Abstract:In the rapidly emerging field of layered two-dimensional functional materials, black phosphorus, the P-counterpart of graphene, is a potential candidate for various applications, e.g., nanoscale optoelectronics, rechargeable ion batteries, electrocatalysts, thermoelectrics, solar cells, and sensors. Black phosphorus has shown superior chemical sensing performance; in particular, it is selective for the detection of NO2, an environmental toxic gas, for which black phosphorus has highlighted high sensitivity at a ppb level. In this work, by applying a multiscale characterization approach, we demonstrated a stability and functionality improvement of nickel-decorated black phosphorus films for gas sensing prepared by a simple, reproducible, and affordable deposition technique. Furthermore, we studied the electrical behavior of these films once implemented as functional layers in gas sensors by exposing them to different gaseous compounds and under different relative humidity conditions. Finally, the influence on sensing performance of nickel nanoparticle dimensions and concentration correlated to the decoration technique and film thickness was investigated.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Ultrahigh Sensitivity and Layer-Dependent Sensing Performance of Phosphorene-Based Gas Sensors

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials have attracted significant attention for device applications because of their unique structures and outstanding properties. Here, a field-effect transistor (FET) sensor device is fabricated based on 2D phosphorene nanosheets (PNSs). The PNS sensor exhibits an ultrahigh sensitivity to NO 2 in dry air and the sensitivity is dependent on its thickness. A maximum response is observed for 4.8-nm-thick PNS, with a sensitivity up to 190% at 20 parts per billion (p.p.b.) at room temperature. First-principles calculations combined with the statistical thermodynamics modelling predict that the adsorption density is ∼10 15 cm −2 for the 4.8-nm-thick PNS when exposed to 20 p.p.b. NO 2 at 300 K. Our sensitivity modelling further suggests that the dependence of sensitivity on the PNS thickness is dictated by the band gap for thinner sheets (<10 nm) and by the effective thickness on gas adsorption for thicker sheets (>10 nm).
Phosphorene as a superior gas sensor: Selective adsorption and distinct I-V response

Abstract:Recent reports on the fabrication of phosphorene, i.e., mono- or few-layer black phosphorus, have raised exciting prospects of an outstanding two-dimensional (2D) material that exhibits excellent properties for nanodevice applications. Here we study by first-principles calculations the adsorption of CO, CO2, NH3, NO and NO2 gas molecules on a mono-layer phosphorene. Our results predict superior sensing performance of phosphorene that rivals or even surpasses other 2D materials such as graphene and MoS2. We determine the optimal adsorption positions of these molecules on the phosphorene and identify molecular doping, i.e., charge transfer between the molecules and phosphorene, as the driving mechanism for the high adsorption strength. We further calculated the current-voltage (I-V) relation using a non-equilibrium Greens function (NEGF) formalism. The transport features show large (one to two orders of magnitude) anisotropy along different (armchair or zigzag) directions, which is consistent with the anisotropic electronic band structure of phosphorene. Remarkably, the I-V relation exhibits distinct responses with a marked change of the I-V relation along either the armchair or the zigzag directions depending on the type of molecules. Such selectivity and sensitivity to adsorption makes phosphorene a superior gas sensor that promises wide-ranging applications.

Abstract:Instability of 2D phosphorene material is the major obstacle for its broad applications. Herein phosphorene is sandwiched with self-assembled iron porphyrin monolayers on both sides (I-Phene) to significantly enhance stability. Iron porphyrin has strong interaction with phosphorene through formation of PFe bonds. The sandwich structure offers excellent stability of phosphorene by both-sided monolayer protections for an intact phosphorene structure more than 40 days under ambient conditions. Meanwhile, the electron transfer between iron porphyrin and phosphorene result in a high oxidation state of Fe, making I-Phene biomimetic sensitivity toward oxidation of nitric oxide (NO) for 2.5 and 4.0 times higher than phosphorene and iron-porphyrin alone, respectively. Moreover, I-Phene exhibits excellent selectivity, a wide detection range, and a low detection limit at a low oxidation potential of 0.82 V, which is comparable with the reported noble metal based biomimetic sensors while ranking the best among all non-noble biomimetic ones. I-Phene is further used for real-time monitoring NO released from cells. This work provides effective approach against phosphorene degrading for outstanding stability, which has universal significance for its various important applications, and holds a great promise for a highly sensitive biomimetic sensor in live-cell assays.

