Abstract:Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC), a rare thyroid cancer with poor prognosis, is associated with insufficient function of the sodium iodide symporter (NIS). Estrogen-related receptor γ (ERRγ) is a member of the orphan nuclear receptors with important functions in cell development and homeostasis. However, there are no reports that demonstrate whether ERRγ is related to NIS function. Here, we evaluated the role of ERRγ in the regulation of NIS function in ATC cells using GSK5182, an inverse agonist of ERRγ. Methods: Two ATC cell lines, BHT-101 and CAL62, were incubated with GSK5182 at various time points and doses. The NIS function in the ATC cells was serially assessed by their uptake of radioiodine. The effects of GSK5182 on ERRγ and the mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase pathway, as well as on NIS protein, were evaluated by immunoblot assay. To examine whether the GSK5182-induced NIS functional activity can be affected by inhibition of the MAP kinase pathway, the MAP kinase activity and levels of radioiodine uptake were determined after application of a mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MEK) inhibitor to GSK5182-treated cells. Finally, the cytotoxic effect of 131I was determined by clonogenic assay. Results: Treatment with GSK5182 resulted in dose- and time-dependent increases in iodide uptake in ATC cells, which were accompanied by both the downregulation of ERRγ protein and the activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) 1/2. Both the increased radioiodine uptake and ERK1/2 activation of ATC cells were completely inhibited by the specific MEK inhibitor. GSK5182 treatment enhanced the membrane localization of NIS in both ATC cell lines. Accordingly, preexposure to GSK5182 enhanced the cytotoxic effects of 131I treatment in ATC cells. Conclusion: These findings suggest that the inverse agonist of ERRγ enhances the responsiveness of radioiodine therapy by modulating NIS function in ATC cells via the regulation of ERRγ and the MAP kinase signaling pathway.
Multi-scale nanofiber membrane functionalized with metal-organic frameworks for efficient filtration of both PM2.5 and CH3CHO with colorimetric NH3 detection

Abstract:Air filtration technology for mitigating pollution due to harmful mixtures of particulate matter (PMs) and yellow dust has been continuously improved. However, significantly small-sized airborne contaminants, such as PM2.5, and toxic gases, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), remain in the atmosphere and critically affect the human health. Therefore, the development of an integrated filtration system with fast detection and high removal efficiency toward various airborne pollutants without significant interference from airflow is required. Herein, we designed a hybrid air filtration system comprising a colorimetric multi-scale nanofiber (NF)/nanonet (NN) membrane and a metal–organic framework (MOF)-decorated mesh substrate to remove PM2.5 and toxic gases in the air. The electrospinning of a halochromic dye (bromocresol purple; BCP) with a polyacrylonitrile solution spontaneously forms spider-web-like NN networks between NFs, which significantly improves the filtration efficiency, particularly for sub-120 nm aerosol particles with a high quality factor of 0.0387 Pa−1. The BCP components in the NF/NN membrane demonstrated ultrafast and reversible colorimetric sensing properties within 5 s when exposed to 20 ppm ammonia gas. Furthermore, the adsorptive UiO-66-NH2 MOF-grown macroporous mesh contributes to the removal of acetaldehyde as well as provides an efficient membrane support with negligible increase in the pressure drop.

Abstract:Particulate air pollution is a global environmental problem, with PM 2.5 being the primary pollutant. One of the most effective ways to remove particles from the air is through filtration. Therefore, high-performance air filters are urgently needed to combat the harm caused by PM 2.5 . This study uses an electrospinning technique to prepare high-efficiency polyvinylidene fluoride/graphene oxide/polyimide nanofiber membranes. These composite nanofiber membranes demonstrate high filtration efficiency (99.6%), low pressure drop (123 Pa), remarkable thermal stability (450 °C), and excellent mechanical strength (7 MPa). Considering the advantages, these highly efficient nanofiber membranes can find advanced applications in industrial and civil infrastructures.

Abstract:Current global emergencies, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and particulate matter (PM) pollution, require urgent protective measures. Nanofibrous air filter membranes that can capture PM0.3 and simultaneously help in preventing the spread of COVID-19 are essential. Therefore, a highly efficient nanofibrous air filter membrane based on amphiphilic poly(vinylidene fluoride)-graft-poly(oxyethylene methacrylate) (PVDF-g-POEM) double comb copolymer was fabricated using atomic transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and electrospinning. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis were employed to successfully characterize the molecular structure of the fabricated amphiphilic PVDF-g-POEM double comb copolymer. The nanofibrous air filter membrane based on amphiphilic PVDF-g-POEM double comb copolymer achieved a low air resistance of 4.69 mm H2O and a high filtration efficiency of 93.56 % due to enhanced chemical and physical adsorption properties.

