Abstract:Austenite stainless steels with gradient nanostructure exhibit exceptional combination of high yield strength and high ductility. In order to describe their structure-property relation, a theoretical model is proposed in this work, in which the depth-dependent bimodal grain size distribution and nanotwin-nanograin composite structure are taken into account. The micromechanical model and the Voigt rule of mixture are adopted in deriving the constitutive relations. Furthermore, the evolution and influence of the nano/micro cracks/voids are considered for predicting the failure strain. The numerical results based on the theoretical model agree well with experimental results in terms of the yield strength, ductility, and the strain hardening rate, demonstrating that the proposed model can well describe the mechanical properties of gradient-nanostructured austenite stainless steels. We further study the variations of the yield strength and ductility of gradient-nanograined and gradient-nanotwinned 304 stainless steels with different distribution of grain size and twin spacing along the depth, which shows that the present model can be applied to optimize the combination of strength and ductility of the gradient-nanostructured metals by tuning depth-dependent distributions of microstructures.

Abstract:Gradient microstructure design has been found to be an effective approach to significantly produce the utmost advanced structural metallic materials, which have a signature in mechanical characteristic of strength-ductility-hardenability combination. In this work, a physical theory and mechanism-based numerical model are developed for sophisticatedly designing the gradient microstructured metals. It considers the gradient distribution of grain size, twin, martensite and austenite in a metallic alloy. The numerical results are validated through experiments. The mechanical performance of high strength, large ductility and considerable hardenability is achieved and their trade-off is successfully overcome. (C) 2020 Acta Materialia Inc. Achieving High Strength and High Ductility in Nanostructured Metals: Experiment and Modelling

Abstract:Engineering nanostructures in metallic materials such as nanograins and nanotwins can promote plastic performance significantly. Nano/ultrafine-grained metals embedded in coarse grains called bimodal metals and nanotwinned polycrystalline metals have been proved to possess extensively improved yield strength whilst keeping good ductility. This paper will present an experimental study on nanostructured stainless steel prepared by surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) with surface impacts of lower strain rate (10 s−1–103 s−1) and higher strain rate (104 s−1–105 s−1). Microstructure transition has been observed from the original γ-austenite coarse grains to α′-martensite nanograins with bimodal grain size distribution for lower strain rates to nanotwins in the ultrafine/coarse grained austenite phase for higher strain rates. Meanwhile, we will further address the mechanism-based plastic models to describe the yield strength, strain hardening and ductility in nanostructured metals with bimodal grain size distribution and nanotwinned polycrystalline metals. The proposed theoretical models can comprehensively describe the plastic deformation in these two kinds of nanostructured metals and excellent agreement is achieved between the numerical and experimental results. These models can be utilized to optimize the strength and ductility in nanostructured metals by controlling the size and distribution of nanostructures.
Twin density gradient induces enhanced yield strength-and-ductility synergy in a S31254 super austenitic stainless steel

Abstract:Gradient structure (GS), as a typical heterostructure, is arousing great interest for an improved synergy between the strength and ductility which are mutually conflicting. Recently, a novel design of GS is proposed by taking the density of twins in grains, instead of common grain size, as a gradient variable, showing the key role in strain hardening by the nano-scale twin boundaries. Following this idea, here, a deformation twin-density GS was produced by means of the technique of surface mechanical attrition treatment in a S31254 super austenitic stainless steel. To be specific, the GS consisted of a central coarse-grained (CG) core, with two sides sandwiched by the gradient-structured layer (GL), where the density of deformation twins appears gradient in grains along the depth towards the CG core. The tensile tests show that as compared to CG counterpart, yield strength in GS increases 80% to 0.5 GPa, along with comparable ductility of 36%. The interrupted tensile tests show the presence of mechanical hysteresis loops during each unload-reload cycle, indicative of the generation of hetero-deformation-induced (HDI) stress during tensile deformation. Furthermore, both the HDI stress and HDI strain hardening account for a large proportion of global flow stress and forest hardening. The deformation twins and their evolutions, with the emphasis on their interaction with the dislocations, are investigated in detail by means of EBSD and TEM observations to correlate the mechanical properties. The present results shed light on the crucial role of deformation twins in the twin-density gradient for the synergistic enhancement of both strength and ductility.

