Abstract:Abstract Due to the problems of the hydrolysis of wasted activated sludge (WAS), fermentation stage takes a long time and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) output efficiency is low. This study investigated the effect of ultrasound combined with Fenton (US/Fenton) pretreatment on the sludge disintegration and anaerobic fermentation. The sludge was treated by three different pretreatments respectively: ultrasound alone, Fenton alone and US/Fenton. Results show that after three pretreatments, sludge floc structure was disintegrated and oxidized, the sludge particle morphology after US/Fenton pretreatment was changed the most obviously. After US/Fenton, specific surface area was the largest and the particle size reduction was remarkable from 50.24 μm to22.44 μm. The SCOD concentration after US/Fenton was 3461.72 mg COD L-1, which was raised 1.73 times, 2.68 times and13.29 times as against that after ultrasound, Fenton and the untreated. The degree of disintegration (DDCOD) of the US/Fenton pretreatment was 15.4% which was greater than ultrasound pretreatment of 9.97% and Fenton pretreatment of 3.18%. The VFAs concentration after US/Fenton pretreatment reached a maximum value of 4594 mg COD L-1 at the eighth day, it was raised 31.8% and 70.15% as separately compared with the Fenton and ultrasound pretreatments. The pretreatments changed the VFAs composition and proportion. The highest HAC concentration after US/Fenton was 2039 mg COD L-1, which was 1.72 and 1.78 times of that in Fenton and ultrasound, respectively. This study showed that the US/Fenton pretreatment had a certain synergistic promotion effect on the sludge anaerobic fermentation. The ultrasound and Fenton co-work, the ability of the VFAs production is further improved.

Abstract:Humic acids (HAs) are characterized as recalcitrant compounds in landfill leachate. In the present study, considering the HA removal as well as some traditional indexes such as chemical oxygen demand (CODCr), color and turbidity removals from landfill leachate, the performance of coagulation–flocculation (CF) process using iron-based coagulants was optimized by response surface methodology (RSM). The results achieved using polyferric sulfate (PFS) were compared with those using conventional coagulants such as ferric chloride 6-hydrate (FeCl3·6H2O), ferric sulfate 7-hydrate (Fe2(SO4)3·7H2O). The quadratic models developed for responses indicated the optimum conditions were PFS dose of 8g/L at pH 6.0, FeCl3·6H2O dose of 10g/L at pH 8.0 and Fe2(SO4)3·7H2O dose of 12g/L at pH 7.5. Compromising to simultaneously optimize, the optimum conditions resulted in the CODCr, color, turbidity and HA removal of 56.38%, 63.38%, 89.79%, 70.41% for PFS whereas 68.65%, 93.31%, 98.85%, 80.18% for FeCl3·6H2O and 55.87%, 74.65%, 94.13%, 53.64% for Fe2(SO4)3·7H2O, respectively. The results of confirmatory experiments agreed well with the model predictions, which demonstrated that RSM can achieve good predictions with the least number of required experiments. Meanwhile, the relatively appreciable removals of HA and CODCr indicated that CF process as a pretreatment could remove recalcitrant compounds in leachate effectively.
Enhancement of waste-activated sludge dewaterability using combined Fenton pre-oxidation and flocculation process

