Abstract:We provide sufficient conditions for two subgroups of a hierarchically hyperbolic group to generate an amalgamated free product over their intersection. The result applies in particular to certain geometric subgroups of mapping class groups of finite-type surfaces, that is, those subgroups coming from the embeddings of closed subsurfaces. In the second half of the paper, we study under which hypotheses our amalgamation procedure preserves several notions of convexity in HHS, such as hierarchical quasiconvexity (as introduced by Behrstock, Hagen, and Sisto) and strong quasiconvexity (every quasigeodesic with endpoints on the subset lies in a uniform neighbourhood). This answers a question of Russell, Spriano, and Tran.

Amalgamation in Semilinear Residuated Lattices

Abstract:We survey the state of the art on amalgamation in varieties of semilinear residuated lattices. Our discussion emphasizes two prominent cases from which much insight into the general picture may be gleaned: idempotent varieties and their generalizations ($n$-potent varieties, knotted varieties), and cancellative varieties and their relatives (MV-algebras, BL-algebras). Along the way, we illustrate how general-purpose tools developed to study amalgamation can be brought to bear in these contexts and solve some of the remaining open questions concerning amalgamation in semilinear varieties. Among other things, we show that the variety of commutative semilinear residuated lattices does not have the amalgamation property. Taken as a whole, we see that amalgamation is well understood in most interesting varieties of semilinear residuated lattices, with the last few outstanding open questions remaining principally in the cancellative setting.

Abstract:We extend previous work on Hrushovski's stabilizer's theorem and prove a measure-theoretic version of a well-known result of Pillay-Scanlon-Wagner on products of three types. This generalizes results of Gowers on products of three sets and yields model-theoretic proofs of existing asymptotic results for quasirandom groups. We also obtain a model-theoretic proof of Roth's theorem on the existence of arithmetic progressions of length $3$ for subsets of positive density in suitable definably amenable groups, such as countable amenable abelian groups without involutions and ultraproducts of finite abelian groups of odd order.

Abstract:In this paper we describe the amalgamated free product of two hyperfinite von Neumann algebras over a finite dimensional subalgebra. In general the free product is a finite direct sum of interpolated free group factors and a hyperfinite von Neumann algebra. We then show that the class of von Neumann algebras of this form is closed under taking amalgamated free products over finite dimensional subalgebras.

Higher Specht bases and $q$-series for the cohomology rings of certain Hessenberg varieties

Abstract:It is conjectured (following the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture) that the cohomology rings of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties yield permutation representations, but the decompositions of the modules are only known in some cases. For the Hessenberg function $h=(h(1),n,\ldots,n)$, the structure of the cohomology ring was determined by Abe, Horiguchi, and Masuda in 2017. We define two new bases for this cohomology ring, one of which is a higher Specht basis, and the other of which is a permutation basis. We also examine the transpose Hessenberg variety, indexed by the Hessenberg function $h' = ((n-1)^{n-m},n^m)$, and show that analogous results hold. Further, we give combinatorial bijections between the monomials in the new basis and sets of $P$-tableaux, motivated by the work of Gasharov, illustrating the connections between the $\mathfrak{S}_n$ action on these cohomology rings and the Schur expansion of chromatic symmetric functions.

Abstract:A semigroup amalgam (S; T1, T2) is known to be non-embeddable if T1 and T2 are both groups (completely regular semigroups, Clifford semigroups) but S is not such. We prove some non-embeddability conditions for semigroup amalgams (S; T1, T2) in which T1 and T2 are inverse semigroups but S is not such. We also introduce some sufficient conditions that make the inverse hulls of the copies of S in T1 and T2 isomorphic; making, in turn, the amalgam (S; T1, T2) weakly embeddable.

Abstract:We provide sufficient conditions for a free amalgamated product of torsionfree nilpotent groups to be residually nilpotent. We also characterise the residual nilpotence of certain higher-dimensional amalgams of unipotent groups over the rationals (known as KMS groups) in terms of their defining Cartan matrix. As an application, we give a normal form for the elements of a minimal Kac-Moody group over the rationals.

