Abstract:Rice husk ash (RHA) is a promising low-cost adsorbent. Meanwhile, the magnetic and catalytic capabilities of ferrite nanoparticles make it efficient for water purification. In this study, we prepared RHA and rice husk/CoFe2O4 composite (RHC) and studied their methylene blue (MB) adsorption capacities in fixed-bed columns. The column regeneration was also investigated. Both RHA and RHC are amorphous materials with Brunauer, Emmet and Teller (BET) surface area of >180m(2)g(-1) and mesopore volume of >0.1cm(3)g(-1). The CoFe2O4 nanoparticles are mainly located on the inner surface of RHC, which significantly increased the mesopore volume and average pore size but decreased the BET surface area and micropore volume. The adsorption ability of RHC was investigated in a fixed-bed column, with RHA as control. The effects of column parameters including bed height, flow rate, and inlet MB concentration on breakthrough curves were studied. The mathematical models, such as bed-depth service time (BDST), Thomas, and Yoon-Nelson models were applied to predict the breakthrough curves. It was found that BDST model fitted the breakthrough curves best. Results showed that the breakthrough time of RHC is more than two times than that of RHA, which may be attributed to the catalytic performance of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles. The exhausted RHA and RHC were retreated by three methods and eluted of the column with ethanol caused the highest regeneration efficiency. In addition, fixed-bed tests of RHA and RHC on real dye wastewater demonstrated that these adsorbents have good practical value and application prospect.
Removal of caffeine from pharmaceutical wastewater by adsorption: influence of NOM, textural and chemical properties of the adsorbent

Abstract:This work involves the study of the influence of textural and chemical adsorbent properties on natural organic matter (NOM) removal and the simultaneous adsorption of caffeine and NOM in pharmaceutical wastewater. The performance of a microporous activated carbon, Calgon F400, a synthesized mesoporous carbon from peach stones and a commercial sepiolite in the removal of NOM of a WWTP effluent, and the competitive adsorption of caffeine/NOM were evaluated. It was evidenced that the microporous structure of the adsorbents significantly conditioned the removal of NOM, finding that F400 activated carbon (microporous volume of 0.46 cm(3) g(-1)) led to a NOM removal of 45%. The presence of NOM in the aqueous medium led to worse adsorption parameters, including adsorption capacity at breakthrough time, mass transfer zone length and fractional bed utilization. Additionally, an overshooting in the Total Organic Carbon concentration (TOC/TOC0 = 1.05) was observed in the sepiolite adsorption fixed-bed experiment, due to the displacement of the background NOM. The tested adsorbents were efficient in the removal of caffeine from a pharmaceutical wastewater, finding a competitive effect between the target compound and the background NOM for the active sites.

Abstract:Environmental pollution is a worldwide concern, especially when caused by sewage dumping into water bodies. Many substances are present in industrial or domestic wastewater, causing contamination in superficial water collection. Surfactants stand out for being widely used both industrially and domestically. The use of detergents and many types of surfactants was increased during the Covid-19 pandemic period, a fact observed in the levels in the effluent sample analysis from a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) - Vila City around 21 and 39 mg L-1 in this period. This work evaluated the surfactant concentrations in the primary and secondary treatment units of the Vila City STP, in the city of Paranavaí-PR.-Brazil. In addition, the use of a post-treatment by slow sand filtration and adsorption by activated carbon produced from spent coffee grounds in the complementary removal of surfactants was proposed. A mixed bed with sand and activated carbon columns was made on a pilot scale, and filtration/adsorption runs were performed simulating slow filtration with rates of approximately 15 m3 m-2 day-1. The parameters used for the efficiency removal evaluation in a pilot plant run were: turbidity (NTU) and surfactant concentrations. The removal of surfactant concentrations was about 9% and 7% in the Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Bed reactors (UASB-RALF) and in the secondary treatment, respectively, at the STP – Vila City units. In the post-treatment proposed by filtration/adsorption, bed columns on a pilot scale plant obtained a reduction of approximately 94% in terms of turbidity (NTU) and 95% in terms of surfactant removal. Characterization and Performance of Peanut Shells in Caffeine and Triclosan Removal in Batch and Fixed-Bed Column Tests

