Abstract:CsPbI3 inorganic perovskites with ideal bandgap and much enhanced thermal stability compared with organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites, have attracted much interest in the field of solar cells. The performances of solar cells highly depend on the quality of perovskite films, yet the research on fabrication methods of inorganic perovskites is far below that of organic-inorganic hybrid counterparts. Antisolvent engineering is a widely used method in controlling the morphology and crystallinity of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites. Its effect varies with parameters such as the physicochemical properties of antisolvents and the compositions of perovskite precursors. Specially, there lacks a comprehensive study comparing different antisolvents used in low-temperature processed CsPbI3 from dimethylammonium-based precursors. In this work, we used three different antisolvents to control the growth of CsPbI3 films in a low-temperature (<200 degrees C) processed procedure and systematically compared the properties of resultant films. The green antisolvent ethyl acetate (EA) engineered CsPbI3 films exhibit improved morphology and crystallinity as well as reduced defects, compared with the counterparts processed without antisolvent or those with widely employed toxic antisolvents toluene and chlorobenzene. The EA antisolvent engineering results in efficient CsPbI3 perovskite solar cells with a champion power conversion efficiency of 8.8%. Our work thus provides a green and viable way to prepare high quality CsPbI3 perovskite films for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Solvent engineering technology is an important approach for fabrication of high quality perovskite films, and thereby high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, it is strongly dependent on the usage of toxic solvents, including the host solvent and anti-solvent to prepare perovskite solutions and control the crystallization of perovskite films, respectively. The usage of toxic solvents poses a serious threat to the health of manufactures and the safety of environment. Therefore, the solvent toxicity has become a burning issue before the forthcoming commercialization of PSCs. Here, we report an all green solvent engineering to prepare high quality (FAPbI3)1-x(MAPbBr3)x (x=0, 0.05) films, where a green Lewis base solvent of triethyl phosphate (TEP) is used to prepare (FAPbI3)1-x(MAPbBr3)x/TEP solution, and a non-polar solvent of dibutyl ether (DEE) is used as anti-solvent. In this approach, a new intermediate phase film is formed after spin-coating the (FAPbI3)1-x(MAPbBr3)x/TEP solution on substrates, followed by dropping of DEE during spinning, and subsequently convert into perovskite films by annealing. Finally, it enables a PCE of 18.65% (x=0) and 20.13% (x=0.05) basing on a typical device configuration of FTO/SnO2/Perovskite/Spiro-OMeTAD/Au, which is the highest value for the all green solvent processed PSCs. More importantly, the all green solvent engineering approach can also be used to prepare another typical perovskite of MAPbI3 films for efficient solar cells. Therefore, this work not only provides an universial approach to prepare typical organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite films, but also addresses the solvent toxicity during the production of perovskite films. The green solvent engineering may pave the way for future industrial scale production of PSCs under environment friendly conditions.

Abstract:Over the last decade, remarkable progress has been made in metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs), which have been a focus of emerging photovoltaic techniques and show great potential for commercialization. However, the upscaling of small-area PSCs to large-area solar modules to meet the demands of practical applications remains a significant challenge. The scalable production of high-quality perovskite films by a simple, reproducible process is crucial for resolving this issue. Furthermore, the crystallization behavior in the solution-processed fabrication of perovskite films can be strongly influenced by the physicochemical properties of the precursor inks, which are significantly affected by the employed solvents and their interactions with the solutes. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of solvent engineering for fabricating perovskite films over large areas is urgently required. In this paper, we first analyze the role of solvents in the solution-processed fabrication of large-area perovskite films based on the classical crystal nucleation and growth mechanism. Recent efforts in solvent engineering to improve the quality of perovskite films for solar modules are discussed. Finally, the basic principles and future challenges of solvent system design for scalable fabrication of high-quality perovskite films for efficient solar modules are proposed.

Abstract:Organ–inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted extensive attention with a certified power conversion efficiency (PCE) beyond 25% due to their superior photoelectric properties. However, most reported high‐efficiency PSCs are fabricated with toxic solvents, which raises a major obstacle for potential commercialization. Herein, the recent research progress of green solvents for high‐efficiency PSCs is summarized from antisolvents, precursor solvents, and solvents for electron/hole transport materials, aiming to promote the development of green solvents for PSCs and meet the requirement of sustainable development of the PSCs field. Future challenges and prospects are also discussed to expedite the rational design of green‐solvent‐processed PSCs.

