Abstract:Plate fin heat exchanger (PFHE) is key equipment where condensation, liquefaction, evaporation and other heat exchanges occur in alr separation unit (ASU). The distinctive characteristics of PFHE are small temperature difference unstable heat transfer;secondary heat transfer;low allowance resistance;fierce physical properties changing of multi-streams. The existing design methods face the problems such as unbalanced heat load of passage;maldistributed passage flow;increased flow resistance;decreased thermal efficiency. Therefore, a segmented design method of performance enhancement for large PFHE of cryogenic ASU is proposed. Passage amount of each fluid is preset according to the mass flow rate of multi-streams on the basis of ASU process. The feasible fluid is originally prearranged with standard normal distribution probability passage-by-passage forward from external cover plate. Arrangement backtracking is realized by rearranging finite passages backward. The optimal passage arrangement of PFHE is determined from all possible passage arrangement according to synthesis criteria of peak, variance and norm of accumulative heat load. Heat balance equation set is built in longitudinal and horizontal direction. Segmented design of PFHE is realized considering heat transfer among multi-streams of single-cold-stream and dual-cold-stream to improve design accuracy of long passage heat exchanger parameters. The PFHE experiment of heat transfer and flow resistance is accomplished. The PFHE cores with different fins and flow configurations are compared to verify the segmented design method of PFHE. The proposed method is applied to the development of corollary PFHE of 8×104 N·m3O2/h ASU.

Abstract:In order to improve the flow uniformity in a plate-fin heat exchanger (PFHE), a modified header structure with a plain baffle inside is proposed. Flow distribution and pressure drop in the header were studied by numerical methods. The results show that the modified header is highly efficient in improving the flow uniformity with negligible pressure drop increase. A performance effectiveness factor was introduced to predict the effects of the modified structure on the performance of the PFHE. Influences of baffle structure parameters on modified structure performances were further discussed. The modified header structure can effectively improve the performance of a PFHE.

Abstract:As the development of heat exchangers from two streams and single operating condition to multi-stream and multiple operating conditions, passage arrangement becomes a key problem for heat exchanger design. In this paper, a new passage arrangement design method for multiple operating conditions is developed for multi-stream plate-fin heat exchangers. The integral-mean temperature differences method (IMTD) is expanded from three-stream to multi-stream plate-fin heat exchanger, and then the correlation model among heat transfer rate, passage arrangement and fin design parameters is constructed based on IMTD. Upon the maximum heat transfer rate under each operating condition, the passage arrangement coefficient of each condition and the passage arrangement design space of multiple operating conditions are calculated. As passage arrangements being design variables, the passage arrangement under multiple operating conditions is designed using hybrid particle swarm algorithm. Effectiveness of the passage arrangement design approach is verified through optimization design of a 24 streams heat exchanger, and the results show that the heat exchanger obtained by the proposed algorithm exhibit comfort heat transfer rates under multiple operating conditions. Finally, the method is used to design the passage arrangement of main heat exchanger in 80,000Nm3 air separation unit.

Abstract:In this paper, the theory for the method used in national standard GB 151 for designing floating head heat exchanger was expounded. Then, on this theoretical basis, the methods of applying the formula and curves in GB 151 for obtaining the minimum design thickness of tubesheet in floating head heat exchanger, and calculating the stresses in tubesheet with actual thickness of tubesheet and the stress in heat transfer tube were provided. One practical example was used in the paper to demonstrated that when the actual thickness of tubesheet is largely different from the minimum design thickness of tubesheet, the stress in tube will have a great reduction.

