Abstract:Micropowder (20-250 µm) made from ground dry waste sludge from a municipal sewage treatment plant was added in a sequencing batch reactor (R2), which was fed by synthetic wastewater with acetate as carbon source. Compared with the traditional SBR (R1), aerobic sludge granulation time was shortened 15 days in R2. Furthermore, filamentous bacteria in bulking sludge were controlled to accelerate aerobic granulation and form large granules. Correspondingly, the SVI decreased from 225 mL/g to 37 mL/g. X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis demonstrated that Al and Si from the micropowder were accumulated in granules. A mechanism hypotheses for the acceleration of aerobic granulation by adding dry sludge micropowder is proposed: added micropowder acts as nuclei to induce bacterial attachment; dissolved matters from the micropowder increase abruptly the organic load for starved sludge to control overgrown filamentous bacteria as a framework for aggregation; increased friction from the movement of micropowder forces the filaments which extend outwards to shrink for shaping granules.

Abstract:The chemical and geotechnical properties of solidified/stabilized (s/s) municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash are of prime importance for the design and operation of landfill sites. This study conducted field and laboratory tests to investigate aging effects on the chemical and geotechnical properties of s/s MSWI fly ash. Field investigations included borehole sampling and cone penetration tests (CPTs), and laboratory analyses included the measurement of the chemical, physical, hydrological, and mechanical properties of s/s fly ash with different fill ages. The results showed that: 1) Cl concentrations in landfill leachate were as high as 52,700 mg.L-1, which may present a technical challenge for leachate treatment; 2) specific gravity decreased with fill age, which was attributed to the leaching of metal elements from the s/s fly ash; 3) mean particle size decreased with fill age, resulting in an increase in the gravimetric moisture retention capacity (MRC) and a decrease in the saturated hydraulic conductivity; 4) gravimetric MRC was much higher than the initial moisture content, suggesting water absorption by s/s fly ash after landfilling; and 5) shear strength decreased with fill age, which was consistent with the CPTs results. To improve the design and operation of s/s MSWI fly ash landfill sites, the following suggestions are made: 1) the use of concentrated MSW landfill leachate in the s/s fly ash process should be avoided to reduce the concentrations of subsequent landfill leachate; 2) leachate generation could be further reduced by improving landfill operation practices and by taking advantage of the absorption capacity of s/s fly ash; and 3) the specific geotechnical parameters of s/s fly ash should be obtained prior to the design of landfill sites, and their aging effects should also be taken into consideration.

Abstract:A large amount of industrial solid waste (including waste plastics, textiles, wood, etc., which are byproducts of industrial production) urgently needs to be treated. Incineration is undoubtedly the most efficient and convenient method. The existing municipal solid waste incineration plants can be transformed to burn such industrial wastes. However, the potential risks associated with high levels of heavy metals in industrial waste and the air pollution caused by co-incineration pose significant challenges to the co-incineration disposal of industrial solid waste. The change of physical and chemical properties of municipal solid waste and the emission characteristics of flue gas pollutants after co-incineration of industrial waste were studied by means of material flow simulation and experiment. In addition, experiments were designed to study the effects of temperature, calcium sulfur ratio and chlorine content on heavy metal emission during the incineration of industrial waste. The results showed that co-incineration of a certain proportion of industrial waste significantly increased the calorific value of municipal solid waste, but excessive mixing of plastic and paper industrial waste would increase the ash content. Co-incineration of plastic industrial waste can significantly increase HCl, and with the increase of temperature, the transformation of Cl to HCl is more thorough. The increase of temperature can promote the migration of Cr, Pb and Se elements to the gas phase. When Cr, Pb, and Se elements are present in the gas phase, they can combine with other gases and aerosols to form particulate matter and toxic substances, causing air pollution. When Ca/S is 1, Ba, Mn, Ni, Zn can effectively reduce the retention rate of elements in the ash. Under certain conditions, chlorine in industrial waste plastics will react with Zn to form tiny particles and low boiling point chlorides, which will increase its volatility. The mineral components in the ash can also be used for making ceramsite and building materials. These results will provide reference for the pollutants controlling during co-incineration of industrial waste and municipal solid waste process.

