Abstract:Near 100% photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) is the first target for designing luminescent quantum dots (QDs). Here, an alloyed QD with a core/shell structure of Cd0.194Zn0.806Se0.406S0.594/ZnS is synthesized and characterized by the feature of large core size (about 10 nm) and thin shell (around three ZnS monolayers). It exhibits an efficient green emission with the PL QY of 99.8% and ultra-fast radiative transition rate (kr) of 4.16 x 107 s-1. It demonstrates that the excited state will be rapidly decayed to its ground state through a radiative channel and less vulnerable to non-radiative processes. Under a high pump intensity (254.65 mu J cm - 2), the Cd0.194Zn0.806Se0.406S0.594/ZnS QD still owns a long biexciton decay lifetime (tau xx) of 1.05 ns and high biexciton QYxx of 25.1%, corresponding to a suppressed non-radiative Auger recombination. The Cd0.194Zn0.806Se0.406S0.594/ZnS QD based light-emitting diode exhibits a peak external quantum efficiency of 20.1% and brightness of over105 cd m-2 at 5.2 V. We believe that the Cd0.194Zn0.806Se0.406S0.594/ZnS QD not only provides a near-unity QY but also ensures its QD based light-emitting diode (QLED) with an excellent performance, which could be an excellent QD material for QLED applications.

Abstract:Colloidal quantum dots (QDs), as a class of zero‐dimensional semiconductor materials, have generated widespread interest due to their adjustable band gap, exceptional color purity, near‐unity quantum yield, and solution‐processability. With decades of dedicated research, the potential applications of quantum dots have garnered significant recognition in both the academic and industrial communities. Furthermore, the related quantum dot light‐emitting diodes (QLEDs) stand out as one of the most promising contenders for the next‐generation display technologies. Although QD‐based color conversion films have been applied to improve the color gamut of existing display technologies, the broader application of QLED devices remains in its nascent stages, facing many challenges on the path to commercialization. This review encapsulates the historical discovery and subsequent research advancements in QD materials and their synthesis methods. Additionally, the working mechanisms and architectural design of QLED prototype devices are discussed. Furthermore, the review surveys the latest advancements of QLED devices within the display industry. Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) are a unique class of emitters with size-tunable emission wavelengths, saturated emission colors, near-unity luminance efficiency, inherent photo- and thermal- stability and excellent solution processability. In the past few years, efficiency and lifetime of quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) achieved tremendous progress. These encouraging facts foreshadow the commercialization of QLEDs, which promises an unprecedented generation of cost-effective, large-area, energy-saving, wide-color-gamut, ultra-thin and flexible displays. Here we review our activities associated with QLEDs, including exciton-generation mechanisms, material chemistry of charge-transporting layers and device engineering.

Abstract:Colloidal silicon quantum dots(Si QDs) hold great promise for the development of printed Si electronics. Given their novel electronic and optical properties, colloidal Si QDs have been intensively investigated for optoelectronic applications. Among all kinds of optoelectronic devices based on colloidal Si QDs, QD light-emitting diodes(LEDs) play an important role. It is encouraging that the performance of LEDs based on colloidal Si QDs has been significantly increasing in the past decade. In this review, we discuss the effects of the QD size, QD surface and device structure on the performance of colloidal Si-QD LEDs. The outlook on the further optimization of the device performance is presented at the end.

Abstract:The unique features of solution-processed quantum dots (QDs) including emission tunability in the visible range, high-quality saturated color and outstanding intrinsic stability in environment are highly desired in various application fields. Especially, for the preparation of wide color gamut displays, QDs with high photoluminescence quantum yield are deemed as the optimal fluorescent emitter that has been utilized in the backlight for liquid crystal display. Nevertheless, the commercialization of electrically driven self-emissive quantum dot light-emitting diode (QLED) display is the ultimate target due to its merits of high contrast, slim configuration and compatibility with flexible substrate. Through the great efforts devoted to material engineering and device configuration, astonishing progresses have been made in device performance, giving the QLED technology a great chance to compete with other counterparts for next-generation displays. In this review, we retrospect the development roadmap of QLED technology and introduce the essential principles in the QLED devices. Moreover, we discuss the key factors that affect the QLED efficiency and lifetime. Finally, the advances in device architectures and pixel patterning are also summarized.

