Abstract:Integrating conventional optics into compact nanostructured surfaces is the goal of flat optics. Despite the enormous progress of this technology, there are still critical challenges for real world applications due to a limited efficiency in the visible, on average lower than $60\%$, which originates by absorption losses in wavelength thick ($\approx 500$nm) structures. Another issue is the realization of on-demand optical components for controlling vectorial light at visible frequencies simultaneously in both reflection and transmission, and with a predetermined wavefront shape. In this work, we developed an inverse design approach that allows the realization of highly efficient (up to $99\%$) ultra-flat (down to $50$nm thick) optics for vectorial light control and broadband input-output responses on a desired wavefront shape. The approach leverages on a hidden network of universal approximators, which exist in the physical layer of suitably engineered semiconductor nanostructures. Near unity performance results from the ultra-flat nature of these surfaces, which reduces absorption losses to almost negligible values. Experimentally, we discuss polarizing beam splitters, comparing their performances with the best results obtained from both direct and inverse design techniques, and new flat-optics components represented by dichroic mirrors and the basic unit of a flat optics display that creates full colors by using only two sub-pixels, overcoming the limitations of conventional LCD/OLED technologies that require three sub-pixels for each composite color. Our devices are manufactured with a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) compatible process, making them scalable for mass production at inexpensive costs.

Versatile Optical Beam Routers Based on Inversely Designed Supercell Metagratings

Abstract:Metagratings manipulating the wavefront with a subwavelength volume have been widely explored in recent years for their potential applications in optical beam routers, such as laser beam splitters and combiners. Current metagratings are hampered from practical beam rerouting due to inhibitive computational load of engineering design and expensive nanofabrication cost. In this work, we apply the emerging concept of supercell metagratings, which arranges random binary gratings of a unit cell in a one-dimensional periodicity, to simplify such design and fabrication processes. A high-performance inverse design framework for the supercell gratings is proposed. In such a framework, we use coupled wave algorithm as a fast-converging electromagnetic solver for the forward calculation and particle swarm optimization algorithm for the backward optimization. By manipulating the building blocks of a unit cell, specific diffraction orders of supercell gratings can be intentionally strengthened or eliminated. We finally realize high-efficiency, broadband and multi-functionality optical beam splitters and combiners both in visible and near-infrared regimes. We envision that the proposed method offers an avenue towards the mass production realization of flat optics.
Off-axis metasurfaces for folded flat optics

Abstract:The overall size of an optical system is limited by the volume of the components and the internal optical path length. To reach the limits of miniaturization, it is possible to reduce both component volume and path length by combining the concepts of metasurface flat optics and folded optics. In addition to their subwavelength component thickness, metasurfaces enable bending conventional folded geometries off axis beyond the law of reflection. However, designing metasurfaces for highly off-axis illumination with visible light in combination with a high numerical aperture is non-trivial. In this case, traditional designs with gradient metasurfaces exhibit low diffraction efficiencies and require the use of deep-subwavelength, high-index, and high-aspect-ratio semiconductor nanostructures that preclude inexpensive, large-area nanofabrication. Here, we describe a design approach that enables the use of low-index (n ≈ 1.5), low-aspect ratio structures for off-axis metagratings that can redirect and focus visible light (λ = 532 nm) with near-unity efficiency. We show that fabricated optical elements offer a very large angle-of-view (110°) and lend themselves to scalable fabrication by nano-imprint lithography.
Beating bandwidth limits for large aperture broadband nano-optics

Abstract:Flat optics have been proposed as an attractive approach for the implementation of new imaging and sensing modalities to replace and augment refractive optics. However, chromatic aberrations impose fundamental limitations on diffractive flat optics. As such, true broadband high-quality imaging has thus far been out of reach for low f-number, large aperture, flat optics. In this work, we overcome these intrinsic fundamental limitations, achieving broadband imaging in the visible wavelength range with a flat meta-optic, co-designed with computational reconstruction. We derive the necessary conditions for a broadband, 1 cm aperture, f/2 flat optic, with a diagonal field of view of 30° and an average system MTF contrast of 30% or larger for a spatial frequency of 100 lp/mm in the visible band (> 50 % for 70 lp/mm and below). Finally, we use a coaxial, dual-aperture system to train the broadband imaging meta-optic with a learned reconstruction method operating on pair-wise captured imaging data. Fundamentally, our work challenges the entrenched belief of the inability of capturing high-quality, full-color images using a single large aperture meta-optic.

