Abstract:Constructing an advanced catalytic system for the purposeful liquefaction of lignin into chemicals has presented a significant prospect for sustainable development. In this work, the catalytic process of mesoporous homologous biochar (HBC) derived from alkali lignin supported copper catalysts (Cu/HBC) was reported for catalytic liquefaction of alkali lignin to monophenols. The characterization results revealed HBC promoted the formation of metal-support strong interaction and the generation of oxygen vacancies, enhancing the acid sites of Cu/HBC. Under the optimal conditions (0.2 g alkali lignin, 280 °C, 0.05 g Cu/HBC, 6 h, 18 mL water), the monophenol yield reached 75.01 ± 0.76 mg/g, and the bio-oil yield was 57.98 ± 1.76%. The copious mesopores, high surface area, and rich acidic sites were responsible for the high activity of Cu/HBC, which significantly outperformed the controlled catalysts, such as HBC, commercial activated carbon (AC), and reported Ni/AC, Ni/MCM-41, etc. In four consecutive runs, the catalytic performance of Cu/HBC was only reduced by 3.65% per cycle. Interestingly, catechol was selectively produced with Cu/HBC, which provided an effective strategy for the conversion of G/S-type lignin to catechyl phenolics (C-type). These findings indicate that the Cu/HBC will be a promising substitution of noble metal-supported catalysts for conversion biomass into high value-added phenolics.

Abstract:Developing efficient process and technologies for the conversion of lignin into valuable functional chemicals is an important aspect of the biorefinery concept. In this study, the effect of low-cost base catalyst (NaOH, KOH, K2CO3 and Na2CO3) and acid catalyst formic acid (FA) was examined for the effective depolymerization of lignin into monomers of phenolic compounds at low temperatures (140, 160 and 180 °C). Also, different reaction residence time (30, 60 and 120 min.), catalyst amounts have been varied to optimize the liquefaction reaction conditions. In the case of non-catalytic experiments, maximum bio-oil yield (14.2 wt.%) was obtained at 160 °C for 30 min. reaction time. With K2CO3 catalysts, maximum bio-oil yield of 26.0 wt.% was observed, whereas in case of formic acid (FA) catalyst lignin depolymerization is very effective as it produced maximum bio-oil yield of 78.0 wt.%. Bio-oils were characterized using GC–MS, FT-IR, NMR analytical methods. Bio-oil analysis showed that it contained higher amount of phenolic monomers after lignin depolymerization. Higher amount of vanillin (41.9%) and isovanillin (44.9%) was found without catalyst and with FA liquefaction reaction. However with base catalyst, dibutyl phthalate (28.8%) was observed as the major compound in lignin depolymerization derived bio-oil. Solid residue analysis shows that base and acid catalyst depolymerized lignin in different ways by breaking of C-O and C–C bonds.

Comprehensive characterization of hydrothermal liquefaction products obtained from woody biomass under various alkali catalyst concentrations

Abstract:Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of lignocellulosic biomass has been widely investigated for the production of renewable and alternative bio-crude oil. In this study, catalytic hydrothermal processing of two biomasses (larch and Mongolian oak) was performed using different K2CO3 concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 wt% of solvent) to improve fuel yield and properties. HTL oil, hydrochar, water-soluble fraction (WSF) and gas were characterized, and carbon balance was investigated. As a result, the maximum yield of HTL oil, 27.7 wt% (Mongolian oak) and 25.7 wt% (larch), and the highest carbon conversion ratio was obtained with 0.5 wt% of catalyst. The high catalyst concentration also resulted in an increase in higher heating values up to 31.9 MJ/kg. In addition, the amount of organic compounds in HTL oil also increased, specifically for lignin-derived compounds including catechol and hydroquinone which can be derived from secondary hydrolysis of lignin. On the other hand, formation of hydrochar was suppressed with the addition of alkali catalyst and the yield dramatically decreased from 30.7-40.8 wt.% to 20.0-21.8 wt.%. Furthermore, it was revealed that WSF had low organic carbon content less than 3.4% and high potassium content mostly derived from alkali catalyst, indicating that it may be reusable with simple purification. This work suggests that the addition of the proper amount of alkali catalyst can improve the production efficiency and quality of bio-crude oil, and another potential of WSF to be recyclable in further work.
Highly efficient catalytic hydrogenolysis of lignin model compounds over hydrotalcite-derived Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalysts

