Abstract:The combination of treatment wetlands (TWs) with microbial electrochemical technologies (MET) is often studied in the lab to improve the performance and decrease the footprint of TWs. In this article we evaluated the long-term performance of four pilot-scale vertical sub-surface flow TWs for major pollutants' and organic micropollutants' removal from domestic wastewater. Three of them were filled with electroconductive material and operated under saturated (MET SAT), unsaturated (MET UNSAT) and unsaturated-saturated (MET HYBRID) conditions while the fourth one was a saturated intensified aerated system (AEW) filled with gravel. The MET-TWs achieved significant removals of COD (>78 %) with no clogging issues at the maximum applied OLR (249 g COD m-3 d-1) while under these loading conditions TSS removal exceeded 84 %. Among all electroactive TWs, UNSAT could remove 25 g NH4-N m-3 d-1 through nitrification when peak ammonium loading rate was applied; however this removal was significantly lower than AEW (35 g NH4-N m-3d-1). No important removal of P was observed in all systems with the exception of MET-SAT were precipitation reactions of P with iron occurred when anaerobic pretreated wastewater was used. The removal of the sum of studied organic micropollutants ranged between 70 ± 18 % (MET UNSAT) to 91 ± 4 % (AEW) and improved with feeding pulses increase. Moderate to high removal of specific microcontaminants was observed depending on the target compound, the studied system and the operational conditions. AEW and MET HYBRID systems complied with the limits set by EU for wastewater discharge to non-sensitive water bodies and for Class B water reuse. Scale-up calculations for a settlement of 500 PE showed that these systems require much less area per PE (0.51 m2 PE-1) comparing to conventional TWs while the operational cost was calculated to 0.07 € m-3 for the AEW and 0.02 € m-3 for the MET HYBRID.

Abstract:Microbial electrolysis cells (MEC), coupled with sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), was used to degrade sulfate-rich wastewater that is deficient in electron donors. However, because of the impact of electric double layers (EDLs), salt crystals formed on the electrode, thereby potentially retarding the continuity of sulfate removal during the whole operation. Here, an improved MEC reactor using intermittent electric field was established. It works better in sulfate removal for a longer period, which was higher than the conventional MEC reactor by 2.18-fold after 10 days. Observation on the activity of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) and ATP revealed that the formation of salt crystals on the electrode led to plasmatorrhexis. Conversely, improved reactor contributed to extracellular substances production and prevented the salt crystal formation, which was conducive to biofilm formation as further verified by detection through SEM. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests showed that the cathodic microorganisms accelerated electron transfer whereas the salt crystals increased the charge transfer resistance. High-throughput sequencing analysis illustrated that improved reactor could maintain the competitiveness of SRB in the microbial community for a longer period. Moreover, the improved reactor resulted in high species diversity, thereby showing the significant resistance of the microorganisms to arduous environments. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:This study developed microbial fuel cell (MFC)-based hybrid constructed wetland systems using different filter media, i.e., organic (biochar), construction (sand), and rejected (iron particle, concrete particle, and stone dust) materials, and evaluated the performance of the developed systems for treating landfill leachate. The mean ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal percentages within the hybrid systems ranged between 91 and 98%, 90 and 98%, 97 and 99%, 88 and 93%, 93 and 97%, respectively, despite higher pollutants concentration in leachate wastewater. The aerobic environment in the cathode compartment (due to intermittent load) and free-draining of wastewater (from cathode to anode compartment) supported electrochemically inactive, active pollutants removal in the electrodes integrated first stage vertical flow (VF) wetlands. The second stage electrodes integrated horizontal flow (HF) wetlands supported electrochemical-based organic removal and nitrification because of efficient organic removal in the previous VF wetland stages. Nitrogen, phosphorus accumulation percentages in plant tissues ranged between 0.3 and 7%, 0.4 and 14%, respectively. Nutrient removal was achieved through chemical and microbial routes. The biochar-packed VF wetland produced a maximum power density of 20.6 mW/m2. The coexistence of unsaturated, saturated media in the partially saturated HF wetland maintained the required environmental gradient between the electrodes and improved operational performance.
Enhanced performance and microbial interactions of shallow wetland bed coupling with functional biocathode microbial electrochemical system (MES)

