Abstract:Sludge treatment wetland-microbial fuel cell (STW-MFC) is a unique sludge treatment process that produces bioelectricity, but its technology is still in its infancy. This study investigated the electrochemical properties, organic matter characteristics, leachate purification, and microbial community structure of STW-MFCs as affected by electrode location. When electrodes were placed in the filler layer, the STW-MFC system presented a higher power generation capacity (maximum output power density: 0.498 W/m3; peak cell voltage: 0.879 V) and organic matter degradation efficiency. The hydrophilic fraction was the main dissolved organic carbon fraction in sludge extracellular biological organic matter (EBOM) and leachate dissolved organic matter (DOM). Aromatics were mainly concentrated in the hydrophobic acid fraction. The UV-254 content of sludge EBOM decreased mainly in the hydrophilic and transphilic acid fractions. The excitation-emission matrix analysis showed that tryptophan-like protein was more easily eliminated than tyrosine-like protein. In addition, there was a strong correlation between voltage and NH4+ removal efficiency; a negative correlation between total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) removal efficiency, and a negative correlation between pH and TN, TP, and NH4+ removal efficiencies. High-throughput sequencing showed that the system was most abundant in Thermomonas, Geothrix and Geobacter when the electrodes were placed in the filled layer, while the levels of genes for membrane transport, carbohydrate metabolism and energy metabolism functions were higher than in other systems. This work will support STW- MFC widespread implementation by illuminating the underlying mechanics of different anode positions.
Potential of Novel Wastewater Treatment System Featuring Microbial Fuel Cell to Generate Electricity and Remove Pollutants

Abstract:A new design of a pilot-scale constructed wetland managed with a membraneless microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC) was tested here to assess its potential to generate electricity and remove pollutants under different operating conditions. In the CW-MFC, the cathode was half vertically inserted into the matrixes of constructed wetland (CW) and half exposed to the air to benefit from both surrounding wetland plant growth and the atmosphere thereby ensured its demand for oxygen as well. A series of periodic and regular voltages were obtained after four cycles of wastewater treatment in the batch flow experiment with influent chemical oxygen demand (COD) 228 mg/L. The maximum voltage output (0.588 +/- 0.01 V) for these four cycles lasted for 34, 35, 37 and 42 h, respectively. A steady set of maximum voltage (0.529 V) outputted over a wetland operation period of 15 days in the continuous flow experiment with the hydraulic retention time of 10 h. The maximum power density was 9.6 mW/m(2) and the maximum current density was 55 mA/m(2) according to the cathode area. Under batch flow mode, the COD removal rate was 91.2% and the outstanding removal rates of total nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen and total phosphorus appeared ranging between 95% and 99% while electricity generated from the CW-MFC. The influence of temperature on electricity generation was investigated and the result showed that the maximum voltage output values were inversely relative to the lasting duration of the voltage. Influent COD concentrations also affected the highest voltage output and continuous electricity generation of CW-MFC, and the higher initial COD concentration elevated the electricity generation. Thus, the new CW-MFC has high potentials not only of bioelectricity generation but also of the high pollutant removal rates. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Organics and coliform removal from low strength domestic wastewater using integrated constructed wetland – Microbial fuel cell reactor with bioelectricity generation

Abstract:Wastewater treatment with energy recovery is a major concern in environmental engineering research nowadays. The current study focuses on the removal of organics and fecal coliforms which are primary source of pollution in domestic wastewater using three identical reactors. One vertical planted constructed wetland (R1), one planted CW-MFC (R2), and one unplanted CW-MFC (R3). Bioenergy production in R2 and R3 was also monitored. In terms of COD removal, R2 reactor achieved 93.13 ± 4.83% efficiency, and R1 and R3 achieved 87.21 ± 4.56% and 86.31 ± 4.37% efficiencies, respectively. BOD removal efficiency in R1, R2, and R3 reactors were found to be similar around 91.79 ± 3.58% to 92.7 ± 3.3%. The total coliform removal was better in R1 (log 2.95) than in R2 (log 2.93). However, the fecal coliform removal in R2 was much higher (log 3.51) compared to R1 (log 2.94). Coliform and organic removal deteriorated during winter time, though electricity generation remained unaffected. The maximum open-circuit voltage in R2 was 886 mV and in the R3 was 487 mV during the complete study. Plants played a positive role in enhancing the electrical performance of R2 compared to unplanted R3 by increasing the redox potential. Presence of dissolved oxygen in the range of 1.97–2.1 mg/L was also detected near the rhizosphere of the planted reactors. Combined role of plants and electrodes was crucial for COD removal and anaerobic condition near anode with low ORP governed the pathogen removal from domestic wastewater.

