Abstract:We report on non equilibrium field effect in insulating amorphous NbSi thin films having different Nb contents and thicknesses. The hallmark of an electron glass, namely the logarithmic growth of a memory dip in conductance versus gate voltage curves, is observed in all the films after a cooling from room temperature to 4.2 K. A very rich phenomenology is demonstrated. While the memory dip width is found to strongly vary with the film parameters, as was also observed in amorphous indium oxide films, screening lengths and temperature dependence of the dynamics are closer to what is observed in granular Al films. Our results demonstrate that the differentiation between continuous and discontinuous systems is not relevant to understand the discrepancies reported between various systems in the electron glass features. We suggest instead that they are not of fundamental nature and stem from differences in the protocols used and in the electrical inhomogeneity length scales within each material.

Evidence for finite-temperature glass transition in two dimensions

Abstract:Large-scale simulations have been performed in the current-driven two-dimensional XY gauge glass model with resistively shunted junction dynamics, by means of a very effecient algorithm proposed before. It is found that the linear resistivity at low temperatures tends to zero, which indicates a finite temperature glass transition. Dynamical scaling analysis demonstrates that a nearly perfect collapse of current voltage data can be achieved with the transition temperature T-c = 0.22 (in units of the Josephson coupling strength), dynamical critical exponent z = 2.0, and the static exponent v = 1.2, which agrees quite well with recent findings by an equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations and finite-size scaling analysis in RSJ simulations. Abstract:Large-scale simulations have been performed in the current-driven three-dimensional XY spin glass with resistively shunted-junction dynamics for sample sizes up to 64(3). It is observed that the linear resistivity at low temperatures tends to zero, providing a strong evidence of a finite-temperature phase-coherence (i.e., spin-glass) transition. Dynamical scaling analysis demonstrates that a perfect collapse of current-voltage data can be achieved. The obtained critical exponents agree with those in equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations, and are compatible with those observed in various experiments on high-T-c cuprate superconductors. It is suggested that the spin and the chirality order simultaneously. A genuine continuous depinning transition is found at zero temperature. For low temperature creep motion, critical exponents are evaluated, and a non-Arrhenius creep motion is observed in the low temperature ordered phase. It is proposed that the XY spin glass gives an effective description of the transport properties in high-T-c superconductors with d-wave symmetry.

Abstract:We report on non-equilibrium transport features observed in experiments using three-dimensional amorphous indium-oxide films. It is demonstrated that all the features that characterize intrinsic electron-glasses which heretofore were seen in two-dimensional samples are also observed in field-effect measurements of systems that exhibit three-dimensional variable-range-hopping. In particular, a memory-dip is observed in samples configured with gate. The memory-dip width and magnitude support models that associate the phenomenon with the Coulomb-gap. The memory-dip and the glassy effects disappear once the quenched disorder in the system is reduced and the system becomes diffusive. This happens when the Ioffe-Regel dimensional parameter k_{F}l exceeds 0.3 which is the critical value for the metal-to-insulator transition in all versions of the amorphous indium-oxides [Phys. Rev. B 86, 165101 (2012)]. This confirms that being in the Anderson localized phase is a pre-requisite for observing the memory-dip and the associated glassy effects. The results of the gating experiments suggest that the out-of equilibrium effect caused by inserted charge extend over spatial scales considerably larger than the screening length.

Abstract:Colloids near the glass concentration are often taken as models for molecular glasses. Yet, an important aspect of the dynamics of molecular glasses, structural recovery, has not been elucidated in colloids. We take advantage of a thermosensitive colloidal suspension to study the structural recovery after concentration jumps by using diffusing wave spectroscopy. The three classical aging signatures observed in molecular glasses are studied and the results are compared with those typical of molecular glasses. For the intrinsic isotherms, unlike molecular glasses, the colloid shows huge changes in relaxation time at equilibrium while the times required to reach the equilibrium state are nearly constant. For asymmetry of approach, we find a similar nonlinearity to that observed in the molecular glasses. For the memory experiment, while a memory effect is seen, the response is qualitatively different from that in molecular glasses.
Evidence for thermal activation in the glassy dynamics of insulating granular aluminum conductance

