers (HNFs) to extend the light harvesting range and improve the migration and separation of the photoinduced electrons and holes across the hetero-interface through. Afterwards, Ag nanoparticles were introduced into above HNF matrix to reinforce the photocatalytic activity. Results showed that, upon simulated sunlight irradiation, the Ag NPs-decorated p- type CuO/ n- type ZnO HNFs exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activities. After 20 min of simulated sunlight irradiation, approximately 98.5% of MB was degraded by 1.0 at% Ag NPs-decorated p- type CuO/ n- type ZnO HNFs. Additionally, after 10 min of irradiation, the disinfection efficiency of HNFs for Escherichia coli was > 99.99%. It is worth noting that this study has opened up a new pathway for the rational design of p-n junction photocatalysts with superior charge transfer properties, to achieve remarkable photocatalytic disinfection and degradation activities.

Investigation of Mg Doped ZnO Nanoparticles Decorated with Ag for Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation

Abstract:In this research, an eco-friendly technique was employed to devising undoped ZnO and Mg doped ZnO decorated with Ag nanoparticles by using leaf extract of ficus religiosa plant in which Ag is deposited by ultrasonic waves. The shape, chemical composition, morphology, size, structure, and optical properties were calculated with respect to pure ZnO and Mg-ZnO/Ag with various quantities of Mg (Mg: 0.5%, 1%, 1.5% and 2%). X-ray diffraction analysis gave confirmation of hexagonal wurtzite phase of crystalline structure for ZnO component and rod, spherical, rectangular shapes for Mg-ZnO/Ag with crystalline size range 9 nm to 46 nm. SEM explore the crystalline morphology of Mg-ZnO/Ag at nanoscale regime, EDX confirmed the composition of prepared samples consist on Mg, ZnO and Ag, FTIR technique highlighted the presence and impact of various functional groups and PL explored the energy transfer pattern and recombination rate decrease and fluctuations. The band gap calculated reduced with doping of Mg from 3.64 eV to 3.27 eV explored by tauc plot. Photocatalytic activity was explored for all samples that revealed that the Mg-ZnO/Ag (1%) exhibited maximum degradation 93% for methylene blue and 87% for rhodamine B. Kinetic reaction of all fabricated samples and degradation efficiency was explored. Comparison was made to explore the optimal efficient photocatalysts for both dyes. Moreover, stability of Mg-ZnO/Ag checked after six cycles of regeneration was 83% for MB and 74% for RhB. Therefore, current work presented a novel doped nanocomposite that could be effective for reducing water pollution and various environmental applications.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is an effective method with the potential to eliminate pharmaceutical compounds from water sources. Manganese ferrite (MnFeO 3 ), a type of multiferroic perovskite catalyst, has attracted significant attention due to its small band gap, however its application was limited due to its high recombination rate and low quantum efficiency. It was therefore aimed to improve the properties of MnFeO 3 by doping silver (Ag)-particles. In this study, Ag–MnFeO 3 photocatalysts with different Ag content (1–3 mmol%) were synthesized by performing a facile hydrothermal method. The as-prepared samples were characterized using x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (DRS), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, showing successful addition of Ag-particles with the MnFeO 3 structure. Then, the as-synthesized materials were investigated as: (i) photocatalysts for degradation tetracycline (TC) antibiotic and (ii) antibacterial agents for bacteria. The Ag–MnFeO 3 catalyst demonstrated superior catalytic performance (95.7%), which was 1.6 times higher than that of pristine MnFeO 3 (59.7%). The positive effect was ascribed to oxygen vacancies, enhanced light absorption ability, and lower recombination rate. The Ag–MnFeO 3 catalyst also showed satisfactory removal performances in real water matrices. Furthermore, radical trapping tests depicted that the superoxide radicals played a dominant role in the photodegradation system. In addition, Box–Behnken design (BBD) was performed to determine the optimum conditions, which were determined as catalyst dosage of 0.45 g/L, initial TC concentration of 5.10 mg/L, and initial solution pH value of 3.69. In terms of antibacterial tests, the incorporation of Ag into the MnFeO 3 structure greatly increased the antimicrobial resistance against bacteria. Our findings disclose that the incorporation of Ag into the MnFeO 3 structure can be regarded as a feasible and promising approach to improve both photocatalytic degradation and antibacterial performances.