Abstract:The development of high-performance, fully biodegradable air filtration materials has become a current research hotspot owing to their significant applications in environmental and personal protection; however, an inherent contradiction exists between the pressure drop and filtration efficiency of existing filter materials. To introduce the slippage effect into nanofiber membranes, a multiscale-structured air filtration material comprising scaffold fibers (200 nm) and functional fibers (32 nm) with superior slippage effect properties is designed using the COMSOL software to increase interfiber spacing. Ultrafine polylactic acid nanofibers (32 +/- 5 nm) doped with polymethylhydrosiloxane are designed and fabricated by electrospinning. A multiscale nanofiber structure is engineered by adjusting the diameters of various spinning units to effectively reconcile the trade-off between filtration efficiency and resistance. The membrane exhibits a small pore size (0.62 mu m), high porosity (93.21%), highly hydrophobicity (water contact angle 144.8 degrees), high PM0.3 removal efficiency (99.99%), low air resistance (68.23 Pa), and a PM0.3 filtration efficiency for PM0.3 of 95.62% after static charge decay treatment. This membrane material also exhibits complete biodegradability and filtration stability for 12 h after PM interception (>99.0%). This work provides insights into the application of polylactic acid nanofibers in fields requiring high-precision protection and filtration materials.

Abstract:Particulate matter (PM) pollution garners a worldwide concern and causes a tremendous health risk to individuals in public regions. To cope with the polluted circumstances and emerging diseases, nanofibrous membranes have been regarded as an ideal medium to balance the inherent trade-off between PM capture ability and air permeability. Even though polystyrene holds enormous potential in charge storage for mechanical filtration of PM by the electrostatic effect, its interception performance is restricted due to the smooth surface and the inferior polarity of molecules. In this work, an electrospun nanofibrous composite membrane with protrusions consisting of epoxide-modified polystyrene and carbon aerogel has been fabricated for effective PM2.5 filtration, which possesses a low airflow resistance and high removal capability. The hydrophobic and breathable nanofibrous layer could avert the accumulation of moisture to damage the nanofibers. This nanofibrous composite membrane has demonstrated a positive surface potential of similar to 1.9 kV in favor of attracting PM2.5. Benefiting from the coupling effect of protrusion structure, polar functional groups, and Coulomb force, the obtained composite membrane achieves a low-pressure drop of 28 Pa and a quality factor of 0.115 Pa-1 through physical sieving and electrostatic adsorption. The hierarchical nanofiber medium exhibits considerable promise for PM filtration application.

Abstract:The incidence of many diseases is closely related to air pollution. Suspended particulate matter of different sizes represents a major source of environmental pollution. Fine particles, especially ultrafine particles smaller than 2.5 mu m, might be more harmful to human health because of their extremely small size, which enables them to penetrate human lungs and bronchi and makes them difficult to filter out. Therefore, the fatal risks associated with PM call for the development of air purification materials with high efficiency and low resistance. In this study, poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) and polycaprolactone were used to prepare nanofibrous membranes suitable for the efficient capture of particulate matter formed in haze-fog episodes, especially particles smaller than 0.5 mu m. The present nanofibrous membranes exhibit superior filtration efficiency for particulate matter, with a much lower pressure drop compared to typical commercial microfiber air filters. Thanks to the combination of small pore size, high porosity, and robust mechanical properties, the poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)/polycaprolactone (6:4) composite membrane exhibits a high filtration efficiency of 97.81% and a low pressure drop of 181 Pa. These favorable features, combined with the easy availability and biocompatibility of the component materials, highlight the promising potential of the present nanofibrous membranes for the development of personal wearable air purifiers.

