Abstract:A simple and low-cost radiative cooler based on one-dimensional photonic crystal is proposed in this work, which has an average emissivity of 96% within the atmospheric transparency window (8-13μm). The ultra-broadband emissivity property is realized by constructing the strongly overlapped optical resonances with a tandem structure composed of two lossy materials while an additional lossless material is adopted as the top layer to reduce the Fresnel reflection of the whole structure. The maximum cooling power density of the fabricated radiative cooler can reach 113.0W/m2 at night. When integrated with an excellent solar reflector that can reflect 97% incident solar power, it theoretically has the maximum cooling power of 83.0 W/m2 in the case of solar irradiance up to 1000 W/m2 at noon.

Abstract:Among several materials emerged for passive radiative cooling applications, SiO2 stands out due to its stability, abundance, recyclability, and overall safety. Patterning strategies of the SiO2‐air interface are reviewed, which can enhance its emissivity within the atmospheric transparency window (8–13 μm) by engineering its photon‐polariton band, opening new prospects in many application fields where SiO2 cover layers are routinely used. In recent years, an increasing number of passive radiative cooling materials are proposed in the literature, with several examples relying on the use of silica (SiO2) due to its unique stability, non‐toxicity, and availability. Nonetheless, due to its bulk phonon‐polariton band, SiO2 presents a marked reflection peak within the atmospheric transparency window (8‐13 μm), leading to an emissivity decrease that poses a challenge to fulfilling the criteria for sub‐ambient passive radiative cooling. Thus, the latest developments in this field are devoted to the design of engineered SiO2 photonic structures, to increase the cooling potential of bulk SiO2 radiative coolers. This review seeks to identify the most effective photonic design and fabrication strategies for SiO2 radiative emitters by evaluating their cooling efficacy, as well as their scalability, providing an in‐depth analysis of the fundamental principles, structural models, and results (both numerical and experimental) of various types of SiO2 radiative coolers.

Abstract:Radiative cooling of solar cells has been proposed in recent years and has elicited much interest from fields of materials science to engineering science. Herein, a silica micro-grating photonic cooler is proposed, designed, and fabricated to radiatively cool solar cells. It is shown that the micro-grating silica can not only improve the thermal emissivity of the bulk silica to over 0.9 required for enhanced radiative cooling of solar cells but also exhibits a slight anti-reflection effect for sunlight. The outdoor experiment demonstrates that the proposed cooler can passively reduce the temperature of the commercial silicon cell by 3.6 °C when applied on the top of the cell under solar irradiance range from approximately 830 W m−2 to 990 W m−2, even though the cell already possesses a strong thermal emissivity of 0.67 and such a cooler slightly enhance the light trapping effect of the cell. This work provides an alternative way to design the solar-transparent infrared-emissive cooler for enhanced radiative cooling of solar cells and shows its cooling potential.

Iridescent Daytime Radiative Cooling with No Absorption Peaks in the Visible Range

Abstract:The designed radiative cooler consists of a bioinspired amorphous structure made of SiO2 microcones obtained by reactive ion etching of the SiO2 substrate. This iridescent radiative cooler exhibits broadband iridescent coloration due to the scattering induced by the truncated microcone array while achieving efficient solar reflection (95%) and long‐wave infrared emission (0.95) without visible absorption peaks. Coatings for passive radiative cooling applications must be highly reflected in the solar spectrum, and thus can hardly support any coloration without losing their functionality. In this work, a colorful daytime radiative cooling surface based on structural coloration is reported. A designed radiative cooler with a bioinspired array of truncated SiO2 microcones is manufactured via a self‐assembly method and reactive ion etching. Complemented with a silver reflector, the radiative cooler exhibits broadband iridescent coloration due to the scattering induced by the truncated microcone array while maintaining an average reflectance of 95% in the solar spectrum and a high thermal emissivity (ε) of 0.95, owing to the reduced impedance mismatch provided by the patterned surface at infrared wavelengths, reaching an estimated cooling power of ≈143 W m–2 at an ambient temperature of 25 °C and a measured average temperature drop of 7.1 °C under direct sunlight. This strong cooling performance is attributed to its bioinspired surface pattern, which promotes both the aesthetics and cooling capacity of the daytime radiative cooler.

