Abstract:This article introduces a design of resistive-heating system for capillary column used in fast gas chromatography(GC).Direct Current was applied to the capillary column for heating.3-wire platinum resistor and constant current source were used for the temperature measurement.The heating power was controlled by a PWM actuator using a PID algorithm.Eventually the heating system can heat the capillary column from room temperature to 200 ℃ at a rate from 1 ℃/s to 10 ℃/s.The temperature precision is 0.2 ℃.And the system is portable and low power consumption,which can meet the requirement for fast GC.

Abstract:This paper presents a new, comprehensive digital circuit used for the control of a novel gas chromatograph mass spectrometer (GC-MS) interface that is based on supersonic molecular beam (SMB). The circuit includes a Texas Instruments 150 MHz digital signal controller (DSC), high voltage amplifiers for 8 independent channels and 4 independent channels of high resolution pulse width modulation (PWM). The circuit, along with a sophisticated embedded program and a custom made personal computer (PC) application, control all aspects of the interface: smart filament emission-current stabilization, static and scanning mass-dependent ion-source voltages, transfer-line heater proportional integral differential (PID) controls with thermocouple feedbacks, on/off valves, relays and several peripheral device controls that enable the full operation of a turbo-molecular vacuum pump, and of gas flow and pressure controllers. All aspects of this comprehensive controller were successfully tested. The signal for the 450 Th ion (C32H66) for example increased by 123% which is a significant increase. It is obvious that correctly tuned dynamic voltages can guarantee the optimal signal for each mass.

Control Software Design for a Multisensing Multicellular Microscale Gas Chromatography System

Abstract:Microscale gas chromatography (μGC) systems are miniaturized instruments that typically incorporate one or several microfabricated fluidic elements; such systems are generally well suited for the automated sampling and analysis of gas-phase chemicals. Advanced μGC systems may incorporate more than 15 elements and operate these elements in different coordinated sequences to execute complex operations. In particular, the control software must manage the sampling and analysis operations of the μGC system in a time-sensitive manner; while operating multiple control loops, it must also manage error conditions, data acquisition, and user interactions when necessary. To address these challenges, this work describes the investigation of multithreaded control software and its evaluation with a representative μGC system. The μGC system is based on a progressive cellular architecture that uses multiple μGC cells to efficiently broaden the range of chemical analytes, with each cell incorporating multiple detectors. Implemented in Python language version 3.7.3 and executed by an embedded single-board computer, the control software enables the concurrent control of heaters, pumps, and valves while also gathering data from thermistors, pressure sensors, capacitive detectors, and photoionization detectors. A graphical user interface (UI) that operates on a laptop provides visualization of control parameters in real time. In experimental evaluations, the control software provided successful operation and readout for all the components, including eight sets of thermistors and heaters that form temperature feedback loops, two sets of pressure sensors and tunable gas pumps that form pressure head feedback loops, six capacitive detectors, three photoionization detectors, six valves, and an additional fixed-flow gas pump. A typical run analyzing 18 chemicals is presented. Although the operating system does not guarantee real-time operation, the relative standard deviations of the control loop timings were <0.5%. The control software successfully supported >1000 μGC runs that analyzed various chemical mixtures.
Electrically heated, air-cooled thermal modulator and at-column heating for comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography

Abstract:An instrument for comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCxGC) is described using an electrically heated and air-cooled thermal modulator requiring no cryogenic materials or compressed gas for modulator operation. In addition, at-column heating is used to eliminate the need for a convection oven and to greatly reduce the power requirements for column heating. The single-stage modulator is heated by current pulses from a dc power supply and cooled by a conventional two-stage refrigeration unit. The refrigeration unit, together with a heat exchanger and a recirculating pump, cools the modulator to about -30 degrees C. The modulator tube is silica-lined stainless steel with an internal film of dimethylpolysiloxane. The modulator tube is 0.18 mm i.d. x 8 cm in length. The modulator produces an injection plug width as small as 15 ms.