Abstract:The PP/PVDF‐HFP/MIL‐53(Fe) composite nanofiber membrane with exceptional air filtration and dye photocatalytic properties were prepared via electrospinning method. In this paper, a high‐performance composite nanofiber membrane with excellent air filtration and dye degradation properties was prepared by incorporating MIL‐53(Fe) nanoparticles into the electrospinning solution. The results showed that the filtration efficiency for PM2.5 of the PP/PVDF‐HFP/MIL‐53(Fe) composite nanofiber membrane reached up to 99.3% with the addition of 2 wt% MIL‐53(Fe). Moreover, the composite nanofiber membrane exhibited steady filtration efficiency across different parameters, including air velocity, PM2.5 concentration, and extended testing time. Furthermore, the incorporation of MIL‐53(Fe) significantly enhanced the removal efficiency of the composite nanofiber membrane toward Rh B, resulting in a remarkable 91% removal rate. The polymer/MOF composite nanofiber membranes prepared by simple and cheap electrospinning technology have a wide range of practical applications in the field of environmental protection. Highlights PPM composite nanofiber membrane was prepared via electrospinning method. MIL‐53(Fe) nanoparticles were introduced to PPM composite nanofiber membrane. PPM composite nanofiber membrane showed excellent removal efficiency for PM2.5. PPM composite nanofiber showed a good removal performance for RhB in solution.

Abstract:Abstract Highly permeable particulate matter (PM) can carry various bacteria, viruses and toxics and pose a serious threat to public health. Nevertheless, current respirators typically sacrifice their thickness and base weight for high-performance filtration, which inevitably causes wearing discomfort and significant consumption of raw materials. Here, we show a facile yet massive splitting eletrospinning strategy to prepare an ultrathin, ultralight and radiative cooling dual-scale fiber membrane with about 80% infrared transmittance for high-protective, comfortable and sustainable air filter. By tailoring antibacterial surfactant-triggered splitting of charged jets, the dual-scale fibrous filter consisting of continuous nanofibers (44 ± 12 nm) and submicron-fibers (159 ± 32 nm) is formed. It presents ultralow thickness (1.49 μm) and base weight (0.57 g m −2 ) but superior protective performances (about 99.95% PM 0.3 removal, durable antibacterial ability) and wearing comfort of low air resistance, high heat dissipation and moisture permeability. Moreover, the ultralight filter can save over 97% polymers than commercial N95 respirator, enabling itself to be sustainable and economical. This work paves the way for designing advanced and sustainable protective materials.

Abstract:In order to reduce the possible harm caused by air pollution, excellent personal protective materials are attracting more and more attention. Therefore, the research of multifunctional materials that can filter particulate matter (PM) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) simultaneously is of great significance. In addition, in cold weather, water vapor in the exhaled gas condenses into small droplets inside the respirator causing uncomfortable feeling of dampness. Herein, we prepared several types of cyclodextrin-containing Janus nanofibrous porous membranes by electrospinning, which can efficiently filter PM of different sizes in the air, effectively adsorb VOCs, and orientate moisture from exhaled gas to the outside of the membranes to provide a dry and comfortable environment. These advantageous features, combined with the cheap price and easy availability of component materials and low respiratory resistance, highlight the great potential of these Janus nanofibrous porous membranes in the development of personal wearable air purifiers.

Abstract:The recent pandemic of COVID-19 makes personal protective facial masks in high demand. Melt-blown or electrospun nanofibers are considered to be ideal air filter materials for resisting virus-containing fine aerosol particle, eliminating particulate matter (PM) air pollution, and protecting public health. For the commercial micro/nanofiber membranes, the general strategy for improving filtration efficiency is to simply increase the base weight. However, the influence of the base weight on overall filtration performance of air filters is usually ignored, which always leads to large pressure drop and poor breathing comfort. Here, a fabrication process using the electrospinning method with phase separation of charged droplets is reported for the thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) nanofiber/net membranes based air filters. The average pore areas of TPU nanofiber/nets can be tunable from 0.6504 mu m(2) to 0.0083 mu m(2) via the incorporation of different Li+ ion concentrations. The optimized TPU nanofiber/net membranes based air filter demonstrates the attributes of high PM0.1 removal efficiency up to 97.08%, similar to 58 Pa pressure drop, 0.061 Pa-1 quality factor, and good optical transparency with the only 6 g.m(-2 )base weight, which is ground-breaking compared with the existing micro/nanofiber membrane based air filters for ultrafine particle filtration.
MOF-based Fibrous Membranes Adsorb PM Efficiently and Capture Toxic Gases Selectively