Antibacterial and Photocatalytic Activity of ZnO/Au and ZnO/Ag Nanocomposites

Abstract:The use of a combination of nanoparticles as antimicrobial agents can be one strategy to overcome the tendency of microbes to become resistant to antibiotic action. Also, the optimization of nano-photocatalysts to efficiently remove persistent pollutants from wastewater is a hot topic. In this study, two composites ZnO/Au (1% wt.) and ZnO/Ag (1% wt.) were synthesized by simple aqueous solution methods. The structure and morphology of the r nanocomposites were analyzed by structural and optical characterization methods. The formation of AuNPs and AgNPs in these experiments was also discussed. The antimicrobial properties of ZnO, ZnO/Au, and ZnO/Ag nanomaterials were investigated against Gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus). The results showed an increase of 80% in the antimicrobial activity of ZnO/Au against Pseudomonas aeruginosa compared with 30% in the case of ZnO/Ag. Similarly, in the case of the S. aureus strain tests, ZnO/Au increased the antimicrobial activity by 55% and ZnO/Ag by 33%. The photocatalytic tests indicated an improvement in the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) under UV irradiation using ZnO/Au and ZnO/Ag nanocomposites compared to bare ZnO. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency of ZnO after 60 min of UV irradiation was ∼83%, while the addition of AuNPs enhanced the degradation rate to ∼95% (ZP2), and AgNP presence enhanced the efficiency to ∼98%. The introduction of noble metallic nanoparticles into the ZnO matrix proved to be an effective strategy to increase their antimicrobial activity against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus, and their photocatalytic activity was evaluated through the degradation of MB dye. Comparing the enhancing effects of Au and Ag, it was found that ZnO/Au was a better antimicrobial agent while ZnO/Ag was a more effective photocatalyst under UV irradiation.
High-Efficiency Photodynamic Antibacterial Activity of NH2-MIL-101(Fe)@MoS2/ZnO Ternary Composites

Abstract:Bacterial infections are a serious threat to human health, and the development of effective antibacterial agents represents a critical solution. In this study, NH2-MIL-101(Fe)@MoS2/ZnO ternary nanocomposites are successfully prepared by a facile wet-chemistry procedure, where MoS2 nanosheets are grown onto the MIL-101 scaffold forming a flower-like morphology with ZnO nanoparticles deposited onto the surface. The ternary composites exhibit a remarkable sterilization performance under visible light irradiation toward both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, eliminating 98.6% of Escherichia coli and 90% of Staphylococcus aureus after exposure to visible light for 30 min, a performance markedly better than that with NH2-MIL-101(Fe)@MoS2 binary composites and even more so than MoS2 nanosheets alone. This is ascribed to the unique electronic band structure of the composites, where the separation of the photogenerated carriers is likely facilitated by the S-scheme mechanism in the NH2-MIL-101(Fe)@MoS2 binary composites and further enhanced by the formation of a p-n heterojunction between MoS2 and ZnO in the ternary composites. This interfacial charge transfer boosts the effective production of superoxide radicals by the reduction of oxygen, and the disproportionation reaction with water leads to the formation of hydroxy radicals, as attested in spectroscopic and microscopic measurements. Results from this study highlight the significance of structural engineering of nanocomposites in the manipulation of the electronic band structure and hence the photodynamic activity.

Abstract:The increasing complexity of environmental pollution posed a higher requirement for the development of environment-governed functional materials. Herein, to achieve desired synergy and multiple functionalities of eco-friendly nanomaterials, a micelle-mediated metal assembly strategy was proposed to integrate plasmonic Ag nanoparticles into MnO x modified mesoporous silica hosts by metal-modified neutral dodecyl amine surfactant, correspondingly, a multifunctional mesoporous /m-SiO 2 (AMSs) nanocomposite was obtained. The characterization results revealed that the introduction of Mn and alteration in the amount of Ag mediated the formation of a special mesostructure and nanometric morphology of the silica host. Bearing a low Ag loading (r.t. of Ag/Mn = 1/2), ultrafine Ag nanoparticles were embedded in the inner core of mesoporous silica nanospheres. While assembly with a higher Ag concentration affected the morphology of the obtained AMSs and resulted in rich Ag nanoparticles on the exterior surface of mesoporous silica. By this strategy, ultrafine Ag nanoparticles and well-dispersed amorphous MnO x species were coupled into the mesoporous silica to reach a special configuration and integrated functionality. The obtained AMSs-3 can effectively inactivate bacteria ( E. coli , S. aureus, and P. aeruginosa ) with a prolonged inhibitory effect, rapidly reduce harmful nitrophenol, as well as photothermally assist water evaporation (evaporation rate of 1.51 kg m −2 h −1 , receiver efficiency of 87%). This work provides versatile environment-governing functional nanomaterials for both highly effective antimicrobial and environmental remediation.
