Abstract:We study stability of amalgamated free products and HNN extensions of stable groups over finite groups. We focus on operator norm stability, Hilbert-Schmidt stability and stability in permutations. We provide many new examples of stable (or flexibly stable) non-amenable groups.

Abstract:With a minor change made in the previous construction we observe that any reduced HNN extension is precisely a compressed algebra of a certain reduced amalgamated free product in both the von Neumann algebra and the $C^*$-algebra settings. It is also pointed out that the same fact holds true even for universal HNN extensions of C$^*$-algebras. We apply the observation to the questions of factoriality and type classification of HNN extensions of von Neumann algebras and also those of simplicity and $K$-theory of (reduced or universal) HNN extensions of $C^*$-algebras.

Abstract:Gromov asked whether an asymptotic cone of a finitely generated group was always simply connected or had uncountable fundamental group. We prove that Gromov's dichotomy holds for asympotic cones with cut points, as well as, HNN extensions and amalgamated products where the associated subgroups are nicely embedded. We also show a slightly weaker dichotomy for multiple HNN extensions of free groups.

Abstract:In 1971 J. Stallings introduced a generalisation of amalgamated products of groups -- called a pregroup, which is a particular kind of a partial group. He defined the universal group U(P) of a pregroup P to be a universal object (in the sense of category theory) extending the partial operations on P to group operations on U(P). This turns out to be a versatile and convenient generalisation of classical group constructions: HNN-extensions and amalgamated products. In this respect the following general question arises. Which properties of pregroups, or relations between pregroups, carry over to the respective universal groups? In this paper it is proved that universal equivalence of pregroups extends to universal equivalence of universal groups. Applications to free products with amalgamation and HNN-extensions are then described.

Abstract:We calculate the rank gradient and p-gradient of free products, free products with amalgamation over an amenable subgroup, and HNN extensions with an amenable associated subgroup. The notion of cost is used to compute the rank gradient of amalgamated free products and HNN extensions. For the p-gradient the Kurosh subgroup theorems for amalgamated free products and HNN extensions will be used.

Abstract:In this paper we describe the amalgamated free product of two hyperfinite von Neumann algebras over a finite dimensional subalgebra. In general the free product is a finite direct sum of interpolated free group factors and a hyperfinite von Neumann algebra. We then show that the class of von Neumann algebras of this form is closed under taking amalgamated free products over finite dimensional subalgebras.

Abstract:We classify finitely generated, residually finite automorphism-induced HNN-extensions in terms of the residual separability of a single associated subgroup. This classification provides a method to construct automorphism-induced HNN-extensions which are not residually finite. We prove that this method can never yield a "new" counter-example to Gromov's conjecture on the residual finiteness of hyperbolic groups.

Abstract:We study the character theory of diagonal products as well as alternating and elementary enrichments of groups. Our motivation is to show Hilbert-Schmidt stability for various diagonal products, including the classical family of B. H. Neumann groups. Additionally, we initiate a quantitative study of Hilbert-Schmidt stability for infinitely presented groups, through the notion of stability radius growth, and exhibit an uncountable family of Hilbert-Schmidt stable amenable groups with arbitrarily large such growth. Some applications to local Hilbert-Schmidt stability are also provided.

Abstract:Stallings folding theory is modified, using double coset representatives, and to applied to the study of subgroups of amalgamated products of finite rank free groups. As a first application the subgroup membership problem for such groups is shown to be decidable. An algorithm for this problem is constructed and its complexity is analysed. Groups in this class are also shown to possess the Howson property.

Abstract:We investigate the use of Popa's asymptotic orthogonality to establish maximal amenability for amalgamated free product von Neumann algebras. Although new techniques have recently been developed to consider amalgamated free products, we find that the technique developed by Popa in the 1980s can be used to demonstrate maximal amenability for a certain family of amalgamated free product von Neumann algebras.

Abstract:We provide sufficient conditions for a free amalgamated product of torsionfree nilpotent groups to be residually nilpotent. We also characterise the residual nilpotence of certain higher-dimensional amalgams of unipotent groups over the rationals (known as KMS groups) in terms of their defining Cartan matrix. As an application, we give a normal form for the elements of a minimal Kac-Moody group over the rationals.

Abstract:Let $G$ be the generalized free product of two groups with an amalgamated subgroup. We propose an approach that allows one to use results on the residual $p$-finiteness of $G$ for proving that this generalized free product is residually a finite nilpotent group or residually a finite metanilpotent group. This approach can be applied under most of the conditions on the amalgamated subgroup that allow the study of residual $p$-finiteness. Namely, we consider the cases where the amalgamated subgroup is a) periodic, b) locally cyclic, c) central in one of the free factors, d) normal in both free factors, or e) is a retract of one of the free factors. In each of these cases, we give certain necessary and sufficient conditions for $G$ to be residually a) a finite nilpotent group, b) a finite metanilpotent group.

Abstract:The main result in this paper is the failure of the finitely generated intersection property (FGIP) of ascending HNN extensions of non-cyclic finite rank free groups. This class of group consists of free-by-cyclic groups and properly ascending HNN extensions of free groups. We also give a sufficient condition for the failure of the FGIP in the context of relative hyperbolicity, we apply this to free-by-cyclic groups of exponential growth.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of local Hilbert--Schmidt stability, motivated by the recent definition by Bradford of local permutation stability, and give examples of (non-residually finite) groups that are locally Hilbert--Schmidt stable but not Hilbert--Schmidt stable. For amenable groups, we provide a criterion for local Hilbert--Schmidt stability in terms of group characters, by analogy with the character criterion of Hadwin and Shulman for Hilbert--Schmidt stable amenable groups. Furthermore, we study the (very) flexible analogues of local Hilbert--Schmidt stability, and we prove several results analogous to the classical setting. Finally, we prove that infinite sofic, respectively hyperlinear, property (T) groups are never locally permutation stable, respectively locally Hilbert--Schmidt stable. This strengthens the result of Becker and Lubotzky for classical stability, and answers a question of Lubotzky.
