Abstract:This work demonstrates high‐resolution X‐ray reflectometry measurements with millisecond time resolution as a quantitative method for fast in situ measurements.X‐ray reflectometry (XRR) is a powerful tool for probing the structural characteristics of nanoscale films and layered structures, which is an important field of nanotechnology and is often used in semiconductor and optics manufacturing. This study introduces a novel approach for conducting quantitative high‐resolution millisecond monochromatic XRR measurements. This is an order of magnitude faster than in previously published work. Quick XRR (qXRR) enables real time and in situ monitoring of nanoscale processes such as thin film formation during spin coating. A record qXRR acquisition time of 1.4 ms is demonstrated for a static gold thin film on a silicon sample. As a second example of this novel approach, dynamic in situ measurements are performed during PMMA spin coating onto silicon wafers and fast fitting of XRR curves using machine learning is demonstrated. This investigation primarily focuses on the evolution of film structure and surface morphology, resolving for the first time with qXRR the initial film thinning via mass transport and also shedding light on later thinning via solvent evaporation. This innovative millisecond qXRR technique is of significance for in situ studies of thin film deposition. It addresses the challenge of following intrinsically fast processes, such as thin film growth of high deposition rate or spin coating. Beyond thin film growth processes, millisecond XRR has implications for resolving fast structural changes such as photostriction or diffusion processes.

Monte Carlo Simulation for Polychromatic X-ray Fluorescence Computed Tomography with Sheet-Beam Geometry

Abstract:X-ray fluorescence computed tomography based on sheet-beam can save a huge amount of time to obtain a whole set of projections using synchrotron. However, it is clearly unpractical for most biomedical research laboratories. In this paper, polychromatic X-ray fluorescence computed tomography with sheet-beam geometry is tested by Monte Carlo simulation. First, two phantoms (A and B) filled with PMMA are used to simulate imaging process through GEANT 4. Phantom A contains several GNP-loaded regions with the same size (10 mm) in height and diameter but different Au weight concentration ranging from 0.3% to 1.8%. Phantom B contains twelve GNP-loaded regions with the same Au weight concentration (1.6%) but different diameter ranging from 1mm to 9mm. Second, discretized presentation of imaging model is established to reconstruct more accurate XFCT images. Third, XFCT images of phantom A and B are reconstructed by fliter backprojection (FBP) and maximum likelihood expectation maximization (MLEM) with and without correction, respectively. Contrast to noise ratio (CNR) is calculated to evaluate all the reconstructed images. Our results show that it is feasible for sheet-beam XFCT system based on polychromatic X-ray source and the discretized imaging model can be used to reconstruct more accurate images.

Generation and use of coherent x-ray beams at future SKIF storage ring

Abstract:In 1990s, the emergence of the 3rd generation synchrotron user facilities equipped with undulator sources, stimulated pioneering works on interaction of coherent X-ray beams with matter, resulted in the development of X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) technique capable to probe nanoscale fluctuations up to kHz frequencies using dynamics of speckle pattern given by scattering of coherent X-ray beam from the sample. More recently (and highly aided by the development of modern high-throughput data analysis algorithms), coherent X-ray diffraction imaging (CXDI), also known as lensless imaging, revolutionized the field of X-ray microscopy, finally bringing users the possibility of non-destructive 2D and 3D imaging of complex structures with unprecedented −10 nm resolution. However, strict requirements to transverse coherence of X-ray probe put serious limits on further development of CXDI-based techniques at the 3rd generation facilities, where coherent flux after spatial filtering becomes unacceptably small at energies above -20 keV. At the same time, the latter was used as one of the strongest arguments of the user community for push towards construction of multibend-achromat-based 4th generation of storage rings with ultra-low emittance. Whereas at the 3rd generation facilities the phase volume of undulator source was dominated by electron beam emittance with negligible influence of other factors, the estimation and minimization of undulator source phase volume at 4 th generation facilities requires more elaborate approach taking into account electron beam energy spread and matching of phase-space ellipses between electron and X-ray beams. Here we present estimations of coherent flux at different energies available for future users of ultra-low-emittance SKIF storage ring (to be commissioned in 2023) and discuss ways of its optimization.

