Abstract:Common polymeric conductive electrodes, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) coated with indium tin oxide, face a major challenge due to their low processing-temperature limits, attributed to PET's low glass transition temperature (Tg) of (70-80 degrees C). This limitation significantly narrows the scope of material selection, limits the processing techniques applicable to the low Tg, and hinders the ripened technology transfer from glass substrates to them. Addressing the temperature constraints of the flexible substrates is impactful yet underexplored, with broader implications for fields beyond photovoltaics. Here, a new thermal radiation annealing methodology is introduced to address this issue. By applying the above Tg radiation annealing in conjunction with thermoelectric cooling, highly ordered molecular packing on PET substrates is successfully created, which is exclusively unachievable due to PET's low thermal tolerance. As a result, in the context of perovskite solar cells, this approach enables the circumvention of high-temperature annealing limitations of PET substrates, leading to a remarkable flexible device efficiency of 22.61% and a record fill factor of 83.42%. This approach proves especially advantageous for advancing the field of flexible optoelectronic devices. The high-thermal tolerance flexible perovskite solar cells with excellent mechanical stability are successfully achieved by a new thermal radiation annealing methodology, which aids in the vertical growth of perovskite grains, reduction of grain boundaries, and decrease of lattice mismatch. Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have exhibited great progress in recent years, although it still remains challenging to translate them from the lab to the fab for commercialization. Further process simplification and design of stable ink formulations are required to ensure fine control over the perovskite film quality for scalable coating. In this work, a facile and controllable room-temperature fabrication of high-performance bladed PSCs in air is proposed by directly introducing the green solvent methylammonium acetate (MAAc) into low-toxicity 2-methoxyethanol (2-Me). This combination could better control the formation process of perovskite by forming the perovskite-like intermediate phase with PbI2 in its unique ionic network so as to facilitate the film uniformity and the process reproducibility; meanwhile, the high volatility of 2-Me still enables the low-temperature fabrication. Consequently, with the assistance of a benzohydrazide (BZH) passivator, the target device achieves a champion PCE of 20.11% and a superior fill factor of 82.8% in inverted MAPbI(3)-based devices, along with significant device stability. Herein, the strategy provides a feasible prospect for scalable coating to fabricating high-performance PSCs with high reproducibility and controllability under ambient conditions.

Abstract:Controlling the temporal window of processing is vital for optimizing the nucleation and crystal-growth. This is not only crucial to ensure a high-quality film for module application, but also important to the general compatibility of various deposition techniques. So far, controlling the crystallization either in an ultrafast (<10 s) or relatively slower (≫100 s) process has been reported in two major precursor ink systems, while a temporal gap (from 10 to 100 s) remains where multiple deposition techniques such as spin-coating would need to deliver an optimized larger-area film. Here we report a paradigm ink using high donor number (DN) solvent such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as additive to a volatile non-coordinative solvent system, where the lone electron pair at the sulfinyl group could bond with the perovskite intermediate in the precursor ink. This bonding along with the low vapor pressure of DMSO decelerates the supersaturation rate, eventually leading to a finely controllable solidification process from seconds to hundreds of seconds. As a result, using this ink we obtained a 15 cm2 minimodule with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.12%, and an ultra-small area-dependent efficiency drop (ADED) of -0.12 % cm-2 (vs. -1.30 % cm-2 of reference ink).

Abstract:Novel photovoltaic technologies such as perovskites hold the promise of a reduced levelized cost of electricity, but the low-cost potential depends on the ability to scale-up solution-based deposition. So far, complex fluid dynamics have limited the solution deposition of uniform pinhole-free organic–inorganic perovskite thin films over large areas. Here, we show that very small amounts (tens of parts per million) of surfactants (for example, l-α-Phosphatidylcholine) dramatically alter the fluid drying dynamics and increase the adhesion of the perovskite ink to the underlying non-wetting charge transport layer. The additives enable blading of smooth perovskite films at a coating rate of 180 m h–1 with root-mean-square roughness of 14.5 nm over 1 cm. The surfactants also passivate charge traps, resulting in efficiencies over 20% for small-area solar cells. Fast blading in air of perovskite films results in stabilized module efficiencies of 15.3% and 14.6% measured at aperture areas of 33.0 cm2 and 57.2 cm2, respectively.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells have made tremendous progress using laboratory-scale spin-coating methods in the past few years owing to advances in controls of perovskite film deposition. However, devices made via scalable methods are still lagging behind state-of-the-art spin-coated devices because of the complicated nature of perovskite crystallization from a precursor state. Here we demonstrate a chlorine-containing methylammonium lead iodide precursor formulation along with solvent tuning to enable a wide precursor-processing window (up to ∼8 min) and a rapid grain growth rate (as short as ∼1 min). Coupled with antisolvent extraction, this precursor ink delivers high-quality perovskite films with large-scale uniformity. The ink can be used by both spin-coating and blade-coating methods with indistinguishable film morphology and device performance. Using a blade-coated absorber, devices with 0.12-cm2 and 1.2-cm2 areas yield average efficiencies of 18.55% and 17.33%, respectively. We further demonstrate a 12.6-cm2 four-cell module (88% geometric fill factor) with 13.3% stabilized active-area efficiency output.

