Abstract:Statement of problem: Several additively and subtractively manufactured resin-based materials indicated for interim and definitive fixed dental prostheses have been launched. However, knowledge of the bond strength of these materials to different implant abutment materials is limited. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of additively and subtractively manufactured resin-based materials to different implant abutment materials. Material and methods: One hundred and ten disk-shaped specimens (Ø3×3 mm) were fabricated either additively from 2 resins indicated for definitive use (Crowntec; AM_CT and VarseoSmile Crown Plus; AM_VS) and 1 resin indicated for interim use (FREEPRINT temp; AM_FP) or subtractively from a nanographene-reinforced polymethyl methacrylate (G-CAM; SM_GC) and a high-impact polymer composite (breCAM.HIPC; SM_BC). After allocating 2 specimens from each group for scanning electron microscope evaluation, the specimens were divided according to the abutment material (CopraPeek; polyetheretherketone, PEEK and Dentium Superline Pre-Milled Abutment; titanium, Ti) (n=10). All specimens were airborne-particle abraded with 50-µm aluminum oxide. After applying a resin primer (Visio.link) to PEEK and an adhesive primer (Clearfil Ceramic Primer Plus) to Ti specimens, a self-adhesive resin cement (PANAVIA SA Cement Universal) was used for cementation. All specimens were stored in distilled water (24 hours, 37 °C), and a universal testing device was used for the SBS test. SBS data were analyzed with 2-way analysis of variance and Tukey honestly significant difference tests, while the chi-squared test was used to evaluate the difference among the abutment-resin pairs in terms of failure modes (α=.05). Results: The interaction between the material type and the abutment type and the main factor of material type affected the SBS (P<.001). SM_BC-PEEK and SM_GC had the lowest SBS followed by SM_BC-Ti, whereas AM_VS-PEEK had the highest SBS (P≤.001). AM_CT-Ti had higher SBS than AM_FP-PEEK (P=.026). SM_GC had the lowest and AM_VS had the highest SBS, while AM_CT and AM_FP had higher SBS than SM_BC (P≤.004). The distribution of failure modes was significantly different among tested material-abutment pairs, and only for AM_CT among tested materials (P≤.025). Most of the material-abutment pairs had a minimum of 80% adhesive failures. Conclusions: Regardless of the abutment material, additively manufactured specimens had higher bond strength and one of the subtractively manufactured materials (SM_GC) mostly had lower bond strength. The abutment material had a small effect on the bond strength. Adhesive failures were observed most frequently.
Improving the bonding stability between resin cements and zirconia-based ceramic using different surface treatments

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the effects of airborne-particle abrasion with alumina particles or silicamodified alumina particles on the bond strength between zirconia and conventional MDP-based (Ph; Panavia F 2.0, Kuraray) or self-adhesive (SA; RelyX U200, 3M ESPE) resin cements. Materials and methods: Five surface treatments were evaluated: C = no surface treatment; AB = airborne-particle abrasion with alumina particles (BIO-ART Dental Supplies and Equipment); ABP = AB combined with MDP-based primer (Alloy Primer, Kuraray); SS = airborne-particle abrasion with silica-modified alumina particles (CoJet, 3M ESPE) combined with silane (RelyX Ceramic Primer, 3M ESPE); and SSP = SS combined with MDP-based primer. The surface roughness (Ra) of the airborne particle-abraded samples (n = 5) was measured by a contact profilometer (Mitutoyo Surftest SJ-401, Mitutoyo). Cylinders of the resin cements tested were bonded to the surface-treated zirconia. The microshear test was performed by the application of a load with a wire loop parallel to the adhesive interface until debonding of the resin cement cylinders. The microshear bond strength (μSBS) of the samples was measured before and after being subjected to thermocycling (TC; 5°C to 55°C, 60 seconds dwell time for 3,000 cycles; MSCT, Marcelo Nucci). One-way (Ra) and two-way (μSBS) analysis of variance followed by Tukey post hoc test (α = .05) were used. Results: The SS (Ph: 12.6 MPa; Ph-TC: 6.37 MPa; SA: 11.8 MPa; SA-TC: 9.37) and SSP (Ph: 10.4 MPa; Ph-TC: 5.82 MPa; SA: 10.4 MPa; SA-TC: 10.0) surface treatments produced the highest surface roughness values (P < .001). The SS samples achieved the highest immediate bond strength for both resin cements. However, after TC, SA resin cement associated with any surface treatment produced the highest bond strength values. Conclusion: The self-adhesive resin cement promoted higher and more stable bond strength values when associated with a surface roughening method.

