Abstract:In human history, technological revolutions have always been initiated by discoveries of novel materials, a continuous pattern from the Stone Age to modern times. Following this pattern, the avalanche of developments in nanoscience and nanotechnology in the past two decades was also triggered by the identification of novel materials such as sp2 carbons ranging from fullerenes to carbon nanotubes and graphene. It is well known that chemistry is the sole discipline that can give birth to new molecules and materials. It is this uniqueness of chemistry that allows it to serve as a cornerstone in fabricating novel materials, without which new properties could not possibly be explored. Presently, the CCME academically covers all subdisciplines in chemistry including physical, organic, inorganic, polymer, analytical, and theoretical chemistry as well as chemical biology and nuclear and radiochemistry. In 2003, the CCME was authorized under the auspices of the Ministry of Science and Technology to establish the “Beijing National Laboratory for Molecular Sciences” in collaboration with the Institute of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences – one of the first six national laboratories in China. Currently, the CCME has about 200 faculty and staff members, 700 undergraduate students, 500 graduate students, and more than 70 postdoctoral fellows. It is fully appreciated that the CCME has made significant contributions to chemistry in China, continuously trialing modern concepts in education and pushing frontiers in research. The year 2010 marks the centennial anniversary of chemical education and research at PKU, which we have taken as the incentive to organize a commemorative special issue of Advanced Materials that focuses on materials science research at the CCME. When we initially contacted Advanced Materials in March 2009, we received great support and encouragement from Dr. Peter Gregory and Dr. Martin Ottmar, and our gratitude goes to the whole editorial team of the journal. Without their enthusiastic pushing forward and professional assistance, this Special Issue could not possibly have become a reality on time. Development and application of various controlled preparation methods and characterization techniques: aluminothermal nanomaterial synthesis, chemical vapor deposition, imprinting and lithography, plasma-assisted growth, template-guided fabrication, electrochemical deposition, biomimetic colloidal synthesis, solution synthesis, spin-coating and -casting, surface and interface engineering, electron and scanning probe microscopies, spectroscopic measurements, diffraction techniques, electric probing, light scattering, and magnetic measurements. Organic and hybrid materials: fullerenes and carbon nanotubes, organic materials for organic field effect transistors, metal phthalocyanines as photoreceptors for xerography, IrIII complexes for phosphorescent emission, metal–formate coordination compounds for molecular magnetism, and enzyme-mimetic complexes for biosensors and biocatalysis. Inorganic materials: rare-earth oxides and hydrides for catalysis, elemental materials and composite silicon compounds, bio-inspired calcite crystals, biocompatible materials, transition metal oxides for light emission, alkaline and earth alkaline metal compounds, metallic alloys, and many others. While nanoscience and nanotechnology require interdisciplinary effort, all reports in this Special Issue place emphasis on the creation of new materials or structures, demonstrating how heavily chemistry is involved and how efficiently it is employed. Controllability is crucial to the role of chemistry in materials, which is the origin of the theme of this PKU Special Issue. Without control of morphologies, structures, and compositions, the prepared materials cannot display fine-tuned properties, and devices derived from them are little more than pipe dreams. Needless to say, one such Special Issue cannot possibly cover all materials science research at the CCME, and some topics had to be omitted, such as polymers or biosafety and life-science-related activities based on the materials developed. We hope to nevertheless have given an indication of the breadth and depth of materials science research at the CCME–PKU. Last but not least, we are greatly indebted to all our colleagues at the CCME who have contributed to this Special Issue. We also thank the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation, and the Ministry of Education for the financial support allowing us to celebrate this milestone in Chinese scientific history.