Abstract:Air pollution is harmful to the functioning of the lungs, heart, and brain even at low concentrations of particle matter (PM) and toxic gases. Purification methods and materials have made tremendous progress to improve the purity of air to adhere to national quality standards. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have an excellent gas adsorption capacity due to their high specific surface area and porous structure, but the intrinsic fragility of MOF crystals limits their application. In this study, we selected appropriate organic ligands to prepare MOF-surface-grown fibrous membranes using an electrospinning technique, which have an excellent ability to adsorb PM and capture toxic gases selectively. The efficiency of the MOF-surface-grown fibrous membranes to remove PM reached 99.99%, even for fine PM. More importantly, under low partial pressure and complex gas composition conditions, the fibrous membrane was able to selectively adsorb SO2. The concentration of SO2 dropped from 7300 ppb to 40 ppb. Interestingly, the MOF-surface-grown fibrous membrane had a higher purification capacity toward O-3 than toward SO2. The concentration of O-3 rapidly dropped from 3000 ppb to 7 ppb, which was far below national air quality standards (81 ppb). The MOF-surface-grown fibrous membrane was able to adsorb toxic atmospheric gases selectively, while not being influenced by the presence of other gases, such as CO2 and O-2. MOF-based fibrous membranes prepared using a simple and inexpensive electrospinning technique have wide potential for practical use in the field of environmental protection and air purification.

Abstract:Particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) has become a public hazard to people’s lives and health. Traditional melt-blown membranes cannot filter dangerous particles due to their limited diameter, and ultra-fine electrospinning fibers are vulnerable to external forces. Therefore, creating highly efficient air filters by using an innovative technique and structure has become necessary. In this study, a combination of polypropylene (PP) melt-blown and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/zeolite imidazole frameworks-8 (ZIF-8) electrospinning technique is employed to construct a PP/PVA/ZIF-8 membrane with a hierarchical fibrous structure. The synergistic effect of hierarchical fibrous structure and ZIF-8 effectively captures PM2.5. The PP/PVA composite membrane loaded with 2.5% loading ZIF-8 has an average filtration efficacy reaching as high as 96.5% for PM2.5 and quality factor (Qf) of 0.099 Pa−1. The resultant membrane resists 33.34 N tensile strength and has a low pressure drop, excellent filtration efficiency, and mechanical strength. This work presents a facile preparation method that is suitable for mass production and the application of membranes to be used as air filters for highly efficient filtration of PM2.5.

Abstract:Particulate matter (PMs) from combustion emissions (traffic, power plant, and industries) and the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic have recently enhanced the development of personal protective equipment against airborne pathogens to protect humans’ respiratory system. However, most commercial face masks still cannot simultaneously achieve breathability and high filtration of PMs, bacteria, and viruses. This study used the electrospinning method with polyimide (PI) and polyethersulfone (PES) solutions to form a nanofiber membrane with low-pressure loss and high biocompatibility for high-efficiency bacteria, viruses, and nano-aerosol removal. Conclusively, the optimized nano-sized PI/PES membrane (0.1625 m2/g basis weight) exhibited conspicuous performance for the highest filtration efficiency towards PM from 50 to 500 nm (99.74 %), good filter quality of nano-aerosol (3.27 Pa−1), exceptional interception ratio against 100-nm airborne COVID-19 (over 99 %), and non-toxic effect on the human body (107 % cell viability). The PI/PES nanofiber membrane required potential advantage to form a medical face mask because of its averaged 97 % BEF on Staphylococcus aureus filiation and ultra-low pressure loss of 0.98 Pa by referring ASTM F2101–01. Abstract:Development of water‐soluble polymer air filtration materials attracts considerable attentions due to their environmentally friendly performance and high efficiency, but the balance of mechanical strength, efficiency and pressure drop still is a severe challenge. Focusing on this issue, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), bamboo activated carbon (BAC) and sodium lignosulfonate (Ls) were combined to construct an electrospinning system with two filtration functions. In the PVA@Ls@BAC system, the 3D network constructed by the electrospun PVA based nanofibrous could effectively intercept PM2.5, and the introduced Ls enhanced the mechanical strength of PVA nanofibrous due to its good rigidity. In addition, the added negatively charged BAC facilitated the electrostatic adsorption of PM2.5 while also improved the heat resistance of the system. Moreover, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was introduced to enhance the water resistance of the system. The resulting electrospun PVA@Ls@BAC@PDMS composite nanofibrous air filtration membrane exhibited excellent air filtration performance (98.67%), water repellency (123.7° of WCA), and reusable performance, as well as having good mechanical property and the tensile fracture strain reaching 112%. Because of its good performance and simple preparation process, the electrospun PVA@Ls@BAC@PDMS composite nanofibrous air filtration membrane has great application space.