Abstract:Quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QD-LEDs) are considered as competitive candidate for next-generation displays or lightings. Recent advances in the synthesis of core/shell quantum dots (QDs) and tailoring procedures for achieving their high quantum yield have facilitated the emergence of high-performance QD-LEDs. Meanwhile, the charge-carrier dynamics in QD-LED devices, which constitutes the remaining core research area for further improvement of QD-LEDs, is, however, poorly understood yet. Here, we propose a charge transport model in which the charge-carrier dynamics in QD-LEDs are comprehensively described by computer simulations. The charge-carrier injection is modelled by the carrier-capturing process, while the effect of electric fields at their interfaces is considered. The simulated electro-optical characteristics of QD-LEDs, such as the luminance, current density and external quantum efficiency (EQE) curves with varying voltages, show excellent agreement with experiments. Therefore, our computational method proposed here provides a useful means for designing and optimising high-performance QD-LED devices.

Abstract:In terms of their use in displays, quantum dots (QDs) exhibit several advantages, including high illumination efficiency and color rendering, low-cost, and capacity for mass production. Furthermore, they are environmentally friendly. Excellent luminescence and charge transport properties of QDs led to their application in QD-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which have attracted considerable attention in display and solid-state lighting applications. In this review, we discuss the applications of QDs which are used on color conversion filter that exhibit high efficiency in white LEDs, full-color micro-LED devices, and liquid-type structure devices, among others. Furthermore, we discuss different QD printing processes and coating methods to achieve the full-color micro-LED. With the rise in popularity of wearable and see-through red, green, and blue (RGB) full-color displays, the flexible substrate is considered as a good potential candidate. The anisotropic conductive film method provides a small controllable linewidth of electrically conductive particles. Finally, we discuss the advanced application for flexible full-color and highly efficient QD micro-LEDs. The general conclusion of this study also involves the demand for a more straightforward QD deposition technique, whose breakthrough is expected.

Abstract:Quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) have been identified as a next-generation display technology owing to their low-cost manufacturing, wide color gamut, and electrically driven self-emission properties. However, the efficiency and stability of blue QLEDs still pose a significant challenge, limiting their production and potential application. This review aims to analyse the factors leading to the failure of blue QLEDs and presents a roadmap to accelerate their development based on the progress made in the synthesis of II-VI (CdSe, ZnSe) quantum dots (QDs), III-V (InP) QDs, carbon dots, and perovskite QDs. The proposed analysis will include discussions on material synthesis, core-shell structures, ligand interactions, and device fabrication, providing a comprehensive overview of these materials and their development.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have attracted much attention owing to their unique optical properties and a wide range of applications. The fabrication and control of CQDs with organic solubility and long-wavelength emission are still urgent issues to be addressed for their practical use in LEDs. Here, organic-soluble CQDs were produced at a high yield of similar to 90% by a facile solvent engineering treatment of 1,3,6-trinitropyrene, which were simultaneously used as the nitrogen and carbon sources. The optical properties of the organic-soluble CQDs (o-CQDs) were investigated in nonpolar and polar solvents, films, and LED devices. The CQDs have a narrow size distribution around 2.66 nm, and can be dispersed in different organic solvents. Significantly, the as-prepared CQDs present an excitation-independent emission at 607 nm with fluorescence quantum yields (QYs) up to 65.93% in toluene solution. A pronounced solvent effect was observed and their strong absorption bands can be tuned in the whole visible region (400-750 nm) by changing the solvent. The CQDs in various solvents can emit bright, excitation-independent, long-wavelength fluorescence (orange to red). Furthermore, benefiting from the unique oil-solution properties, the as-prepared CQDs can be processed in thin film and device forms to meet the requirements of various applications, such as phosphor-based white-light LEDs. The color coordinate for these CQD modified LEDs is realized at (0.32, 0.31), which is close to pure white light (0.33, 0.33).
Tailoring Nanostructures of Quantum Dots toward Efficient and Stable All-Solution Processed Quantum Dot Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) are considered the most promising candidate for application in displays. While the efficiency of QLEDs has been greatly developed in recent years and is comparable to that of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), it still remains challenging to realize both high efficiency and long lifetimes. In this work, we report efficient and stable red QLEDs with the maximum current efficiency of 13.48 cd A<sup>-1</sup>, external quantum efficiency of 18.65%, and low efficiency roll-off at high luminance with a long lifetime exceeding ∼2.9 × 10<sup>5</sup> h, representing a 3-fold increase in stability. Tailoring the composition of QDs suppresses nonradiative Förster resonant energy transfer and Auger recombination and provides favorable valence band alignment to boost the hole injection. Our work suggests that tailoring the nanostructures of QDs offers an effective means to simultaneously achieve high efficiency and high stability, accelerating QLED technology for practical applications in displays and lighting.