Abstract:Since its discovery, the environmental instability of exfoliated black phosphorus (2D bP) has emerged as a challenge that hampers its wide application in chemistry, physics, and materials science. Many studies have been carried out to overcome this drawback. Here we show a relevant enhancement of ambient stability in few-layer bP decorated with nickel nanoparticles as compared to pristine bP. In detail, the behavior of the Ni-functionalized material exposed to ambient conditions in the dark is accurately studied by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Raman Spectroscopy, and high resolution X-ray Photoemission and Absorption Spectroscopy. These techniques provide a morphological and quantitative insight of the oxidation process taking place at the surface of the bP flakes. In the presence of Ni nanoparticles (NPs), the decay time of 2D bP to phosphorus oxides is more than three time slower compared to pristine bP, demonstrating an improved structural stability within twenty months of observation.

Abstract:The development of gas sensors based on two-dimensional (2D) layered materials has received lots of focus attributing to their excellent gas sensitivity. Here, a black phosphorus (BP) gas sensor device is fabricated based on high-quality few-layered BP microribbons using a facile route. Although BP is well known to oxidize in ambient conditions, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) mapping manifests that the few-layered BP microribbons undergo slight oxidation and contamination during the grinding process. It is interesting that the surface and side of BP microribbons have nanoscale thin films and step-like nanoscale thin films, respectively, owing to the in-plane slip of the few-layered BP microribbons in the process of grinding, which are different from the conventional BP bulk crystals. The layered BP microribbon gas sensor demonstrated a high response to low-concentration NO2 and a very low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.4 ppb of NO2 under N2 and air conditions, which is the lowest LOD for NO2 detection reported so far. The mechanisms for excellently sensitive detection of NO2 for the BP microribbons have been investigated by first-principles calculations combined with experiment results, revealing that the sensitization mechanisms of the BP microribbon sensor are abundant nanoscale thin films, an optimum bandgap range with optimal carrier concentration, a hierarchical homojunction structure, and strong adsorption energy to NO2. In addition, the BP microribbon sensor demonstrated high selectivity to NO2, a low LOD under a high relative humidity, and good repeatability. Metal doped black phosphorene for gas sensing and catalysis: A first-principles perspective

Abstract:Transition metal doped black phosphorene is widely studied for gas sensing and catalysis applications. In this work, we find that for Au, Ag and Pt dopants, the black phosphorene with two P atoms being substituted by one metal atom is more stable than the one with only one P atom being substituted. Among them, Au-2P and Ag-2P can be used for NO gas detection and sensing under strain between −6% and 6%. Au-, Ag- and Pt-2P all show better catalytic performance toward hydrogen evolution reaction than pristine black phosphorene. However, only Au-2P and Ag-2P can maintain the excellent catalytic activity under extra strain in the range of −6% to 6%. This work is not only an important supplement to the basic research of doped black phosphorene, but also important for guiding preparation and practical applications of doped black phosphorene in the future.

Abstract:The adsorption behaviour of hazardous gas molecules, namely nitrogen dioxide (NO$_2$) and ammonia (NH$_3$), on phosphorene nanosheet (PNS) was explored by means of ab initio technique. To improve the structural solidity of pristine PNS, we have introduced the passivation of hydrogen and fluorine at the terminated edge. The structural solidity of both hydrogen and fluorine passivated PNS is verified in terms of formation energy. The main objective of this research work is to probe NO$_2$ and NH$_3$ gases using PNS as a base sensing material. The adsorption of various preferential adsorption sites of these gas molecules is studied in accordance with the average HOMO-LUMO gap changes, natural-bond-orbital (NBO) charge transfer, HOMO-LUMO gap, and adsorption energy. Notably, the negative value of adsorption energy is found upon the adsorption of NO$_2$ and NH$_3$ on PNS and it is in the range of $-1.36$ to $-2.45$ eV. The findings of the present research work recommend that the hydrogenated and fluorinated PNS can be effectively used as a chemical sensor against NO$_2$ and NH$_3$ molecules.
First-principles study of CO and NO adsorption on pristine and transition metal doped blue phosphorene

Abstract:<p>First-principles calculations within the density functional theory (DFT-D2 method) is carried out to systematically investigate the structural, energetic, electronic and magnetic properties of toxic CO and NO gas molecules on pristine and transition metal (TM) atom (Fe, Co, Ni, Pd, Ag and Pt) doped blue phosphorene. Our calculations show that the CO and NO molecules are physisorbed on pristine blue phosphorene due to small adsorption energies, charge transfer, and large adsorption distances of the adsorbed systems. TM doping can significantly enhance the interaction between the gas molecules and the blue phosphorene, leading to the CO and NO molecules absorbed on TM doped blue phosphorene belong to chemisorption with relatively large adsorption energies and charge transfer, except for CO adsorbed on Ag doped blue phosphorene. Meanwhile, the enhancing interaction between the gas molecules and TM doped blue phosphorene can dramatically induce magnetism and electrical conductivity changes. These results indicate that TM doped blue phosphorene is a potential candidate to develop novel two-dimensional phosphorene-based gas sensors.</p>

