Abstract:This work investigated the microstructures, texture evolution, and mechanical properties of newly designed metastable β type Ti–10Mo–6Zr–4Sn–3Nb (wt.%) alloys for biomedical devices, which were subjected to cold swaging deformation with reductions of 15–75%. With the increment in the reduction of swaging deformation, the grains are broken and gradually refined, and stress-induced martensite transformation takes place, resulting in the formation of the α” phase. Moreover, the {1 1 2} <1 1 1> and {1 1 0} <1 1 2> fibers turn into γ-fiber {1 1 1} <1 1 0> and α-fiber {1 1 2} <1 1 0> with the increment in the swaging reduction. The α-fiber texture in particular, first weakens and then strengthens during cold deformation. Under the combined effect of sub-structures, grain refinement, and texture evolution, the strength of the alloy is gradually enhanced with the increment in the cold deformation reduction. The solution-treated alloy bar shows superior cold workability in the swaging process. The plasticity remains at a moderate level because the initial grains have not been completely broken at the beginning of cold swaging deformation. The elastic modulus of the alloy shows a downward trend with an increasing reduction, which is related to the dislocation multiplication, grain refinement, and grain orientation evolution during cold swaging deformation.

Abstract:Nitrogen-alloyed austenitic stainless steel QN1803 (2.0%Ni-3.5%Ni) has been developed to replace the conventional 304 stainless steel (8%Ni). Both the microstructure and the corrosion resistance of both types of stainless steels in the annealed state have been extensively studied, whereas those in the cold strained state have not been studied sufficiently. The aforementioned stainless steels often undergo cold forming processes during industrial applications, such as straightening, leveling, and bending, etc., which may lead to the changes of microstructure and corrosion resistances as well as the performance. In this study, the tensile tests were performed with different tensile strains for both nitrogenalloyed QN1803 and the conventional 304 stainless steels. The microstructure and strengthening, as well as the toughening mechanisms were investigated using EBSD, XRD, and TEM. The corrosion resistance and its mechanism under different tensile strains were evaluated and analyzed via electrochemical workstation, acid corrosion tests, OM, and SEM. Notably, the microstructures of both QN1803 and 304 stainless steels are changed from dislocation plugging to a' martensite with the increase in tensile strain. The yield strength of QN1803 stainless steel is 26% higher, while its elongation is 6.6% lower than that of 304 stainless steels, respectively. This could be attributed to both the higher nitrogen content and the lower transition temperature of 50% martensite induced by 30% strain (M-d30) for QN1803 stainless steel as compared with that for 304 stainless steel. As a result, the volume fraction of the strain-induced martensite for QN1803 stainless steel under tensile strain is lower, leading to the lower toughening effect than that of 304 stainless steel. Interestingly, the experiments show that the tensile strain has a minor effect on the intergranular corrosion whereas noticeably negative effect on both the pitting and the sulfuric acid corrosion resistances of both stainless steels. Not surprisingly, 304 stainless steel undergoes a more remarkable decrease in both the pitting and the sulfuric acid corrosion resistances with the increase in tensile strain as compared with QN1803 stainless steel. This could be well understood since martensite could lead to the destruction or deterioration of the passive film on the stainless steel surface, producing an unstable dissolution-generation state during corrosion, thus reducing the corrosion resistance after tensile deformation. In conclusion, the yield strength is enhanced, ductility is slightly impaired, and both the pitting and the sulfuric acid corrosion resistances under tensile deformation are improved by nitrogen alloying. Based on these technical advantages, together with the nickel saving effect, QN1803 stainless steel has been applied in various industrial areas, such as building, construction, and home appliance, etc.
High strain rate induced shear banding within additively manufactured AISI 316L

Abstract:The effects of post-processing via cold/hot rotary swaging, combined with high strain rate deformation, on formation of shear bands and deformation induced martensite within AISI 316L steel prepared by Selective Laser Melting are investigated. The as-built sample exhibited randomly oriented grains and residual porosity, which was reduced/eliminated by rotary swaging and subsequent high strain rate deformation. Hand in hand with significant changes in grain morphology after swaging (grain elongation and refinement, especially under cold conditions) and high strain rate processing (formation of shear bands and deformation induced martensite), the combined deformation imparted substantial hardening and resulted in microhardness increase by more than 20 %, primarily due to the occurring martensitic transformation. The structure changes were observed especially for the cold processed sample, due to aggravated plastic flow and hindered movement of generated partial dislocations.

