Abstract:An inverse source estimation method is proposed to reconstruct emission rates using local air concentration sampling data. It involves the nonlinear least squares-based ensemble four-dimensional variational data assimilation (NLS-4DVar) algorithm and a transfer coefficient matrix (TCM) created using FLEXPART, a Lagrangian atmospheric dispersion model. The method was tested by twin experiments and experiments with actual Cs-137 concentrations measured around the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP). Emission rates can be reconstructed sequentially with the progression of a nuclear accident, which is important in the response to a nuclear emergency. With pseudo observations generated continuously, most of the emission rates were estimated accurately, except under conditions when the wind blew off land toward the sea and at extremely slow wind speeds near the FDNPP. Because of the long duration of accidents and variability in meteorological fields, monitoring networks composed of land stations only in a local area are unable to provide enough information to support an emergency response. The errors in the estimation compared to the real observations from the FDNPP nuclear accident stemmed from a shortage of observations, lack of data control, and an inadequate atmospheric dispersion model without improvement and appropriate meteorological data. The proposed method should be developed further to meet the requirements of a nuclear emergency response.

Abstract:WH I LEthe emergence of drug-resistant bacilli never assumed the proportions which were sometimes so solemnly predicted in the early days of antibiotics, the spectre of resistance has been a persistent attendant at the bedside particularly in tuberculosis where the duration of therapy is measured in months rather than days and the 'secondline' drugs so far have failed to be as effective generally as in the relatively short-term, acute infections unresponsive to standard treatment. For the clinician the first laboratory reports on drug-resistance were not calculated to inspire confidence. Apart from adding another 3 weeks to a definitive bacteriological diagnosis which already took 6, all too often there was the paradox of the patient with the completely resistant infection doing as well and sometimes even better, than the one with the fully sensitive bacillus. Today this has changed. Improved and standardised laboratory techniques have secured an appropriate place for the sensitivity report in the planning of the regimen and the formulation of the prognosis; although not to the extent that the treatment of the confirmed sputum-positive patient can ever be delayed until the results of testing are known. Where the condition is chronic and the standard drugs have previously been used, it is generally possible to select a suitable combination from the 'second-line' range comprising pyrazinamide, viomycin, cycloserine, kanamycin, tetracycline and thiacetazone; and still be able to ring the changes at a later date. When the main aim is early sputum conversion-a matter of some importance among the hard core of non-cooperative patients-a combination of even 5 drugs is possible and appears to be fairly well tolerated according to Lees (1964). Inverse modeling of the 137Cs source term of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident constrained by a deposition map monitored by aircraft

Abstract:The amount of 137Cs released by the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident of 11 March 2011 was inversely estimated by integrating an atmospheric dispersion model, an a priori source term, and map of deposition recorded by aircraft. An a posteriori source term refined finer (hourly) variations comparing with the a priori term, and estimated 137Cs released 11 March to 2 April to be 8.12 PBq. Although time series of the a posteriori source term was generally similar to those of the a priori source term, notable modifications were found in the periods when the a posteriori source term was well-constrained by the observations. Spatial pattern of 137Cs deposition with the a posteriori source term showed better agreement with the 137Cs deposition monitored by aircraft. The a posteriori source term increased 137Cs deposition in the Naka-dori region (the central part of Fukushima Prefecture) by 32.9%, and considerably improved the underestimated a priori 137Cs deposition. Observed values of deposition measured at 16 stations and surface atmospheric concentrations collected on a filter tape of suspended particulate matter were used for validation of the a posteriori results. A great improvement was found in surface atmospheric concentration on 15 March; the a posteriori source term reduced root mean square error, normalized mean error, and normalized mean bias by 13.4, 22.3, and 92.0% for the hourly values, respectively. However, limited improvements were observed in some periods and areas due to the difficulty in simulating accurate wind fields and the lack of the observational constraints.
Spatiotemporal variation of radionuclide dispersion from nuclear power plant accidents using FLEXPART mini-ensemble modeling