Abstract:Metasurface-based optical elements enable abrupt wavefront engineering by locally controlling the properties (amplitude, phase, etc.) of the incident illumination. They hold great potential to promote a new generation of wearable devices and thin optical systems for imaging and sensing. To date, most of the existing metasurface designs rely on highaspect-ratio nanostructures, with a thickness close to or even higher than the wavelength. There has been an increasing demand to reduce the metasurface thickness and nanostructure aspect-ratio, in order to facilitate the fabrication compatibility and integration with electronics and dynamic tunable platforms. Here we demonstrate ultrathin (~ 1/5 of the wavelength) transmissive metalenses for the visible light, using two different approaches of either amplitude or phase modulation. For amplitude modulation, we developed a digital transmission coding scheme that allows manipulation of multiple wavelengths without increasing the thickness or complexity of the structural elements. In order to improve the optical efficiency, phase modulation is necessary, but the design is more challenging. Because the nanoresonators are electromagnetically coupled with each other, compared with high-aspect-ratio nanostructures with wave-guiding confinement. To solve this problem, we developed an inverse design strategy using machine learning. We employ evolutionary algorithms interfaced with Finite-Difference Time-Domain solvers, which not only mimic natural selection in order to determine the optimal arrangement of nanoresonators to achieve the desired target optical functions, but also consider and benefit from the strong interactions between nanoresonators to improve the performance. The machine learning designs significantly improve the focusing efficiency, approximately double of the conventional human designs.
Low-loss Metasurface Optics Down to the Deep Ultraviolet Region.

Abstract:Shrinking conventional optical systems to chip-scale dimensions will benefit custom applications in imaging, displaying, sensing, spectroscopy, and metrology. Towards this goal, metasurfaces-planar arrays of subwavelength electromagnetic structures that collectively mimic the functionality of thicker conventional optical elements-have been exploited at frequencies ranging from the microwave range up to the visible range. Here, we demonstrate high-performance metasurface optical components that operate at ultraviolet wavelengths, including wavelengths down to the record-short deep ultraviolet range, and perform representative wavefront shaping functions, namely, high-numerical-aperture lensing, accelerating beam generation, and hologram projection. The constituent nanostructured elements of the metasurfaces are formed of hafnium oxide-a loss-less, high-refractive-index dielectric material deposited using low-temperature atomic layer deposition and patterned using high-aspect-ratio Damascene lithography. This study opens the way towards low-form factor, multifunctional ultraviolet nanophotonic platforms based on flat optical components, enabling diverse applications including lithography, imaging, spectroscopy, and quantum information processing.

Abstract:Metasurface-based optical elements have the ability to shape wavefronts by locally changing the properties of incident illumination. They hold great potential to promote a new generation of wearable devices and thin optical systems for imaging and sensing. However, due to the diffractive nature of these metasurfaces, chromatic aberration represents a critical challenge toward practical implementations, especially for the visible spectrum. Existing solutions for multi-wavelength meta-optics inevitably increase the device thickness and system complexity, similar to the conventional refractive and diffractive counterparts. They are also limited to polarization sensitive lenses with a small size and numerical aperture (NA). In this manuscript, we present the design of single-layer multi-wavelength metasurfaces using ultrathin dielectric resonators (thickness ≪ wavelength) as structural elements. The electromagnetic response of these resonators can be tailored by the in-plane geometrical parameters and used to manipulate the transmitted light. We introduce a digital transmission modulation scheme which enables opportunities to design multi-wavelength optics beyond conventional binary diffractive optics. The design versatility of our approach is demonstrated by polarization-independent achromatic metalenses with a larger lens size and larger NA than existing approaches. The simplicity of the design and fabrication process makes these ultrathin metasurfaces good candidates for building flat optical elements that can be easily integrated onto CMOS electronics and MEMS devices.

Abstract:Optical metasurfaces have developed as a breakthrough concept for advanced wave-front engineering enabled by subwavelength resonant nanostructures. However, reflection and/or absorption losses as well as low polarisation-conversion efficiencies pose a fundamental obstacle for achieving high transmission efficiencies that are required for practical applications. Here we demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, highly efficient all-dielectric metasurfaces for near-infrared frequencies using arrays of silicon nanodisks as meta-atoms. We employ the main features of Huygens' sources, namely spectrally overlapping electric and magnetic dipole resonances of equal strength, to demonstrate Huygens' metasurfaces with a full transmission-phase coverage of 360 degrees and near-unity transmission, and we confirm experimentally full phase coverage combined with high efficiency in transmission. Based on these key properties, we show that all-dielectric Huygens' metasurfaces could become a new paradigm for flat optical devices, including beam-steering, beam-shaping, and focusing, as well as holography and dispersion control.