Abstract:It is essential to remediate the polluted urban river, which endangers the aquatic creatures and affected human body's senses. The treatment wetland combined with microbial electrochemical system (MES) used for the remediation is becoming a new research focus due to its ideal pollutants removal efficiency and small footprint. Here this paper provided a kind of novel shallow wetland bed coupling with close-circuit microbial electrochemical system (WB-CMES) to remove pollutants in surface water. In contrast to the shallow wetland bed coupling with open-circuit MES (WB-OMES) and the shallow wetland bed without MES (WB), the enhancing effects and pollutants removal pathway were evaluated. After 62-day operation, average TN removal efficiency in WB-CMES was 87.7%, which was 19.7% and 13.8% higher than that of WB-OMES and WB respectively. The rate coefficient k of NO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup>-N degradation in WB-CMES was 1.6 and 1.8 times higher than that in WB-OMES and WB. The results of chlorophyll, protein and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in WB-CMES were 27.3%, 44.3% and 12.9% higher than those in WB. The microbial community structure analysis indicated that electroactive bacteria on anode like Desulfobulbus could oxidize organics and generate electrons to compensate cathode, meanwhile, cathode could enrich more species of functional bacteria like Rhodobacter, Pirellula, Hyphomicrobium, Thauera, which had a synergistic effect on oxygen reduction, nitrogen removal and plant growth. The results indicated that oxygen produced by submerged plants could be utilized by the oxygen-reducing functional biocathode of MES and the proper aerobic and anoxic environment might enhance nitrate removal mainly through simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND), aerobic denitrification and anammox. This research provided a novel technology with advantages of simple operation, flexible configuration, easy scale-up and low cost for application in remediation of highly polluted surface water.

Abstract:The microbial electrochemical systems (MESS) demonstrate advantages in wastewater treatment for enhanced organic contaminants removal by electron flow. Comprehensive investigation of anode metabolism for fermentable substrate, represented by glucose, under electrochemical regulation was essential to understand the operation mechanism of MESs. The anodic COD (chemical oxygen demand) degradation reaction w simulated as a superposition of first-order (background COD remove) and zeroorder reaction (anode-respiring COD remove) to COD concentration. Even though the background COD degradation wasn't directly related with anodic respiration to form electron flow, it was accelerated by increasing current rather than the changed electrode potentials. Statistically, the kinetic constant of background COD degradation generally exhibited a positive linear correlation (R-2 = 0.7822) with current. In overall COD removal increment enhanced by electron flow, the improvement of background COD degradation accounted for a relatively stable proportion of 33%. The anode-respiring and background metabolism successively exhibited competition (100-500 mg L-1) and synergy (500-1500 mg L-1) with increasing COD concentration, before being restricted by excessive COD loading (above 1500 mg L-1). The stratification and function differentiation were observed in anode biofilm. The dark-red dense inner layer close to anode surface was directionally enriched anode-respiring bacteria (ARB) like Geobacter (16.23%) and Pseudomonas (13.04%), while the white incompact outer layer separated inner layer from exogenous bacteria interference as a transition layer and assisted for the degradation of fermentable substrate. The anode biofilm helped for the progressive degradation of glucose and the formation of stable electrochemical active inner layer under persistent exogenous bacteria interference. Abstract:Microbial fuel cells implemented in constructed wetlands (CW-MFCs), albeit a relatively new technology still under study, have shown to improve treatment efficiency of urban wastewater. So far the vast majority of CW-MFC systems investigated were designed as lab-scale systems working under rather unrealistic hydraulic conditions using synthetic wastewater. The main objective of this work was to quantify CW-MFCs performance operated under different conditions in a more realistic setup using meso-scale systems with horizontal flow fed with real urban wastewater. Operational conditions tested were organic loading rate (4.9+-1.6, 6.7+-1.4 and 13.6+-3.2 g COD/m2.day) and hydraulic regime (continuous vs intermittent feeding) as well as different electrical connections: CW control (conventional CW without electrodes), open-circuit CW-MFC (external circuit between anode and cathode not connected) and closed-circuit CW-MFC (external circuit connected). Eight horizontal subsurface flow CWs were operated for about four months. Each wetland consisted of a PVC reservoir of 0.193 m2 filled with 4/8 mm granitic riverine gravel. All wetlands had intermediate sampling points for gravel and interstitial liquid sampling. The CW-MFCs were designed as three MFCs incorporated one after the other along the flow path of the CWs. Results showed no significant differences between tested organic loading rates, hydraulic regimes or electrical connections, however, on average, systems operated in closed-circuit CW-MFC mode under continuous flow outperformed the other experimental conditions. Closed-circuit CW-MFC compared to conventional CW control systems showed around 5% and 22% higher COD and ammonium removal, respectively. Correspondingly, overall bacteria activity, as measured by the fluorescein diacetate technique, was higher (4% to 34%) in closed-circuit systems when compared to CW control systems.
Organic media-based two-stage traditional and electrode-integrated tidal flow wetlands to treat landfill leachate: Influence of aeration strategy and plants