Abstract:Catalytic hydrogenolysis of CO bonds in lignin provides a promising route to produce high value-added biofuels and chemicals. However, designing highly active and stable catalysts for this process is still a challenge. Herein, a series of Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalysts were synthesized by calcination and reduction of layered double hydroxide precursors, and their activities were evaluated in the catalytic conversion of lignin-derived compounds. Diphenyl ether was completely converted with a 100% monomeric selectivity (cyclohexane and cyclohexanol) over the optimized Ni/Al 2 O 3 -500 under the optimal conditions of 200 °C, 0.5 MPa H 2 and 1.5 h, indicating the excellent catalytic activity in the cleavage of CO bonds of the catalyst. The excellent catalytic performances of Ni/Al 2 O 3 -500 were originated from its relatively large specific surface area, well-developed porosity, small crystallite size, high Ni 0 concentration and strong interaction between the active metal and support. The reusability experiments show that Ni/Al 2 O 3 -500 possesses a relatively high stability for six reuses. Moreover, various lignin model compounds can be completely converted to corresponding monomeric products over Ni/Al 2 O 3 -500, indicating the applicability of this ingenious catalyst. The application of the hydrotalcite-derived Ni-based catalysts with high activity and stability provides a promising approach for the efficient hydrogenolysis of lignin derivatives.

Abstract:Here, the zeolite catalysts HY and ZSM-5 were used for liquefaction of lignin in supercritical ethanol (Sc-EtOH) to improve the bio-oil yield and control the product distribution. The effects of the reaction temperature (260–380 °C), reaction time (30–120 min), and catalyst content (5.00–15.00 wt %) were investigated. In Sc-EtOH, lignin treated with 10.00 wt % HY catalyst at 360 °C for 60 min resulted in a bio-oil yield of 59.13 wt % and a total hydrocarbon content of 31.26%. Under the same conditions with 10.00 wt % ZSM-5 catalyst, the bio-oil yield was 51.77 wt % and the total hydrocarbon content was 10.34%. This showed that there were large differences in the bio-oil yield and distribution of hydrocarbons (alkanes, olefins, and aromatic hydrocarbons) using the two catalysts. A large amount of alkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons was produced from lignin in the presence of the HY and ZSM-5 zeolite catalysts, respectively. This revealed that the primary reaction over HY was isomerization, whereas that over ZSM-5 was cleavage.

Abstract:Various Ni supported on active carbon (Ni/AC) catalysts were acquired by reduced at different temperatures, among which Ni/AC-500 possesses the smallest particle sizes of metallic Ni species, favoring to more active sites exposed on the catalyst surface, and the suitable content of metallic Ni 0 , implying the high hydrogenolysis activity obtained. Additionally, the highest mesoporous volume of Ni/AC-500 promotes the diffusion of large molecules from lignin depolymerization. Therefore, Ni/AC-500 exhibits the higher lignin conversion and yields of liquid bio-oil and monomers, but the lower yield of bio-char in lignin hydrodepolymerization due to its higher hydrogenolysis activity compared with other catalysts.

Abstract:NiMo-doped catalysts were investigated for the conversion of lignin to drop-in fuel through catalytic hydro pyrolysis. The influence of NiMo-doped catalysts with different carriers and Ni/Mo molar ratios on the hydro pyrolysis product distribution were studied using both lignin and lignin model compounds. Two coefficients were proposed to qualitatively evaluate the catalytic performance of NiMo-doped catalysts. Low yield of methane (13.04c%) and high yield of condensable hydrocarbons products (25.82c%) with low selectivity of polyaromatics (4.37%) were obtained at 1.0 MPa H-2 and 400 degrees C catalytic temperature during lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis over Ni1Mo/ZrO2. The hydrodeoxygenation activity of NixMo/ZrO2 depends on Ni-0, Mo4+, and Mo3+. The synergistic effect of Ni and Mo promotes the removal of the phenolic methoxy group. The increase in hydrogen pressure tends to make hydrogen to be consumed through hydrocracking and hydrogenation reactions. The influence of Ni1Mo/ZrO2 on evolution of lignin hydropyrolysis volatiles was revealed. Ni shows strong activity in the removal of phenolic hydroxyl groups and benzene ring hydrogenation, while Mo tends to remove phenolic methoxy groups.
Efficient depolymerization of alkali lignin to monophenols using one-step synthesized Cu–Ni bimetallic catalysts inlaid in homologous biochar