Low Contrast Dielectric Metasurface Optics

Abstract:The miniaturization of current image sensors is largely limited by the volume of the optical elements. Using a sub-wavelength patterned quasi-periodic structure, also known as a metasurface, one can build planar optical elements based on the principle of diffraction. However, it was believed that high refractive index materials are required for metasurface optics. Here, we show that one can employ the design principles of a metasurface even with low contrast materials, such as silicon nitride. We validate our theory by fabricating and experimentally characterizing several silicon nitride based lenses and vortex beam generators . The fabricated lenses achieved beam spots of less than 1 {\mu}m with numerical apertures as high as ~ 0.75. A transmission efficiency of 90% and focusing efficiency of 40% in the visible regime was observed. Our results pave the way towards building low-loss metasurface based optical elements at visible frequencies using low contrast materials.

Abstract:Over the past years, photonic metasurfaces have demonstrated their remarkable and diverse capabilities for achieving advanced control over light propagation by confining electromagnetic radiation within the deeply subwavelength thickness of these artificial films. Here, we demonstrate that metasurfaces also offer new unparalleled capabilities for decreasing the overall dimensions of integrated optical components and systems. We propose an original approach of embedding a metasurface inside one of the most fundamental optical elements -an optical cavity- to drastically scale-down the thickness of the optical cavity. We apply this methodology to design and implement a metasurfaces-based nano-cavity where the Fabry-Perot interferometric principle has been modified to reduce the cavity thickness below the conventional half-wavelength minimum. In addition, the nano-cavities with embedded metasurfaces can support independently tunable resonances at multiple bands. As a proof-of-concept, using nano-structured metasurfaces within 100-nm nano-cavities, we experimentally demonstrate high spatial resolution color filtering and spectral imaging. The proposed approach can be extrapolated to compact integrated optical systems on-a-chip such as VCSEL, high-resolution spatial light modulators, imaging spectroscopy systems, and bio-sensors.
Broadband Thermal Imaging using Meta-Optics

Abstract:Subwavelength diffractive optics known as meta-optics have demonstrated the potential to significantly miniaturize imaging systems. However, despite impressive demonstrations, most meta-optical imaging systems suffer from strong chromatic aberrations, limiting their utilities. Here, we employ inverse-design to create broadband meta-optics operating in the long-wave infrared (LWIR) regime (8 - 12 $\mu$m). Via a deep-learning assisted multi-scale differentiable framework that links meta-atoms to the phase, we maximize the wavelength-averaged volume under the modulation transfer function (MTF) of the meta-optics. Our design framework merges local phase-engineering via meta-atoms and global engineering of the scatterer within a single pipeline. We corroborate our design by fabricating and experimentally characterizing all-silicon LWIR meta-optics. Our engineered meta-optic is complemented by a simple computational backend that dramatically improves the quality of the captured image. We experimentally demonstrate a six-fold improvement of the wavelength-averaged Strehl ratio over the traditional hyperboloid metalens for broadband imaging.

Abstract:Flat optics foresees a new era of ultra-compact optical devices, where metasurfaces serve as the foundation. Conventional designs of metasurfaces start with a certain structure as the prototype, followed by an extensive parametric sweep to accommodate the requirements of phase and amplitude of the emerging light. Regardless of how computation-consuming the process is, a predefined structure can hardly realize the independent control over the polarization, frequency, and spatial channels, which hinders the potential of metasurfaces to be multifunctional. Besides, achieving complicated and multiple functions calls for designing a meta-optic system with multiple cascading layers of metasurfaces, which introduces super exponential complexity. In this work we present an artificial intelligence framework for designing multilayer meta-optic systems with multifunctional capabilities. We demonstrate examples of a polarization-multiplexed dual-functional beam generator, a second order differentiator for all-optical computation, and a space-polarization-wavelength multiplexed hologram. These examples are barely achievable by single-layer metasurfaces and unattainable by traditional design processes.
Micron-scale light structuring via flat nanodevices

Abstract:Miniaturized devices with multiple functionalities are exceedingly required in integrated optical systems. Flat nanostructures, named metasurfaces, provide fascinating boulevard for complex structuring and manipulation of light such as optical vortex generation, lensing, imaging, harmonic generation etc. at micron scale. Since, the performance of metal-based plasmonic metasurfaces is significantly limited by their optical absorption and losses, lossless dielectric materials (in the operational spectrum) provide decent alternative to attain higher efficiency. Here, a novel, polarization insensitive and highly efficient method for light structuring is demonstrated based on amorphous silicon (with subwavelength thickness of 400 nm) at an operational wavelength of 633 nm. The proposed phase gradient metasurface is based on circular cylindrical nanopillars of amorphous silicon exhibits two optical properties, the lensing and orbital angular momentum generation. The cylindrical nature of the pillar plays a pivotal role to make the overall structure as polarization insensitive. The proposed innovative methodology will provide an interesting road towards the development and realization of multi-functional ultrathin nanodevices which will find numerous applications in integrated photonics.