Abstract:Quantum‐dot light‐emitting diodes (QLEDs) show a promising application in displays. However, challenges in QLED industrialization remain, including unclear device mechanisms, low performance of blue QLEDs, and immature color patterning. This paper reviews recent advancements addressing these challenges, covering an overview of device mechanisms and degradation, progress in blue QLEDs, and color patterning. Light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) based on colloidal quantum‐dots (QDs) such as CdSe, InP, and ZnSeTe feature a unique advantage of narrow emission linewidth of ≈20 nm, which can produce highly accurate colors, making them a highly promising technology for the realization of displays with Rec. 2020 color gamut. With the rapid development in the past decades, the performances of red and green QLEDs have been remarkably improved, and their efficiency and lifetime can almost meet industrial requirements. However, the industrialization of QLED displays still faces many challenges; for example, (1) the device mechanisms including the charge injection/transport/leakage, exciton quenching, and device degradation are still unclear, which fundamentally limit QLED performance improvement; (2) the blue performances including the efficiency, chromaticity, and stability are relatively low, which are still far from the requirements of practical applications; (3) the color patterning processes including the ink‐jet printing, transfer printing, and photolithography are still immature, which restrict the manufacturing of high resolution full‐color QLED displays. Here, the recent advancements attempting to address the above challenges of QLED displays are specifically reviewed. After a brief overview of QLED development history, device structure/principle, and performances, the main focus is to investigate the recent discoveries on device mechanisms with an emphasis on device degradation. Then recent progress is introduced in blue QLEDs and color patterning. Finally, the opportunities, challenges, solutions, and future research directions of QLED displays are summarized.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have shown great potential in optoelectronic applications. Very recently, CQDs have attracted much attention in white-emitting diodes (WLEDs) for lighting due to their characteristic broad emission, tunable fluorescence emission and high thermal stability. This mini review updates the latest research in the design of high-performance WLEDs with different correlated color temperatures by tuning the red component using red emissive CQDs and single-component white emissive CQDs (SCWE-CQDs). The prospects for the development of CQD based WLEDs with higher efficiency and color quality will be discussed.

Abstract:Crystalline structure‐dependent electronic properties have been understood thoroughly in quantum dot light‐emitting diodes in this work. QD‐LEDs can simultaneously exhibit high external quantum efficiency, roll‐off‐free under high brightness, and dramatically improved operation stability by crystal phase engineering. Quantum dot light‐emitting diodes (QD‐LEDs) are highly promising light sources with excellent figures of merit. Although great successes have been achieved in elevating some key parameters to an ideal level, QD‐LEDs with superior performance in all aspects have rarely been realized. Herein, by exploring crystalline structure‐dependent electronic properties, it is shown that QD‐LEDs can simultaneously exhibit high external quantum efficiency, roll‐off‐free under high brightness, and dramatically improved operational stability. This improved performance stems from the crystal phase engineering of QD. Reduced structure symmetry in the wurtzite phase introduces an unneglectable internal crystal field compared with the zinc‐blende one, which raises both the conduction and valence band energy levels, thus, facilitating a more balanced charge injection. The crystal phase‐optimized superior‐comprehensive performance in the QD‐LED offers a novel degree of freedom for device engineering and promotes commercial applications for the upcoming display and illumination technologies.

Abstract:Quantum dots are a unique class of emitters with size‐tunable emission wavelengths, saturated emission colors, near‐unity luminance efficiency, inherent photo‐ and thermal‐ stability and excellent solution processability. Quantum dots have been used as down‐converters for back‐lighting in liquid‐crystal displays to improve color gamut, leading to the booming of quantum‐dot televisions in consumer market. In the past few years, efficiency and lifetime of electroluminescence devices based on quantum dots achieved tremendous progress. These encouraging facts foreshadow the commercialization of quantum‐dot light‐emitting diodes (QLEDs), which promises an unprecedented generation of cost‐effective, large‐area, energy‐saving, wide‐color‐gamut, ultra‐thin and flexible displays. Here we provide a Progress Report, covering interdisciplinary aspects including material chemistry of quantum dots and charge‐transporting layers, optimization and mechanism studies of prototype devices and processing techniques to produce large‐area and high‐resolution red‐green‐blue pixel arrays. We also identify a few key challenges facing the development of active‐matrix QLED displays.