Abstract:Insulating granular aluminum is one of the proto-typical disordered insulators whose low temperature electrical conductance exhibits ubiquitous non-equilibrium phenomena. These include slow responses to temperature or gate voltage changes, characteristic field effect anomalies and ageing phenomena typical of a glass. In this system the influence of temperature on the glassy dynamics has remained elusive, leading to the belief that the slow relaxations essentially proceed via elastic quantum tunneling. A similar situation was met in insulating indium oxide and it was concluded that in high carrier density Anderson insulators, electrons form a quantum glass phase. In this work we experimentally demonstrate that thermal effects do play a role and that the slow dynamics in granular aluminum is subject to thermal activation. We show how its signatures can be revealed and activation energy distributions can be extracted, providing a promising grasp on the nature of the microscopic mechanism at work in glassy Anderson insulators. We explain why some of the experimental protocols previously used in the literature fail to reveal thermal activation in these systems. Our results and analyses call for a reassessment of the emblematic case of indium oxide, and question the existence of a quantum glass in any of the systems studied so far.

Abstract:We describe several experimental methods to quantify dynamics in electron glasses and illustrate their use in the glassy phase of crystalline indium-oxide films. These methods are applied to study the dependence of dynamics on temperature and on non-ohmic electric fields at liquid helium temperatures. It is shown that over a certain range of temperature the dynamics becomes slower with temperature or upon increasing an applied non-ohmic field, a behavior suggestive of a quantum-glass. It is demonstrated that non-ohmic fields produce qualitatively similar results as raising the system temperature. Quantitatively however, their effect may differ marekdly. The experimental advantages of using fields to mimic higher temperature are pointed out and illustrated.
Electron Glass in Ultrathin Granular Al Films at Low Temperatures

Abstract:Quench-condensed granular Al films, with normal-state sheet resistance close to 10 k$\Omega/\Box$, display strong hysteresis and ultraslow, non-exponential relaxation in the resistance when temperature is varied below 300 mK. The hysteresis is nonlinear and can be suppressed by a dc bias voltage. The relaxation time does not obey the Arrhenius form, indicating the existence of a broad distribution of low energy barriers. Furthermore, large resistance fluctuations, having a 1/f-type power spectrum with a low-frequency cut-off, are observed at low temperatures. With decreasing temperature, the amplitude of the fluctuation increases and the cut-off frequency decreases. These observations combine to provide a coherent picture that there exists a new glassy electron state in ultrathin granular Al films, with a growing correlation length at low temperatures.

Transition to exponential relaxation in weakly-disordered electron-glasses

Abstract:The out-of-equilibrium excess conductance of electron-glasses typically relaxes with a logarithmic time-dependence. Here it is shown that the log(t) relaxation of a weakly-disordered amorphous indium-oxide films crosses-over asymptotically to an exponential dependence. This allows assigning a well-defined relaxation-time t' for a given system-disorder (characterized by the Ioffe-Regel parameter). Near the metal-insulator transition, t' obeys the scaling relation with the same critical disorder where the zero-temperature conductivity of this system vanishes. The latter defines the position of the disorder-driven metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) which is a quantum-phase-transition. In this regard the electron-glass differs from classical-glasses such as the structural-glass and spin-glass. The ability to experimentally assign an unambiguous relaxation-time allows us to demonstrate the steep dependence of the electron-glass dynamics on carrier-concentration.

Electronic glasses from a broken gauge symmetry in disorder-free systems

Abstract:Glass phases can be stabilized by quenched disorders, as in most spin-glass materials, or self-generated through kinetic freezing in disorder-free systems. A canonical example of the latter is structural glasses, which have been extensively studied for many decades. Yet, how the rugged energy landscape of a glass phase is spontaneously generated in disorder-free systems remains one of the key questions in glass physics. Here we present a general electronic mechanism for the emergence of glassy phase using the example of itinerant electrons coupled to XY spins on a lattice. This model can also be be viewed as the mean-field theory of a superconducting system with attractive density-density interactions. Intriguingly, the electron gauge symmetry in the strong pairing limit gives rise to a macroscopic degeneracy of XY spins. In the presence of electron hopping that breaks the gauge symmetry, the lifting of the extensive degeneracy leads to a glass phase with disordered pairings. Our findings highlight a novel scenario in which a glassy state originates from the breaking of quantum gauge symmetry without quenched disorders.

