Abstract:TiO2 nanotubes were prepared through the reaction of TiO2 power in high-concentration NaOH under hydrothermal conditions. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and ultraviolet visible spectrum (UV-Vis) were adopted to analyze as-prepared TiO2 nanotubes. The influence of rutile content in TiO2 powder on the structure and properties of TiO2 nanotube was investigated. The results show that pure rutile TiO2 powder is not conducive to the formation of TiO2 nanotubes, and the mixed crystal TiO2 nanotubes with uniform morphology can be prepared by TiO2 powder with anatase-rutile mixed crystal structure. With the increase of rutile content in the TiO2 powder, the rutile phase increases in as-prepared samples, and the photocatalytic activities first increase, and then decrease. The mixed crystal TiO2 nanotubes with anatase as dominant phase exhibit high photocatalytic decomposition activity to the methyl orange.

Abstract:Rutile TiO2 nanorods (NR) with different aspect ratios were synthesized using glycolic acid (GA) or lactic acid (LA) as a structure-directing agent in a hydrothermal method. Various cocatalysts were loaded on NR(GA) and NR(LA), and their O2 evolution rate was examined using K2S2O8 as a sacrificial electron acceptor. We used three different methods for loading cocatalysts such as Pt, Ag, Cu2+, Fe3+, and RuO2. Time-resolved diffuse reflectance spectra of all samples indicated that a lifetime of trapped electrons in the range of picoseconds was varied depending on the loaded cocatalysts. Pt was the best as the cocatalysts for the photocatalytic water oxidation because neither dissolution of Pt ion in the solution nor O2 evolution in the dark was observed. For comparison, we synthesized near-spherical TiO2 nanoparticles, TiO2(sol–gel), using a sol–gel method. Comparison of the lifetimes and the O2 evolution rate obtained with NR(GA), NR(LA), TiO2(sol–gel), and their Pt-loaded materials revealed that a shorter lifetime of the trapped electrons in the bulk was beneficial for getting the higher O2 evolution rate. Pt-loaded NR(GA) exhibited the highest O2 evolution rate because of the shortest lifetime of electrons in the bulk and efficient suppression of the recombination on the surface.

Abstract:TiO2 nanorod arrays (NRAs) were hydrothermally grown on transparent fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates, and were converted into nanotubes (NTAs) by hydrothermally in situ etching. Ag nanoparticles (NPLs) were sensitized on the NRAs and NTAs by a simple photodeposition approach (products were denoted as Ag-TiO2 NRAs and NTAs). The Ag-TiO2 NTAs samples possessed a large specific surface area (116 m(2) g(-1)) with Ag NPLs homogeneously dispersed among the TiO2 NTAs. The Ag-TiO2 NTAs exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic activities (98.8%) in degradation of methyl orange (MO) compared to Ag-TiO2 NRAs (92.6%), TiO2 NTAs (86.2%), and NRAs (81.7%). The enhanced photocatalytic activities can be attributed to the large specific surface area of TiO2 NTAs and strong surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Ag NPLs. In addition, Ag-TiO2 NTAs showed easy recovery feature in the recovery process and high durability in the recycling test, which was expected to be an efficient and practical photocatalyst used for waste water treatment. Abstract:Hollow TiO2 microspheres assembled with rutile mesocrystal nanorods were precipitated directly from a mixed aqueous solution of K2TiO(C2O4)2, H2O2 and HNO3 at a low temperature of 80°C. The hollow microspheres consisted of rutile mesocrystal nanorods with an average diameter of 200nm and length of 500nm. The morphology evolution upon the reaction duration suggests that the microstructure is formed through a hydrolysis–dissolution–precipitation procedure. The unique nanostructure of the hollow microspheres showed remarkable photocatalytic activity in photodegrading rhodamine B in water under the UV light illumination.

Abstract:A titania layer with ordered nanostructures is expected to be of high photocatalytic activity due mainly to its high specific surface area. In the present work, large-area films with ordered titania nanorods were deposited on titanium substrates through a solution approach, The nanorods, with the phase composition of a mixture of anatase and rutile, grew on top of a condensed anatase interlayer along mainly the rutile [001]-axis. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by decomposing rhodamine B in water and compared with the general sol-gel derived titania films and a commercial DP-25 titania coating. It is found that the as-deposited titania nanorods exhibited extremely high initial photocatalytic activity but declined to a poor value after the consumption of beneficial oxidative peroxo complexes coordinated to Ti(IV). A subsequent thermal treatment eliminated such complexes but at the same time improved the crystallinity of the titania nanorods. The photocatalytic activity of the thermally treated titania nanorods was stable and significantly higher than that of the sol-gel derived film and commercial DP-25 coating.

