Abstract:Comparisons of properties are made for pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) generated via emulsion polymerization using both conventional and reactive emulsifiers The emulsifiers are ammonium salts of sulfated nonylphenol ethoxylates with similar chemical structures and hydrophilic lipophilic balances. The polymerizable surfactant possesses a reactive double bond at its phenyl ring allowing for participation in free radical polymerization reactions. Incorporation of the polymerizable surfactant into the adhesive polymer was confirmed via reverse-phase liquid chromatography. Surfactant distributions in PSA films were characterized using confocal Raman microscopy and contact angle measurements. Increasing conventional surfactant concentrations in emulsion polymerization, reactions resulted in proportional increases in concentrations at the surfaces of latex-cast films. No surface enrichment of adhesive films was observed when reactive emulsifiers were employed. Variations in measured depth profiles and contact angles are consistent with observed performance properties, for example, tack, peel strength, and shear times. Increasing concentrations of conventional surfactants decreased adhesive performance, while adhesives generated with polymerizable surfactants showed little or no such decreases in film performance properties. It is concluded that the polymerizable surfactant is bound in the adhesive in such a way that its migration to film surfaces during drying and formation is inhibited, preventing degradation of adhesive performance.

Abstract:Pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) are extensively used in diverse applications such as semiconductor manufacturing, labeling, and healthcare because of their quick and viscoelasticity-driven physical adhesion to dry surfaces. However, most of the existing PSAs normally fail to maintain or even establish adhesion under harsh conditions, particularly underwater, due to the lack of robust chemical functionalities for chemistry-based adhesion. Meanwhile, these PSAs are incapable of altering the adhesion in response to external stimuli, limiting their employment in applications requiring dynamic adhesion. Here, we develop a chemically functionalized PSA (f-PSA) with enhanced and phototunable underwater adhesion by incorporating an underwater adhesion enhancer (i.e., mussel-inspired catechol) and a photoresponsive functionality (i.e., anthracene) into a standard acrylic PSA matrix. The synergistic coupling of viscoelasticity-driven physical adhesion originating from the matrix with catechol-enabled chemical adhesion secures sufficient interfacial molecular interactions and leads to enhanced underwater adhesion. The efficient dimerization of anthracene via light-triggered cycloaddition facilely mediates the viscoelastic property of f-PSA, rendering the phototunable adhesion. We envision that this f-PSA can open up more opportunities for applications such as underwater manipulation, transfer printing, and medical adhesives.
Repositionable Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive Possessing Thermal-Stimuli Switchable Transparency

Abstract:Described is the formulation for a repositionable pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) capable of reversibly switching between opaque and transparent via a thermal trigger. The smart adhesive is generated by casting films from a solution of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), its organometallic crosslinker and a paraffin wax/dodecane solution on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) sheets. Once cured, the PDMS/paraffin wax composite films demonstrate characteristics consistent with commercial repositionable PSAs. Properties were found to be dependent on the paraffin wax content and degree of crosslinking in the PDMS. Performance of the developed adhesive films is highly stable remaining unchanged subsequent to extended use and repeated repositioning. The appearance of the films can be switched between opaque at room temperature to transparent for temperatures above 53 °C. The change in optical properties is nearly instantaneous and there appears to be no limitation on how many times the cycle can be repeated. The mechanism involved is unique involving the melting of the paraffin wax, which appears to allow for the formation of a more homogeneous composite structure. This adhesive formulation may be well suited for use as a low-cost, convenient smart window coating.