Abstract:Eco-friendly printing is important for mass manufacturing of thin-film photovoltaic (PV) devices to preserve human safety and the environment and to reduce energy consumption and capital expense. However, it is challenging for perovskite PVs due to the lack of eco-friendly solvents for ambient fast printing. In this study, we demonstrate for the first time an eco-friendly printing concept for high-performance perovskite solar cells. Both the perovskite and charge transport layers were fabricated from eco-friendly solvents via scalable fast blade coating under ambient conditions. The perovskite dynamic crystallization during blade coating investigated using in situ grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) reveals a long sol-gel window prior to phase transformation and a strong interaction between the precursors and the eco-friendly solvents. The insights enable the achievement of high quality coatings for both the perovskite and charge transport layers by controlling film formation during scalable coating. The excellent optoelectronic properties of these coatings translate to a power conversion efficiency of 18.26% for eco-friendly printed solar cells, which is on par with the conventional devices fabricated via spin coating from toxic solvents under inert atmosphere. The eco-friendly printing paradigm presented in this work paves the way for future green and high-throughput fabrication on an industrial scale for perovskite PVs.

Abstract:Over the last decade, remarkable progress has been made in metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs), which have been a focus of emerging photovoltaic techniques and show great potential for commercialization. However, the upscaling of small-area PSCs to large-area solar modules to meet the demands of practical applications remains a significant challenge. The scalable production of high-quality perovskite films by a simple, reproducible process is crucial for resolving this issue. Furthermore, the crystallization behavior in the solution-processed fabrication of perovskite films can be strongly influenced by the physicochemical properties of the precursor inks, which are significantly affected by the employed solvents and their interactions with the solutes. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of solvent engineering for fabricating perovskite films over large areas is urgently required. In this paper, we first analyze the role of solvents in the solution-processed fabrication of large-area perovskite films based on the classical crystal nucleation and growth mechanism. Recent efforts in solvent engineering to improve the quality of perovskite films for solar modules are discussed. Finally, the basic principles and future challenges of solvent system design for scalable fabrication of high-quality perovskite films for efficient solar modules are proposed.

Abstract:With amazing progress in the state-of-the-art perovskite solar cells (PSCs) fabricated by laboratory-scale spin-coating methods, upscaling the PSCs via printing friendly techniques is becoming more and more important toward the future deployment of large-scale and stable perovskite modules. Here, we demonstrate the room-temperature meniscus coating of high-quality perovskite films incorporated with a multifunctional sulfobetaine-based zwitterionic surfactant. Systematic <em>in situ</em> studies uncover the perovskite crystallization pathway and emphasize the surfactant's synergistic role in film construction, crystallization kinetics modulation, defect passivation, and moisture barrier protection. This strategy is applicable across perovskite compositions and device architectures with the enhanced power conversion efficiencies up to 22%. Upscaling the device area to 0.8 cm <sup>2</sup> has negligible deterioration in the performance. This represents one of the highest records for the upscaling coated PSCs, not limited in room-temperature coated PSCs. In addition, this approach significantly improves the stability of perovskite films and devices under different aging conditions.

Abstract:The solvation capacity of dispersion solvents plays a crucial role in the solution processing of metal halide perovskites. For instance, N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), a widely used dispersion solvent, possesses high solvation capacity but often generates suboptimal film quality due to slow crystallization kinetics. We propose using low-solvation binary cosolvents (nitrile- and ether-type solvents) to achieve a balance between solvation (i.e., sufficient solubility of precursors) and desolvation (i.e., rapid crystallization of films) processes during perovskite synthesis. The polarity and hydrogen-bonding property of these cosolvents synergistically enhance their solvation capacity, facilitating perovskite precursor dissolution. Moreover, the low-solvation cosolvents accelerate the crystallization of well-defined intermediate films, yielding higher-quality perovskites than those synthesized with DMF. The optimized modules achieved an active-area efficiency of 22.27%, with a certified aperture-area efficiency of 16.10% and corresponding active-area efficiency of 20.75%. This research on solvation regulation provides universal guidelines for innovatively preparing high-quality halide perovskites.