Abstract:Peanut shells' adsorption performance in caffeine and triclosan removal was studied. Peanut shells were analyzed for their chemical composition, morphology, and surface functional groups. Batch adsorption and fixed-bed column experiments were carried out with solutions containing 30 mg/L of caffeine and triclosan. The parameters examined included peanut shell particle size (120–150, 300–600, and 800–2000 μm), adsorbent dose (0.02–60 g/L), contact time (up to 180 min), bed height (4–8 cm), and hydraulic loading rate (2.0 and 4.0 m3/m2-day). After determining the optimal adsorption conditions, kinetics, isotherm, and breakthrough curve models were applied to analyze the experimental data. Peanut shells showed an irregular surface and consisted mainly of polysaccharides (around 70% lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose), with a specific surface area of 1.7 m2/g and a pore volume of 0.005 cm3/g. The highest removal efficiencies for caffeine (85.6 ± 1.4%) and triclosan (89.3 ± 1.5%) were achieved using the smallest particles and 10.0 and 0.1 g/L doses over 180 and 45 min, respectively. Triclosan showed easier removal compared to caffeine due to its higher lipophilic character. The pseudo-second-order kinetics model provided the best fit with the experimental data, suggesting a chemisorption process between caffeine/triclosan and the adsorbent. Equilibrium data were well-described by the Sips model, with maximum adsorption capacities of 3.3 mg/g and 289.3 mg/g for caffeine and triclosan, respectively. In fixed-bed column adsorption tests, particle size significantly influenced efficiency and hydraulic behavior, with 120–150 μm particles exhibiting the highest adsorption capacity for caffeine (0.72 mg/g) and triclosan (143.44 mg/g), albeit with clogging issues. The experimental data also showed good agreement with the Bohart–Adams, Thomas, and Yoon–Nelson models. Therefore, the findings of this study highlight not only the effective capability of peanut shells to remove caffeine and triclosan but also their versatility as a promising option for water treatment and sanitation applications in different contexts.

Abstract:Adsorbent is one of the most important factors for separation efficiency in fixed-bed purification techniques. The adsorption behavior of catechins and caffeine onto polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVPP) was investigated by static adsorption tests. The results showed that catechins rather than caffeine were preferred to adsorb onto PVPP since the adsorption selectivity coefficient of total catechins vs caffeine was around 22.5, and that adsorption of catechins could be described by the pseudo-second-order model. Adsorption amount of caffeine onto PVPP in green tea extracts solution was much higher than that in purified caffeine solution although the initial concentration of caffeine was similar in the two solutions, indicating the caffeine might be attached with catechins which were adsorbed by PVPP instead of being adsorbed by PVPP directly. The results also showed that the adsorption capacity of catechins and caffeine decreased with an increase in temperature, and that Freundlich and Langmuir models were both suitable for describing the isothermal adsorption of catechins, but not suitable for caffeine. The predicted maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of total catechins by PVPP was 671.77 mg g(-1) at 20 °C, which was significantly higher than that by other reported adsorbents. The thermodynamics analyses indicated that the adsorption of catechins onto PVPP was a spontaneous and exothermic physisorption process, revealing lower temperature was favorable for the adsorption of catechins. Elution tests showed that the desorption rates of catechins and caffeine were higher than 91% and 99% after two elution stages; in detail, almost all of the caffeine could be washed down at the water eluting stage, while catechins could be recovered at the dimethyl sulfoxide/ethanol solution eluting stage. Thus, the PVPP could be used as an excellent alternative adsorbent candidate for separating catechins from crude tea extracts, although some investigations, such as exploring the new eluants with low boiling point and high desorption efficiency, should be conducted furthermore.

Abstract:The biopurification systems (BPS) or biobeds are employed for the treatment of pesticide-containing wastewater of agricultural origin. The use of these devices for pesticide removal requires the proper optimization of the composition of biomixtures (BPS active matrix) according to the target pesticides applied on a specific crop and the available materials used in their elaboration. This work aims to design a biomixture for the simultaneous treatment of several pesticides applied in coffee crops, according to local practices in Costa Rica. Three biomixtures containing either coffee husk, coconut fiber or rice husk (as the lignocellulosic substrate) were applied for the removal of 12 pesticides. The profiles of pesticide elimination and the mineralization of radiolabeled chlorpyrifos ( 14 C-chlorpyrifos) revealed that the best performance was achieved with the coconut fiber biomixture, even though similar detoxification patterns were determined in every biomixture (according to immobilization in Daphnia magna and germination tests in Lactuca sativa ). The optimization of this biomixture’s composition by means of a central composite design permitted the definition of two optimal compositions (compost:soil:coconut fiber, % v/v) that maximized pesticide removal: i. 29:7.3:63.7 and ii. 11:7.3:81.7. The validation of these optimized compositions also included the use of an alternative soil from another coffee farm and resulted in overall DT 50 values of 7.8–9.0 d for the pesticide mixture. Considering the removal kinetics in the optimized biomixture, a 1 m 3 BPS prototype was dimensioned to be eventually used in local coffee farms. This work provides relevant information for the design and implementation of BPS at on-farm conditions for the treatment of pesticide-containing wastewater of a major crop.