Abstract:Achieving broadband and multifunctional response through a single optical device is a highly sought-after capability for various applications like microscopy and optical imaging, which provide detailed morphological information of a targeted object. Traditional optical systems require a chain of elements to achieve such functionality, resulting in bulky systems hindering integration with modern photonics devices. Metasurfaces are exquisitely designed and exhibit unprecedented light-manipulation capability at the nanoscale, thus creating easy-to-integrate miniaturized photonic devices. Recently, broadband multifunctional metasurfaces with polarization’s degree of freedom have attracted considerable interest due to their exceptional ability of wavefront shaping, which may find their applications in imaging and data communication. However, realizing single-cell driven, highly efficient multifunctional metasurfaces operating over broadband wavelengths remains challenging. This study presents a unique helicity-dependent broadband multifunctional metasurface platform to manipulate visible light for futuristic imaging applications. The proposed platform can integrate multiple optical phenomena into a single-layered metadevice to generate several uncorrelated, spin-dependent responses across the targeted visible spectrum (470–650 nm). For proof of concept, we demonstrated several all-dielectric transmissive metadevices carrying various spin-multiplexed phase profiles, efficiently generating diffraction-limited focusing and structured light beams with different characteristics. Each designed metasurface was studied under selected visible wavelengths, and the diffracted light exhibited excellent and stable broadband performance. With the advantages of broadband multifunctional platform and miniaturized metadevices, the presented strategy may open new vistas for various applications, including biomedical imaging, optical interconnects, and microscopy.
Advancing Broadband Light Structuring Through Single-Size Nanostructured All-Dielectric Meta-Devices

Abstract:Traditional optical components and most artificially engineered structures (metamaterials) used for light manipulation are usually designed for narrow bandwidth and limited functionalities. Furthermore, bulkiness and inefficiency limit their application for integrated devices. Metasurfaces, the ultracompact counterpart of bulky metamaterials, exhibit an unprecedented ability to manipulate incident electromagnetic waves at a micron scale. Metasurfaces have emerged as promising candidates for light structuring and its potential applications, ranging from high-capacity data communication to particle manipulation. Despite significant advancement in metasurfaces, realizing high-performance metadevices exhibiting a broadband light manipulation capability is still challenging due to the material's intrinsic nature and lack of a more straightforward design methodology. Here, we demonstrated a broadband single-cell driven all-dielectric metadevice platform to realize high-performance phase modulation for light structuring over the broad visible spectrum 475−650nm. The building block consists of an intelligently optimized nanoantenna made of unique zinc sulfide material that employs the PB phase to realize single-layered broadband metadevices for structured light generation, ensuring a decent average transmission efficiency ηavg=79.9% over the intended band. To prove the concept, we designed numerous metadevices for structured light generation and numerically investigated each under the illumination of selected visible wavelengths. We envisioned that the presented work could accelerate real-life applications such as high-resolution color imaging, optical communication and sensing, quantum information processing, and micromanipulation.
Inverse design of broadband and reconfigurable meta-optics

Abstract:By exploiting the generalized form of Snell’s law, metasurfaces afford optical engineers a tremendous increase in degrees of design freedom compared to conventional optical components. These “meta-optics” can achieve unprecedented levels of performance through engineered wavelength-, angular-, and polarization-dependent responses which can be tailored by arranging subwavelength unit cells, or meta-atoms, in an intelligent way. Moreover, these metaatoms can be constructed from phase change materials which give the added flexibility of realizing reconfigurable metaoptics. Devices such as achromatic flat lenses and non-mechanical zoom lenses are becoming a reality through the advent of metasurface-augmented optical systems. However, achieving high-performance meta-optics relies heavily on proper meta-atom design. This challenge is best overcome through the use of advanced inverse-design tools and state-ofthe- art optimization algorithms. To this end, a number of successful meta-device inverse-design approaches have been demonstrated in the literature including those based on topology optimization, deep learning, and global optimization. While each has its pros and cons, multi-objective optimization strategies have proven quite successful do their ability to optimize problems with multiple competing objectives: a common occurrence in optical design. Moreover, multiobjective algorithms produce a Pareto Set of optimal solutions that designers can analyze in order to directly study the tradeoffs between the various design goals. In our presentation, we will introduce an efficient multi-objective optimization enabled design framework for the generation of broadband and multifunctional meta-atoms. Additionally, several meta-optic design examples will be presented, and future research directions discussed.
Extreme‐Angle Silicon Infrared Optics Enabled by Streamlined Surfaces

