Abstract:OBJECTIVES:To radiographically analyze the effects of tenting screw technique (TS) and onlay bone grafts (OG) in horizontal bone augmentation.MATERIALS AND METHODS:Patients receiving horizontal bone augmentation by TS or OG were selected. The clinical outcomes and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) data were documented pre-grafting, immediately post-grafting, before and after implantation. The survival rates, clinical complications, alveolar bone width, and volumetric bone augmentation were evaluated and statistically analyzed.RESULTS:A total of 25 patients and 41 implants were involved in this study, with no grafting failures observed in either the TS group (n = 20) or the onlay group (n = 21). Volumetric bone resorption rate in the TS group (21.34%) was significantly lower than that of the OG group (29.38%). In addition, significant horizontal bone gain was achieved in both groups (TS: 6.15 ± 2.12 mm; OG: 4.86 ± 1.40 mm) during the recovery period, with higher gain in the TS group. No apparent statistical difference in terms of volumetric bone gain was observed between the TS (748.53 mm3 , 607.47 mm3 ) and OG group (811.77 mm3 , 508.49 mm3 ) immediately post-grafting or after the recovery period.CONCLUSION:Both TS and OG achieved satisfactory bone augmentation effects, yet TS resulted in more bone augmentation and better stability than OG, with a reduced use of autogenous bone. Overall, the tenting screw technique can serve as an effective alternative to autogenous bone grafts.
Subperiosteal Ridge Augmentation Technique Utilizing Sticky Bone: A Case Series

Abstract:This case series presents the application of a novel minimally invasive technique for augmenting ridge defects across four edentulous sites, thereby circumventing common postoperative complications associated with conventional ridge augmentation techniques. The case series details three cases encompassing four edentulous sites with class I and III ridge defects. This approach uses a minimally invasive subperiosteal technique for ridge augmentation, followed by a delayed implant placement. Subperiosteal incisions were made mesial to the edentulous sites, and subperiosteal pouches were created using tunneling instruments. Sticky bone (comprising injectable platelet-rich fibrin (IPRF) and xenograft) was applied to the pouches, followed by Vicryl suturing. The cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) assessed dimensional changes between baseline and 180 days post-ridge augmentation. Subsequently, during implant insertion after 180 days, bone samples were collected, decalcified using 10% formic acid, and sectioned to a thickness of 5 µm. Histological analysis of the bone samples was conducted using a bright field microscope, while histomorphometric analysis was carried out using Image J software. The modified subperiosteal tunneling technique employed in this case report, coupled with using sticky bone as an augmentation material, demonstrates promise as a reliable method for ridge augmentation.
Horizontal ridge augmentation with a resorbable membrane and particulated autogenous bone with or without anorganic bovine bone-derived mineral: a prospective case series in 22 patients