Robust radiative cooling via surface phonon coupling-enhanced emissivity from SiO 2 micropillar arrays

Abstract:Silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) is a prominent candidate for radiative cooling applications due to its low absorption in solar wavelengths (0.25–2.5 μm) and exceptional stability. However, its bulk phonon-polariton band results in a strong reflection peak in the atmospheric transparency window (8–13 μm), making it difficult to meet the requirements for sub-ambient passive radiative cooling. Herein, we demonstrate that SiO 2 micropillar arrays can effectively suppress infrared reflection at 8–13 μm and enhance the infrared emissivity by optimizing the micropillar array structure. We created a pattern with a height, spacing, and diameter of approximately 1.45 μm, 0.15 μm, and 0.35 μm, respectively, on top of a bulk SiO 2 substrate using reactive ion etching. The resulting surface phonon coupling of the micropillar array led to an increase in the thermal emissivity from 0.79 to 0.94. Outdoor tests show that the SiO 2 cooler with an optimized micropillar array can generate an average temperature drop of 5.5 °C throughout the daytime underneath an irradiance of 843.1 W m −2 at noon. Furthermore, the micropillar arrays endow the SiO 2 cooler with remarkable hydrophobic properties, attributed to the formation of F/C compounds introduced during the etching process. Finally, we also replicated the micropillar pattern onto the surface of industrial optical solar reflectors (OSRs), demonstrating similar emissivity and hydrophobicity enhancements. Our findings revealed an effective strategy for modifying the thermal management features of durable SiO 2 layers, which can be harnessed to cool OSRs and other similar sky-facing devices.

Abstract:Radiative cooling has gained considerable attention recently, mainly due to its spontaneous thermodynamic process of dissipating surplus heat from the terrestrial object to deep space without any external energy. However, challenges still remain to meet better the stringent requirement on spectral selectivity for improving the current unoptimized cooling performance, especially for the multilayer-type radiative coolers. In this work, we proposed a radiative cooler with seven layers of SiO2 and Si3N4 optimized by using the evolutionary algorithm, which firstly facilitates a high reflection of solar irradiation utilizing the optical impedance mismatch, secondly enables a broadband emissivity merely within the atmospheric window by complementary phonon resonances, and thirdly suppresses the emissivity outside the atmospheric window (not only the solar spectral range). The continuous rooftop measurement and the comprehensive calculation collectively demonstrated the excellent capability of the radiative cooler, e.g., a measured temperature drop of 8 °C and a simulated cooling power of 87 W/m2 under the sunlight of ~900 W/m2. Besides, the cooling performance can be further enhanced if exposed to a dry climate due to the high humidity during the test. Our work contributes an alternative candidate to multilayered radiative coolers with cooling performance comparable to the polymer counterparts, and as well as providing a rational design approach exploiting both the structural and material aspects for similar photothermal devices.

Abstract:For passive radiative cooling applications, all-day harvested cold energy is an essential performance indicator concerning its long-term and continuous operation. To this end, high mid-infrared emissivity of emitter surface is a key parameter for steadily boosting the net cooling power regardless of the time-varying environment. In this work, hexagonal-array grating-patterned PDMS film on a silver reflector is proposed for efficient ‘all-day’ radiative cooling. The optimized grating structure achieves the weighted emissivity of 0.985 in the atmospheric transparent window with the solar reflectivity of 0.933, leading to the predicted all-day average cooling power of 85∼130 W/m2. We also show from outdoor experiments that the proposed structure can produce 4.1∼6.3 W/m2 extra all-day cooling power compared to a flat PDMS emitter. Furthermore, the grating-patterned surface introduces self-cleaning feature that is desirable for long-term usage.

Abstract:Radiative cooling is a passive cooling method that can radiate heat into the universe through transparent atmospheric windows. A good radiative cooler should possess not only a suitable emissive spectrum profile but also characteristics such as flexibility, large-area, low-cost, and angle-independency. To satisfy these demands, we propose an approach to fabricate a photonic crystal-structured UV-curable adhesive (PCSUVA) on a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate using UV nanoimprint lithography. The PCSUVA-based radiative cooler has a near-ideal emissive spectrum in the wavelength range of 0.4-25 mu m and the cooler is successful in cooling its object, no matter the object needs sunlight or not. When the PCSUVA is coated on a transparent substrate (i.e. PET), it can reduce the temperature of the underlying silicon wafer by 1.2 +/- 0.2 degrees C, and when the PCSUVA is coated on PET backed with an Ag layer, it can reduce the temperature of the underlying silicon wafer by 7.7 +/- 0.2 degrees C on a summer day. The achieved cooling effect can be attributed to the reflection of sunlight by the Ag layer and the thermal emission of the PCSUVA. The approach is cost-effective, making it a suitable candidate for a flexible, large-area, low-cost, and angle-independent radiative cooler.