Abstract:We investigate the spatiotemporal distribution of the radionuclides including iodine-131 ( 131 I) and cesium-137 ( 137 Cs), transported to Qatar from fictitious accidents at the upwind Barakah nuclear power plant (B-NPP) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). To model the dispersion of radionuclides, we use the Lagrangian particle–air parcel dispersion model FLEXible PARTicle (FLEXPART) and FLEXPART coupled with the Weather Research and Forecasting model (FLEXPART–WRF). A four-member mini-ensemble of meteorological inputs is used to investigate the impact of meteorological inputs on the radionuclide dispersion modeling. The mini-ensemble includes one forecast dataset (Global Forecast System, GFS) and three (re)analysis datasets (native-resolution and downscaled NCEP final analysis – FNL, as well as downscaled ERA5). Additionally, we explore the sensitivity of the radionuclide dispersion simulations to variations in the turbulence schemes, as well as the temporal and vertical emission profiles, and the location of emission sources. According to the simulated age spectrum of the Lagrangian particles, radionuclides enter southern Qatar about 20 to 30 h after release. Most of the radionuclide deposition in the study area occurs within 80 h after release. The most populated areas of Qatar coincide with moderate 131 I concentrations and 137 Cs deposition, while uninhabited areas in southern Qatar receive the highest amounts. A larger number of long-lived particles is found in the FNL-based simulations, which is interpreted as a greater dispersion of particles at a greater distance from the emission location. The highest simulated 131 I and 137 Cs deposition shows a pronounced spatiotemporal pattern. The largest impacts are found in the south and southeast of Qatar, during the early daytime development of the boundary layer, and during the cold period of the year. The results show remarkable differences in the spatiotemporal distribution of 131 I and 137 Cs simulations based on the FNL and GFS datasets, which share a common base meteorological model. As part of a sensitivity analysis involving different model setups, changing the emission point from B-NPP to Bushehr NPP (Bu-NPP) results in a reduced transfer of radioactive materials to Qatar, except in the spring season. Bu-NPP simulations reveal distinct spatial patterns, with peak 131 I concentrations and 137 Cs deposition observed in northern and eastern Qatar during winter and spring.

Abstract:The latest advancements in nuclear power, namely the Generation IV (Gen IV) reactor design, have been successfully chosen in numerous countries. These cutting-edge reactor designs boast superior safety and increased fuel efficiency compared to their predecessors. Among the Gen IV designs is the sodium-cooled fast breeder reactor, and to substantiate the safety assertions, HYSPLIT (Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory) dispersion modeling evolved by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will be employed to scrutinize the potential consequences of an accident. In this context, the analysis focuses on the 1250 MWt/500 MWe sodium-cooled fast breeder reactor (SFR) and its partial fuel melt accident, considering the crucial radioactive reduction factor. Despite existing studies on the consequences of SFR accidents, these studies need to pay more attention to the significance of the radiation reduction factor. This factor is paramount in accurately calculating dose outcomes, as not all radioactive materials can disperse freely within structures, thereby reducing inhalation and cloud shine doses. Furthermore, this investigation underscores the impact of meteorological data and dispersion model input parameters, such as release heights of radioactive materials and measured air concentration heights, on the results of atmospheric dispersion models. Hence, uncertainties in dispersion models arise due to the variability in these factors. The HYSPLIT dispersion model estimates a cumulative dose of 1.65 rem (0.0165 Sv) for a partial fuel melt scenario. The research reveals a maximum dose of approximately 1.8 rem (0.018 Sv) within a 24-hour period, indicating compliance with NRC limitations for Indian fast reactor accident consequences.

Abstract:An intercomparison of atmospheric dispersion models has been carried out for a hypothetical accident occurring in a nuclear power plant in the center of Spain. The accident consisted of a steam generator tube rupture, and two radionuclides have been considered for the exercise: 137-Cs and 131-I. Meteorological conditions and radionuclide release rates were supplied. Models provided deposition maps, timeintegrated concentrations in air and arrival times of the plumes to specific locations. The effect of the meteorological conditions used in the modelling was clear, with different behavior of the plume with neutral stability vs. stable conditions. The predicted arrival times of the plume at specific locations showed much less variability than deposition and air concentrations. This variability in part reflects the uncertainties inherent in atmospheric dispersion modelling and in the selection of parameter values, such as deposition velocities or diffusivities.
Local Atmospheric Transport Behaviors of Representative Radionuclides During the Fukushima Accident: A 200-M-resolution Cross-Scale Study from Site to 20 Km

