Abstract:Biopolymers, such as single-stranded DNA (ssDNA), are often described as semiflexible polymers or wormlike chains. We investigated the length dependence of diffusional properties of homogeneous ssDNA (polythymine) with up to 100 nucleotides using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy. We found that the hydrodynamic radius Rh scales according to a power law, with an exponent between 0.5 and 0.7 depending on ionic strength I. With Rh being proportional to the square root of the persistence length Lp, we found that Lp approximately Im, with m=-0.22+/-0.01 for polythymine with 100 residues. For comparison, we performed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with a force field that accounts for short-range interactions in vacuum, and determined the characteristic polymer properties end-to-end distance R, radius of gyration S, and persistence length Lp of various labeled and nonlabeled polythymine derivatives. We found excellent agreement for the length dependence of simulated S and experimental Rh measured at 100 mM NaCl, revealing that electrostatic interactions are completely shielded in aqueous solution at such ionic strength. MD simulations further showed that polythymine with >approximately 30 residues can be described as a semiflexible polymer with negligible influence of the fluorescent label; and that static flexibility is limited by geometrical and steric constraints as expressed by an intrinsic persistence length of approximately 1.7 nm. These results provide a benchmark for theories and MD simulations describing the influence of electrostatic interactions on polyelectrolyte properties, and thus help to develop a complete and accurate description of ssDNA.

Abstract:Modern stomatological education in China has developed into its present form over a period of 90 years. The College of Stomatology of the Fourth Military Medical University, as the only one of its kind in the Chinese army, has been playing an essential role in training professionals and guaranteeing the dental health of all officers and soldiers in the army. Its education system and five-year curricula designed for undergraduates were introduced in relation to those of China's first-rate stomatological colleges. This paper also examines in detail the problems of the current curriculum and holds up the prospect of a further improved curriculum to meet the ever increasing demand for qualified professionals in the military service.

Abstract:Professor Mao Xiejun wrote a report about dental education of China in 1935. From 1948 to 1950, he published three articles containing the educational idea of "developing dentistry into stomatology". When he served as the director of the Faculty of Dentistry of Peking University Medical School in July 1950, he proposed to rename the Faculty of Dentistry into the Faculty of Stomatology,which were approved by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China in one month. The Chinese Medical Association established the Society of Stomatology the next year. Later, dentistry was successively changed into stomatology, and medical content was integrated into dental education, which was of great significance and far-reaching influence. During the developments of the thought of stomatological education in China, Professor Mao Xiejun evidently played a pivotal role. In this paper, the formation process of the thoughts of stomatological education related to professor Mao Xiejun's contribution is elucidated through studying the archives, personal letters, and historical documents, so as to enrich the researches on the history of stomatology in China and to facilitate better understanding and promoting the development of stomatology.

Abstract:The number of patients with periodontal disease in China is large, and the ratio of doctors to patients is seriously imbalanced, especially in the insufficient number of periodontal specialists and periodontal teachers. Strengthening the cultivation of professional postgraduates in periodontology can effectively solve this problem. This paper summarizes the experiences of Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology in the teaching of periodontal postgraduate students for more than 30 years, in cluding teaching objectives formulation, teaching resources allocation and enhancement of the quality control system of clinical teaching, for ensuring that the periodontal professional postgraduates could reach the expected level after training. This formed the current "Peking University Model". There are both opportunities and challenges in clinical teaching of periodontal postgraduates in domestic stomatology community. The authors hope that the continuous exploration and improvement of this teaching system will promote the vigorous development of clinical teaching for the postgraduates majoring in periodontology in China.

Abstract:The education in general dentistry is one of the important parts of continuing education in oral medicine.Strengthening the comprehensive awareness in dental practice not only improve the ability of general practioner but also lay a good foundation for whole progress of dentistry in our country.The department of general dentistry of Peking University School of Stomatology has tried some revolution on continuing education for years.In order to adapt the needs of society,we adjusted the model of our program from 2011.The refresher dentists were training not on special major,but on general concept and multi-professional skills.Facts have proved that the new education model of general dentistry worked very well.

