Abstract:HYPERRHINOLALIA means the audible passage of air through the nose at an inappropriate time, namely during the pronunciation of all English vowels and consonants with the exception of m, n, ng, and neighboring vowels. I say they are "audible" because according to Schmidt 1 some air may pass through the nose unperceived by the ear of the listener, an amount so small that it can pass under ordinary pressure an opening of about 3 mm. between the velum and the posterior wall of the pharynx. "Audible" refers to the acoustic acuity of the observer. An ear not too well trained in this respect may not detect small degrees of hyperrhinolalia. Gutzmann's ah-ee test 2 may alleviate the difficulty of diagnosis. Tactile and visual tests are also of some help. If one touches slightly the alae nasi, preferably with the tip of the middle finger, hyperrhinolalia manifests itself by vibrations, especially