Abstract:Well faceted TiO2 nanorods with a regular geometric configuration were hydrothermally prepared by chemical modification of TiCl4 by ethylene glycol to slow down the reactivity of the precursor toward water. XRD patterns revealed that the as made products were pure rutile. The nanorods were highly crystalline and had an elongated prismatic shape. They grew in the [001] direction and have an aspect ratio of ∼45. The rod size can also be tailored via recipe modification. Ag loaded TiO2 was achieved upon exposure of the rutile nanorods to UV light in AgNO3 aqueous solution. The photocatalytic activities of the pure and Ag loaded TiO2 nanorods were evaluated by the photodegradation of phenol and methylene green (MG).

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) titania nanostructures assembled with ordered rutile nanorods have been fabricated via a surfactant-free and single-step solvothermal route. The effects of preparation parameters, including the reaction temperatures and the reactant concentrations, on the microstructure, optical properties and photocatalytic activity of the 3D TiO2 nanostructures were investigated. The results revealed that 3D TiO2 microspheres possessed a dandelion-like morphology composed of radially packed rutile nanorods. Increasing the reaction temperature leads to the formation of larger rutile crystals, but reduced the aspect ratios of nanorods. The morphology of products was dominated by irregular shapes with low titanium precursor concentration. The optical reflectance, absorption and photocatalytic properties of the samples were found to be significantly dependent on their morphology. 3D dandelion-like structures with tapered tips showed lower reflectance, more efficient light harvesting, higher surface area and consequently higher photocatalytic activity compared with those with flat tops and fragment of nanorod sectors. Moreover, TiO2 products prepared with 0.4M titanium precursor solution at 150 and 120°C showed better or equivalent photocatalytic activity compared with Degussa P25 owing to high light harvesting ability as well as less aggregation for the unique 3D dandelion-like hierarchical structure. The growth mechanism of the 3D dandelion-like nanostructures under various preparation conditions was also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we report on a nonaqueous synthesis of single crystalline anatase TiO2 nanorods by reaction between TiCl4 and benzyl alcohol at a low temperature of 80°C. The resulting samples were characterized with X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption, X-ray photoelectron spectrometry and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. We proposed that the TiO2 nanorods were formed through an oriented attachment mechanism. More importantly, these single crystalline anatase TiO2 nanorods exhibited significantly higher photocatalytic activities than commercial photocatalyst P25. This study provides an environmentally friendly and economic approach to produce highly active TiO2 photocatalyst.

Abstract:One dimensional (1D) single crystalline nanostructures facilitate electron transport and reduce the charge recombination; whilst nanotubular structure and a roughened surface provide more active sites as well as more opportunities for target molecules to reach the photocatalyst. As a result, TiO2 thin films with such a structural design can be anticipated to possess excellent photocatalytic activity. In this study, top opened nanowires with nanoprotrusions on the surface, which are hierarchical yet single crystalline as a whole, were synthesized by a simple acid treatment at 80°C for 36h of hydrothermally synthesized titanate nanowires, followed by a final calcination at 450°C for 1h. The hierarchical TiO2 films exhibited significantly enhanced efficiency when utilized to assist the photodegradation of rhodamine B and phenol in water under UV light illumination.
Low Temperature Synthesis and Photocatalytic Activity of Rutile TiO2 Nanorod Superstructures

Abstract:Pure rutile nanorods were synthesized by hydrolysis of TiCl4 ethanolic solution in water at 50 degrees C. The assembly of rutile nanorods could be controlled through simply changing the molar ratios of TiCl4, ethanol, and water, resulting in different superstructures with flower- or urchinlike morphologies. The resulting samples were characterized with X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen sorption, and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrum. A possible mechanism for the growth and assembly of rutile nanorod superstructures was proposed on the basis of characterization results. More importantly, we found that those low temperature synthesized superstructures showed significantly higher photocatalytic activities than commercial photocatalyst P25 on degradation of rhodamine B in water under artificial solar light. This study provides a simple and inexpensive way to prepare high active rutile nanorods superstructures photocatalysts on a large scale.
Titania Nanowires Synthesized by Thermal Oxidation of Ti Plates in Vacuum