Abstract:With the rapid development of China's higher medical education, traditional teaching methods could not adapt to the needs of modern teaching. It is urgent to reform the teaching model. The tutorial system of undergraduate students which has a variety of forms is an important method of medical education. The implementation and significance of a new stomatological medical tutorial system-the three-step tutorial system model is explored in this paper. The aim of this exploration is to build a new model of stomatological education. And some preliminary ways and ideas are proposed to solve the problems which may appear during the implementation.

Abstract:COVID-19 highlights the lack of interdisciplinary medical talents. The international history of medical education shows the urgent need of high-level interdisciplinary medical talents. Anchoring the goal to develop a global center of talents and highland of innovation, this article takes medical education of Zhejiang University as an example, focusing on and exploring the training mode of high-level interdisciplinary medical talents in the new era. It includes: firstly, optimizing the training mode of eight-year program for medical doctors with non-medical bachelor degree followed with complete education for a medical doctorate that innovates the curriculum system of clinical medicine; secondly, creating the training system of postdoctor of clinical medicine and integrating medical resources that include high-quality talents and health care system, in order to build a high-quality teaching staff with a interdisciplinarity background and innovative bases. It not only strengthens the residents' competency and frontier creativity, but also ensures the sustainable development of interdisciplinary medical talents. The reform of training mode, curriculum system, teaching staff and clinical teaching bases all contribute to the goal of building a country with interdisciplinary talents that serve the frontier of science and technology in the world, the major needs of the country and people's health in the new era.

Abstract:We studied 521 serum samples collected in 1987-88 in the Highland Plateaux and the East coast of Madagascar, two areas presenting different levels of malaria endemicity. Total anti-Plasmodium falciparum antibodies were investigated by an indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA). Antibodies directed to the ring-infected erythrocyte surface antigen (RESA) were investigated by a modified IFA (MIFA). Results were analysed in regards to malariological parameters (parasite and splenomegaly rates) collected simultaneously. IFA appears as a good epidemiological tool as it closely parallels the classical malariological parameters. In selected studies, the presence of P. falciparum parasites in blood was less frequent in individuals presenting with anti-RESA antibody, as detected by MIFA, than in the other individuals were consistently lower in subjects with anti-RESA antibody than in others.

Abstract:Objective:To explore the attitude and behavior of scientific research in professional postgraduates majoring in stomatology in Peking University, proposing suggestions to improve the quality of scientific research training.Methods:150 professional postgraduates of stomatology including the 8-year program stomatological students (the postgraduate stage) of Peking University School of Stomatology were involved in the survey, information including the types of and attitudes to scientific research, the evaluation of research environments, the understanding of the relationship with their mentors, and the expected working institutions after graduation was collected by questionnaires.Results:A total number of 131 valid questionnaires were collected, with an effective rate of 87.3%. In terms of the type of research work, 70 (53.4%) were engaged in basic research and 30 (22.9%) in clinical research. In terms of attitudes towards scientific research training, 69 (52.7%) respondents agreed that scientific research and clinical practice promoted each other. The Likert scores of scientific research interest, ability, and pressure were 3.13 ± 0.84, 3.04 ± 0.84, and 4.14±0.71. The evaluation of laboratory conditions (3.30±0.92), scientific research funding (3.54±1.06), scientific research atmosphere (3.89±0.85), and reward and punishment mechanisms (3.82±0.76) were positive. The evaluations of scientific research training courses (2.89±0.88) and scientific training time (2.79±0.94) were negative. The average score of the rapport level between postgraduates and their mentors was 4.29±0.77, and 111 respondents (84.7%) had a correct understanding of the guiding relationship. Sixty-six respondents (50.4%) expected to engage in clinical and scientific research in stomatological schools and 61 (46.6%) expected to engage in clinical work only, after graduation.Conclusions:The scientific research for graduate students of stomatology in Peking University is mainly basic research, and the research pressure is relatively high. It is recommended to choose research topics in combination with clinical practice, clarify the significance of scientific research, optimize the scientific research environment and facilities, strengthen the tailored guidance of mentors, and to fulfill the " holistic training (Three All-round Education)" in professional postgraduate training.
Exploration of trans-disciplinary teaching methods in medical education