Abstract:PURPOSE: Dental implants have been shown to have predictable success, but esthetic complications often arise. To reduce tissue shadowing from titanium, zirconia abutments may be used; however, the literature suggests that the use of zirconia leads to greater destruction of the implant interface that may result in biological complications such as titanium tattoos and heavy metal toxicity. Previous studies have examined the mechanical aspects of this implant/abutment relationship, but they have not accounted for the corrosive degradation that also takes place in the dynamic environment of the oral cavity. This study investigated the combined effect of both wear and corrosion on the materials at the implant and abutment interface.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a simulated oral tribocorrosive environment, titanium (Ti) and zirconia (Zr) abutment materials were slid against titanium and Roxolid implant alloys. The four couplings (Ti/Ti, Ti/Rox, Zr/Ti, Zr/Rox) were selected for the tribocorrosion tests (N = 3). The testing was conducted for 25K cycles, and the coefficient of friction (CoF) and voltage evolution were recorded simultaneously. Following the tribocorrosion assays, the wear volume loss was calculated, and surface characterization was performed. Statistical analysis was completed using a one-way ANOVA followed by post-hoc Bonferroni comparisons.RESULTS: Zr/Ti groups had the highest CoF (1.1647), and Ti/Ti had the lowest (0.5033). The Zr/Ti coupling generated significantly more mechanical damage than the Ti/Ti group (p = 0.021). From the corrosion aspect, the Ti/Ti groups had the highest voltage drop (0.802 V), indicating greater corrosion susceptibility. In comparison, the Zr/Roxolid group had the lowest voltage drop (0.628 V) and significantly less electrochemical degradation (p = 0.019). Overall, the Ti/Ti group had the largest wear volume loss (15.1 × 107 μm3 ), while the Zr/Ti group had the least volume loss (2.26 × 107 μm3 ). Both zirconia couplings had significantly less wear volume than the titanium couplings (p < 0.001).CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the synergistic interaction between wear and corrosion, which occurs when masticatory forces combine with the salivary environment of the oral cavity. Overall, the zirconia groups outperformed the titanium groups. In fact, the titanium groups generated 5 to 6 times more wear to the implant alloys as compared with the zirconia counterparts. The best performing group was Zr/Ti, and the worst performing group was Ti/Ti.

Abstract:Viral infections of the labyrinth have been considered a major source of auditory and vestibular system pathology. However, the involvement of virus in the development of immune reactions responsible for immunomediated inner ear disease has not been studied enough. Following viral infection, an effector immune response, humoral (B cell) and/or cytotoxic (T cell) is directed against a virus and it might cross-react with self-protein or autoantigen, evoking an autoimmune response. Since clinically it can be very difficult to establish a viral etiology for such disorders, serologic studies can be used to confirm the suspected diagnosis. Patients affected by immunomediated inner ear disease that had presented an upper respiratory tract infection underwent an immunologic workup study including microbiological study. After the application of this diagnostic protocol, only one patient, that was subsequently diagnosed with Cogan’s syndrome, showed a positive serological test for viral infection. On the basis of the low efficacy of serological testing and due to the lack of evidence, we do not recommend to carry out serologic studies for viral infection.