Abstract:A combination of Fenton pre-oxidation and flocculation process was utilized to enhance the dewaterability of waste-activated sludge. The dry solid content of dewatered sludge (DS) cake, supernatant turbidity, sludge specific resistance to filtration (SRF), supernatant of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD), polysaccharides, and proteins concentration were examined to evaluate the sludge dewatering performance and describe the mechanism involved in sludge treatment. The optimal conditions were as follows: 40 mg.g(-1) DS H2O2; 50 mg.g(-1) DS Fe2+; pH 3; Fenton reaction time, 90 min; and 60 mg.L-1 cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM). Under these conditions, the optimal SRF and DS achieved were 1.21 x 10(9) m.kg(-1) and 34.20%, respectively. The extracellular polymeric substance structure was destroyed by Fenton oxidation. Consequently, polysaccharide and protein were released into the supernatant, and the SCOD was increased. Morphological property analysis revealed an evident compact sludge floc after the combined Fenton pre-oxidation and flocculation process. The sludge particle treated with the combined processes became larger than that treated with Fenton oxidation alone. The sludge flocs were formed with the addition of CPAM during flocculation due to its excellent charge neutralization and bridging ability. The present results showed that the combination of Fenton pre-oxidation and flocculation is effective in conditioning waste-activated sludge and consequently enhancing sludge dewaterability.
Synergistic effects of peracetic acid and free ammonia pretreatment on anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge to promote short-chain fatty acid production for polyhydroxyalkanoate biosynthesis: Mechanisms and optimization

Abstract:Peracetic acid (PAA) combined with free ammonia (FA) pretreatment can be utilized to promote anaerobic fermentation (AF) of waste activated sludge (WAS) to produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and the resulting SCFAs are desirable carbon sources (C-sources) for polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biosynthesis. This work aimed to determine the optimum conditions for PAA + FA pretreatment of sludge AF and the feasibility of using anaerobic fermentation liquor (AFL) for PHA production. To reveal the mechanisms of integrated pretreatment, the impacts of PAA + FA pretreatment on different stages of sludge AF and changes in the microbial community structure were explored. The experimental results showed that the maximum SCFA yield reached 491.35 ± 6.02 mg COD/g VSS on day 5 after pretreatment with 0.1 g PAA/g VSS +70 mg FA/L, which was significantly greater than that resulting from PAA or FA pretreatment alone. The mechanism analysis showed that PAA + FA pretreatment promoted sludge solubilization but strongly inhibited methanogenesis. According to the analysis of the microbial community, PAA + FA pretreatment changed the microbial community structure and promoted the enrichment of bacteria related to hydrolysis and acidification, and Proteiniclasticum, Macellibacteroides and Petrimonas became the dominant hydrolytic and acidifying bacteria. Finally, after alkali treatment, the AFL was utilized for batch-mode PHA production, and a maximum PHA yield of 55.05 wt% was achieved after five operation periods.
Extracellular polymeric substance decomposition linked to hydrogen recovery from waste activated sludge: Role of peracetic acid and free nitrous acid co-pretreatment in a prefermentation-bioelectrolysis cascading system

Abstract:Free nitrous acid (FNA) has been recently reported to be an effective and eco-friendly inactivator for waste activated sludge (WAS), while the limited decomposition of the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) matrix hampers resource recovery from WAS. This work employed peracetic acid (PAA) to assist FNA and explored the contribution of co-pretreatment to hydrogen recovery in a prefermentation-bioelectrolysis cascading system. The results showed that co-pretreatment led to approximately 8.8% and 20.4% increases in the exfoliation of particulate proteins and carbohydrates, respectively, from tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS) over that of sole FNA pretreatment. Electron paramagnetic resonance analysis verified that the synergistic effect of FNA, PAA and various generated free radicals was the essential process. This effect further promoted the accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) after 96 h of prefermentation, and the peak concentration in co-pretreated WAS (AD-FPWAS) was approximately 2.5-fold that in sole FNA-pretreated WAS (AD-FWAS). Subsequently, the cascading utilization of organics in the bioelectrolysis step contributed to efficient hydrogen generation. A total of 10.8 ± 0.3 mg H2/g VSS was harvested in microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) fed with AD-FPWAS, while 6.2 ± 0.1 mg H2/g VSS was obtained from AD-FWAS. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed the effective decomposition of the phospholipid bilayer in the cytomembrane and the transformation of macromolecular organics into VFAs and hydrogen in the cascading system. Further microbial community analysis demonstrated that co-pretreatment enhanced the accumulation of functional consortia, including anaerobic fermentative bacteria (AFB, 28.1%), e.g., Macellibacteroides (6.3%) and Sedimentibacter (6.9%), and electrochemically active bacteria (EAB, 57.0%), e.g., Geobacter (39.0%) and Pseudomonas (13.6%), in the prefermentation and MEC steps, respectively. The possible synergetic and competitive relationships among AFB, EAB, homo-acetogens, nitrate-reducing bacteria and methanogens were explored by molecular ecological network analysis. From an environmental and economic perspective, this promising FNA and PAA co-pretreatment approach provides new insight for energy recovery from WAS biorefineries.
A systematic investigation of peracetic acid oxidation and polymeric coagulants re-flocculation to enhance activated sludge dewatering: Multi-porous skeleton structures

