Abstract:Fiber-optic network infrastructures are crucial for the transmission of data over long and short distances. Fiber optics are also preferred for the infrastructure of in-building data communications. In this study, we use polarization analysis to ensure the security of the optical fiber/cables of the physical layer. This method exploits the changes induced by mechanical vibrations to polarization states, which can be easily detected using a polarization beam splitter and a balancing photodetector. We use machine learning to classify selected events that violate the safety of the physical layer, such as manipulation or temporary disconnection of connectors. The results show the resting state can be accurately distinguished from selected security breaches for a fiber route subjected to environmental disturbances, where individual events can be classified with nearly 99% accuracy.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) band communications are envisioned as a key technology for 6G and beyond.For wireless communication security in THz band, physical-layer security (PLS) has recently received growing interest.This paper aims to provide a comprehensive survey of the PLS techniques in THz communication systems.The investigation consists of three hierarchical parts.Firstly, we introduce the emerging security threats arising from the THz physical-layer and compare them with the traditional security threats.Then, three newly-proposed PLS solutions in THz band are highlighted, which match the features of THz link well and are expected to be applied in the near future, including photonics-based frequency hopping (FH), intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) secure beamforming and security signal processing.At last, we discuss their challenges and propose different interesting areas that can be opted as future research directions.

Abstract:As one of the promising solutions for conveying high-bandwidth and low-latency services such as 5G, optical access networks face severe security challenges due to their tree-based topology and broadcast characteristics in downstream transmission. Even though physical-layer security mechanisms leverage the advantages of flexible implementation, low complexity, and full information confidentiality, these security enhancement schemes based on digital signal processing techniques are limited by the electrical bottleneck, leading to low processing speed for encryption and incapability of effectively detecting network attacks. In this article, we first discuss the potential security threats and present several existing solutions against security threats in optical access networks from the perspective of the medium access control and physical layers. We then elaborate novel optical-layer solutions based on optical signal processing techniques including all-optical encryption, optical layer authentication, and optical domain intrusion detection mechanisms. In particular, numerical simulation results have verified the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed solutions. Finally, we conclude this article and propose future challenges of security enhancement of optical access networks supporting 5G and beyond.

Abstract:With the wide application of large-capacity and high-speed optical networks, its security has become a current research focus. Due to the limitations of traditional key distribution and encryption schemes, this paper proposes an innovative key distribution and encryption control scheme based on physical layer channel feature extraction and analysis. First of all, the transceiver terminal extracts the physical characteristics of the fiber channel separately, and generates a consensus key through quantization coding. Second, use the generated key base to encrypt the transmission sequence, map the Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) signal to the high-order 1024×1024-QAM signal, and use the noise stream to perform the high-order QAM. The signal is flooded. The system utilizes channel non-replication and randomness of channel noise, the security and randomness of the key are good, and the key formation rate is high and the key generation equipment is simple. The system uses high-order QAM modulation, which increases the security of the system. The experimental results show that the coding rate of the key generated by the system reaches 400kb/s, and the coding performance of the key is better; the operating key is generated by the key base extension, which has strong anti-interception ability; the system has a low bit error rate and secure transmission Good performance.

Abstract:We have shown the opportunity to use the unique inhomogeneities of the internal structure of an optical fiber waveguide for remote authentication of users or an optic fiber line. Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (OTDR) is demonstrated to be applicable to observing unclonable backscattered signal patterns at distances of tens of kilometers. The physical nature of the detected patterns was explained, and their characteristic spatial periods were investigated. The patterns are due to the refractive index fluctuations of a standard telecommunication fiber. We have experimentally verified that the patterns are an example of a Physically Unclonable Function (PUF). The uniqueness and reproducibility of the patterns have been demonstrated and an authentication protocol has been provided.