Abstract:AbstractHigh‐performance perovskite solar cells (PVSCs) with low energy consumption and green processing are highly desired, but constrained by the difficulty in morphology control and the poor understanding on morphology evolution mechanisms. To address this issue, here we studied the effect of antisolvents on the perovskite film formation. We found that both the antisolvents and the perovskite composition affect the perovskite film morphology greatly via influencing the intermediate phase, and different perovskite compositions require different antisolvents to reach the optimal morphology. This provides the opportunity to achieve high‐performance PVSCs with green antisolvent, that is, isopropanol (iPA) by changing the perovskite compositions, and leads to a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.50% for PVSCs based on MA0.6FA0.4PbI3. Further, we fabricated “fully green” PVSCs with all layers prepared by green solvents, and the optimal PCE can reach 19%, which represents the highest among PVSCs with full‐green processing. This work provides insight into the perovskite morphology evolution and paves the way toward “green” processing PVSCs.

Abstract:Perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells hold great promise for realizing high power conversion efficiency at low cost. However, achieving scalable fabrication of wide-bandgap perovskite (similar to 1.68 eV) in air, without the protective environment of an inert atmosphere, remains challenging due to moisture-induced degradation of perovskite films. Herein, this study reveals that the extent of moisture interference is significantly influenced by the properties of solvent. We further demonstrate that n-Butanol (nBA), with its low polarity and moderate volatilization rate, not only mitigates the detrimental effects of moisture in air during scalable fabrication but also enhances the uniformity of perovskite films. This approach enables us to achieve an impressive efficiency of 29.4% (certified 28.7%) for double-sided textured perovskite/silicon tandem cells featuring large-size pyramids (2-3 mu m) and 26.3% over an aperture area of 16 cm(2). This advance provides a route for large-scale production of perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells, marking a significant stride toward their commercial viability.

Abstract:The unprecedented development of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) makes them one of the most promising candidates for terawatt-scale green energy production with low cost. However, the high boiling point solvents during the solution-processed film deposition cause anisotropic crystal growth and toxic solvent vapor during high-throughput manufacturing. Here, a dual-component green solvent consisting of isopropyl acetate and acetonitrile is proposed to form a volatile perovskite precursor, which can realize the high-quality perovskite thin film deposition by intermediate phase regulation. A room-temperature stable perovskite intermediate phase is constructed with the engagement of isopropyl acetate as co-solvent, which suppresses the exploding nucleation rate in volatile perovskite precursor, providing a fine grain growth rate and wide processing window in scalable film deposition. The corresponding PSCs fabricated by blade coating without anti-solvents or gas quenching achieve power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.37% and 15.29% for the areas of 14.08 cm2 and 37.83 cm2, respectively.

Abstract:Currently, the preparation of high-efficiency inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is on the basis of using highly toxic solvents such as chlorobenzene as the anti-solvent of perovskite layer and the solvent of electron transport layer (ETL). There is an urgent need for greener solvents to reduce chronic health risks. Here, we proposed a green solvent system in which tetraethyl orthocarbonate was employed as an anti-solvent for the preparation of perovskite film and anisole was used as a solvent for dissolving the ETL. The PSCs processed by the green solvent engineering were demonstrated to have higher efficiencies than the chlorobenzene counterparts, achieving a champion efficiency of 18.15%. This result was benefited from the suppression of carrier recombination, owing to the improved film quality of perovskite and ETL. The adoption of the green solvent scheme will greatly reduce the health risks of researchers and employees, and shows great potential for the preparation of environmentally friendly perovskite-based optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:The deposition of the perovskite films usually uses toxic and flammable solvents, resulting in adverse effects on the environment and operators. Selection criteria for green solvents, solubility prediction of precursor salts, and properties survey of antisolvents are very essential. Sustainable green solvents can remarkably reduce the Safety, Health, and Environmental risks and enhance the sustainability of perovskite technologies. It holds great commercial significance. Lead halide perovskites have revolutionized the field of optoelectronics and attracted worldwide attention due to their outstanding semiconducting characteristics. Meanwhile, solution processability and printability of the perovskite allow the commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) profitable. However, deposition of the perovskite films usually uses polar aprotic solvents. The popular antisolvents are aromatics or aromatic halogenated hydrocarbons. All of them have a high risk of toxicity and flammability. To reduce the adverse effects on the environment and operators and enhance the sustainability of perovskite technologies, researchers have made lots of efforts to study sustainable green solvents. Herein, the selection criteria of green solvents are surveyed. Methods of solubility prediction of precursor solvents are comprehensively discussed from the perspectives of polarity and Lewis acid–base chemistry. The significance of antisolvent polarity and boiling point is emphasized. Research advances in green solvents are summarized. Finally, this review presents in‐depth insights into green‐solvent‐processable perovskites and highlights research directions for perovskite modules in the future. It lays a good foundation for the commercialization and sustainable development of PSCs.

