Abstract:Photonic modes in dielectric nanostructures, e.g., wide gap semiconductor like CeO2 (ceria), has potential for various applications such as light harvesting and information transmission. To fully understand the properties of such phenomenon in nanoscale, we applied electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) in scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) to detect such modes in a well-defined ceria nanocube. Through spectra and mapping, we demonstrated a geometrical difference of mode excitation. By comparing various spectra taken at different location relative to the cube, we also showed the transmission properties of the mode. To confirm our observation, we performed EELS simulation with finite-element dielectric calculations in COMSOL Multiphysics. We also revealed the origin of the modes through the calculation. We purposed a simple analytical model to estimate the energy of photonic modes as well. In all, this work gave a fine description of the photonic modes' properties in nanostructures, while demonstrating the advantage of EELS in characterizing optical phenomena in nanoscale.

High efficiency coupling of free electrons to sub-$λ^3$ modal volume, high-Q photonic cavities

Abstract:We report on the design, realization and experimental investigation by spatially resolved monochromated electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) of high quality factor cavities with modal volumes smaller than $\lambda^3$, with $\lambda$ the free-space wavelength of light. The cavities are based on a slot defect in a 2D photonic crystal slab made up of silicon. They are optimized for high coupling of electrons accelerated to 100 kV, to quasi-Transverse Electrical modes polarized along the slot direction. We studied the cavities in two geometries. The first geometry, for which the cavities have been designed, corresponds to an electron beam travelling along the slot direction. The second consists in the electron beam travelling perpendicular to the slab. In both cases, a large series of modes is identified. The dielectric slot modes energies are measured to be in the 0.8- 0.85 eV range, as per design, and surrounded by two bands of dielectric and air modes of the photonic structure. The dielectric even slot modes, to which the cavity mode belongs, are highly coupled to the electrons with up to 3.2$\%$ probability of creating a slot photon per incident electron. Although the experimental spectral resolution (around 30 meV) alone does not allow to disentangle cavity photons from other slot photons, the remarkable agreement between the experiments and FDTD simulations permits us to deduce that amongst the photons created in the slot, around 30$\%$ are stored in the cavity mode. A systematic study of the energy and coupling strength as a function of the photonic band gap parameters permits to foresee increase of coupling strength by fine-tuning phase matching. Our work demonstrates free electron coupling to high quality factor cavities with low mode density, sub-$\lambda^3$ modal volume, making it an excellent candidate for applications such as quantum nano-optics with free electrons.

Abstract:We demonstrate the design, fabrication, and characterization of side-coupled airmode nanobeam photonic crystal cavities in silicon-on-insulator platform. Results show that repeatable devices achieve similar high loaded quality factors (>10(4)) and large optical energy ratio in low refractive region. The unload Q-factors of the fabricated cavities are estimated to exceed 10(5). With side-coupled configuration, high transmission of through port is achieved with typical insertion loss less than 0.5 dB. Wavelength shifts of the measured resonances with respect to the designed values are observed and well explained by considering the fluctuation of etching depth. The demonstrated side-coupled airmode nanobeam photonic crystal cavities may find their applications in ultracompact integrated photonics, especially for on-chip photonic sensor, notch filter, or optical switch.
Near-field Imaging of Optical Resonances in Silicon Metasurfaces Using Photoelectron Microscopy

Abstract:Precise control of light-matter interactions at the nanoscale lies at the heart of nanophotonics. Experimental examination at this length scale is challenging, however, since the corresponding electromagnetic near-field is often confined within volumes below the resolution of conventional optical microscopy. In semiconductor nanophotonics electromagnetic fields are further restricted within the confines of individual subwavelength resonators, limiting access to critical light-matter interactions in these structures. In this work, we demonstrate that photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM) can be used for polarization resolved near-field spectroscopy and imaging of electromagnetic resonances supported by broken-symmetry silicon metasurfaces. We find that the photoemission results, enabled through an in-situ potassium surface layer, are consistent with full-wave simulations and far-field reflectance measurements across visible and near-infrared wavelengths. In addition, we uncover a polarization dependent evolution of collective resonances near the metasurface array edge taking advantage of the far-field excitation and full-field imaging of PEEM. Here, we deduce that coupling between eight resonators or more establishes the collective excitations of this metasurface. All told, we demonstrate that the high-spatial resolution hyperspectral imaging and far-field illumination of PEEM can be leveraged for the metrology of collective, non-local, optical resonances in semiconductor nanophotonic structures.

