Abstract:We present a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy investigation revealing the formation of a long range ordered alpha-sexithiophene (6T) monolayer nanostripe array on highly ordered pyrolytic graphite, with thiophene ring units oriented parallel to the surface. The 6T monolayer nanostripe is an effective molecular nanotemplate for the assembly of an ordered "zigzag" C-60 chain array, accompanied by a slight structural modification of the underlying 6T nanostripes due to donor-acceptor intermolecular interactions between 6T and C-60 molecules. Abstract:We have studied the growth of C60 film on GaAs(001) 2×4-β phase surface epitaxially grown by MBE.Due to the delicate equilibrium between the interaction of C60 molecules and the interaction of C60 molecule with the substrate,the toplayer of C60 film,unlike that on the metal and silicon substrate,shows a non-close packed structure.The facet structure of C60 film exhibits that the top-two layers are hcp but the others are fcc,which implies an existence of the phase-transition from hcp to fcc structure in the film growth.The measurement results that the lattice constant of fcc is 1.13 nm,larger of 13% than that of C60 crystal,and hcp is not ideal which is compressed along c-axis.The strain in C60 film and the minimum of the total energy should be responsible for the existence of the phase-transition.On GaAs(001)-c(4×4) surface,the structure of C60 film shows fcc(111) surface and the film grows in three-dimensional mode which is quite different from that on other substrates.

Abstract:Understanding of the continuity and the microscopic structure of as-grown graphene on Cu foils through the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method is of fundamental significance for optimizing the growth parameters toward high-quality graphene. Because of the corrugated nature of the Cu foil surface, few experimental efforts on this issue have been made so far. We present here a high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) study of CVD graphene directly on Cu foils. Our work indicates that graphene can be grown with a perfect continuity extending over both crystalline and noncrystalline regions, highly suggestive of weak graphene-substrate interactions. Due to thermal expansion mismatch, defect-like wrinkles and ripples tend to evolve either along the boundaries of crystalline terraces or on noncrystalline areas for strain relief. Furthermore, the strain effect arising from the conforming of perfect two-dimensional graphene to the highly corrugated surface of Cu foils is found to induce local bonding configuration change of carbon from sp(2) to sp(3), evidenced by the formation of "three-for-six" lattices.

Abstract:Endohedral metallofullerene Tb@C-82 molecules adsorbed on the C-60 film and Si(100) 2 x 1 have been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The C-60 film was obtained by depositing 2-3 monolayers (ML) of C-60 molecules on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface. Tb@C-82 molecules have great mobility and aggregate along the edges of terraces on the C-60 film, and form a close-packing monolayer with increasing coverage. Very few trimers or dimers were imaged on the surface of C-60 film. In contrast, the Tb@C82 Molecules were randomly distributed on the surface of Si(100). These nucleation behaviors of Tb@C-82 molecules can be explained by the interaction of Tb@C-82-Si and Tb@C-82-Tb@C-82 that were brought on by the permanent dipole moment of Tb@C-82 Molecules.

Abstract:The orientational configurations of C-60 molecules on the surface of a multilayer C-60 island with a (111)-terminating plane were studied at 78 K by using a scanning tunneling microscope. A 2x2 superlattice, which resulted from the orientational ordering of the C-60 molecules, was observed. In each unit cell of the superlattice, one C-60 molecule with a three-lobe intramolecular pattern, and three C-60 molecules with dumbbell-like intramolecular patterns, were clearly resolved. In combination with the theoretical analysis and simulation, the orientational configurations of the C-60 molecules were determined.

Abstract:Ultrathin fullerene (C 60 ) films on various metal and semiconductor substrates have been intensively studied but not yet on a perovskite oxide substrate. Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we investigated the molecular arrangement and electronic structure of C 60 ultrathin films grown on a SrTiO 3 (001) surface. Subject to strong coupling and weak screening from the substrate, the monolayer C 60 exhibit short-range ordered molecular arrangement with disordered molecular orientation and a substantially large highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) gap (∼ 4.1 eV). In contrast, C 60 in the 2 nd and 3 rd layers are self-assembled into hexagon lattices with a quasi-(2×2) superstructure resulted from the arrangement of molecular orientations showing a chiral pinwheel structure. The HOMO-LUMO gap of the multi-layer C 60 further expands to ∼ 4.6 eV, very close to that of gas-phase C 60 , indicating a negligible inter-layer screening effect.

Abstract:C60 molecules adsorbed on graphene/Ru(0001) substrate were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at 5 K. On high quality substrates, C60 molecules adopt a commensurate growth mode, leading to formation of a supramolecular structure with perfect periodicity and few defects. On under-annealed substrates with imperfections and domains, the molecules form the same closely packed hexagonal structures in spite of underlying corrugations, disorders or steps, indicating a weak molecule-substrate interaction—a conclusion that is also supported by DFT calculations. This system may be beneficial to the fabrication of carbon based devices and of other types of organic functional overlayers.

Abstract:Alkali-doped fullerides exhibit a wealth of unusual phases that remain controversial by nature. Here we report a cryogenic scanning tunneling microscopy study of the submolecular structural and electronic properties of expanded fullerene C-60(n-) films with various cesium dopings. By varying the discrete charge states and film thicknesses, we reveal a large tunability of orientational ordering of C-60(n-) anions, yet the tunneling conductance spectra are all robustly characteristic of energy gaps, hallmarks of Jahn-Teller instability and electronic correlations. The Fermi level lies halfway within the insulating gap for stoichiometric Cs doping level of n = 1, 2, 3, and 4, apart from which it moves toward band edges with concomitant electronic states within the energy gap. Our findings establish the universality of Jahn-Teller instability and clarify the relationship between the doping and structural and electronic properties in CsnC60 fullerides.