Abstract:The new medicine is an important education strategy put forward by the Ministry of Education of China to cultivate outstanding medical talents and scientists. Trans-disciplinary integration and mutual penetration are important connotation to realize the construction of the specialty. This paper takes the combination of medical and engineering as an example to explore trans-disciplinary teachings, and suggests two teaching methods of the trans-disciplinary cross knowledge based on clinical problems and the clinical optimal solution analysis based on the knowledge from different disciplines. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 150 junior and senior students majoring in clinical medicine at Zhejiang University who joined the course of the clinical application of medical instruments. The results showed that 95.3% (143/150) students thought that this course could better help them learn relevant clinical medicine courses, 93.3% (140/150) students thought that this course was highly analytical, and 88.7% (133/150) students thought that this course could develop solutions to problems. The conclusion is that adding trans-disciplinary education can better promotes the study of other medical knowledge.

Abstract:Neoplasms morphologically similar to mixed tumors and myoepitheliomas of the salivary glands, under the broad concept of myoepithelial neoplasia, have recently been defined in the skin and soft tissue; however, to date, no data have supported a shared genetic background with their salivary gland counterpart. From a large body of research, it has been well established that rearrangement of pleomorphic adenoma gene 1 (PLAG1) leads to aberrant expression of its protein and is pathogenically relevant in the development of salivary mixed tumors. On the other hand, in soft tissue lesions, compelling evidence suggests that EWSR1 is involved in a significant subset. To examine the hypothesis that there is a genetic link between these histologically similar tumors at different sites, we randomly selected 20 benign myoepitheliomas/mixed tumors of skin and soft tissue (10 cases each). Nineteen cases could be immunostained for PLAG1, of which 11 cases showed distinct nuclear staining with moderate or strong intensity in a significant number of cells. Interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization for PLAG1 was successfully performed in 11 cases (seven in skin and four in soft tissue) and was positive for gene rearrangement in eight cases (five in skin and three in soft tissue). All PLAG1‐rearranged tumors, except one, had clear‐cut ductal structures and were immunoreactive for PLAG1. In our series, tumors with PLAG1 alteration shared a common morphologic phenotype characterized by prominent tubuloductal differentiation, suggesting that myoepithelial neoplasms with genuine salivary gland‐like morphology, so‐called soft tissue/cutaneous mixed tumors, are genetically related to their salivary gland counterpart. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:The 8 year stomatology education is a new educational system in China, which is divided into two stages: the first 5-years for preclinical, clinical medicine and basic dentistry training and the second 3-years for resident dentist training. Students are required to complete a clinical based research study in the last year. Ability oriented education is emphasized. Doctoral Degree of Medical Science (Stomatology) is granted for students who finish all courses and meet all requirements. Two classes of students already graduated from our school. Their performances met the original purposes of this program which is to not only train a future dentist but also help them to know the fundamentals of research skill as well as social and culture knowledge to prepare them to become an important addition to the society.

Abstract:In the information age, teaching methods are undergoing tremendous changes, and the traditional teaching methods are difficult to draw students' attention. As the core course of stomatology, oral histopathology is an important foundation for oral students. Along with the rapid development of medical science, it is imperative to deepen the reform of teaching. This article discussed the diversified teaching methods conducted in oral histopathology course in Zhejiang University School of Stomatology in the past 10 years with the core teaching theory of "learning before teaching" including the exploration design course, case based learning, journal club, etc. Diversified teaching methods activated students' subjective initiative, which laid a foundation for the next stage of clinical study, and provided a guiding framework for the future teaching reforms.

Abstract:Pre-clinical education is the targeted teaching and guidance to the medical students be- fore they start clinical practice. In order to improve the clinical practice teaching effect, pre-clinical educa- tion for the stomatological undergraduate students was carried out in recent years in Tongji University School of Stomatology. It focused on the following strategies: developing personal clerkship schedule, practicing problem-based learning teaching method, in vitro teeth practicing and evaluation, simulated clinical train- ing, cultivating students' patient-centered sense of service and responsibility. These strategies helped to cultivate the students' good learning habits and laid a good foundation for their clinical practice which has been proved to have better results in clinical practice teaching.
