Abstract:NiMo-doped catalysts were investigated for the conversion of lignin to drop-in fuel through catalytic hydro pyrolysis. The influence of NiMo-doped catalysts with different carriers and Ni/Mo molar ratios on the hydro pyrolysis product distribution were studied using both lignin and lignin model compounds. Two coefficients were proposed to qualitatively evaluate the catalytic performance of NiMo-doped catalysts. Low yield of methane (13.04c%) and high yield of condensable hydrocarbons products (25.82c%) with low selectivity of polyaromatics (4.37%) were obtained at 1.0 MPa H-2 and 400 degrees C catalytic temperature during lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis over Ni1Mo/ZrO2. The hydrodeoxygenation activity of NixMo/ZrO2 depends on Ni-0, Mo4+, and Mo3+. The synergistic effect of Ni and Mo promotes the removal of the phenolic methoxy group. The increase in hydrogen pressure tends to make hydrogen to be consumed through hydrocracking and hydrogenation reactions. The influence of Ni1Mo/ZrO2 on evolution of lignin hydropyrolysis volatiles was revealed. Ni shows strong activity in the removal of phenolic hydroxyl groups and benzene ring hydrogenation, while Mo tends to remove phenolic methoxy groups.
Efficient and controllable alcoholysis of Kraft lignin catalyzed by porous zeolite-supported nickel-copper catalyst

Abstract:The alcoholysis of Kraft lignin was catalyzed by bimetallic Ni-Cu supported on H-Beta, HZSM-5, MAS-7, MCM-41 and SAPO-11 zeolite materials in isopropanol solvent. Results showed that a higher bio-oil yield of 98.80 wt% and monomer yield of 50.83 wt% without obvious char were achieved at 330 °C for 3 h over Ni-Cu/H-Beta catalyst. Isopropanol was found to be more effective in H2 generation and facilitated to the hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenolic compounds. Moreover, the composition of liquid products was also influenced by the acidity and pore structure of catalyst. The superior cycloalkanes yield was produced over Ni-Cu/H-Beta with larger pore size and more acidity. In contrast, a large number of cyclic ketones/alcohols and alkanes were obtained over other zeolites supported catalysts with smaller pore size and less acid content. Besides, the temperature, time and solvent effect on the lignin depolymerization were also researched.

Abstract:In this work, lignin depolymerization was examined over CoMo sulfide catalysts supported on different carriers in supercritical ethanol system. The temperature, time, MoS2 and carrier effects on the lignin depolymerization were investigated. 95.76% liquefaction yield with negligible char was achieved over Co–Mo–S/ZrO2 at 340 °C for 150 min. The liquid product was mainly composed of C4–C8 alcohols, C4–C10 esters and C7–C10 aromatic compounds. The synergistic effect of active sites and acid-base sites on support played an important role in lignin depolymerization. Furthermore, the Co–Mo–S/ZrO2 catalyst is reusable with 8% loss in liquefaction yield after 5 cyclic runs. We believe that acid/base carriers or additives that can promote the medium to generate abundant free radicals or ions to replace external hydrogen pressure are one of the prospects for the design of depolymerization lignin catalysts.

Abstract:A novel Ru-modified composite catalyst, Ru-W/Sn-AlOx, was prepared, and the effects of the catalyst on lignin depolymerization were investigated in this study. The catalyst converted approximately 95% lignin into liquid product at 300 °C in 12 h and 2/3 of the liquid product could be soluble in petroleum ether. The petroleum ether (PE) soluble product was mainly composed of monomers, dimers and some trimmers. This indeed indicated that the catalyst could effectively depolymerize lignin into small-molecule products. 7.22% of monomers was obtained at 310 C for 12 h. Meanwhile, the catalyst effectively reduced the char formation to 2%. After the catalytic depolymerization, the higher heating value (HHV) of the liquid product increased from 25.7 to 32.4 MJ/kg. The product could be utilized as fuel additive or converted to biofuels. This catalysis system showed great potential in the conversion of lignin into biofuels.

