Abstract:This paper presents studies on the processing of enrichment tailings as a component of a raw mixture in order to obtain cement clinker, with simultaneous distillation of zinc. Thermodynamic studies were carried out in the temperature range of 600–1600 °C using the software application “HSC Chemistry 6” developed by the metallurgical company Outokumpu (Finland). As a result of the conducted studies, we found that zinc contributes to the intensification of mineral formation of cement clinker. In particular, it was found that the formation of belite is possible in the temperature range from 990.7 to 1500 °C with Gibbs energy values of −0.01 and −323.8 kJ (which is better than the standard process by −11.4 kJ), respectively; the formation of alite is possible in the temperature range from 982.9 to 1500 °C with Gibbs energy values of −0.05 and −402.1 kJ (better than the standard process by −11.4 kJ), respectively; the formation of tricalcium aluminate is thermodynamically possible in the temperature range from 600 °C at ΔGTo = −893.8 kJ to 1500 °C at ΔGTo = −1899.3 kJ (better than the standard process by −1570.1 kJ), respectively; and the formation of four calcium aluminoferrite is possible in the temperature range from 600 °C at ΔGTo = −898.9 kJ to 1500 °C at ΔGTo = −1959.3 kJ (better than the standard process by −1570.2 kJ), respectively, with simultaneous distillation of zinc into a gaseous state for its further capture.

Abstract:In this work, a technological scheme for the coprocessing of dissimilar zinc-containing wastes, namely, slags obtained from the autogenous smelting of copper-zinc concentrates and dusts (sludges) from gas purification during blast furnace and steelmaking production, was developed. The proposed technology was confirmed to achieve the efficient utilization of metallurgical wastes and produce the desired products (e.g., zinc sublimates, copper cast iron, and impoverished slag) for use as building materials through thermodynamic modeling, microstructural studies, and recovery process modeling. The extraction rates of copper into the alloy and zinc into sublimates by the proposed technology reached 90% and 95%, respectively. The significance of the oxide–sulfide melt as an ion-exchange medium providing high mass transfer rates and the necessary indicators for metal extraction was revealed in this study.

Abstract:Waelz slag is an iron-containing waste generated during electric arc furnace (EAF) dust processing in a rotary kiln named the Waelz process. This study focuses on the reduction smelting of the Waelz slag to produce iron-based alloy. The thermodynamic simulation using FactSage 8.0 software was carried out to predict temperatures of the metal and slag obtained as well as their compositions. Based on the simulation results, reduction smelting experiments were performed on a laboratory scale using two approaches, with and without preliminary froth flotation of carbon, respectively. The experiments have confirmed the technological possibility of reduction smelting of the Waelz slag from EAF dust processing. The approach using preliminary flotation of carbon and reduction smelting at 1500 °C resulted in high-copper cast iron production, while the approach without flotation, where the Waelz slag was smelted at 1650 °C with the addition of SiO2 flux, led to obtaining low-silicon ferrosilicon with high Cu content, as well as slag attractive for construction industry.

Abstract:The article presents the results of thermodynamic analysis and experiments on the electric smelting of Shalkiya ore (5.2% of ZnS, 1.0% of PbS, 50% of SiO2) with the joint producing a silicon-containing ferroalloy and extracting zinc and lead into sublimates. The studies included the thermodynamic modeling using the HSC-6.0 software package and electric smelting in an arc furnace. It was established that the interaction in a ZnS-Fe3O4-2C system under equilibrium conditions is of a stepwise nature with the initial reduction of Fe3O4 to Fe and FeO at 600-1000 °C, then the interaction of ZnS with Fe at 1100-1800 °C with the formation of gaseous zinc, and the interaction of ZnS with FeO with the predominant formation of zinc at temperatures above 1600 °C. The electric smelting a charge containing the Shalkiya ore, coke, magnetite concentrate (85.9% of Fe3O4) and steel shavings allowed us to establish that FeSi45 grade ferrosilicon (41.8-44.6% of Si), with the extraction of 80-85.4% of Si, can be produced in the presence of 24.9-30% of coke with the replacement of magnetite's iron by steel shavings' iron from 20.9 to 91.8%. A lower degree of this replacement is associated with intensive development of foaming and a decrease in the extraction of silicon into the alloy. At least 98% of zinc and 96% of lead are extracted into the resulting sublimates containing 29.4% of zinc and 15.1% of lead.