Abstract:The miniaturization of gas chromatography (GC) systems has made it possible to utilize the analytical technique in various on-site applications to rapidly analyze complex gas samples. Various types of miniaturized sensors have been developed for micro-gas chromatography (µGC). However, the integration of an appropriate detector in µGC systems still faces a significant challenge. We present a solution to the problem through integration of µGC with photonic crystal slab (PCS) sensors using transfer printing technology. This integration offers an opportunity to utilize the advantages of optical sensors, such as high sensitivity and rapid response time, and at the same time, compensate for the lack of detection specificity from which label-free optical sensors suffer. We transfer printed a 2D defect free PCS on a borofloat glass, bonded it to a silicon microfluidic gas cell or directly to a microfabricated GC column, and then coated it with a gas responsive polymer. Realtime spectral shift in Fano resonance of the PCS sensor was used to quantitatively detect analytes over a mass range of three orders. The integrated µGC-PCS system was used to demonstrate separation and detection of a complex mixture of 10 chemicals. Fast separation and detection (4 min) and a low detection limit (ng) was demonstrated.

Abstract:We report here the first coupling of fast GC to IRMS, in a system capable of 250 ms peak widths (fwhm) at 1 mL/min flow rates, one-fifth as narrow as any previously reported GCC-IRMS system. We developed an optimized postcolumn interface that results in minimal peak broadening, using a programmable temperature vaporization injector in place of a rotary valve or backflush system to divert solvent, a narrow capillary combustion reactor followed by a cryogenic water trap with narrow-bore (< 0.20 mm We transfer lines, and a narrow W. open split to the IRMS directly inserted into the column effluent. Quantitative combustion was demonstrated with CH4 injections. A comparison of CO2 injections with different fwhm peak widths (250, 2500, and 7500 ms) showed similar precisions, SD(delta C-13) = 0.2-0.3 parts per thousand, for injections of > 600 pmol C on column; precision for the narrow peaks (250 ms) was considerably better for injections < 150 pmol C on column. SD(delta C-13) < 1 parts per thousand was achievable for injections of 5-15 pmol on column for 250 ms wide peaks, 10-fold better precision than 2500 ms wide peaks, and within a factor of 3 of the counting statistics Emit For a mixture of 15 fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), 1.5 nmol C of each on column yielded typical SD(delta C-13(pdb)) = 0.4 parts per thousand for fast GC and 0.5%o for conventional GC. For 14 of the 15 FAME, delta C-13 values between the two systems were within 1.5 parts per thousand and not significantly different Fast GCC-IRMS required one-third the run time (450 s vs 1400 s) to achieve comparable resolution. Mean peak widths for fast GCC-IRMS of the FAME were 720 ins, compared to 650 ms by fast GC with flame ionization detection. At a 15-fold dilution (100 pmol C on column for each FAME), fast GCC-IRMS achieved -2-fold better precision and accuracy than similar injections on conventional GCC-ERMS. Finally, a mixture of 10 steroids (similar to 7 nmol C (100 ng) each on column) was analyzed with mean precision of SD)(delta C-13) = 0.2 parts per thousand in 620 s by fast GCC-IRMS, while conventional GCC-IRMS required 1200 s and achieved poorer resolution. delta C-13 values for the two system were similar (Delta delta C-13 <=:5 2 parts per thousand for all steroids), indicating that accuracy is not compromised. In summary, fast GCC-IRMS can achieve similar precision to conventional GC with considerable time savings for standard sample sizes (> 1 nmol C) and achieves modest precision (similar to 1 parts per thousand) near the counting statistics limit on low level components.