Abstract:Due to their diverse functional groups and structural composition, carbon-based catalysts exhibit superior performance in various catalytic reaction systems, such as hydrogenolysis, hydrogenation, and oxidation. Herein, we propose an effective strategy of lignin liquid-phase depolymerization by applying the designed lignin-based carbon catalysts to produce aromatic chemicals. A series of Ni-Mo bimetallic carbon-based catalysts were synthesized to explore the effect of different preparation methods on the catalytic activity. The results demonstrate that the embedded Ni-Mo/C-WMO catalyst with multi-active sites of Ni, MoO3, and Mo2C results in a prominent catalytic effect on lignin depolymerization. The Ni-Mo/C-WMO catalyst can achieve a lignin conversion of 87.62% with a 42.25% monophenol yield in the methanol and water system. With the synergistic contribution of multiple active sites of the catalyst and the mixed-solvent system (water, methanol, and 1, 4-dioxane), a remarkably high yield of 62.95% of mono-phenolic compound was achieved at 260 degrees C and 3 MPa N2 with a reaction time of 4 h. The selectivity of 2methoxy-4-methylphenol and 2-methoxy-4-ethylphenol in liquid products was 40.85 and 36.42%, respectively. Vanillin, a typical product from lignin depolymerization reported in the literature, was further degraded to monophenol in this system. The outcomes also confirmed that the in situ hydrogen production system of methanol and water coupled with 1,4-dioxane facilitated the lignin depolymerization significantly.

Abstract:In this work a method for the depolymerization of lignin by catalytic oxidation was studied. Using H5PMo10V2O40 as the catalyst, various lignin spices including pyrolytic lignin, hydrolytic lignin, alkali lignin, sodium lignosulfonate and calcium lignosulfonate were tested for the oxidative degradation. The influence of reaction conditions, i.e. reaction temperature, solvent, reaction time, initial O-2 pressure and catalyst concentration were investigated. Under optimized conditions, the highest yield of 65.21% of the oxidative degradation products was achieved from pyrolytic lignin, and the main products were aromatic compounds and dimethyl succinate. Abstract:Efficient utilization of lignin to improve the yield of high-quality liquid fuels is desired, but extremely challenging. Ex-situ catalytic pyrolysis of lignin using renewable lignin-carbon (LC) catalysts combined with HZSM-5 was proposed to enhance the aromatic yield in this study. The results showed that preparation parameters including carbonization temperature and heating rate, as well as activation temperature and time, had a great impact on the surface area, porosity and functional groups of LC catalysts. The LC catalyst prepared under the optimal condition (700 ℃, 10 ℃/min, 800 ℃ and 15 min) exhibited excellent depolymerization performances for both lignin and biomass. The total aromatic yield from catalytic pyrolysis of lignin over the optimal LC catalyst combined with HZSM-5 was improved from 29.5 to 50.1 mg/g. Furthermore, LC catalysts also exhibited good renewability and the aromatic yield reached 97.6% of the original value when the regeneration time was 7 min. The mechanism insight showed that, due to their mesoporous structure and weak acid groups, the addition of LC catalysts could not only generate more small-molecular intermediates by depolymerizing the large-molecule intermediates, but also alleviate the deactivation of HZSM-5 caused by coke deposition, thereby increasing the aromatic yield.

Abstract:Solvents and catalysts are two of the most critical factors for the depolymerization of lignin. This paper investigated the effect of different pure solvents on the hydrogenolysis of the β-O-4 MC and one of the mixed solvents on the hydrogenolysis of alkaline lignin. It was found that MC had higher conversion (96.5% and 94.3%) and monophenol yield (83.4 wt% and 77.9 wt%) in ethanol and 1,4-dioxane. The effects of different ratios of mixed solvents (ethanol-H 2 O and 1,4-dioxane-H 2 O), reaction conditions (temperature, time, pressure), and the synergistic effect of alkali and Pd/C catalysts on the hydrogenolysis of alkaline lignin were investigated in this paper. The composition, structure, and distribution of the lignin degradation products were also analyzed by GC, GC–MS, GPC, FT-IR, and 2D-HSQC. The results showed that the optimum monomer yields were 37.5 wt% and 24.7 wt% for ethanol-H 2 O and 1,4-dioxane-H 2 O at 3:2 (v:v) and 2:3 (v:v), respectively. The optimum yields were obtained at 260 °C, 2 MPa H 2 , and 4 h. The properties of solvent (protic polar solvent, nonpolar aprotic solvent) could influence the hydrogenolysis greatly and selectively break bonds. The different ratios of solvents in the mixed solvent systems influenced the solubility of alkaline lignin and its hydrogenolysis results. In addition, the synergistic effect of Pd/C and NaOH could improve the monomer yield and inhibit the polymerization of intermediates in hydrogenolysis.