Abstract:Modeling of local atmospheric radionuclide transport is essential for nuclear emergency response. However, very few studies of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant (FDNPP) accident have focused on this topic because of the complex meteorology and the cross-scale transport behaviors from the site to 20 km of the FDNPP. In this study, both the local meteorology and transport behaviors were investigated at high resolution (200 m) using ensembles of different meteorology and models. Four wind fields calculated from onsite observations and three regional-scale meteorological fields (i.e., the 1-km ECMWF, 3-km and 1-km NHM-LETKF), and two transport models: the RIMPUFF Lagrangian puff model and the SPRAY particle model were considered and combined with each other. These eight simulations and their ensemble mean were analyzed based on onsite observations of wind and gamma dose rates, and local-scale observations of 137Cs concentration. Results revealed that at the site, the Onsite wind field which captured the frequently changing wind, best reproduced the onsite gamma dose rates with the grid resolution of 200 m. At the local scale (up to 20 km), the observations present a smoother temporal change. The wind fields assimilated with Japanese domestic observations presented advantageous performance, and the 1-km NHM-LETKF achieved the best score of the factor of 5 metric of 0.49 for the simulated 137Cs concentration. The SPRAY coupled with the three-dimensional (3D) convolution method and RIMPUFF showed better performance in simulating the onsite gamma dose rate and the local-scale concentration, respectively. The ensemble mean achieved robust metrics, better simulated the baseline of onsite gamma dose rates, and repro-duced more peaks of local-scale concentration at the expense of peak value deviation.

Atmospheric dispersion modeling for an accidental release from a SLOWPOKE-2 research reactor: a case study

Abstract:Atmospheric dispersion modeling was performed for a postulated design basis accident at a SLOWPOKE research reactor. The MCNP-5 computer code was used to estimate the neutron flux spectrum which was then used in the ORIGEN-S code to perform core depletion calculations and determine the radiological source term. The HotSpot health physics code was then used to model the atmospheric transport of the radioactive material released to estimate the resulting doses to the population downwind of the reactor. The highest total effective dose (TED) for a release from the reactor's exhaust stack in predominant meteorological conditions, stability class C, was 0.37 mSv, while a maximum TED of 4.29 mSv was estimated for a release at ground level. Ground deposition was estimated to be 3900 kBq/m2. It was shown that any hypothetical release of radioactive material resulting from such an accident would have no significant adverse effect on the municipal water reservoir close to the reactor.

Abstract:Dual-process theories have been proposed to explain normative and heuristic responses to reasoning and decision-making problems. Standard unitary and dual-process theories predict that normative responses should increase with age. However, research has focused recently on exceptions to this standard pattern, including developmental increases in heuristic or intuitive responses. Developmental trends for normative and heuristic responses were investigated for 2 kinds of causal reasoning (if-only and covariation) problems in 2 experiments. To investigate the role of superstitious thinking in these developmental trends, in both experiments a superstitious element was added to the problem solved by half the participants. In the first experiment, 90 fifth graders, 99 seventh graders, and 153 adults responded to an if-only problem. Children performed better than adults, with normative responses decreasing and heuristic responses increasing with age. A superstitious jinx intended to reduce heuristic responses had little effect for all age groups. In the second experiment, 276 fifth graders, 344 seventh graders, and 90 adults responded to a covariation-detection problem. When win-loss ratios were equal, adults performed better than children, with normative responses increasing and heuristic responses decreasing with age. When win-loss ratios were strikingly different, however, even the youngest children were able to solve the problems correctly; participants of all ages responded about equally well. When the normative response required recognizing that a good-luck ritual led to better team performance, participants in all age groups responded skeptically that the ritual had no effect, illustrating belief bias. These results are discussed in terms of dual-process theories and the development of heuristic (or intuitive) and analytical processes.