Abstract:This study examines the impact of chlorine and glass additives (SiO 2 and B 2 O 3 ) on heavy metal volatilization during vitrification of simulated Municipal Solid Waste Incineration (MSWI) fly ashes. Different simulated MSWI fly ash compositions were subjected to chloride volatilization, revealing that treating MSWI fly ash with Cl increases heavy metal volatilization especially Pb and Cu to about 40% and 20% respectively. Incorporating glass additives into fly ash with chlorine increases Pb volatilization by almost 80%, and Cu by 50%, and enables non-volatile Cd and Zn to vaporize.

Abstract:The co-processing of hazardous waste in a cement kiln can eliminate a large quantity of hazardous wastes, but the excessive existence of chlorine will affect not only the operation of a cement kiln but also the quality of cement products. In this study, the mixtures of hazardous waste incineration residue and raw meal were incinerated in a high temperature tubular furnace. The distribution ratio of chlorine in flue gas, clinker and fly ash under different experiment conditions was obtained and the influence of the co-processing conditions on chlorine evolution and transformation was studied. The results showed that chlorine mainly existed in flue gas and clinker, and only less than 1% of chlorine existed in fly ash. The incineration temperature had a significant influence on the distribution of chlorine. The higher the incinerating temperature, the greater the distribution ratio of chlorine in flue gas and fly ash. The proportion of chlorine in all parts remained basically unchanged while the temperature was higher than 1300°C. With the increase of the retention time, the proportion of chlorine released into the flue gas increased. The distribution ratio of chlorine in each part remained unchanged after about 30 minutes. There were four stages of the rate of chlorine release. In addition, the chlorine content of the sample had little effect on the partition of chlorine. Some suggestions on the co-processing of hazardous waste in a cement kiln are put forward based on these experimental results.

Abstract:Co-combustion of sewage sludge and municipal solid waste (MSW) in grate furnaces (GF) is a promising method to meet strict environmental requirements and reduce construction costs given its high market share in China. However, considering the high ash content and low heat value of sludge, co-combustion of sludge and MSW in GF may lead to combustion instability and an increase of fly ash (FA) production, which further aggravates ash deposition and corrosion of heating surfaces. Besides, semi-dried sludge powder with tiny particle size may cause dust explosion and increase the clinker ignition loss of slag ash due to the leakage in grates. In this study, semi-dried sludge powder is compressed into pellets through a rotary ring die granulator to investigate the effect of sludge pellets addition on gaseous pollutant emissions, combustion characteristics and ash behavior (e.g., ash fusion temperature and the clinker ignition loss of slag ash). The results show that the ratio of FA produced from sludge pellets incineration is lower than that of sludge powder. The clinker ignition loss of slag ash of sludge pellets increases with the increase of its compressive strength. The highest clinker ignition loss under the low combustion temperature is 11.9% which is far beyond the limit (5%) for GF. The addition of desulfurizer (CaO, mass ratio: 1%) in sludge pellets is found useful to reduce sulfur dioxide emission with the maximum 84% desulphurization rate at the combustion section. The decrease of ash flow temperature from co-combustion of sludge and MSW is less than 10 °C compared to that from mono-combustion of MSW, which suggests that co-combustion of sludge with the mixing ratio of 10% in municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWI) has little impact on fly ash slagging characteristics. The ash characteristics and gaseous pollutant emissions during co-combustion of sludge pellets and municipal solid waste are investigated.

Abstract:In order to investigate inorganic chlorine released from the process of medical waste pyrolysis/incineration,a series experiments with different pyrolysis temperature,combustion temperature and gas flow rate were conducted;the effect of other compositions on inorganic chlorine emission from medical tube(PVC)incineration was also studied.Total conversion rate of inorganic chlorine just slightly changes under diferent conditions,but the variation in conversion rate of Cl2 and HCl are comparatively remarkable.Compared to the single PVC incineration,the addition of fiber can obviously promote Cl2 formation,and slightly prevent HCl release.HCl emission is significantly reduced by the presence of rubber,the conversion rate of HCl decreased.

Abstract:At the present time,few researchers in our country pay their attention on the mechanism of the incineration of hazardous wastes, especially on the mechanism of emissions of chlorine,heavy metals and the relation of them.Based on the fact mentioned above,we choose one of the hazardous waste,the dying residue,as the study object.We mainly study the emission characteristics of hydrochlorine when combusting the dying residue in a tubular furnace;moreover,we utilize the thermodynamics equilibrium model to investigate the effect of chlorine on the emissions of several heavy metals during incineration;finally,we also make a little researches on getting rid of chlorine with sorbents when disposing the hazardous wastes with rotary kiln.