Abstract:The catalytic depolymerization of alkali lignin into phenolic monomers was studied using subcritical water. In this study, subcritical water was used as the greener solvent with heterogeneous catalysts. The goal of this study was to screen for the best catalyst for the depolymerization, to optimize the reaction conditions, and to increase the yield of the phenolic monomers. The depolymerization reactions were performed at 200 and 240 °C for 5, 10, and 15 min, using subcritical water as the solvent with different catalysts. The treatment of the lignin sample with Ni-Graphene catalyst in subcritical water at 240 °C for 10 min resulted in the highest total yield of phenolic monomers, which was 41.16 ± 0.27 mg/g of alkali lignin. The catalysts also resulted the highest yield for each of the phenolic monomers guaiacol (G), vanillin (G), and homovanillic acid (G) compared to other catalysts studied. The optimized method proved to be an excellent approach to depolymerize alkali lignin.

Abstract:The efficient depolymerization of lignin for the production of high-value chemicals is essential for the development of a sustainable and competitive biorefinery. In this study, we report the preparation of homologous biochar-supported inlaid Cu–Ni catalysts (Cu x Ni y /BC) using a one-step method, and their application for lignin depolymerization in mild water without the need for external hydrogen, additives, or co-catalysts. The Cu 1 Ni 3 /BC (0.05 g catalyst, 8 h, 280 °C, and 18 mL water) showed exceptional catalytic activity, with a monophenol yield of 94.35 ± 2.92 mg/g, bio-oil yield of 68.98 ± 1.42%, and a lignin conversion rate of 92.36 ± 1.99%, which outperformed both the biochar support and monometallic catalysts. The outstanding catalytic performance of Cu 1 Ni 3 /BC was attributed to its strong metal-support interaction, alloy sites, and well-dispersed nanoparticles. Reusability experiments demonstrated that the Cu 1 Ni 3 /BC exhibited relatively good stability for up to four reuses, with only a 2.32% reduction in catalytic activity per cycle. Mechanism investigation revealed that the Cu 1 Ni 3 /BC, with its abundant mesoporous structure and enhanced acid sites, displayed excellent deoxygenation ability, enabling effective cleavage of C–O/C–C bonds and the production of G-type phenols. This approach provides new insights into the large-scale utilization of lignin for the production of high-value chemicals.

Abstract:Here, the zeolite catalysts HY and ZSM-5 were used for liquefaction of lignin in supercritical ethanol (Sc-EtOH) to improve the bio-oil yield and control the product distribution. The effects of the reaction temperature (260–380 °C), reaction time (30–120 min), and catalyst content (5.00–15.00 wt %) were investigated. In Sc-EtOH, lignin treated with 10.00 wt % HY catalyst at 360 °C for 60 min resulted in a bio-oil yield of 59.13 wt % and a total hydrocarbon content of 31.26%. Under the same conditions with 10.00 wt % ZSM-5 catalyst, the bio-oil yield was 51.77 wt % and the total hydrocarbon content was 10.34%. This showed that there were large differences in the bio-oil yield and distribution of hydrocarbons (alkanes, olefins, and aromatic hydrocarbons) using the two catalysts. A large amount of alkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons was produced from lignin in the presence of the HY and ZSM-5 zeolite catalysts, respectively. This revealed that the primary reaction over HY was isomerization, whereas that over ZSM-5 was cleavage.

Abstract:Selective cleavage of the aromatic CO bonds in lignin is a crucial step for lignin valorization to produce value-added chemicals, however, the development of efficient catalysts for mild conversions is still challenging. Herein, non-precious skeletal CuZnAl catalysts were firstly reported for the depolymerisation of lignin dimers and real organosolv lignin via the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) method. Typical lignin dimers, including α-O-4, β-O-4 and 4-O-5 types, were all effectively converted to the corresponding aromatics and alcohols in isopropanol under mild reaction condition. Furthermore, birch organosolv lignin was also well depolymerized into monophenols in 56.1 wt% yield. Experiments revealed that the water brought by the wet catalyst effectively promoted the CO bond cleavage, but slightly decreased the catalyst reactivity toward hydrogenation in isopropanol. Reaction evolution profiles and control experiments suggested that three reaction pathways were included, with the CO ether bond cleavage and subsequent hydrogenolysis taking precedence over the dehydrogenation or hydrodeoxygenation routes. This work provides an economical and environmentally-friendly method for the selective cleavage of lignin and lignin model compounds into value-added chemicals, which holds great promise in industrial application.