Abstract:Statement of problem: Although bonding is important for long-term clinical success, studies on the bonding of additively manufactured ceramics are sparse. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the influence of manufacturing methods, additive (LCM) versus subtractive (CAM). and ceramic materials, zirconia (ZrO2) and lithium disilicate (LiSi), on the tensile bond strength (TBS), failure mode, and surface roughness of ceramics. Material and methods: A total of 240 ceramic specimens (n=60/group; 2×2×10 mm) were prepared. Two additively manufactured (LCM-printed) ceramics, LiSi and ZrO2 (Lithoz), subtractively manufactured LiSi (IPS e.max CAD), and subtractively manufactured ZrO2 (KATANA Zirconia HTML PLUS) were evaluated. From each material, 40 specimens were bonded together (n=20 ceramic-ceramic specimens/group), and 20 specimens were bonded to equally sized human dentin specimens (n=20 ceramic-dentin specimens/group). The ZrO2 specimens were airborne-particle abraded (Al2O3, 50 µm, 0.1 MPa), and the LiSi specimens were etched with hydrofluoric acid. Then, a universal primer (Monobond Plus) was applied. After the dentin was coated with an etch-and-rinse adhesive (Syntac Classic), the specimens were bonded with luting composite resin (Variolink Esthetic DC), light polymerized for 40 seconds, thermally aged (10 000 cycles between 5 °C and 55 °C), tested for TBS, and statistically analyzed (1- and 3-way ANOVA and Weibull analysis). The ceramic surface was examined with scanning electron microscopy, and surface roughness was measured with digital microscopy before and after surface pretreatment. Results: TBS varied between 5.88 ±2.22 MPa and 6.34 ±2.26 MPa in the ceramic-dentin groups and 12.40 ±1.56 MPa and 18.82 ±5.92 MPa in the ceramic-ceramic groups. No significant difference was observed regarding the manufacturing method and material for different bonding conditions (P>.05). Additive and subtractive LiSi showed the highest reliability with m=18.27. The ceramic-ceramic specimens failed cohesively in the luting composite resin, whereas the ceramic-dentin specimens failed adhesively. Conclusions: The manufacturing method and material used had little effect on bond strength values or surface properties. The recently introduced printed materials performed similarly to conventionally milled materials.

Abstract:We present the absolute frequency measurement of the transition 1S<inf>0</inf> – 3P<inf>0</inf> at 578 nm in ytterbium 171 realized in an optical lattice frequency standard relative to the cryogenic caesium fountain ITCsF2. The measurement result is 518 295 836 590 863.59(31) Hz with a relative standard uncertainty of 5.9 × 10−16. A contribution of 1.6 × 10−16 is coming from the ytterbium clock and we are working to reduce this contribution to the 1 × 10−17 level.
SYSTEMIC INFLAMMATION INCREASES INTESTINAL PERMEABILITY DURING EXPERIMENTAL HUMAN ENDOTOXEMIA

Abstract:Although the gut is often considered the motor of sepsis, the relation between systemic inflammation and intestinal permeability in humans is not clear. We analyzed intestinal permeability during experimental endotoxemia in humans. Before and during experimental endotoxemia (Escherichia coli LPS, 2 ng/kg), using polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a permeability marker, intestinal permeability was analyzed in 14 healthy subjects. Enterocyte damage was determined by intestinal fatty acid binding protein. Endotoxemia induced an inflammatory response. Urinary PEGs 1,500 and 4,000 recovery increased from 38.8 ± 6.3 to 63.1 ± 12.5 and from 0.58 ± 0.31 to 3.11 ± 0.93 mg, respectively (P < 0.05). Intestinal fatty acid binding protein excretion was not affected by endotoxemia. The peak serum IL-10 concentrations correlated with the increase in PEG 1,500 recovery (r = 0.48, P = 0.027). Systemic inflammation results in an increased intestinal permeability. The increase in intestinal permeability is most likely caused by inflammation-induced paracellular permeability, rather than ischemia-mediated enterocyte damage.
Bonding Performance of Surface-Treated Zirconia Cantilevered Resin-Bonded Fixed Dental Prostheses: In Vitro Evaluation and Finite Element Analysis