Abstract:The scalable production of high-quality perovskite thin films is pivotal for the industrialization of perovskite thin film solar cells. Consequently, the solvent system employed for the fabrication of large-area perovskite films via coating processes has attracted significant attention. In this study, a solvent system utilizing a volatile solvent as the primary reagent has been developed to facilitate the rapid nucleation of volatile compounds. While adding the liquid Lewis base dimethylformamide (DMF) can help to improve the microstructure of perovskite films, its slow volatilization renders the crystal growth process uncontrollable. Based on the solvent system containing DMF and ethanol (EtOH), introducing a small amount of NH4Cl increases the proportion of the intermediate phase in the precursor films. This not only results in a controllable growth process for the perovskite crystals but also contributes to the improvement of the film microstructure. Under the simulated illumination (AM1.5, 1000 W/m2), the photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of the inverted solar cells has been improved to 20.12%. Furthermore, after 500 hours of continuous illumination, the photovoltaic device can retain 95.6 % of the initial, indicating that the solvent system is suitable for the scalable fabrication of high-quality FAPbI3 thin films.

Abstract:The perovskite precursor chemistry is tailored via solvent engineering, which facilitates homogeneous, nucleation, and rapid crystallization of perovskite films in ambient air without necessity of thermal annealing. The room‐temperature processed, blade‐coated perovskite solar cells deliver a champion efficiency of 19.16% with negligible hysteresis, improved reproducibility, and extended lifespan. The perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are promising for commercialization and practical application. However, high‐quality perovskite films are normally fabricated in inert gas‐filled glovebox, followed by thermal annealing, which is energy‐consuming and thus not cost‐effective. In this study, a simple manufacturing strategy is demonstrated to fabricate the highly‐crystalline perovskite films in ambient air (a relative humidity of over ≈50%) at room temperature via blade‐coating without the subsequent thermal–annealing. The perovskite precursor chemistry is tailored by solvent engineering via employing 2‐methoxyethanol, which can strongly coordinate with ammonium halide species, thus forming highly uniform small‐sized colloids and facilitating the homogeneous nucleation and rapid crystallization of perovskite films even at room temperature. The resultant PSCs fabricated with ambient‐processed, annealing‐free MAPbI3 perovskite films exhibit a champion efficiency up to 19.16% with negligible hysteresis and improved reproducibility, which is on par with the high‐temperature annealed counterparts fabricated in N2, and represented one of the highest reported efficiencies for the room‐temperature processed PSCs in ambient air. The unencapsulated devices show extended lifespan over 1000 h with nearly no efficiency loss.

Abstract:Abstract Presynthesized perovskite quantum dots are very promising for making films with different compositions, as they decouple crystallization and film-formation processes. However, fabricating large-area uniform films using perovskite quantum dots is still very challenging due to the complex fluidic dynamics of the solvents. Here, we report a robust film-formation approach using an environmental-friendly binary-solvent strategy. Nonbenzene solvents, n-octane and n-hexane, are mixed to manipulate the fluidic and evaporation dynamics of the perovskite quantum dot inks, resulting in balanced Marangoni flow, enhanced ink spreadability, and uniform solute-redistribution. We can therefore blade-coat large-area uniform perovskite films with different compositions using the same fabrication parameters. White and red perovskite light-emitting diodes incorporating blade-coated films exhibit a decent external quantum efficiency of 10.6% and 15.3% (0.04 cm 2 ), and show a uniform emission up to 28 cm 2 . This work represents a significant step toward the application of perovskite light-emitting diodes in flat panel solid-state lighting.