Abstract:The management of drainage water (DW), which is produced during the soilless cultivation of plants, requires a high energy input. At the same time, DW is characterized by a high electrolytic conductivity, a high redox potential, and is also stable and putrefaction-free. In the present study, the natural properties of drainage water and a biotreatment method employing an external organic substrate in the form of citric acid (C/N 1.0, 1.5, 2.0) were utilized for energy recovery by a microbial fuel cell (MFC). The cathode chamber served as a retention tank for DW with a carbon felt electrode fixed inside. In turn, a biological reactor with biomass attached to the filling in the form of carbon felt served as the anode chamber. The filling also played the role of an electrode. The chambers were combined by an ion exchange membrane, forming an H letter-shaped system. They were then connected in an external electrical circuit with a resistance of 1k Ω. The use of a flow-through system eliminated steps involving aeration and mixing of the chambers' contents. Citric acid was found to be an efficient organic substrate. The voltage of the electric current increased from 44.34 ± 60.92 mV to 566.06 ± 2.47 mV for the organic substrate dose expressed by the C/N ratio ranging from 1.0 to 2.0. At the same time, the denitrification efficiency ranged from 51.47 ± 9.84 to 95.60 ± 1.99% and that of dephosphatation from 88.97 ± 2.41 to 90.48 ± 1.99% at C/N from 1.0 to 2.0. The conducted studies confirmed the possibility of recovering energy during the biological purification of drainage water in a biofilm reactor. The adopted solution only required the connection of electrodes and tanks with an ion-selective membrane. Further research should aim to biologically treat DW followed by identification of the feasibility of energy recovery by means of MFC.

Abstract:Increasing industrialization and urbanization have contributed to a significant rise in wastewater discharge and exerted extensive pressure on the existing natural energy resources. Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a sustainable technology that utilizes wastewater for electricity generation. MFC comprises a bioelectrochemical system employing electroactive biofilms of several aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, such as Geobacter sulfurreducens, Shewanella oneidensis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Ochrobacterum pseudiintermedium. Since the electroactive biofilms constitute a vital part of the MFC, it is crucial to understand the biofilm-mediated pollutant metabolism and electron transfer mechanisms. Engineering electroactive biofilm communities for improved biofilm formation and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secretion can positively impact the bioelectrochemical system and improve fuel cell performance. This review article summarizes the role of electroactive bacterial communities in MFC for wastewater treatment and bioelectricity generation. A significant focus has been laid on understanding the composition, structure, and function of electroactive biofilms in MFC. Various electron transport mechanisms, including direct electron transfer (DET), indirect electron transfer (IET), and long-distance electron transfer (LDET), have been discussed. A detailed summary of the optimization of process parameters and genetic engineering strategies for improving the performance of MFC has been provided. Lastly, the applications of MFC for wastewater treatment, bioelectricity generation, and biosensor development have been reviewed.
Enhancement of Pollutants Removal from Real Sewage by Embedding Microbial Fuel Cell in Anaerobic–anoxic–oxic Wastewater Treatment Process