Abstract:Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have been increasingly used all over the world and they have been reported on water cycle and cause contamination. Among these pharmaceuticals is caffeine (CAF). In this work, CAF removal from aqueous samples by metal-organic framework (UIO-66) and perovskite (La0.7Sr0.3FeO3) was achieved. Detailed studies on the preparation of MOFs and perovskite oxides compounds have been presented. Extensive characterizations such as X-Ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms were also carried out to assure proper formation and to better understand the physico-chemical behavior of the synthesized samples before and after adsorption. Batch experiments of CAF adsorption onto both MOFs and perovskite were performed to compare the effectiveness of both materials on the removal competence of the CAF residue at different conditions including the effect of pH, initial concentration, and contact time. It was observed that the adsorption capacity of CAF by MOF increased with increasing acidity. On the other hand, the adsorption capacity of perovskite is stable in pH 4-10. The maximum adsorption capacities of UiO-66 and perovskite toward CAF are high as 62.5 mg g-1 and 35.25 mg g-1, respectively. Equilibrium isotherms were investigated by numerous models: Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Redlich-Peterson, Sips, Langmuir-Freundlich, Toth, Kahn, Baudu, and Fritz Schlunder. Moreover, the kinetics of the CAF@MOF and CAF@Perovskite systems have been studied by five kinetic models (Pseudo-1st -order (PFO), Pseudo-2nd -order (PSO), Mixed 1st, 2nd-order, Intraparticle diffusion and Avrami). The best model described the adsorption of CAF onto both of MOF and perovskite was the mixed 1st, 2nd-order model. The metal-organic framework and perovskite were applied to quickly extract CAF from water samples successfully. The maximum removal percentage obtained for MOF and perovskite was 0.89% and 0.94% respectively within 30 min contact time which suggests that these materials are considered as promising adsorbents for CAF.

Abstract:The serious toxicological effects of heavy metal ions in aquatic ecosystems have motivated the search for alternatives to reduce contamination of water sources from industrial wastewater. In this work, continuous adsorption of nickel, cadmium, and lead was assessed using a packed bed column filled with Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) pod husks widely available in the northern region of Colombia. The physicochemical characterization of the agricultural biomass was performed to quantify its chemical composition by bromatological, FT-IR, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The breakthrough curves were constructed for all heavy metal ions with bed depth of 4 and 7.5 cm, taking aliquots at 10, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210, 240, and 270 min. Moreover, experimental data were fitted to adsorption models in continuous mode to predict adsorptive performance (Adams–Bohart, Thomas, and Yoon–Nelson). For the FT-IR analysis of biomass before and after adsorption, the most representative bands occur around 3200–3900 cm−1 attributed to the presence of hydroxyl groups, showing the destruction of the peaks of lignocellulosic materials. The breakthrough curves revealed that for a 7.5 cm bed, adsorption performance reported the following order of promising results: Pb2+ > Ni2+ > Cd2+; while for a 4 cm bed, Pb2+ > Ni2+. The mechanism of adsorption of the evaluated metals onto cocoa pod husk was attributed to cationic exchange and microprecipitation due to the presence of Ca, K, and Si in the structure of the bio-adsorbent. Finally, the continuous adsorption was modeled under the mathematical expressions of Adams–Bohart, Thomas, and Yoon–Nelson reporting good fitting with correlation coefficient above 0.95.