Abstract:Phosphorene, a new elemental two-dimensional material, has attracted increasing attention owing to its intriguing electronic properties. In particular, pristine phospohorene, due to its ultrahigh surface-volume ratio and high chemical activity, has been shown to be promising for gas sensing (Abbas et al 2015 ACS Nano 9 5618). To further enhance its sensing ability, we perform first-principles calculations based on density functional theory to study substitutionally doped phosphorene with 17 different atoms, focusing on structures, energetics, electronic properties and gas sensing. Our calculations reveal that anionic X (X = O, C and S) dopants have a large binding energy and highly dispersive electronic states, signifying the formation of covalent X-P bonds and thus strong structural stability. Alkali atom (Li and Na) doping is found to donate most of the electrons in the outer s-orbital by forming ionic bonds with P, and the band gap decreases by pushing down the conduction band, suggesting that the optical and electronic properties of the doped phosphorene can be tailored. For doping with VIIIB-group (Fe, Co and Ni) elements, a strong affinity is predicted and the binding energy and charge transfer are correlated strongly with their electronegativity. By examining NO molecule adsorption, we find that these metal doped phosphorenes (MDPs) in general exhibit a significantly enhanced chemical activity compared with pristine phosphorene. Our study suggests that substitutionally doped phosphorene shows many intriguing electronic and optic properties different from pristine phosphorene and MDPs are promising in chemical applications involving molecular adsorption and desorption processes, such as materials growth, catalysis, gas sensing and storage.

However, there remains a need to explore structural modification strategies for optimizing the sluggish desorption process caused by the extensive porosity and strong adsorption effect of metal sites. Herein, we reported a 2D bimetallic phthalocyanine-based COF (COF-CuNiPc) as chemiresistive gas sensors that exhibited a high gas-sensing performance to nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Bimetallic COF-CuNiPc with an asymmetric synergistic effect achieves a fast adsorption/desorption process to NO2. It is demonstrated that the COF-CuNiPc can detect 50 ppb NO2 with a recovery time of 7 s assisted by ultraviolet illumination. Compared with single-metal phthalocyanine-based COFs (COF-CuPc and COF-NiPc), the bimetallic structure of COF-CuNiPc can provide a proper band gap to interact with NO2 gas molecules. The CuNiPc heterometallic active site expands the overlap of d-orbitals, and the optimized electronic arrangement accelerates the adsorption/desorption processes. The concept of a synergistic effect enabled by bimetallic phthalocyanines in this work can provide an innovative direction to design high-performance chemiresistive gas sensors.

Abstract:Proper morphology, surface and interface structure designing are required to obtain efficient gas sensing and photocatalytic materials. In the present work, ultra-thin NiO single-crystalline porous nanosheets with dominant {1 1 1} crystal facets (denoted as SP-NiO) and hierarchical NiO porous microspheres (denoted as HP-NiO) supported highly dispersed Pt nanoparticles with controllable sizes were designed and synthesized. Their gas sensing and photocatalytic performance were investigated. It was found that both the formaldehyde sensing and methyl orange photocatalytic degradation performance were greatly enhanced by decorating Pt nanoparticles on SP-NiO, while Pt nanoparticles decoration contributed little to the improved photocatalytic performance of HP-NiO. The results indicated that surface structure of the NiO support could also produce significant impact on the activity of Pt/NiO heterojunctions. Moreover, Pt decorated SP-NiO with stable structure showed a marked long-term stability with negligible attenuation of gas sensitivity (less than 5%) for 45 days, while Pt decorated HP-NiO exhibited obvious attenuation of gas sensitivity (more than 30%) due to the structural collapse. The work not only offers promising materials for gas sensing and photocatalytic application, but also brings new dawn for the designing of efficient p-type metal oxides gas sensing and photocatalytic materials through the synergistic effect of single-crystalline porous structures modulation, crystal facets engineering and facet-selective deposition of highly-dispersed Pt nanoparticles.

Abstract:Objective/Hypothesis: A known risk for patients taking angiotensin converting enzyme‐inhibitors (ACE‐Is) is angioedema that can involve the face, lips, oral cavity, and larynx. Such upper airway obstruction may be severe enough to require an emergency department visit or even necessitate prompt airway intervention. Once a patient has had an episode of ACE‐inhibitor induced angioedema (AIIA), certainly a thrust of continuing case management would be to avoid the occurrence of subsequent episodes of AIIA that potentially can be life‐threatening. Nevertheless, recurrent episodes of AIIA do occur. This study aims to characterize a patient's risk for recurrent AIIA, determine the cause for repeat episodes of AIIA and recommend steps to be taken to minimize the recurrence of AIIA.