Abstract:BACKGROUNDDeveloping an economical biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal technology with high efficiency has become a research priority in current sewage treatment procedures. In order to solve the problems within the anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A(2)/O) process, including substrates competition and high energy consumption, a microbial fuel cell (MFC) was embedded in the A(2)/O process to enhance the efficiencies of removal of nitrogen and phosphorus, along with electricity production.RESULTSThree A(2)/O reactors, one with an embedded MFC, were set up, and nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies and electricity generation were investigated. At the stage of stable operation, the chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen and total phosphorus removal efficiencies of the MFC-A(2)/O reactor, compared with the control, were increased by 15.9%, 9.3% and 1.4% on average, respectively. The average output power density of the MFC was 14.31.4 mW m(-3) and the internal resistance was 6000 . Grey relational analysis was applied to study the most significant operational parameter of the A(2)/O process affecting electricity production of the MFC.CONCLUSIONS This research proved that nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency could be improved by embedding an MFC in the A(2)/O process. Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are new and growing renewable energy devices. They transform chemical products into electricity with the help of microorganisms (enzymes, bacteria, microbes, etc.) acting as biocatalysts. They are nowadays displaying technological development since they concomitant simultaneously the wastewater treatment and the electric power generation. These two novelties incite researchers in the field, the utilization of this promising technology. As a matter of fact, a bioelectrochemical fuel cell has been elaborated and set up for garden compost leachate treatment. Following a previous study on the microbial anode formed from wastewater under the application of an electric potential either positive or negative by using chronoamperometry. In this work, we propose the simple method of connecting the two electrodes (anode and cathode) by electrical resistance, to flow a current. The impact of the polarizing electric load on the achievement of the MFC has therefore been studied. Moreover, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal for the MFC running for 7 days has been also investigated. It decreased and showed simultaneously an increase in the cell voltage. Thus, the effects of the external load on the current and power generation, as well as on pollutant removal, have been studied by modifying each time the external load. The external polarizing resistance (EPR) was increased from 1 to 10 kΩ, to assess the pollutant decay of the organic matter contained in the wastes. As a result of this, the voltage was increased, whilst the current was decreased, with increasing values of the EPR. The results have been discussed with respect to the type and the predominant microorganisms (electrogenic/fermentative) being involved during the generation of the electric current. This new technology is very promising for converting waste into electricity by offering a way to clean up the polluted environment.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cell (MFC) embedded in anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A2/O) process has positive effects on wastewater treatment, which can enhance the efficiencies of pollutants’ removal, along with electricity production. But the electricity generation performance and its optimization of MFC embedded in A2O process still needs to be further investigated. In this study, in order to optimize the contaminants removal and electricity production of the MFC-A2/O reactor, a lab-scale corridor-style MFC-A2/O reactor, which could simulate the practical A2/O biological reactor better, was designed and operated. The removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen and total phosphorus were continuously monitored so as the electricity generation. In addition, the influences of the structural parameters’ changes of MFC on the output voltage, including electrode material, the directly connected area and the distance between electrodes, were also studied. The results elucidated that the effluent quality of A2/O reactor could be improved when MFC was embedded, and all the investigated structural factors were closely related to the electricity generation performance of MFC to some extent.
Microbial fuel cell: Interplay of energy production, wastewater treatment, toxicity assessment with hydraulic retention time

Abstract:Microbial fuel cell (MFC) operation under similar conditions to conventional methods will support the use of this technology in large-scale wastewater treatment. The operation of scaled-up air-cathode MFC (2 L) fed with synthetic wastewater (similar to domestic) in a continuous flow was evaluated using three different hydraulic retention times (HRT), 12, 8, and 4 h. We found that electricity generation and wastewater treatment could be enhanced under an HRT of 12 h. Additionally, the longer HRT led to greater coulombic efficiency (5.44%) than MFC operating under 8 h and 4 h, 2.23 and 1.12%, respectively. However, due to the anaerobic condition, the MFC was unable to remove nutrients. Furthermore, an acute toxicity test with Lactuca sativa revealed that MFC could reduce wastewater toxicity. These outcomes demonstrated that scaled-up MFC could be operated as a primary effluent treatment and transform a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) into a renewable energy producer.
Multi-anode enhanced the bioelectricity generation in air-cathode microbial fuel cells towards energy self-sustaining wastewater treatment

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) hold considerable promise for harnessing the substantial energy resources present in wastewater. However, their practical application in wastewater treatment is limited by inadequate removal of organic matter and inefficient power recovery. Previous studies have investigated aeration as a method to enhance the removal of organic matter, but this method is energy-intensive. To address this issue, this study proposed using MFC-recovered bioelectricity for aeration, thereby mitigating the associated expenses. An air-cathode MFC with multi-anode was constructed and optimized to maximize electricity supply for aeration. Carbon-felt anodes were chosen as the most effective anode configuration, due to the high abundance of electroactive bacteria and genes observed in the biofilm generated on their surface. By incorporating six carbon felt anodes, the MFC achieved a 1.7 and 1.1 fold enhancement in the maximum power and current density, respectively. The optimized MFC unit achieved a stable current density of 0.32 A/m2 and achieved COD removal of 60% in the long-term operation of 140 days in a 50 L reactor. In a reactor scaled up to 1600 L, 72 MFCs successfully powered a mini air pump work for 10 s after an 81-s charging period. The intermittent aeration resulted in partial increases in DO concentrations to 0.03-3.5 mg/L, which is expected to promote the removal of nitrogen compounds by the nitrification-anammox process. These groundbreaking results lay the foundation for self-sustaining wastewater treatment technologies.
Constructed wetland microbial fuel cell as enhancing pollutants treatment technology to produce green energy