Abstract:Over the recent years X-ray differential phase-contrast imaging was developed for the hard X-ray regime as produced from laboratory X-ray sources. The technique uses a grating-based Talbot-Lau interferometer and was shown to yield image contrast gain, which makes it very interesting to the fields of medical imaging and non-destructive testing, respectively. In addition to X-ray attenuation contrast, the differential phase-contrast and dark-field images provide different structural information about a specimen. For the dark-field even at length scales much smaller than the spatial resolution of the imaging system. Physical interpretation of the dark-field information as present in radiographic and tomographic (CT) images requires a detailed look onto the geometric orientation between specimen and the setup. During phase-stepping the drop in intensity modulation, due to local scattering effects within the specimen is reproduced in the dark-field signal. This signal shows strong dependencies on micro-porosity and micro-fibers if these are numerous enough in the object. Since a grating-interferometer using a common unidirectional line grating is sensitive to X-ray scattering in one plane only, the dark-field image is influenced by the fiber orientations with respect to the grating bars, which can be exploited to obtain anisotropic structural information. With this contribution, we attempt to extend existing models for 2D projections to 3D data by analyzing dark-field contrast tomography of anisotropically structured materials such as carbon fiber reinforced carbon (CFRC).

A Method for Classifying Snow Using Ski-Mounted Strain Sensors

Abstract:Understanding the structure, quantity, and type of snow in mountain landscapes is crucial for assessing avalanche safety, interpreting satellite imagery, building accurate hydrology models, and choosing the right pair of skis for your weekend trip. Currently, such characteristics of snowpack are measured using a combination of remote satellite imagery, weather stations, and laborious point measurements and descriptions provided by local forecasters, guides, and backcountry users. Here, we explore how characteristics of the top layer of snowpack could be estimated while skiing using strain sensors mounted to the top surface of an alpine ski. We show that with two strain gauges and an inertial measurement unit it is feasible to correctly assign one of three qualitative labels (powder, slushy, or icy/groomed snow) to each 10 second segment of a trajectory with 97% accuracy, independent of skiing style. Our algorithm uses a combination of a data-driven linear model of the ski-snow interaction, dimensionality reduction, and a Naive Bayes classifier. Comparisons of classifier performance between strain gauges suggest that the optimal placement of strain gauges is halfway between the binding and the tip/tail of the ski, in the cambered section just before the point where the unweighted ski would touch the snow surface. The ability to classify snow, potentially in real-time, using skis opens the door to applications that range from citizen science efforts to map snow surface characteristics in the backcountry, and develop skis with automated stiffness tuning based on the snow type.

Abstract:Abstract The use of non-invasive macroscopic imaging techniques is becoming more prevalent in the field of cultural heritage, especially to avoid invasive procedures that damage valuable artworks. For this purpose, an X-ray powder diffraction scanner (MA-XRPD) capable of visualising crystalline compounds in a highly specific manner was recently developed. Many inorganic pigments present in paintings fall into this category of materials. In this study, the 17th century oil painting Girl with a Pearl Earring (c. 1665) by Johannes Vermeer was analysed with a combination of transmission and reflection mode MA-XRPD. By employing this scanner in reflection mode, the relative sensitivity for compounds that are present at the paint surface could be increased, establishing it as a highly relevant technique for investigating the degradation processes that are ongoing at paint surfaces. Many of the original pigments employed by Vermeer could be identified, along with four secondary alteration products: gypsum (CaSO 4 ·2H 2 O), anglesite (PbSO 4 ), palmierite (K 2 Pb(SO 4 ) 2 ) and weddellite (CaC 2 O 4 ·2H 2 O). The formation of gypsum was linked to the presence of chalk in the upper glaze layer while the formation of palmierite and weddellite is driven by the presence of lake pigments (and their substrates). In this manner, MA-XRPD can also be used to pinpoint locations relevant for sampling and synchrotron μ-XRPD analysis, which provides information on the microscopic make-up of the paint. A paint cross-section taken from an area rich in palmierite was analysed with synchrotron μ-XRPD, which confirmed the presence of this secondary compound at the interface of the upper paint layer with the ground layer as well as the presence of anglesite in the ground layer. The capacity of MA-XRPD to identify and chart secondary alteration products in a non-invasive manner has only very recently been demonstrated and makes it a highly relevant technique for the assessment of the chemical condition of works of art.