Spontaneous and Stimulated Electron-Photon Interactions in Nanoscale Plasmonic Near Fields

Abstract:We demonstrate spatially-resolved measurements of spontaneous and stimulated electron-photon interactions in nanoscale optical near fields using electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), cathodoluminescence spectroscopy (CL), and photon-induced near-field electron microscopy (PINEM). Specifically, we study resonant surface plasmon modes that are tightly confined to the tip apexes of an Au nanostar, enabling a direct correlation of EELS, CL, and PINEM on the same physical structure at the nanometer length scale. Complemented by numerical electromagnetic boundary-element method calculations, we discuss the spontaneous and stimulated electron-photon interaction strength and spatial dependence of our EELS, CL and PINEM distributions. We demonstrate that in the limit of an isolated tip mode, spatial variations in the electron-near field coupling are fully determined by the modal electric field profile, irrespective of the spontaneous (in EELS and CL) or stimulated nature (in PINEM) of the process. Yet we show that coupling to the tip modes crucially depends on the incident electron energy with a maximum at a few keV, depending on the proximity of the interaction to the tip apex. Our results provide elementary insights into spontaneous and stimulated electron-light-matter interactions at the nanoscale that have key implications for research on (quantum) coherent optical phenomena in electron microscopy.

Inelastic Scattering of Electron Beams by Nonreciprocal Nanotructures

Abstract:Probing optical excitations with high resolution is important for understanding their dynamics and controlling their interaction with other photonic elements. This can be done using state-of-the-art electron microscopes, which provide the means to sample optical excitations with combined meV--sub-nm energy--space resolution. For reciprocal photonic systems, electrons traveling in opposite directions produce identical signals, while this symmetry is broken in nonreciprocal structures. Here, we theoretically investigate this phenomenon by analyzing electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) and cathodoluminescence (CL) in structures consisting of magnetically biased InAs as an instance of gyrotropic nonreciprocal material. We find that the spectral features associated with excitations of InAs films depend on the electron propagation direction in both EELS and CL, and can be tuned by varying the applied magnetic field within a relatively modest sub-tesla regime. The magnetic field modifies the optical field distribution of the sampled resonances, and this in turn produces a direction-dependent coupling to the electron. The present results pave the way to the use of electron microscope spectroscopies to explore the near-field characteristics of nonreciprocal systems with high spatial resolution.

Abstract:Nanoscale field confinement enabled by plasmonic phenonena [1] has great potential to revolutionize many applications in nanophotonics, including bio-sensing, imaging, and magnetic recording. Various schemes using propagating surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waves have been suggested [2-4], but they experience power losses due to SPP propagation, restricting their practical applications. Here we experimentally demonstrate use of plasmonic resonant phenomena combined with strong field localization to enhance efficiency of confining optical fields. Our approach utilizes a nano-crescent-moon (NCM) shape plasmonic element integrated with a lossless Si waveguide utilized with silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology, to achieve a sub-diffraction limited focusing with spot size ~25 nm. The metallic NCM effectively converts an incoming propagating waveguide mode into a localized resonant plasmon mode, which is localized in an ultrasmall volume in all 3 dimensions. The novel NCM geometry for efficient field localization simultaneously uses three physical mechanisms: localized surface surface plasmons (LSPs) [5,6], SPP edge localization [4], and TEM field localization [7]. The near-field optical measurements of the fabricated NCM using heterodyne near-field scanning optical microscope (H-NSOM) validate the theoretical predictions showing strong field localization.

Probing the electromagnetic response of dielectric antennas by vortex electron beams

Abstract:Focused beams of electrons, which act as both sources, and sensors of electric fields, can be used to characterise the electric response of complex photonic systems by locally probing the induced optical near fields. This functionality can be complemented by embracing the recently developed vortex electron beams (VEBs), made up of electrons with orbital angular momentum, which could, in addition, probe induced magnetic near fields. In this work, we revisit the theoretical description of this technique, dubbed vortex Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy (v-EELS). We map the fundamental, quantum-mechanical picture of the scattering of the VEB electrons to the intuitive classical models, which treat the electron beams as a superposition of linear electric and magnetic currents. We then apply this formalism to characterise the optical response of dielectric nanoantennas with v-EELS. Our calculations reveal that VEB electrons probe electric or magnetic modes with different efficiency, which can be adjusted by changing either beam vorticity or acceleration voltage to determine the nature of the probed excitations. We also study a chirally-arranged nanostructure, which in the interaction with electron vortices produces dichroism in electron energy loss spectra. Our theoretical work establishes VEBs as versatile probes that could provide information on optical excitations otherwise inaccessible with conventional electron beams.