Abstract:In order to intrinsically boost the lignin catalytic depolymerization performance of HZSM-5 (HM5) zeolite catalyst, we investigated the depolymerization of lignin-to-aromatic products over different hierarchical HM5 zeolite catalyst to understand the presence of mesoporosity on the catalytic activity in generating aromatic monomers. Firstly, different hierarchical HM-5 zeolite catalyst (HM5, 0.15HM5, 0.35HM5 and 0.75HM5) were prepared by the physical method. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH 3 -TPD) were used to characterize catalysts. Compared with conventional HM5 zeolite catalyst, the hierarchical HM5 (0.35HM5) catalyst showed a significant strengthening effect on the depolymerization of organosolv lignin. Among them, the 4-unsaturated phenolic monomer product was decreased from 0.52 to 0%, the 4-alkyl phenol product was increased from 1.6 to 4.07%, and the no side chain phenolic monomer product was increased from 3.4 to 9.16%. In addition, we also illustrated that the hierarchical 0.35HM5 zeolite catalyst had high stability, and it could be reused for up to five cycles without loss of catalytic activity. It was worth noting that phenolic monomers products produced by hierarchical 0.35HM5 zeolite catalyst had great potential to be a promising renewable alternative to fossil resources.

Abstract:Catalytic depolymerization of Kraft lignin towards valuable liquid fuels and monomeric phenols has been a significant and extremely attractive target, but it remains a great challenge. Herein, we report a catalytic system consisted of bifunctional molybdenum oxide based supported catalyst for catalytic lignin hydroconversion into alkylated benzenes and phenols. In the meantime, the achieved yield of liquid product was 95% and petroleum ether extracted product was 65% at 300celcius for 12 h over 20%MoOx/ZIF-8@ZIF-67 catalyst. The calorific value was increased from 25.66 MJ/ Kg to 34.31 MJ/Kg. The characterization studies show the incorporation of MoOx species leads to the synergy between redox sites and acid sites. The product analysis and catalytic studies demonstrate its synergism to promote catalytic cleavage of C-O linkages via the coupled hydrodeoxygenation and alkylation reaction. The reasonable catalytic mechanism and redox cycle route of catalyst indicate that the cooperative catalytic system paves the way for high-efficiency waste lignin utilization.
Catalytic hydrothermal liquefaction of alkali lignin for monophenols production over homologous biochar-supported copper catalysts in water

Abstract:Constructing an advanced catalytic system for the purposeful liquefaction of lignin into chemicals has presented a significant prospect for sustainable development. In this work, the catalytic process of mesoporous homologous biochar (HBC) derived from alkali lignin supported copper catalysts (Cu/HBC) was reported for catalytic liquefaction of alkali lignin to monophenols. The characterization results revealed HBC promoted the formation of metal-support strong interaction and the generation of oxygen vacancies, enhancing the acid sites of Cu/HBC. Under the optimal conditions (0.2 g alkali lignin, 280 °C, 0.05 g Cu/HBC, 6 h, 18 mL water), the monophenol yield reached 75.01 ± 0.76 mg/g, and the bio-oil yield was 57.98 ± 1.76%. The copious mesopores, high surface area, and rich acidic sites were responsible for the high activity of Cu/HBC, which significantly outperformed the controlled catalysts, such as HBC, commercial activated carbon (AC), and reported Ni/AC, Ni/MCM-41, etc. In four consecutive runs, the catalytic performance of Cu/HBC was only reduced by 3.65% per cycle. Interestingly, catechol was selectively produced with Cu/HBC, which provided an effective strategy for the conversion of G/S-type lignin to catechyl phenolics (C-type). These findings indicate that the Cu/HBC will be a promising substitution of noble metal-supported catalysts for conversion biomass into high value-added phenolics.

Abstract:Catalytic hydrogenation of lignin is one of the most effective methods for valorization of lignin to downstream aromatic compounds. However, the overhydrogenation of benzene rings during lignin hydrogenation could lower the selectivity of monomer aromatics. In this study, novel composite catalysts of Ni loaded on Zr-modified SiO2-Al2O3 support (Ni/SA-Zr) were prepared by simple wet impregnation methods for the reductive depolymerization of lignin. The as-prepared catalyst exhibited high catalytic activity to achieve 66.7% yield of lignin oil and 60.5% lignin monomer. Also, the phenolic selectivity was up to 80.1% under optimal conditions (catalyst 15Ni/SA-Zr, 260 degrees C, 2 MPa H-2, 4 h). The presence of ZrO2 not only improved the catalytic activity of the Ni/SA-Zr catalyst but also inhibited the hydrogenation of the benzene ring. The characterization of the Ni/SA-Zr catalyst showed that the introduction of ZrO2 was beneficial to the dispersion of metallic Ni on the surface of the catalyst. In addition, the interaction between the Ni metal and the support was weakened due to the presence of ZrO2, which was believed to be the main reason for the high activity of the Ni/SA-Zr catalyst in the lignin depolymerization. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectrometry analysis showed that electron-rich Ni species favored the adsorption of hydrogen. However, excess ZrO2 would reduce the activity of the catalyst. The two-dimensional C-13-H-1 heteronuclear single quantum correlation-nuclear magnetic resonance characterization of lignin samples before and after the depolymerization reaction confirmed that lignin was converted to monomeric phenols effectively. Based on the reaction path of the lignin model compound 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol, a possible reaction path of lignin depolymerization was proposed.