Abstract:Quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) may combine superior properties of colloidal quantum dots (QDs) and advantages of solution-based fabrication techniques to realize high-performance, large-area, and low-cost electroluminescence devices. In the state-of-the-art red QLED, an ultrathin insulating layer inserted between the QD layer and the oxide electron-transporting layer (ETL) is crucial for both optimizing charge balance and preserving the QDs' emissive properties. However, this key insulating layer demands very accurate and precise control over thicknesses at sub-10 nm level, causing substantial difficulties for industrial production. Here, it is reported that interfacial exciton quenching and charge balance can be independently controlled and optimized, leading to devices with efficiency and lifetime comparable to those of state-of-the-art devices. Suppressing exciton quenching at the ETL-QD interface, which is identified as being obligatory for high-performance devices, is achieved by adopting Zn0.9Mg0.1O nanocrystals, instead of ZnO nanocrystals, as ETLs. Optimizing charge balance is readily addressed by other device engineering approaches, such as controlling the oxide ETL/cathode interface and adjusting the thickness of the oxide ETL. These findings are extended to fabrication of high-efficiency green QLEDs without ultrathin insulating layers. The work may rationalize the design and fabrication of high-performance QLEDs without ultrathin insulating layers, representing a step forward to large-scale production and commercialization.

Abstract:This review focuses on the history and current state of the art optoelectronic applications of quantum dots involving light emission. We focus mainly on three areas of commercial, or potential commercial interest, including quantum dot light emitting devices (QLEDs, sometimes called QD-LEDs), lasing applications, and quantum computing applications. The main connection between these areas is the development of the science and engineering needed to achieve electrical excitation of the quantum dot in an optoelectronic device in order to achieve emission with characteristics particularly suited to the application in question. Due to the special physics of quantum dots, these materials are particularly well suited for both existing commercial applications, and potentially for future applications, such as single photon sources, spin cubits, or polarized emission. We conclude with an analysis of the future prospects for these exciting materials. Given 30 years of progress since the Nobel Prize winning work on monodisperse samples of QDs, our goal is to highlight the current start of the art, discuss the current issues for each technology, and suggest future goals for the next 30 years for quantum dot research.

Progress in Quantum Electronics

Abstract:The outstanding properties of wide and flexibly tunable emission range, high color saturation, and cost-effectiveness make quantum dots (QDs) promising candidates in display field. However, the vast majority of QDs used in high-performance display devices contain toxic elements such as cadmium (Cd) or lead (Pb). In recent years, with increasing attention to physical health and ecological environment, the application of eco-friendly QDs in light-emitting diodes (LEDs) has been vigorously explored through tremendous efforts in material engineering and device architecture. The external quantum efficiency (EQE) of red InP-based and blue ZnSe-based quantum dot light-emitting diode (QLED) has exceeded 21.4% and 20.2%, which owns good stability and high color purity. In this review, the recent research progress of three major projects implemented on four types of eco-friendly QDs, including existing challenges and possible solutions, and their feedback on device performance are summarized, aiming to provide guidance for the further development of eco-friendly QLEDs.

Abstract:Lighting and display, relying on electric and optical down-conversion emission with sluggish power efficiency, account for >15% global electricity consumption1,2. In 2014, quantum-dot (QD) LEDs (QLEDs) with near-optimal external quantum efficiency emerged3 and promised a pathway to avoid the vast down-conversion energy loss4,5. Despite a decade of progress4-22, fabrication of energy-efficient QLEDs with application-relevant brightness remains elusive. Here, the main roadblock is identified as the oxidative species adsorbed in the nanocrystalline electron-injection layer of QLEDs, which is then addressed by a simple reductive treatment to simultaneously boosts electron conductivity and hole blockage of the electron-injection layer. The resulting sub-bandgap-driven QLEDs with optimal efficiency achieve ultra-high brightness across the entire visible spectrum at least 2.6-fold higher than existing benchmarks. The brightness fully satisfies the demands of various forms of lighting and display, which surges to a remarkable level sufficient for QD laser diodes with a moderate bias (~9 V). Optimized electron injection further enables new types of QD-blend LEDs for diffuse white-light sources surpassing the 2035 R&D targets set by the U.S. Department of Energy. Our findings open a door for understanding and optimizing carrier transport in nanocrystalline semiconductors shared by various types of solution-processed optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Full-color display is a primary challenge for the commercialization of quantum dots (QDs). In this study, we utilize the spectral narrowing phenomenon of microcavities to fabricate the red, green and blue quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) with a single QD layer. This work theoretically analyses the role of microcavities in adjusting the emitting color of QLEDs. By enhanced microcavity and properly chosen spacer thickness, the spectral selectivity shifts, realizing the full-color-tunability of QLEDs. The tunable experimental spectra of microcavity QLEDs are observed, in excellent agreement with our theoretical design. Benefiting from the spectral narrowing of microcavity and the narrow spectra of QDs, a high color purity with full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 18 to 25 nm is realized, leading to a color gamut ratio of 104.8 compared to National Television System Committee (NTSC) standard. The light extraction is also enhanced by constructive interference and the Purcell effect in the microcavity. Moreover, in the fabrication of red, green, and blue pixels, patterning the transparent cathode has better feasibility and lower damage relative to patterning the light-emitting layer.