Abstract:Numerical atmospheric dispersion models (ADMs) are used for predicting the health and environmental consequences of nuclear accidents in order to anticipate countermeasures necessary to protect the populations. However, these simulations suffer from significant uncertainties, arising in particular from input data: weather conditions and source term. Meteorological ensembles are already used operationally to characterize uncertainties in weather predictions. Combined with dispersion models, these ensembles produce different scenarios of radionuclide dispersion, called "members", representative of the variety of possible forecasts. In this study, the fine-scale operational weather ensemble AROME-EPS (Applications of Research to Operations at Mesoscale-Ensemble Prediction System) from Météo-France is coupled with the Gaussian puff model pX developed by the IRSN (French Institute for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety). The source term data are provided at 10 min resolution by the Orano La Hague reprocessing plant (RP) that regularly discharges 85 Kr during the spent nuclear fuel reprocessing process. In addition, a continuous measurement campaign of 85 Kr air concentration was recently conducted by the Laboratory of Radioecology in Cherbourg (LRC) of the IRSN, within 20 km of the RP in the North-Cotentin peninsula, and is used for model evaluation.

Abstract:Atmospheric dispersion models play an important role in nuclear power plant accident management. A reliable estimation of radioactive material distribution in short range (about 50 km) is in urgent need for population sheltering and evacuation planning. However, the meteorological data and the source term which greatly influence the accuracy of the atmospheric dispersion models are usually poorly known at the early phase of the emergency. In this study, a modified ensemble Kalman filter data assimilation method in conjunction with a Lagrangian puff-model is proposed to simultaneously improve the model prediction and reconstruct the source terms for short range atmospheric dispersion using the off-site environmental monitoring data. Four main uncertainty parameters are considered: source release rate, plume rise height, wind speed and wind direction. Twin experiments show that the method effectively improves the predicted concentration distribution, and the temporal profiles of source release rate and plume rise height are also successfully reconstructed. Moreover, the time lag in the response of ensemble Kalman filter is shortened. The method proposed here can be a useful tool not only in the nuclear power plant accident emergency management but also in other similar situation where hazardous material is released into the atmosphere.
Short-term emergency response planning and risk assessment via an integrated modeling system for nuclear power plants in complex terrain

Abstract:Short-term predictions of potential impacts from accidental release of various radionuclides at nuclear power plants are acutely needed, especially after the Fukushima accident in Japan. An integrated modeling system that provides expert services to assess the consequences of accidental or intentional releases of radioactive materials to the atmosphere has received wide attention. These scenarios can be initiated either by accident due to human, software, or mechanical failures, or from intentional acts such as sabotage and radiological dispersal devices. Stringent action might be required just minutes after the occurrence of accidental or intentional release. To fulfill the basic functions of emergency preparedness and response systems, previous studies seldom consider the suitability of air pollutant dispersion models or the connectivity between source term, dispersion, and exposure assessment models in a holistic context for decision support. Therefore, the Gaussian plume and puff models, which are only suitable for illustrating neutral air pollutants in flat terrain conditional to limited meteorological situations, are frequently used to predict the impact from accidental release of industrial sources. In situations with complex terrain or special meteorological conditions, the proposing emergency response actions might be questionable and even intractable to decisionmakers responsible for maintaining public health and environmental quality. This study is a preliminary effort to integrate the source term, dispersion, and exposure assessment models into a Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) to tackle the complex issues for short-term emergency response planning and risk assessment at nuclear power plants. Through a series model screening procedures, we found that the diagnostic (objective) wind field model with the aid of sufficient on-site meteorological monitoring data was the most applicable model to promptly address the trend of local wind field patterns. However, most of the hazardous materials being released into the environment from nuclear power plants are not neutral pollutants, so the particle and multi-segment puff models can be regarded as the most suitable models to incorporate into the output of the diagnostic wind field model in a modern emergency preparedness and response system. The proposed SDSS illustrates the state-of-the-art system design based on the situation of complex terrain in South Taiwan. This system design of SDSS with 3-dimensional animation capability using a tailored source term model in connection with ArcView® Geographical Information System map layers and remote sensing images is useful for meeting the design goal of nuclear power plants located in complex terrain.