Abstract:The deformation microstructures and mechanical properties of a 316L austenitic stainless steel subjected to large strain cold or warm plate rolling are studied. The cold or warm rolling was carried out at room temperature or 573 K, respectively, to different total true strains up to 3. The structural changes are characterized by the development of nanocrystalline structures with the transverse grain size of about 80 or 160 nm at room temperature or 573 K, respectively. The evolution of nanocrystalline structure under cold working conditions (room temperature) is assisted by the development of mechanical twinning and partial martensitic transformation that result in rapid grain refinement. The development of nanocrystalline structures during cold/warm working is accompanied by significant strengthening. The yield strength approaches 1 680 or 1 070 MPa after cold or warm rolling to a total strain of 3, respectively.

Abstract:A combination of conventional extrusion (CE) and rotary swaging (RS) was applied to Mg-1Mn-0.5Al-0.5Ca-xZn (x = 0, 0.5) alloys to obtain high-strength Mg alloys. The microstructure and mechanical properties of as-extruded and as-swaged alloys were investigated in this study. Compared to the as-extruded alloys, the strength of as-swaged alloys increased significantly. The edge region of the as-swaged Mg-1Mn-0.5Al-0.5Ca-0.5Zn exhibits excellent comprehensive mechanical properties of the yield strength (YS) of 379 MPa, ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 400 MPa and fracture elongation (FE) of 10%. The high strength is attributed to fine grains (1.42 μm), higher density of nanoscale spheroidal Al-Mn precipitates and dislocations caused by RS. The microstructure is refined and the unrecrystallized (unDRXed) fractions decrease due to the formation of twins and high frequency of low angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) during RS. Some initial large Al 8 Mn 5 and (Mg, Al) 2 Ca phases are crushed and dissolved into the matrix, resulting in the formation of more nanoscale dispersive Al-Mn particles. The texture intensity become stronger after RD which is also contribute to the increasing strength.

Abstract:Microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of 6Cr13 martensitic stainless steel subjected to cold rolling and subsequent heat treatments were investigated. The microstructure was checked by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The phases were identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results show that the carbides are dissolved and fragmented during the cold rolling process, and the size of the carbides decreases with increasing the rolling reduction. The refinement of the microstructure, including martensite laths, twins and carbides, occurs due to the dislocation activities induced by the cold rolling. A high density of dislocations persists in the steel even after the heat treatments. Furthermore, reversed austenite forms during tempering of the steel with a rolling reduction of 67% at 200 degrees C and 300 degrees C. The steel with a reduction of 67% exhibits an ultra-high strength of -1913 MPa, an elongation of -7% and a microhardness of -58 HRC after the heat treatments (i.e., quenched at 1050 degrees C and tempering at 200 degrees C), which is attributed to the synergetic effect of microstructure refinement, the formation of reversed austenite and the high retained dislocation density.

Abstract:The gradient nano-grained (GNG) structure was formed on the top layer of AISI 304 in the presence of coarse grains (CG) by means of ultrasonic impact treatment (UIT). The impact velocity was 5m/s and the coverage changed from 3000% to 9000% in order to obtain the microstructure GNG/CG materials. The tensile test and small punch test (SPT) were further carried out in order to investigate the mechanical behaviors of the GNG/CG 304 at the different stress states. The results indicated that the yield strength of GNG/CG 304 obtained by tensile test and SPT increased at the small expense of ductility. The stress triaxiality T played an important role in the deformation behavior of GNG/CG 304. An increased T-value in the region of biaxial stretching of small punch specimen (T=2/3) led to an improved ductility compared with that noted in the case of uniaxial tensile specimen. The strain rate sensitivity m of GNG/CG 304 was 0.0468 that was estimated to be 25-fold greater than the coarse material. The yield strength of GNG/CG 304 at 400°C was 1.6-fold greater than the coarse material at ambient temperature due to the thermal stability of the GNG layer. Thus, the GNG structure could improve the comprehensive mechanical performances of AISI 304 with a balance of strength and ductility.
Effect of Rotary Swaging on the Structure, Mechanical Characteristics and Aging Behavior of Cu-0.5%Cr-0.08%Zr Alloy

