Abstract:Biopolymers, such as single-stranded DNA (ssDNA), are often described as semiflexible polymers or wormlike chains. We investigated the length dependence of diffusional properties of homogeneous ssDNA (polythymine) with up to 100 nucleotides using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy. We found that the hydrodynamic radius Rh scales according to a power law, with an exponent between 0.5 and 0.7 depending on ionic strength I. With Rh being proportional to the square root of the persistence length Lp, we found that Lp approximately Im, with m=-0.22+/-0.01 for polythymine with 100 residues. For comparison, we performed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with a force field that accounts for short-range interactions in vacuum, and determined the characteristic polymer properties end-to-end distance R, radius of gyration S, and persistence length Lp of various labeled and nonlabeled polythymine derivatives. We found excellent agreement for the length dependence of simulated S and experimental Rh measured at 100 mM NaCl, revealing that electrostatic interactions are completely shielded in aqueous solution at such ionic strength. MD simulations further showed that polythymine with >approximately 30 residues can be described as a semiflexible polymer with negligible influence of the fluorescent label; and that static flexibility is limited by geometrical and steric constraints as expressed by an intrinsic persistence length of approximately 1.7 nm. These results provide a benchmark for theories and MD simulations describing the influence of electrostatic interactions on polyelectrolyte properties, and thus help to develop a complete and accurate description of ssDNA.
[Formation of Professor Mao Xiejun's Thoughts on Stomatological Education].

Abstract:Professor Mao Xiejun wrote a report about dental education of China in 1935. From 1948 to 1950, he published three articles containing the educational idea of "developing dentistry into stomatology". When he served as the director of the Faculty of Dentistry of Peking University Medical School in July 1950, he proposed to rename the Faculty of Dentistry into the Faculty of Stomatology,which were approved by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China in one month. The Chinese Medical Association established the Society of Stomatology the next year. Later, dentistry was successively changed into stomatology, and medical content was integrated into dental education, which was of great significance and far-reaching influence. During the developments of the thought of stomatological education in China, Professor Mao Xiejun evidently played a pivotal role. In this paper, the formation process of the thoughts of stomatological education related to professor Mao Xiejun's contribution is elucidated through studying the archives, personal letters, and historical documents, so as to enrich the researches on the history of stomatology in China and to facilitate better understanding and promoting the development of stomatology.

Abstract:System integrated curricula are based on organs and systems. They closely combine basic medicine theory with clinical practice, aiming to stimulate students' subjective initiative and improve their ability to analyze and solve problems. In order to implement moral education concept in the teaching process of professional courses for dental students, dental teaching teams of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine has carried out teaching reforms including constructing a stronger team of teachers, making ideological and political achievement goals of curriculum, finding out and writing ideological and political materials. Taking advantages of the various teaching forms of integrated curricula, the curriculum ideological and political education is run through the whole process of professional teaching, in order to cultivate dental talents with both ideological and humanistic ability.

Abstract:Neoplasms morphologically similar to mixed tumors and myoepitheliomas of the salivary glands, under the broad concept of myoepithelial neoplasia, have recently been defined in the skin and soft tissue; however, to date, no data have supported a shared genetic background with their salivary gland counterpart. From a large body of research, it has been well established that rearrangement of pleomorphic adenoma gene 1 (PLAG1) leads to aberrant expression of its protein and is pathogenically relevant in the development of salivary mixed tumors. On the other hand, in soft tissue lesions, compelling evidence suggests that EWSR1 is involved in a significant subset. To examine the hypothesis that there is a genetic link between these histologically similar tumors at different sites, we randomly selected 20 benign myoepitheliomas/mixed tumors of skin and soft tissue (10 cases each). Nineteen cases could be immunostained for PLAG1, of which 11 cases showed distinct nuclear staining with moderate or strong intensity in a significant number of cells. Interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization for PLAG1 was successfully performed in 11 cases (seven in skin and four in soft tissue) and was positive for gene rearrangement in eight cases (five in skin and three in soft tissue). All PLAG1‐rearranged tumors, except one, had clear‐cut ductal structures and were immunoreactive for PLAG1. In our series, tumors with PLAG1 alteration shared a common morphologic phenotype characterized by prominent tubuloductal differentiation, suggesting that myoepithelial neoplasms with genuine salivary gland‐like morphology, so‐called soft tissue/cutaneous mixed tumors, are genetically related to their salivary gland counterpart. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:The education in general dentistry is one of the important parts of continuing education in oral medicine.Strengthening the comprehensive awareness in dental practice not only improve the ability of general practioner but also lay a good foundation for whole progress of dentistry in our country.The department of general dentistry of Peking University School of Stomatology has tried some revolution on continuing education for years.In order to adapt the needs of society,we adjusted the model of our program from 2011.The refresher dentists were training not on special major,but on general concept and multi-professional skills.Facts have proved that the new education model of general dentistry worked very well.

Abstract:Humanistic education aims to promote educated people's practical and conscious activities to enhance their humanity, cultivate ideal personalities, and realize personal and social values, to develop a humanistic spirit. The advancement of higher education in China has led to the proposal to strengthen scientific and humanistic education integration. Medicine is between science and humanities, shouldering the important task of training senior medical personnel, the quality of medical students will affect the quality of future medical and health work; thus, medical students must explore and practice humanistic education. Promoting and practicing volunteerism is a specific act of constructing spiritual civilization in the whole society, and it is also considered beneficial for improving citizens' sense of responsibility and dedication. Medical students' practice of volunteerism and help in society is a precise manifestation of humanistic care. This review summarizes medical students' exploration and practice of humanistic education in volunteering.