Abstract:Due to the limited adaptability of conventional adhesives that exhibit either permanently strong or reversibly weak adhesion, growing attention has been paid to switchable or programmable adhesives whose adhesion strength could be regulated on demand. Herein, we present a versatile photo-switchable pressure sensitive adhesives (S-PSA) tape platform featuring in coumarin/acrylate co-capped polyurethane prepolymers (CouPUA). Two S-PSA tapes are prepared for bonding on-demand (PSA-4) and debonding on-demand (PSA-3′) by copolymerization with acrylate monomers and CouPUA prepolymers. For bonding on-demand, the switch-on peel strength of PSA-4 is up to 10.15 N cm−1 with impressive storage stability under ambient light. Meanwhile, the peel strength could be decreased via irradiating light at 365 nm, which triggers the photodimerization of dangled coumarin moiety and therefore increases the crosslinking degree of PSA. The switch-off peel strength is low to 0.73 N cm−1. It can recover to 6.63 N cm−1 by irradiating under light at 254 nm, which activates the photocleavage of dimerized coumarin moiety. Notably, well-defined spatiotemporal control of peel strength is achieved by a synergistic strategy combining photodimerization with mask geometric design. Intriguingly, PSA-4 exhibits unexpectedly enhanced peel strength under the debonding on-demand procedure. In addition, for debonding on-demand, photodimerization-induced overcuring could still be achieved after 72 h of attachment for PSA-3′ accompanying the peel strength decreases from 4.73 to 0.97 N cm−1. These results remarkably broaden the performance scope of S-PSA and have a direct influence on the fields that require on-demand adhesion.

Abstract:AbstractIn our previous work, we reported that cationic water‐soluble pressure‐sensitive adhesives (PSAs) could be synthesized in ethanol or methanol. These cationic water‐soluble adhesives would not cause a stickies problem during paper recycling and can be easily removed from the papermaking system by adsorbing on wood fibers. In this study we report the synthesis and application of water‐based cationic PSAs using miniemulsion polymerization. A redox initiator system of cumene hydroperoxide/tetraethylenepentamine was used to force interfacial polymerization. The end‐use properties of the PSAs were evaluated, and the repulpability of the PSAs in paper recycling was studied. It was found that the cationic PSA from miniemulsion polymerization itself was insoluble and nondispersible in water during the paper recycling process. However, if this water‐insoluble cationic PSA from miniemulsion was formulated with a water‐soluble cationic PSA made from ethanol, the solubility or dispensability of the former PSA in water was improved. The molecular weight and degree of crosslinking of the PSA polymer have significant effects on the properties and dispersability of PSA. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:For polyacrylate latex pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs), high peel strength is of crucial significance. It is not only a key factor for ensuring the long-lasting and effective adhesive force of polyacrylate latex PSAs but also can significantly expand their application scope in many vital fields, such as packaging, electronics, and medical high-performance composite materials. High peel strength can guarantee that the products maintain stable and reliable adhesive performance under complex and variable environmental conditions. However, at present, the peel strength capacity of polyacrylate latex PSAs is conspicuously insufficient, making it difficult to fully meet the urgent market demand for high peel strength, and severely restricting their application in many cutting-edge fields. Therefore, based on previous experimental studies, and deeply inspired by the adhesion mechanism of natural marine mussels, in this study, a traditional polyacrylate latex PSA was ingeniously graft-modified with 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (DHBA) through the method of monomer-starved seeded semi-continuous emulsion polymerization, successfully synthesizing novel high-peel-strength polyacrylate latex pressure-sensitive adhesives (HPSAs) with outstanding strong adhesion properties, and the influence of DHBA content on the properties of the HPSAs was comprehensively studied. The research results indicated that the properties of the modified HPSAs were comprehensively enhanced. Regarding the water resistance of the adhesive film, the minimum water absorption rate was 4.33%. In terms of the heat resistance of the adhesive tape, it could withstand heat at 90 °C for 1 h without leaving residue upon tape peeling. Notably, the adhesive properties were significantly improved, and when the DHBA content reached 4.0%, the loop tack and 180° peel strength of HPSA4 significantly increased to 5.75 N and 825.4 gf/25 mm, respectively, which were 2.5 times and 2 times those of the unmodified PSA, respectively. Such superior adhesive performance of HPSAs, on the one hand, should be attributed to the introduction of the bonding functional monomer DHBA with a rich polyphenol structure; on the other hand, the acetal structure formed by the grafting reaction of DHBA with the PSA effectively enhanced the spatial network and crosslink density of the HPSAs. In summary, in this study, the natural biological adhesion phenomenon was ingeniously utilized to increase the peel strength of pressure-sensitive adhesives, providing a highly forward-looking and feasible direct strategy for the development of environmentally friendly polyacrylate latex pressure-sensitive adhesives.