Abstract:In the present work, the composite MgAl-LDH/biochar using activated carbon from bovine bone as support for the layered double hydroxide particles was successfully synthesised and used as an alternative adsorbent for caffeine removal from water. Kinetic studies showed that the equilibrium was achieved in only 20 min of contact between the adsorbent and the adsorbate. The pseudo-first-order model represented the experimental data more satisfactorily (R2 = 0.95), suggesting a physical adsorption process. The isotherms were performed at three temperatures, in which it was observed the decrease in the adsorption in higher temperatures. It was obtained a maximum adsorption capacity of 26.219 mg/g at 40 °C, and the experimental data were better adjusted by Redlich–Peterson, R2 > 0.9942. In short, the study demonstrated that the composite was satisfactorily synthesised and its use in the caffeine removal was quite attractive, being a potential adsorbent for water treatment applications.

Abstract:Agro-industrial residue valorization under the umbrella of the circular bioeconomy (CBE) has prompted the search for further forward-thinking alternatives that encourage the mitigation of the industry's environmental footprint. From this perspective, second-life valorization (viz., thermoplastic composites) has been explored for agro-industrial waste (viz., oil palm empty fruit bunch fibers, OPEFBFs) that has already been used previously in other circular applications (viz., the removal of domestic wastewater contaminants). Particularly, this ongoing study evaluated the performance of raw residues (R-OPEFBFs) within three different size ranges (250–425, 425–600, 600–800 μm) both before and after their utilization in biofiltration processes (as post-adsorbents, P-OPEFBFs) to reinforce a polymer matrix of acrylic resin. The research examined the changes in R-OPEFBF composition and morphology caused by microorganisms in the biofilters and their impact on the mechanical properties of the composites. Smaller R-OPEFBFs (250–425 μm) demonstrated superior mechanical performance. Additionally, the composites with P-OPEFBFs displayed significant enhancements in their mechanical properties (3.9–40.3%) compared to those with R-OPEFBFs. The combination of the three fiber sizes improved the mechanical behavior of the composites, indicating the potential for both R-OPEFBFs and P-OPEFBFs as reinforcement materials in composite applications.

Abstract:Environmental contamination from various industrial sources poses a significant global concern, demanding effective remediation strategies. This study investigates the efficacy of spent coffee grounds-derived carbon material in removing various contaminants, including organophosphate pesticides, pharmaceutical residues, and cationic dyes from aqueous solutions. Adsorption experiments were conducted at different temperatures (25 °C, 30 °C, and 35 °C), and the adsorption behavior was analyzed using various kinetic (pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, intraparticle diffusion) and isotherm models (Freundlich, Langmuir, Temkin, Dubinin-Radushkevich). Our findings reveal a complex adsorption process involving both monolayer and multilayer adsorption on the heterogeneous surface of the material. Temperature significantly influenced adsorption behavior, affecting maximum capacities and interactions. Using a material concentration of 0.5 mg mL −1 increases adsorption capacities for both pesticides, reaching 92.0 mg g −1 for malathion and 259 mg g −1 for chlorpyrifos adsorption. At a material concentration of 0.1 mg mL −1 , the carbon material exhibited high adsorption capacities for methylene blue, rhodamine B, amoxicillin, and ceftriaxone, reaching values of 2085 mg g −1 , 8250 mg g −1 , 82 mg g −1 , and 181 mg g −1 , respectively. The adsorbent was successfully regenerated using 25 % ethanol solution and reused for at least 10 cycles without significantly impacting the adsorption capacity. These results underscore the potential of spent coffee grounds-derived carbon material as an efficient adsorbent for diverse contaminants, highlighting its promising role in environmental remediation efforts.

Abstract:Natural lignocellulose fibers have been extensively investigated and applied as a reinforcement of polymer composites in industrial applications from food packing to automotive parts. Among the advantages of natural fibers stands their relatively low cost and sustainable characteristics. These are accentuated in the case of residual fibers such as those obtained from coffee husks, an agribusiness waste, usually burnt or disposed into the environment. As composite reinforcement, hydrophilic natural fibers display adhesion problems to the most hydrophobic polymer matrices. This adhesion might be improved with distinct types of fibers surface treatments. In the present work, the effectiveness of three surface treatments applied to coffee husk fiber wastes (CHFW) were investigated, aiming to improve the tensile performance of castor oil-based polyurethane (COPU) biocomposites. The effects of treatments associated with (i) chemical with sodium hydroxide, (ii) physical by temperature and pressure and hydrothermic treatment, and (iii) biological by fermentation with Phanerochaete Chrysosporium fungus were evaluated by means of Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermal analyses and morphology by scanning electron microscopy for different concentration of NaOH, different hydrothermic times at 121 °C/98 kPa and exposition to P. chrysosporium. The most effective treatment was the hydrothermal one at 121 °C and 98.06 kPa for 30 min. Preliminary tensile tests were performed in COPU biocomposites reinforced with 20% CHFWs subjected to the optimized conditions for each distinct type of treatment. The results indicated that the hydrothermal treatment promoted significant enhancement in the fiber/matrix interfacial bond, increasing the tensile strength up to 60% compared to COPU reinforced with in natura CHFWs fibers. It is important to mention that these composites can be applied as plastic wood for household items’ internal parts and in the automobile industry.

