Abstract:Nanomaterials could promote cement hydration that leads to better strength development, but their impacts on early shrinkage (up to 72 h) are rarely comprehensively researched. This study aims to investigate the effects of nano-CaCO3 (NC) on early shrinkage and the tensile properties of cement paste, which contains various contents of NC. Before the shrinkage modeling, early shrinkage, water losses, bound water contents (BWC) and pore size distributions (PSD) of cement paste were obtained first. In addition, the tensile strength and tensile strain capacity of the samples were also measured. Results show that the addition of NC increased early total/autogenous shrinkage of cement paste, but revealed different impacts on drying shrinkage. Meanwhile, a parameter rs calculated from PSD and water losses was proposed, and greater drying shrinkage of cement paste was seen with the reduction of rs. Further, a quantitative relationship between rs and early drying shrinkage was built based on experimental results and the theoretical derivation, and a total shrinkage model for 1-day was also built relied on rs as well as the relationship between BWC and autogenous shrinkage. Finally, the use of NC may slightly enhance the tensile properties of cement paste, but it may also raise its cracking risk due to its greater early total shrinkage as measured.
Influence of Mineral Admixtures on early Shrinkage of Ordinary Concrete

Abstract:In this paper the influence of mineral admixtures on early shrinkage of ordinary concrete with the same water-binder ratio is studied by self-made equipment and CABR-NES deformation instrument developed by China Academy of Building Research institute. All concrete specimens are cured with one surface exposed to air and others are covered with plastic film. The replacement ratio of mineral admixtures is 10%, 20% and 30%, respectively, and a mixture of a combination of both fly ash and slag is also studied. The results indicate fly ash reducing the early shrinkage of ordinary concrete, and the shrinkage decreases with the increasing of replacement ratio, but the effect is not so significant when the replacement ratio is above 20%. Slag also reduces the early shrinkage of ordinary concrete, and the shrinkage decreases with the increasing of replacement ratio, but the effect is not so significant when the replacement ratio is below 20%. Mixture with a combination of both fly ash and slag has lower shrinkage than mixture with fly ash.

Abstract:The influence of superplasticizer(SP) on the early age drying shrinkage of cement paste with the same consistency was investigated. To conduct the test, which lasted for 72 hours, three paste mixtures were used for comparison. The 72 hours early age drying shrinkage staring from the initial setting time was measured by a clock gauge. The pore size distribution was measured by Mercury Intrusion Method. The surface tension of capillary simulation liquid and mass loss of paste were also measured. The experimental results showed that the addition of SP increased the early drying shrinkage greatly. The ratios of water evaporation and the total free water in mixtures added with SPs showed great differences. SPs fined the capillary pores of paste, and the volume of pore with diameter within 50 nm was well consistent with shrinkage rate. The addition of SPs did not raise the capillary liquid surface tension. It showed that with the volume of pore with diameter within 50 nm and the ratio of water evaporation and the total free water a tolerable shrinkage result of paste added with SP could be predicted, and the elastic modulus could have an influence on the early shrinkage. These results have never been proposed before.

Abstract:The early age drying shrinkage of cement-based materials with same the same workability staring from the initial setting time was studied. Superplasticizers (SP) were used to get the same workability. The drying shrinkage of paste was measured by clock gauge, and CABR-NES deformation instrument was used to measure the shrinkage of concrete. Temperature probes were buried into both paste and concrete specimen cores to measure the temperature curve, and temperature deformation was considered into the early shrinkage. Results show the addition of SP increases much more shrinkage than the control group, and polycarboxylate SP increases more shrinkage than naphthalene SP. The different temperature peak time of different mixtures show that the addition of SP changes the hydration process of cement, and the shrinkage of cement-based materials after temperature compensation is bigger than the measured value in the first 6 hours, but the gap is not big.