Abstract:Heat transfer between two streams is common and simple and well established and perfectly commercialized. Normally, the exchanger that is used for this purpose is shell and tube heat exchanger but in some industrial production unit where more than one reactant is to be preheated or pre-cooled for chemical reaction and same as post heating and post cooling required of multiple streams at same or different temperatures, Problem that is associated with such type shell and tube heat exchanger is that it can’t handle the multiple stream and for handling multiple streams we required more number of exchangers due to which capital cost increases and required more care of handling because the number of units increases. To overcome this problem, we need more than one heat sinks with one or more than one heat source that will minimize the covered volume per unit heat transfer area, the number of unit operation, operation time, man power and the capital cost with increasing thermal efficiency and heat utilization so to overcome this problem we need to move towards multi stream heat exchanger for handling multiple streams at once for heat exchange. Multi stream heat exchanger is opening of a new class of heat transfer equipment which deals more than two different streams for heat exchange. Such a way number of units can be reduced, which minimize time and space. With a little bit increase in complexity the operational cost will decrease and improve the thermal efficiency of heat transfer equipment, which minimize thermal losses and maximize the heat utilization which directly decrease the equipment size and capital cost. Abstract:This article deals with an analysis of fin-tube joints as functions of topological alterations of the joint fillet size. Based on numerical predictions of a joint topology formed by the surface tension driven reactive flow of molten metal, and subsequently verified by empirical evidence gathered through both laboratory and industrial testing, the topology alterations were identified for thermal integrity studies. Subsequently, thermal characteristics of corresponding fin-tube joints were determined in terms of two models of the thermal contact resistance. Model predictions of the fin efficiency with an altered topology of the joint zone were compared with the simulation results from a computational fluid dynamics study, and the results fit well. Numerical predictions of joint topology were devised using an in-house-developed finite-element code, and verified by the Surface Evolver code. Such prediction provided quantitative joint topology information that was needed in assessments of the joint thermal performance. Experimental data were obtained using a computer-controlled transparent hot zone with an ultra-high-purity nitrogen background atmosphere under tightly controlled conditions, and also by an analysis of the state-of-the-art manufacturing process data obtained from an industrial setting. It is demonstrated that a value of fin efficiency, assumed as recommended by traditional sizing design procedures, may drastically differ from actual values.

Abstract:An analytical method is proposed to solute the steady characteristics of some special heat ex-changing component.This paper discussed the double-faced heat transfer characteristic with helix inner tube,and puts up the energy equation of such heat exchanging component.After solving the equations with analytical method,an analytical expression is given,which can describe the liquid temperature distribution in the component.The method is used for solving two example.In the steam generator calculation,an iterative technique is used for calculating the length of apiece section.
Structure Improvement of Floating Head Heat Exchanger Based on Computational Fluid Dynamics

Abstract:Floating head heat exchanger is widely used in the chemical plant,especially in the refining area.By analyzing the floating head end structure of the floating head exchanger,there may be found in possession of inside media phenomenon floating head stuck end.To identify and address the phenomenon of media,using numerical simulation software ANSYS FLUENT,the flow field of the floating head heat exchanger is simulated and analyzed.Simulation results confirm the floating head contains the medium flow dead zone.Therefore,we propose four structural improvement methods.The results show that all of:four kinds of bypass floating head exchangers can eliminate the flow dead zone effectively,and floating head connected with the shell,with outflow bypass is the most reasonable because it can maintain the flow shape in the shell.This improved structure has very important significance to improve the heat transfer efficiency of the heat exchanger and reduce project failure of the heat exchanger.

Abstract:In this paper,a fixed tube-sheet heat exchanger that may exist with security risks was assessed in a Sinopec company.The general program for the heat exchanger was developed by using ANSYS parametric design language(APDL).It can be analyzed by the thermal structure coupled field in the indirect method.Respectively,the stress analysis data was obtained under the tube side pressure,shell pressure and thermal load that is in service conditions.According to JB4732-95 steel pressure vessels design by analysis to analyze and check the data,the results showed that all components of the heat exchanger meets the check conditions,and the safety margins are greater than 1.23.It provides the reference for the safety assessment of the heat exchanger in service.

