Abstract:Air pollution is currently a huge threat to human health, which leads to heavy demand for efficient air filters for filtration. Among which, ultrafine particles (UFPs, diameter less than 100 nm) can especially result in more severe health diseases. Here, a scalable metal-organic framework (MOF)-based nanofiber filter for high-efficiency particles ranged from 15 nm to 10 μm removal with facile and rapid one-step fabrication is originally presented. Note that the proposed strategy is only applicable for MOFs that do not require heating during synthesis. The MOF-filter has a high filtration efficiency of 99.1% for UFPs. For particle with size down to 15 nm, the filter also exhibits remarkable removal efficiency of 98.8%. The related particle removal mechanisms for the MOF composite filter were studied systematically. Furthermore, the durability and cleanability of MOF-filter were also validated. This work may shed light on the development of nanofibrous heterostructures for high-efficient nanoparticles removal, which hold great promise for reducing health risks.

Abstract:Ultrafine dust and acid polar gas species (SO2, NOx, H2S, etc.) in the atmosphere have severe effects on human health. They are the most important indices for air quality evaluation. In this work, we developed a multifunctional, metal organic framework (MOF: UiO-66-NH2) and carbon nanotube (CNT)-modified filter for efficient ultrafine dust removal and acid gas adsorption. A thin layer of amine-functionalized CNTs was used to construct network skeletons on a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) substrate and acted as an intermediate between the porous MOF nanoparticles and the PTFE substrate. The pore size of the filter was successfully regulated from 5.1 to 2.1 μm while the modified filter still had a high gas permeability of up to 402 m3 m−2 h−1 kPa−1. This well-designed multifunctional filter showed an extremely high capture efficiency (99.997%) for ultrafine dust (diameter ∼0.3 μm) and SO2 adsorption capacity in dynamic filtration. Our filter with hierarchical structures is very promising for indoor air purification.

Abstract:Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown great potential in the treatment of air pollutants owing to their fascinating characteristics. This review overviews the important achievements in MOF‐related materials for both air purification and detection, with a focus on their structure–property correlations. Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs), an emerging class of porous crystalline material, are identified as a promising candidate for tackling the most formidable global challenges due to their unique and intriguing properties including well‐defined porous crystal structure, large specific surface area, and vast tunable chemical and physical property. Air pollution resulting from various toxic gases, volatile organic compounds, and fine particulate matters has posed a big threat to human health and ecological sustainability. In recent years, various MOFs are studied and shown great potential as active materials for air pollution control in both pollutant detection and air quality remediation. In this review, the most recent research progress for MOFs‐based materials for air pollution control is summarized. The discussion is categorized based on the different approaches for air quality control with a focus on the performance correlations to the structure and functionality of MOFs. In addition, the technical merits and downsides of each approach are discussed based on their application scenarios. Finally, the remaining challenges and future research directions in this field are proposed.

Abstract:Air pollution is harmful to the functioning of the lungs, heart, and brain even at low concentrations of particle matter (PM) and toxic gases. Purification methods and materials have made tremendous progress to improve the purity of air to adhere to national quality standards. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have an excellent gas adsorption capacity due to their high specific surface area and porous structure, but the intrinsic fragility of MOF crystals limits their application. In this study, we selected appropriate organic ligands to prepare MOF-surface-grown fibrous membranes using an electrospinning technique, which have an excellent ability to adsorb PM and capture toxic gases selectively. The efficiency of the MOF-surface-grown fibrous membranes to remove PM reached 99.99%, even for fine PM. More importantly, under low partial pressure and complex gas composition conditions, the fibrous membrane was able to selectively adsorb SO2. The concentration of SO2 dropped from 7300 ppb to 40 ppb. Interestingly, the MOF-surface-grown fibrous membrane had a higher purification capacity toward O-3 than toward SO2. The concentration of O-3 rapidly dropped from 3000 ppb to 7 ppb, which was far below national air quality standards (81 ppb). The MOF-surface-grown fibrous membrane was able to adsorb toxic atmospheric gases selectively, while not being influenced by the presence of other gases, such as CO2 and O-2. MOF-based fibrous membranes prepared using a simple and inexpensive electrospinning technique have wide potential for practical use in the field of environmental protection and air purification.

Abstract:Pollutant treatment is critical in modern society and often requires tedious workup and expensive facilities. By virtue of structural diversity and tunability, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown promise in pollutant control. We herein report a powerful templated freeze-drying protocol for the fabrication of multifunctional MOF hollow tubular structures for both air and liquid contaminants filtration. Various hollow tube systems (e.g.,. "Janus", "coaxial" and "cellular") are produced. Specially, a multilayer coaxial MOF hollow tube is prepared for highly efficient capture of mixed inorganic organic liquid contaminants with >94% filtration efficiency. Further, a "cellular" hollow tube with low pressure-drop (12 Pa, 10 cm s(-1)) is applied in particulate matter filtration with high efficiency (>92%). Given the rich structural and functional diversities, this protocol might bring MOFs into industrial applications to remediate environmental problems.