Abstract:The rise of pharmaceutical residues poses a serious threat to ecological and aquatic environments, necessitating the development of cost-effective, convenient, and recyclable adsorbents. Given the high global consumption of eggs, a significant amount of waste eggshell is produced. The techniques outlined here aim to manage eggshell waste by transforming it into highly valuable products, addressing the issue of eggshell waste in communities and industries. This approach supports the concept of zero-waste operations to create value-added goods, contributing to sustainable development. In the future, this method of waste management and material recycling may be adopted as an alternative. CaO-based ZnFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH) is identified as an efficient adsorbent for caffeine (COF) residues due to its biodegradability and biocompatibility. We extensively analyzed the synthesized CaO, ZnFe-LDH, and CaO/ZnFe-LDH composites before the adsorption processes using FT-IR, XRD, SEM, EDX, BET surface area, PZC, TGA/DTG, and after the adsorption processes using FT-IR. We investigated factors affecting the adsorption process, such as pH, adsorbent dose, COF concentrations, and time. Six non-linear adsorption isotherm models were studied at pH 7 for the composite and pH 9 for LDH, showing maximum adsorption capacities (q max) of 152.35 mg g-1 for LDH and 194.87 mg g-1 for CaO/ZnFe-LDH. Kinetic studies were also conducted. Interestingly, the MTT assay conducted on WI-38 cells revealed minimal toxicity, with most tests indicating cell viability above 60%. The synthesized CaO, ZnFe-LDH, and CaO/ZnFe-LDH composite exhibit robust antimicrobial properties against two pathogens, including Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive bacteria (MRSA). The MIC values for the synthesized materials range from 0.87 to 7 µg mL-1, varying with the microbial species. Two green metrics were applied: the analytical Eco-scale and the Analytical GREEnness Calculator (AGREE).
Development of Elaeis guineensis/polyvinyl alcohol/carbon nanotube composites for efficient adsorption of dye: Experimental and theoretical approach

Abstract:Industrial sectors are main responsible for continually releasing of harmful compounds in the form of wastewater. The potential utilization of bio-waste materials has received great attention to minimize the serious environmental issues. Therefore, the present research is focused to develop an Elaeis guineensis/polyvinyl alcohol/carbon nanotube (EG/PVA/CNT) composite via a simple polymerization method and tested to remove the dye from aqueous solutions. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) characterizations were selected to confirm the morphology and chemical structures of composites. The water content measurement and swelling characteristics of EG/PVA/CNT were also elaborated. The evaluation of composites was explored through the elimination of methylene blue (MB) in a batch adsorption scheme including EG loading, pH of MB aqueous solutions, contact time, initial concentration of MB solutions, adsorbent dose and solution temperature. The results revealed that EG-based adsorbents have superior adsorption efficiency of 92.44%. The adsorption kinetics was well explained by pseudo-second-order model, while in adsorption isotherms, Langmuir model was appropriate to demonstrate the MB adsorption data giving superlative removal aptitudes. The thermodynamic results revealed that adsorption onto EG/PVA/CNT was favorable, spontaneous and exothermic in nature, while activation energy informed the physical type of adsorption process. The adsorption mechanism of MB onto EG/PVA/CNT was also proposed. Moreover, EG/PVA/CNT was in stable form with good adsorption capacity and could easily be recycled. Based upon the present research, a strong strategy between EG, CNT and PVA could successfully develop an economical adsorbent for the treatment of different effluents.