Abstract:Purpose: This prospective case series evaluated the use of a new synthetic resorbable membrane with autogenous bone, either alone or in combination with anorganic bovine bone-derived mineral, for horizontal ridge augmentation and subsequent implant placement. Materials and methods: Particulated autogenous bone, either alone or in combination with anorganic bovine bone-derived mineral, was used for lateral ridge augmentation and covered with a new synthetic resorbable membrane (glycolide and trimethylene carbonate) to treat knife-edged ridges and prepare them for implant placement. Ridge measurements were obtained before and after augmentation, complications were recorded, and biopsy specimens were examined histologically. Results: Fifty-eight implants were placed in 22 patients with 25 surgical sites in knife-edged ridges. No complications were associated with this treatment. Clinical measurements revealed an average of 5.56 mm (± 1.45 mm) of lateral ridge augmentation after an average of 8.12 months (± 2.32 months) of graft healing. Clinically, all treated ridges were sufficient in width for subsequent implant placement. All implants have survived, with an average follow-up period of 45.88 months (± 12.43 months). Histologic analysis of the selected augmentation sites showed new bone formation and good incorporation of the bovine bone mineral particles. Conclusion: The high implant survival rate and the low complication rate show the potential of this technique for the treatment of horizontal augmentation of lateral ridges and the efficacy of the new resorbable synthetic membrane.
Diagnostic efficacy of single-pass abdominal multidetector-row CT: prospective evaluation of a low dose protocol.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of single-pass contrast-enhanced multidetector CT (CE-MDCT) performed with a low-radiation high-contrast (LR-HC) dose protocol in selected patients with non-traumatic acute bowel disease. METHODS 65 (32 males, 33 females; aged 20-67 years) consecutive patients with non-traumatic acute bowel disease underwent single-pass CE-MDCT performed 70-100 s after i.v. bolus injection of a non-ionic iodinated contrast medium (CM) (370 mgI ml-1). In 46 (70%) patients with a clinical and/or ultrasonographic suspicion of inflammatory bowel disease, up to 1.2-1.4 l of a 7% polyethylene-glycol solution was orally administered 45-60 mins prior to the CT examination. Patients were then divided into two groups according to age: Group A (20-44 years; n = 34) and Group B (45-70 years; n = 31). Noise index (NI) and CM dose were selected as follows: Group A (NI = 15; 2.5 ml kg-1) and Group B (NI = 12.5; 2 ml kg-1). All patients of Group A underwent thyroid functional tests at 4-6 weeks. Final diagnoses were obtained by open (n = 12) or laparoscopic surgery (n = 4), endoscopy w/without biopsy (n = 24) and clinical (n = 19) and/or instrumental (ultrasonography) (n = 6) follow-up at 11 ± 4 months (range 6-18 mo.). Statistical analysis was performed by χ2 and Student's t-test for categorical and continuous variables, respectively. RESULTS Sensitivity and specificity were 91.3 vs 95.4% (p = 0.905) and 90.9 vs 88.8% (p = 0.998) with an overall diagnostic accuracy of 91.1 vs 93.5% (p = 0.756), whereas the radiation (in millisievert) and CM dose (in millilitre) were 7.5 ± 2.8 mSv and 155 ± 30 ml for Group A and 14.1 ± 5.3 mSv and 130 ± 24 ml for Group B (p < 0.001), respectively. No patients of Group A showed laboratory signs of thyrotoxicosis at follow-up. CONCLUSION The LR-HC has proved to be a safe and a dose-effective protocol in the evaluation of selected young patients with non-traumatic acute bowel disease. Advances in knowledge: (1) As reaching the highest diagnostic benefit to risk ratio (AHARA) appears to be the current principle of MDCT imaging, an increased amount of iodinated CM (0.7-0.9 gI ml-1) can be safely administered to young patients (<40 years) with normal thyroid and renal function to compensate for the lower image quality resulting from low-dose CT protocols performed with the standard filter back-projection algorithm. Such an approach will result in a significant reduction of the radiation dose, which could be otherwise achieved only using iterative reconstruction algorithms combined with either low tube voltage and/or low tube current protocols. (2) An optimal scan delay (Tdelay) for a venous phase caudocranial acquisition can be calculated by the following formula: Tdelay = CI + 25 - TSD, where CI is the duration of the contrast injection, 25 is the average of the sum of abdominal aortic and peak hepatic arrival times and TSD is the scan duration. With such an approach, the radiation exposure resulting from bolus tracking, albeit performed with low-dose scans, can be spared in patients with normal transit times.

Abstract:Introduction: Although various surgical techniques have been utilized in the reconstruction of severely resorbed alveolar bone, its regeneration is still regarded as a major challenge. Most of the surgical techniques used in advanced ridge augmentation have the disadvantages of prolonging the patient's edentulous healing and increasing the need for surgical revisits because simultaneous implant placement is not allowed. This report presents a new and simplified method for advanced ridge augmentation, which utilizes a vertical tenting device. Case Presentation: The first case presented the reconstruction of the mandibular posterior region with severely resorbed alveolar bone due to peri-implantitis using tenting pole abutment for ridge augmentation. The second and third cases presented three-dimensional ridge augmentations in severely resorbed ridges due to periodontitis. The last case presented horizontal ridge augmentation using a vertical tenting device. All cases were performed under local anesthesia. Implants were simultaneously placed in the bone defect area. A vertical tensioning device was then connected to the implant platform to minimize the collapse of the bone graft during the bone regeneration period due to the contraction of the soft tissue matrix. A sticky bone graft was transplanted onto the exposed surface of the implant and on top of the vertical tensioning device. After covering with an absorbable barrier membrane, the soft tissues were sutured without tension. Conclusions: In all cases, prosthetic restorations were provided to patients after a bone grafting period of 5–6 months, leading to a rapid restoration of masticatory function. Results tracked for up to 6 years revealed observed stable reconstruction of the alveolar bone. The use of a vertical tenting device can prevent the collapse of biomaterials in the augmented ridge during the healing period, leading to predictable outcomes when achieving three-dimensional ridge augmentation.