Abstract:A double pipe heat exchanger with outward helically corrugated tube is numerically studied and optimized. Under the determined geometry parameters of the corrugated tube, the parameter of the shell side is desired to obtain. Also, the mechanism of enhanced heat transfer and complex flow features on the shell side is investigated and compared with the tube side. Matching flow rates of tube and shell sides are solved by a multi-objective optimization method concerning simultaneously the heat transfer performance, pressure drop and energy benefit. It was found that, the variation tendencies of local heat transfer and pressure drop on tube and shell sides are exactly the same, and both the heat transfer and pressure drop are increased with decreasing the shell diameter. For a comprehensive consideration, the shell diameter of 38 mm is the best parameter to obtain a high heat transfer coefficient, and a low pressure drop. The optimal solutions of the matching flow rates on tube and shell sides are obtained by the genetic algorithm, and two equilibrium solutions are obtained for the tube and shell sides. Abstract:In this paper, a novel and simple method was proposed to improve the flow maldistribution in the rectangular header of the small and compact DTP-STHXs. The numerical simulation was carried out to investigate and evaluate the performance of flow distribution based on experiment. The results showed that the flow distribution of the second tube-pass with conventional header configuration was uniform enough to use in practice. Nevertheless, the flow distribution of the first tube-pass was seriously uneven with E-s = 0.157 and R-v = 2.21. The maximum absolute flow deviation E-i relative to the average flow rate was up to 42.1%. In addition to the first row tubes, the flow distribution of the rest of tubes has been improved dramatically after using the novel header configuration. Two approaches were further proposed to optimize it. Eventually, 90% of tubes within 10% flow deviation was obtained by the optimal header configuration (configuration B with theta = 50 degrees) with E-s = 0.068 and R-v = 1.28. Compared to the conventional header configuration, the standard flow deviation E-s and the ratio R-v decreased by 56.7% and 42.1%, respectively.
Sealing Evaluation of Tubesheet-Flanged Joint under Internal Pressure and Non-Axisymmetry Thermal Loading

Abstract:Tubesheet-flanged joint is usually used in some situations for its detachability, such as some small scale heat exchangers. This type of structure is convenient for maintenance. But leakage will become a major failure mode for flanged joint, especially for heat exchangers with multiple passes. Temperature gradient of different passes may cause non-axisymmetric thermal loading, stress and deformation distribution. In this paper, a detailed three dimensional finite element model of a tubesheet-flanged joint of an oil-water heat exchanger is established with a flexible graphite metallic spiral wound gasket. This kind of gasket has a good compression resilience performance. The compression-unloading curve of gasket under different temperatures are used. The stress and temperature distribution of the joint and gaskets are simulated under preload condition, pressure condition and operation condition. The seating performance are evaluated using gasket compression stress and flange stiffness criteria. The results show that the gasket compression stress distributions under preload and pressure condition are similar. Under operation condition, the gasket compression stress in local area decreases significantly and the gasket compression stress distribution along the circumferential direction becomes non-uniform because of different pass temperature. The Taylor-water method, typically used for flange design, provides a design bolt load for sizing the bolt and flange, does not provide an explicit calculation for the assembly bolt load. At some locations the compression stress is much smaller than minimum seating stress using Taylor-water method to determine bolt preload. However, under preload of half bolt yield strength recommended by ASME PCC-1, all assessment parameters are within the allowable limits.

Abstract:Presented is a numerical method for the differential thermal and hydraulic design of multistream compact heat exchanger. The entire exchanger with assumed length is first discretized into many slices, and at each slices, the fluid in every passage and the two bounding walls are taken as three nodes. The energy balance. is used to set up the temperature equation for each passage, resulting in a set of algebraic equations for all the passages in one slice. This set of equations is solved from slice to slice for the entire exchanger. The arrangement of passages is improved according to the calculated temperature non-uniformity. The assumed length is modified according to the predicted averaged exit temperatures. A two-step method is proposed for passage stacking which can improve the uniformity of the fluid temperature, A numerical example shows the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper carried out a series of numerical simulations on the heat transfer and pressure drop performance of six specific kinds of H-type finned-tube heat exchangers.Fluent software could effectively simulate the flow and heat transfer process in the smoke side and water side of the H-type finned-tube heat exchanger.The coupled heat transfer calculations between the fluid and the solid were constructed and the temperature and velocity distribution were achieved.The effect of the structural parameters of H-type finned-tube heat exchanger on the heat transfer and pressure drop performance was simply analyzed,which could provide references on the optimization of the design and manufacture of the heat exchanger.

Abstract:The contact state of a seamless internal threaded copper tube and an aluminium foil fin not only affects the heat transfer efficiency of a tube–fin heat exchanger but also seriously affects its service life. In this study, hydraulic expansion technology was used to connect the copper tube with an internal thread with a 7 mm diameter to the fin of the heat exchanger. The influence of the expansion pressure and pressure holding time on the contact state was analysed through experiments and finite element simulation, and the variation law of the two on the contact state was obtained. The contact state was characterised by the contact gap and contact area. In order to obtain the specific contact area value, a new method of measuring the contact area was developed to reveal the variation in contact area between the copper tube and the fin after expansion. The results show that the contact gap decreases with an increase in expansion pressure, while the pressure holding time remains the same. The contact area increases with an increase in expansion pressure, and the rate of increase slows. When the expansion pressure is 18 MPa, the average contact gap is approximately 0.018 mm. When the expansion pressure reaches 16 MPa, the contact area ratio is 91.0%. When the expansion pressure increases to 18 MPa, the contact area ratio only increases by approximately 0.6%. Compared with the influence of the expansion pressure on the increase in contact area, the influence of the pressure holding time on the contact area is lower.