Abstract:<p>Infrared optical systems are indispensable in almost all domains of society, but their performances are often restricted by bulky size, small field of view, large thermal sensitivity, high fabrication cost, etc. Here, based on the concept of catenary optics, a novel isophase streamline optimization approach is leveraged to design silicon complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS)‐compatible metasurfaces with broadband, wide‐angle, and high‐efficiency performances, which breaks through the glass ceiling of traditional optical technologies. By using the truly local geometric phase, a maximum diffraction efficiency approaching 100% is obtained in ultrawide spectral and angular ranges. Somewhat surprising results are shown in that wide‐angle diffraction‐limited imaging and laser beam steering can be realized with a record field of view up to 178°. This methodology is scalable to the entire optical band and other materials, enabling unprecedented compact infrared systems for surveillance, unmanned vehicles, medical science, etc.</p>

In this work, we establish a versatile metasurface platform based on gap-surface plasmon meta-atoms enabling efficient linear-polarization conversion along with the complete phase control over reflected fields. Capitalizing on the meta-atom design, multifunctional metamirrors involving linear-polarization conversion and focusing are experimentally demonstrated to generate various kinds of focused beams with distinct phase distributions and wavefronts, reproducing thereby the combined functionalities of conventional half-wave plates, lenses, and even spatial light modulators. The proof-of-concept fabricated metamirrors exhibit excellent capability of linear-polarization conversion and focusing within the wavelength range from 800 to 950 nm under linearly-polarized excitation. The multifunctional metamirrors design developed in this study opens new avenues in the advanced research and applications targeting photonics integration of diversified functionalities.

Abstract:Manipulating electromagnetic waves by controlling their amplitude, phase, and polarization is essential for implementing numerous exciting applications and consumer-level devices. However, conventional optical elements acquire phase accumulation through the propagation effect, which results in bulky optical devices and thus hinders their further miniaturization. In recent years, the remarkable development of nanofabrication technologies enabled the emergence of artificially engineered ultrathin structures called metasurfaces that provide a fascinating boulevard to tailor the field distribution of electromagnetic waves at the micron scale. Metasurfaces are ultrathin optical components with an array of low-loss, precisely engineered building blocks that exhibit the unprecedented capability of manipulating electromagnetic waves. However, the ever-growing demand for miniaturized multifunctional optical devices requires the design and implementation of ultra-compact devices capable of integrating multiple functionalities into a single structure. Here, in this work, we proposed a single-layered all-dielectric multifunctional metadevice capable of controlling the wavefront of the incident light and exhibiting multiple optical phenomena in the ultraviolet domain. The presented meta-device exploits the spin-decoupling technique and interleaves the propagating and Pancharatnam-Barry (PB) phases to encode the multiple functionalities in it. Our meta-device consists of a super-cell having rectangular nanoantennas of silicon nitride (Si3N4) material arranged on a sapphire (Al2O3) substrate. The proposed meta-device generates three focused spots at the specified focal plane but at different positions by impinging the linearly polarized light. The presented design technique may provide an exciting roadmap toward developing and implementing multifunctional meta-devices, which will find several applications in medicine, communication, and integrated photonics.
Broadband Light Structuring Through All-Dielectric Metasurfaces for Imaging Applications

Abstract:The achievement of a wide-ranging and versatile response from a single optical device holds significant relevance in microscopy and bio-medical imaging techniques. These imaging methods help us find the building blocks of a targeted object. However, classic optical systems require multiple components, which results in a bulky setup, making them impossible to integrate on a single chip. Luckily, metasurfaces are scientifically engineered and can manipulate light at subwavelength degrees. Therefore, they are ideal for constructing compact optical devices that seamlessly integrate onto a single chip. Current research trends have directed good attention towards broadband multifunctional meta-devices offering different applications. These metasurfaces can change waves at nano levels and show talent for various imaging and data communications tasks. However, developing multifunctional metasurfaces that can operate across a spectrum and have a single-cell construction base remains a challenge. In this study, we introduce an innovative spin-decoupled metasurface that functions across all visible spectrums to manipulate visible light and offers applications in biomedical imaging. Our designed methodology can integrate different phase profiles onto a single metasurface with the help of Fourier transformation, which gives different responses for different circularly polarized light. We numerically simulated each designed metasurface using the visible spectrum, and the obtained results indicate an excellent performance of a multifunctional metasurface. The presented approach and compact metadevices can pave the roadway for applications such as optical data transfer, edge detection microscopy, and biomedical imaging.