Abstract:Gas chromatography is widely used to identify and quantify volatile organic compounds for applications ranging from environmental monitoring to homeland security. We investigate a new architecture for microfabricated gas chromatography systems that can significantly improve the range, speed, and efficiency of such systems. By using a cellular approach, it performs a partial separation of analytes even as the sampling is being performed. The subsequent separation step is then rapidly performed within each cell. The cells, each of which contains a preconcentrator and separation column, are arranged in progression of retentiveness. While accommodating a wide range of analytes, this progressive cellular architecture (PCA) also provides a pathway to improving energy efficiency and lifetime by reducing the need for heating the separation columns. As a proof of concept, a three-cell subsystem (PCA3mv) has been built; it incorporates a number of microfabricated components, including preconcentrators, separation columns, valves, connectors, and a carrier gas filter. The preconcentrator and separation column of each cell are monolithically implemented as a single chip that has a footprint of 1.8 × 5.2 cm2. This subsystem also incorporates two manifold arrays of microfabricated valves, each of which has a footprint of 1.3 × 1.4 cm2. Operated together with a commercial flame ionization detector, the subsystem has been tested against polar and nonpolar analytes (including alkanes, alcohols, aromatics, and phosphonate esters) over a molecular weight range of 32–212 g/mol and a vapor pressure range of 0.005–231 mmHg. The separations require an average column temperature of 63–68 °C within a duration of 12 min, and provide separation resolutions >2 for any two homologues that differ by one methyl group.

Abstract:There is revived interest in the development and implementation of methods of faster GC. The paper summarises the advantages of faster GC analysis, general approaches to faster GC method development and practical aspects of fast gas chromatography with the utilisation of open tubular capillary columns with the stress on trace analysis. There are a number of ways to take the advantage of the improved speed of analysis by faster GC. Numerous options exist for pushing the speed of capillary gas chromatography (CGC) analysis. The scope of this paper is also to give an overview of the present state of faster GC instrumentation which is already available for trace analysis. The practicality of fast CGC is a function of sample preparation and the matrix interferences and how they affect the resultant resolution that may be achieved. Researchers have demonstrated the applicability of fast GC to trace and ultratrace analysis of volatile and semivolatile compounds also with narrow bore columns and difficult sample matrices (such as food, and soil extract). The main development of faster GC methods has been observed in the field of environmental analysis. Practical applications are presented. Both optimised sample preparation and experimental conditions for faster GC are the future perspective of trace analysis.

Abstract:This paper reports a complete micro gas chromatography (μGC) system in which all the components are lithographically microfabricated and electronically interfaced. The components include a bi-directional Knudsen pump, a preconcentrator, separation columns and a pair of capacitive gas detectors; together, these form the iGC3.c2 system. All the fluidic components of the system are fabricated by a common three-mask lithographic process. The Knudsen pump is a thermomolecular pump that provides air flow to the μGC without any moving parts. The film heaters embedded in the separation columns permit temperature programming. The capacitive detectors provide complementary response patterns, enhancing vapor recognition and resolving co-eluting peaks. With the components assembled on printed circuit boards, the system has a footprint of 8×10 cm2 . Using room air as the carrier gas, the system is used to experimentally demonstrate the analysis of 19 chemicals with concentration levels on the order of parts per million (p.p.m.) and parts per billion (p.p.b.). The tested chemicals include alkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons, aldehydes, halogenated hydrocarbons and terpenes. This set of chemicals represents a variety of common indoor air pollutants, among which benzene, toluene and xylenes (BTX) are of particular interest.

Abstract:An integrated system having the combined capability to perform gas chromatography (GC), comprehensive two-dimensional GC (GC × GC), and target heart-cut multidimensional GC (MDGC) using olfactometry (O), flame ionization (FID), and/or mass spectrometry (MS) detection is described. This combines a number of contemporary GC methods into a single instrument to provide very high resolution profiling of a sample. This provides initial assessment of volatile compound composition through GC × GC analysis with FID, which can be correlated with GC analysis using parallel O and FID detection. Subsequent microfluidic (Deans) switching selects regions (heart-cuts) of the chromatographic elution from the first dimension ((1)D) column for further resolution on a long second dimension ((2)D(L)) column for parallel detection of O and MS. Various (2)D(L) operational conditions, as well as the effect of different heart-cut (H/C) duration, were compared. The favored mode involves cryotrapping of heart-cuts, cooling the oven, and reducing carrier flow to offer greater efficiency. An analytical strategy that incorporates GC-FID/O, GC × GC-FID, and MDGC-MS/O analyses with cumulative solid phase microextraction (SPME) sampling for volatile sample enrichment is presented in this work. Excellent qualitative and quantitative performance was demonstrated with a Shiraz wine sample and an allergens mixture, with tentative identification of acetic acid, octen-3-ol, and ethyl octanoate as aroma contributors in Shiraz wine and determination of β-damascenone (floral odor) well separated from hexanoic acid (sweaty odor). A novel approach to obtain (2)D retention indices is reported, allowing matching of mass spectral, (1)I (retention index in (1)D) and (2)I (retention index in (2)D) data. The method employs the same olfactory detector at the end of the (1)D and (2)D(L) columns.