Abstract:The efficient depolymerization of lignin for the production of high-value chemicals is essential for the development of a sustainable and competitive biorefinery. In this study, we report the preparation of homologous biochar-supported inlaid Cu–Ni catalysts (Cu x Ni y /BC) using a one-step method, and their application for lignin depolymerization in mild water without the need for external hydrogen, additives, or co-catalysts. The Cu 1 Ni 3 /BC (0.05 g catalyst, 8 h, 280 °C, and 18 mL water) showed exceptional catalytic activity, with a monophenol yield of 94.35 ± 2.92 mg/g, bio-oil yield of 68.98 ± 1.42%, and a lignin conversion rate of 92.36 ± 1.99%, which outperformed both the biochar support and monometallic catalysts. The outstanding catalytic performance of Cu 1 Ni 3 /BC was attributed to its strong metal-support interaction, alloy sites, and well-dispersed nanoparticles. Reusability experiments demonstrated that the Cu 1 Ni 3 /BC exhibited relatively good stability for up to four reuses, with only a 2.32% reduction in catalytic activity per cycle. Mechanism investigation revealed that the Cu 1 Ni 3 /BC, with its abundant mesoporous structure and enhanced acid sites, displayed excellent deoxygenation ability, enabling effective cleavage of C–O/C–C bonds and the production of G-type phenols. This approach provides new insights into the large-scale utilization of lignin for the production of high-value chemicals.

Efficient and controllable alcoholysis of Kraft lignin catalyzed by porous zeolite-supported nickel-copper catalyst

Abstract:The alcoholysis of Kraft lignin was catalyzed by bimetallic Ni-Cu supported on H-Beta, HZSM-5, MAS-7, MCM-41 and SAPO-11 zeolite materials in isopropanol solvent. Results showed that a higher bio-oil yield of 98.80 wt% and monomer yield of 50.83 wt% without obvious char were achieved at 330 °C for 3 h over Ni-Cu/H-Beta catalyst. Isopropanol was found to be more effective in H2 generation and facilitated to the hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenolic compounds. Moreover, the composition of liquid products was also influenced by the acidity and pore structure of catalyst. The superior cycloalkanes yield was produced over Ni-Cu/H-Beta with larger pore size and more acidity. In contrast, a large number of cyclic ketones/alcohols and alkanes were obtained over other zeolites supported catalysts with smaller pore size and less acid content. Besides, the temperature, time and solvent effect on the lignin depolymerization were also researched.

Abstract:Although the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into bio-oil with high yield/quality through hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is promising, it still faces many challenges. In this study, a Fex-Co(1-x)/Al2O3 catalyst was prepared with the coprecipitation method and low-content ethanol was used as the cosolvent for the HTL of poplar. The results showed that the Fex-Co(1-x)/Al2O3 catalyst significantly promoted the yield and energy recovery rate (ERR) of bio-oil compared with the control (10% ethanol content). At 260 °C for 30 min, 60Fe-40Co/Al2O3 had the best catalytic effect, achieving the highest bio-oil yield (67.35%) and ERR (93.07%). As a multifunctional bimetallic catalyst, Fex-Co(1-x)/Al2O3 could not only increase the degree of hydrogenation deoxidization of the product but also promote the diversity of phenolic compounds gained from lignin. The bio-oil obtained from HTL with Fex-Co(1-x)/Al2O3 as catalyst contained lower heterocyclic nitrogen, promoting the transfer of more bio-oil components to substances with lower boiling point.

Abstract:Lignin is an abundant source of aromatics with low effective hydrogen-to-carbon ratio (H/Ceff), and the depolymerization of lignin provides significant potential for producing liquid products with an improved H/Ceff value. In this work, the catalytic conversion of lignin monomers, dimer, trimers, and realistic lignin over spherical MOF-derived catalysts was well established, to get liquid fuels with a higher H/Ceff. The optimal ratio of the catalyst exhibited good hydrodeoxygenation activity and stability for the hydrotreatment of lignin model compounds and lignin. The addition of Mo facilitated the decrease of the particle size of a spherical structure, strengthened the electron-transfer capability between metals Mo and Ni, and enhanced the acid strength. All of these factors contributed to higher hydrodeoxygenation activity in the hydrotreatment process. Up to 100% conversion and 90% yields of ethylcyclohexane and cyclohexanol with H/Ceff values of 2.0 and 1.667, respectively, were obtained. The catalyst achieved a decrease of the oxygen element and an increase of H/Ceff and HHV values. The physicochemical characterizations were performed by various means including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), H2-temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), NH3-temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD), pyridine-infrared spectroscopy (Py-IR), inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometer (ICP), and Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses, which definitely elucidated the formation of a synergistic effect between metals Mo and Ni. Additionally, a control experiment also illustrated the synergistic effect that facilitated the occurrence of the hydrotreatment process under lower temperatures after the addition of metal Mo. Abstract:This paper describes catalytic consequence of hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of Dunaliella tertiolecta (D. tertiolecta) over carbon nanotubes (CNTs) supported metals catalysts to produce bio-oil. When Co/CNTs is used as catalysts, the conversion and bio-oil yield increase to 95.78 and 40.25wt.%, respectively. Chemical analysis results showed that the introduction of catalyst significantly affected the chemical composition of bio-oil with a higher percentage of hydrocarbons and a lower content of fatty acid. The introduction of metal into CNTs had no change in the basic CNT skeleton and the loaded metal nanoparticles encapsulated within the CNT enhances the disorder and defects in CNTs. Based on our results and the literature, the plausible general reaction and catalytic HTL pathways of D. tertiolecta are proposed.