Abstract:A study of the effect of rotary swaging (RS) on the microstructure and properties of the pre-extruded and pre-quenched Cu-0.5%Cr-0.08%Zr alloy was performed. RS leads to the formation of an ultrafine-grained (UFG) microstructure. UFG structure formation caused by RS increases the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) up to 443 ± 5 MPa and 597 ± 9 MPa for pre-quenched and pre-extruded alloys, respectively. Additionally, the reduction in ductility occurs after RS. It should be noted that UTS is increased for a pre-quenched alloy, while the strength of a pre-extruded alloy is dropped. The growth of UTS for the pre-quenched alloy is associated with the precipitation of fine Cr particles, whereas the recovery processes in the pre-extruded alloy induce the reduction in its UTS. An additional advantage of RS is an increase in the fatigue limit of the pre-quenched alloy up to 265 MPa, and of the pre-extruded alloy up to 345 MPa. The combination of extrusion and RS allows for the increase of the UTS of the Cu-0.5%Cr-0.08%Zr alloy up to 597 ± 9 MPa, while the levels of ductility and electrical conductivity are 10.9 ± 0.9% and 82.0 ± 1.7% IACS, respectively.
Simultaneous Improvement of Yield Strength and Ductility at Cryogenic Temperature by Gradient Structure in 304 Stainless Steel

Abstract:The tensile properties and the corresponding deformation mechanism of the graded 304 stainless steel (ss) at both room and cryogenic temperatures were investigated and compared with those of the coarse-grained (CGed) 304 ss. Gradient structures were found to have excellent synergy of strength and ductility at room temperature, and both the yield strength and the uniform elongation were found to be simultaneously improved at cryogenic temperature in the gradient structures, as compared to those for the CG sample. The hetero-deformation-induced (HDI) hardening was found to play a more important role in the gradient structures as compared to the CG sample and be more obvious at cryogenic temperature as compared to that at room temperature. The central layer in the gradient structures provides stronger strain hardening during tensile deformation at both temperatures, due to more volume fraction of martensitic transformation. The volume fraction of martensitic transformation in the gradient structures was found to be much higher at cryogenic temperature, resulting in a much stronger strain hardening at cryogenic temperature. The amount of martensitic transformation at the central layer of the gradient structures is observed to be even higher than that for the CG sample at cryogenic temperature, which is one of the origins for the simultaneous improvement of strength and ductility by the gradient structures at cryogenic temperature.

Improvement of strength and ductility in a gradient structured Ni fabricated by severe torsion deformation

Abstract:The tensile deformation behavior and microstructure evolution of gradient structured (GS) Ni processed by severe torsion deformation (STD) were systematically investigated. The results show that the gradient shear strain from STD introduces gradient distributions of grain size, microhardness, frequency of low angle grain boundaries, Σ3 twins and geometrically necessary dislocations (GND) density along the radial direction. With the increasing torsional angle of STD, the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength increase correspondingly while the uniform elongation first decreases and then increases. When the torsional angle increases to a maximum torsional revolution of 16, this specific GS Ni undergoes a maximum shear strain and lead to a promoted strength-ductility synergy, showing yield strength of 592 MPa, ultimate tensile strength of 1019 MPa and uniform elongation of 8.58%, as well as the highest work hardening rate. The simultaneous improvement of mechanical property is due to the strong partitioning between the fine grain region and central coarse grain region, which induces a significant work-hardening at the early plastic deformation stage. Therefore, a high shear strain and delicate control of its gradient in STD can lead to a unique gradient structure in metals, which is a good strategy to improve the mechanical properties of rod products.

Abstract:Manganese stabilizes austenite and reduces stacking fault energy in face‐centered cubic (FCC) structures, facilitating phase transformation in FeCrMn AISI 201 steel during cold drawing. This study examines phase transformation from FCC to hexagonal close‐packed and body‐centered cubic structures, using X‐ray diffraction and electron backscatter diffraction. Results show that 50% true strain optimally balances strength and ductility, with significant increases in yield strength and ultimate tensile strength but reduced elongation. Manganese stabilizes the austenite and reduces the stacking fault energy in face‐centered cubic (FCC) structures, promoting the formation of hexagonal and cubic structures. This study investigates the phase transformation and mechanical behavior of extremely low‐carbon FeCrMn austenitic stainless AISI 201 steel subjected to cold drawing in three stages, ultimately reaching a true strain of 0.93. The objective is to examine the transformation from the parent FCC structure to hexagonal close‐packed and body‐centered cubic structures as a combination of transformation‐induced plasticity and twinning‐induced plasticity phenomena. X‐ray diffraction and electron backscatter diffraction analyses are utilized to investigate phase transformations under significant plastic deformation and the crystallographic orientation relationships between phases. Additionally, tensile and hardness tests are performed to assess the impact of plastic deformation on mechanical properties. Results indicate that a true strain of 50% is optimal for balancing strength and ductility in CrMnFe austenitic stainless steel. After applying a true strain of ε1 = 26.7%, yield strength (YS) increases by 192% and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) by 35%, while elongation reduces by 41%. With a further strain of ε2 = 57.5%, YS increases by 71% and UTS by 44%, but elongation drastically decreases by 94%. Applying the final strain of ε3 = 94.0%, YS and UTS only increase by 3% and 2%, respectively, while elongation further reduced by 40%. These findings suggest that a true strain of 50% shall be considered the maximum reduction for maintaining a balance between strength and ductility in CrMnFe austenitic stainless steel.