Abstract:Particulate matter (PM) pullution has emerged as a global concern. Herein, delignified wood functionalized with metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) was investigated for efficient PM removal. In particular, the lignin removal was realized by a deep-eutectic-solvent assisted process. By integrating three different MOFs into the porous wood matrix, wood-based filters with hierarchical structure were fabricated. The MOF particles including ZIF-8, MOF-199 and UiO-66 were deposited on the filters through in situ growth approach, thereby leading to a uniform MOF dispersion and strong wood-MOF adhesion. The ZIF-8 functionalized wood filter exhibited the highest PM removal performance, with PM2.5 and PM10 removal efficiencies of 89.8% and 91.6%, respectively. The superior PM capture ability of ZIF-8@Wood is attributed to the suitable surface property and sophisticated channels/pores. The gas transport pathways and PM capture mechanisms within wood filter were discussed in detail. This cost-effective and environmentally friendly filtration device provides a novel material platform for PM removal, and it could be extended for hazardous gas capture and volatile organic compound adsorption.

Abstract:Air filtration technology for mitigating pollution due to harmful mixtures of particulate matter (PMs) and yellow dust has been continuously improved. However, significantly small-sized airborne contaminants, such as PM2.5, and toxic gases, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), remain in the atmosphere and critically affect the human health. Therefore, the development of an integrated filtration system with fast detection and high removal efficiency toward various airborne pollutants without significant interference from airflow is required. Herein, we designed a hybrid air filtration system comprising a colorimetric multi-scale nanofiber (NF)/nanonet (NN) membrane and a metal–organic framework (MOF)-decorated mesh substrate to remove PM2.5 and toxic gases in the air. The electrospinning of a halochromic dye (bromocresol purple; BCP) with a polyacrylonitrile solution spontaneously forms spider-web-like NN networks between NFs, which significantly improves the filtration efficiency, particularly for sub-120 nm aerosol particles with a high quality factor of 0.0387 Pa−1. The BCP components in the NF/NN membrane demonstrated ultrafast and reversible colorimetric sensing properties within 5 s when exposed to 20 ppm ammonia gas. Furthermore, the adsorptive UiO-66-NH2 MOF-grown macroporous mesh contributes to the removal of acetaldehyde as well as provides an efficient membrane support with negligible increase in the pressure drop.

Abstract:Effective removal of particulate matters (PMs) from air is very important for our safe environment, health, and sustainability. In this study, isostructural (with the same topology of fcu) Zr-metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) such as UiO-66, UiO-67, and DUT-52 (with different porosity) were coated onto cotton and utilized in PM removal from air to understand the contribution of MOFs in improving the performances of air filters. Moreover, UiO-66s with different porosities were also prepared under different conditions from the same reaction mixture. Experiments to remove PMs such as PM2.5 and PM10 showed a critical role of porosity of coated MOFs in the PM removal. Or, the removal efficiency or quality factor increased linearly with the increasing surface area of all the studied MOFs, irrespective of the applied linkers (for synthesizing different MOFs) and synthesis conditions (for different porosities of UiO-66s). Therefore, this work confirms, for the first time, that the porosity of MOF is one of the most important parameters to improve the performance of air filter (to remove PMs) that is modified with coated MOFs. Moreover, we could suggest why porous materials with small pores were effective in capturing PMs (larger in size than pores of porous materials) from air.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of microporous materials that have been highlighted with fast and selective sorption of gas molecules; however, they are at least partially unstable in the scale-up process. Here, we report a rational shaping of MOFs in a scalable architecture of fiber sorbent. The long-standing stability challenge of MOFs was resolved by using stable metal oxide precursors that are subject to controlled surface oxide dissolution-growth chemistry during the Mg-based MOF synthesis. Highly uniform MOF crystals are synthesized along with the open-porous fiber sorbents networks, showing unprecedented cyclic CO2 capacities in both flue gas and direct air capture (DAC) conditions. The same chemistry enables an in situ flow synthesis of Mg-MOF fiber sorbents, providing a scalable pathway for MOF synthesis in an inert condition with minimal handling steps. This modular approach can serve both as a reaction stage for enhanced MOF fiber sorbent synthesis and as a "process-ready" separation device.
A Fluffy Dual‐Network Structured Nanofiber/Net Filter Enables High‐Efficiency Air Filtration