Abstract:Background: The purpose of this study was to compare clinical results of two different horizontal ridge augmentation techniques: guided bone regeneration with sticky bone (SB) and the bone-shell technique (BS). Methods: Records of patients who underwent horizontal ridge augmentation with SB (test) and BS (control) were screened for inclusion. Pre-operative and 6-month post-operative ridge widths were measured on cone beam computer tomography (CBCT) and compared. Post-operative complications and implant survival rate were recorded. Results: Eighty consecutive patients were included in the present study. Post-operative complications (flap dehiscence, and graft infection) occurred in ten patients, who dropped out from the study (12.5% complication rate). Stepwise multivariate logistic regression analysis showed a significant inverse correlation between the occurrence of post-operative complications and ridge width (p = 0.025). Seventy patients (35 test; 35 control) with a total of 127 implants were included in the final analysis. Mean ridge width gain was 3.7 ± 1.2 mm in the test and 3.7 ± 1.1 mm in the control group, with no significant difference between the two groups. No implant failure was recorded, with a mean follow-up of 42.7 ± 16.0 months after functional loading. Conclusions: SB and BS showed comparable clinical outcomes in horizontal ridge augmentation, resulting in sufficient crestal width increase to allow implant placement in an adequate bone envelope.

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of vertical guided bone regeneration (GBR) in the mandible utilizing a non-resorbable membrane and a bone graft combination of autogenous bone chips, and high-temperature processed (HTP) xenograft, through CT scans and microCT analysis. Materials and Methods: Patients underwent vertical ridge augmentation procedures prior to implant placement. The surgical procedure included flap elevation and placement of a bone graft comprising a 1:1 combination of autogenous posterior mandible-derived bone chips, and HTP xenograft graft particles covered with a d-PTFE membrane trimmed to suit the 3D shape of the bone defect. This was fastened securely with titanium screws and pins, and a layer of native collagen membrane. Post-operative complications and ridge measurements were assessed. Pre bone augmentation and pre implant placement bone parameters were obtained from CT scans. Biopsy specimens collected during implantation were examined by microCT. Results: All 13 study procedures were successful without any complications. The results revealed average vertical and horizontal bone gains of 3.35 mm and 5.15 mm respectively. A total of 33 implants were successfully placed in the augmented areas, without the need for further bone augmentation. MicroCT analysis revealed 48% bone, 15% filler material, and 37% non-calcified tissue in the augmented region compared to 65% bone, 3% filler material, and 32% non-calcified tissue in the pristine bone. Conclusions: A mixture of autogenous bone and HTP xenograft, covered with a d-PTFE membrane and a layer of native collagen membrane is effective for vertical GBR.

Abstract:Aim This case series aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the autologous circular cortical lamina‐anchoring (CCA) technique for horizontal bone augmentation in the maxillary aesthetic region. Materials and methods A total of 25 patients with 28 implants underwent horizontal bone augmentation using CCA followed by implant placement and crown delivery. The primary outcome measures were alveolar ridge width (ARW) and buccal bone thickness (BBT), whereas the secondary outcome measures included marginal bone loss (MBL), mid‐facial mucosal margin loss (MML), clinical assessment of peri‐implant and aesthetic parameters, patient‐reported outcome measures (PROMs), and implant survival rates. Results All 25 patients with 28 implants completed the treatment, no dropouts occurred. After CCA, the mean ARW at 1, 2, and 4 mm below the alveolar crest significantly increased from 2.38 ± 0.48, 2.85 ± 0.51, and 3.21 ± 0.53 mm to 6.80 ± 0.48, 6.99 ± 0.50, and 8.08 ± 0.52 mm, respectively. At the 3‐year follow‐up, the mean BBT0, BBT2, and BBT4 slightly decreased from 2.51 ± 0.26, 2.63 ± 0.31, and 2.75 ± 0.29 mm to 2.43 ± 0.27, 2.51 ± 0.30, and 2.64 ± 0.28 mm, respectively. Although the overall MBL was <0.15 mm, the results were statistically significant. The mean MML at the 3‐year follow‐up was 0.02 mm. All implant sites showed acceptable peri‐implant and aesthetic outcomes. Incisions healed without complications, and no significant differences in PROMs observed at any time point. The 3‐year follow‐up showed a 100% implant survival rate. Conclusion The autologous CCA technique is a useful method for increasing ARW and maintaining BBT in the maxillary aesthetic region.

Luteal function in hysterectomized goats.

