Abstract:These are the lecture notes that accompanied the course of the same name that I taught at the Eindhoven University of Technology from 2021 to 2023. The course is intended as an introduction to neural networks for mathematics students at the graduate level and aims to make mathematics students interested in further researching neural networks. It consists of two parts: first a general introduction to deep learning that focuses on introducing the field in a formal mathematical way. The second part provides an introduction to the theory of Lie groups and homogeneous spaces and how it can be applied to design neural networks with desirable geometric equivariances. The lecture notes were made to be as self-contained as possible so as to accessible for any student with a moderate mathematics background. The course also included coding tutorials and assignments in the form of a set of Jupyter notebooks that are publicly available at https://gitlab.com/bsmetsjr/mathematics_of_neural_networks.

Abstract:This in an introduction to random matrix theory, giving an impression of some of the most important aspects of this modern subject. In particular, it covers the basic combinatorial and analytic theory around Wigner's semicircle law, featuring also concentration phenomena, and the Tracy-Widom distribution of the largest eigenvalue. The circular law and a discussion of Voiculescu's multivariate extension of the semicircle law, as an appetizer for free probability theory, also make an appearance. The material here was presented in the winter term 2019/20 at Saarland University in 24 lectures of 90 minutes each. Abstract:These lecture notes attempt a mathematical treatment of game theory akin to mathematical physics. A game instance is defined as a sequence of states of an underlying system. This viewpoint unifies classical mathematical models for 2-person and, in particular, combinatorial and zero-sum games as well as models for investing and betting. n-person games are studied with emphasis on notions of utilities, potentials and equilibria, which allows to subsume cooperative games as special cases. The represenation of a game theoretic system in a Hilbert space furthermore establishes a link to the mathematical model of quantum mechancis and general interaction systems. The notes sketch an outline of the theory. Details are available as a textbook elsewhere.

Exploring Weak Strategy-Proofness in Voting Theory

Abstract:Voting is the aggregation of individual preferences in order to select a winning alternative. Selection of a winner is accomplished via a voting rule, e.g., rank-order voting, majority rule, plurality rule, approval voting. Which voting rule should be used? In social choice theory, desirable properties of voting rules are expressed as axioms to be satisfied. This thesis focuses on axioms concerning strategic manipulation by voters. Sometimes, voters may intentionally misstate their true preferences in order to alter the outcome for their own advantage. For example, in plurality rule, if a voter knows that their top-choice candidate will lose, then they might instead vote for their second-choice candidate just to avoid an even less desirable result. When no coalition of voters can strategically manipulate, then the voting rule is said to satisfy the axiom of Strategy-Proofness. A less restrictive axiom is Weak Strategy-Proofness (as defined by Dasgupta and Maskin (2019)), which allows for strategic manipulation by all but the smallest coalitions. Under certain intuitive conditions, Dasgupta and Maskin (2019) proved that the only voting rules satisfying Strategy-Proofness are rank-order voting and majority rule. In my thesis, I generalize their result, by proving that rank-order voting and majority rule are surprisingly still the only voting rules satisfying Weak Strategy-Proofness.

Abstract:These are lecture notes written at the University of Zurich during spring 2014 and spring 2015. The first part of the notes gives an introduction to probability theory. It explains the notion of random events and random variables, probability measures, expectation, distributions, characteristic function, independence of random variables, types of convergence and limit theorems. The first part is separated into two different chapters. The first chapter is about combinatorial aspects of probability theory and the second chapter is the actual introduction to probability theory, which contains the modern probability language. The second part covers conditional expectations, martingales and Markov chains, which are easily accessible after reading the first part. The chapters are exactly covered in this order and go into some more details of the respective topic.

Abstract:These lecture notes were written with the aim to provide an accessible though technically solid introduction to the logic of systematical analyses of statistical data to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, in particular in the Social Sciences, Economics, and the Financial Services. They may also serve as a general reference for the application of quantitative--empirical research methods. In an attempt to encourage the adoption of an interdisciplinary perspective on quantitative problems arising in practice, the notes cover the four broad topics (i) descriptive statistical processing of raw data, (ii) elementary probability theory, (iii) the operationalisation of one-dimensional latent statistical variables according to Likert's widely used scaling approach, and (iv) null hypothesis significance testing within the frequentist approach to probability theory concerning (a) distributional differences of variables between subgroups of a target population, and (b) statistical associations between two variables. The relevance of effect sizes for making inferences is emphasised. These lecture notes are fully hyperlinked, thus providing a direct route to original scientific papers as well as to interesting biographical information. They also list many commands for running statistical functions and data analysis routines in the software packages R, SPSS, EXCEL and OpenOffice. The immediate involvement in actual data analysis practices is strongly recommended.