Abstract:Landfill leachate treatment employing normal and electrode-integrated constructed wetlands is difficult due to the presence of significant amounts of organic compounds, which frequently impede the progression of microbial-based aerobic pollutant removal pathways. As a result, this study examines the effect of supplementary air availability via intermittent and continuous aeration strategies in improving organic, nutrient, and coliform removals of the unplanted, planted (normal and electrode-integrated) two-stage tidal flow constructed wetlands designed to treat landfill leachate. The constructed wetlands were filled with coal and biochar media and planted with Canna indica. Mean chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and coliform removal percentages of the externally aerated two-stage unplanted, only planted, planted-microbial fuel cell integrated constructed wetland systems ranged between 96 and 99%, 82 and 93%, 91 and 98%, 86 and 96%, respectively, throughout the experimental campaign. External aeration inhibited the development of a dominant anaerobic environment within the media of the wetland systems and improved overall pollutant removal. The electrode-integrated planted tidal flow wetlands produced better effluent quality than the unplanted or only planted tidal flow systems without electrode assistance. The first stages of the three wetland systems achieved an additional 5-7% COD, 7-12% TN, and 15-22% coliform removal during the continuous aeration period compared to the corresponding performance of the intermittent aeration phase. The pollutant removal performance of the second-stage wetlands decreased during the continuous aeration phase. The media composition supported electrochemically active and inactive microbial-based pollutant removal routes and the chemical adsorption of pollutants. Nitrogen and phosphorus accumulation percentage in plant tissues was low, i.e., 0.4-2.2% and 0.04-0.8%, respectively. During the continuous aeration period, the electrode-integrated tidal flow constructed wetlands achieved higher power density production, i.e., between 859 and 1432 mW (mW)/meter3(m3). This study demonstrates that external aeration might improve pollutant removal performance of the normal, electrodes integrated tidal flow-based constructed wetlands when employed for high organic-strength wastewater treatment such as landfill leachate.
Scalability of microbial electrochemical technologies: Applications and challenges

Abstract:During wastewater treatment, microbial electrochemical technologies (METs) are a promising means for in situ energy harvesting and resource recovery. The primary constraint for such systems is scaling them up from the laboratory to practical applications. Currently, most research (∼90%) has been limited to benchtop models because of bioelectrochemical, economic, and engineering design limitations. Field trials, i.e., 1.5 m3 bioelectric toilet, 1000 L microbial electrolysis cell and industrial applications of METs have been conducted, and their results serve as positive indicators of their readiness for practical applications. Multiple startup companies have invested in the pilot-scale demonstrations of METs for industrial effluent treatment. Recently, advances in membrane/electrode modification, understanding of microbe-electrode interaction, and feasibility of electrochemical redox reactions have provided new directions for realizing the practical application. This study reviews the scaling-up challenges, success stories for onsite use, and readiness level of METs for commercialization that is inexpensive and sustainable.
Long-term operation of cathode-enhanced ecological floating bed coupled with microbial electrochemical system for urban surface water remediation: From lab-scale research to engineering application

