Abstract:This paper describes the Holocaust in modern research. The principal works in the contextof heritage trauma were penned by Barbara Engelking (Holocaust and Memory: The Experience of the Holocaust and Its Consequences: An Investigation Based on Personal Narratives) and Marianne Hirsh (Żałoba i postpamięć [Mourning and Postmemory]). Their analyses show how different were the attitudes taken by people who survived the Holocaust. I have completed my work with other research, focusing on the literature discussing psychological and political aspects. The aim was to show the diversity of the effects produced by the Holocaust and its unfading resonance in various areas of life.

Abstract:The author of the paper explores the development of the concept of Polish post-war library science as an academic discipline and demonstrates the wealth of achievement in librarianship studies. Theoretical reflections on and the ongoing discussion about the scope of library science provide a background for the presentation of practical solutions applied in the work of libraries. The author presents library science concepts and the authors of important publications contributing to the development of the discipline, practical librarian tasks and the academic training of librarians. In addition, she analyses librarianship achievements with regard to the characteristic, statutory tasks and functions of libraries, as well as to typology, showing their significance to librarianship practice in Poland and to the quality of the academic training of librarians. There is also a brief description of the profile of the librarianship curriculum at the leading university-level institutions educating librarians.

Abstract:In 1994, I came to Berkeley and was fortunate to stay there three years, first as a postdoctoral researcher and then as Neyman Visiting Assistant Professor. For me, this period was a unique opportunity to see other aspects and learn many more things about statistics: the Department of Statistics at Berkeley was much bigger and hence broader than my home at ETH Z\"urich and I enjoyed very much that the science was perhaps a bit more speculative. As soon as I settled in the department, I tried to get in touch with the local faculty. Leo Breiman started a reading group on topics in machine learning and I didn't hesitate to participate together with other Ph.D. students. Leo spread a tremendous amount of enthusiasm, telling us about the vast opportunity we now had by taking advantage of computational power. Hearing his views and opinions and listening to his thoughts and ideas has been very exciting, stimulating and entertaining as well. This was my first occasion to get to know Leo. And there was, at least a bit, a vice-versa implication: now, Leo knew my name and who I am. Whenever we saw each other on the 4th floor in Evans Hall, I got a very gentle smile and "hello" from Leo. And in fact, this happened quite often: I often walked around while thinking about a problem, and it seemed to me, that Leo had a similar habit.

Abstract:This article deals with the question of how personal memories of the national socialist past in Germany are passed on to younger generations. Rather than viewing this process as an unidirectional handing down of memories from generation to generation, examination is made of how memories are negotiated and re-created in intergenerational discourse. Drawing on a series of case studies, there is discussion of how the meaning of past experiences is construed and organized within particular narrative genres. In order to understand the ways memories are recomposed in the course of social transmission, the analysis highlights the role of group concerns. Against this backdrop, Bartlett’s observations on the repeated reproduction of narratives and Halbwachs’ ideas on the collective memory of the family are presented and discussed as early versions of a sociocultural approach in psychology.

Abstract:Leo Kadanoff has worked in many fields of statistical mechanics. His contributions had an enormous impact. This holds in particular for critical phenomena, where he explained Widom's homogeneity laws by means of block-spin transformations and laid the basis for Wilson's renormalization group equation. I had the pleasure to work in his group for one year. A short historically account is given.

Abstract:The paper describes the author’s experience of studying and working in the studio of Professor Kramer at the ETH-Z.Under Professor Kramer’s supervision, the author gained a deeper understanding of Dutch Structuralism, which was prevalent in the field of architecture in the 1960s, and a clearer understanding of Professor Kramer’s architectural thinking. The author applied structuralist theory to the design and practice of projects in aid of Africa, and subsequently completed a doctoral thesis on the perceived villages transformation in southern Jiangsu Province of China. Finally, the structuralist thinking eventually led the author to the field of morphological research.

Abstract:Memory is not only a biological capability but also a social practice of constructing the past, which is carried out by social communities (e.g., the nation state, the family, and the church). Since the 1980s, memory studies has intertwined the concept of cultural memory with national narratives of the past that are to legitimize the connection between state, territory, and people. In the present time of growing migratory movements, memory studies has abandoned this “methodological nationalism” and turned its attention towards dynamic constructions of cultural memory. Indeed, memories cross national and cultural borderlines in various ways. The cultural memory of the Jewish people, ever since its beginning, has been defined by mobility. As the exile and forty years of wandering in the wilderness preceded the Conquest of Canaan and the building of the temple, the cultural memory of the Jewish people has always been based on the principle of extraterritoriality. The caesura of the Holocaust altered this ancient form of mobility into a superimposed rediasporization of the assimilated Jews that turned the eternal longing for Jerusalem into a secularized longing for the fatherland. This article presents examples of German-Jewish literature that is concerned with the intersection between the original diaspora memory, rediasporization and longing for a return to the fatherland. I will analyze literary writings by Barbara Honigmann and Vladimir Verlib that in a paradigmatic manner navigate between memory of the Holocaust, exile and the mythological past of Judaism, and negotiate the question of belonging to diverse territorial and mobile mnemonic communities.