Strength‐Ductility Synergy in an Austenitic Stainless Steel Processed by Warm Rolling and Subsequent Cryogenic Treatment

Abstract:The warm‐rolled and cryogenically treated sample achieved exceptional mechanical properties, with a yield strength of ≈949 MPa and elongation of ≈56.2%. Its high strength stems from grain refinement, increased dislocation density, and martensite formation via cryogenic treatment. Deformation is stage‐dependent: early dislocation slip, mid‐stage transformation‐induced plasticity (TRIP) effect, and late‐stage martensite slip. Fine grains delay TRIP, enhancing ductility. The austenitic stainless steel undergo warm rolling, followed by cryogenic treatment. The warm‐rolled and cryogenically treated (WR‐CT) sample exhibits superior strength and ductility compared to the warm‐rolled (WR) sample, achieving a yield strength of 949 MPa and an elongation of ≈56.2%. The enhanced strength is attributed to the higher dislocation density, additional grain refinement, and the presence of martensite in the WR‐CT sample. The WR and WR‐CT samples exhibit similar deformation mechanisms. In the initial stage, dislocation slip predominantly governs the deformation. During the intermediate stage, the transformation‐induced plasticity (TRIP) effect dominates the deformation mechanism. In the final stage, nearly all austenite transforms into martensite, and deformation mainly occurs via dislocation slip within the martensite phase. However, in the WR‐CT sample, the TRIP effect is delayed during the stable processing stage (≈8–23%) due to the higher mechanical stability of austenite, resulting from further grain refinement and higher dislocation density. Additionally, the coordinated deformation of strain‐induced martensite with varying orientations contributes to delayed necking, achieving an optimal balance between strength and ductility.

Abstract:Mycosis fungoides (MF) and its leukemic variant, the Sezary syndrome (ss), are the most common cutaneous lymphomas, being characterized by progressive evolution and interrupted by periods of remission. The etiology of these entities is obscure and the risk factors for their development are not well understood. In 1988, Weinstock and Horm^ investigated the descriptive epidemiology of MF. From 1973 to 1984, 721 new cases were reported to nine cancer registry offices in the United States; this corresponds to a rate of 0.29 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants per year. Older age groups were predominantly affected; the incidence in blacks was twice that of Caucasians; and men were afflicted twice as often as women. During this period, a dramatic increase in incidence of 3.2 times was recorded. Relative differences in age, sex, ^^^ race were maintained. The percentage of MF cases in relation to the total numbers of lymphomas also increased from 1.6 to 2.8%. It can be argued that an iroprovement in the diagnostic criteria could be responsible for these increases and that this would reflect a better detection of the disease rather than a real increase in incidence. If the latter supposition held true, these patients would also show an increase in their survival rate because they would be diagnosed and treated earlier and better. This improvement is not apparent from the epidemiologists' data that indicate we are possibly facing a true increase in incidence.
Cryorolling impacts on microstructure and mechanical properties of AISI 316 LN austenitic stainless steel

Abstract:Microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of AISI 316 LN austenitic stainless steel (SS) after cryorolling with different strains were investigated by means of optical, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometer, microhardness tester, and tensile testing system. The deformation-induced martensite transition and the deformation microstructure occurred during cryorolling process were always composed of high-density dislocations, deformation twins, and deformation-induced martensites. Following the strain, the dislocation density in deformation microstructure approached saturation state and the volume fraction of deformation twins combined with deformation-induced martensites increased significantly. At the 70% strain, original austenite was transformed into martensite completely. Further increasing the strain to 90% would refine the martensitic lamellae to nanoscale. The deformation degree also led to remarkable increase of the strength and hardness of the cryorolled SS, and drastic reductions of the elongation. Due to the cryorolling, the tensile fracture morphology changed from typical ductile rupture to a mixture of quasi-cleavage and ductile fracture.

Abstract:The research aims to analyze the impact that severe plastic deformation arising during Rotary Swaging has on mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of a near-a-titanium alloy Ti-2.5Al-2.6Zr (Russian industrial name PT7M). The nature of corrosion decay in fine-grained alloys caused by hot salt corrosion is known to vary from pit corrosion to intercrystalline corrosion at the onset of recrystallization processes. Resistance to hot salt corrosion in a fine-grained titanium alloy Ti-2.5Al-2.6Zr is shown to depend on the structural-phase state of grain boundaries that varies during their migration as a result of covering corrosive doping elements (aluminum, zirconium) distributed in the crystal lattice of a titanium alloy.