Abstract:Particulate matter (PM) pollution has posed a huge health and economic burden worldwide. Most existing air filters used to remove PMs are structurally monotonous, cumbersome, and inevitably suffer from the compromise between removal efficiency and air permeability; developing an advanced air filter that can overcome these limitations is of significance but highly challenging. Herein, a novel strategy to create ultrathin, high‐performance air filters based on fluffy dual‐network structured polyacrylonitrile nanofiber/nets, via a humidity‐induced electrospinning/netting technique, is reported. By tailoring the ejection and phase separation of the charged liquids, this approach causes 2D ultrafine (≈20 nm) nanonets tightly bonded with fluffy pseudo‐3D nanofiber scaffolds to form dual‐network structures, with controllable pore size and stacking density on a large scale. The resultant nanofiber/net filters possess the integrated features of small pore size (<300 nm), high porosity (93.9%), low packing density, combined with desirable surface chemistry (4.3‐D dipole moment), resulting in high‐efficiency PM0.3 removal (>99.99%), low air resistance (only <0.11% of atmosphere pressure), and promising long‐term PM2.5 purification. The synthesis of such materials may provide new insights into the design and development of high‐performance filtration and separation materials for various applications.

Highly Improved Performance of Cotton Air Filters in Particulate Matter Removal by the Incorporation of Metal-Organic Frameworks with Functional Groups Capable of Large Charge Separation

Abstract:Currently, air contamination, especially with particulate matters (PMs), is severe in several countries. To increase the efficiency of air filters in PM removal, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs, here, Zr-MOFs, especially with functional groups (FGs) such as -NO2) were coated, after synthesis, onto cotton using covalent bonding for the first time. The removal efficiencies (REs) and quality factors (QFs) of cottons with or without MOFs were in the order: cotton < Zr-MOF/cotton < Zr-MOF-NH2/cotton < Zr-MOF-NH-SO3H/cotton < Zr-MOF-NH3+Cl-/cotton < Zr-MOF-NO2/cotton. This monotonic increase in the PM removal efficiency or QF could be explained with the order of charge separation or developed charges (total, in absolute value: ∼0 to 2.0) on FGs of MOFs. Importantly, Zr-MOF-NO2 coating on cotton showed a very high increase in the performance of cotton in PM removal. QF and RE of Zr-MOF-NO2/cotton were 4.6 times and 6.2 times of the bare cotton, respectively, for PM2.5 removal, even with a very small increase in pressure drop (3 Pa or less) with MOF coating. Based on the research, it can be suggested that coating MOFs on substrates is a promising way to improve the performances of air filters for PM removal, especially when MOFs have FGs that can have large charge separation such as -NO2. This work may pave a way to utilize a functionalized MOF in the effective removal of PMs from air.

Abstract:Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides generated by anthropogenic activities are air pollutants that cause serious environmental problems and pose substantial health threats. Although established methods for emission desulfurization and denitrogenation already exist, more efficient and flexible technologies are still required. In this Review, we highlight state-of-the-art examples in which metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), an emerging class of porous sorbents, have been applied to the adsorptive removal of SO2 and NO2. MOFs can simultaneously exhibit superior adsorption capacities and exceptional selectivities for SO2 and NO2 in the presence of other flue and exhaust gases while maintaining their structural integrity. The highly crystalline nature and rich chemical functionality of MOFs have enabled the elucidation of host–guest interactions at a molecular level to afford insights and new knowledge that will inspire and inform the design of new generations of adsorbents.

Reviews of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology

Abstract:As a sort of porous material with periodic network structure, metal–organic framework (MOF) is constructed with metal ions or clusters and organic ligands. Benefiting from the adjustable channel structure, abundant unsaturated metal sites and modifiable ligands, MOF has attracted more and more attention both from science and engineering perspectives in various fields. Although their intrinsic micropores endow size-selective capability and high surface area, etc., the narrow pores limit their applications toward diffusion-control and large size species involved processes. In recent years, the construction of mixed-metal MOFs and MOF films has captured widespread interest which extend the applications of conventional MOF-based materials. In this review, the advances in the design, synthesis, and functional applications of nanomaterials derived from MOF-based porous materials are summarized. Their structural characters toward applications of pollutant removal, including heavy metals, antibiotics, dyes, and some emerging pollutants from aqueous solutions, have been demonstrated with typical reports. The subsisting challenges as well as future perspectives in this research field are also indicated.