Abstract:The secretory lifespan and functional activity of corpus luteum in hysterectomized goats was studied. 6 goats were hysterectomized 30-49 days after fertile mating. 15 mg progesterone was injected prior to surgery and venous blood was collected daily for 7 days postsurgery then every 2-5 days for 70 days and daily thereafter. 1 goat (30 days after mating) contained a dead embryo with autolyzed membranes and a regressing corpus luteum. The other 5 had normal corpora lutea and each had 1 or 2 live fetuses with normal membranes. Plasma progesterone decreased postsurgery over a period of 5-10 days remained somewhat constant for a variable length of time and then decreased to anestrus levels ( less than .05 ng/ml). This depression in luteal function suggested that the maintenance of full functional activity of corpus luteum in goats may be dependent on placental luteotrophin. In 3 of the goats the luteal lifespan exceeded that in intact pregnant animals suggesting that cessation of progesterone production is unlikely to be determined solely by a maternal hypothalamic factor.
Clinical evaluation of ridge augmentation using autogenous tooth bone graft material: case series study

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: Interest in bone graft material has increased with regard to restoration in cases of bone defect around the implant. Autogenous tooth bone graft material was developed and commercialized in 2008. In this study, we evaluated the results of vertical and horizontal ridge augmentation with autogenous tooth bone graft material.MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study targeted patients who had vertical or horizontal ridge augmentation using AutoBT from March 2009 to April 2010. We evaluated the age and gender of the subject patients, implant stability, adjunctive surgery, additional bone graft material and barrier membrane, post-operative complication, implant survival rate, and crestal bone loss.RESULTS: We performed vertical and horizontal ridge augmentation using powder- or block-type autogenous tooth bone graft material, and implant placement was performed on nine patients (male: 7, female: 2). The average age of patients was 49.88±12.98 years, and the post-operative follow-up period was 35±5.31 months. Post-operative complications included wound dehiscence (one case), hematoma (one case), and implant osseointegration failure (one case; survival rate: 96%); however, there were no complications related to bone graft material, such as infection. Average marginal bone loss after one-year loading was 0.12±0.19 mm. Therefore, excellent clinical results can be said to have been obtained.CONCLUSION: Excellent clinical results can be said to have been obtained with vertical and horizontal ridge augmentation using autogenous tooth bone graft material.
Horizontal Guided Bone Regeneration of the Posterior Mandible to Allow Implant Placement: 1‐Year Prospective Study Results

Abstract:Objective Assess whether horizontal ridge augmentation with guided bone regeneration (GBR) using deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM), autologous bone, and a resorbable collagen membrane supports successful implant placement. Materials and Methods This open, prospective, single‐cohort, multicenter clinical study included patients with ridge defects that required GBR prior to implant insertion. The primary endpoint was radiologically assessed bone gain after 8 months post‐GBR, measured at the center of planned implant sites. Secondary endpoints included implant survival and success, marginal bone levels (MBLs), MBL changes, and soft tissue health. Results Of 45 patients evaluated 8 months post‐GBR, nine experienced dehiscence in the first 3 weeks of the healing period. GBR led to radiologically determined mean bone width gain of 4.0 ± 1.5 mm and 4.8 ± 1.7 mm, measured 1 and 3 mm from the top of the crest, respectively, allowing successful implant placement in 44 patients (97.8%). The cumulative implant survival and success rates were 98.9% and 95.5%, respectively. MBLs were stable: −1.18 ± 0.64 mm at definitive prosthesis placement (DPP) and − 1.07 ± 0.74 mm at 1 year. Soft tissue health and esthetics (plaque and bleeding indices, papilla, keratinized mucosa, and pink esthetic score) improved from DPP to 1 year. Patients were highly satisfied with implant function and esthetics, and their oral health‐related quality of life improved. Conclusions GBR using DBBM and a collagen membrane offered a safe and effective treatment option for horizontal ridge augmentation sufficient to support implant‐based tooth rehabilitation. Elevated End-Tidal Pco2 During Long-Duration Spaceflight.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Elevated ambient Pco2 in the International Space Station (ISS) has been cited as a potential contributor to the vision impairment intracranial pressure syndrome (VIIP), a significant health risk for astronauts during long-duration space missions. The elevation in ambient Pco2 is rather modest and normal respiratory compensation could minimize the impact on arterial Pco2. METHODS In nine male astronauts, breaths measured prior to a rebreathing maneuver were examined to assess inspired and end-tidal Pco2 during upright seated preflight and in-flight conditions. RESULTS Inspired Pco2 increased from preflight baseline (0.6 ± 0.1 mmHg) to in flight (3.8 ± 0.4 mmHg). End-tidal Pco2 also increased from preflight baseline (36.0 ± 3.2 mmHg) to in flight (42.1 ± 3.7 mmHg). The difference between end-tidal Pco2 comparing in flight to preflight (6.1 ± 1.6 mmHg) was greater than the difference between inspired Pco2 comparing preflight to in flight (3.3 ± 0.5 mmHg). DISCUSSION The greater increase in end-tidal vs. inspired Pco2 might reflect alveolar hypoventilation due to differences in ventilatory control with spaceflight. These data suggest that further studies should focus on arterial Pco2 and acid-base balance to determine if CO2 dilates cerebral and retinal vessels and might contribute to the incidence of VIIP in astronauts. Integrating Ligand-Based and Protein-Centric Virtual Screening of Kinase Inhibitors Using Ensembles of Multiple Protein Kinase Genes and Conformations