Abstract:Debonding of zirconia cantilevered resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs) remains the main treatment complication, therefore, the present in vitro study aimed to evaluate the effect of different surface pretreatments on the bonding of zirconia RBFDPs. Eighty milled zirconia maxillary central incisors, with complementary zirconia cantilevered RBFDPs, were randomly subjected to four different surface pretreatments (n = 20): as-machined (AM); airborne-particle abraded (APA); coated with nanostructured alumina coating (NAC); incisor air-abraded and RBFDP coated (NAC_APA). After bonding, half of each group (n = 10) was stored in deionized water (150 days/37 °C), thermocycled (37,500 cycles, 5–55 °C), and cyclically loaded (50 N/1.2 × 106). Load-bearing capacity (LBC) was determined using a quasi-static test. Additionally, finite element analysis (FEA) and fractography were performed. t-test and one-way ANOVA were used for statistical-analysis. Before aging, the NAC group provided superior LBC to other groups (p < 0.05). After aging, the AM specimens debonded spontaneously, while other groups exhibited comparable LBC (p ˃ 0.05). The FEA results correlated with the in vitro experiment and fractography, showing highly stressed areas in the bonding interface, cement layer, and in RBFDP's retainer wing and connector. The NAC RBFDPs exhibited comparable long-term bonding performance to APA and should be regarded as a zirconia pretreatment alternative to APA.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: Establishing a reliable bond to zirconia-based materials has proven to be difficult which is the major limitation against fabricating adhesive zirconia restorations. This bond could be improved using novel selective infiltration etching conditioning in combination with engineered zirconia primers. Aim of the work was to evaluate resin-to-zirconia bond strength using selective infiltration etching and novel silane-based zirconia primers.METHODS: Zirconia discs (Procera Zirconia) received selective infiltration etching surface treatment followed by coating with either of five especially engineered experimental zirconia primers. Pre-aged resin-composite discs (Tetric Ivo Ceram) were bonded to the treated surface using an MDP-containing resin-composite (Panavia F 2.0). The bilayered specimens were cut into microbars and the microtensile bond strength (MTBS) was evaluated. 'As-sintered' zirconia discs served as a control (alpha=0.05). The broken microbars were examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM).RESULTS: The combination of selective infiltration etching with experimental zirconia primers significantly improved (F=3805, P<0.0001) the MTBS values (41+/-5.8 MPa) compared to the 'as-sintered' surface using the same primers which demonstrated spontaneous failure and very low bond strength values (2.6+/-3.1 MPa). SEM analysis revealed that selective infiltration etching surface treatment resulted in a nano-retentive surface where the zirconia primers were able to penetrate and interlock which explained the higher MTBS values observed for the treated specimens.