Abstract:High chloride content in municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash is a critical restriction for the recycling and re-utilization due to the acceleration of the corrosion process in construction material. Therefore, the investigation of chloride distribution and transition behavior in fly ash is of great significance. In this study, the distribution and chemical species of chloride in fly ash were first analyzed through varying mechanical pressures (10, 30, 50, 70, and 100 MPa) and sintering temperatures (300 °C, 400 °C and 500 °C) during the pressure-assisted sintering process. Instrumental analyses of SEM-EDX, element mapping, XPS, XRD and chloride leaching concentration were conducted to explore the chloride transition behavior. The results suggested that chlorides were homogeneously distributed on the surface of fly ash particles, which was significantly influenced by the microstructure change during the pressure-assisted sintering process. In addition, the chloride migration was enhanced by the pore shrinkage under different mechanical pressures and the increased atomic mobility at various temperatures. The mineral results showed that the main crystals in raw fly ash were NaCl, KCl and CaClOH, and the minerals were transformed into more complex and stable crystal phases, such as Ca10(Si2O7)2SiO4Cl2(OH)2 and Ca10(SiO4)3(SO4)3Cl. The transformation of chloride from soluble salts to stable Cl-containing minerals is beneficial to the immobilization of chloride, which suggested that pressure-assisted sintering could effectively decrease the chloride leaching concentration. This study provides a further understanding of chloride transition and distribution behavior during pressure-assisted sintering treatment.

Abstract:We used two approaches to investigate the impact of sulfur and chlorine compounds on transfer of a semivolatile heavy metal, cadmium, during municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration: experiments using a tubular furnace reactor and thermodynamic equilibrium calculations. Artificial wastes representative of typical MSW in China with and without the presence of sulfur and chlorine compounds were combusted at 850°C, and the partitioning of Cd among bottom ash, fly ash and flue gas was quantified. The results indicate that sulfur compounds in the elemental form and reduced state could stabilize Cd in the form of CdS due to local reducing environment, while sulfur in the oxidized forms slightly increased Cd volatilization during incineration. In contrast, the presence of chlorine compounds significantly increased the partitioning of Cd on fly ash. Chemical equilibrium calculations show that sulfur binds with Cd and alters Cd speciation at low temperatures (<700°C), while chlorine significantly increases the volatilization of Cd through formation of volatile CdCl2 and thus its partitioning on the fly ash between 400 and 1000°C. The equilibrium calculation results also suggest that SiO2- and Al2O3-containing minerals could function as sorbents stabilizing Cd as condensed phase solids (CdSiO3 and CdAl2O4). These findings provide useful information on understanding the partitioning behavior of Cd and can help development of strategies to control volatilization of Cd during MSW incineration.
Formation and Inhibition of Polychlorinated-ρ-dibenzodioxins and Dibenzofurans from Mechanical Grate Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Systems

Abstract:This study is carried out in two full-scale (300 t/d) municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWI), focusing on the inhibition effect on polychlorinated-rho-dibenzodioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) formation by the Sulfur-, Phosphorus-, and Nitrogen-containing inhibitors. The inhibition efficiencies of total PCDD/F range from 45.77 % to 58.55 %, meanwhile, from 50.1 % to 57.6 % for toxic PCDD/F. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results conduct the inhibition effect on the three key factors of PCDD/F formation: catalytic metal, carbon source and chlorine source. Inhibitors can increase the proportion of inorganic chlorine form at the ash surface. The changes of sulfur and phosphorus forms support the inhibition mechanisms of PCDD/F. De novo synthesis is the stable inhibition pathway in this study, meanwhile, the chlorophenols-route and dibenzodioxin and dibenzofuran chlorination also work in some tests. The results are the basics for further industrial application of PCDD/F inhibitors and benefit in controlling the PCDD/F emission from MSWI.