Abstract:Ecological floating bed coupled with microbial electrochemical system (ECOFB-MES) has great application potential in micro-polluted water remediation yet limited by low electron transfer efficiency on the microbial/electrode interface. Here, an innovative cathode-enhanced EOCFB-MES was constructed with nano-Fe 3 O 4 modification and applied for in-situ remediation both at lab scale (6 L, 62-day operation) and demonstration scale (2300 m 2 , 1-year operation). The cathode-enhanced ECOFB-MES exhibited superior removal in TOC (81.43 ± 2.05%), TN (85.12% ± 1.46%) and TP (59.80 ± 2.27%), much better than those of original ECOFB-MES and anode-enhanced ECOFB-MES in the laboratory test. Meanwhile, cathode-enhanced ECOFB-MES boosted current output by 33% than that of original ECOFB-MES, which made a great contribution to the improvement of ectopic electronic compensation for pollutant decontamination. Notably, cathode-enhanced ECOFB-MES presented high efficiency, stability and durability in the demonstration test, and fulfilled the average concentration of COD (9.5 ± 2.81 mg/L), TN (1.00 ± 0.21 mg/L) and TP (0.10 ± 0.04 mg/L) of effluent water to meet the Grade III (GB 3838–2002) with stable operation stage. Based on the KOSIM calculation, the removal loads of cathode-enhanced ECOFB-MES in carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus could reach 37.14 g COD/(d·m 2 ), 2.62 g TN/(d·m 2 ) and 0.55 g TP/(d·m 2 ), respectively. According to the analysis of microbial communities and functional genes, the cathode modified by Fe 3 O 4 made a sensible enrichment in electroactive bacteria (EAB) and nitrogen-converting bacteria (NCB) as well as facilitated the functional genes expression in electron transfer and nitrogen metabolism, resulting in the synergistic removal of carbon in sediment and nitrite in water. This study provided a brandnew technique reference for in-situ remediation of surface water in practical application.

Abstract:Recycling urban tail water for ecological base flow and landscape use offers a reliable solution for the problem of water resource shortage. But the long-term direct discharge of urban tail water can aggravate the eutrophication of surface water based on the present drainage standard of sewage plant. It is of great significance to develop low-cost and low-energy ecological technologies as transitional region between urban tail water and surface water. In this study, a pilot-scale ecological bed coupled with microbial electrochemical system (EB-MES) was established to treat urban tail water deeply. The system was operated for 96 days from June to September. Average TN removal efficiency in EB-MES under the condition of submerged plant coupled closed-circuit MES could reach 59.0 ± 16.6 %, which was 82.7 % and 38.1 % higher than that of open-circuit EB-MES and MES without plants, respectively. Microbial community structure testing indicated that multiple nitrogen metabolic mechanisms occurred in the system, including nitrification, electrode autotrophic denitrification, anammox, simultaneous nitrification and denitrification, and aerobic denitrification, which results in better denitrification efficiency under tail water. Our research provided a novel ecological technology with advantages of high-efficiency, low-energy and low-carbon and verified the feasibility in pilot scale for application in the advanced treatment of urban tail water.

Abstract:The sanitation resource recovery is a contemporary strategy fully in line with the concept of the circular economy. The by-products from constructed wetlands technology include treated water, nutrients, biomass and energy. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the sewage treatment and resources recovery in constructed wetlands operating in a tidal flow configuration, coupled with microbial fuel cells (MFC). The following factors were evaluated: two types of filling material (gravel #0 and #1) and two cultivated species, Pennisetum purpureum sp. (BRS capiaçu elephant grass) and Musa spp. (dwarf cavendish banana). The treatment cycle in each CW lasted a total of 8 h. An increase in the levels of dissolved oxygen was seen due to the tidal flow configuration, enabling the biochemical processes to remove contaminants and produce an electric current. Acceptable removal efficiency was seen for most monitored parameters. The mean values for the COD output concentration were 119, 109, 117 and 98 mg L −1 ; removal efficiency 80%, 83%, 80% and 82%; and for wetlands with banana in gravel #1 (BG1), banana in gravel #0 (BG0), capiaçu in gravel #1 (CG1) and capiaçu in gravel #0 (CG0), respectively. The plant and type of filling material affected the performance of the CW, with the CG0 system being the most efficient in COD removal, and standing out for productivity. The plant and filling material affected energy production in the MFC, where the CG0 CW was again the most efficient, with maximum values of up to 970 mV. The results show that tidal flow CW can function with reduced cycle times and, if coupled with MFC, are able to produce energy. This study integrates high-load tidal flow CW with MFC at a pilot scale, offering combined benefits of wastewater treatment and energy generation. By using locally adapted species, the research provides valuable insights into optimising system performance and understanding the impact of tidal flow cycles, enhancing the practical application of CW with MFC in tropical regions.