Abstract:A simple synthesis method of titania nanowires on metallic Ti plates by thermal oxidation in vacuum was reported.The surface morphology and phase structure of the titania nanowires were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM),high resolution transmission electron microscopy(HR-TEM) and X-ray diffraction(XRD).The photocatalytic efficiency to assist decomposition of rhodamine B in water for the Ti plates subjected to the vacuum thermal oxidation for various durations were also studied.It is found that single-crystalline rutile nanowires with average diameters of 40-50 nm and lengths of 3.0-5.0 μm grow from the Ti substrate after thermal oxidation in vacuum at 750 ℃ for 5-10 h.A porous and amorphous titania thin layer on the Ti substrate,which is achieved by H2 O2-oxidation,significantly influences the nanowire growth.The photocatalytic activity evaluations reveal that the plate-like rutile formed by thermal oxidation of Ti plates in vacuum at 750 ℃ for 1 h exhibits the highest activity.Prolonged the oxidation time from 5 h to 10 h,the photocatalytic activity of the rutile nanowires increases.

Abstract:The commonly adopted approach to synthesize nanostructured TiO2 starting from titanates demands a hydrothermal environment to achieve the titanate precursor, and a subsequent high temperature calcination to fulfill the decomposition of titanates and crystallization of TiO2. In this report, hydrogen titanate aggregates were achieved by a room-temperature hydrolysis of a potassium titanyl oxalate in an aqueous H2O2 solution. The subsequent immersion in water at 80 degrees C induced the crystallization of TiO2 with a mixture of anatase nanoparticles and rutile nanorods. The anatase fraction increased with increasing immersing duration in hot water for up to 72 h. The low-temperature crystallized TiO2 powders possessed abundant surface hydroxyl groups (similar to 38 %), high specific surface area (similar to 126 m(2)/g) and pore volume (similar to 0.50 cm(3)/g). When utilized to assist photodegradation of rhodamine B in water under UV light illumination, the reaction rate constant was twice that of the commercial P25 TiO2 nanoparticles. The high photocatalytic activity is contributed to the abundant surface hydroxyl groups, high specific surface area, and the appropriate mixture of anatase nanoparticles and rutile nanorods (similar to 84:16 in weight).

Abstract:Large-scale fan-shaped rutile TiO2 nanostructures have been synthesized by means of a simple hydrothermal method using only TiCl4 as titanium source and chloroform/water as solvents. The physicochemical features of the fan-shaped TiO2 nanostructures are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected-area electron diffraction (SAED), nitrogen absorption-desorption, diffuse reflectance ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Structural characterization indicates that the fan-shaped TiO2 nanostructures are composed of several TiO2 nanorods with diameters of about 5 nm and lengths of 300-350 nm. The average pore size and BET surface area of the fan-shaped TiO2 nanostructures are 6.2 nm and 59 m(2)/g, respectively. Optical adsorption investigation shows that the fan-shaped TiO2 nanostructures possess optical band gap energy of 3.11 eV. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A novel method – inverse microemulsion has been developed not only for synthesizing low cost TiO2 nanocrystals but also for the first time making these nanocrystals self-assemble into various nanoparticles at 85°C. By variation of the volume ratios of oil to water in reverse microemulsions, the morphologies of obtained samples turned from nanoclusters to nanospherules, then grew into nanodumbbells, and became nanorods at last. It could be observed by transmission electron microscope (TEM) directly. The resulting materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM). The photocatalytic activity of TiO2 was tested with photodegradation of Methyl Orange (MO) in water. The catalyst consisting of nanorods showed the highest photocatalytic activity, which is due to its large surface area. Furthermore, the mechanism of self-assembly of TiO2 nanocrystals was discussed in detail.
Low-temperature preparation of titania nanorods through direct oxidation of titanium with hydrogen peroxide