Abstract:The challenge of pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) is to develop biodegradable PSAs with prominent thermal stability and considerable peel strength. To overcome this drawback, we designed and synthesized a series of 4,4 '-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI)-modified chlorosulfonated poly(propylene carbonate)s (CSPPC-MDIs) using a solvent-free method. We found that the introduction of MDI can effectively increase the molecular weight, T-g, and thermal stability, demonstrating that MDI acts as both a capping reagent and chain extender. Rheology profiles, tack test and peel test results demonstrate that CSPPC-MDIs exhibit higher adhesion properties and peel strengths than original CSPPC. Furthermore, the adhesive and cohesive properties of CSPPC-MDIs can be controlled by tuning the MDI feed ratios. The CSPPC-MDI-3.0 (the reaction product of CSPPC and 3 wt % MDI) has a prominent peel strength (9.1 +/- 0.1 N/cm) and biodegradable features compared to commercial PSAs such as 3M 810, 3M 2929, and AveryDennison 5078A, indicating that CSPPC-MDIs can be used as a better candidate for high-performance PSAs in the future.

Abstract:With the increasing use of pressure‐sensitive adhesives (PSAs) in various industries, there is a need for greater sustainability, particularly in developing polymer materials from renewable resources, as well as the reuse and recycling of materials to reduce environmental impact, reduce waste, or extend their life. Here, we outlined the required properties of PSAs which are governed by the molecular parameters (molecular weights, dispersities, molecular wight between entanglement, molecular weight between cross‐links and gel content) of polymer materials which subsequently define the physical properties (storage and loss moduli, glass transition temperature) that are required for good performance in peel, tack and shear tests. The sustainable approach discussed here is the development of degradable polymer materials featuring selectively degradable linkages in the backbone. This provides a viable alternative for the design of PSAs that could overcome the 'stickies' problem and make the recycling of glass and cardboard more efficient.

Redox-triggered debonding of mussel-inspired pressure sensitive adhesives: Improving efficiency through functional design

Abstract:Debondable pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) promise access to recyclability in microelectronics in the transition toward a circular economy. Two PSAs were synthesized from a tetravalent thiol star-polyester forming thiol-catechol-connectivities (TCC) with either biorelated DiDopa-bisquinone (BY*Q) or fossil-based bisquinone A (BQA). The PSAs enable debonding by oxidation of TCC-catechols to quinones. The extent of debonding efficiency depends on the interaction modes, which are determined by the chemical structure differences of both TCC-motifs. BY*Q-TCC-PSA debonds with exceptional loss of 99% of its approx. 2 MPa shear strength. For BQA-TCC-PSA, a debonding efficiency of only approx. 60% was found, irrespective of its initial shear strength, which could be tuned up to approx. 7 MPa. The efficiency of debonding for BY*Q-TCC-PSA after TCC-oxidation is linked to the loss of synergistic interactions without strongly affecting the bulk glue properties, outperforming the purely catechol-based BQA-analogue.

Abstract:Pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) are ubiquitous materials within a spectrum that span from office supplies to biomedical devices. Currently, the ability of PSAs to meet the needs of these diverse applications relies on trial-and-error mixing of assorted chemicals and polymers, which inherently entails property imprecision and variance over time due to component migration and leaching. Herein, we develop a precise additive-free PSA design platform that predictably leverages polymer network architecture to empower comprehensive control over adhesive performance. Utilizing the chemical universality of brush-like elastomers, we encode work of adhesion ranging 5 orders of magnitude with a single polymer chemistry by coordinating brush architectural parameters-side chain length and grafting density. Lessons from this design-by-architecture approach are essential for future implementation of AI machinery in molecular engineering of both cured and thermoplastic PSAs incorporated into everyday use.