Abstract:In this research, the effects of peracetic acid (PAA), polymeric flocculants, and their combined conditioning on improving the dewatering performance were comprehensively evaluated. The results showed that sludge cake moisture content, capillary suction time (CST), and specific resistance to filtration (SRF) were 70.6%, 48.1 s, and 3.42 × 1012 m/kg after adding 0.10 g/gMLSS PAA for 50 min, representing reductions of 12.60%, 40.32%, and 33.98%, respectively. Additionally, conditioning of sludge with polyferric sulfate (PFS), polyaluminum chloride (PAC), and cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) enhanced sludge properties in the following order: CPAM > PAC > PFS. After the PAA oxidation and re-flocculation process, the optimal dosages of PFS, PAC, and CPAM were reduced to 1.5 g/L, 0.9 g/L, and 0.04 g/L, respectively. The sludge dewatering performance significantly improved, with sludge cake moisture content measuring 65.8%, 66.3%, and 61.7%, respectively. Moreover, the spatial multi-porous skeleton structures were formed via re-flocculation to improve the sludge dewatering. Furthermore, economic evaluation validated that the pre-oxidation and re-flocculation process could be considered an economically viable option. These research findings could serve as a valuable reference for practical engineering applications.
Effects of Potassium Ferrate and Low-Temperature Thermal Hydrolysis Co-Pretreatment on the Hydrolysis and Anaerobic Digestion Process of Waste Activated Sludge

Abstract:This study evaluated the effect of potassium ferrate (PF) and low-temperature thermal hydrolysis co-pretreatment on the promotion of sludge hydrolysis process and the impact on acid production in the subsequent anaerobic digestion process. The analytical investigations showed that co-pretreatment significantly facilitated the hydrolysis process of the sludge and contributed to the accumulation of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). The pretreatment conditions under the optimal leaching of organic matter from sludge were hydrothermal temperature of 75°C, hydrothermal treatment time of 12 h, and PF dosage of 0.25 g g −1 TSS (total suspended solids), according to the results of orthogonal experiments. By pretreatment under proper conditions, the removal rate of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) achieved 71.8% at the end of fermentation and the removal rate of total phosphorus (TP) was 69.1%. The maximum yield of SCFAs was 750.3 mg L −1 , 7.45 times greater than that of the blank group. Based on the analysis of the anaerobic digestion mechanism, it was indicated that the co-pretreatment could destroy the floc structure on the sludge surface and improve organic matter dissolving, resulting in more soluble organic substances for the acidification process. Furthermore, microbial community research revealed that the main cause of enhanced SCFAs generation was an increase in acidogenic bacteria and a reduction of methanogenic bacteria.