In this study, the partition of Cl in flue gas, fly ash and residual solid under different experiment conditions was obtained by using tubular furnace to incinerate mixtures of rectification residue and raw meal. The chlorine content in flue gas was determined using ion chromatography and the chlorine content in fly ash and residual solid was measured by high temperature combustion hydrolyzing-ion chromatography. The results showed that chlorine mainly existed in flue gas and residual solid, and only less than 3.5% of chlorine existed in fly ash. The incineration temperature had a significant effect on the distribution of chlorine in each part. The higher the incinerating temperature, the greater the proportion of chlorine in flue gas and fly ash. While temperatures were higher than 1300 degrees C, the proportion of chlorine in all parts remained basically unchanged, roughly 18:14:1. With the increase of the retention time, the proportion of chlorine in the residual solid decreased gradually, and the proportion of chlorine in the flue gas increased gradually. The distribution ratio of chlorine in each part remained unchanged after about 30 min. In addition, the chlorine content of the sample and the air flow rate had a relatively slight effect on the partition of chlorine. Effects of Municipal Solid Waste Component on Gasification Performance and Chromium Partitioning Behavior under CO2 Atmosphere

Abstract:Municipal solid waste (MSW) consists of complex components with high chromium (Cr) content, for which CO2 gasification is an effective MSW treatment technology. Herein, the main components of mixed MSW, including kitchen waste (KW), paper, printed circuit board (PCB), plastic, pine wood (PW) and rubber, have been separated. At 700-900 degrees C, CO2 gasification performance and Cr partitioning behavior of MSW components as well as mixed MSW are investigated to determine the role of each component. KW exhibits a significant catalytic effect on rubber decomposition at 700 degrees C, which increases the CO yield of mixed MSW by 0.11 Nm(3)/kg. However, further increases in temperature can weaken this catalytic effect. According to the linear superposition parameter of MSW components, the Cr content in mixed MSW gasification ash slightly increased with increasing temperature, while the Cr enrichment ratio decreased. In fact, both quantities tend to increase with 57.36 -> 132.71 mg/kg and 41.61 % -> 62.21 %, respectively. Paper, plastic and PW gasification ash can adsorb Cr released from KW, PCB and rubber; although KW induces higher amounts of toxic Cr(VI), increasing temperature reduces its content. In addition, KW and PW contribute to the formation of glass phase, which immobilizes Cr in non-bioavailable forms. Consequently, KW, paper and plastic are the main components of mixed MSW (83.33 wt%) and the main contributors to gasification performance (>78 %), while PCB and rubber mainly result in Cr environmental risk (>61 %). Under CO2 gasification, unclassified MSW can still achieve high energy utilization and reduce Cr pollution.
Two-stage Countercurrent Water-Washing Characteristics of Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash from Grate Furnace

Abstract:The effects of washing liquid-solid ratio and time on dissolution of chlorine salt in municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash, sampled from a grate furnace were analyzed. The research about two-stage countercurrent water-washing process was carried out. The theoretical calculation models of chlorine mass concentration in washing solution as well as chlorine mass fraction in washed residue were built under the simulation of two-stage countercurrent water-washing process. Results showed that chlorine dissolved quantity became stable when the liquid-solid ratio was 6 mL/g and the time was about 20 min. The mass loss of fly ash after primary and secondary washing was about 32% and 37%, respectively. Two-stage countercurrent water-washing can obviously promote the removal of chlorine from fly ash at the same liquid-solid ratio, compared with primary water-washing. The removal of chlorine from fly ash increased by 15.40% to 61.15% when the liquid-solid ratio was 2 to 6 mL/g. The calculated values obtained from the theoretical models had good correlation with the measured values and the root-mean-square-error was small. The pollutants in the washing solution generated from the two washing processes, such as COD, mass concentration of NH3-N, and pH value exceeded the discharge standard in wastewater quality standards for discharge to municipal sewers, thus the washing solution need further purification before being discharged into the urban sewage system.

Abstract:This study was carried out to investigate the effects of seed sludge properties and the selective sludge discharge method on aerobic granulation in biological wastewater treatment. Small-loose flocs and larger-denser flocs were separated from raw activated sludge by sedimentation in a settling column. The two types of sludge were used as seed biomass in two laboratory batch reactors for the granulation experiment. A fixed daily sludge discharge ratio of around 10% of slow-settling sludge was applied to the two reactors. The results showed that aerobic granules could be formed in the reactors from both seed sludge of different structural and settling properties. The initial washout of small-loose sludge flocs during the start-up of the bioreactors did not appear to be a crucial factor for granulation. The key operating parameter was the daily discharge of relatively slow-settling biomass from the reactors. PCR-DGGE analysis showed insignificant differences between the bacterial communities of the mature granular sludge in the two reactors. It implied that continuous discharge of small and slow-settling flocs removed these competitors for substrate uptake from the system and hence made the substrate more available for large and compact flocs and granules. This selective sludge discharge facilitated the growth and accumulation of denser sludge in the reactor, leading to complete granulation.

