Abstract:Each year at the annual meeting of the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG), addresses are given in honor of the Society and several award winners. A summary of each of these is provided below. In 2023, ASHG renamed several of its awards; the historical names are provided below for context. On the following pages, we have printed the Presidential Address as well as the addresses for the Lifetime Achievement, Scientific Achievement, and Leadership awards. Abstract:At the upcoming 2024 ASHG meeting in November we will recognize two winners of the AJHG Award for Outstanding Trainee Publication. The award was initiated in 2001, and until last year when ASHG discontinued the use of proper names for its awards, it was called the "Cotterman Award," named for C.W. Cotterman, the first AJHG editor-in-chief. I'd like to use this opportunity to provide some background about the process whereby the awardees are identified and the significance of the award.

Abstract:A year has passed since we were given the responsibility of leading Diabetes Care . In 2023, perhaps the most momentous highlight for all of us from a health perspective has been the sense that we are on the better side of recovery from the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This realization is in part due to the rapid application of technology that allowed for the development of mRNA vaccines for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). These vaccines have saved many lives and appropriately resulted in the awarding of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman.

Abstract:Dr. Geraldine McGinty is no stranger to both political accolades and medical honors. As an internationally recognized expert in health economics and an advocate for patient centered care, Dr. McGinty has gained global impact as an influential decision maker and leading figure in radiology and imaging informatics. In May 2018, McGinty became the first woman chair of the American College of Radiology(ACR), and in 2020 became the 97th ACR President (ACR, n.d.). 1 During her tenure, she spearheaded numerous initiatives from data science to health equity. In addition, she advocated for new governance structures to further the organization's mission of "empowering the radiologists of the future". 2 This year, we have the honor of highlighting her accomplishments and outlook towards the field's future as the 2024 American College of Radiology Gold Medal recipient– only the 15th female in over 100 years of ACR history to receive this most prestigious award.

Abstract:Abstract Cross-national comparisons in aging research allow for the triangulation of evidence on health outcomes across diverse populations and contexts. They allow researchers to identify policy-relevant and context-specific modifiers of health risks faced by older adults. Catalyzing cross-national comparison studies is a challenge, as researchers need to carefully consider social, cultural, political, socioeconomic differences across populations and make sure that local partners are appropriately represented and involved. This presentation will describe experiences in building a research career focused on understanding healthy cognitive aging from a global perspective, using data from diverse high-, middle-, and low-income settings. Opportunities, challenges, and strategies for early career researchers interested in catalyzing cross-national aging research will be discussed. These include the importance of advocacy for research on aging in contexts outside of the United States, theoretical and methodological approaches to cross-national research, and building diverse interdisciplinary collaborations.

Abstract:Nancy Flournoy was born in Long Beach, California, on May 4, 1947. After graduating from Polytechnic School in Pasadena in 1965, she earned a B.S. (1969) and M.S. (1971) in biostatistics from UCLA. Between her bachelors and masters degrees, she worked as a Statistician I for Regional Medical Programs at UCLA. After receiving her master's degree, she spend three years at the Southwest Laboratory for Education Research and Development in Seal Beach, California. Flournoy joined the Seattle team pioneering bone marrow transplantation in 1973. She moved with the transplant team into the newly formed Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in 1975 as Director of Clinical Statistics, where she supervised a group responsible for the design and analysis of about 80 simultaneous clinical trials. To support the Clinical Division, she supervised the development of an interdisciplinary shared data software system. She recruited Leonard B. Hearne to create this database management system in 1975 (and married him in 1978). While at the Cancer Center, she was also at the University of Washington, where she received her doctorate in biomathematics in 1982. She became the first female director of the program in statistics at the National Science Foundation (NSF) in 1986. She received service awards from the NSF in 1988 and the National Institute of Statistical Science in 2006 for facilitating interdisciplinary research. Flournoy joined the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at American University in 1988. She moved as department chair to the University of Missouri in 2002, where she became Curators' Distinguished Professor in 2012.