Estimation of the dispersion of an accidental release of radionuclides and toxic materials based on weather type classification

Abstract:We investigate the influence of the regional-scale weather types on the atmospheric dispersion processes of the air pollutants originated from point sources. Hypothetical accidents were simulated with two different dispersion models. During a year’s test period, the 6-h emission of a radionuclide from the Paks Nuclear Power Plant (Paks NPP, Hungary) was assumed every day and the transport and deposition of the radionuclide was simulated by the Eulerian TREX dispersion model over the Central European region. In addition, the ALOHA Gaussian air dispersion model was also used for the local environment of the Paks NPP to simulate hypothetical hourly releases of ammonia during a 10-year period. During both types of model simulations, the dispersion of the plume for each time was analysed and tested with consideration of 13 circulation types corresponding to daily weather patterns over the Carpathian Basin. There are significant correlations between circulation types and plume directions and structures both in local and regional scales. The daily circulation pattern can be easily obtained from weather analyses; the expected size and direction of polluted area after an accidental release can be quickly estimated even before an accident occurs. However, this fast method cannot replace or neglect dispersion model simulations. It gives a ‘first guess’ and a fast estimation on the direction of the plume and can provide sufficient information for decision-making strategies.

Abstract:Abstract. The atmospheric transport and ground deposition of radioactive isotopes 131I and 137Cs during and after the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident (March 2011) are investigated using the Weather Research and Forecasting-Chemistry (WRF-Chem) model. The aim is to assess the skill of WRF in simulating these processes and the sensitivity of the model's performance to various parameterizations of unresolved physics. The WRF-Chem model is first upgraded by implementing a radioactive decay term into the advection–diffusion solver and adding three parameterizations for dry deposition and two parameterizations for wet deposition. Different microphysics and horizontal turbulent diffusion schemes are then tested for their ability to reproduce observed meteorological conditions. Subsequently, the influence of emission characteristics (including the emission rate, the gas partitioning of 131I and the size distribution of 137Cs) on the simulated transport and deposition is examined. The results show that the model can predict the wind fields and rainfall realistically and that the ground deposition of the radionuclides can also be captured reasonably well. The modeled precipitation is largely influenced by the microphysics schemes, while the influence of the horizontal diffusion schemes on the wind fields is subtle. However, the ground deposition of radionuclides is sensitive to both horizontal diffusion schemes and microphysical schemes. Wet deposition dominated over dry deposition at most of the observation stations, but not at all locations in the simulated domain. To assess the sensitivity of the total daily deposition to all of the model physics and inputs, the averaged absolute value of the difference (AAD) is proposed. Based on AAD, the total deposition is mainly influenced by the emission rate for both 131I and 137Cs; while it is not sensitive to the dry deposition parameterizations since the dry deposition is just a minor fraction of the total deposition. Moreover, for 131I, the deposition is moderately sensitive (AAD between 10 and 40% between different runs) to the microphysics schemes, the horizontal diffusion schemes, gas-partitioning and wet deposition parameterizations. For 137Cs, the deposition is very sensitive (AAD exceeding 40% between different runs) to the microphysics schemes and wet deposition parameterizations, but moderately sensitive to the horizontal diffusion schemes and the size distribution.

However, the capability of the local-scale atmospheric dispersion model hasn’t been discussed in detail for the Fukushima accident. In this paper, the local-scale modeling of radionuclides following the Fukushima accident was investigated with the combination of the wind diagnosed model SWIFT and the radionuclide transport model RIMPUFF. The coarse input wind field of SWIFT is prepared with WRF using the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Meteorological data. The SWIFT-diagnosed wind field was used to drive RIMPUFF for calculating the dispersion of radionuclides and gamma dose rates around the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) site. The diagnostic wind fields were validated to the on-site meteorological observations, whereas the dispersion and gamma dose rates were validated the onsite gamma dose rate monitoring data and the observations of suspended particulate m? near the FDNPP. The plume patterns were also analyzed to help understand the transport behaviour of the radionuclides. The validation demonstrates that, with the 1km-resolved ECMWF meteorological data, SWIFT fairly reproduces the wind field. The speed is slightly overestimated, with a Normalized Mean Squared Error (NMSE) below 6. The wind direction is well simulated at some specific moments, which is critical for reproducing some peaks of the dose rates. However, RIMPUFF underestimates the dose rates around the FDNPP, partly because of the overestimated wind speed. The concentration simulations better agree with observations in the Naraha station than Futaba station, with the Fractional Bias (FB) under 0.3 and NMSE under 6 at the Naraha station.
Source Term Estimation in Nuclear Accidents Using 4d Variational Data Assimilation for Heterologous Atmospheric Condition