Abstract:In the field of nanophotonics, the manipulation of light using high refractive index dielectric materials has garnered significant attention in recent years. This occurs because dielectric materials with a high refractive index demonstrate lower losses in comparison to metallic plasmonic materials. Furthermore, the interference between internal toroidal dipole moment and electric dipole moment leads to destructive interference in the radiation field, resulting in the formation of an anapole state and localization of energy in the near-field. In this work, we initially excite the anapole state in a silicon nanodisk with a periodic nanostructured disk. By introducing a cross slit and adjusting the structural parameters, the anapole state is further optimized, and achieving highly concentrated near-field energy within the cross air slit of the silicon nanodisk. Specially designed, with a full width at halfmaximum (FWHM) of the transmitted spectrum of only 0.09 nm, and a Q factor of up to 9745, close to 104. Additionally, the structure can produce up to 571 times the electric field enhancement. The remarkable performance of a high Q factor and localized near-field energy holds great potential for various applications, including enhancing nonlinear effects, surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and designing nanolasers.
Mie-excitons: understanding strong coupling in dielectric nanoparticles

Abstract:We theoretically analyse the hybrid Mie-exciton optical modes arising from the strong coupling of excitons in organic dyes or transition-metal dichalcogenides with the Mie resonances of high-index dielectric nanoparticles. Detailed analytic calculations show that silicon--exciton core--shell nanoparticles are characterised by a richness of optical modes which can be tuned through nanoparticle dimensions to produce large anticrossings in the visible or near infrared, comparable to those obtained in plexcitonics. The complex magnetic-excitonic nature of these modes is understood through spectral decomposition into Mie-coefficient contributions, complemented by electric and magnetic near-field profiles. In the frequency range of interest, absorptive losses in silicon are sufficiently low to allow observation of several periods of Rabi oscillations in strongly coupled emitter-particle architectures, as confirmed here by discontinuous Galerkin time-domain calculations for the electromagnetic field beat patterns. These results suggest that Mie resonances in high-index dielectrics are promising alternatives for plasmons in strong-coupling applications in nanophotonics, while the coupling of magnetic and electric modes opens intriguing possibilities for external control.

Measuring the mode volume of plasmonic nanocavities using coupled optical emitters

Abstract:Metallic optical systems can confine light to deep sub-wavelength dimensions, but verifying the level of confinement at these length scales typically requires specialized techniques and equipment for probing the near-field of the structure. We experimentally measured the confinement of a metal-based optical cavity by using the cavity modes themselves as a sensitive probe of the cavity characteristics. By perturbing the cavity modes with conformal dielectric layers of sub-nm thickness using atomic layer deposition, we find the exponential decay length of the modes to be less than 5% of the free-space wavelength (\lambda) and the mode volume to be of order \lambda^3/1000. These results provide experimental confirmation of the deep sub-wavelength confinement capabilities of metal-based optical cavities.

Electron and Light Induced Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy for Nanoscale Molecular Mapping

Abstract:We propose and theoretically analyze a new vibrational spectroscopy, termed electron- and light-induced stimulated Raman (ELISR) scattering, that combines the high spatial resolution of electron microscopy with the molecular sensitivity of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. With ELISR, electron-beam excitation of plasmonic nanoparticles is utilized as a spectrally-broadband but spatially-confined Stokes beam in the presence of a diffraction-limited pump laser. To characterize this technique, we develop a numerical model and conduct full-field electromagnetic simulations to investigate two distinct nanoparticle geometries, nanorods and nanospheres, coated with a Raman-active material. Our results show the significant ($10^6$-$10^7$) stimulated Raman enhancement that is achieved with dual electron and optical excitation of these nanoparticle geometries. Importantly, the spatial resolution of this vibrational spectroscopy for electron microscopy is solely determined by the nanoparticle geometry and the plasmon mode volume. Our results highlight the promise of ELISR for simultaneous high-resolution electron microscopy with sub-diffraction-limited Raman spectroscopy, complementing advances in superresolution microscopy, correlated light and electron microscopy, and vibrational electron energy loss spectroscopy.

Abstract:Localized surface plasmon resonances of nanostructured metals and Mie resonances of submicron-structured semiconductors couple with electromagnetic waves, producing extreme light concentration. These phenomena have led to the development of plasmonics and Mie-tronics, and the volume and quality of fundamental research, novel techniques, and applications in these fields is increasing. Thanks to technological progress, localized surface plasmon resonances can be imaged with high spatial (>0.05 nm), energetic (>0.05 meV), and temporal (0.2 fs) resolutions using three modalities: cathodoluminescence (CL), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM). In addition, Mie resonances, which occur in larger-sized dielectric materials with low electric conductivity (i.e., submicron-structured semiconductors), can be imaged using a far-field confocal spectromicroscopy. Although there have been various landmark surface plasmon and Mie resonance imaging results based on both electron and optical spectromicroscopy techniques, so far, perspectives have been focused exclusively on one topic or the other. Moreover, Mie-tronics is a rapidly expanding field, but there are no published reviews of Mie scattering/resonance mapping experiments. A combined overview of the mutually relevant fields of both optical and electron spectroscopic imaging should provide important insights. Furthermore, direct comparisons between plasmonics and Mie-tronics studies are valuable from the viewpoints of physical chemistry and materials science. Herein, representative state-of-the-art localized surface plasmon and Mie resonance mapping results obtained using four imaging modalitiesCL, EELS, SNOM, and far-field confocal spectromicroscopyare described, and the advantages and disadvantages of each, together with future perspectives, are discussed.