Abstract:Conventional antisolvents such as chlorobenzene and benzo trifluoride are highly toxic and volatile, which are not preferred for large-scale fabrication. Therefore, green antisolvents are favored for the eco-friendly fabrication of perovskite films. This review primarily discusses the impact of various green antisolvents on the fabrication of thin perovskite films and analyzes the main chemical characteristics of these green antisolvents. It also interprets the impact of green antisolvent treatment on crystal growth and nucleation crystallization mechanisms. It introduces the effective fabrication of large-area devices using green antisolvents and analyzes the mechanisms by which green antisolvents enhance stability. Subsequently, several green antisolvents capable of preparing highly stable and efficient devices are listed. Finally, we outline the key challenges and future prospects of antisolvent treatment, this review paves the way for industrial fabrication.

Abstract:Hybrid inorganic-organic perovskite solar cells have attracted great attention with power conversion efficiencies exceeding 20% using dimethylformamide or dimethyl sulfoxide for the deposition of the perovskite films. Replacing the toxic solvents with non-toxic solvents is one of the key challenges to realize industrial scale commercialization for the perovskite photovoltaics. Here, environmentally friendly solvent systems are employed for processing the perovskite active layer by a two-step spin-coating approach: aqueous Pb(NO3)2 is first spin-coated on mesoporous TiO2 film, and followed by spin-coating of methylammonium iodide in isopropanol. We found that the resulting perovskite was homogeneously covered on the TiO2 surface with relatively high coverage. The best performing perovskite solar cell shows a power conversion efficiency of 13.7% under standard conditions (AM1.5, 100mWcm−2).

Abstract:Abstract Organic–inorganic hybrid halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have recently drawn enormous attentions due to their impressive performance (>22%) and low temperature solution processability (<150 °C). Current solution process involves application of a large amount of toxic solvents, such as chlorobenzene, which is heavily employed in both the perovskite layer and the hole transport layer (HTL) deposition. Herein, this study employs green solvent of ethyl acetate for engineering efficient perovskite and HTL layers, which enables a synergic interface (perovskite/HTL) optimization. A champion efficiency of 19.43% is obtained for small cells (0.16 cm 2 with mask) and over 14% for large size modules (5 × 5 cm 2 ). The PSCs prepared from the green solvent engineering demonstrate superior performance on both efficiency and stability over their chlorobenzene counterparts. These enhancements are ascribed to the in situ inhibition on carrier recombination induced by interfacial defects during the solution processing, which enables about 2/3 reduction of calculated recombination rate. Thus, the green solvent route shows the great potential toward environmental‐friendly manufacturing.

Abstract:All-brominated inorganic perovskite CsPbBr3 has received much attention in the field of optoelectronic applications owing to its superb stability and ease of manufacture under the ambient condition. However, the tedious process and toxic solvent are two major challenges for fabrication of CsPbBr3 films via a multi-step deposition method. Here, we demonstrate a sustainable bi-solvent system for preparing high-quality CsPbBr3 films in a triple-step solution-processed route, where the bi-solvent system comprises of green solvent water and ethylene glycol monomethyl ether (EGME) in place of the noxious methanol for CsBr solution. By adjusting the temperature of heat treatment and spin-coating speed, the pinhole-free, ultra-smooth and high crystallinity of CsPbBr3 films were obtained. As a result, the CsPbBr3 PSC prepared from the green bi-solvent system demonstrates an optimal power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.55%, which is one of the highest efficiencies for planar carbon-based PSCs without hole transport layer. Moreover, the all-inorganic unpacked PSCs exhibit excellent humidity stability under ambient environment for 34 days. Our result not only offers a facile and simple way to fabricate the pure-phase CsPbBr3 films, but also alleviates the solvent toxicity during the preparation of CsPbBr3 PSCs.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) toward practical application relies on high efficiency, long lifetime, low toxicity, and device up-scaling. To realize large-area PSCs, a green solution-bathing strategy is delivered to prepare high-performance PSCs. By utilizing 2-pentanol as a green solvent and formamidinium chloride (FACl) as a solute in the green solution-bathing process, perovskite films with enlarged grain sizes, improved crystallinity, and alleviated defect state density were obtained, resulting in the enhancement in the power conversion efficiency of PSCs. Coupled with 2-pentanol and FACT, both a champion efficiency of 21.03% for small cells (0.103 cm(2)) and an efficiency of over 18% for large size (1.00 cm(2)) were obtained based on the GSB process, which can outperform its counterpart made via the commonly used antisolvent-dropping method. In addition, a large perovskite film (5 cm x 5 cm) with obvious mirror effect was successfully prepared. Our innovative approach paves the way to promote device up-scaling of PSCs via an environmentally friendly technique.
Controlling Homogenous Spherulitic Crystallization for High-Efficiency Planar Perovskite Solar Cells Fabricated under Ambient High-Humidity Conditions