Abstract:The coffee industry produces a wide range of organic wastes, some in large amounts, and most of them do not have a well-defined final disposal. The agricultural use of these wastes can be based on the recycling of nitrogen, but their chemical characterization and evaluation with soil under controlled conditions are mandatory. The aim of this work was to evaluate the use of coffee silverskin and expired coffee grounds as organic fertilizers. The wastes were chemically characterized according to CONAMA’S resolution No. 375 and passed through Brazil’s Agriculture Ministry regulation for organic fertilizers and soil conditioners. A greenhouse experiment with Rhodic Ferralsol soil and maize was performed to obtain the agronomic efficiency index (AEI) for nitrogen. The treatments were control (without residue), ammonium nitrate as a mineral reference, and both organic wastes, at a dose of 450 mg of Kjeldahl nitrogen per pot, in triplicate. The data obtained in the characterization were favorable to the wastes as nitrogen sources for agriculture. However, the AEIs obtained were low (0.5 and 7.9% for the expired coffee grounds and the coffee silverskin, respectively) compared to that of the mineral reference (92%). Based on these results, the use of coffee silverskin and expired grounds as organic fertilizers is not recommended but can improve soil attributes and serve as a complementary source of nitrogen and potash.
The challenging removal of emerging pollutants: electrochemical regeneration to recover the adsorption capacity of a caffeine-saturated activated carbon

Abstract:The treatment of emerging pollutants is challenging due to the very low concentration in which they are found in nature, along with their general recalcitrant characteristic. One way to overcome these limitations is combining a pre-concentration step followed by the degradation of the concentrated pollutant. This can be achieved in a first adsorption step, followed by a second electrochemical carbon regeneration/pollutant degradation. This study applies this principle to caffeine treatment by coupling adsorption on activated carbon (AC) with electrochemical regeneration/caffeine degradation onto a boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode. The AC is morphologically and structurally characterized by N2 adsorption/desorption experiment (surface area) and scanning electron microscopy (surface morphology). The isoelectric point of the AC is measured to identify the surface charge depending on the pH, and the equilibrium isotherms allow us to estimate the caffeine adsorption capacity. The concept of adsorption/electrochemical regeneration is applied to caffeine treatment, analyzing the influence of operating parameters such as the fluidization of the carbon, the electrolyte, and the applied current. Under AC fluidization, using NaCl as the electrolyte and a current density of 0.5 A, a regeneration efficiency of 87% can be achieved. Furthermore, after 5 adsorption/regeneration cycles, this parameter slightly drops to 80%, demonstrating its capacity to preserve the carbon capacity and effectiveness in recovering the AC. Finally, the intermediates formed during the electrochemical regeneration are also identified.

Abstract:Lignocellulosic wastes have garnered interest in activated carbon (AC) production owing to their abundance and cost-effectiveness. This research utilized coffee husk as a precursor for AC. The methodology involves impregnating the waste with varying proportions of phosphoric acid (H 3 PO 4 ), 1:1 and 1:3 (mass waste :mass H 3 PO4 ), and activation in a microwave oven, with different power and activation times. The N 2 adsorption/desorption results demonstrated high surface areas (S BET ) for the ACs. The optimized AC (C 1:3-1000-10 ) was obtained using a time of 10 min, high impregnation ratio, and power, resulting in an S BET of 1200 m 2 g −1 . Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra confirmed the presence of functional groups, such as hydroxyl and ester, on the AC surface. Adsorption tests with sulfamethazine (SMZ) showed a 225 mg g −1 remotion capacity, highlighting the waste potential for sustainable and economical AC production. This underscores the importance of optimizing activation parameters to enhance performance and application versatility in AC production from lignocellulosic sources.

Waste and Biomass Valorization

Abstract:Brazil is the largest producer and exporter of Arabica coffee in the world. The increase in the residue generated after the processing of the grain is proportional to the increase in coffee production. The ratio between obtaining the processed bean and the coffee husk is generally around 1:1 (m/m), and a high volume of waste is generated during the processing. The present work aims to propose a technology for the use of this residue, carrying out crystallization of the caffeine extracted from the coffee husk of the Coffea arabica , Red Catuaí type. To achieve the proposed objective, a central composite design was carried out for the roasting step to optimize the extraction of caffeine. The optimum temperature and time obtained within the analyzed range of these variables were 147.6 °C and 5.3 min, respectively, and indicated the maximum extraction of caffeine content of 43.08% in mass. The crystallization of caffeine from coffee husk was carried out in a supersaturated solution with seeds obtained by previous crystallization of caffeine. The experiments indicated crystalline growth of the added seeds, even in the presence of impurities and possible crystallization inhibitors. In this way, crystallization was decisive in the purification of the caffeine extracted from the coffee husks, reaching a purity of 88% for caffeine.