Gradient Twinned 304 Stainless Steels for High Strength and High Ductility

Abstract:Gradient materials often have attractive mechanical properties that outperform uniform microstructure counterparts. It remains a difficult task to investigate and compare the performance of various gradient microstructures due to the difficulty of fabrication, the wide range of length scales involved, and their respective volume percentage variations. We have investigated four types of gradient microstructures in 304 stainless steels that utilize submicrotwins, nanotwins, nanocrystalline-, ultrafine- and coarse-grains as building blocks. Tensile tests reveal that the gradient microstructure consisting of submicrotwins and nanotwins has a persistent and stable work hardening rate and yields an impressive combination of high strength and high ductility, leading to a toughness that is nearly 50% higher than that of the coarse-grained counterpart. Ex- and in-situ transmission electron microscopy indicates that nanoscale and submicroscale twins help to suppress and limit martensitic phase transformation via the confinement of martensite within the twin lamellar. Twinning and detwinning remain active during tensile deformation and contribute to the work hardening behavior. We discuss the advantageous properties of using submicrotwins as the main load carrier and nanotwins as the strengthening layers over those coarse and nanocrystalline grains. Our work uncovers a new gradient design strategy to help metals and alloys achieve high strength and high ductility.
Static and Dynamic Mechanical Behaviors of Gradient-Nanotwinned Stainless Steel with a Composite Structure: Experiments and Modeling

Abstract:The metals with gradient nanostructures possess exceptionally superior mechanical properties. Here, the gradient-nanotwinned 304 stainless steel wires are fabricated by surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) with a range of process time. The quasi-static tensile tests and dynamic compressive tests are conducted to examine the constitutive response of gradient-nanotwinned 304 stainless steels under different loadings. The experimental measurements show that under static and dynamic loadings, their mechanical properties are closely related to the SMAT process time. With an increase in the process time, their yield strength is improved, while their ductility is weakened. Furthermore, a theoretical model is proposed to describe the static and dynamic constitutive relation of gradient nanotwinned 304 stainless steels. The micromechanical model of nanotwinned composite is developed to characterize the constitutive relation of the material with nanograins embedded in nanotwinned matrix in depth. For the constitutive relations of each phase in nanotwinned composite structure, the athermal behaviors of dislocations are only considered in describing the flow stress under the static loadings. The size-dependent athermal flow stress and rate-dependent thermal flow stress are both involved under the dynamic loadings. The theoretical simulations demonstrated that the mechanical response of gradient-nanotwinned 304 stainless steels under different loadings can be successfully characterized by the presented model. A good agreement is obtained between the numerical results and experimental measurements. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of gradient-nanotwinned 304 stainless steels are forecasted for the various distribution of twin spacing along the depth. The results in this work are helpful for optimizing the static and dynamic mechanical performance of the gradient-nanostructured metallic materials through controlling microstructural size and distribution.

Abstract:Martensite transformation and grain refinement can make austenitic stainless steel stronger, but this comes at a dramatic loss of both ductility and corrosion resistance. Here we report a novel gradient structure in 301 stainless steel sheets, which enables an unprecedented combination of high strength, improved ductility and good corrosion resistance. After producing inter-layer microstructure gradient by surface mechanical attrition treatment, the sheet was annealed at high temperature for a short duration, during which partial reverse transformation occurred to form recrystallized austenitic nano-grains in the surface layer, i.e., introducing extra intra-layer heterogeneity. Such 3D microstructure heterogeneity activates inter-layer and inter-phase interactions during deformation, thereby producing back stress for high yield strength and hetero-deformation induced (HDI) hardening for high ductility. Importantly, the recrystallized austenitic nano-grains significantly ameliorates the corrosion resistance. These findings suggest an effective route for evading the strength–ductility and strength–corrosion tradeoffs in stainless steels simultaneously.

Abstract:Under constant cumulative shear strain, three distinct gradient dislocation structures (GDS) of Ni samples were fabricated through cyclic torsion with varying amplitudes. This approach successfully achieved a synergistic balance between strength and ductility. The GDS30 sample, in particular, demonstrated a yield strength of ∼443 MPa, a tensile strength of ∼478 MPa, and a uniform elongation of approximately ∼24.5 %. A significant concentration of geometrically necessary dislocations was observed at the interfaces between coarse and fine grains in the GDS30, indicating the existence of a strain gradient. This phenomenon triggered an additional high-density dislocation strengthening effect, which contributed to the enhanced yield and ultimate tensile strengths observed in the GDS30 sample. Additionally, the GDS10 and GDS30 samples exhibit relatively large fracture dimples, indicating good fracture toughness in both cases. Our findings offer valuable insights into the design of high-performance structural materials.