Abstract:The recovery of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) through anaerobic fermentation (AF) is usually restricted by the poor biodegradability of waste activated sludge (WAS). This study proposed a novel strategy, i.e. peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activated by Fe-loaded sodium alginate hydrogel beads (Fe-SA), to enhance AF performance. Experimental results demonstrated that the as-synthesized Fe-SA and PMS co-pretreatment synergistically enhanced WAS solubilization and VFAs production. The maximal VFAs yield of 2013 mg COD/L was achieved at the Fe-SA dosage of 4.0 mM/g TSS, which was 93.7% higher than that with sole PMS addition and 8.82 times higher than that of the control. Mechanistic studies elucidated that the generation of reactive radicals such as SO 4 •− and • OH from PMS was greatly induced by Fe-SA, which contributed to WAS disintegration and degradation of refractory compounds. Additionally, analysis of the key enzyme activities indicated that the Fe-SA could strengthen biological hydrolysis and acidogenesis of sludge during AF. Microbial analysis illustrated that Fe-SA evidently improved the abundances of fermentative microorganisms as well as functional gene expression via creating a favorable environment for microbial growth. This study demonstrated the applicable potential of Fe-SA hydrogel beads activating PMS for VFAs production and provides an important reference for developing advanced oxidation processes-based application in AF.

Enhanced hydrolysis of waste activated sludge and recovery of volatile fatty acids: Performance and mechanistic analysis of synergistic treatment with sodium citrate and calcium oxide

Abstract:Anaerobic fermentation has emerged as a promising method of transforming waste activated sludge into high-value products (e.g., volatile fatty acids (VFAs)). This work developed sodium citrate (SC)-calcium oxide (CaO) pretreatment to accelerate the production of VFAs by enhancing sludge solubilization and disintegration of extracellular polymeric substances. The results showed that co-pretreatment with 0.25 g/g TSS of SC and 0.05 g/g TSS of CaO effectively boosted VFAs accumulation (5823.3 mg COD/L), which was 12.2 times higher than the Control group. SC-CaO pretreatment enhanced hydrolysis and acidogenesis by providing ample organic substrates, thereby promoting the growth of hydrolytic and acidogenic bacteria. Additionally, the fermentation broth resulting from co-pretreatment exhibited lower phosphorus concentration and higher biodegradability. Economic analysis confirmed that the combined pretreatment is cost-effective. This work provides a viable strategy for enhancing high-value product recovery from sludge.
A comparison of oxidation and re-flocculation behaviors of Fe2+/PAA and Fe2+/H2O2 treatments for enhancing sludge dewatering: A mechanism study

Abstract:In this study, Fe2+ activated-PAA was developed as a novel technology to enhance sludge dewatering. The result showed that the filterability (CST0/CST) enhanced by 4.20 ± 0.14 times more than the control, and the SRF and bound water content decreased from 4.58 ± 0.07 × 1013 m/kg and 2.11 ± 0.28 g/g dry sludge to 9.47 ± 0.05 × 1012 m/kg and 1.27 ± 0.18 g/g dry sludge, respectively after the sludge was conditioned by 1.20 mM/g VSS Fe2+ and 1.20 mM/g VSS PAA. The dewatering performance, physicochemical properties, aggregation behaviors, and EPS fractions of sludge were compared before and after Fe2+/PAA and Fe2+/H2O2 conditionings. The results showed that Fe2+/PAA treatment was more competitive in enhancing dewaterability under neutral and alkaline conditions than Fe2+/H2O2 treatment but slightly weaker under acid conditions. Besides, it was found that the oxidation and re-flocculation behaviors were different in those two enhanced dewatering technologies due to the difference in the generated ROS. R-O was the primary radical in the Fe2+/PAA system, while OH was the major one in the Fe2+/H2O2 system. The mechanism analysis found that the Fe2+/PAA process caused harsher disintegration of sludge flocs, meaning more generation of fine particles. However, it exhibited less effect on reducing the energy barrier between sludge particles. Therefore, the Fe2+/PAA treated sludge presented weaker aggregation behaviors. The weaker aggregation was unfavorable for sludge dewatering because the weaker aggregated flocs were more easily fragmented, which hampered the consolidation of sludge cakes and removal of bound water. Moreover, loosely-bound extracellular polymeric substances, particularly tightly-bound extracellular polymeric substances, governed the sludge dewaterability.