Abstract:The influence of precursor solution properties, fabrication environment, and antisolvent properties on the microstructural evolution of perovskite films is reported. First, the impact of fabrication environment on the morphology of methyl ammonium lead iodide (MAPbI(3)) perovskite films with various Lewis-base additives is reported. Second, the influence of antisolvent properties on perovskite film microstructure is investigated using antisolvents ranging from nonpolar heptane to highly polar water. This study shows an ambient environment that accelerates crystal growth at the expense of nucleation and introduces anisotropies in crystal morphology. The use of antisolvents enhances nucleation but also influences ambient moisture interaction with the precursor solution, resulting in different crystal morphology (shape, size, dispersity) in different antisolvents. Crystal morphology, in turn, dictates film quality. A homogenous spherulitic crystallization results in pinhole-free films with similar microstructure irrespective of processing environment. This study further demonstrates propyl acetate, an environmentally benign antisolvent, which can induce spherulitic crystallization under ambient environment (52% relative humidity, 25 degrees C). With this, planar perovskite solar cells with approximate to 17.78% stabilized power conversion efficiency are achieved. Finally, a simple precipitation test and in situ crystallization imaging under an optical microscope that can enable a facile a priori screening of antisolvents is shown.
Printing High‐Efficiency Perovskite Solar Cells in High‐Humidity Ambient Environment—An In Situ Guided Investigation

Abstract:Extensive studies are conducted on perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with significant performance advances (mainly spin coating techniques), which have encouraged recent efforts on scalable coating techniques for the manufacture of PSCs. However, devices fabricated by blade coating techniques are inferior to state‐of‐the‐art spin‐coated devices because the power conversion efficiency (PCE) is highly dependent on the morphology and crystallization kinetics in the controlled environment and the delicate solvent system engineering. In this study, based on the widely studied perovskite solution system dimethylformamide–dimethyl sulfoxide, air‐knife‐assisted ambient fabrication of PSCs at a high relative humidity of 55 ± 5% is reported. In‐depth time‐resolved UV–vis spectrometry is carried out to investigate the impact of solvent removal and crystallization rate, which are critical factors influencing the crystallization kinetics and morphology because of adventitious moisture. UV–vis spectrometry enables accurate determination of the thickness of the wet precursor film. Anti‐solvent‐free, high‐humidity ambient coatings of hysteresis‐free PSCs with PCEs of 21.1% and 18.0% are demonstrated for 0.06 and 1 cm2 devices, respectively. These PSCs exhibit comparable stability to those fabricated in a glovebox, thus demonstrating their high potential.

Abstract:Toxic solvents used in the fabrication of perovskite solar cells are an obstacle for their commercialization. Replacing those toxic solvents with green solvents is very important for both ecological environment safety and the health of operators working in manufactory and labs. CsPbBr3‐based solar cells have attracted increasing attention due to its high stability. Herein, high‐quality CsPbBr3 films are prepared using all green solvents based on a two‐step spin‐coating method. In the first step, a green solvent system of polyethylene glycol (PEG) with the addition of γ‐butyrolactone is used for preparing PbBr2 solutions by matching the Hansen solubility parameters (HSPs) between PbBr2 and the mixed solvent system. By optimizing the HSPs and viscosity, a new complex of PbBr2·(PEG) is formed by spin‐coating from the PbBr2 solution, followed by acetic acid dropping while spinning. In the second step, green water is used to dissolve CsBr to prepare a high concentration CsBr/H2O solution. High‐quality CsPbBr3 films with full coverage are obtained by spin‐coating CsBr/H2O solution onto the PbBr2·(PEG) films after annealing. As a result, a solar cell with configuration of fluorine‐doped tin oxide/TiO2/CsPbBr3/carbon exhibits a power conversion efficiency of 8.11% due to its high‐quality harvest layer.