Abstract:Quantitative computed tomography (QCT) is a widely used tool for osteoporosis diagnosis and monitoring. The assessment of cortical markers like cortical bone mineral density (BMD) and thickness is a demanding task, mainly because of the limited spatial resolution of QCT. We propose a direct model based method to automatically identify the surface through the center of the cortex of human vertebra. We develop a statistical bone model and analyze its probability distribution after the imaging process. Using an as-rigid-as-possible deformation we find the cortical surface that maximizes the likelihood of our model given the input volume. Using the European Spine Phantom (ESP) and a high resolution \mu CT scan of a cadaveric vertebra, we show that the proposed method is able to accurately identify the real center of cortex ex-vivo. To demonstrate the in-vivo applicability of our method we use manually obtained surfaces for comparison.

Abstract:X-ray tomography is a reliable tool for determining the inner structure of 3-D object with penetrating X-rays. However, traditional reconstruction methods, such as Feldkamp-Davis-Kress (FDK), require dense angular sampling in the data acquisition phase leading to long measurement times, especially in X-ray micro-tomography to obtain high-resolution scans. Acquiring less data using greater angular steps is an obvious way for speeding up the process and avoiding the need to save huge data sets. However, computing 3-D reconstruction from such a sparsely sampled data set is difficult because the measurement data are usually contaminated by errors, and linear measurement models do not contain sufficient information to solve the problem in practice. An automatic regularization method is proposed for robust reconstruction, based on enforcing sparsity in the 3-D shearlet transform domain. The inputs of the algorithm are the projection data and a priori known expected degree of sparsity, denoted as . The number Cpr can be calibrated from a few dense-angle reconstructions and fixed. Human subchondral bone samples were tested, and morphometric parameters of the bone reconstructions were then analyzed using standard metrics. The proposed method is shown to outperform the baseline algorithm (FDK) in the case of sparsely collected data. The number of X-ray projections can be reduced up to 10% of the total amount 300 projections over 180° with uniform angular step while retaining the quality of the reconstruction images and of the morphometric parameters.

Abstract:X-ray radiography and computed tomography have become well-established methods for investigation of internal structure of objects and for defectoscopy. Recently, the methods have even been used for in-situ analysis of materials under mechanical loading. Although the techniques would be very suitable for analysis during dynamic events, their application is constrained by typical achievable frame rates. Therefore, fast imaging is usually limited to facilities providing sufficient flux like particle accelerators. In this paper, we test imaging performance of a laboratory-based setup with a high-power X-ray tube, a scintillation panel, and an optical camera. Fast-rotating object and typical specimens for impact testing are irradiated with different power settings and quality of captured images is evaluated and analyzed. It is found out that the system can be successfully used for imaging at several hundred frames per second allowing for inspection of slow impact dynamics experiments.

Little attention, however, has been directed to the effect of physical factors on helical, cone-beam CT image reconstruction. A pre-reconstruction dual-energy technique is developed to reduce beam-hardening artefacts and enhance contrast in soft tissue.

Abstract:X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) allows for the resolution of dynamic processes within a material across a wide range of length and time scales. X-ray speckle visibility spectroscopy (XSVS) is a related method that uses a single diffraction pattern to probe ultrafast dynamics. Interpretation of the XPCS and XSVS data in terms of underlying physical processes is necessary to establish the connection between the macroscopic responses and the microstructural dynamics. To aid the interpretation of the XPCS and XSVS data, we present a computational framework to model these experiments by computing the X-ray scattering intensity directly from the atomic positions obtained from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We compare the efficiency and accuracy of two alternative computational methods: the direct method computing the intensity at each diffraction vector separately, and a method based on fast Fourier transform that computes the intensities at all diffraction vectors at once. The computed X-ray speckle patterns capture the density fluctuations over a range of length and time scales and are shown to reproduce the known properties and relations of experimental XPCS and XSVS for liquids.