Abstract:Anaerobic acidogenesis of waste activated sludge (WAS) presents significant potential for resource recovery and waste treatment. However, the slow hydrolysis of WAS limits the efficiency of this approach. In this study, we applied urea hydrogen peroxide (UHP) pretreatment to enhance WAS hydrolysis and investigated the effects of operating parameters on volatile fatty acid (VFA) production and the associated mechanisms. Results demonstrated that UHP significantly improved WAS hydrolysis and VFA production, with a three-fold increase in soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) compared to the control group. UHP dosage emerged as the most critical factor for VFA production, with the maximum VFA concentration increasing from 1127.6 to 8800.9 mg COD per L as UHP dosage ranged from 0 to 6 mmol g −1 VSS (Volatile suspended solids). At an optimal UHP dosage of 4 mmol g −1 VSS, both the unit oxidant promotion efficiency (ΔVFAs/ΔUHP) and the maximum VFA concentration reached relatively high levels, at 35.3 mg COD per mmol and 7527.3 mg COD per L, respectively. UHP pretreatment generated alkaline conditions, H 2 O 2 , ·OH and free ammonia, which collectively disrupted the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) structure, transforming unextractable EPS into extractable forms and promoting the release of organic matter during both the pretreatment and fermentation stages. Excitation-emission matrix (EEM) analysis revealed that UHP increased the concentration of easily utilizable organic matter, providing more substrates for acidogenic bacteria and enhancing VFA production. Furthermore, weak alkaline conditions and high free ammonia concentrations in the UHP group facilitated VFA accumulation by preventing rapid acidification and suppressing methanogen activity. This study offers valuable insights into the potential of UHP pretreatment for enhancing WAS hydrolysis and VFA production, with promising applications in wastewater treatment and resource recovery.

Peracetic acid enhanced anaerobic co-digestion of excess sludge and food waste: performance and mechanism

Abstract:Anaerobic co-digestion of excess sludge (ES) and food waste (FW) has been proven to be a clean and efficient strategy for the resource recovery of organic waste. However, the methane production from the anaerobic co-digestion of ES and FW is not optimal. This study reports a new strategy of using peracetic acid (PAA) pretreatment to enhance the anaerobic co-digestion of ES and FW and reveals the underlying mechanisms. The results confirm that PAA can effectively promote the production of methane from the anaerobic co-digestion of ES and FW, with the maximum methane yield reaching 416 mL/g volatile suspended solids at a PAA content of 9% (w/w). Mechanistic analysis indicates that PAA efficiently facilitates the solubilization of organic matter, promoting the release of soluble proteins and polysaccharides, and accelerating the metabolic conversion of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) to prevent excessive acidification. The maximum output of VFA in the PAA group was 1,511–1,974 mg/L, which was lower than that in the control group. Batch experimental analysis revealed that PAA promoted the hydrolysis and acidification processes, but inhibited the methanogenic process. The PAA pretreatment technique provides a theoretical basis for the efficient treatment of organic matter in urban areas.

Abstract:The asynchronous dosed protease and lysozyme combination pretreatment was proved to be effective in enhancing the anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS). However, humic acid (HA) in the sludge could interact with hydrolase and restrain the hydrolysis efficiency, thus inhibiting short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production. This study investigated the effectiveness and mechanism of enzymatic pretreatment against HA. Results showed that the enzyme cocktail method increased the extracellular bioavailable contents by 34 %, which raised SCFAs production by 89.69 % (1269.65 mg COD /L). The balanced ratio of hydrolysis and fermentation communities suggested that the small molecular organics generated by the hydrolysis community could be sufficiently utilized by fermentation communities. The metabolism of amino acids and glucose was facilitated, and the activities of key enzymes were enhanced. These results clarified the effect of asynchronous enzyme cocktail pretreatment against HA inhibition and contributed to SCFAs production, which offered fresh perspectives on carbon recovery.