Abstract:Despite the important roles of pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) and hot-melt adhesives (HMA) in wood furniture, aerospace, and other fields, the inherent contradiction between them owing to their different molecular mechanisms remains a great challenge in developing high-performance, multi-purpose adhesives. In this study, butylphenyl crosslinked polymers were constructed to overcome the intrinsic contradiction between PSA and HMA and to develop a multi-purpose adhesive. The formation of electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding networks between inter/intramolecular functional groups gave PSA excellent adhesive strength (3.0 MPa) and peel strength (4.7 N/cm) at light pressures of 0.3 MPa. Interestingly, PSA has the ability to achieve repeatable bonding performance at the gluing interface and excellent underwater bonding performance owing to its special crosslinked network structure consisting of long alkane chains and the synergistic effect of fillers (rosin and nano-silica). Multifunctionalities, such as heterointerfacial adhesion, rapid bonding, reuse, interfacial debonding, and container leakage repair, have been achieved.

Abstract:<h2 class="section-title u-h3 u-margin-l-top u-margin-xs-bottom">1. </h2><p>Pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) are utilized for temporary applications since bonding and debonding are determined by the adhesive-substrate interface and the mechanical and rheological properties of the PSA. Moreover, a wide variety of basic materials allows for proper adjustment of the adhesive properties (tack, peel adhesion, cohesion). Where the adjustment of the adhesive's chemical composition is not efficient enough to provide easy and clean removability in the end of the application, release functions can be incorporated into the adhesive system. The adhesive strength is reduced upon the action of external triggers such as UV-irradiation, heat, the use of electric currents or magnetic fields. Thereby, debonding may follow various mechanisms, including phase changes, chemical reactions, crosslinking and volumetric expansion. Furthermore, electrostatic attraction, polarization, shape memory effects and mechanical adhesion can be employed. This review summarizes the most important properties of PSAs and provides an overview of well-proven as well as new approaches for "debonding-on-demand" adhesive systems. In addition, the article describes proposed and already implemented applications of the presented adhesive systems in the microelectronic industry, the automotive sector and the healthcare field.</p>

Fully Bio-Based Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives with High Adhesivity Derived from Epoxidized Soybean Oil and Rosin Acid

Abstract:In this paper, as a possible alternative to conventional petroleum-based pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs), a fully bio-based PSA with tunable adhesivity was designed and prepared, and the structure–property relationship of the product was investigated in detail. Rosin acid with rigid tetradecahydrophenanthrene structure was first introduced into the carboxyl-terminated copolyester through Diels–Alder addition with acrylic acid and then melt polycondensation with sebacic acid and 1,2-propanediol, and finally cured with epoxidized soybean oil to prepare fully bio-based PSAs. The tetradecahydrophenanthrene structure considerably increased the rigidity and cross-linking density of the aliphatic polyester curing network, therefore significantly improved the cohesive energy of the PSA, making it a typical removable PSA. The bio-based PSAs exhibited a similar dynamic mechanical response to their petroleum-based PSA counterparts. The adhesive properties of the bio-based PSA were comprehensively investigated by the rolling ball method, vertical debonding method, and 180° peel test, showing largely improved initial tack, static shear adhesion, and peeling force after the introduction of acrylic rosin acid (ARA). The adhesive properties could be further tailored by adjusting the ARA content and the curing time of PSA. Double-Sided Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive Materials under Human-Centric Extreme Environments