Abstract:A group is called matricial field (MF) if it admits finite dimensional approximate unitary representations which are approximately faithful and approximately contained in the left regular representation. Abstract:This paper has two main goals. First, we prove nonabelian refinements of basechange theorems in étale cohomology (i.e., prove analogues of the classical statements for sheaves of spaces). Second, we apply these theorems to prove a number of results about the étale homotopy type. Specifically, we prove nonabelian refinements of the smooth basechange theorem, Huber-Gabber affine analogue of the proper basechange theorem, and Fujiwara-Gabber rigidity theorem. Our methods also recover Chough's nonabelian refinement of the proper basechange theorem. Transporting an argument of Bhatt-Mathew to the nonabelian setting, we apply nonabelian proper basechange to show that the profinite étale homotopy type satisfies arc-descent. Using nonabelian smooth and proper basechange and descent, we give rather soft proofs of a number of Künneth formulas for the étale homotopy type.

Abstract:The last thirty years has seen dramatic progress in representation theory due in part to the introduction of some remarkable bases, first for the group algebras of Weyl groups, and second for the universal enveloping algebras of semisimple Lie algebras. These bases are the Kazhdan-Lusztig bases from [7], and Lusztig’s canonical bases originating in [10] (which are Kashiwara’s global crystal bases), respectively. Their construction relies crucially on certain deformed versions of the underlying algebras, namely, Iwahori-Hecke algebras of Weyl groups and the Drinfeld-Jimbo quantized enveloping algebras.

Abstract:Stallings folding theory is modified, using double coset representatives, and to applied to the study of subgroups of amalgamated products of finite rank free groups. As a first application the subgroup membership problem for such groups is shown to be decidable. An algorithm for this problem is constructed and its complexity is analysed. Groups in this class are also shown to possess the Howson property.

Abstract:Let $f:R\to S$ be a ring homomorphism and $J$ be an ideal of $S$. Then the subring $R\bowtie^fJ:=\{(r,f(r)+j)\mid r\in R$ and $j\in J\}$ of $R\times S$ is called the amalgamation of $R$ with $S$ along $J$ with respect to $f$. In this paper, we will deepen the study of the prime spectrum of the amalgamations and characterize when $R\bowtie^fJ$ is a pm-ring. We also investigate the transfer of compactly packed and properly zipped property on amalgamated constructions.

Abstract:The proalgebraic fundamental group of a connected topological space $X$, recently introduced by the first author, is an affine group scheme whose representations classify local systems of finite-dimensional vector spaces on $X$. In this article, we further develop the theory of the proalgebraic fundamental group, in particular, we establish homotopy invariance and a Seifert-van Kampen theorem. To facilitate the latter, we study amalgamated free product of affine group schemes. We also compute the proalgebraic fundamental group of the arithmetically relevant Kucharcyzk-Scholze spaces and compare it to the motivic Galois group.

Abstract:Let $\H_n$ be the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of the symmetric group $S_n$, and let $Z(\H_n)$ denote its centre. Let $B={b_1,b_2,...,b_t}$ be a basis for $Z(\H_n)$ over $R=\Z[q,q^{-1}]$. Then $B$ is called \emph{multiplicative} if, for every $i$ and $j$, there exists $k$ such that $b_ib_j= b_k$. In this article we prove that there are no multiplicative bases for $Z(\Z S_n)$ and $Z(\H_n)$ when $n\ge 3$. In addition, we prove that there exist exactly two multiplicative bases for $Z(\Z S_2)$ and none for $Z(\H_2)$.

Abstract:The classical Klein-Maskit combination theorems provide sufficient conditions to construct new Kleinian groups using old ones. There are two distinct but closely related combination theorems: The first deals with amalgamated free products, whereas the second deals with HNN extensions. This article gives analogs of both combination theorems for Anosov subgroups.

Abstract:Let A and B be C*-algebras whose quotients are all RFD, and let C be a central C*-subalgebra in both A and B. We prove that the full amalgamated free product of A and B over C is then RFD. This generalizes Korchagin's result that amalgamated free products of commutative C*-algebras are RFD. When applied to the case of a trivial amalgam, our methods recover the result of Exel-Loring for separable C*-algebras. As corollaries to our theorem, we give sufficient conditions for amalgamated free products of maximally almost periodic (MAP) groups to have RFD C*-algebras and hence to be MAP.