Abstract:Surface chemistry plays an essential role in gas-sensing applications, enabling significant improvements in the sensing performance. This study investigates the influence of the graphene oxide (GO) synthesis route on the sensitivity to NO 2 gas at room temperature (25 °C) and 100 °C in a dry and humid atmosphere. GO powders were synthesized using both the classical Hummers method (HGO), and an improved version of the Hummers method (IGO) using a mixture of phosphoric and sulfuric acids. The subsequent reduction (resulting in rHGO and rIGO, respectively) aimed to enhance the electrical properties and procure nanomaterials sensitive to surface adsorbates. In contrast to the HGO, both IGO and rIGO samples exhibited a transient sensor response and an outstanding recovery performance, which was attributed to the existence of phosphate groups in the latter samples. Notably, the rIGO sample achieved a 23-fold increase in response to NO 2 compared to rHGO. Additionally, the limit of detection (LOD) was calculated to be 0.98 ppb at 100 °C. Computational studies considering models of GO and of GO with phosphorus-containing species demonstrate that the presence of the latter, either at the surface or below the surface, leads to a four-fold increase in the NO 2 adsorption energies, hence accounting for the significant enhancement in the sensing performance observed experimentally. This underscores the importance of tailoring the structure and chemical properties of GO/rGO materials for optimal performance in gas sensing applications.

Abstract:Air pollution caused by acid gases (NO2, SO2) or greenhouse gases (CO2) is an urgent environmental problem. Two-dimensional nanomaterials exhibit exciting application potential in air pollution control, among which layered black phosphorus (LBP) has superior performance and is environmentally friendly. However, the current interaction mechanism of LBP with hazardous gases is contradictory to experimental observations, largely impeding development of LBP-based air pollution control nanotechnologies. Here, interaction mechanisms between LBP and hazardous gases are unveiled based on density functional theory and experiments. Results show that NO2 is different from other gases, as it can react with unsaturated defects of LBP, resulting in oxidation of LBP and reduction of NO2. Computational results indicate that the redox is initiated by p orbital hybridization between one oxygen atom of NO2 and the phosphorus atom carrying a dangling single electron in a defect’s center. For NO, the interaction mechanism is chemisorption on unsaturated LBP defects, whereas for SO2, NH3, CO2 or CO, the interaction is dominated by van der Waals forces (57–82% of the total interaction). Experiments confirmed that NO2 can oxidize LBP, yet other gases such as CO2 cannot. This study provides mechanistic understanding in advance for developing novel nanotechnologies for selectively monitoring or treating gas pollutants containing NO2.

Abstract:The multicomponent single-stranded DNA plant nanoviruses encode unique master replication initiator (Rep) proteins. We have mapped the 5' and 3' termini of the corresponding polyadenylated mRNAs from faba bean necrotic yellows virus (FBNYV) and subterranean clover stunt virus and found that these are terminally redundant by up to about 160 nt. Moreover, the origin of viral DNA replication is transcribed into RNA that is capable of folding into extended secondary structures. Other nanovirus genome components, such as the FBNYV DNA encoding the protein Clink or an FBNYV DNA encoding a non-essential para-Rep protein, are not transcribed in such a unique fashion. Thus, terminally redundant mRNAs and the resulting transcription of the replication origin appear to be restricted to nanovirus master Rep DNAs. We speculate that this may be a way to regulate the expression of the essential master Rep protein.

Abstract:Effective detecting toxic gases and the clean energy hydrogen is urgently necessary in industrial production and our daily life. Here, the sensing properties of Au-adsorbed/doped black phosphorene monolayer towards six different gases (CO, H 2 , H 2 S, NO, NO 2 , and SO 2 ) are theoretically investigated through density functional theory in combination with the non-equilibrium Green's function approach. The calculated adsorption energy, the charge transfer, the electron localization function, the band structure, and the density of states reveal that the Au-adsorbed/doped black phosphorene exhibits sensitive chemisorption to NO x gases, and, surprisingly, the Au-doped black phosphorene exhibits sensitive physisorption towards H 2 molecules. The calculated recovery time and current–voltage curves show that the Au-adsorbed/doped black phosphorene device acts as an ultra-sensitive (71%–100% sensitivity) remover of NO x molecules, and, importantly, the Au-doped black phosphorene sensor achieves a highly sensitive (85% sensitivity), selective, and reusable (0.01 ns recovery time) detection of H 2 at room temperature. Our results provide a theoretical basis for the potential applications of the Au-adsorbed/doped black phosphorene in gas-sensing, especially in the desirable NO x remover and H 2 sensor.