Abstract:The non‐uniform distribution of colloidal particles in perovskite precursor results in an imbalanced response to the shear force during flexible printing process. Herein, we have observed that the continuous disordered migration occurring in perovskite inks significantly contributes to the enlargement of colloidal particles size and diminishes the crystallization activity of the inks. Therefore, we have devised a molecular encapsulation architecture by glycerol monostearate (GMS) to mitigate colloidal particles collisions in the precursor ink, while simultaneously homogenizing the size distribution of perovskite colloids to minimize their diffusion disparities. The utilization of colloidal particles with a molecular encapsulation structure enables the achievement of uniform deposition during the printing process, thereby effectively balancing the crystallization rate and phase transition in the film and facilitating homogeneous crystallization of perovskite films. The large‐area flexible perovskite device (1.01 cm2 and 100 cm2) fabricated through printing processes, achieved an efficiency of 24.45% and 15.87%, respectively, and manifest superior environmental stability, maintained an initial efficiency of 91% after being stored in atmospheric ambiences for 150 days (unencapsulated). This work demonstrates that the dynamics evolution process of colloidal particles in both the precursor ink and printing process represents a crucial stride towards achieving uniform crystallization of perovskite films. Abstract:Despite the great success of perovskite photovoltaics in terms of device efficiency and stability using laboratory-scale spin-coating methods, the demand for high-throughput and cost-effective solutions remains unresolved and rarely reported because of the complicated nature of perovskite crystallization. In this work, we propose a stable precursor ink design strategy to control the solvent volatilization and perovskite crystallization to enable the wide speed window printing (0.3 to 18.0 m/min) of phase-pure FAPbI3 perovskite solar cells (pero-SCs) in ambient atmosphere. The FAPbI3 perovskite precursor ink uses volatile acetonitrile (ACN) as the main solvent with DMF and DMSO as coordination additives is beneficial to improve the ink stability, inhibit the coffee rings, and the complicated intermediate FAPbI3 phases, delivering high-quality pin-hole free and phase-pure FAPbI3 perovskite films with large-scale uniformity. Ultimately, small-area FAPbI3 pero-SCs (0.062 cm2 ) and large-area modules (15.64 cm2 ) achieved remarkable efficiencies of 24.32 % and 21.90 %, respectively, whereas the PCE of the devices can be maintained at 23.76 % when the printing speed increases to 18.0 m/min. Specifically, the unencapsulated device exhibits superior operational stability with T90 >1350 h. This work represents a step towards the scalable, cost-effective manufacturing of perovskite photovoltaics with both high performance and high throughput.

Abstract:Evening out the heat The conversion of precursors into the active layer of perovskite solar cells normally occurs by heating the underlying substrate. Conversion tends to occur near the top of the film, where solvent is lost, and unwanted preheating of reactants occurs near the substrate before the reaction. Li et al . show that the use of a surrounding heat transfer oil (anisole) leads to more rapid and even heating, removes solvent, and avoids air and water contamination effects. The larger grains and more uniform films led a much greater retention of efficiency in moving from small-area to large-area devices. —PDS

Abstract:Perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells hold great promise for realizing high power conversion efficiency at low cost. However, achieving scalable fabrication of wide-bandgap perovskite (similar to 1.68 eV) in air, without the protective environment of an inert atmosphere, remains challenging due to moisture-induced degradation of perovskite films. Herein, this study reveals that the extent of moisture interference is significantly influenced by the properties of solvent. We further demonstrate that n-Butanol (nBA), with its low polarity and moderate volatilization rate, not only mitigates the detrimental effects of moisture in air during scalable fabrication but also enhances the uniformity of perovskite films. This approach enables us to achieve an impressive efficiency of 29.4% (certified 28.7%) for double-sided textured perovskite/silicon tandem cells featuring large-size pyramids (2-3 mu m) and 26.3% over an aperture area of 16 cm(2). This advance provides a route for large-scale production of perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells, marking a significant stride toward their commercial viability.

Abstract:A novel fluorocarbon‐solvents bath annealing approach is developed, and the previously neglected solvent‐to‐solvent interaction between two fluorocarbon solvents, perfluorodecalin (PFD) and perfluorotoluene (PFT), and perovskite precursor solvents (e,g, dimethyl sulfoxide) is investigated to achieve highly crystalline and enlarged grain size of perovskite films. The resulting planar solar cell achieves a remarkable improved efficiency of 24.26% with suitability for large‐area devices. Thermal annealing is a critical process in producing high‐quality perovskite films for high‐performance perovskite solar cells. Conventional TA presents challenges such as delayed heat transfer, leading to unwanted crystal growth and hindering processing scalability. Solvent‐bath annealing is an attractive approach that can improve heat transfer and promote perovskite crystallization by immersing the as‐deposited precursor film in a liquid medium. In this study, fluorocarbon‐based solvents are developed as novel solvent baths for uniform heat flow through omnidirectional annealing. In addition, the previously neglected solvent‐to‐solvent interaction between fluorocarbon and solvents for perovskite precursor is investigated by comparing two fluorocarbon solvents. By increasing the solvent‐solvent interaction, higher quality perovskite films with increased crystallinity, improved perovskite transition, and reduced film defects are achieved. As a result, the perovskite solar cells exhibited an increased power conversion efficiency with excellent reproducibility. These findings suggest that the selection of suitable solvent bath is promising for further improving perovskite quality and device performance.