Abstract:The article presents the results of thermodynamic prediction and electric smelting of Shalkiya sulfide zinc-lead-bearing ore in the presence of magnetite and coke. Using the HSC-6.0 software package, it was found that under equilibrium conditions in the presence of Fe 3 O 4 and carbon, the reduction and formation of gaseous zinc from ZnS (according to ∆ G ° = 0) occurs at a temperature of 1205.7 °C, and the formation of ferroalloy at the interaction of the sulfide ore with magnetite and carbon begins at 1200 °C. About 58% of silicon is extracted into the ferroalloy at 1800–1900 °C; almost all zinc and 83–88% of lead turns into a gaseous state. Electric smelting of the sulfide ore in the presence of magnetite concentrate and coke makes it possible to obtain the FS45 grade ferrosilicon (42–43% of Si); the silicon extraction degree was 84–88%. At the same time, 97.3% of lead and 99.2% of zinc are extracted into the sublimates. The developed method for processing zinc sulfide ores allows us to increase the degree of raw materials' comprehensive use due to the extraction of not only zinc and lead, but also silicon. The technology can be used to process raw materials containing zinc, lead and silica, such as zinc ore concentration tailings.

Abstract:"This article presents the results of a complete thermodynamic modeling of the smelting process of chromium-manganese-silicon-containing ferroalloy from chromium and manganese ores of Kazakhstan. A complete thermodynamic simulation of the smelting process of chromium-manganese silicon-containing ferroalloy was performed in the software package «HSC Chemistry 6». The principle of operation of this software package is based on the principle of maximum entropy and takes into account all known properties of the reacting components that make up the thermodynamic system. Thermodynamic analysis for modeling the smelting process of a complex alloy was carried out in the temperature range from 900 to 1800 °C for three real charge compositions (with a lack of 10 % solid reducing agent, with a normal course of the regime and with an excess of 10 % solid reducing agent). The mechanism of joint carbothermic reduction of silicon, aluminum, calcium, manganese, chromium and iron was studied using the Cr-Si-Al-Ca-Mn-Mg-O-C system. The calculations carried out make it possible to fully consider all the physicochemical processes occurring during the smelting of chromium-manganese silicon containing ferroalloy by the carbothermic method. According to thermodynamic data, the optimal consumption of solid carbon per 100 kg of ore mixture (chromium and manganese ore), in the amount of 17 kg, has been established. The chemical composition at a temperature of 1800 °C is, %: Cr - 43.43; Mn - 21.28; Si - 10.25 and Fe - 24.55. Abstract:Converter slurries at modern metallurgical plants represent a significant part of metal-containing industrial waste with a high concentration of iron. Currently, there is a problem of their utilization and use as raw materials for metallurgy. The purpose of this work is to study the processes of briquetting and recovery of briquetted products, based on a mixture of converter slurries of gas purification and converter slags. When performing experimental studies on the preparation of sludge briquettes from a mixture of converter sludge of gas purification and converter slag, their metallization and reduction melting in laboratory conditions, the optimal composition of the components of the mixture of converter slag and gas purification sludge was determined by the percentage of iron, which is appropriate for use as a raw material for steel smelting. Experimental studies on the preparation of sludge-coal mixtures from dispersed metal-containing and carbon-containing industrial waste with stoichiometric coal consumption for the recovery of extracted metals have proved the possibility of obtaining sludge-coal briquettes, which are further subjected to metallization and reduction melting. Sequential processing of dispersed production waste, namely drying, metallization and reduction melting, allowed us to obtain at the final stage a metal sample that corresponds to high-quality steel in its composition. Based on the analysis of the results of experimental studies, the technology of reducing melting of metal-containing waste has been developed. As a result of the implementation of the technology, high-quality steels and alloys can be obtained without carburizing the metal, bypassing the production stages of cast iron and high-carbon alloys. The content of harmful impurities of sulfur and phosphorus meets the technical requirements of high-quality steel. The proposed technology for processing slag and sludge from oxygen-converter production will reduce the volume of accumulated production waste.