Abstract:Physicians generally underestimate their potential to influence social progress, despite substantial precedents for medical professionals leading important societal transformations. The author believes that our times require we challenge the notion that physicians have limited influence beyond clinical settings. Our voice is powerful and important. It needs to be heard. In light of these considerations, the author chose "What Matters" as the theme of the 2024 American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) Annual Scientific Meeting held in Chicago on May 3-6. The topic was reflective of his personal conviction that physicians, by virtue of the public respect and goodwill maintained through their dedication to the art and science of medicine, possess unparalleled potential to enhance both individual and societal health and well-being. The 2024 AANS scientific program committee determined to create an unprecedented program that would allow the community of neurosurgery to engage with some of the greatest minds in American medicine, academics, journalism, technology and public life. All contributors were invited to weave their insights regarding what truly matters into a broad, thought-provoking intellectual and spiritual tapestry. Universally resonant themes such as empathy, innovation, resilience, leadership, value, trust and equity framed the cooperative dialogues, emphasizing our shared humanity and the core values uniting us-despite our differences. The objectives for the 2024 Annual Meeting were ambitious: to consider as a professional community themes of utmost importance to our professional and personal lives; to catalyze a profound reevaluation of our collective objectives; to envision an expanded common mission; and to inspire visionary leaders to collaborate on creating lasting value-both for the patients who are the principal focus of our shared devotion, and for society writ large.

Abstract:Research increasingly relies on interrogating large-scale data resources. The NIH National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute developed the NHLBI BioData CatalystⓇ (BDC), a community-driven ecosystem where researchers, including bench and clinical scientists, statisticians, and algorithm developers, find, access, share, store, and compute on large-scale datasets. This ecosystem provides secure, cloud-based workspaces, user authentication and authorization, search, tools and workflows, applications, and new innovative features to address community needs, including exploratory data analysis, genomic and imaging tools, tools for reproducibility, and improved interoperability with other NIH data science platforms. BDC offers straightforward access to large-scale datasets and computational resources that support precision medicine for heart, lung, blood, and sleep conditions, leveraging separately developed and managed platforms to maximize flexibility based on researcher needs, expertise, and backgrounds. Through the NHLBI BioData Catalyst Fellows Program, BDC facilitates scientific discoveries and technological advances. BDC also facilitated accelerated research on the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

Kuakini Hhp Center For Translational Research On Aging: Latest Findings From Mice To Humans

Abstract:Kuakini Medical Center (Kuakini) was funded by NIH in late 2019 to create an interdisciplinary Hawai'i-based, Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE), for translational research on aging. This Center is building upon Kuakini's five-decades of prior NIH-funded research. These resources include clinical data from the 57-year ongoing Kuakini Honolulu Heart Program (HHP), Honolulu-Asia Aging Study, HHP Offspring Study and a large biorepository. The Center's overarching aim is to increase infrastructure for collaborative aging research in Hawaii. The first step is to grow the Center's faculty by hiring and mentoring research project leaders (RPLs) from diverse disciplines to become independent, R01-funded, investigators on aging. Our first RPL has graduated after obtaining R01-funded status. His project utilizes novel CRISPR methods to i) improve the safety and efficacy of delivering potentially therapeutic genes (such as FOXO3) to the mouse genome, and ii) test whether temporal enhancement of FOXO3 expression improves healthy aging in this mouse model - both key steps for potential translation to human clinical therapies. This work will be highlighted in the Program Overview session followed by current RPL findings. The first of these current RPL talks presents data on a potential relation between the FOXO3 gene and vascular dementia in elderly Japanese-American males. The second talk reports on how strong social networks mitigate risk for dementia in elderly Japanese-American males. The third talk will report a relation between FOXO3-associated resilience to hypertension and lower intracerebral hemorrhagic stroke risk in elderly Japanese-American males.