Abstract:Radiative cooling is an energy-saving cooling technology and is achieved when the grating structure emits infrared radiant heat energy into outer space through an atmospheric window (8∼13μm). The radiation cooling effect is low for the simple grating structure due to its low absorptivity, thus was a novel multilayered composite grating structure proposed in the paper, an aluminum substrate composite whose top layer is polycarbonate coating and intermediate layers are composed of SrTiO2, SiO and Al2O3. The influencing factors of the absorptivity of the simple grating structure were analyzed by rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA), which consider grating period (1∼5μm), grating height (1∼20μm), duty cycle (0.75∼1) and angle of incidence (0∼75°), it was found that grating height is the crucial factor and increasing grating height can improve the absorptivity of the grating structure Hence, the proposed composite grating structure was studied with 20μm grating height and 0.5 to 2μm thickness of the polycarbonate (PC) coating, 1μm thickness polycarbonate structure was found to have good absorptivity, most is over 0.9, and the net cooling power of this grating structure could reach 71.39 W/m2 at ambient temperature.

Abstract:By designing periodic prismatic structures and porous structures on the surface of the radiative cooler, which can reflect almost all sunlight. Furthermore, the Fröhlich resonance of SiO2 at infrared wavelength, the film has a significant emissivity in the entire atmospheric transmission window (8−13 μm). This radiative cooler has great promise for practical applications in thermal management. To maintain a comfortable indoor living environment in low latitude or tropical regions, humans consume significant amounts of electrical energy in air conditioning, leading to substantial CO2 emissions. Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) allows objects to cool down during the daytime without any energy consumption by dissipating heat through the atmospheric transparency window (8−13 μm) to outer space, which has garnered significant attention. However, the practical applications of common PDRC materials are hindered by their poor optical selectivity and high‐reflective silver backing. Additionally, the availability of artificial photon emitters with complex structures and excellent performance is also limited by their high cost. Herein, a novel multilayer prismatic photonic metamaterial film without any silver reflector, easily scalable and produced by a roll‐to‐roll method is demonstrated, which exhibits ≈96.4% sunlight reflectance (0.3−2.5 μm) and ≈97.2% emissivity in mid‐infrared (IR) (8−13 μm). At an average solar intensity of ≈920 W m−2, it is on average 6.8 °C below ambient temperature during the day and theoretically yields a radiative cooling power of 88.9 W m−2. Furthermore, the film exhibits excellent hydrophobicity, superior flexibility, and robust mechanical strength, providing an attractive and viable pathway for practical applications addressing the pressing challenges of climate and energy issues.

Abstract:We propose in this article a method to generate radiative coolers which are reflective in the solar spectrum and emissive in the transparency window of the atmosphere (8-13 $\mu$m). We choose an approach combining thermal control capacity of gratings and multi-layers. We use optimized BN, SiC and SiO 2 gratings, which have emissivity peak in the transparency window. We place under these gratings a metal/dielectric multi-layer structure to obtain a near perfect reflectivity in the solar spectrum and to enhance the emissivity in the transparency window. The optimized structures produce a good radiative cooling power density up to 80 W.m --2 .

Abstract:Radiative cooling is a passive cooling strategy that can radiate heat to outer space through the 8 to 13 mu m waveband (atmospheric window) and is now widely used for buildings, wearable fabric, solar cells, and electronic devices. Daytime radiative cooling requires both high reflection in the solar spectrum and high absorption/emission in the 8 to 13 mu m range. Previous multilayered structures were optimized by changing the thickness ratio of the layers, but the optical properties of multilayer thin films, such as absorptivity, transmissivity, and reflectivity, are determined by complex factors. In this work, several initial multilayer structures were selected and then the thickness of each layer was globally optimized; the theoretically smallest thickness with the best absorption performance was achieved in the 8 to 13 mu m range, which significantly improved the cooling performance and reduced costs. We developed an optimized SiO2-Ta2O5 alternating multilayer photonic radiative cooling thin film and fabricated it using ion source assisted electron beam evaporation with an average emissivity of 0.876 within the 8 to 13 mu m range and an average reflectivity of 0.963 in the 0.3 to 2.5 mu m waveband; it achieved an average temperature reduction of 20.1 degrees C lower than the uncoated substrate and 3.2 degrees C lower than the ambient temperature under direct sunlight with an average solar power of 859.3 W/m(2).