Abstract:Background/purpose: The bond strength and durability of highly translucent zirconia ceramics to dentin is still unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of various surface treatments on the bond strength of self-adhesive resin cements to high-translucent zirconia crowns and dentin.Materials and methods: A high-transparent zirconia and three self-adhesive resin cements (G-CEM LinkAce (GCL), RelyX U200 (RXU) and TotalCem (TTC)) were used. The zirconia surface was sandblasted with 50 μm alumina particles or coated with an SR Link primer, while a dentin primer (Tetric N-Bond Universal, TBU) was applied to the surface of the dentin. By using three self-adhesive resin cements, zirconia samples were bonded to the dentin surfaces of human teeth. The shear strength of the specimens was measured before and after 10,000-cycle thermocycling or 90-day aging.Results: When using GCL to bond with the untreated dentin and various zirconia surfaces, the shear bond strength of the sandblasted (ZSB) and RS Link primer-coated (ZLK) groups was significantly higher than that of the untreated control group (Zc). However, in the case of TBU-treated dentin, the shear strength of the ZSB + LK + DTBU group was significantly higher than that of the other groups. After thermocycling and aging, the shear strength of the ZSB + LK + DTBU group using GCL and RXU cements decreased slightly, while the TTC showed no impact.Conclusion: The zirconia surface pretreated by sandblasting and bonding agent, which was sequentially bonded with a primer-treated dentin by using resin cements, can provide excellent shear bond strength and anti-aging performance.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: To investigate the type of failure and fracture resistance behaviour of different zirconia and titanium implant/abutment systems for anterior application.METHODS: Eight groups of implant-abutment combinations (n=8/system) were restored with identical full-contour zirconia crowns. The systems represented one-piece and multi-piece zirconia (Z) or titanium (T) implants/abutments with different types of connection (screwed=S, bonded=B). The following combinations (implant-abutment-connection) were investigated: ZZS, ZZB, ZZZB (three-piece), ZTS, TTS, TTS reference, and Z (one-piece, 2×). To simulate clinical anterior loading situations the specimens were mounted into the chewing simulator at an angle of 135° and subjected to thermal cycling (2×3000×5°/55°C) and mechanical loading (1.2×10(6)×50N; 1.6Hz). Fracture resistance and maximum bending stress were determined for all specimens that survived ageing. Data were statistically analyzed with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov-test and one-way ANOVA (α=0.05). Survival performance was calculated with the Kaplan-Meier Log-Rank test.RESULTS: Independent of the material combinations screwed systems showed partly failures of the screws during simulation (ZZS: 3×, ZTS: 8×, TTS: 3×). Screw failures were combined with implant/abutment fractures of zirconia systems. Zirconia one-piece implants and the reference system did not show any failures, and only one specimen of the systems with a bonded connection (ZZZB) fractured. Mean (±standard deviation) fracture forces and maximum bending stresses differed significantly (p=0.000) between 187.4±42.0N/250.0±56.0N/mm(2) (ZZZB) and 524.3±43.1N/753.0±61.0N/mm(2) (Z).CONCLUSIONS: Both material (zirconia or titanium) and the type of connection influenced failure resistance during fatigue testing, fracture force, and maximum bending stress.CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Different material combinations for implants and abutments as well as different types of connection achieved acceptable or even good failure and fracture resistance that may be satisfactory for anterior clinical application.

Abstract:This laboratory study was conducted to evaluate and compare the resin bond strength of different adhesive resin systems in different combinations and the durability of their bonds with zirconia ceramic. Materials and methods: One hundred and twenty-eight specimens were milled from 3Y-TZP zirconia ceramic. The bonding surfaces of all disks were wet polished, steam cleaned, airborne-particle abraded and ultrasonically cleaned in 99% isopropanol. The specimens were randomly divided into four main groups according to the applied resin system; two conventional and two self-adhesive systems were used. Each group was further subdivided into two subgroups; the first was conditioned with the specified primer for conventional luting resins or not conditioned for the self-adhesive systems, whereas the second subgroup of each was conditioned with the same phosphate monomer-containing primer (Alloy Primer). The zirconia specimens were adhesively bonded, using the allocated luting resin, to plexiglass tubes filled with self-curing composite resin (Clearfil FII). Half of the specimens of each subgroup were stored in distilled water at 37 °C for 3 days, whereas the other half were subjected to artificial aging, 150 days of storage and additional thermal cycling. Thereafter, all specimens were subjected to TBS testing using a universal testing machine. Statistical analysis was conducted using two-way ANOVA followed by separate one-way ANOVAs. The Games–Howell post-hoc test was applied for pairwise comparisons. Results: All specimens survived storage with thermal cycling. The mean TBS values ranged from a minimum of 43.4 ± 5.0 MPa to a maximum of 66.4 ± 3.5 after 3 days and from a minimum of 13.6 ± 2.5 MPa to a maximum of 50.1 ± 9.4 MPa after 150 days. Conclusions: Artificial aging had a significantly negative effect on all test groups. The chosen adhesive-resin system had a significant effect on the resulting TBS values. The highest TBS values were achieved for the self-adhesive luting resin G-Cem One but were statistically comparable to the results obtained for the dual-cure luting resin G-Cem LinkForce.