Abstract:Gradient structures in engineering materials produce an impressive synergy of strength and plasticity, thereafter, have recently attracted extensive attention in the material families. Gradient structured stainless steels (SS) were prepared by surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) with different impacting velocities. The microstructures of the treated samples are characterized by gradient twin fraction and phase constituents. Quantitative relations of gradient microstructure with impacting time and mechanical properties are analyzed according to the observations of SEM, TEM, XRD, and tests of mechanical property. The processed SSs exhibited to be simultaneously stiff, strong, and ductile, which can be attributed to the co-operation of the different spatial distributions of multi-scaled structures. The formation of gradient twinned structure is resolved and the strengthening by gradient structure is explored.

Abstract:The gradient nano-grained (GNG) structure was formed on the top layer of AISI 304 in the presence of coarse grains (CG) by means of ultrasonic impact treatment (UIT). The impact velocity was 5m/s and the coverage changed from 3000% to 9000% in order to obtain the microstructure GNG/CG materials. The tensile test and small punch test (SPT) were further carried out in order to investigate the mechanical behaviors of the GNG/CG 304 at the different stress states. The results indicated that the yield strength of GNG/CG 304 obtained by tensile test and SPT increased at the small expense of ductility. The stress triaxiality T played an important role in the deformation behavior of GNG/CG 304. An increased T-value in the region of biaxial stretching of small punch specimen (T=2/3) led to an improved ductility compared with that noted in the case of uniaxial tensile specimen. The strain rate sensitivity m of GNG/CG 304 was 0.0468 that was estimated to be 25-fold greater than the coarse material. The yield strength of GNG/CG 304 at 400°C was 1.6-fold greater than the coarse material at ambient temperature due to the thermal stability of the GNG layer. Thus, the GNG structure could improve the comprehensive mechanical performances of AISI 304 with a balance of strength and ductility.

Abstract:The dynamic plastic behavior related to the gradient distribution of twin spacing in 304 stainless steel thin wires is investigated experimentally with the strain rate varying from 1×10−3/s to 1.5×104/s. Such gradient-nanotwinned structures are prepared by surface mechanical attrition treatment. A mechanism-based dynamic plastic model is developed to describe the strain-rate dependent stress-strain response in gradient-nanotwinned austenite stainless steels. A good agreement between experimental data and simulations was achieved, and further theoretical predictions demonstrated that the dynamic plastic behavior is sensitive to the twin spacing and volume fraction of gradient-nanotwinned region in austenite stainless steel wires.
Simultaneous Improvement of Yield Strength and Ductility at Cryogenic Temperature by Gradient Structure in 304 Stainless Steel

Abstract:The tensile properties and the corresponding deformation mechanism of the graded 304 stainless steel (ss) at both room and cryogenic temperatures were investigated and compared with those of the coarse-grained (CGed) 304 ss. Gradient structures were found to have excellent synergy of strength and ductility at room temperature, and both the yield strength and the uniform elongation were found to be simultaneously improved at cryogenic temperature in the gradient structures, as compared to those for the CG sample. The hetero-deformation-induced (HDI) hardening was found to play a more important role in the gradient structures as compared to the CG sample and be more obvious at cryogenic temperature as compared to that at room temperature. The central layer in the gradient structures provides stronger strain hardening during tensile deformation at both temperatures, due to more volume fraction of martensitic transformation. The volume fraction of martensitic transformation in the gradient structures was found to be much higher at cryogenic temperature, resulting in a much stronger strain hardening at cryogenic temperature. The amount of martensitic transformation at the central layer of the gradient structures is observed to be even higher than that for the CG sample at cryogenic temperature, which is one of the origins for the simultaneous improvement of strength and ductility by the gradient structures at cryogenic temperature.

Abstract:The N-bearing 19Cr-LDSS (Lean Duplex Stainless Steel, LDSS) with heterostructure consisting of coarse-grained ferrite and ultrafine-grained austenite was prepared by combining severe plastic deformation with High Temperature-Short Time (HTST) heat treatment. The microstructural observations and measurements were performed on deformed and annealed samples to correlate the excellent strength-plasticity matching to the grain refining and transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) effect. The heterogeneous structure revealed a remarkable improvement of the strength compared to the counterparts processed by the conventional solution treatment. A yield strength (YS) of 800 MPa, ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 1100 MPa and total elongation (TE) of 45% were achieved by the HTST treatment. Therefore, the higher YS and UTS of 19Cr-LDSS under HTST treatment were obtained on the premise of ensuring the excellent strength-plasticity matching. The high strength was provided by the grain refinement, and the high uniform elongation was attributed to the persistent high strain hardening rate due to the hetero-deformation-induced stress associated with the activation of TRIP effect. Meanwhile, the strain accommodation of coarse-grained ferrite phase also contributed to the improvement of plasticity for the experimental steel.
Gradient nanostructured steel with superior tensile plasticity