Abstract:Investigation of the possibility of obtaining a complex master alloy used in the deoxidation of steel, smelted from substandard manganese-containing materials, briquettes, and high-ash coals in ore-thermal electric furnaces. Thermodynamic modeling was carried out using the HSC Chemistry software package to determine the optimal process parameters using a second-order rotatable plan (Box-Hunter plan). Thermodynamic modeling improves the understanding of physical and chemical processes, allows making predictions about the behavior of the system under various conditions, optimizing processes and saving time and resources necessary for experiments. Electric smelting of the briquette was carried out with coal and quartzite (to adjust the chemical composition and neutralize residual carbon) in an ore-thermal electric furnace with a power of up to 150 kV*A. The influence of temperature on the equilibrium distribution of silicon, manganese, and aluminum in the «briquette-coal-quartzite» system, the degree of transition of silicon and manganese into a complex ligature and the content of these metals in the alloy are determined by the method of thermodynamic modeling. As a result of experiments on ore-thermal electric smelting of a briquette with high-ash coal, a complex ligature was obtained with an average content of 45.92–53.11% silicon, 27.72–34.81% manganese and 5.60–6.91% aluminum.

Abstract:The presence of zinc in byproduct dust produced during steel production poses a challenge to resource management and can have adverse environmental effects. This study investigates the dezincification behavior of a commercial-scale rotary hearth furnace used to recycle the byproduct dust. A mathematical model of iron-ore/carbon-composite pellets was developed, incorporating a one-dimensional dynamic model to examine the non-uniform distribution of temperature and solid weight fraction. The Arrhenius kinetics of the ZnO reduction reaction (ZnO + CO → Zn + CO 2 ) was fitted using operational data yielding estimated parameters of 163.6 kJ mol −1 and 868.6 m s −1 . The simulation results of our study showed good agreement with the operational data from the furnace, with a relative error of 10%. Six factors were identified as having an impact on the dezincification ratio, with the most significant being operational time, particle size, temperature, C/O ratio, porosity, and emissivity in descending order. The mathematical model was used to examine two scenarios of environmental problems and derive optimal solutions for each. Our results show that extreme gradient boosting using operating temperature, operating duration, and C/O ratio as trained variables was the most accurate in predicting dezincification and metallization, resulting in a 33% increase in waste recycling through surrogate-based optimization. The Pareto front analysis highlights the importance of considering the net impact of carbon emissions, total production cost, and solid waste penalties together.

Abstract:Abstract The recycling of waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) and other secondary copper-containing materials through the "black copper" process relies on the selective distribution of metals among the gas, slag, and copper-rich liquid phase. This distribution is controlled by the effective oxidation/reduction potential, often expressed in terms of oxygen partial pressure. Separation of Ni and Sn presents a certain challenge in recycling though black copper route due to similar distribution coefficients over a wide range of oxygen partial pressures and possibly can be improved by optimizing the slag chemistry. This study provides experimental information on the distribution of Ni, Sn, and Zn between fayalite slags or calcium ferrite slags and copper-rich metal at 1250°C. The study uses high-temperature equilibration, quenching, and electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA) techniques along with laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) for selected measurements of low concentrations. The oxygen partial pressure is controlled by the CO/CO 2 /Ar gas flow or by measuring the concentration of copper oxide in the slag. The effect of slag composition in terms of Fe/SiO 2 or Fe/CaO ratio is studied by using different holding materials, such as silica (SiO 2 ) ampoule, solid spinel (Fe 3 O 4 ), wüstite (FeO), or dicalcium ferrite (Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 ). The experimental results are compared with literature data and used to optimize thermodynamic models for FactSage® software. The results demonstrate an opportunity for more effective separation of Ni and Sn using at oxidizing stage by using calcium ferrite slag promoting the formation of Sn 4+ .

Abstract:Detrimental elements such as arsenic and antimony tend to accumulate in dusts and drosses of lead-zinc as well as copper smelters. These by-products are commonly treated in dedicated reductive smelting units producing Cu-rich matte, As-Sb-collecting speiss and Pb-rich metal, as well as liquid slag. Such process would have a complex distribution of elements (Cu, Fe, Pb, Zn, Ni, Sn, Sb, As, Ag, Au, S, etc.) among four liquid phases. Thermodynamic calculations can be used for predictions and optimization of such processes. They must rely on accurate models developed in integration with experimental program. Present study reports results of recent progress in experimental and modelling studies of As, Sb-containing speiss systems and demonstration of calculations relevant for industrial conditions. Experimental methodology consisted of equilibration, quenching and electron probe X-ray microanalysis. Calculations were performed using FactSage software and thermodynamic database developed based on the dedicated recent experiments. The main findings of the paper are: a set of binary and ternary diagrams relevant to matte and speiss formation conditions; distribution of Ag and Au among liquid Pb and speiss in key quaternary systems; and distributions of 10 main elements for industrially relevant matte/speiss/metal multicomponent equilibria.