Abstract:Peracetic acid (PAA), known for its environmentally friendly properties as a oxidant and bactericide, is gaining prominence in decontamination and disinfection applications. The primary product of PAA oxidation is acetate that can serve as an electron acceptor (EA) for the biosynthesis of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) via chain elongation (CE) reactions. Hence, PAA-based pretreatment is supposed to be beneficial for MCFAs production from anaerobic sludge fermentation, as it could enhance organic matter availability, suppress competing microorganisms and furnish EA by providing acetate. However, such a hypothesis has rarely been proved. Here we reveal that PAA-based pretreatment leads to significant exfoliation of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) from sludge flocs and disruption of proteinic secondary structures, through inducing highly active free radicals and singlet oxygen. The production of MCFAs increases substantially to 11,265.6 mg COD L-1, while the undesired byproducts, specifically long-chain alcohols (LCAs), decrease to 723.5 mg COD L-1. Microbial activity tests further demonstrate that PAA pretreatment stimulates the CE process, attributed to the up-regulation of functional genes involved in fatty acid biosynthesis pathway. These comprehensive findings provide insights into the effectiveness and mechanisms behind enhanced MCFAs production through PAA-based technology, advancing our understanding of sustainable resource recovery from sewage sludge.

Abstract:Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane is a promising technique for deep treatment of organic wastewater. However, the unavoidable membrane contamination greatly restrictions its field of application. Herein, we successfully prepared Fe3O4@PVDF membrane with excellent anti-fouling and catalytic ability by non-solvent induced phase inversion method. Meanwhile, Fe3O4@PVDF membrane was characterized by SEM, XRD, FTIR, Water contact Angle and membrane aperture analyzer. The properties of separation and anti-fouling were also evaluated by cross flow filtration of humic acid (HA). Compare with pristine membrane, the pure water flux, rejection rate and FRR respectively increase from 556.81 L m-2 h−1, 65.42 %, 68.26 % to 656.96 L m-2 h−1, 99.64 %, 90.17 % under in-situ Fenton reaction condition. In addition, further mechanistic insights by XDLVO theory, 3D-EEM and EPR verified that high anti-fouling mainly attribute to excellent hydrophilicity of Fe3O4@PVDF and in-situ degradation of HA by OH and 1O2· This work provides insights for improving the separation properties and anti-fouling properties of PVDF membrane in the field of treatment organic wastewater.

Abstract:Fenton sludge generated in the flocculation stage of the Fenton oxidation process contains significant amounts of ferric iron and organic pollutants, which require proper treatment. Previous studies have demonstrated that adding Fenton sludge to an anaerobic digester can decompose some of the organic pollutants in the Fenton sludge to lower its environmental risk, but iron gradually accumulates in the reactor, which weakens the sustainability of the method. In this study, Fenton sludge was introduced into a hydrolytic acidification reactor with a weak acid environment to relieve the iron accumulation as well as improve the degradation of organic matter. The results showed that the added Fenton sludge acted as an extracellular electron acceptor to induce dissimilatory iron reduction, which increased chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and acidification efficiency by 16.1% and 19.8%, respectively, compared to the group without Fenton sludge. Along with the operation, more than 90% of the Fe(III) in Fenton sludge was reduced to Fe(II), and part of them was released to the effluent. Moreover, the Fe(II) in the effluent could be used as flocculants and Fenton reagents to further decrease the effluent COD by 29.8% and 44.5%, respectively. It provided a sustainable strategy to reuse Fenton sludge to enhance organic degradation based on the iron cycle.

Abstract:Extraction-Fenton oxidation process was used to pretreat wastewater from fumaric acid production,the influences of extractant types,volume ratios of oil to water and extractant to thinner,pH value,temperature and some other factors on the extraction effect were investigated;besides,the further treatment of the wastewater after the extraction by Fenton oxidation process was also studied.The results showed that: with tributyl phosphate(TBP) as the extractant and isooctanol as the thinner,the optimal condition for the said kind of wastewater treat-ment was as follows: the volume ratio of oil to water was 0.8,the volume ratio of extractant to thinner was 3 ∶ 1,the pH value was the same as the initial pH value of the wastewater.The removal rate of CODCr by a single extraction could reach 73% under the above condition;the wastewater after the extraction was further treated by Fenton oxidation process,when the dosage of H2O2 was 9/5 Qth(theoretical dosage),the n(Fe2+) ∶ n(H2O2) was 1 ∶ 4,the pH value was 3,the reaction time was 1 h,the mass concentration of CODCr of the treated wastewater decreased to 1 000 mg/L,the total removal rate reached 96.5%.
Treatment of industrial ferric sludge through a facile acid-assisted hydrothermal reaction: Focusing on dry mass reduction and hydrochar recyclability performance