Abstract:Nanostructured metallic materials with abundant high-angle grain boundaries exhibit high strength and good radiation resistance. While the nanoscale grains induce high strength, they also degrade tensile ductility. We show that a gradient nanostructured ferritic steel exhibits simultaneous improvement in yield strength by 36% and uniform elongation by 50% compared to the homogenously structured counterpart. In situ tension studies coupled with electron backscattered diffraction analyses reveal intricate coordinated deformation mechanisms in the gradient structures. The outermost nanolaminate grains sustain a substantial plastic strain via a profound deformation mechanism involving prominent grain reorientation. This synergistic plastic co-deformation process alters the rupture mode in the post-necking regime, thus delaying the onset of fracture. The present discovery highlights the intrinsic plasticity of nanolaminate grains and their significance in simultaneous improvement of strength and tensile ductility of structural metallic materials.

Improvement of strength and ductility in a gradient structured Ni fabricated by severe torsion deformation

Abstract:The tensile deformation behavior and microstructure evolution of gradient structured (GS) Ni processed by severe torsion deformation (STD) were systematically investigated. The results show that the gradient shear strain from STD introduces gradient distributions of grain size, microhardness, frequency of low angle grain boundaries, Σ3 twins and geometrically necessary dislocations (GND) density along the radial direction. With the increasing torsional angle of STD, the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength increase correspondingly while the uniform elongation first decreases and then increases. When the torsional angle increases to a maximum torsional revolution of 16, this specific GS Ni undergoes a maximum shear strain and lead to a promoted strength-ductility synergy, showing yield strength of 592 MPa, ultimate tensile strength of 1019 MPa and uniform elongation of 8.58%, as well as the highest work hardening rate. The simultaneous improvement of mechanical property is due to the strong partitioning between the fine grain region and central coarse grain region, which induces a significant work-hardening at the early plastic deformation stage. Therefore, a high shear strain and delicate control of its gradient in STD can lead to a unique gradient structure in metals, which is a good strategy to improve the mechanical properties of rod products.

Investigation on the Intrinsic Plasticity of Gradient Nano-Grained AISI 304 Stainless Steel Treated by Ultrasonic Impact Treatment

Abstract:The gradient nano-grained (GNG) structure was formed on the top layer of AISI 304 with coarse grains (CG) by ultrasonic impact treatment. The impact velocity was 5 m/s and the coverage was changed from 3000% to 15000% to obtain different microstructure GNG/CG materials. The tensile test and small punch test were also performed to investigate the uniaxial and biaxial deformation behaviors of the GNG / CG materials. The results showed that the yield strength sigma(s) was enhanced in both uniaxial and biaxial deformation conditions. But the tensile strength sigma(b) was not nearly changed. The tensile fracture appeared to be dimple. The size of the dimples changed with gradient from the treated surface to the matrix. The strain localization was effectively suppressed in both conditions. AISI 304 of GNG / CG structure was elastically homogeneous but plastically gradient which offered unusual mechanical responses. So the GNG / CG 304 showed intrinsic plasticity like coarse grain one.
Achieving excellent mechanical properties in type 316 stainless steel by tailoring grain size in homogeneously recovered or recrystallized nanostructures

Abstract:One hopeful path to realize good comprehensive mechanical properties in metallic materials is to accomplish homogeneous nanocrystalline (NC) or ultrafine grained (UFG) structure with low dislocation density. In this work, high pressure torsion deformation followed by appropriate annealing was performed on 316 stainless steel (SS). For the first time, we successfully obtained NC/UFG 316 SS having uniform microstructures with various average grain sizes ranging from 46 nm to 2.54 μm and low dislocation densities. Dislocation scarcity in NC/UFG grains was found bringing significant extra enhancement in strength in addition to normal grain boundary hardening, which provided great freedom in tailoring mechanical property of the material with the wide range of average grain sizes. Among the series, an unprecedentedly high yield strength (2.34 GPa) was achieved at the smallest grain size of 46 nm, in which dislocation scarcity induced hardening accounting for 57% of the strength. On the other hand, exceptional strength-ductility synergy with high yield strength (900 MPa) and large uniform elongation (27%) was obtained in the fully recrystallized specimen having the grain size of 0.38 μm, the finest recrystallized grain size ever reported. The high yield stress and scarcity of dislocation sources in recrystallized UFGs activated stacking faults and deformation twins nucleating from grain boundaries during straining, and their interaction with dislocations allowed for sustainable strain hardening, which also agreed with the plaston concept recently proposed. The multiple deformation modes activated, together with the effective strengthening mechanisms, were responsible for the outstanding comprehensive mechanical performance of the material.