Separating edges from microstructure in X-ray dark-field imaging: Evolving and devolving perspectives via the X-ray Fokker-Planck equation

Abstract:A key contribution to X-ray dark-field (XDF) is X-ray diffusion by sample structures smaller than the imaging system's spatial resolution. However, some XDF techniques report that resolvable sample edges also generate XDF. Speckle-based X-ray imaging (SBXI) extracts XDF by analyzing sample-imposed changes to a reference speckle pattern's visibility. We present an algorithm for SBXI (a variant of our Multimodal Intrinsic Speckle-Tracking (MIST) algorithm) capable of separating these two distinct XDF contrast mechanisms. The algorithm uses the 'devolving' X-ray Imaging Fokker-Planck equation as its forward model and then solves the associated multimodal inverse problem, to retrieve sample attenuation, phase, and XDF. Previous MIST variants were based on the evolving Fokker-Planck equation, which considers how a reference-speckle image is modified by introducing a sample. The devolving perspective instead considers how the image collected in the presence of the sample and speckle membrane optically flows in reverse, to generate the reference-speckle image when the sample is removed from the system. We compare single- and multiple-exposure multimodal retrieval algorithms from the two Fokker-Planck perspectives. We demonstrate that the devolving perspective can distinguish between two physically different XDF contrast mechanisms; unresolved microstructure- and sharp-edge-induced XDF. This was verified by applying the retrieval algorithms to two experimental data sets. We anticipate that this work will be useful in: Yielding a pair of complementary XDF images that separate sharp-edge diffuse scatter from unresolved microstructure diffuse scatter. XDF computed tomography, where the strong edge XDF can lead to tainting streaking artefacts. Sample preparation, as samples will not need to be embedded since the strong XDF edge signal seen between the sample and air can be separated out.

Abstract:The characteristics of the X-ray focal spot strongly influence XCT image sharpness and structural resolution. However, current international standards only yield a limited characterization of the focal spot as two perpendicular sizes. Therefore, this paper presents a method for full characterization of the focal spot in terms of both 2D shape and intensity distribution, by applying the inverse Radon transform on a radiograph of a Siemens star. The method is validated through simulations and applied experimentally to two XCT sources. Subsequently, an investigation on how the X-ray tube settings influence focal spot size, shape, intensity and stability is presented.
Visualizing Skiers' Trajectories in Monocular Videos

Abstract:Trajectories are fundamental to winning in alpine skiing. Tools enabling the analysis of such curves can enhance the training activity and enrich broadcasting content. In this paper, we propose SkiTraVis, an algorithm to visualize the sequence of points traversed by a skier during its performance. SkiTraVis works on monocular videos and constitutes a pipeline of a visual tracker to model the skier's motion and of a frame correspondence module to estimate the camera's motion. The separation of the two motions enables the visualization of the trajectory according to the moving camera's perspective. We performed experiments on videos of real-world professional competitions to quantify the visualization error, the computational efficiency, as well as the applicability. Overall, the results achieved demonstrate the potential of our solution for broadcasting media enhancement and coach assistance.

A Novel Skiagraphic Method of Casting Shade of a Torus

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel skiagraphic method for shading toroidal forms in architectural illustrations, addressing the challenges of traditional techniques. Skiagraphy projects 3D objects onto 2D surfaces to display geometric properties. Traditional shading of tori involves extensive manual calculations and multiple projections, leading to high complexity and inaccuracies. The proposed method simplifies this by focusing on the elevation view, eliminating the need for multiple projections and complex math. Utilizing descriptive geometry, it reduces labor and complexity. Accuracy was validated through comparisons with SketchUp-generated shading and various torus configurations. This technique streamlines shading toroidal shapes while maintaining the artistic value of traditional illustration. Additionally, it has potential applications in 3D model generation from architectural shade casts, contributing to the evolving field of architectural visualization and representation.