Abstract:Microbial electrochemical technologies (MET) are increasingly being considered for environmental remediation applications, mainly for their unique capability to enhance microbial degradation processes in an environmentally sustainable manner (e.g., without requiring addition of chemicals and with little or even no energy consumption). To date, however, the application of MET for the remediation of saturated and unsaturated soils contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons (PH) remains challenged by a number of environmental and operational factors which have, so far, hampered a more rapid deployment of the technology. In this context, this critical review has comprehensively analyzed the recent scientific literature dealing with electrobioremediation of PH-contaminated soils, in order to disentangle the impact of key process parameters (e.g., type of electrodes, system configurations, design criteria) and environmental conditions (e.g., soil characteristics and strategies to manipulate thereof, type of contaminants, composition of PH-degrading communities) on the overall remediation performance. Interestingly, the analysis revealed that MET-based soil electrobioremediation has been successfully applied to remove a variety of PH (from alkanes to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and mixtures thereof) from soils displaying a broad range of electric conductivities (0.2–6 mS/cm), using different system configurations (from simple graphite rod buried within soils to more complex tubular electrode assemblies). To date, the limited radius-of-influence of electrodes buried in contaminated soils, which is typically lower than 50 cm, appears to be a main limiting factor which requires specific strategies (e.g., amendment of soil with conductive materials/minerals and/or surfactants) to be properly addressed. Finally, the study highlights the urgent need for pilot-scale testing to confirm the promising results obtained at the laboratory-scale under more controlled, yet often far-less representative, conditions as well as to catalyze the commercial and societal interest towards this novel technology.
Pollutant removal performance of the bioenergy-producing constructed wetlands under unstable loading conditions: Carbon and metallic electrode

Abstract:This study reports the pollutant removal performance of the waste jhama brick media-based four carbon and metallic electrode-based planted wetlands designed to treat hardly degradable real municipal wastewater. The wetland systems were operated under unstable loading conditions that were artificially created by introducing sequential constant hydraulic loading (250 mm/d) followed by short-term rapid hydraulic load increment (1500 mm/d), i.e., shock load cycles. Overall mean biodegradable organic compounds, nitrogen, phosphorus, and coliform removal percentage ranges of the four bioenergy-producing wetlands were 85 %–94 %, 47 %–84 %, 67 %–98 %, and 69 %–96 %, respectively, under such unstable loading conditions. Nitrogen and phosphorus accumulation percentages in plant tissues ranged between 0.02 % and 3 % with respect to total removal. Substantial phosphorus accumulation (1100–1900 mg phosphorus/kg) was observed with the used jhama brick media compared to the unused media concentration profiles (500 mg phosphorus/kg). The metallic steel electrode-based wetlands (with and without carbon-felt) achieved more stable pollutant removal than the carbon electrode (graphite and steel mesh-charcoal)-based wetlands. Pollutant removal performance improved with the electrode-based wetlands during shock load periods (compared to preceding constant load phases). The carbon electrode-based wetlands produced a mean maximum power density between 2055 and 3204 mW/m 3 . These ranges exceeded the mean maximum bioenergy production, i.e., 69–2297 mW/m 3 of the metallic electrode-based systems. This study demonstrated the synergetic impact of wetland components (electrodes, plants, and media) on pollutant removals and bioenergy production under rapidly variable loading conditions.