Abstract:One hopeful path to realize good comprehensive mechanical properties in metallic materials is to accomplish homogeneous nanocrystalline (NC) or ultrafine grained (UFG) structure with low dislocation density. In this work, high pressure torsion deformation followed by appropriate annealing was performed on 316 stainless steel (SS). For the first time, we successfully obtained NC/UFG 316 SS having uniform microstructures with various average grain sizes ranging from 46 nm to 2.54 μm and low dislocation densities. Dislocation scarcity in NC/UFG grains was found bringing significant extra enhancement in strength in addition to normal grain boundary hardening, which provided great freedom in tailoring mechanical property of the material with the wide range of average grain sizes. Among the series, an unprecedentedly high yield strength (2.34 GPa) was achieved at the smallest grain size of 46 nm, in which dislocation scarcity induced hardening accounting for 57% of the strength. On the other hand, exceptional strength-ductility synergy with high yield strength (900 MPa) and large uniform elongation (27%) was obtained in the fully recrystallized specimen having the grain size of 0.38 μm, the finest recrystallized grain size ever reported. The high yield stress and scarcity of dislocation sources in recrystallized UFGs activated stacking faults and deformation twins nucleating from grain boundaries during straining, and their interaction with dislocations allowed for sustainable strain hardening, which also agreed with the plaston concept recently proposed. The multiple deformation modes activated, together with the effective strengthening mechanisms, were responsible for the outstanding comprehensive mechanical performance of the material.

Abstract:The effect of aging treatments at various temperatures on the mechanical properties and microstructure of 10B21 cold heading steel with a 20% reduction in area (ε = 0.1) was investigated. The mechanical properties were evaluated based on tensile tests and hardness tests, while the evolution of microstructure was observed by using an optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results reveal that aging treatment enhance the strength and hardness of 10B21 cold heading steel after drawing, and the highest values of strength and hardness are attained at an aging temperature of 300 °C. Specifically, the yield and ultrahigh tensile strength after aging at 300 °C are measured at 620 MPa and 685 MPa, respectively, which are 30 MPa and 50 MPa higher than the cold-drawn sample. Moreover, the hardness after aging at 300 °C reaches 293 HV, which has an increase of 30 HV compared to the cold-drawn state. The improvement in mechanical properties may be related to the strain-aging mechanism and the increased density of dislocations. In addition, the analysis of the TEM results reveal that the presence of the second-phase Ti(C,N) contributes to pinning the dislocations, whereas the dislocations are pinned between the cementite (Fe3C) lamellar and stacked at the grain boundaries, leading to strain hardening of the material.

Abstract:The short-chain forming process using rotary swaging (RS) is an important method of achieving the manufacturing of lightweight axles. Axle steel, like 42CrMo, is widely used in many types of axles and shafts; however, there is no existing research on rotary-swaged axle steel's mechanical properties. It makes sense to carry out a comprehensive study on the effect of RS on the mechanical behaviors of axle steel rods. In this study, a 42CrMo steel rod was processed by RS through ten passes. The tensile properties, torsion properties, compression properties, and fatigue properties were tested. There was an overall improvement in the torsional and fatigue performance after RS. Combined with a finite element analysis (FEM), the uneven distribution of the dislocations and existence of the elongation material were inferred to have caused the different modes of the mechanical behaviors. Fracture surfaces were analyzed and the results showed that the fracture pattern had changed. There existed a competitive relation between the internal fatigue cracks and external cracks, which could be attributed to uneven strain hardening. This research proved the advantages of RS in the processing of axle parts, which mainly benefitted the torsional working conditions, and provided evidence for a new processing route for lightweight axles with RS.

Abstract:Stainless steels with high mechanical properties and corrosion resistance are promising structural materials for the next generation of aerospace and some niche industries. In this work, we pre-formed a gradient nanostructured (GNS) surface layer on 316L stainless steel by surface mechanical rolling treatment (SMRT) and subsequently annealed it at 700 °C. Tensile tests showed that the strength-ductility synergy was enhanced in the annealed-SMRT sample, while the grain size and hardness in the GNS layer retained rather stable. In addition, a remarkable Cr-enrichment was found in the GNS surface layer after annealing, resulting in a significantly enhanced corrosion resistance. The underlying mechanisms on the microstructure, composition and phases evolutions, as well as their effects on deformation and corrosion behavior, were analyzed in the annealed-SMRT sample. This work provides insights on developing a simple thermomechanical approach to produce stainless steels with enhanced mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.