Abstract:With the demand for economical and high-speed wireless services, Optical Wireless Communication (OWC) has attracted increasing attention in both research and the market. In the past decades, numerous optical-related techniques (e.g., LEDs, displays, cameras) and systems (e.g., VLC, LiFi, LiDAR) have been invented. OWC techniques, which are considered as a competitive mechanics in next-generation networks as an alternative to RF approaches, offer 10,000 times more bandwidth than conventional radio frequency (RF)-based wireless techniques (e.g., WiFi, LoRa, Bluetooth, LTE), as well as tremendous spatial reuse potential with even less interference. Because optical communications have a limited wavelength and travel in the line of sight (LoS) manner, the OWC is commonly thought as a secure wireless approach to confine light transmissions within physical bounds. However, in the real world, it is completely untrue. The privacy leakages and security risks broadly exist in the optical-related wireless applications including OWC networks. These threats and weaknesses have recently been the subject of several initial studies. However, they lack systematic analysis and are isolated. This survey first presents a general workflow of OWC systems which consists of three stages: before signal emission (BSE), during signal propagation (DSP), and after signal receiving (ASV). For each stage, related risks are reviewed. Then, we summarize existing attacks in optical-related wireless applications and corresponding counter-attack solutions. Finally, we outline the future trends for improving OWC security.

A Tampering Risk of Fiber-Based Frequency Synchronization Networks and Its Countermeasures

Abstract:Fiber optic networks are used worldwide and have been regarded as excellent media for transmitting time-frequency (TF) signals. In the past decades, fiber-based TF synchronization techniques have been extensively studied. Instruments based on these techniques have been successfully applied. With the increasing application of TF synchronization instruments, their security has become an important issue. Unfortunately, the security risks of fiber-based frequency synchronization (FbFS) instruments have been overlooked. This paper proposes a frequency tampering method called "frequency lens". On a 200 km fiber link, we demonstrate a frequency tampering scenario using a frequency lens-enabled frequency tampering module (FTM). On the user side, the frequency value of the recovered 100 MHz signal can be stealthily altered within a range of 100 MHz-100 Hz to 100 MHz+100 Hz, while the frequency dissemination stability of the system remains normal. Related to this tampering risk, potential hazards in three different application scenarios, which rely on precise frequency references, are analyzed. Two countermeasures are also proposed to solve this tampering risk.

The feasibility of launching physical layer attacks in visible light communication networks

Abstract:One of the areas in which wireless networks based on visible light communication (VLC) are considered superior to traditional radio-based communication is security. The common slogan summarizing VLC security features is: WYSIWYS - "What You See Is What You Send". However, especially in the case of infrastructure downlink communication, security with respect to data snooping, jamming and modification must be carefully provided for. This paper examines the physical layer aspects of VLC networks with respect to possible disruptions caused by rogue transmitters. We present the theoretical system model that we use in simulations to evaluate various rogue transmission scenarios in a typical office environment. We use estimated Bit Error Rate (BER) as a measure of the effectiveness of jamming and rogue data transmission. We find that it is quite easy to disrupt, and in some cases to even hijack legitimate transmission.

Abstract:The issues of development of a distributed fiber-optic security system for restricted access objects and other objects of state significance from unauthorized access are considered. The analysis of existing systems developed by foreign scientists is given. A scheme of a passive perimeter security system is proposed for consideration, in which an optical fiber is used as the main element. The principle of operation of a distributed type fiber-optic security system is based on a method for controlling the amount of additional losses during mechanical action on an optical fiber. A laboratory stand was constructed for conducting field experiments and testing the design of the security system. The obtained research results make it possible to further create fiber-optic security systems of a distributed type with a lower cost compared to foreign analogues due to a fundamentally new method of data processing and the use of multimode optical fibers. This will also increase the length of the fiber-optic security system and increase their reliability. The proposed distributed fiber-optic security system uses a completely different principle associated with pixel analysis of the change in the light spot.