Abstract:<p>Lignin catalytic depolymerization (LCD) is generally considered as a sustainable and hopeful technology to obtain liquid fuel and high-value aromatic chemicals. However, a controllable and high-efficiency cleavage of lignin interlinkage has been demonstrated to be prominent challenge. Therefore, we report the catalytic depolymerization of Kraft lignin under supercritical ethanol by using a series of as-prepared Mo/sepiolite (SEP) with different Mo content. Mo/SEP catalysts present excellent activity for lignin deploymerization and Mo content significantly affects the conversion of lignin and yields of lignin oil (LO) and petroleum ether soluble product. This is attributed to the synergistically catalyzed effect among L/B acid sites, terminal oxygen and Mo active species. Amongst, 40Mo/SEP shows the highest lignin conversion (98.6%) and LO yield (84.3%) at 290 °C for 3 h, where the yield of PE-soluble product reaching to 70.8% (mainly monomers and dimers). Under these conditions, the obtained LO is mainly consisted of substituted alkylphenols and has a HHV of 34.69 MJ/kg, which is a significant increase from 22.83 MJ/kg of Kraft lignin. According to adequate analyses, the possible mechanism of LCD under supercritical ethanol over 40Mo/SEP was proposed. Wherein, the surface acid sites promote the break of lignin ether linkage (such as C–O bond) and terminal oxygen as hydrogen bond site activates ethanol molecules, then the synergistic effect between L/B acid sites and active Mo species enhance the hydrodeoxygenation and aromatic side-chain isomerization and alkylation reactions.</p>

Abstract:Direct converting Kraft lignin into valuable chemicals by catalytic hydrogenolysis is a promising method to develop biomass valorization. In our research, the multifunctional porous carbon material catalyst was prepared for lignin depolymerization reaction. Through the introduction of ammonium oxalate as both foaming agent and nitrogen source increased the carbon materials surface area (608.74 m2/g), which improved the stability and dispersion of Ru and WOx nanoparticles. Based on the catalyst characterization and liquid product composition analysis, the lignin could quickly achieve hydrodeoxygenation process over the connected multi-stage pore structure assisted with Ru metal center and WOx oxophilic sites. Especially, the 96.89 wt% bio-oil yield, 36.85 wt% monomer yield and 20.85 wt% arenes yield were achieved over a porous 5Ru/30WOx/N-C catalyst. Under the optimal reaction condition, the higher heating values of bio-oil could increase to 35.68 MJ/kg. This research provided a new method for catalyst design towards highly efficient and selective hydrogenolysis of lignin to useful aromatic chemicals.

Abstract:Catalytic hydrogenolysis of CO bonds in lignin provides a promising route to produce high value-added biofuels and chemicals. However, designing highly active and stable catalysts for this process is still a challenge. Herein, a series of Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalysts were synthesized by calcination and reduction of layered double hydroxide precursors, and their activities were evaluated in the catalytic conversion of lignin-derived compounds. Diphenyl ether was completely converted with a 100% monomeric selectivity (cyclohexane and cyclohexanol) over the optimized Ni/Al 2 O 3 -500 under the optimal conditions of 200 °C, 0.5 MPa H 2 and 1.5 h, indicating the excellent catalytic activity in the cleavage of CO bonds of the catalyst. The excellent catalytic performances of Ni/Al 2 O 3 -500 were originated from its relatively large specific surface area, well-developed porosity, small crystallite size, high Ni 0 concentration and strong interaction between the active metal and support. The reusability experiments show that Ni/Al 2 O 3 -500 possesses a relatively high stability for six reuses. Moreover, various lignin model compounds can be completely converted to corresponding monomeric products over Ni/Al 2 O 3 -500, indicating the applicability of this ingenious catalyst. The application of the hydrotalcite-derived Ni-based catalysts with high activity and stability provides a promising approach for the efficient hydrogenolysis of lignin derivatives.