Abstract:A compressed Cs layer embedded in bulk crystal of kagome superconductor, CsV3Sb5, is demonstrated to be an appropriate substrate to fabricate Cs thin films with the face‐centered cubic structure, which is typically realized only under high pressure in bulk Cs. The present results provide a useful guiding principle for introducing significant lattice strain in the homoepitaxial technique. Applying lattice strain to thin films, a critical factor to tailor their properties such as stabilizing a structural phase unstable at ambient pressure, generally necessitates heteroepitaxial growth to control the lattice mismatch with substrate. Therefore, while homoepitaxy, the growth of thin film on a substrate made of the same material, is a useful method to fabricate high‐quality thin films, its application to studying strain‐induced structural phases is limited. Contrary to this general belief, here the quasi‐homoepitaxial growth of Cs and Rb thin films is reported with substantial in‐plane compressive strain. This is achieved by utilizing the alkali‐metal layer existing in bulk crystal of kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A = Cs and Rb) as a structural template. The angle‐resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements reveal the formation of metallic quantum well states and notable thickness‐dependent quasiparticle lifetime. Comparison with density functional theory calculations suggests that the obtained thin films crystalize in the face‐centered cubic structure, which is typically stable only under high pressure in bulk crystals. These findings provide a useful approach for synthesizing highly strained thin films by quasi‐homoepitaxy, and pave the way for investigating many‐body interactions in Fermi liquids with tunable dimensionality.

Abstract:We studied the growth and structure of C60 thin film condensed on NaCl, glass and mica substrates by transmission electron microscopy. Highly ordered, (111) textured and epitaxial thin films were obtained on (001) NaCl and mica respectively. Various deposition parameters including different substrate temperatures, deposition rates and film thicknesses were experimented with. The orientational order and nature of defects present in the films were assessed by electron diffraction, bright and dark field images. We ascribe the abnormal reflections in the electron diffraction patterns which had been thought by some workers to belong to the diffraction of an h.c.p. structure phase to the existence of stacking disorder in the f.c.c. structure.

Abstract:Scanning tunneling microscopy investigation shows that C60 molecules adsorbed on graphite tend to form clusters of different sizes, which often further aggregate to form massive stacks. Occasionally, the molecules can form quasi-close-packed monolayer structures in small areas. From these areas, with low bias voltages and high tunnel currents we have obtained STM images of C60 molecules, which have the highest resolution and contain the richest structural features, in comparison with those C60 images obtained in previous works. The success of obtaining those low-bias images indicates that those molecules had electronic states around EF. This fact together with the fact that the C60 molecules imaged in the high resolution images were not rotating imply that the graphite substrate may have strong interaction with C60 molecules. We believe that those atomic-scale features are closely related to the intramolecular structure of C60, even though to interpret them in terms of the molecular structure needs further investigation.
Band structures of strained Kagome lattices

Abstract:Materials with kagome lattice have attracted significant research attention due to their nontrivial features in energy bands. In this work, we theoretically investigate the evolution of electronic band structures of kagome lattice in response to uniaxial strain using both a tight-binding model and an antidot model based on a periodic muffin-tin potential. It is found that the Dirac points move with applied strain. Furthermore, the flat band of unstrained kagome lattice is found to develop into a highly anisotropic shape under a stretching strain along y direction, forming a partially flat band with a region dispersionless along ky direction while dispersive along kx direction. Our results shed light on the possibility of engineering the electronic band structures of kagome materials by mechanical strain.

Abstract:The structural and electronic properties of Gd@C-82 adsorbed on Cu(111) and Cu(100) surfaces were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). STM images showed that the lattice structure of the underlying metal substrates affected the arrangement of the metallofullerene molecules. Preferred adsorption orientations of the molecules were found from STM images with submolecular resolution. Differences in the scanning tunneling spectroscopy of molecules adsorbed on Cu(111) and Cu(100) were observed and attributed to the work function difference between the substrates. In addition, the electronic properties of the fullerene monomer, dimer, and monolayer were characterized and compared, revealing the roles played by the molecule-substrate interaction and the intermolecular interaction.

Abstract:The crystal structure and defect structures of C60 material have been studied by means of X-ray diffraction, high-resolution electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The diffraction measurements show that the C60 Crystal has the face-centered cubic (fcc) structure with lattice parameter a = 1.42 nm. High-resolution electron microscopy observations, combined with the analyses of selected area electron diffraction, indicate that the coherent twins situated in the {1 1 1} planes frequently appear in the C60 crystal. The disordered stacking along the [1 1 1] direction and other kinds of defects appearing in the new material have also been investigated. Upon in situ cooling and heating from 130 K to 700 K, the structural stability of the C60 Crystal has been observed.

Abstract:Orientationally ordered structures of two-dimensional (2D) C-60 at low temperature have been investigated theoretically and experimentally. Using total energy optimization with a phenomenological potential, we find the ground state is a close packed hexagonal lattice in which all the molecules have the same orientation. Several local minima of the potential energy surface are found to be associated with other 1 x 1 lattices as well as 2 x 2 lattices. The energies of the orientational domain boundaries of the 1 x 1 lattices are also computed, and two kinds of which yield negative values. A majority of these theoretical findings are confirmed by our low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy study of a 2D C-60 array supported on a self-assembled monolayer.

Abstract:Low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been used to identify the molecular orientation of individual C60 on Si(111)-(7 × 7) surfaces. The STM images of individual C60 reveal clear and rich intramolecular features that are site and bias dependent. Theoretical simulations, using the local density approximation method with cluster models, uniquely reproduce the observed STM images and hence allow the unambiguous identification of the binding configurations of the adsorbed fullerenes with respect to the Si substrate. © 1999 The American Physical Society.