Abstract:The rapidly growing wealth of structural and functional information about kinase genes and kinase inhibitors that is fueled by a significant therapeutic role of this protein family provides a significant impetus for development of targeted computational screening approaches. In this work, we explore an ensemble-based, protein-centric approach that allows for simultaneous virtual ligand screening against multiple kinase genes and multiple kinase receptor conformations. We systematically analyze and compare the results of ligand-based and protein-centric screening approaches using both single-receptor and ensemble-based docking protocols. A panel of protein kinase targets that includes ABL, EGFR, P38, CDK2, TK, and VEGFR2 kinases is used in this comparative analysis. By applying various performance metrics we have shown that ligand-centric shape matching can provide an effective enrichment of active compounds outperforming single-receptor docking screening. However, ligand-based approaches can be highly sensitive to the choice of inhibitor queries. Employment of multiple inhibitor queries combined with parallel selection ranking criteria can improve the performance and efficiency of ligand-based virtual screening. We also demonstrated that replica-exchange Monte Carlo docking with kinome-based ensembles of multiple crystal structures can provide a superior early enrichment on the kinase targets. The central finding of this study is that incorporation of the template-based structural information about kinase inhibitors and protein kinase structures in diverse functional states can significantly enhance the overall performance and robustness of both ligand and protein-centric screening strategies. The results of this study may be useful in virtual screening of kinase inhibitors potentially offering a beneficial spectrum of therapeutic activities across multiple disease states.

Abstract:Nowadays computerization is the most popular, reliable and flexible design for various types of control and communication systems. Sound navigation and ranging (SONAR) is a modern ultrasonic range finding technique used for collecting the information of a distant object without any physical contact. In this paper, a personal computer (PC) based active SONAR system is presented. The developed SONAR system contains both transmitter and receiver parts in the same module. A pair of 40 kHz piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers is used to transmit ultrasound toward the object and receive the reflected from the object respectively. A driver-software named CURF (Computerized Ultrasonic Range Finder) is developed for this system, using Turbo C language aimed at IBM PC and its clone machines. The CURF software provides necessary support for interfacing the developed hardware as well as desired calculations. A number of tests have been done and it is found that the performances of the developed system are good in terms of accuracy, simplicity, cost and power consumption.
Minimally Traumatic Alveolar Ridge Augmentation with a Tunnel Injectable Thermo-Sensitive Alginate Scaffold

Abstract:Injectable bone substitutes and techniques have been developed for use in minimally invasive procedures for bone augmentation. Objective : To develop a novel injectable thermo-sensitive alginate hydrogel (TSAH) as a scaffold to induce bone regeneration, using a minimally invasive tunnelling technique. Material and Methods : An injectable TSAH was prepared from a copolymer solution of 8.0 wt% Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) and 8.0 wt% AAlg-g-PNIPAAm. In vitro properties of the material, such as its microstructure and the sustained release of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2), were investigated. Then, with the subperiosteal tunnelling technique, this material, carrying rhBMP-2, was injected under the labial periosteum of the maxillary anterior alveolar ridge in a rabbit model. New bone formation was evaluated by means of X-ray, micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), fluorescence labelling, histological study, and immunohistochemistry study. Results : The material exhibited good injectability and thermo-irreversible properties. SEM showed an interconnected porous microstructure of the TSAH. The result of ALP activity indicated sustained delivery of BMP-2 from the TSAH from days 3 to 15. In a rabbit model, both TSAH and TSAH/rhBMP-2 induced alveolar ridge augmentation. The percentage of mineralised tissue in the TSAH/rhBMP-2 group (41.6±3.79%) was significantly higher than in the TSAH group (31.3±7.21%; p<0.05). The density of the regenerating tissue was higher in the TSAH/rhBMP-2 group than in the other groups (TSAH group, positive control, blank control; p<0.05). Conclusions : The TSAH provided convenient handling properties for clinical application. To some extent, TSAH could induce ridge augmentation and mineral deposition, which can be enhanced when combined with rhBMP-2 for a minimally invasive tunnelling injection.