Abstract:Passive radiative cooling holds significant potential for efficiently cooling terrestrial objects by simultaneously reflecting sunlight and radiating heat to the cold outer space. Numerous studies have designed high-performance radiative cooling structures using polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) due to its inherent extinction coefficient.However, obtaining highly favorable spectral characteristics for reflecting sunlight using PMMA, often done through the fabrication of micro/nanoscale structures, remains a central barrier for widespread application. Herein, we report a facile, economical, and scalable multistage solvent displacement-based method for fabricating hierarchically gradient porous PMMA metafilms with highly efficient daytime and nighttime passive radiative cooling performance. Here, the “ouzo effect” works as the driving force for micro/nanopore formation by solvent displacement, which also controls the size of the pores based on different solution ratios. The PMMA metafilm features an ultrahigh solar reflectance of 0.99 and superior mid-infrared thermal emittance of 0.97, which allows for the average and peak subambient temperature drops of 4.6 °C and 8.2 °C, respectively, along with an average radiative cooling power of 90 W/m2 during a 24-h uninterrupted thermal measurement. The hierarchically gradient micro/nanopore distribution of the PMMA metafilm significantly enhances the solar reflectance and thermal emittance within the atmospheric transparency window. Moreover,the multistage solvent displacement method is highly versatile and promising for fabricating porous structures, further offering a cost-efficient, eco-friendly, and sustainable manufacturing path for high-performance radiative cooling application.

Abstract:Radiative cooling is a passive cooling technology that can cool a space without any external energy by reflecting sunlight and radiating heat to the universe. Current reported radiative cooling techniques can present good outside test results, however, manufacturing an efficient radiative material which can be applied to the market for large-scale application is still a huge challenge. Here, an effective radiative cooling coating with a near-ideal selective emissive spectrum is prepared based on the molecular vibrations of SiOx, mica, rare earth silicate, and molybdate functional nanoparticles. The radiative cooling coating can theoretically cool 45 °C below the ambient temperature in the nighttime. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) aluminized film was selected as the coating substrate for its flexibility, low cost, and extensive production. As opposed to the usual investigations that measure the substrate temperature, the radiative cooling coating was made into a cubic box to test its space cooling performance on a rooftop. Results showed that a temperature reduction of 4 ± 0.5 °C was obtained in the nighttime and 1 ± 0.2 °C was achieved in the daytime. Furthermore, the radiative cooling coating is resistant to weathering, fouling, and ultraviolet radiation, and is capable of self-cleaning due to its hydrophobicity. This practical coating may have a significant impact on global energy consumption.

Abstract:Radiative cooling, which cools an object below its surrounding temperature without any energy consumption, is one of the most promising techniques for zero-energy systems. In principle, the radiative cooling technique reflects incident solar energy and emits its thermal radiation energy into outer space. To achieve maximized cooling performance, it is crucial to attain high spectral reflectance in the solar spectrum (0.3-2.5 μm) and high spectral emittance in the atmospheric window (8-13 μm). Despite the development of various radiative cooling techniques such as photonic crystals and metamaterials, applying the cooling technology in practical applications remains challenging due to its low flexibility and complicated manufacturing processes. Here, we develop a high-performance radiative cooling film using PDMS/TiO2 microparticles. Specifically, the design parameters such as microparticle diameter, microparticle volume fraction, and film thickness are considered through optical analysis. Additionally, we propose a novel fabrication process using low viscosity silicone oil for practical fabrication. The fabricated film accomplishes 67.1 W/m2 of cooling power, and we also analyze the cooling performance difference depending on the fabrication process based on the measurement and optical calculation results.
A transparent radiative cooling photonic structure with a high NIR reflection

Abstract:Buildings or vehicles with transparent envelope can be heated up by sunlight, causing energy consumption for cooling and in extreme cases leading to vehicular heatstroke in a hot climate. Because only visible light for illumination is essential for these applications, the NIR solar radiation should be reflected to reduce heat gain and the infrared radiation emission should be enhanced for further cooling by using the sky as a heat sink. With a high NIR reflection, a transparent radiative cooling photonic structure consisting of 2D silica gratings atop ZnO/Ag/ZnO is demonstrated for energy-saving and safety. With 81% visible light transmitted, 57% NIR solar radiation reflected and 90% thermal infrared radiation emitted, a synthetical cooling is realized by the photonic structure. Theoretically, the total power of reflected solar irradiance and radiative cooling in infrared of this structure is more than double that of a planar silica. The field test shows that with this structure, the temperature rise of a sealed chamber covered by planar silica can be cooled down by 53.7%. This work shows that the concept of daytime radiative cooling can be applied in combination with the utilization of visible light, indicating a great practical application.