Intrinsic electron-glass effects in strongly-localized thallium-oxide films

Abstract:Transport measurements made on films of thallium-oxide (n-type semiconductor) are presented and discussed. The focus in this work is on the strongly-localized regime where charge transport is by variable-range-hopping. It is demonstrated that, at liquid-helium temperatures, these films exhibit all the characteristic features of intrinsic electron-glasses. These include a slow (logarithmic in time) conductance-relaxation that may be induced by any of the following protocols: Quench-cooling from high temperatures, sudden change of gate-voltage, exposure to infrared radiation, and stressing the system with a non-Ohmic field. The microstructure of the films are characterized by electron microscopy and their carrier-concentration are measured by Hall effect. Field-effect experiments reveal a memory-dip that has a width compatible with the carrier-concentration of the system as compared with previously studied electron-glasses. It is observed that the common ingredient in all the systems that exhibit electron-glass effects is high carrier-concentration suggesting that their localized sites may be multi-occupied even when deep into the insulating regime. That lightly-doped semiconductors do not show intrinsic electron-glass effects is consistent with this empirical observation. The connection between the memory-dip and the Coulomb-gap is discussed in light of these findings.

Abstract:We show that introducing long-range Coulomb interactions immediately lifts the massive ground state degeneracy induced by geometric frustration for electrons on quarter-filled triangular lattices in the classical limit. Important consequences include the stabilization of a stripe-ordered crystalline (global) ground state, but also the emergence of very many low-lying metastable states with amorphous "stripe-glass" spatial structures. Melting of the stripe order thus leads to a frustrated Coulomb liquid at intermediate temperatures, showing remarkably slow (viscous) dynamics, with very long relaxation times growing in Arrhenius fashion upon cooling, as typical of strong glass formers. On shorter time scales, the system falls out of equilibrium and displays the aging phenomena characteristic of supercooled liquids above the glass transition. Our results show remarkable similarity with the recent observations of charge-glass behavior in ultraclean triangular organic materials of the θ-(BEDT-TTF)(2) family.

Abstract:Glassy behavior is manifested by three time-dependent characteristics of a dynamic physical property. Such behaviors have been found in the electrical conductivity transients of various disordered systems, but the mechanisms that yield the glassy behavior are still under intensive debate. The focus of the present work is on the effect of the quantum confinement (QC) and the Coulomb blockade (CB) effects on the experimentally observed glassy-like behavior in semiconductor nanomaterials. Correspondingly, we studied the transient electrical currents in semiconductor systems that contain CdSe or Si nanosize crystallites, as a function of that size and the ambient temperature. In particular, in contrast to the more commonly studied post-excitation behavior in electronic glassy systems, we have also examined the current transients during the excitation. This has enabled us to show that the glassy behavior is a result of the nanosize nature of the studied systems and thus to conclude that the observed characteristics are sensitive to the above effects. Following this and the temperature dependence of the transients, we derived a more detailed macroscopic and microscopic understanding of the corresponding transport mechanisms and their glassy manifestations. We concluded that the observed electrical transients must be explained not only by the commonly suggested principle of the minimization of energy upon the approach to equilibrium, as in the mechanical (say, viscose) glass, but also by the principle of minimal energy dissipation by the electrical current which determines the percolation network of the electrical conductivity. We further suggest that the deep reason for the glassy-like behavior that is observed in the electrical transients of the nanomaterials studied is the close similarity between the localization range of electrons due to the Coulomb blockade and the caging range of the uncharged atomic-size particles in the classical mechanical glass. These considerations are expected to be useful for the understanding and planning of semiconductor nanodevices such as corresponding quantum dot memories and quantum well MOSFETs.