Flexible Silicon Dimer Nanocavity with Electric and Magnetic Enhancement

Abstract:High-index dielectrics have recently been regarded as promising building blocks in nanophotonics owing to optical electric and magnetic Mie resonances. In particular, silicon is gaining great interest as the backbone of modern technology. Here, silicon dimer nanocavities with different sizes of silicon nanospheres were constructed using a probe nanomanipulation method and interacted with a few-layered R6G membrane to investigate the enhancement of electric and magnetic mode coupling. The evidence of the enhancement of fluorescence and slightly prolonged lifetime of R6G indicated the existence of nanocavities. In addition, the simulated electric and magnetic field distributions and decomposed mode of nanocavity were used to analyze the contribution of electric and magnetic modes to the R6G enhanced fluorescence. Such silicon dimer is a flexible nanocavity with electric and magnetic mode enhancement and has promising applications in sensing and all-dielectric metamaterials or nanophotonic devices.
Selective probing of longitudinal and transverse plasmon modes with electron phase-matching

Abstract:The optical properties of metallic nanoparticles are dominated by localized surface plasmons (LSPs). Their properties only depend on the constituting material, the size and shape of the nano-object as well as its surrounding medium. In anisotropic structures, such as metallic nanorods, two families of modes generally exist, transverse and longitudinal. Their spectral and spatial overlaps usually impede their separate measurements in electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). In this work, we propose three different strategies enabling to overcome this difficulty and selectively probe longitudinal and transverse modes. The first strategy is numeric and relies on morphing of nano-structures, rooted in the geometrical nature of LSPs. The two other strategies exploit the relativistic and wave nature of the electrons in an EELS experiment. The first one is the phase-matching between the electron and the plasmon excitation to enhance their coupling by either tilting the sample and modifying the electron kinetic energy. The second one - polarized EELS (pEELS) - exploits the wave nature of electrons to mimic selection rules analogous to the one existing in light spectroscopies. The above-mentioned strategies are exemplified - either experimentally or numerically - on a canonical plasmonic toy model: the nano-rod. The goal of the paper is to bring together the state-of-the-art concepts of EELS for plasmonics to tackle a pedestrian problem in this field.

Abstract:Abstract Nanotechnology enables in principle a precise mapping from design to device but relied so far on human intuition and simple optimizations. In nanophotonics, a central question is how to make devices in which the light-matter interaction strength is limited only by materials and nanofabrication. Here, we integrate measured fabrication constraints into topology optimization, aiming for the strongest possible light-matter interaction in a compact silicon membrane, demonstrating an unprecedented photonic nanocavity with a mode volume of V ~ 3 × 10 −4 λ 3 , quality factor Q ~ 1100, and footprint 4 λ 2 for telecom photons with a λ ~ 1550 nm wavelength. We fabricate the cavity, which confines photons inside 8 nm silicon bridges with ultra-high aspect ratios of 30 and use near-field optical measurements to perform the first experimental demonstration of photon confinement to a single hotspot well below the diffraction limit in dielectrics. Our framework intertwines topology optimization with fabrication and thereby initiates a new paradigm of high-performance additive and subtractive manufacturing.

Abstract:The combination of Moore's law and Dennard's scaling rules have constituted the fundamental guidelines for the silicon-based semiconductor industry for decades. Furthermore, the enormous growth of global data volume has pushed the demand for complex and densely packed devices. In recent years, it has become clear that wired interconnects impose increasingly severe speed and power limitations onto integrated circuits as scaling slows toward a halt. To overcome these limitations, there is a clear need for optical data processing. Despite significant progress in the development of silicon photonics, light sources remain challenging owing to the indirect bandgap of group IV materials. It is therefore highly desirable to develop new concepts for a silicon light source that meets efficiency and footprint requirements similar to their electronic counterparts. Here, we demonstrate an electrically driven and tunable silicon light source by matching the resonant modes of a silver nanocavity with the hot luminescence spectrum of an avalanching p-n junction. The cavity significantly enhances phonon-assisted recombination of hot carriers by tailoring the local density of states at the size-tunable resonance. Such tunable nanoscale emitter may be of great interest for short-reach communications, microdisplays or lab-on-chip applications.