Abstract:In this paper, the thermal stress and deformation of the internally finned bayonet tube used for high temperature heat exchangers are presented. The internally finned bayonet tube is developed from the traditional bayonet tube, where the longitudinal plain fins are proposed to be welded on the inner surface of outer tube to enhance the heat transfer performance. However, significant temperature gradient is observed along both the axial and radial directions. The large stress is still generated in the joint of inner fin and inner tube, and the joint of inner fin and outer tube due to the discontinuous change of the structure, although the bayonet structure has a great potential to reduce the stress. Therefore, the inner fin and inner tube are proposed to not be welded together so that they can expand or contract freely and the expansion does not affect each other. The effect of gap between inner tube and inner fin on the stress and heat transfer performances is compared. The result indicates that the gap between them should be less than 1 mm for considered bayonet tube with 6 mm annulus height according to the coupled consideration of heat transfer and stress performances.
Thermal Design of a Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger with Internal Fins

Abstract:To alleviate the severe challenge of energy depletion, it’s extremely urgent to improve the available heat recovery technology. Heat exchangers play a key role in waste heat recovery and have attracted much attention. To recover waste heat, a shell and tube heat exchanger with sinusoidal wavy fins and blocked-core tube inside the tube, and with bare surfaces outside was designed by segmented log-mean temperature difference (LMTD) method. In the shell and tube heat exchanger, liquid water outside the tube was heated by compressed air inside. The effect of air-side inlet pressure on the geometry of heat exchanger was investigated under identical temperature conditions (Ta,i, Ta,o, Tw,i, Tw,o) and water-side inlet pressure. The results show that air-side inlet pressure has little effect on the structure parameters of heat exchanger, but greatly affect the pressure drop of air side.

Abstract:A novel combined single shell-pass shell-and-tube heat exchanger with two-layer continuous helical baffles (CSSP-STHX) has been proposed in the present study as an alternative solution of overcoming the drawbacks of the shell-and-tube heat exchanger with continuous helical baffles (CH-STHX). The shell-side baffles of CSSP-STHX are consisting of inner layer and outer layer continuous helical baffles, which are not on the same helical surface. There is no sleeve tube between inner and outer layers, thus complex flow field can be formed in the shell side which means inner layer fluid can rush out to the outer layer under the centrifugal force. Numerical simulations are carried out to compare thermo hydraulic performances of the three heat exchangers which are shell-and-tube heat exchanger with segmental baffles (SG-STHX), CH-STHX and CSSP-STHX. The results show that the CSSP-STHX has a higher heat transfer performance while maintaining a lower pressure drop. The CSSP-STHX might be an ideal choice to replace the SG-STHX and CH-STHX in industrial applications.

Investigation of a Novel High Temperature Heat Exchanger with Hybrid Internally and Externally Finned Tubes

Abstract:In this paper, a novel HTHE with hybrid internally and externally finned tubes is presented with the help of an improved heat exchanger design program. It can be used in high temperature environment, such as the waste heat recovery system and high temperature reactor. The proposed HTHE can be divided into two regions according to different temperatures of tube walls. H-type fins and twisted-tape insertions are welded inside and outside the tubes in high temperature region. Wave-like longitudinal fins are welded inside the tubes in low temperature region. Thermal calculations are performed to determine the heat transfer characteristic of the HTHE with a similar twisted-tape-inserted tube HTHE as comparison. The effectiveness and pressure drop are obtained at the gas temperature between 600 °C and 900 °C. The calculation results indicate that the volume flow-rate on both sides has significant effects on pressure drop, while the effectiveness has a small increment as the gas temperature increases. Comparison between the novel HTHE and the traditional HTHE indicates that the proposed HTHE has better heat transfer performance.