Abstract:Results of DC and frequency dependent conductivity in the quantum limit, i.e. hw > kT, for a broad range of dopant concentrations in nominally uncompensated, crystalline phosphorous doped silicon and amorphous niobium-silicon alloys are reported. These materials fall under the general category of disordered insulating systems, which are referred to as electron glasses. Using microwave resonant cavities and quasi-optical millimeter wave spectroscopy we are able to study the frequency dependent response on the insulating side of the metal-insulator transition. We identify a quantum critical regime, a Fermi glass regime and a Coulomb glass regime. Our phenomenological results lead to a phase diagram description, or taxonomy, of the electrodynamic response of electron glass systems.
Nonequilibrium transport and Electron-Glass effects in thin GexTe films

Abstract:We report on results of nonequilibrium transport measurements made on thin films of germanium-telluride (Ge_xTe) at cryogenic temperatures. Owing to a rather large deviation from stoichiometry (app. 10% of Ge vacancies), these films exhibit p-type conductivity with carrier-concentration N>10^20cm^(-3) and can be made either in the diffusive or strongly-localized regime by a judicious choice of preparation and post-treatment conditions. In both regimes the system shows persistent photoconductivity following excitation by a brief exposure to infrared radiation. Persistent photoconductivity is also observed in GexTe samples alloyed with Mn. However, in both Ge_xTe and GeMn_xTe_y the effect is much weaker than that observable in GeSb_xTe_y alloys suggesting that antimony plays an important role in the phenomenon. Structural studies of these films reveal an unusual degree of texture that is rarely realized in strongly-disordered systems with high carrier-concentrations. Anderson-localized samples of Ge_xTe exhibit non-ergodic transport which are characteristic of intrinsic electron-glasses, including a well developed memory-dip and slow relaxation of the excess conductance created in the excited state. These results support the conjecture that electron-glass effects with inherently long relaxation times is a generic property of all Anderson-localized systems with large carrier-concentration.

Abstract:Amorphous solids exhibit quasi-universal low-temperature anomalies whose origin has been ascribed to localized tunneling defects. Using an advanced Monte Carlo procedure, we create {\it in silico} glasses spanning from hyperquenched to ultrastable glasses. Using a multidimensional path-finding protocol, we locate tunneling defects with energy splittings smaller than $k_{B}T_Q$, with $T_Q$ the temperature below which quantum effects are relevant ($T_Q \approx 1 \,$K in most experiments). We find that as the stability of a glass increases, its energy landscape as well as the manner in which it is probed tend to deplete the density of tunneling defects, as observed in recent experiments. We explore the real-space nature of tunneling defects, and find that they are mostly localized to a few atoms, but are occasionally dramatically delocalized.

Abstract:A model of spinless interacting electrons in presence of randomness is examined using an extended dynamical mean-field formulation. When the interaction strength is large as compared to the Fermi energy, a low temperature glassy phase is identified, which in our formulation corresponds to a replica-symmetry breaking instability. The glassy phase is characterized by a pseudo-gap in the single particle density of states, reminiscent of the Coulomb gap of Efros and Shklovskii. Due to ergodicity breaking, the ``zero-field cooled'' compressibility of this electron glass vanishes at T=0, consistent with absence of screening. When the Fermi energy exceeds a critical value, the glassy phase is suppressed, and normal metallic behavior is recovered.

Abstract:Abstract In the absence of periodicity, the structure of glass is ill-defined, and a large number of structural states are found at similar energy levels. However, little is known about how these states are connected to each other in the potential energy landscape. We simulate mechanical relaxation by molecular dynamics for a prototypical $${{{\rm{C}}}}{{{{\rm{u}}}}}_{64.5}{{{\rm{Z}}}}{{{{\rm{r}}}}}_{35.5}$$ C u 64.5 Z r 35.5 metallic glass and follow the mechanical energy loss of each atom to track the change in the state. We find that the energy barriers separating these states are remarkably low, only of the order of 1 meV, implying that even quantum fluctuations can overcome these potential energy barriers. Our observation of numerous small ripples in the bottom of the potential energy landscape puts many assumptions regarding the thermodynamic states of metallic glasses into question and suggests that metallic glasses are not totally frozen at the local atomic level.

Abstract:The fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT), connecting dielectric susceptibility and polarization noise was studied in glycerol below its glass transition temperature Tg. Weak FDT violations were observed after a quench from just above to just below Tg, for frequencies above the alpha peak. Violations persisted up to 10^5 times the thermal equilibration time of the configurational degrees of freedom under study, but comparable to the average relaxation time of the material. These results suggest that excess energy flows from slower to faster relaxing modes.