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide solutions were used to oxidize metallic titanium at 353K for 72h to prepare crystalline titania nanorods. The products were verified by X-ray diffraction tests to be pure anatase or a mixture of anatase and rutile, depending mainly on the anions of F−, Cl−, and SO42− in the solutions. The low-temperature crystallization was supposed to proceed in a dissolution precipitation mechanism. The field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy examinations showed that the well-crystallized nanoparticles were homogeneous nanorods. Compared to the pure anatase, a much larger length/width ratio was obtained when rutile existed in the titania. This fact suggests that rutile results from a relatively lower precipitation rate, which favors also the formation of elongated particles. The absence of the strongest peak corresponding to anatase in the Raman spectra revealed that the present low-temperature prepared crystalline titania nanorods were deficient in oxygen.
Single-crystalline TiO2 Nanorods: Highly Active and Easily Recycled Photocatalysts

Abstract:Large-scale and single-crystalline anatase TiO2 nanorods were synthesized via hydrothermal reaction of H-titanate fibers. It was found that the pH plays an important role in the shape and crystal structures of the products by hydrothermal post-treatment of H-titanate fibers in acidic solutions. At pH 2–7, the pure anatase phase was formed and the samples reserved the rod-like morphology with a diameter of 20–200nm, in contrast to the formation of particles with a mixture of rutile and brookite phases at pH 0. Photocatalytic experiments indicated that the obtained single-crystalline anatase TiO2 nanorods are highly active for photodegradation of organic pollutants. Furthermore, we demonstrated that these nanorod catalysts can be easily recycled without decrease of the photocatalytic activity.
Facile Synthesis of Ni-doped TiO2ultrathin Nanobelt Arrays with Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance

Abstract:Because of the high specific surface area and enhanced charge migration, TiO2 with unique belt-like nanostructures finds promising applications in various fields such as photocatalysis, dye-sensitized solar cells, gas sensors, and Li-ion batteries. In the current study, a solution combustion procedure was firstly adopted to prepare a black water-proof precursor. The black precursor interacted with H2O2 at ambient temperature, achieving a precursor solution that is capable of fabricating hydrogen titanate (H2Ti2O5·H2O) nanobelt arrays on metallic Ti substrates at 60 °C. Subsequent calcination in air at 400 °C achieved arrays of ultrathin anatase TiO2 nanobelts of ca. 2–4 nm in thickness. The addition of nickel nitrate in the combustion solution achieved the Ni-doping into the resultant TiO2 nanobelts, which did not alter the nanobelt structure but significantly reduced the band gap from 3.2 eV to 2.9 eV. When compared with the commonly alkali-hydrothermal synthesized anatase TiO2 nanobelts, the present ultrathin nanobelts exhibited much improved photocatalytic activity when utilized to assist photodegradation of rhodamine B in water. The ultrathin nanobelt structure is believed to contribute to the high specific surface area, the much reduced charge migration path, and the enhanced charge transport along the longitudinal direction. The appropriate Ni-doping further enhanced the photocatalytic performance, because of the increased light harvesting efficiency and reduced charge recombination.

Abstract:Hierarchical flower-like H2Ti5O11 center dot 3H(2)O assembled with radial nanowires was fabricated via a template-free solution-based reaction, and was converted to TiO2 with distinct phases and morphologies by the subsequent acid-treating or annealing. The HCl treatment achieved the controllable conversion from titanate nanowires to rutile nanorods by varying the temperature and acidity. When compared with the as-synthesized titanate nanowires and the thoroughly transformed rutile nanorods, their mixtures were found to exhibit the best dye adsorption ability towards rhodamine B and methylene blue in water. The H2Ti5O11 center dot 3H(2)O nanowires decomposed in sequence to anatase and rutile after a subsequent calcination in air, via an intermediate phase of H2Ti4O9 center dot H2O. The hierarchical structure could be retained up to 800 degrees C. When utilized as photocatalysts to degrade rhodamine B in water, the 550 degrees C-calcinated powder, with mixed phases of anatase, rutile, and srilankite, demonstrated the highest photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:A mild template-free sonochemical method has been developed to synthesize mesoporous TiO2 nanorods using industrial bulk Ti powder. The sonochemical synthesis process was carried out under normal atmospheric pressure and relative low temperature. The as prepared materials contained numerous irregular olive-like nanorods aggregates. The nanorods were 8–12 nm in width and 15–100 nm in length, with the crystalline size of 10.3 nm. A mechanism of Oxidation–Shaking off–Rolling up–Shrinkage (OSRS) has been proposed to explain the crystal growth. The photocatalytic activity of the sample was 2.8 times that of P25.