Abstract:In the field of sustainable wastewater management, electroactive wetlands (EW), or constructed wetland-microbial fuel cells (CW-MFC), are an emerging technology. With the growing problem of untreated wastewater, the emphasis must shift to decentralisation of wastewater treatment infrastructure, and CW-MFC can be an excellent choice. This review provides a chronologically organized account of the design and configuration of CW-MFCs developed between 2010 and 2023. The research on CW-MFC has mainly focused on material, positioning and number of electrodes; use of electroconductive media and filler materials; flow regime; algal-based CW-MFC and multistage setups. Compared to traditional constructed wetlands (CW) and microbial fuel cells (MFC), CW-MFCs have a number of advantages, including better treatment efficiency, faster organic matter utilisation, lower capital and land requirements and a smaller carbon footprint. However, there are some limitations as well, such as upscaling and viable electricity generation, which are covered in more detail in the article. Moreover, the economics of this technology is also evaluated. The microbiology of a CW-MFC and its influence on its performance are also elaborated. Recent advancements in this field in terms of design, configuration and performance are discussed. Finally, the knowledge gaps that must be addressed before this technique can be successfully implemented on a large scale are highlighted, along with specific recommendations. This article aims to advocate for EWs as an ideal decentralised wastewater treatment technique, while also shedding light on the areas that still need to be worked on.

Engineering Demonstration of the Remediation of Urban Water Using a Novel Mes Enhanced Ecological Floating Bed: From Construction to Long-Term Performance

Abstract:An innovative ecological floating bed coupled with sedimental microbial electrochemical system (ECOFB-MES) was designed for urban water remediation. A demonstration-scale ECOFB-MES of approximately 500 m2 was firstly constructed to perform the remediation of 8040 m2 urban water located in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China. During one-year operation, the COD, NH4+–N, NO3¯–N and TP concentrations stabilized around 10.3 ± 4.0 mg/L, 0.04 ± 0.02 mg/L, 0.61 ± 0.27 mg/L and 0.12 ± 0.05 mg/L from May 2021 to December 2021. The COD, TN and TP removal loads in April when MESs were connected were 69.69 g/d/m2, 4.10 g/d/m2 and 0.38 g/d/m2, which were 3.6, 15.3 and 1.8 times higher than those in January (open circuit). The average TC removal efficiency of sediment near anode was 36.7%, which was 2.4 times higher than that of sediment far from anode (15.5%). The average current of the MESs improved from 0.6 ± 0.1 mA to 32.0 ± 2.9 mA with reducing external resistance gradually, which was responsible for higher TC removal efficiency and lower dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration (7.78 ± 1.35 mg/L), which could enhance nitrogen removal. The MES notably enhanced the total number of species and the bacteria diversity of polyester fibers and roots in the same coupled system. The dominant functional bacteria such as Pseudomonas, Gemmobacter, Aeromonas and Arthrobacter beneficial for oxygen reduction and nitrogen removal were found on biocathode, and this indicated that biocathode of present system could reduce nitrate mainly through heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification. Results from the president research indicated that the ECOFB-MES provides a rewarding reference for practical application of polluted urban water remediation.

Abstract:This study co-treated landfill leachate and municipal wastewater employing unsaturated, partially saturated microbial fuel cell integrated tidal flow constructed wetlands. The wetland systems were packed with organic or waste materials and planted with Phragmites australis. Leachate and municipal wastewater were mixed in different volumetric proportions (40%: 60%; 20%: 80%; 10%: 90%) for co-treatment under variable wastewater retention periods (i.e., 6 and 24 h). Mean biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, ammonium nitrogen, total nitrogen, phosphorus removal percentage ranged between −35 and 76%, −22 and 76%, 10 and 90%, −0.2 and 71%, 38 and 92%, respectively. The combination of higher influent pollutants load (due to higher leachate volumetric proportion in the mixed wastewater) and longer retention time developed a predominant anoxic/anaerobic environment inside the media of the unsaturated, partially saturated microbial fuel cell integrated tidal flow wetlands. Such environmental conditions diminished organic and nutrient removal by hampering electrochemically active, other removal pathways, particularly in partially saturated wetlands. Leachate volumetric proportion reduction adjusted the influent's pollutant loads, carbon and other chemical composition, increased aerobic gradient inside the media bed, and improved pollutants removal of the unsaturated, partially saturated systems. A longer wastewater retention period supplemented operational performance. Mean voltage production across the microbial fuel cell integrated tidal flow constructed wetlands ranged between 4 and 152 mV; maximum power density production ranged between 50 and 527 mW/m3. Physicochemical properties (voids, roughness, carbon composition) of the media influenced power density production. Waste rubber tire material-based partially saturated wetland was the most efficient bioenergy producing system.