Abstract:Ultra-High Performance Concretes (UHPC) are cement-based materials with a very low water-to-binder ratio that present a very-high compressive strength, high tensile strength and ductility as well as excellent durability, making them very interesting for various civil engineering applications. However, one drawback of UHPC is their pretty high autogenous shrinkage stemming from their very low water-to-binder ratio. There are several options to reduce UHPC shrinkage, such as the use of fibers (steel fibers, polypropylene fibers, wollastonite microfibers), shrinkage-reducing admixtures (SRA), expansive admixtures (EA), saturated lightweight aggregates (SLWA) and superabsorbent polymers (SAP). Other factors related to curing conditions, such as humidity and temperature, also affect the shrinkage of UHPC. The aim of this paper is to investigate the impact of various SRA, different mixing and curing conditions (low to moderate mixing temperatures, moderate to high relative humidity and water immersion) as well as different curing starting times and durations on the shrinkage of UHPC. The major importance of the initial mixing and curing conditions has been clearly demonstrated. It was shown that the shrinkage of the UHPC was reduced by more than 20% at early-age and long-term when the fresh UHPC temperature was closer to 20 °C. In addition, curing by water immersion led to drastic reductions in shrinkage of up to 65% and 30% at early-age and long-term, respectively, in comparison to a 20% reduction for fog curing at early-age. Finally, utilization of a liquid polyol-based SRA allowed for reductions of 69% and 63% of early-age and long-term shrinkages, respectively, while a powder polyol-based SRA provided a decrease of 47% and 35%, respectively.

Abstract:Shrinkage is an important scientific and engineering issue in the study of cement concrete, involving the risk of cracking, safety and durability of the structure. For Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) concrete, capillary tension, represented by internal relative humidity, is normally considered as the main driving force of shrinkage. However, for calcium sulphoaluminate cement (CSA) concrete, it may be completely different. In the present paper, shrinkage performance of normal and high strength CSA concrete is experimentally investigated. Characteristics of shrinkage of CSA concrete comparing to OPC concrete are analyzed and the possible mechanisms are explored. The results show that development of shrinkage of CSA concrete since set obeys two-stage mode, fast growth stage before 2 h and a slowly developing stage after 2 h. In the initial 2 h after set of concrete, more than 85% of the total shrinkage at 28 days is finished. Development of internal relative humidity of CSA concrete also undergoes a moisture saturated stage and a decline stage since casting. In humidity decline stage, less than 15% of the shrinkage of 28 days is developed in the later age although the internal relative humidity is obviously decreased as well in this period. Water content and chemical shrinkage test further confirm that faster water consumption and larger chemical shrinkage are expected for CSA paste and also for CSA concrete, comparing to that of OPC paste or concrete. Hydration particle size test results reveal that the deformability of hydration products of CSA under drying is less than that of hydration products of OPC. This may partially explain why low drying shrinkage of CSA concrete is observed.

Abstract:Chemical shrinkage (CS) is an intrinsic parameter that may affect the early age cracking of paste, mortar and concrete. It is well known as the driving force of self-desiccation, autogenous shrinkage (AGS) and drying shrinkage. During the first stage of cement hydration (at the initial setting time), the CS and AGS are equal. In the hardened stages, there is a difference in values between the two shrinkage parameters. This paper is a comprehensive review on CS and AGS, measurement techniques, modeling and prediction of different cementitious systems. Based on the various experimental studies, chemical shrinkage depends on the water to binder ratio (w/b) and is proportional to the degree of hydration. A low w/b ratio leads to high CS and AGS. The composition of cement has an effect on both CS and AGS. Also, incorporating supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) affects both shrinkage parameters. It is concluded that adding fly ash (FA) to concrete contributes to CS and AGS reductions. However, this is not the case when concrete contains slag. More than 170 references were consulted including 35 which were published after 2020. According to the authors knowledge, there is no published work on the effect of fibers, especially bio-fibers, on the chemical shrinkage of cement-based composites. Therefore, in addition to traditional chemical shrinkage of cementitious systems, this review includes a section on recent papers conducted by the authors on the effect of bio-fibers on the chemical shrinkage of cement composites.

Abstract:The building sector is one of the major consumers of resources and energy. To reduce its environmental impact, alternatives have been proposed: Concrete is manufactured using seawater and sea sand (SWSS) and fly ash (FA)/limestone calcined clay (LC2) to reduce the use of cement, freshwater river sand (FWRS). In this study, we investigated the early-age mechanical properties, self-shrinkage, cracking resistance, water transport characteristics, and pore structure of SWSS concrete with different dosages of FA/LC2 and water-to-binder ratios (W/B). The results showed that SWSS concrete had higher early-age strength and cracking resistance than FWRS concrete due to the stimulation effect of seawater on cement hydration, but also exhibited higher self-shrinkage. The use of FA as supplementary cementitious material reduced both the strength and self-shrinkage of SWSS concrete at early age, while LC2 had a dual effect: it showed low activity in the first day but enhanced hydration and strength development from day 1 to 3. However, LC2 also increased self-shrinkage significantly during this period. By using mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques, we found that when different types of concrete had similar pore characteristics, the proportion of pores smaller than 50 nm was the dominant factor affecting self-shrinkage and its potential evolution. This study provides some references for using SWSS and supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) in concrete applications.