Abstract:Large amounts of Fenton sludge and waste activated sludge (WAS) are mixed as ferric sludge (FS) in most industrial wastewater treatment plants. The treatment of such waste represents a challenge and quantity-dependent cost, so that a reliable way for FS waste reduction is required. In this study, we develop a facile acid-assisted hydrothermal treatment (HT) for the cost-efficient treatment of hazardous FS waste. Sulfuric acid was dosed at 0.25 mL/g dry solid (DS) to the HT process, which significantly increased the total solid mass reduction (TMR) by 25.1 % and dry mass reduction (DMR) by 104.4 %. The participation of sulfuric acid during the HT process changed the HT reaction pathway from dehydration to demethylation based on the analysis of the derivative thermogravimetric and Van Krevelen diagram. The addition of sulfuric acid improved the release of Fe from FS by 52.9 %, which contributed to the DMR. During the acid-assisted HT, Fe(III) was effectively reduced to Fe(II) within the produced hydrochar, which can be recycled for the Fenton reaction during the degradation of actual industrial wastewater such as pharmaceutical wastewater. Moreover, Sulfuric acid facilitated the generation of sulfonated hydrochar, which was efficient as an adsorbent for the complete removal of some metals such as Cu(II) - cation metal (98.8 %) and Cr(VI) - anion metal (99.9 %). This study firstly provides a novel and reliable approach for hazardous FS reduction and pointed out the recycling of hydrochar as the supplement for the Fenton reaction and adsorbents for some hazardous heavy metals.

Abstract:Anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS) is often limited by low disintegration rates of WAS and quick consumptions of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) by methanogens. This work proposed a novel, efficient and harmless pretreatment approach i.e., using potassium ferrate (PF) combined with free ammonia (FA), to enhance the disintegration of WAS and the accumulation of SCFAs from WAS anaerobic fermentation. It was found in this work, the best pretreating condition of WAS is 0.10 g PF/g VSS + 180 mg FA/L, under which the SCFAs consistence reached its maximum value (342.5 mg COD/g VSS), which was respectively 7.45-fold, 3.50-fold and 2.06-fold of that from the Blank, FA and PF reactor. Further in-depth mechanism study showed that the disintegration of WAS promoted and the biodegradability of fermentation broth enhanced under the PF + FA pretreatment condition. Moreover, the populations of fecal coliforms in WAS reduced significantly when PF + FA was adopted. Considering that FA could be produced in situ during the ammoniating process, the findings in this work promoted the utilization of PF-based pretreatment method in actual operations.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) constitute a promising technology to treat wastewater containing organic pollutants that are not easily biodegradable. They have received increasing attention in the research and development of wastewater treatment technologies in recent decades for their removal or degradation of recalcitrant pollutants or as pretreatments to convert pollutants into smaller compounds, which can be treated using conventional biological methods. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a typical refractory organic pollutant. It has received special attention due to its low biodegradability and the large amount of PVA-containing wastewater discharged from textile and paper mills. This review focuses on PVA removal and PVA wastewater pretreatment by AOPs, which include ozonation, Fenton oxidation, persulfate oxidation, ultrasound cavitation, ionizing radiation, photocatalytic oxidation, wet air oxidation and electrochemical oxidation. The mechanistic degradation pathways of PVA by AOPs are also discussed. In addition, a new classification of AOPs is applied for PVA treatment.