Abstract:This document collects the lecture notes from my course "Communication Complexity (for Algorithm Designers),'' taught at Stanford in the winter quarter of 2015. The two primary goals of the course are: 1. Learn several canonical problems that have proved the most useful for proving lower bounds (Disjointness, Index, Gap-Hamming, etc.). 2. Learn how to reduce lower bounds for fundamental algorithmic problems to communication complexity lower bounds. Along the way, we'll also: 3. Abstract:These are the lecture notes of the master's course "Quantum Computing", taught at Chalmers University of Technology every fall since 2020, with participation of students from RWTH Aachen and Delft University of Technology. The aim of this course is to provide a theoretical overview of quantum computing, excluding specific hardware implementations. Topics covered in these notes include quantum algorithms (such as Grover's algorithm, the quantum Fourier transform, phase estimation, and Shor's algorithm), variational quantum algorithms that utilise an interplay between classical and quantum computers [such as the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) and the quantum approximate optimisation algorithm (QAOA), among others], quantum error correction, various versions of quantum computing (such as measurement-based quantum computation, adiabatic quantum computation, and the continuous-variable approach to quantum information), the intersection of quantum computing and machine learning, and quantum complexity theory. Lectures on these topics are compiled into 12 chapters, most of which contain a few suggested exercises at the end, and interspersed with four tutorials, which provide practical exercises as well as further details. At Chalmers, the course is taught in seven weeks, with three two-hour lectures or tutorials per week. It is recommended that the students taking the course have some previous experience with quantum physics, but not strictly necessary.

Abstract:The traditional axiomatic approach to voting is motivated by the problem of reconciling differences in subjective preferences. In contrast, a dominant line of work in the theory of voting over the past 15 years has considered a different kind of scenario, also fundamental to voting, in which there is a genuinely "best" outcome that voters would agree on if they only had enough information. This type of scenario has its roots in the classical Condorcet Jury Theorem; it includes cases such as jurors in a criminal trial who all want to reach the correct verdict but disagree in their inferences from the available evidence, or a corporate board of directors who all want to improve the company's revenue, but who have different information that favors different options. This style of voting leads to a natural set of questions: each voter has a {\em private signal} that provides probabilistic information about which option is best, and a central question is whether a simple plurality voting system, which tabulates votes for different options, can cause the group decision to arrive at the correct option. We show that plurality voting is powerful enough to achieve this: there is a way for voters to map their signals into votes for options in such a way that --- with sufficiently many voters --- the correct option receives the greatest number of votes with high probability. We show further, however, that any process for achieving this is inherently expensive in the number of voters it requires: succeeding in identifying the correct option with probability at least $1 - \eta$ requires $\Omega(n^3 \epsilon^{-2} \log \eta^{-1})$ voters, where $n$ is the number of options and $\epsilon$ is a distributional measure of the minimum difference between the options.

Abstract:This paper provides a serious attempt towards constructing a switching-algebraic theory for weighted monotone voting systems, whether they are scalar-weighted or vector-weighted. The paper concentrates on the computation of a prominent index of voting powers, viz., the Banzhaf voting index. This computation involves two distinct operations: (a) either Boolean differencing (Boolean differentiation) or Boolean quotient construction (Boolean restriction), and (b) computation of the weight (the number of true vectors or minterms) of a switching function. We introduce novel Boolean-based symmetry-aware techniques for computing the Banzhaf index by way of four voting systems. The paper finally outlines further steps needed towards the establishment of a full-fledged switching-algebraic theory of weighted monotone voting systems. Througout the paper, a tutorial flavour is retained, multiple solutions of consistent results are given, and a liasion is established among game-theoretic voting theory, switching algebra, and sytem reliability analysis.