This is necessary to determine the technological aspects that reduce the loss of alloying components during the production and use of the alloying alloy. The research results indicate that the alloy treasure is represented by iron phases with the content of alloying elements as substitution atoms. The proportion of residual carbon, which was part of the carbide component and the residual unproduced reducing agent, provided the necessary reducibility during the use of the alloy. The microstructure of the alloying alloy was characterized by the presence of phase formations that differed in shape, size and chemical composition. The content of Ni in the studied areas of different phases varied in the range of 1.28–32.62 % wt., Cr-0.33–46.22 % wt., W-0.00–20.43 % wt., Mo – 0 .00–10.78 % wt. Mo, W, Nb were more concentrated in individual particles, which probably had a carbide nature. The research identified new technological aspects of processing high-alloy man-made waste to obtain the resource-saving alloying alloy with the possibility of replacing part of the standard ferroalloys in steelmaking. Indicators of the obtained alloy allow to smelt grades of alloy steels when replacing part of standard ferroalloys. Production and use of alloying alloy eliminates the need for storage of fine oxide metallurgical waste on the territory of enterprises. This allows to improve the sanitary conditions of workers to increase the level of safety of residents of the surrounding areas without additional costs for the maintenance of waste storage sites.
COMPREHENSIVE WASTE-FREE PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY OF COPPER SMELTING SLAGS

Abstract:More than 140 million tons of slag have been accumulated in the dumps of copper smelting enterprises of the Russian Federation. Maintaining dumps require significant expenses, which makes it necessary to dispose these production wastes as completely as possible. At the same time, these slags contain valuable elements, in particular, iron, copper, zinc, selenium, arsenic and some others; their extraction can make disposal cost-effective. Among these elements iron has the highest cost, which content is at the level of more than 40%; it is almost at the level of some iron ores used in ferrous metallurgy. However, the use of this iron-containing material in conventional ferrous metallurgy processes is complicated by the high (up to 0.6%) copper content. In addition, the extraction of iron by conventional methods does not solve the problems of disposal of newly formed slag. In this work, the technological methods of processing copper-smelting slags by solid-phase reduction of iron in the Tamman reduction furnace, smelting of reduction products in induction furnaces with the production of metallic iron and propants from the slag residue are proposed and worked out in laboratory conditions. The slags and slurries of the Karabash Copper Smelting Plant, where the main component of is iron, were used as the research material. The properties of cast iron grinding media, as well as ceramic proppants for the use in the oil industry, were investigated. As a result, the influence of elements passing into metal (silicon, carbon, copper and sulfur) on the hardness of grinding balls and the influence of the chemical composition of the slag on the strength of the obtained propants was clarified. A technological scheme of complex slag processing has been developed and a set of serially manufactured equipment has been selected. The economic efficiency of the organization of production is estimated.
Pyrometallurgical Technology for Extracting Iron and Zinc from Electric Arc Furnace Dust

Abstract:This study is aimed at developing a technology for processing electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) into granulated cast iron and a zinc-containing product. The study object was the dust from the EAF of PJSC Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (Magnitogorsk, Chelyabinsk region). It has been established that the dust contains valuable components in the form of ZnFe2O4 and ZnO. The processing of EAFD involves the reduction of Fe and Zn in a charge from their oxygen-containing forms with C and CO. The content of the charge components was calculated in % as follows: EAFD—17.44; scale—51.33; hard coal—20.61; quartz sand—4.71; lime—5.91. The experiments in the high-temperature LHT 08/17 furnace (Germany) allowed for defining the optimal temperature regime for reduction melting. As a result of laboratory tests, granulated pig iron samples were obtained, containing in wt%: Fe—95.27; C—4.4; S—0.07, and others. Captured zinc-containing product after calcination (to remove halogens) contained 90.21 wt% ZnO. The resulting granulated pig iron is recommended as one of the charge components in electrometallurgical steel production. The zinc-containing product is recommended as a raw material for Zn production and others.