Abstract:BACKGROUND In the dental clinical training, humanity education plays a very important role, but tutors often attach importance to the training of knowledge and practice skills, while neglecting humanity education. OBJECTIVE To facilitate treatment effect, humanity plays a very important role during clinical activity. The purpose of the study is to introduce a new way integrating the humanity sense into dental clinical practice training performed via Wechat or and Tencent meeting app. METHODS WeChat and Tencent meeting or Dingding app are applications used for regularly daily communication and learning by wifi or 4G network. We carry out humanity education by Wechat or and Tecent meeting or Dingding app in dental clinical training applying a mode of "tutors briefly present cases, students discuss, and teachers give comments or implements or answers". RESULTS Students gain humanistic insights in case sharing and discussion. CONCLUSIONS Any group resolved and fulfilled goals successfully, humanity education in dental clinical training is conducted well through the WeChat, Tencent meeting and Dingding app same as any meeting activities. Related applications have also played an important role in home office, work for any team or agency, and online learning during the epidemic period of the COVID-19.

Abstract:At this point in time, the importance of medical humanities education has not been fully understood during the standardized training of residents in China. The study of medical humanities is an important facet of ophthalmology residency that needs to be strengthened. During the standardized training of ophthalmology residents, not only the medical sciences should be strengthened, but also the nature and practice of medical humanities knowledge should be enhanced in multiple aspects. Offering medically-relevant literature, history, philosophy and other courses, simulating real medical activities, being enthusiastic in popular medical science and increasing the contents of the examination in medical humanities would all be areas that would further advance the ophthalmology residency. Along with medical science education, residents will be led and trained on medical humanities as to build good medical humanistic spirit of patient care so that they may better serve patients.

Abstract:Medical talent cultivation should focus on cultivating students’ moral literacy and sense of social responsibility. Implementing humanistic education in medical teaching can help cultivate the patriotism of medical students and shape correct values. The relationship between humanities education and diagnostic teaching is close. Humanities education can provide value guidance and ideological education for diagnostic teaching. In diagnostic teaching, humanities education can be implemented effectively, helping students better clarify learning goals, better cope with challenges in future medical practice and become medical professionals with good professional ethics and social responsibility. This article explores the relationship between humanistic education and diagnostic teaching and elaborates on the practical methods of integrating humanistic education in the process of diagnostic teaching.

Abstract:Peking University School of Stomatology aimed to help students gaining much more through Problem based learning (PBL) course.Teaching plan of PBL and evaluating criteria for PBL were designed,which not only liberalized debate space for students but also control teaching quality.Results showed that the fields of students' views have been broadened.Most students believed that PBL was very beneficial for them.While examine scores students got after PBL teaching were not inferior to those they obtained in traditional teaching way.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel line-integral representation of the physical-optics radiation integral from a perfectly conducting surface illuminated by a finite number of electric Hertzian dipoles. By introducing a new dyad potential, this novel representation guarantees the integrand free from singularities along the computational path. As such, it can be easily integrated for arbitrary positions of the source and observation points. Conversely, for certain situations of the Hertzian dipole being on the cone connecting the observation point to the scattering rim, the existing formulations exhibit a nonremovable singularity in their integrands. This will lead to invalid or inaccurate results. Meanwhile, for near-singular integration region, time-consuming computations need to be performed by utilizing a variable mesh integration. The efficiency in numerical calculation is the main objective of this kind of approach, and the time reduction performance would be improved by our singularity-free formula. The line-integral representation offers an alternative method to rapidly solve the scattering problem as it is usually more efficient than producing the same result in conventional surface-integral. Simple and complicated numerical examples are included to demonstrate the beneficial effect of the proposed expressions in terms of efficiency and accuracy.

Abstract:Today, there is greater awareness on the association between oral diseases and respiration diseases after the outbreak of COVID-19. However, confusion regarding the oral health management and medical risk prevention for patients with chronic airway diseases has been remained among dental clinicians. Therefore, the dental experts of the Fifth General Dentistry Special Committee, Chinese Stomatological Association, combined with the experts of respiratory and critical care medicine, undertook the formation of consensus on the oral health management of patients with chronic airway diseases in order to help dental clinicians to evaluate medical risks and make better treatment decision in clinical practice. In the present consensus report, the relationship of oral diseases and chronic airway diseases, the oral health management and the treatment recommendations of patients with chronic airway diseases are provided.

Abstract:Objectives To evaluate the possibility of integrating dental hygienists (DHs) into the dental field in China, and investigate its effectiveness on improving patients' knowledge, attitudes, self‐care behaviours as well as their periodontal status. Methods A hospital‐based oral hygiene training program was developed at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital's (SRRSH) Dental Clinic with the support of two registered DHs from Loma Linda University in California. A questionnaire evaluating oral health knowledge, attitudes and behaviours was conducted in patients who visited SRRSH's Dental Clinic. Scores of oral health knowledge and proportions of positive oral health attitudes and favourable self‐care behaviours were estimated between patients treated and not treated by DHs (DH group and NDH group). The improvements in patients' periodontal conditions following non‐surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) administered by DHs at the Dental Clinic of SRRSH, as assessed through the measurement of periodontal pocket depths and the incidence of bleeding upon probing. Results Patients in DH group exhibited relatively better results in several aspects of oral health knowledge, attitudes and behaviours, compared to those in NDH group. Moreover, NPST performed by DHs significantly improved the periodontal status of the patients, with a remarkably reduction in periodontal pocket depth and bleeding on probing. Conclusions Integrating DHs into SRRSH's Dental Clinic showed effectiveness in enhancing patients' oral health knowledge, attitudes, behaviours and succeeded in improving patients' periodontal status. This program demonstrated that incorporating DHs into dental care team is not only practical but also enhances the value of the dental workforce in China.