Effect of air abrasion particles on the bond strength of adhesive resin cement to zirconia core

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the effect of air abrasion with different particles of different sizes and forms on the shear bond strength of adhesive resin cement to zirconia core. Material and methods: Sixty zirconia core disks were produced and sintered. The specimens were divided into six equal groups for application of air abrasion procedures. The surfaces of the specimens were treated with one of five air abrasion particles: 30 μm silica-coated aluminum oxide particles; 1-3 μm synthetic diamond particles; 110 μm aluminum oxide particles; 30-50 μm synthetic diamond particles; and 60-80 μm cubic boron nitride particles. The remaining 10 specimens were untreated and served as controls. Composite resin disks were cemented to each of the zirconia core specimens. All specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 h and thermocycled for 6000 cycles. The shear bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. Data were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA with Tamhane tests (α = 0.05). The effect of the air abrasion procedures was examined using scanning electron microscopy. Results: Air abrasion with different materials affected the bond strength (P < 0.001). The highest bond strengths were obtained by air abrasion with 30-50 μm synthetic diamond particles; the lowest bond strengths were obtained in the control group (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Air abrasion with 30-50 μm synthetic diamond particles, 60-80 μm cubic boron nitride particles and 110 μm aluminum oxide particles showed higher bond strength values than other methods.
Material properties and finite element analysis of adhesive cements used for zirconia crowns on dental implants

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the material properties of four dental cements, analyze the stress distribution on the cement layer under various loading conditions, and perform failure analysis on the fractured specimens retrieved from mechanical tests. Microhardness indentation testing is used to measure material hardness microscopically with a diamond indenter. The hardness and elastic moduli of three self-adhesive resin cements (SARC), namely, DEN CEM (DENTEX, Changchun, China), Denali (Glidewell Laboratories, CA, USA), and Glidewell Experimental SARC (GES-Glidewell Laboratories, CA, USA), and a resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI-Glidewell Laboratories, CA, USA) cement, were measured using microhardness indentation. These values were used in the subsequent Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to analyze the von Mises stress distribution on the cement layer of a 3D implant model constructed in SOLIDWORKS under different mechanical forces. Failure analysis was performed on the fractured specimens retrieved from prior mechanical tests. All the cements, except Denali, had elastic moduli comparable to dentin (8-15 GPa). RMGI with primer and GES cements exhibited the lowest von Mises stresses under tensile and compressive loads. Stress distribution under tensile and compressive loads correlated well with experimental tests, unlike oblique loads. Failure analysis revealed that damages on the abutment and screw vary significantly with loading direction. GES and RMGI cement with primer (Glidewell Laboratories, CA, USA) may be suitable options for cement-retained zirconia crowns on titanium abutments. Adding fillets to the screw thread crests can potentially reduce the extent of the damage under load.

Abstract:We study the application of the augmented Lagrangian method to the solution of linear ill-posed problems. Previously, linear convergence rates with respect to the Bregman distance have been derived under the classical assumption of a standard source condition. Using the method of variational inequalities, we extend these results in this paper to convergence rates of lower order, both for the case of an a priori parameter choice and an a posteriori choice based on Morozov’s discrepancy principle. In addition, our approach allows the derivation of convergence rates with respect to distance measures different from the Bregman distance. As a particular application, we consider sparsity promoting regularization, where we derive a range of convergence rates with respect to the norm under the assumption of restricted injectivity in conjunction with generalized source conditions of Hölder type.