Abstract:Abstract Within the steelmaking industry, a large amount of zinc-bearing waste is produced which cannot be effectively treated through integrated steel mills. Concurrently, zinc smelters generate waste residues containing significant amounts of iron and zinc which are stored or landfilled. The zinc concentration of iron and steelmaking residues inhibits its recycling to the blast furnace but is insufficient to be sent directly to the zinc producers. Consequently, a means of up-concentration is required. The pilot HIsarna ironmaking furnace has shown potential for processing secondary iron-bearing resources. Furthermore, zinc can be concentrated in the off-gas flue dust, providing an enriched input for zinc smelters. The potential recyclability of blast furnace (BF) and basic oxygen furnace (BOF) dust and ‘goethite’ residue from the zinc industry has been studied. The input materials have been comprehensively characterized and their reduction–vaporization behavior, has been investigated. Individual samples were tested at temperatures of up to 1300 °C. Here, it was shown that minimal reduction of iron and volatilization of zinc occurred in the goethite and BOF samples. Conversely, even at 1000 °C, the BF dust showed complete reduction of iron and removal of zinc within 30 min. This was due to its high carbon content (40 wt%) which can act as a reductant. Consequently, mixtures of BOF dust and goethite with BF dust were studied. It has been shown that mixtures of 30:70 BF dust to goethite and 20:80 BF dust to BOF dust are suitable for recovering zinc to the gas phase and fully reducing the contained iron. Graphical Abstract

Modeling of Exchange Interactions in Melts Formed During Joint Smelting of Oxidized Nickel Ores and Pyrrhotite Concentrates

Abstract:An original methodology based on the use of experimental values of the conditional equilibrium constants in metallurgical calculations was employed to perform a theoretical modeling of the exchange interactions in melts formed during joint matte smelting of oxidized saprolite nickel ore and a product (cinder) of partial oxidizing roasting of pyrrhotite concentrate. It is shown that heating of the ore-cinder mixture (mass ratio ≈1.0) to 1,300°C will ensure the separation of the slag and matte phases with the optimal process parameters. The proposed smelting conditions were tested experimentally, the material composition of the products was studied by X-ray fluorescence and X-ray powder diffraction analyses, and the possibility of obtaining results close to those predicted theoretically was confirmed. By using a flux-free smelting (at 1,400°C) of the mixture, it became possible to convert at least 76.1% nickel, 79.9% cobalt, and 62.8% copper to matte, containing (wt.%): Ni — 8.4, Co — 0.39, Cu — 0.5, Fe — 56.8, S — 25.6, and O — 7.2. 75.3% of the matte phase consists of iron monosulfides, including nickeliferous pyrrhotites (Fe 17.574 Ni 0.24 S 20 and Fe 2.747 Ni 0.253 S 3 ). Cobalt is present as jaipurite (CoS), and copper is dissolved in pyrite (Cu 0.25 Fe 0.75 S 2 ) and in metallic iron (Cu 0.003 Fe 0.997 ). Low contents of non-ferrous metals in slag (0.24 wt.% Ni, 0.08 wt.% Co, and 0.04 wt.% Cu) are associated with the presence of significant amounts of metasilicates and free SiO 2 in the slag composition. A sufficient matte separation factor (5.5 for nickel, 5.7 for cobalt, and 4.5 for copper) and reduced desulfurization (≈0%) confirm the selected optimal conditions of joint ore-cinder smelting. The applied methodology of theoretical modeling and the obtained results can be used in the development of technologies for processing mineral and technogenic raw materials with low copper and nickel contents.

Abstract:The article presents the results of comprehensive thermodynamic modeling and laboratory tests conducted for smelting a complex ferroalloy of silicon, manganese, and chromium (Fe-Si-Mn-Cr) from chromium, medium-grade manganese ores, and high-ash coals from Kazakhstan. Thermodynamic analysis was performed using HSC Chemistry software to model the Fe-Si-Mn-Cr smelting process over a temperature range of 900–1800 °C. This analysis involved six actual charge compositions with solid reductant (Csolid) consumption ranging from 5 to 20 kg per 100 kg of Cr and Mn ore mixture. The mechanism of the combined carbothermic reduction of Cr, Mn, Si, and Fe was investigated using the Cr-Si-Al-Ca-Mn-Mg-O-C system. According to thermodynamic data, the optimal consumption of Csolid per 100 kg of ore mixture is 17 kg, and the optimal temperature range for smelting ferroalloys is between 1600 and 1700 °C. Laboratory tests were conducted in a high-temperature Tamman furnace at 1700 °C, resulting in experimental samples of the new complex ferroalloy with an average composition of 14.85% Fe, 14.05% Si, 7.55% Mn, 57.54% Cr, and 6.01% C, with P < 0.03% and S < 0.02%. The phase composition included (Cr, Fe, Mn)3Si and carbides Cr23C6 and (Fe, Mn)3C. The resulting alloy is suitable for alloying high-carbon and tool steels.