Abstract:In the present paper, shrinkage reduction with pre-wetted LWA of calcium sulphoaluminate cement (CSA) concrete is experimentally investigated. In the test programs, shrinkage of low, medium and high strength CSA concrete with and without internal curing with pre-wetted LWA is measured. Water movement between a single pre-wetted ceramsite particle and the surrounding cement paste during cement hydration is directly measured through a glass tube connected with the ceramsite. The test results show that the main component of shrinkage of CSA concrete, no matter low or high strength concrete, is autogenous shrinkage other than drying shrinkage. Autogenous shrinkage of high strength CSA concrete is much higher than that of low strength CSA concrete. The addition of pre-wetted LWA can greatly reduce the autogenous shrinkage of CSA concrete even the internal curing water to cement ratio used in the concrete is as low as 0.04. The efficiency of shrinkage reduction is influenced by concrete strength or water to binder ratio. The higher the strength, the greater the shrinkage reduction. Water contained in LWA starts to release at about 15-25 min after mixing depending on water to binder ratio of the cement paste. Water movement between LWA and surrounding cement matrix during cement hydration obeys a two-stage mode, a fast releasing stage followed with a slow releasing stage. Amount of releasing water from LWA is obviously influenced by the initial air content in the LWA and the water to binder ratio of the paste. As air content is varied between 0 and 50% in volume, the more the air content, the more the water moved out of LWA. For given initial air content, the lower the water to binder ratio, the more the water removed from the LWA. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Modern concretes often incorporate several chemical admixtures to alter the properties of fresh or hardened concrete. In this work, the influences of three types of chemical admixtures; calcium nitrite inhibitor (CNI), retarder (D − 17) and superplasticizer (W − 19) on free shrinkage and restrained shrinkage cracking of high performance concrete were experimentally investigated. The test results showed that, with the same water to binder ratio (0.4), mixtures containing D − 17 of 0.25 percent or higher ratio of W − 19 (2.76 percent) all exhibited a reduction in free shrinkage and shrinkage cracking width. However, the incorporations of various ratios of CNI into mixtures led to an increase in free shrinkage and shrinkage cracking width as compared to control mixture. In order to study the influence of CNI, the microstructure of concrete mixture containing CNI were investigated by Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry as well as Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM) technique.

Abstract:This study investigates the shrinkage of two sustainable aluminosilicate blends with fly ash or limestone-calcined clay (LC3). Paste and concrete were prepared using these SCMs for the highest possible replacement of binder without compromising the strength. The chemical and autogenous shrinkage were assessed for paste samples and further investigation were conducted on hydration by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Opting for an engineering approach, comparison among different segments of shrinkage i.e., autogenous, drying and total shrinkage of concrete having a specific compressive strength were considered. The initial investigation on paste samples highlighted the dissimilarities in shrinkage and hydration of fly ash and calcined clay. LC3 hydrated faster compared to fly ash leading to greater autogenous shrinkage. The high autogenous shrinkage in the LC3 blend was compensated by a low drying shrinkage for a specific compressive strength. Considering the replacement level of cement, shrinkage, and ecological impact, LC3 proved to be a more sustainable and eco-friendly concrete compared to fly ash.
Early Hydration Heat of Calcium Sulfoaluminate Cement with Influences of Supplementary Cementitious Materials and Water to Binder Ratio

Abstract:Compared to ordinary Portland cement (OPC), calcium sulfoaluminate cement (CSA) displays very early-age strength and faster heat-releasing rate during hydration. In the present paper, the early hydration heat of CSA paste with influences of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) and water to cement (or binder) ratio (w/c) is systematically studied by measuring the heat-releasing rate using a calorimeter. Three traditional SCMs—silica fume (SF), fly ash (FA) and ground granulated blast furnace slag (SL)—were used in the study. A water to cement or binder ratio (w/c) between 0.19 and 0.73 was used in the mixtures. The results show that three exothermic peaks were presented during hydration—dissolution exothermic peak and two reaction exothermic peaks. With the w/c of 0.3, the first and second reaction peaks of the CSA paste are as high as 17.8 times and 4.1 times that of OPC paste, and the occurring time is much earlier than that of the OPC paste. The second reaction peak appears earlier, and the third reaction peak appears later in the pastes with addition of SF than in those without SF. Decreasing w/c can greatly reduce the two reaction peaks of the paste, and it looks that there is a critical value of w/c between 0.24 and 0.30. Above the critical value, the effect of w/c is minor, and below that the influence is obvious. An optimal use of SCMs in CSA pastes under different w/c can greatly decrease the heat releasing while maintaining the required strength.
Unified shrinkage model for concrete from autogenous shrinkage test on paste with and without ground-granulated blast-furnace slag