Abstract:The research is based on the hypothesis that geographical spaces reflect the imprint of social, political, historical and cultural life. Spatial representations of settlements are the projections of social crisis and historical periods. The city has its own vocabulary and language, reflected in its buildings and spaces. These 'speaking' cities are open in space and time, and become theatres of self-writing, as the spaces of the city try to find forms of expression to see unspoken traumas, that is, theories of the city are also theories of the subject. The main question of the investigation is: what are the specific possibilities and challenges for Polish contemporary women's literature to mobilise social memory and to create possibilities for confronting the traumatic past? Using examples from Olga Tokarczuk's novels Dom dzienny, dom nocny (Day House, Night House) and Joanna Bator's Piaskowa Góra (Sand Hill), I will present the relationship between memory and coming to terms with the past in the historical context of East-Central Europe in Poland. In particular, I will focus on the ways of reflecting on historical events of the Second World War and the regime change of 1989. A further aim of the research is to explore how Polish women's literature after 1989 attempts to come to terms with the great social traumas of the twentieth century. In the following, I intend to examine the fictional representation of the culture of memory of the 1989/90 regime change in the body of contemporary Hungarian and Polish women's literature in order to find a common intersection of Central and Eastern European literatures.

During this period, I have also visited many research laboratories in Germany, including Bayreuth, Berlin, Frankfürt, Giessen, Hamburg, Karlsruhe, Kiel, Mainz, Marbach, Munich, Potsdam, and Stuttgart. The objective of this paper is to relate this history.

Abstract:The Landau-Nordita conference that was held in Moscow in 1981 was the first place where I met Lars. This "marvellous meeting", as Lars quoted in one of his reminiscence article, was organised by Alan Luther. It was an event that generated a long-lasting friendship of scientists from East and West, provided a background for the future collaborations and, in particular, my own collaboration with Lars on a supersymmetric high-spin extension of the Poincaré group.

Abstract:This paper discusses the historical context of collaborative research and authorship disputes, exemplified by the complex relationship between Dutch anatomist and physician Gerard L. Blaes and his East-Central European mentee, Daniel Gödtke, during the study of medulla spinalis. The study employs historical analysis to unravel the dynamics of scholarly collaboration, emphasizing the significance of mentorship in scientific progress and the communal nature of knowledge exchange. This historical analysis is based on primary sources and historical records. It underscores Blaes's strategy to circumvent public confrontations regarding the authorship of the seminal work 'Anatome medullae spinalis, et nervorum inde provenientium' (1666). As a teacher, he facilitated his student's participation in a public disputation to avert public authorship conflicts over the book. This ultimately led to the publication of two distinct versions of 'Anatome medullae spinalis.' The first one was co-authored by the mentor and his mentee, while the latter was solely attributed to the mentor. This historical narrative raises essential questions about attributing individual contributions in medical sciences, echoing concerns still pertinent in contemporary academia. Additionally, it makes visible the power dynamics inherent in faculty-students relationships and the potential repercussions of authorship disputes on scholars' reputations. By drawing parallels between historical and modern authorship dilemmas, this study contributes to ongoing discussions on equitable authorship in scientific research and publishing. It not only highlights a historical precedent for the complex dynamics of mentor-mentee collaborations and authorship disputes but also illuminates how these practices continue to influence contemporary academic and publishing customs.

Abstract:The problem with remembering Auschwitz is that the neoliberal paradigm of economic utility, demotic happiness, and programmed consumption has tended to erase its facticity from public consciousness. Technoscientific capitalism functions as a regime of amnesic performance that prevents a ‘working through’ of the Nazi genocide. I argue that Agamben’s work on the implicit violence of the biopolitical paradigm gives a crucial insight into the fate of humanity in the time of global capitalism. However, I contend that the idea of testimony he presents in Remnants of Auschwitz recapitulates a Heideggerian ontology of experience that is enacted outside of the technological dynamics of trauma and memory. I employ Stiegler’s concept of epiphylogenetic memory, first, to explore the economy of fascisms that has emerged within the networks of global capitalism (hyper-nationalisms, religious fundamentalisms, technological transhumanisms) and, second, to examine the material affects through which Auschwitz returns to the scene of this economy.
Looking Beyond the Warp and Weft: Unpicking Latent Narratives in Clothing