Abstract:Gradient nanostructure was introduced to enhance the strength and ductility via deformation incompatibility accommodated by geometrical necessary dislocations for most metallic materials recently. However, few intensive researches were carried out to investigate the effect of gradient structure on the deformation twin evolution and resulting performance improvements. In the present paper, we produced gradient-structured AZ31 Mg alloy with fine-grain layers, parallel twin laminates and a coarse-grain core from two upmost surfaces to the center of plate. Surprisingly, this architected Mg alloy exhibited simultaneous enhancement of strength and ductility. Subsequent microstructural observations demonstrated that abundant twin-twin interactions resulting from higher strength and multi-axial stress state could make great contributions to the increase of work-hardening capability. This was further proved by the measurement of full-field strain evolution during the plastic deformation. Such a design strategy may provide a new path for producing advanced structure materials in which the deformation twinning works as one of the dominant plasticity mechanisms.

Superior Yield Strength and High‐Tensile‐Toughness Matching of Medium‐Mn Steel with Gradient Structure Developed by Cyclic Torsion

Abstract:A novel multiple‐gradient‐structured medium‐Mn steel is successfully fabricated by cyclic torsion. An outstanding simultaneous improvement in yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and tensile toughness is achieved in the gradient sample. A persistent transformation‐induced plasticity effect and heterogeneous‐deformation‐induced (HDI) hardening over the entire uniform strain range are conducive to excellent ductility/toughness. The HDI strengthening and dislocation strengthening primarily contribute to the high strength. A multiphase‐gradient‐structured medium‐Mn steel with dislocation/stacking fault (SF) density gradient, austenite fraction gradient, and grain size gradient is designed and fabricated by cyclic torsion. It exhibits higher yield strength (YS) (942 MPa), ultimate tensile strength (1295 MPa), and tensile toughness (290 mJ mm−3) than its homogeneous counterpart (672, 1273 MPa, and 278 mJ mm−3, respectively). High‐density‐interlaced SFs are generated at the surface region because of the change in strain path and stress state during cyclic torsion. These massive interactive SFs promote the persistent martensite transformation of the retained austenite in the surface region within the entire uniform strain range. Therefore, in addition to the central layer, the surface region in the gradient structures provides strong strain hardening. Moreover, the continuous martensite transformation in the surface region allows the gradient structure to be retained even after tensile failure, which is beneficial for improving the heterogeneous‐deformation‐induced (HDI) hardening of the gradient‐structured sample during tensile deformation. Thus, the combination of active and persistent transformation‐induced plasticity effect and HDI hardening contributes to its excellent tensile toughness and ductility. Quantitative analysis indicates that HDI strengthening and dislocation strengthening play a dominant role in the sample's ultrahigh YS.

Abstract:The yield strengt ultimate tensile strength, and total elongation are 954 MPa, 1030 MPa, and 43.4%, respectively. The high YS mainly originates from the retained martensite and grain refinement, while the ductility enhancement can be attributed to the postponed transformation‐induced plasticity effect, which is a consequence of the significant number fraction of ultrafine grains in the hierarchical microstructure. Ultrafine/fine‐grained austenitic stainless steel (ASS) is prepared through severe cold rolling (CR) and subsequent annealing. The microstructure evolution and tensile deformation behavior is investigated, focusing on the influence of grain size distribution on the mechanical properties and strain‐hardening behavior of the ASS. In the results, it is revealed that obvious ultrafine/fine‐grained hierarchical microstructure forms after annealing at 650 °C for 80 and 110 min, respectively. And, the CR‐80 sample with more ultrafine grains (UFGs) (86%) exhibits good combination of strength and ductility. In this study, a new strategy is provided to solve the strength–ductility tradeoff in TRIP‐assisted metallic materials by tailoring the grain size distribution.