Abstract:Autogenous shrinkage development was studied as a function of time for cement paste and concrete hydrating under sealed conditions at room temperature. Effects of water-cementitious material ratio (w/cm,) (0.35, 0.40, and 0.45), ground-granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) content as a percentage of total cementitious material (0, 30, and 50%) by mass, and aggregate content (40%) by volume on shrinkage development was obtained. Shrinkage measurements started after 10 hours and lasted up to 90 days. Self-desiccation (that is, reduction in pore humidity) was predicted using the HYMOSTRUC model. The effects of w/cm on shrinkage development can be normalized from shrinkage versus pore humidity curves for portland-cement paste. The aggregate effect on autogenous shrinkage was found to follow a Pickett model developed for drying shrinkage. These results suggest that a unified shrinkage model, which combines autogenous and drying shrinkage, exists. The framework for such a model is presented, which incorporates relative humidity (RH), aggregate content, and restraint factor as major variables. GGBFS initially reduces shrinkage as it behaves as a filler, thus increasing the effective w/cm. While the long-term shrinkage is increased, the major factor is most likely a reduction in pore humidity associated with pozzolanic reactions. Due to a higher internal RH in a 0.45 w/cm system, the pozzolanic effect on autogenous shrinkage is more pronounced at later ages. Copyright © 2011, American Concrete Institute. All rights reserved.
Investigation of Preparation and Shrinkage Characteristics of Multi-Source Solid Waste-Based Cementitious Materials

Abstract:Cement-stabilized macadam (CEM-SM) base layers on highways are prone to early shrinkage cracking in extremely cold and arid regions, mainly caused by the large drying shrinkage of traditional cement-stabilized base materials. A multi-component solid waste cementitious material (SWCM) was designed based on the response surface method. The synergistic reaction mechanism of SWCM was analyzed using X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG). A shrinkage testing system was developed to evaluate the anti-cracking characteristics of stable macadam using multiple solid waste cementitious materials (SWCM-SM), and the strength growth law and frost resistance were analyzed. The results show that the Box–Behnken response surface model was used to obtain the optimal parameter combination for SWCM, including 60% slag, 30% steel slag, and 10% desulfurization gypsum. The compressive strength and flexural strength of SWCM-SM were 24.1% and 26.7% higher than those of CEM-SM after curing 180 days. The frost resistance of SWCM-SM was basically equivalent to that of CEM-SM, and the dry shrinkage strain of SWCM-SM was reduced by 30.7% compared to CEM-SM. It can be concluded that steel slag and desulfurization gypsum stimulate the hydration reaction of slag, thereby improving the bonding strength. Compared to CEM-SM, SWCM-SM exhibits slower hydration reaction and longer hydration duration, exhibiting characteristics of low early strength and high later strength. The early microstrain of the semi-rigid base layer is mainly caused by the occurrence of early water loss shrinkage, and the water loss rate of SWCM-SM is lower than that of CEM-SM. This study concludes that SWCM has good early crack resistance performance for stabilized crushed stones.

Abstract:In recent years more and more attention has been given to autogenous shrinkage due to the increasing use of high-performance concrete, which always contains supplementary materials. With the addition of supplementary materials—e.g., fly ash and blast furnace slag—internal relative humidity, chemical shrinkage and mechanical properties of cement paste will be affected. These properties significantly influence the autogenous shrinkage of cement paste. In this study, three supplementary materials—i.e., silica fume, fly ash and blast furnace slag—are investigated. Measurements of final setting time, internal relative humidity, chemical shrinkage, compressive strength and autogenous deformation of the cement pastes with and without supplementary materials are presented. Two water-binder ratios, 0.3 and 0.4, are considered. The effects of different supplementary materials on autogenous shrinkage of cement paste are discussed.