Abstract:This article presents my on-going practice in which I explore and reveal perceived memory and experience that is imbued in worn clothing, specifically through my recent work Łódź Blouse Trilogy. In this work, I undertook a series of interventions on blouses in order to reveal dormant and latent matter—details from a single photographic image of a tea party in Poland’s Łódź ghetto. Łódź Blouse Trilogy and related work addresses the use of textiles, cloth, and clothing as a rich landscape to explore and communicate complex ideas within a fine art context. I also seek to present knowledge and provoke thinking on a series of levels, from craft skills to contemporary scientific and psychological thinking. We are intimately familiar with the physicality and materiality of clothing. Thus, this work offers a “safe” fluid entry point to discuss and stimulate thinking around inherited memory, biological and metaphorical transference, personal recall and repression, our sense of self and the ability of cloth and clothes to hold and translate human experience. Fascinated with the creative implications of what is left behind in the clothes we wear, and supported by my experience of working with Alison Fendly at the Forensic Science Service, I have sought to make visible a personal response. The use of garment construction/deconstruction, digital embroidery and dye-sublimation printing have made this work manifest.
Conversations about Mother: Mnemonic Strategies for Narrating Survival in (Post-) War Germany

Abstract:This article explores the strong correlations between mnemonic strategies and mnemonic triggers within family narratives. Families form narrative collectives with their own codes of narrative evocation. One sentence, even only one word, might open up a bundle of memories shared by all immediate kin. Such sharing can, however, be practised and interpreted differently by each family member; stories are also utilised strategically to bond with one family member and sideline another. Given the specific German context of this analysis, its stories and mnemonic devices demonstrate strategies of collective and individual dissociation and victimisation. They also lead us to better understand how very normal, average Germans might have tried to live a decent life with Christian and left-leaning political values, while having no techniques, post 1945, for articulating or reflecting on either trauma or National Socialism and their lasting impact on their nation. As with most other families, the war and post-war period was dominated by memories of struggle and collective grief. Survival narratives use emplotments that can be traced through generations of grandparents, parents, and grandchildren. Exploring such transgenerational conversations enables us to widen the perspective from transgenerational trauma towards a framework of compassion and narrative agency.

Abstract:The development of the brain sciences (Hirnforschung) in the Max Planck Society (MPG) during the early decades of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) was influenced by the legacy of its precursor institution, the Kaiser Wilhelm Society for the Advancement of Science (KWG). The KWG's brain science institutes, along with their intramural psychiatry and neurology research programs, were of considerable interest to the Western Allies and former administrators of the German science and education systems in their plans to rebuild the extra-university research society-first in the British Occupation Zone and later in the American and French Occupation Zones. This formation process occurred under the physicist Max Planck (1858-1947) as acting president, and the MPG was named in his honor when it was formally established in 1948. In comparison to other international developments in the brain sciences, it was neuropathology as well as neurohistology that initially dominated postwar brain research activities in West Germany. In regard to its KWG past, at least four historical factors can be identified that explain the dislocated structural and social features of the MPG during the postwar period: first, the disruption of previously existing interactions between German brain scientists and international colleagues; second, the German educational structures that countered interdisciplinary developments through their structural focus on medical research disciplines during the postwar period; third, the moral misconduct of earlier KWG scientists and scholars during the National Socialism period; and, fourth, the deep rupture that appeared through the forced migration of many Jewish and oppositional neuroscientists who sought to find exile after 1933 in countries where they had already held active collaborations since the 1910s and 1920s. This article examines several trends in the MPG's disrupted relational processes as it sought to grapple with its broken past, beginning with the period of reinauguration of relevant Max Planck Institutes in brain science and culminating with the establishment of the Presidential Research Program on the History of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society in National Socialism in 1997.

Abstract:One can safely say that the pioneering work of Dr. Ulrich Kogelschatz and his team on the physics and chemistry of the dielectric barrier discharge was foundational and remain of great relevance to the present day. Kogelschatz and his team made some of the early high-resolution measurements of the current pulses associated with filaments and conducted simulations to elucidate the chemical processes taking place in DBD plasmas. On the engineering/technology side, he contributed to the development of DBD-based excimer lamps, to the optimization of DBD-based ozone generators and to many other advancements. His numerous papers on the physics and applications of DBD have educated a generation of researchers involved with such devices. I consider myself one of those students who learned a lot from him, both from his writings and from personal interaction. In this perspective, I first briefly summarize the working of barrier discharges and some of Kogelschatz's contributions to this field. Then, I highlight some of the most valuable interactions I had the privilege to have with him, who I considered to be a mentor and a dear friend for many years. Please note that I use the formal title "Dr. Kogelschatz" in the title and sub-titles but in the text, I use Ulrich (or Uli) as that is how I addressed him in person.