Machine Learning-Assisted Analysis of Small Angle X-ray Scattering

Abstract:Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) is extensively used in materials science as a way of examining nanostructures. The analysis of experimental SAXS data involves mapping a rather simple data format to a vast amount of structural models. Despite various scientific computing tools to assist the model selection, the activity heavily relies on the SAXS analysts' experience, which is recognized as an efficiency bottleneck by the community. To cope with this decision-making problem, we develop and evaluate the open-source, Machine Learning-based tool SCAN (SCattering Ai aNalysis) to provide recommendations on model selection. SCAN exploits multiple machine learning algorithms and uses models and a simulation tool implemented in the SasView package for generating a well defined set of datasets. Our evaluation shows that SCAN delivers an overall accuracy of 95%-97%. The XGBoost Classifier has been identified as the most accurate method with a good balance between accuracy and training time. With eleven predefined structural models for common nanostructures and an easy draw-drop function to expand the number and types training models, SCAN can accelerate the SAXS data analysis workflow.

Abstract:The alpine environment with a high degree of nature protection is characterized by complete non-intervention. The processes and phenomena occurring in it are exclusively of a natural origin. Related geohazards are threatening the safety of people's movement. They arise as a result of a combination of meteorological, hydrological, and geological–morphological factors permanently operating in the country. Therefore, the prevention of fatal events is limited to monitoring and predicting changes in selected objects where we expect change. Changes in the shape and dimension, or the object's deformation, can be documented using geodetic and photogrammetric measurements. Our research focuses on monitoring a rock talus cone in High Tatras, Slovakia, at an altitude of 1700 m above sea level (ASL), created mainly due to erosion and seasonal torrential rains. To monitor changes in selected objects, we used mass non-contact methods of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), UAS photogrammetry based on the principle of structure-from-motion–multi-view stereo (SfM–MVS), and airborne laser scanning (ALS). From the selective measurement methods, spatial measurement by a total station (TS) and height measurement based on the principle of precise leveling were used in the monitoring deformation network on a stand-alone boulder. The research results so far analyze and evaluate the possibilities, limits, effectiveness, and accuracy of the measurement and data processing methods used. As a result, we propose a complex methodology for monitoring similar phenomena in alpine environments.

Abstract:Astronomical data generally consists of 2 or more high-resolution axes, e.g., X,Y position on the sky or wavelength and position-along-one-axis (long-slit spectrometer). Analyzing these multi-dimension observations requires combining 3D source models (including velocity effects), instrument models, and multi-dimensional data comparison and fitting. A prototype of such a "Beyond-XSPEC" (Noble & Nowak, 2008) system is presented here using Chandra imag- ing and dispersed HETG grating data. Techniques used include: Monte Carlo event generation, chi-squared comparison, conjugate gradient fitting adapted to the Monte Carlo characteristics, and informative visualizations at each step. These simple baby steps of progress only scratch the surface of the computational potential that is available these days for astronomical analysis.

Abstract:X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis is a widely applied technique for the quantitative analysis of thin films up to the $\mu$m scale because of its non-destructive nature and because it is easily automated. When low uncertainties of the analytical results in the few percent range are required, the non-linear secondary fluorescence effect in multi-elemental samples may complicate an otherwise straightforward quantification, since it can easily exceed a relative contribution of 20%. The conventional solution, to rely on good performing reference samples, is hindered by their low availability, especially for thin film applications. To address this challenge, we demonstrate a flexible production method of multilayered, alloyed thin films with significant secondary fluorescence contributions. We use reference-free XRF analysis to validate the reliability of the physical model for secondary fluorescence, which includes a thorough uncertainty estimation. The investigated specimens are being qualified as calibration samples for XRF or other quantitative analyses.