Abstract:<p>The efficient depolymerization and hydrodeoxygenation of enzymatic hydrolysis lignin are achieved in cyclohexane solvents over a gamma-alumina supported nickel molybdenum alloy catalyst in a single step. Under initial 3 MPa hydrogen at 320 °C, the highest overall cycloalkane yield of 104.4 mg/g enzymatic hydrolysis lignin with 44.4 wt% selectivity of ethyl-cyclohexane was obtained. The reaction atmosphere and temperature have significant effects on enzymatic hydrolysis lignin conversion, product type and distribution. The conversion of enzymatic hydrolysis lignin was also investigated over different nickel and molybdenum-based catalysts, and the gamma-alumina supported nickel molybdenum alloy catalyst exhibited the highest activity among those catalysts. To reveal the reaction pathways of alkylphenol hydrodeoxygenation, 4-ethylphenol was tested as a model compound. Complete conversion of 4-ethylphenol into cycloalkanes was achieved. A two-step mechanism of 4-ethylphenol dihydroxylation - hydrogenation is proposed, in which the benzene ring saturation is deemed as the rate-determining step.</p>

Abstract:The catalytic properties of metals and metal oxides are vital for lignin depolymerisation into phenolic and cyclohexane compounds production. This study investigated the lignin depolymerisation of with different Ni content LaCoO 3 perovskite catalysts at different reaction conditions such as reaction temperature, time, catalysts amount. Furthermore, various hydrogen sources, including formic acid, ethanol, and pure hydrogen were tested. The highest bio-oil yield (75.3 wt.%) was achieved with hydrogen under ethanol solvent, but selectivity for cyclohexane and phenolic monomers compound was low. Using formic acid (FA) with 7% Ni-LaCoO 3 catalysts at 280°C, a bio-oil yield of 72.4 wt.% was obtained, with higher selectivity for 2,6-dimethoxyphenol (19.5%), cyclohexane (18.5%), and methylcyclohexane (14.2%). This suggests that Ni with presence of FA facilitates the cleavage of lignin's β-O (C-O) and β-β (C-C) bonds efficiently. The reaction using FA, resulted in the lowest O/C ratio (0.06), highest H/C ratio (0.14), and the highest HHV (36.6 MJ/kg). The catalyst exhibited the highest reaction rate and hydrogenation activity, attributed to the presence of highly dispersed surface Co and Ni species. Notably, after three recycling test, the Ni-LaCoO 3 catalyst maintained very good catalytic activity. These results suggest that catalysts with this composite support have the potential to convert lignin-derived phenolic compounds into higher-grade hydrocarbon liquid fuels.

Abstract:Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) or hydrous pyrolysis is a thermochemical de-polymerisation process in conversion of wet biomass into bio-crude oil and chemicals at moderate temperatures and high pressures. The notable applications of these bio-oils are in boilers, engines and turbines for generation of heat and power or for extraction of chemicals. In this HTL process, experiments were conducted using rice straw as biomass, glycerol as co-solvent and sodium carbonate as catalyst. The effect of temperature (220°C, 240°C, 260°C, 280°C), reaction time (15 min, 30 min, 45 min, 60 min), catalyst dosage (5wt%, 12.5wt%), biomass to water ratio (1:5, 1:10) and glycerol to water ratio (0:10, 5:5) were systematically studied and analysed for evaluation of process performance in terms of yield and selectivity of bio-oil. Central composite design (CCD) was further used to optimize the process variables like temperature, reaction time, catalyst, solvent and co-solvent. Finally, the optimal operating conditions of 12.5 wt% of Na2CO3 at 260°C for 60 min at equal ratios of water and glycerol are established using CCD and were experimentally verified. The obtained product was analysed using elemental analysis, FTIR, GC-MS for determination of properties and it was found that the main compounds constitute ketones, alcohols, phenolics and aldehydes as main compounds in the HTL process.