Abstract:With the development of optical transmission technology, optical fiber networks have become critical infrastructures in supporting information transmission on the Internet. However, the fiber cable is very vulnerable to large-scale damage such as earthquakes or pulse bombs. What is more serious is that it will take a long time to locate and repair the damages on fiber links. The long-term repair process will cause continuous network performance degradation and severe economic loss. The fact is that these dangerous areas may be ignored by traditional vulnerability analysis models. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a method to analyze the vulnerability of fiber networks based on network recoverability. We first improve the traditional fiber network simulation methods and damage simulation methods to provide a compatible foundation for the network recoverability simulation. Then, we present the network vulnerability analysis model: the Damage Measurement and Location Model (DMLM). The model employs the heuristic traversal algorithm based on random points to locate the candidate attack positions. We design three vulnerability metrics: two metrics are related to network recoverability and one metric is used for comparison. We also build their corresponding theoretical frameworks to determine the appropriate model parameters to satisfy the specified estimation error requirements. Numerical results prove the proposed model’s effectiveness and excellent sensitivity for essential parameters. The visual results of the vulnerable zones prove the necessity of considering network recoverability in vulnerability analysis of optical fiber networks.

Abstract:The physical layer of optical access network is vulnerable to various attacks. As the dramatic increase of users and network capacity, the issue of physical-layer security becomes more and more important. This paper proposes a physical-enhanced secure strategy for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing passive optical network (OFDM-PON) by employing frequency domain chaos scrambling. The Logistic map is adopted for the chaos mapping. The chaos scrambling strategy can dynamically allocate the scrambling matrices for different OFDM frames according to the initial condition, which enhance the confidentiality of the physical layer. A mathematical model of this secure system is derived firstly, which achieves a secure transmission at physical layer in OFDM-PON. The results from experimental implementation using Logistic mapped chaos scrambling are also given to further demonstrate the efficiency of this secure strategy. An 10.125 Gb/s 64QAM-OFDM data with Logistic mapped chaos scrambling are successfully transmitted over 25-km single mode fiber (SMF), and the experimental results show that proposed security scheme can protect the system from eavesdropper and attacker, while keep a good performance for the legal ONU. Abstract:Due to the dramatic increase in high data rate services and in order to meet the demands of the fifth-generation (5G) networks, researchers from both academia and industry are exploring advanced transmission techniques, new network architectures and new frequency spectrum such as the visible light spectra. Visible light communication (VLC) particularly is an emerging technology that has been introduced as a promising solution for 5G and beyond. Although VLC systems are more immune against interference and less susceptible to security vulnerabilities since light does not penetrate through walls, security issues arise naturally in VLC channels due to their open and broadcasting nature, compared to fiber-optic systems. In addition, since VLC is considered to be an enabling technology for 5G, and security is one of the 5G fundamental requirements, security issues should be carefully addressed and resolved in the VLC context. On the other hand, due to the success of physical layer security (PLS) in improving the security of radio-frequency (RF) wireless networks, extending such PLS techniques to VLC systems has been of great interest. Only two survey papers on security in VLC have been published in the literature. However, a comparative and unified survey on PLS for VLC from information theoretic and signal processing point of views is still missing. This paper covers almost all aspects of PLS for VLC, including different channel models, input distributions, network configurations, precoding/signaling strategies, and secrecy capacity and information rates. Furthermore, we propose a number of timely and open research directions for PLS-VLC systems, including the application of measurement-based indoor and outdoor channel models, incorporating user mobility and device orientation into the channel model, and combining VLC and RF systems to realize the potential of such technologies.

Abstract:Free-space optical (FSO) communication systems are a promising technology for future smart cities due to their cost-effective installation, high data throughput, extensive reach, and minimal latency. However, these systems are vulnerable to potential intrusions, particularly jamming. The limited wavelengths of FSO systems, typically around 1300 nm or 1550 nm, make them accessible to potential adversaries. The wide field-of-view (FoV) of FSO receivers is important for dealing with changing weather conditions. However, jammers can use this to their advantage, lowering security or stopping FSO links from working. Even in terrestrial applications, FSO transceivers, often situated at significant heights, are vulnerable to jamming. A jammer can transmit disruptive optical pulses to the FSO receiver, making it difficult to distinguish between legitimate signals and jammed interference, posing a significant risk to communication integrity. Addressing jamming in FSO communication systems is crucial, especially in scenarios demanding secure and reliable communication, such as military applications. Understanding jamming and developing effective countermeasures is essential to ensuring the security and reliability of future communication networks as FSO technology continues to evolve.