Abstract:The persistent challenge of water pollution, exacerbated by slow progress in ecofriendly technologies and accumulating pollutants, underscores the need for innovative solutions. Constructed Wetland Microbial Fuel Cell (CW-MFC) emerges as an intriguing environmental technology capable of adressing this issue by eliminating contaminants from wastewater while simultaneously producing green energy as an additional bonus. In recent years, CW-MFC technology has gained attention due to its sustainability and promising prospects for a circular waste-free industry. However, due to various technological and biological challenges, it has not yet achieved wide-scale application. This review examines the current state of CW-MFC technology and identifies both biotic and abiotic strategies for optimization through operational and structural improvements affecting biocomponents. Our review highlights several key findings: (1) Plants play an important role in reducing the system's inner resistance through mechanisms such as radial oxygen loss, evapotranspiration, and high photosynthetic flow, which facilitate electroactive bacteria and affect redox potential. (2) Plant characteristics such as root porosity, phloem and aerenchyma development, chlorophyll content, and plant biomass are key indicators of CW-MFC performance and significantly impact both pollutant removal and energy harvesting. (3) We expand the criteria for selecting suitable plants to include mesophytes and C3 pollutant-tolerant species, in addition to traditional aquatic and C4 plants. Additionally, the review presents several technical approaches that enhance CW-MFC efficiency: (1) design optimization, (2) use of novel materials, and (3) application of external electrical fields, aeration, light, and temperature adjustments. CW-MFCs are capable of nearly complete elimination of a wide range of contaminants, including organic matter (84 % ± 10), total nitrogen (80 % ± 7) and phosphorus (79 % ± 18) compounds, metals (86 % ± 10), pharmaceuticals (87 % ± 7), dyes (90 % ± 8), and other complex pollutants, while generating green energy. We hope our findings will be useful in optimizing CW-MFC design and providing insights for researchers aiming to advance the technology and facilitate its future scaling.
Electricity Generation from Organic Wastewater Using a Continuous-Flow Single Chamber Microbial Fuel Cell

Abstract:A continuous Single Chamber Microbial Fuel Cell (SC-MFC) was investigated systemically in this study. When fed by synthetic wastewater, with a 400mg/l COD concentration the maximum power density of the MFC was 71.5mW/m2 (at 0.8 A/m2). With a NaCl concentration of 0.1M put into the influent, it increased from 42.0 mW/m2 (at 0.25 A/m2) to 141.7mW/m2 (at 1.1A/m2), and the internal resistance also decreased significantly from 300Ω to 77Ω. The optimal operation temperature was 30oC, with a power density of 140.7mW/m2 (at 1.0 A/m2). When fed by starch processing wastewater, the average power density of the MFC was 100mW/m2, while fed by the effluent from an anaerobic reactor treating the starch wastewater; it was 90mW/m2. Different substrates resulted in significant influence on microbial community on the anode of the MFC, while the anode connected into the circuit or not did not cause obvious difference in the microbial community structure.
High-loaded tidal flow constructed wetlands coupled with microbial fuel cells: effects of the vegetation and filling material size

Abstract:The sanitation resource recovery is a contemporary strategy fully in line with the concept of the circular economy. The by-products from constructed wetlands technology include treated water, nutrients, biomass and energy. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the sewage treatment and resources recovery in constructed wetlands operating in a tidal flow configuration, coupled with microbial fuel cells (MFC). The following factors were evaluated: two types of filling material (gravel #0 and #1) and two cultivated species, Pennisetum purpureum sp. (BRS capiaçu elephant grass) and Musa spp. (dwarf cavendish banana). The treatment cycle in each CW lasted a total of 8 h. An increase in the levels of dissolved oxygen was seen due to the tidal flow configuration, enabling the biochemical processes to remove contaminants and produce an electric current. Acceptable removal efficiency was seen for most monitored parameters. The mean values for the COD output concentration were 119, 109, 117 and 98 mg L −1 ; removal efficiency 80%, 83%, 80% and 82%; and for wetlands with banana in gravel #1 (BG1), banana in gravel #0 (BG0), capiaçu in gravel #1 (CG1) and capiaçu in gravel #0 (CG0), respectively. The plant and type of filling material affected the performance of the CW, with the CG0 system being the most efficient in COD removal, and standing out for productivity. The plant and filling material affected energy production in the MFC, where the CG0 CW was again the most efficient, with maximum values of up to 970 mV. The results show that tidal flow CW can function with reduced cycle times and, if coupled with MFC, are able to produce energy. This study integrates high-load tidal flow CW with MFC at a pilot scale, offering combined benefits of wastewater treatment and energy generation. By using locally adapted species, the research provides valuable insights into optimising system performance and understanding the impact of tidal flow cycles, enhancing the practical application of CW with MFC in tropical regions.