Abstract:Tungstoborate heteropolyacid catalysts have good catalytic degradation performance, especially for selective cleavage of C–C bonds in biomass. In this paper, the product yield and component distribution of tungstoborate heteropolyacid (BW12)-catalyzed lignin liquefaction were investigated at different parameters, including temperatures (120, 140, 160, 180, and 200 °C), catalyst amount (0, 2.5, 5, 10, and 20 wt. %), and reaction time (0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 min). It was found that a higher conversion (72.16 wt. %) and bio-oil yield (68.41 wt. %) could be obtained under suitable reaction conditions (180 °C, 60 min, 5 wt. %). Bio-oil analysis showed that the BW12 catalyst had a significant effect on the distribution of bio-oil fractions, in which mono-aromatic components increased from 32.96% to 47.56% compared to those without the catalyst. In particular, carbonyl substances in the mono-aromatic components increased from 18.66% to 26.97%. Spectroscopic analysis (FT-IR) found that the absorption peaks of C–O and C–C bonds in the liquefied residue catalyzed by BW12 decreased compared to the raw lignin. Moreover, the mechanism of BW12-catalyzed lignin depolymerization was investigated by DFT simulations. The simulation results demonstrated that the shortening of Cα–O bond, the breaking of Cβ–Cγ and Cα–Cβ bonds in lignin promoted the formation of vanillin and benzaldehyde, 3-hydroxy-4-methoxy. Finally, based on the experimental data and simulation results, a possible reaction pathway for the BW12-catalyzed liquefaction of lignin into mono-aromatic substances was proposed.

Abstract:Hydrothermal liquefaction of woody biomass with catalysts was commonly applied in bio-energy research, but the effects of catalyst and solvent on yield and properties of bio-energy are not clear. In this work, the influences of catalyst and solvent on bio-energy production were studied, during which four solvents and three catalysts were used, and the liquefaction parameters were optimized by experimental and Machine learning (ML) method. Results show that the maximum yields of bio-oil and biochar are 65.0% and 32.0%, respectively, and the caloricvalues of bio-oil and biochar are 31.2 MJ/kg and 26.5 MJ/kg, respectively. Alkaline catalysts and 1,4-butanediol-triethanolamine mix solvent can benefit the bio-energy generation. In addition, a Random Forest (RF) was developed to forecast the yields, and the method performed well with experimental results.

Abstract:Direct converting Kraft lignin into valuable chemicals by catalytic hydrogenolysis is a promising method to develop biomass valorization. In our research, the multifunctional porous carbon material catalyst was prepared for lignin depolymerization reaction. Through the introduction of ammonium oxalate as both foaming agent and nitrogen source increased the carbon materials surface area (608.74 m2/g), which improved the stability and dispersion of Ru and WOx nanoparticles. Based on the catalyst characterization and liquid product composition analysis, the lignin could quickly achieve hydrodeoxygenation process over the connected multi-stage pore structure assisted with Ru metal center and WOx oxophilic sites. Especially, the 96.89 wt% bio-oil yield, 36.85 wt% monomer yield and 20.85 wt% arenes yield were achieved over a porous 5Ru/30WOx/N-C catalyst. Under the optimal reaction condition, the higher heating values of bio-oil could increase to 35.68 MJ/kg. This research provided a new method for catalyst design towards highly efficient and selective hydrogenolysis of lignin to useful aromatic chemicals.

Abstract:Selective conversion of lignin derivatives into value-added chemicals benefits to develop sustainable chemical engineering and material manufacturing. In this work, a hydrotalcite-supported PdNi bimetallic catalyst was synthesized by introducing Ni to promote Pd dispersion and adjust the charge distribution of the active center, which was used for the catalytic hydrogenation of lignin-derived aldehydes in water under mild conditions. At 30 ℃ and 2 MPa H2, PdNi/HT achieved 99 % of vanillin (VAN) conversion with 100 % selectivity of vanillyl alcohol (VAL), and most of the typical lignin-derived aldehydes could be hydrogenated over this catalyst. This catalyst was steady and could be recycled at least five runs. The introduction of Ni and the nanosheet structure of HT improved the dispersion of the metal particles, significantly reducing the metal particle size. Besides, the Pdδ−–Niδ+ pair and the basic sites of HT facilitated the H2 activation and the adsorption of the aldehyde groups of lignin-derived aldehydes on the catalyst surface, enhancing the hydrogenation efficiency and selectivity.