Abstract:This work illustrates how the Tandem micro-Reactor (TMR), when interfaced to a GC-MS, facilitates the rapid characterization of virtually any material: gases, liquids and solids. A TMR has two independently controlled micro-reactors in series. Each micro-reactor has three heating modes: isothermal (up to 900 degrees C), multi-linear (e.g., 100-400 degrees C at 20 degrees C/min) and distinct temperature steps (e.g., 100 degrees C, 200 degrees C, etc.). The TMR can be used for both Evolved Gas Analysis (EGA) and detailed component analysis. Three examples illustrate how the TMR-GC-MS can be configured to differentiate or identify virtually any material. (1) Lignin, oak, bagasse and cellulose are easily differentiated using EGA-MS - each material is analyzed directly by simply weighing the sample (<75 mesh) into the sample cup. (2,3) The temperature dependence of ethanol and methanol transformations to ethylene and propylene, respectively, are presented using an online, real-time configuration. The ethylene transformation is also performed using a series of ethanol injections at distinct catalyst temperatures. Lastly, regeneration of the catalyst's surface is performed in-situ, which improves laboratory productive as well as elevating the precision of the data. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Total-transfer comprehensive three-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry

Abstract:Although comprehensive two-dimensional (2D) gas chromatography (GC × GC) is a powerful technique for complex samples, component overlap remains likely. An intriguing route to address this challenge is to utilize the additional peak capacity and chemical selectivity provided by comprehensive three-dimensional (3D) gas chromatography (GC3), especially with time-of-flight mass spectrometry detection (GC3-TOFMS). However, the GC3-TOFMS instrumentation reported to date has employed one or both modulators with a duty cycle < 100%, making the potential gain in detection sensitivity over GC × GC modest, or perhaps even worse. Herein, we describe instrumentation for GC3-TOFMS in which both modulators provide total-transfer (100% duty cycle). Specifically, the instrument is based on the facile modification of a commercial thermally modulated comprehensive GC × GC-TOFMS platform for modulation from the 1D column to the 2D column, with recently described dynamic pressure gradient modulation (DPGM) as the second modulator from the 2D column to the 3D column, which is a total-transfer flow modulation technique. Area measurements of 1D peaks are compared to the sum of 3D peak areas to validate the assumption that total-transfer from 1D to 3D is accomplished. Additionally, peak heights were amplified by as high as a factor of 177 (x̅ = 130, s = 47) via comparison of 1D peak heights to the maximum 3D peak heights. Column selection is explored, with emphasis on the resulting peak width-at-base on each dimension and usage of 3D space as evaluation metrics. Using a nonpolar × polar × ionic liquid column combination, an effective peak capacity which considers modulation-induced broadening as high as 32,300 for select analytes was achieved (x̅ = 19,900, s = 10,700). The analytical benefits of employing three selective phases, mass spectrometry detection, and total-transfer modulation are explored with separations of a metabolomics-type sample, i.e., derivatized porcine serum, and a jet fuel spiked with various sulfur-containing compounds.
A MEMS-enabled portable gas chromatography injection system for trace analysis