Abstract:Maintaining the adhesion strength of flexible pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) is crucial for advanced applications, such as health monitoring. Sustainable mounting is critical for wearable sensor devices, especially under challenging surroundings such as low and high temperatures (e.g., polar regions or deserts), underwater and sweat environments (physical activity), and cyclical shear complex stresses. In this article, we consider the adhesive, mechanical, and optical properties of medical-grade double-sided PSAs by simulating extreme human-centric environments. Diverse temperature conditions, water and humidity exposures, and cyclical loads were selected and tested over long intervals, up to 28 days. We observed that high temperatures increased the shear adhesion strength due to the pore closing and expanding contact area between the adhesive layer and substrate. Conversely, low temperatures caused the adhesive layers to harden and reduce the adhesive strength. Immersion in salty and weakly acidic water and excessive humidity reduced adhesion as water interfered with the interfacial interactions. PSA films showed either adhesive or cohesive failure under extreme mechanical stresses and cyclical loading, which is also affected by the presence of various polar solvents. We demonstrated that the variable adhesive performance, mechanical properties, and optical transparency of pressure-sensitive materials can be directly related to changes in their morphologies, surface roughness, swelling state, and alternation of the mechanical contact area, helping to establish the broader rules of design for wearable human health monitoring sensors for the long-term application of wearable devices, sensors, and electrodes.

Here, we design and synthesize photoreversible copolymer of poly[dopamine methacrylamide‐co‐methoxyethyl‐acrylate‐co‐7‐(2‐methacryloyloxyethoxy)‐4‐methylcoumarin]. Due to the dynamic formation and breaking of chemical crosslinking networks within the smart adhesives, the material shows widely tunable adhesion strength from ∼150 to ∼450 kPa and long‐range reversible maneuverability under orthogonal 254 and 365 nm ultraviolet light stimulation via the coumarin dimerization and cycloreversion. Moreover, the adhesive exhibits good circulation performance and stability in an acid–base environment. It also demonstrated that the bolt can be coated with the smart adhesive material for on‐demand bonding. This design principle opens the door to the development of remotely controllable high‐performance smart underwater adhesives.

Abstract:With the development of the electronic information industry, semiconductor components and electronic devices are becoming smaller and thinner, which are easy to be damaged during processing and transportation. Pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) can temporarily fix and protect these electronic components. As PSA with adjustable peel strength can be easily removed after processing without damaging the electronic components, the research on debonding caused by external stimuli for PSA is a topic of great industrial value. Here, the thermal debonding PSAs have been prepared by incorporating liquid crystal polymers (LCP) into the acrylate PSA matrix. Firstly, the linear LCP (LLCP) blended PSA can lead to some degree of improvement in thermal debonding properties but the serious phase separation between LLCP and PSA matrix results in much lower 180 o peel strength at room temperature even than the neat PSA. Secondly, to solve the problem of compatibility, we proposed a new strategy for that semi-IPN LCP PSA system. Through this strategy, the photocurable liquid crystal monomer (LCM) could perform photocuring with PSA matrix and in-situ form semi-IPN . The decreased ratio of the second system with 20 wt% and 50 wt% LCM content could reach 94.3 % and 95.9 % respectively upon heating from 20 °C to 80 °C, both of which are much higher than that of the neat PSA system (85.4 %). What's more, the 180 o peel strength of PSA with 20 wt% LCM at room temperature is also 46.7 % higher than that of the neat PSA. Obviously, such an in-situ formed semi-IPN LCP PSA strategy has promising commercial application potential.

Abstract:Photo-crosslinkable acrylic copolymer pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) have many applications in the process of electronic industry. As the silicon wafers become thinner, PSAs need to show proper adhesion performance and better debonding characteristics. The acrylic copolymers were prepared with 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, and acrylic acid by radical solution polymerization followed by chemical modification with glycidyl methacrylate to have the photo-crosslinkable groups in the side chains. The adhesion properties of photo-crosslinked acrylic copolymer PSAs were much dependent on both the content of glycidyl methacrylate and the UV dose which played a crucial role in the extent of crosslinking. The clean debonding of PSAs from silicon wafer surface was easily obtained by effective photo-crosslinking of acrylic copolymers modified with glycidyl methacrylate into fully crosslinked networks resulting from controlling the extent of crosslink and the adhesion strength of photo-crosslinked acrylic copolymer.