Abstract:The source information of the radionuclide release in nuclear accidents is a. key issue of the nuclear emergency response. One way to estimate the source information is by inversing the radionuclide transportation process based on environment radiation monitoring data. The advantage of this method is that the required data are easy to obtain in accident. But it is vulnerable to large uncertainties in both data and transport model. To solve the problem, a source term estimation method based on four-dimensional variational (4DVAR) data assimilation technique was proposed for source term estimation in this study. The proposed method couples 4DVAR with the RIMPUFF air dispersion model. It formulates the inverse modelling of source term estimation as an optimization problem that is trying to find an optimal balance between real observation data and the background field. The advantage of this method is that the radionuclide transport in every time step is included in data assimilation and the result is global optimum in the whole assimilation period. The gradient for cost function is calculated by the backward integration of the adjoint model. Practical imperfectness of measurement were considered and integrated into the cost function. The proposed method was verified using numerical simulation for both homogeneous and heterologous atmospheric condition. The performance of the source term estimation method was also investigated with respect to different release profile, wind speed and atmospheric stability class. The simulation results demonstrate that the estimate matches the true release status well for both homogeneous and heterologous wind field. Also, the experimental results show that the proposed method has strong robustness to wind speed and atmospheric stability.

Abstract:In this paper, some numerical simulation studies on long distance transport of hazard materials from an accident of a nuclear powerstation have been showed with the Hysplit-4 model of Air Resource Laboratory, NOAA, USA. Two kinds of studies have been done : 1) A verification study shows that the Hysplit-4 model has successfully simulated the long distance transport process of radioactivity materials from Chenobyl accident site in 1986 to Munich. 2) the focus of attention of the differences of the geographic distribution of the radiactivity concentration fields between winter seasons and summer seasons has been made in case that the severe accident of Qingshan like Chenobyl would occur based on the historical meteorological fields in January or in July from 1992 to 2001. Furthermore, by making averaging of the simulated data of the concentration fields of cases separately in January or in in July, we obtain two groups of the geographic distribution of the concentration fields of hazard materials in 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours. The results show us that the effect region and the intensity of hazard materials are larger in winter than in summer.
Improving the estimation of direct release rates and transport processes from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident using higher-resolution oceanic dispersion model

Abstract:A series of accidents at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (F1NPS), following the 11 March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, resulted in the release of radioactive substances into the ocean. In particular, the release of large amounts of radioactive caesium has damaged the fishing industry, leading to voluntary restrictions on fishing and shipping. Oceanic dispersion simulations based on estimates of the pathways and fluxes of radioactive materials provide useful information for assessing the environmental impacts and formulating measures to mitigate the effects of the accident. For the direct release rate from the F1NPS site, an estimation method was developed using the results from nearby monitoring, and the seawater exchange rate was estimated in target volume using a numerical simulation. However, the influence of volume on the seawater exchange rate was not considered. Appropriate volumes must be considered when estimating the effects of future accidents. In addition, the directional coastal transport was underestimated in the simulations of the F1NPS accident because of the low resolution. To estimate the pathways and fluxes of radioactive material to the ocean and understand the distribution of the concentration of radioactive material based on ocean dispersion simulations, a study was conducted using a higher-resolution model. The horizontal resolution of the conventional ocean dispersion model Regional Ocean Modelling System (ROMS), was increased from 1 km to 200 m. The optimal settings of the seawater exchange rate were investigated, and the radioactive caesium transport process in the coastal direction was more accurately reflected. We found that the conventional volume for determining the seawater exchange rate, including the locations of release sources and observation points, is optimal. The validity of this finding was confirmed using experimental equations from previous oceanic tracer release experiments. To estimate future release rates, it an appropriate volume must be defined, for example, depending on the distance between the locations of the release sources and the observation point. In addition, improvements in the accuracy of the simulation of the coastal transport process were observed owing to the higher resolution, which increased reproducibility. However, with a horizontal resolution of 200 m, problems with repeatability near the harbours arose. A higher resolution, achieved using nesting or other methods, would be desirable to deal with releases smaller than those in the F1NPS accident.