Abstract:Growing concerns about environmental conditions, public health, and disease diagnostics have led to the rapid development of portable sampling techniques to characterize trace-level volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from various sources. A MEMS-based micropreconcentrator (μPC) is one such approach that drastically reduces the size, weight, and power constraints offering greater sampling flexibility in many applications. However, the adoption of μPCs on a commercial scale is hindered by a lack of thermal desorption units (TDUs) that easily integrate μPCs with gas chromatography (GC) systems equipped with a flame ionization detector (FID) or a mass spectrometer (MS). Here, we report a highly versatile μPC-based, single-stage autosampler-injection unit for traditional, portable, and micro-GCs. The system uses μPCs packaged in 3D-printed swappable cartridges and is based on a highly modular interfacing architecture that allows easy-to-remove, gas-tight fluidic, and detachable electrical connections (FEMI). This study describes the FEMI architecture and demonstrates the FEMI-Autosampler (FEMI-AS) prototype (9.5 cm × 10 cm x 20 cm, ≈500 gms). The system was integrated with GC-FID, and the performance was investigated using synthetic gas samples and ambient air. The results were contrasted with the sorbent tube sampling technique using TD-GC-MS. FEMI-AS could generate sharp injection plugs (≈240 ms) and detect analytes with concentrations <15 ppb within 20 s and <100 ppt within 20 min of sampling time. With more than 30 detected trace-level compounds from ambient air, the demonstrated FEMI-AS, and the FEMI architecture significantly accelerate the adoption of μPCs on a broader scale.

Abstract:We developed a novel approach to isolate and recollect or remove nearly any compound from complex GCxGC chromatograms. This was achieved by modifying a thermal desorption-GCxGC-Q-TOF system with a Deans switch, a passive splitter, and careful optimization of flows and capillary dimensions. The setup was evaluated with 106 standard chemicals covering a wide range of volatility (boiling points: 56 – 343 ⁰C) and polarity (log P: -0.2 – 9.4). We found that the recovery from tube to tube can become highly efficient if a custom-made adapter is attached directly on the flame ionization detector port (average recovery rate of 76 ± 7%). Furthermore, we were able to isolate peaks separated by a minimum distance of 50 milliseconds from each other at the base throughout the whole chromatographic run. In addition, the setup was designed for easy adaptation by repurposing existing instrument control software to define the isolation windows for the compounds of interest (first and second column retention time windows). We expect this novel development to allow several new applications, e.g., the isolation and selective enrichment or removal of molecules in food and flavour analysis; the investigation of suspect chemicals (incl. unknowns) for effect directed analysis (e.g., bioassays), and the isolation of compounds in the high-ng range (upon multiple isolation iterations) to be subjected to further chemical analyses (e.g. chemical ionization tandem mass spectrometry).

Abstract:Abstract. A reliable method of sample introduction is presented for online gas chromatography with a special application to in situ field portable atmospheric sampling instruments. A traditional multi-port valve is replaced with a valveless sample introduction interface that offers the advantage of long-term reliability and stable sample transfer efficiency. An engineering design model is presented and tested that allows customizing this pressure-switching-based device for other applications. Flow model accuracy is within measurement accuracy (1%) when parameters are tuned for an ambient-pressure detector and 15% accurate when applied to a vacuum-based detector. Laboratory comparisons made between the two methods of sample introduction using a thermal desorption aerosol gas chromatograph (TAG) show that the new interface has approximately 3 times greater reproducibility maintained over the equivalent of a week of continuous sampling. Field performance results for two versions of the valveless interface used in the in situ instrument demonstrate typically less than 2% week−1 response trending and a zero failure rate during field deployments ranging up to 4 weeks of continuous sampling. Extension of the valveless interface to dual collection cells is presented with less than 3% cell-to-cell carryover.

Abstract:Rapid <i>in situ</i> detection and analysis of trace vapor concentrations at a sub-parts per billion to parts per trillion level remains a challenge for many applications such as indoor air-quality analysis and detection of explosives and narcotics. Micro-gas chromatography (μGC) together with a micro-photoionization detector (μPID) is a prominent method for portable analysis of complex vapor mixtures, but current μPID technology demonstrates poor detection performance compared to benchtop flame ionization detectors (FIDs). This work demonstrates the development of a significantly improved μPID with a sub-picogram detection limit (as low as ∼0.2 pg) comparable to or exceeding that of a benchtop FID, with a large linear dynamic range (>4 orders of magnitude) and robustness (high stability over 200 h of plasma activation). Based on this μPID, a complete μGC–PID system was built and tested on standard sample chromatograms in a laboratory setting to show the system's analytical capabilities and the detection limit down to sub-parts per trillion concentrations (as low as 0.14 ppt). Practical in-field chromatograms on breath and car exhaust were also generated to demonstrate applicability for <i>in situ</i> experimentation.