Abstract:<p>Shrinkage of concrete refers to the volumetric change of concrete due to cement hydration (i.e., self‐desiccation) and environmental drying (i.e., water evaporation). It creates dimensional instability and induces tensile stress when the concrete is restrained that may be large enough to cause cracking. The most fundamental way to mitigate concrete shrinkage is to decrease the shrinkage of cementitious paste in the mix design. Some major factors of concrete mix design affecting the shrinkage include water‐to‐cementitious material (W/CM) ratio, dosage of superplasticizer (SP), concrete strength, and cementitious paste volume (CPV). While the effects of concrete strength and CPV on shrinkage are straightforward, those of W/CM and SP are more complicated because they also affect the pore size and distribution that influence the moisture movement. In this paper, it is advocated to study the concrete shrinkage by its wet packing density (WPD). Considering that the shrinkage of concrete is associated with the moisture movement in capillary pores and that the WPD accounts for the void ratio in fresh concrete, it will be shown in this paper that the shrinkage can be correlated negatively to the WPD with the consideration of CPV. The paper thus provides a new insight to the interdependence amongst shrinkage, CPV, and WPD of concrete.</p>

Abstract:Abstract Calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement can be used as an alternative binder in concrete, partially or fully replacing ordinary Portland cement. While CSA cement considerably accelerates the mechanical properties development, the rapid evolution of the microstructure together with the high water demand cause rapid and large volume changes at early ages. As volume changes may lead to early-age cracking, measures to reduce them may be required In this paper, autogenous and drying shrinkage are studied in mortars prepared with Portland cement, CSA cement or a 50/50 blend as binder. Very fast self-desiccation and high autogenous shrinkage of the CSA-based mortar were observed compared to the mortar made with Portland cement. On the other hand, the early-age volume changes can be limited if a blend of the two cements is used. The blended system revealed a bi-modal trend in the evolution of self-desiccation and autogenous shrinkage, in which the initial fast self-desiccation and shrinkage enter the dormant phase after the first couple of days and again start after about 28 days.

Abstract:Calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cements are a promising alternative to Portland clinker, however, a thorough understanding of their properties is needed for their broader use in the industry. One of the topics that requires a good understanding is the effect of the w/c ratio on the properties of CSA cements. To this end, the aim of this paper was to provide research into the effects of a w/c ratio in the range of 0.45–0.6 on the properties of fresh and hardened CSA pastes and mortars. For fresh mortars, consistency and setting time, as well as plastic shrinkage tests, were conducted, and were complemented by hydration heat tests, carried out on pastes. For hardened mortars, tests of compressive and flexural strength and dry shrinkage, as well as SEM photography, were conducted. It was found that, regardless of a higher hydration rate, the increase in w/c ratio decreased flexural and compressive strength, as well as shrinkage, while increasing consistency, setting time, and hydration heat. Also observed was a significant decrease in strength between 3 and 7 days of curing in mortars with a high w/c ratio. It can be concluded that, regardless of the hydration rate, low w/c ratios in CSA mortars provide better properties than high w/c ratios.

Abstract:Effect of internal curing on shrinkage of calcium sulfoaluminate cement (CSA) concrete in both sealed condition and dry/wet cycles was studied using four CSA concretes with water-to-binder ratios (w/b) of 0.62, 0.42, 0.30, 0.24 respectively corresponding to strength grade of CSA30, CSA50, CSA80, CSA100, and ceramsite as internal curing agent. Results indicate that lower w/b results in higher autogenous shrinkage and the total shrinkage of CSA100 at age of 14d under sealed condition reaches as high as 550 ga, while this figure is only 100 ga for CSA30. The concrete with lower w/b exhibits higher deformation amplitude during subsequent dry-wet cycles and the dimensional variations during dry-wet cycles for CAS100 and CSA30 are respectively 80 ga and 30 ga. It is found internal curing can effectively reduce both the autogenous shrinkage and the deformation amplitude during dry-wet cycles, especially for the concrete with lower w/b. The internally cured CSA100 exhibits 14d total shrinkage under sealed condition of 100 ga and the deformation amplitude during the subsequent three dry-wet cycles of 25 ga, with reduction rate of respectively 82% and 69% compared to its normally cured counterpart. Moreover, shrinkage stress of concrete cured for 3d under sealed condition and subsequently for 25d under drying condition was calculated based on ring test results considering creep behavior. It is shown that for CSA100 at Day 28, the shrinkage stress of the inner surface in the ring test is 2.32 MPa while this figure greatly drops to 0.43 MPa for its internally cured counterpart.

Abstract:Shrinkage strain, compressive strength and water absorption of high performance concrete (HPC) are estimated to high accuracy with linear equations using the w/c ratio and paste volume as variables. A paste volume reduction, thus an increase in coarse aggregate fraction, improves the HPC properties. These changes most likely result from: 1) adsorption of water on a greater surface of aggregate, leading to bulk paste desiccation and densifying and reduction in actual w/c ratio and width of aggregate-cement paste interfacial transition zone; 2) beneficial influence of larger volume of coarse aggregates produced from rocks of high strength and low water absorption.