Abstract:A constructed wetland (CW)-coupled microbial fuel cell (MFC) system was constructed to treat wastewater and generate electricity. The total phosphorus in the simulated domestic sewage was used as the treatment target, and the optimal phosphorus removal effect and electricity generation were determined by comparing the changes in substrates, hydraulic retention times, and microorganisms. The mechanism underlying phosphorus removal was also analyzed. By using magnesia and garnet as substrates, the best removal efficiencies of two CW-MFC systems reached 80.3% and 92.4%. Phosphorus removal by the garnet matrix mainly depends on a complex adsorption process, whereas the magnesia system relies on ion exchange reactions. The maximum output voltage and stabilization voltage of the garnet system were higher than those of the magnesia system. Microorganisms in the wetland sediments and electrode also changed considerably. It indicates that the mechanism of phosphorus removal by the substrate in the CW-MFC system is adsorption and chemical reaction between ions to generate precipitation. The population structure of proteobacteria and other microorganisms has an impact on both power generation and phosphorus removal. Combining the advantages of constructed wetlands and microbial fuel cells also improved phosphorus removal in coupled system. Therefore, when studying a CW-MFC system, the selection of electrode materials, matrix, and system structure should be taken into account to find a method that will improve the power generation capacity of the system and remove phosphorus.

Abstract:A new design of floating flexible microbial fuel cell (FMFC) was constructed by combining the carbon nanoparticles modified titanium foil anode (CNPs/ TF), insulating cloth, and air–cathode loaded with Pt/ C catalyst. This FMFC can float on wastewater and generate a maximum power density of over 250 mW m−2 whose power performance is higher than other reported floating MFCs. After 21 days of operating on municipal wastewater, the results showed that the chemical oxygen demand (COD) undertaken by this FMFC would decrease from 3845 mg L−1 to 308 mg L−1. It showed that the COD removal efficiency was 92.1% and it was better than a control without FMFC and whose COD removal efficiency was 61.5%. In addition, the cost of the FMFC is much lower than those traditional and common MFCs due to their membrane-free structure. Finally, it was also found that Geoalkalibacter was dominant exoelectrogens in anodic biofilm and benefited the power generation performance of FMFC. This study showed that this novel FMFC could polish the performance of municipal wastewater treatment and also produce electric power in future.

Abstract:Constructed wetland-coupled microbial fuel cell systems (CW-MFCs) incorporate an aerobic zone and an anaerobic zone to generate electricity that achieves the oxidative degradation of contaminants. However, there are few reports on the performance of such coupled systems. In this study, we determined the optimal configuration of CW-MFCs to characterize their electricity generation performance. Based on the results using different levels of dissolved oxygen among the CW-MFCs, we concluded that a 20-cm distance between the anode and cathode produced an optimal removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 94.90% with a 0.15 W/m3 power density, 339.80 Ω internal resistance, and 0.31% coulombic efficiency. In addition, a COD of 200 mg/L provided greater electricity generation (741 mV open circuit voltage, 0.20 W/m3 power density, 339.80 Ω internal resistance, and 0.49 mA current) and purification ability (90.45% COD removal) to meet system COD loading limitations than did higher COD values. By adding 50 mM phosphate buffer solution to synthetic wastewater, relatively high conductivity and buffer capacity were achieved, resulting in improvement in electricity generation. These findings highlight important aspects of bioelectricity generation in CW-MFCs.