Abstract:Air filtration has become an essential need for passive pollution control. However, most of the commercial air purifiers rely on dense fibrous filters, which have good particulate matter (PM) removal capability but poor biocidal effect. Here we present the photocatalytic bactericidal properties of a series of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their potentials in air pollution control and personal protection. Specifically, a zinc-imidazolate MOF (ZIF-8) exhibits almost complete inactivation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) (>99.9999% inactivation efficiency) in saline within 2 h of simulated solar irradiation. Mechanistic studies indicate that photoelectrons trapped at Zn+ centers within ZIF-8 via ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT) are responsible for oxygen-reduction related reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, which is the dominant disinfection mechanism. Air filters fabricated from ZIF-8 show remarkable performance for integrated pollution control, with >99.99% photocatalytic killing efficiency against airborne bacteria in 30 min and 97% PM removal. This work may shed light on designing new porous solids with photocatalytic antibiotic capability for public health protection.

Reviews of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology

Abstract:Various novel nanomaterials have been successfully designed and used for the extraction and analysis of environmental contaminants. Metal–organic framework materials (MOFs) with excellent performance have been widely used for the detection and adsorption of environmental pollutants. However, considerable effort is still needed before the broad practical applications of MOFs in the field of environmental safety due to challenges in the design of smart materials resulting from the complexity of environments and emerging contaminants. In this work, the following were summarized and highlighted: (1) development of MOF-based sensors with good performance in the detection of contaminants; (2) pollutant adsorption by the developed MOFs; (3) challenges and perspective on the practical applications of novel MOFs in environmental protection. Overall, the current progress of MOFs indicates promise for the effective decrease in the risk of environmental pollution. In this work, by summarizing the current scientific progress, we expect to provide clues regarding the smart design and green synthesis of new MOFs in future applications for efficient pollutant control.

Abstract:To address environmental pollution and emerging infectious diseases, highly efficient filters capable of simultaneously removing air pollutants and pathogenic microorganisms must be developed. Traditional fibrous filter materials are incapable of effectively capturing fine particles owing to their wide fibres and large pores. In this study, we used electrospinning to combine nano-spiderwebs with an ordered nanofibre membrane and construct an air-filtration material with a multi-stage pore structure that filters efficiently to deliver breathable air. The prepared composite nanofibre membrane exhibited a filtration efficiency of > 98% for particulate matter < 0.3 μm in size with a pressure drop of 95%), highlighting its considerable potential for use in air-filtration applications.

Abstract:The development of high-performance filtration materials is essential for the effective removal of airborne particles, and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) anchored to organic polymer matrices are considered to be one of the most promising porous adsorbents for air pollutants. Nowadays, most air filters are generally based on synthetic fiber polymers derived from petroleum residues and have limited functionality, so the use of MOFs in combination with nanofiber air filters has received a lot of attention. Here, a conjugated electrostatic spinning method is demonstrated for the one-step preparation of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) nanofibrous membranes with a bimodal diameter distribution and the anchoring of Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8) by the introduction of TiO2 and in situ generation to construct favorable multiscale fibers and rough structures. The prepared PLA/TZ maintained a good PM2.5 capture efficiency of 99.97%, a filtration efficiency of 96.43% for PM0.3, and a pressure drop of 96.0 Pa, with the highest quality factor being 0.08449 Pa−1. Additionally, ZIF-8 was uniformly generated on the surface of PLA and TiO2 nanofibers, obtaining a roughened structure and a larger specific surface area. An enhanced filtration retention effect and electrostatic interactions, as well as active free radicals, can be generated for the deep inactivation of bacteria. Compared with the unmodified membrane, PLA/TZ prepared antibacterial characteristics induced by photocatalysis and Zn2+ release, with excellent bactericidal effects against S. aureus and E. coli. Overall, this work may provide a promising approach for the development of efficient biomass-based filtration materials with antimicrobial properties.

An Electrically Renewable Air Filter with Integrated 3D Nanowire Networks

Abstract:Particulate matter (PM) is a major pollutant in air and filtration at the source and on‐site is an effective approach to remedy PM pollution. Filters integrated with nanowires are advantageous for their high PM removal efficiency and low resistance to airflow. In this work, carbon nanowires are directly grown as 3D networks on a 304 stainless steel mesh to form a robust air filter. The growth of the carbon nanowires is initiated by exposing the stainless steel substrate to the vapor generated from the thermal decomposition of a silicone. The stainless steel is attacked by the carbon supersaturated vapor and releases metal nanoparticles, which catalyze the growth of carbon nanowires. The air filter with integrated 3D nanowire networks achieves a high PM removal efficiency with a low pressure drop. Moreover, the filter is heat resistant and can be renewed by electrical resistive heating to burn off the captured PM. After electrical renewal treatment, the filter recovers the low pressure drop while still maintaining a high PM removal efficiency. This air filter is promising for applications requiring on‐site renewal and will be useful for treating high temperature emissions.