Abstract:Aims (1) To assess the effectiveness of the Sausage TechniqueTM when applied for lateral bone augmentation by multiple experienced clinicians; (2) To identify risk indicators for a poor outcome and to assess the need for adjunctive surgery. Materials and Methods All patients who had been treated with the Sausage TechniqueTM for lateral bone augmentation by three experienced surgeons between January 2019 and December 2021 were included in a retrospective case series. The Sausage TechniqueTM technique includes the use of autogenous bone chips and deproteinized bovine bone mineral (1:1 ratio), covered with a stretched and pinned collagen membrane. The increase in alveolar width between the pre‐operative situation and 9 months was assessed at different levels on superimposed cone‐beam CT scans. Results Twenty‐five augmentations performed in 25 patients (17 males, 8 females, mean age 51 years) were available for evaluation. Vertical-guided bone regeneration with a titanium-reinforced d-PTFE membrane utilizing a novel split-thickness flap design: a prospective case series

Abstract:Objectives: To evaluate the feasibility of a newly proposed minimally invasive split-thickness flap design without vertical-releasing incisions for vertical bone regeneration performed in either a simultaneous or staged approach and to analyze the prevalence of adverse events during postoperative healing. Materials and methods: Following preparation of a split-thickness flap and bilaminar elevation of the mucosa and underlying periosteum, the alveolar bone was exposed over the defects, vertical GBR was performed by means of a titanium-reinforced high-density polytetrafluoroethylene membrane combined with particulated autogenous bone (AP) and bovine-derived xenograft (BDX) in 1:1 ratio. At 9 months after reconstructive surgery, vertical and horizontal hard tissue gain was evaluated based on clinical and radiographic examination. Results: Twenty-four vertical alveolar ridge defects in 19 patients were treated with vertical GBR. In case of 6 surgical sites, implant placement was performed at the time of the GBR (simultaneous group); in the remaining 18 surgical, sites implant placement was performed 9 months after the ridge augmentation (staged group). After uneventful healing in 23 cases, hard tissue fill was detected in each site. Direct clinical measurements confirmed vertical and horizontal hard tissue gain averaging 3.2 ± 1.9 mm and 6.5 ± 0.5 mm respectively, in the simultaneous group and 4.5 ± 2.2 mm and 8.7 ± 2.3 mm respectively, in the staged group. Additional radiographic evaluation based on CBCT data sets in the staged group revealed mean vertical and horizontal hard tissue fill of 4.2 ± 2.0 mm and 8.5 ± 2.4 mm. Radiographic volume gain was 1.1 ± 0.4 cm3. Conclusion: Vertical GBR consisting of a split-thickness flap and using titanium-reinforced non-resorbable membrane in conjunction with a 1:1 mixture of AP+BDX may lead to a predictable vertical and horizontal hard tissue reconstruction. Clinical relevance: The used split-thickness flap design may represent a valuable approach to increase the success rate of vertical GBR, resulting in predicable hard tissue regeneration, and favorable wound healing with low rate of membrane exposure.
A new technique of alveolar bone augmentation: "Pack into Bone". A retrospective case-series study

Abstract:Purpose: To provide an overview of an innovative surgical approach to guided bone regeneration, the Pack Into Bone (PIB) technique. Methods: Twenty subjects, eight men and 12 women, aged 34 to 68 (mean 51.5) were selected. They were treated with the PiB technique, and upon re-entry surgery, performed 8 months postoperatively, implants were placed, and bone samples were collected by using trephine burs for histological and histomorphometric analysis purposes. Results: Mean ridge width varied between 4.71 (W0) mm and 7.37 mm (W1), measured 8 months postoperatively, with a mean W augmentation of 2.69 mm ± 0.19. Mean height ranged between 8.0 mm (H0) and 11.15 mm (H1), measured 8 months after surgery with a mean augmentation of 3.53 mm ± 0.14 (P< 0.05). Clinical significance: Stability and versatility are the pillars of the PIB technique compared to common GBRs. The PIB technique is effective and reduces the difficulty in stabilizing the graft, is more feasible for operators, and decreases morbidity for the subjects.