Abstract:Chlorine is a common element in the environment where it mostly exists in an inorganic ionic state that is highly mobile and non-degradable. It is important to investigate the potential release of chlorine into the environment from mineralized waste (MW) for stable landfill reclamation. In this study, inorganic chlorine in the MW migration process was explored during thermal treatment for chlorine pollution control. The temperature and chlorine greatly affected the distribution of inorganic chlorine in the thermally treated products. Below 800 °C, more than 60% of the inorganic chlorine remained in the bottom slag. Above 900 °C, volatilization caused the release of chlorine from the MW and more than 75% of the inorganic chlorine was deposited inside the furnace. The mass of inorganic chlorine deposited in the thermal treatment furnace was significantly correlated with the actual temperature. At 1000 °C, the masses of inorganic chlorine deposited under pyrolysis, incineration, and gasification atmospheres were 7.69, 5.81, and 5.68 mg, respectively. The greatest deposition of inorganic chlorine inside the furnace occurred during pyrolysis. The chlorine migration process must gain more sight during MW thermal processing.

Abstract:In the process of fly ash melting by plasma technology, additives are usually added to improve the melting characteristics of fly ash and reduce the leaching toxicity of heavy metals, thus reduce energy consumption and pollution risk. However, the effect of additives on the migration and transformation of chlorine salts in fly ash during the melting process is rarely reported. In this study, the effect of additives (SiO 2 , Al, B 2 O 3 , bottom slag collected from the same incinerator) on the migration and transformation of chlorine was investigated by experiments and thermodynamic analysis, and the promotion mechanism of water vapor atmosphere on the migration and transformation of chlorine was also discussed. Soluble chloride is transformed into insoluble chloride during plasma melting of fly ash, B 2 O 3 and Al play a role in solidification of the chloride in fly ash, SiO 2 promotes the volatilization of heavy metal chloride salts, the co-melting of fly ash and its homologous bottom ash significantly promotes the reduction of soluble chloride in fly ash, and the content of soluble chloride in fly ash is reduced from 22.39% to 2.2% with the addition of 20% bottom ash. Steam can be used as an inducer and vaporizer to further promote the chlorine volatilization.

Abstract:<p>Aerobic granular sludge is considered one of the most promising biological wastewater treatment technologies of the 21<sup>st</sup> century. However, the long granulation time and poor treatment effect on N and P have severely limited its popularity and large-scale application. In this study, we systematically examine the strengthening effects of zeolite powder on granulation, N and P removal, and their interaction mechanisms. The addition of zeolite powder decreased sludge granulation time to 18 d, and improved average N and P removal rates by 4.48% and 2.22%, respectively. The multi-pore and nutrient-rich environment of the zeolite powder is beneficial for maintaining microbial activity and granular stability. Moreover, its adsorption to N and P enriches their respective removal strains, improving their removal efficiency.</p>

Abstract:The effects of chlorides on the Cu partitioning and speciation in the municipal solid waste (MSW)incineration was investigated using thermodynamic equilibrium calculation and a simulated tubular furnace experiment. The thermodynamic calculation and experimental results show that the form and amount of chloride and the temperature impacted significantly on the Cu partitioning and speciation. Both organic PVC and inorganic NaCl could chlorides copper to form volatile CuCl, as a result, it promotes Cu distribution in fly ash. The NaCl had a more significant effect than the PVC does. The combustion temperature and properties of pyrolysis and combustion of chloride affected Cu partitioning and speciation synergistically. As the temperature increased, the chlorization effect of PVC decreased, whereas the chorization effect of NaCl increased. Incineration time had apparent influence on NaCl but almost no influence on PVC. The results of SEM-EDS show that Cu is present as oxide in bottom ash with PVC addition, while with NaCl addition, Cu as oxide and chloride. The element of Cu in the fly ash is in the form of chloride in small particles.

Abstract:Effects of chlorine, combustion temperature and moisture ratio on the heavy metal distribution are studied with sludge, which is from Shenzhen Municipal Sewage Plant, incinerated in a lab-scale fluidized bed incinerator. The experimental results indicate that percentage of volatile heavy metals in flue gas increase greatly with the increase of temperature, and the increase of moisture ratio of the sludge leads to less percentage of heavy metals Zn and Pb in flue gas. The addition of chlorine also promotes the volatilization of heavy metals, especially for volatile metals.