Abstract:The Ural region has a large number of metallurgical companies. The extraction of metals from ore is always accompanied by the accumulation of wastes. Currently, most of the wastes are stored in dumps and storage facilities forming technogenic deposits. One such that occupies huge areas is copper slag from the copper-smelting production. According to current estimations, about 2.2 tons of slag is formed for each ton of copper produced and about 24 million tons are produced annually [1]. In general, a copper slag contains about 35-45% iron and 0.4-0.5 copper, which indicates that this is a valuable secondary resource for recycling and utilization [33]. However, more than 80% of copper slag is not utilized, which makes it possible to consider this waste not only as a valuable material, but also as a potential hazard for the environment; it contaminates the soil and water with heavy elements [8]. Currently, only small amounts of the waste are recycled. In addition, technologies do not allow the complete extraction of valuable elements. This offers potential for the development of new highly efficient technologies for processing copper smelting wastes with extraction of valuable elements such as iron (Fe). Improvement of Fe quality requires a decrease in non-ferrous metal content, especially Cu. In recent years, extensive research was directed at the extraction of valuable materials from copper slags by high-temperature firing of copper conglomerates with subsequent magnetic separation or leaching of non-ferrous metals. However, these studies do not allow the complete processing of copper smelting slags. This work studies the production of iron-containing briquettes from copper-smelting slags, and their subsequent processing to obtain valuable products for metallurgical and oil companies. Abstract:The paper considers one of possible options for the waste-free processing of dumped masses of nickel slags, accumulated over the years of operation of some enterprises. This process includes the use of hydroand pyrometallurgical processing, which results in three products: iron sulfate, ferrosilicon with a small admixture of aluminum, and slag from the ferrosilicon smelting. The slag has a hardness of 7-7.5 Mohs and can be used as an abrasive powder for sandblasting, or as a raw material for production of high alumina cement. The resulting iron sulfate can subsequently be purified from the copper, nickel, magnesium, and aluminum impurities and brought to the existing GOST compositional requirements. The resulting ferrosilicon, whose silicon content is similar to that of the marked ferrosilicon FS 75 with an aluminum admixture, can be used for deoxidation and silicon alloying of all existing grades of steels and cast irons. In this case, specifications drawn up with participation of a consumer enterprise can be a regulatory document for such ferrosilicon. The slag obtained during the ferrosilicon smelting can also be defined within the framework of these specifications for the abrasive powder producing enterprises.

Abstract:Metallurgical dusts can be recycled through direct reduction in rotary hearth furnaces (RHFs) via addition into carbon-based composite pellets. While iron in the dust is recycled, several heavy and alkali metal elements harmful for blast furnace operation, including Zn, Pb, K, and Na, can also be separated and then recycled. However, there is a lack of understanding on thermochemical behavior related to direct reduction in an industrial-scale RHF, especially removal behavior of Zn, Pb, K, and Na, leading to technical issues in industrial practice. In this work, an integrated model of the direct reduction process in an industrial-scale RHF is described. The integrated model includes three mathematical submodels and one physical model, specifically, a three-dimensional (3-D) CFD model of gas flow and heat transfer in an RHF chamber, a one-dimensional (1-D) CFD model of direct reduction inside a pellet, an energy/mass equilibrium model, and a reduction physical experiment using a Si-Mo furnace. The model is validated by comparing the simulation results with measurements in terms of furnace temperature, furnace pressure, and pellet indexes. The model is then used for describing in-furnace phenomena and pellet behavior in terms of heat transfer, direct reduction, and removal of a range of heavy and alkali metal elements under industrial-scale RHF conditions. The results show that the furnace temperature in the preheating section should be kept at a higher level in an industrial-scale RHF compared with that in a pilot-scale RHF. The removal rates of heavy and alkali metal elements inside the composite pellet are all faster than iron metallization, specifically in the order of Pb, Zn, K, and Na.