Abstract:Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) is an innovative bio-electrochemical approach which converts biochemical energy inherent in wastewater into electrical energy, thus contributing to circular economy. Five electrogenic bacteria, Kocuria rosea (GTPAS76), two strains of Bacillus circulans (GTPO28 and GTPAS54), and two strains of Corynebacterium vitaeruminis (GTPO38 and GTPO42) were isolated from a common effluent treatment plant (CETP) and were used individually as well as in consortium form to run double chambered "H" type microbial fuel cell. Individually they could produce voltage in the range of 0.4-0.7 V in the MFC systems. Consortium developed using GTPO28, GTPO38, GTPAS54 and GTPAS76 were capable of producing voltage output of 0.8 V with 81.81 % and 64 % COD and BOD reduction, respectively. The EPS production capacity and electricity generation by the isolated bacteria correlated significantly (r = 0.72). Various parameters like, effect of preformed biofilm, length of salt bridge and its reuse, aeration, substrate concentration and external resistance were studied in detail. The study emphasizes on improving the commercialization aspect of MFC with repeated use of salt bridge and improving wastewater treatment potential after optimization of MFC system. Polarization curve and power density trends were studied in optimized MFC. A maximum power density and current density achieved were 18.15 mW/m2 and 370.37 mA/m2, respectively using 5 mM sodium benzoate. This study reports the use of sodium benzoate as a substrate along with reusing of the salt bridge in MFC study with promising results for BOD and COD reduction, proving it to be futuristic technology for bio-based circular ecosystem development.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are a new system that generates electricity and treats wastewater. The scientific community is interested in its applications; however, electron generation and transportation are key concerns. Thus, this research compares and studies common materials, which have never been widely investigated. The anode electrode is simple graphite (GE), mild steel (ME), and stainless steel (SE) to increase the transportation of electrons. Nypa fruticans Wurmb (Nira sap) is used as an easily available and highly beneficial organic substrate for bacterial populations. According to electrochemical tests, the GE offered 1.07 mW/m 2 power density (PD), while the ME and SE delivered 2.75 mW/m 2 and 5.85 mW/m 2 within the first 35 days, respectively. The findings demonstrated that the SE anode had the highest specific capacitance values of 5.25 × 10 −2 F/g, while the GE anode and ME anode had Cp values of 4.41 × 10 −2 F/g, and 3.36 × 10 −2 F/g, respectively. Bisphenol A (BPA) removal efficiency was maximum on the 65th day, with 96.25% for the SE anode, 94.55% for the ME, and 81.08% for the GE, while Pb 2+ removal efficiency was 97.35% in the SE, 96.65% in the ME, and 96.60% in the GE. Bacillus sp. dominated all anodes during bacterial identification due to the same inoculation source. A comprehensive discussion of mechanisms is enclosed with future research directions.

Abstract:Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) offers a promising solution for addressing both waste water treatment and challenges in renewable energy production. This study aims to explore the integration of MFCs with adsorption/bio-oxidation (AB) process to tackle wastewater management difficulties while generating renewable energy. By investigating microbial mechanisms within MFCs, enhancing pollutant removal efficacy, and assessing MFC application feasibility, we seek to advance eco-friendly wastewater treatment and renewable energy harvesting. Lab-scale experiments will identify microbial communities, characterize electron transfer processes, and evaluate MFC performance in pollutant removal. Through systematic experimentation with varied operational parameters and substrate concentrations, we aim to optimize MFC efficiency. Electrochemical assessments, including power output tests and electron flow rates, quantify MFC energy generation capabilities. Environmental and financial sustainability aspects, such as cost-benefit analysis and life cycle assessment, will be integrated to assess MFC viability compared to traditional wastewater treatment systems. The outcomes of this research will contribute to scientific knowledge expansion, providing insights for policymakers, water utilities, and environmentalists to embrace green technologies for water contamination mitigation, energy efficiency enhancement, and sustainable development.

Abstract:Water, energy, and food are indispensable for sustainable economic development. Despite nutrients, especially phosphorus and nitrogen, being essential for plant growth and thus food supplies, those present in wastewater are considered an environmental burden. While microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are receiving much interest, combining wastewater treatment with an MFC has emerged as an option for low-cost wastewater treatment. Among others, a constructed wetland (CW) coupled with an MFC (CW-MFC) has the potential to provide a low carbon footprint and low-energy wastewater treatment, as well as nutrient and energy recovery from wastewater. Findings from this review show that the organic and nutrient removal and power generation by the integrated CW-MFC systems are affected by a number of factors including the organic loading rate, hydraulic retention time, system design, plant species, dissolved oxygen, substrate/media type, influent feeding mode, electrode materials and spacing, and external resistance. This review aims to summarize the current state of the CW-MFC and related technologies with particular emphasis on organic and nutrient removal, as well as on the bioenergy recovery from different wastewaters. Despite the benefits that these technologies can offer, the interactive mechanisms between the CW and MFC in the integrated system are still unclear. Further research is needed to fully understand the CW-MFC and related systems. The results of this work provide not only an overview and insight into existing knowledge but also the future direction of the CW-MFC technologies.