Abstract:Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) as a zero-energy consumption cooling method has broad application potential. Common commercial crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cell arrays suffer working efficiency loss due to the incident light loss and overheating. In this work, a radiative cooler with PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) film and embedded SiO2 microparticles was proposed to use in silicon solar cells. Both anti-reflection and radiative cooling performance can be improved through numerical parametric study. For the best performing of PDMS/SiO2 radiative cooler, the thickness of PDMS layer, volume fraction and radius of the embedded SiO2 particles have been determined as 55 µm, 8% and 500 nm, respectively. 94% of emissivity in first atmospheric window band (8-13 µm) for radiative cooling and 93.4% of solar transmittance at the crystalline silicon absorption band (0.3-1.1 µm) were achieved. We estimated that the PDMS/SiO2 radiative cooler can lower the temperature of a bare c-Si solar cell by 9.5°C, which can avoid 4.28% of efficiency loss. More incident light can enter and be utilized by silicon layer to enhance the efficiency of the solar cells. The proposed difunctional radiative cooling coating may become guidance for next generation encapsulation of crystalline silicon solar cells.

Abstract:Abstract Radiative cooling is a promising passive cooling technology that reflects sunlight and emits heat to deep space without any energy consumption. Current research mainly focuses on cooling non‐heat‐generating objects (e.g., water) to a deep subambient temperature under sunlight. Toward real‐world applications, however, cooling outdoor objects that generate tremendous heat and have a temperature higher than ambient (e.g., communication base stations and data centres) remains a challenge. Herein, a scalable photonic film is prepared by introducing 2D dielectric nanoplates with high backward scattering efficiency into a polymer using a simulation aided thermo‐optical design. It is demonstrated that the dielectric nanoplates can break the trade‐off between optical reflection and thermal dissipation of conventional radiative coolers. The photonic film exhibits superior solar reflectance (98%) and has a stronger heat dissipation ability compared to the matrix. It exhibits ≈4 °C subambient cooling performance under direct sunlight and ≈9 °C cooling performance at night. Moreover, it also demonstrates remarkable above‐ambient cooling performance by reducing the underlying heater temperature of ≈18 °C in comparison with traditional polymers under sunlight. The dielectric nanoplates reported here provide an innovative strategy for applications related to light management beyond subambient and above‐ambient radiative cooling.

Abstract:Passive Radiative cooling as a no energy consumption cooling method has been turned out to be a broad application potential. Common commercial crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cell arrays suffer working efficiency loss due to incident light loss and heating, which were attractive to wide research. In this work, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mixed with silica particles difunctional radiative cooler used for crystalline silicon solar cell is proposed. It takes place of glass encapsulant cover efficiently realized both high performance antireflective and radiative cooling. Through theoretical calculations, designed radiative cooler exhibited 94% of emissivity in radiative cooling wave band and 93.4% of transmittance in crystalline silicon solar responding wavelengths. The radiative cooler effect leads to a significant temperature decrease of a bare c-Si solar cell. A 9.5C decline is achieved and a 4.28% of operating efficiency loss was avoid. The design thought of high-quality solar cell radiative cooler in this work may have great application potential in the future.

Abstract:Passive radiative cooling is a method to dissipate excess heat from a material by the spontaneous emission of infrared thermal radiation. For a solar cell, the challenge is to enhance PRC while retaining transparency for sunlight above the bandgap. Here, we design a hexagonal array of cylinders etched into the top surface of silica solar module glass to enhance passive radiative cooling. Multipolar Mie-like resonances in the cylinders are shown to cause antireflection effects in the infrared, which results in enhanced infrared emissivity. Using Fourier transform infrared spectrometry we measure the hemispherical reflectance of the fabricated structures and find the emissivity of the silica cylinder array in good correspondence with the simulated results. The microcylinder array increases the average emissivity between λ = 7.5-16 μm from 84.3% to 97.7%, without reducing visible light transmission.