Abstract:We investigate and experimentally demonstrate the impact of continuous wave (CW) injection from a malicious ONU on the upstream transmission in a power splitting-based PON. Both OOK signal as used in a TDM-PON and OFDM signal in an OFDM-PON are considered. In our experiment, 10-Gb/s NRZ-PRBS and OFDM signals were used to test the effect of CW injection in TDM-PON and OFDM-PON, respectively. A bit error rate floor is observed for the upstream OOK signal when the signal-to-crosstalk ratio is reduced to 7.7 dB. Similarly, the CW injection from a malicious ONU also impose severe power penalty to the upstream OFDM signal. To overcome this security issue, we propose a novel protection scheme via harvesting the optical energy at the remote node (RN) that is originally wasted in a common power splitting-based PON. The proposed protection scheme can maintain the passive nature of the RN.

Abstract:In the modern scenario, optical fiber communication technology has rapidly progressed with continuous exploration of emerging technologies to support more amount of bandwidth, higher data rate and improved security along with reduction in losses and electromagnetic immunity. Optical fiber communication system has remarkably low loss and is reliably capable of meeting the demand of massively increased information traffic employing a minimum number of repeaters in its performance link. In this paper, we discuss broadly optical fiber technology theory, types, working principle with its various merits and demerits in the application scenario. Single-mode graded index fiber has been analyzed in comparison to multi-mode fibers and it has emerged as the most efficient means of broad band signal transmission offering many distinct advantages. The possible consequences of both linear and nonlinear effects of the optical fiber and other limiting factors that influence the performance of propagation characteristics have been discussed which are reasonably relevant to the emerging areas of optical engineering ,photonics and related fiber optic devices.

Abstract:Industrial Ethernet is a technology widely spread in factory floors and critical infrastructures where a high amount of data need to be collected and transported. Fiber optic networks at gigabit rates fit well with that type of environments where speed, system performance and reliability are critical. In this work a new encryption method for high speed optical communications suitable for such kind of networks is proposed. This new encryption method consists of a symmetric streaming encryption of the 8b/10b data flow at PCS (Physical Coding Sublayer) level. It is carried out thanks to an FPE (Format Preserving Encryption) blockcipher working in CTR (Counter) mode. The overall system has been simulated and implemented in an FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array). Thanks to experimental results it can be concluded that it is possible to cipher traffic at this physical level in a secure way. In addition, no overhead is introduced during encryption, getting minimum latency and maximum throughput.

Abstract:Physical layer security is a promising approach that can benefit traditional encryption methods. The idea of physical layer security is to take advantage of the features of the propagation medium and its impairments to ensure secure communication in the physical layer. This work introduces a comprehensive review of the main information-theoretic metrics used to measure the secrecy performance in physical layer security. Furthermore, a theoretical framework related to the most commonly used physical layer security techniques to improve the secrecy performance is provided. Finally, our work surveys physical layer security research over several enabling 5G technologies, such as massive multiple-input multiple-output, millimeter-wave communications, heterogeneous networks, non-orthogonal multiple access, and full-duplex. Also, we include the key concepts of each of the aforementioned technologies. Future fields of research and technical challenges of physical layer security are also identified.

Abstract:Since the characteristics of wireless channel are open and broadcasting, wireless networks are very vulnerable to be attacked via eavesdropping, jamming, and interference. As traditional secure technologies are not suitable for PHY layer of wireless networks, physical-layer security issues become a focus of attention. In this paper, we firstly identify and summarize the threats and vulnerabilities in PHY layer of wireless networks. Then, we give a holistic overview of PHY layer secure schemes, which are divided into three categories: spatial domain-based, time domain-based, and frequency domain-based. Along the way, we analyze the pros and cons of current secure technologies in each category. In addition, we also conclude the techniques and methods used in these categories and point out the open research issues and directions in this area.
