Abstract:In Lake Hume, a reservoir located in an active agricultural zone of the Murray River catchment, Australia, time series for the abundances of phytoplankton and zooplankton taxa, monitored from 1991 through to 1996, were stationary (without trends), and plankton taxonomic composition did not change. This indicated ecosystem resilience to strong fluctuations in reservoir water level, and to other potential agricultural impacts, for example eutrophication and pollution. Although biological stressors such as introduced fish and invertebrate predators are known to affect planktonic communities and reduce biodiversity in lakes, high densities of planktivorous stages of alien European perch (Perca fluviatilis) and the presence of carp (Cyprinus carpio) did not translate into non-stationary time series or declining trends for plankton in Lake Hume. However, the seasonal successions observed in the reservoir in different years did not conform well to the Plankton Ecology Group (PEG) model. Significant deviations of the Lake Hume successional pattern from the PEG model included maxima for phytoplankton abundance being in winter and the presence of a clear water phase without large zooplankton grazers. The instability of the water level in Lake Hume probably causes the dynamics of most planktonic populations to be less predictable, but did not initiate the declining trends that have been observed in some other Australian reservoirs. Both the PEG model and the present study suggest that hydrology is one of the major drivers of seasonal succession.

Temporal Variation of Plankton and Zoobenthos Communities in a Freshwater Reservoir: Structure Feature, Construction Mechanism, Associated Symbiosis and Environmental Response

Abstract:Phytoplankton, zooplankton and zoobenthos, due to their small individuals and strong reproductive ability, usually occupy an irreplaceable position in freshwater reservoir biomes, understanding their community characteristics and symbiosis mechanism is of great significance for revealing the quality of water ecological environment and the evolution trend of water ecosystem, however, the spatio-temporal dynamics of communities building mechanisms and interspecific and environmental interactions are still lacking. Here, the structure feature, construction mechanism, associated symbiosis and environmental response of plankton and zoobenthos communities were studied in a freshwater reservoir. There were significant seasonal differences in phytoplankton, zooplankton and zoobenthos communities characteristics. Dispersal limitation played an important role in the construction of phytoplankton, zooplankton community and zoobenthos communities, and the influence degree decreases in order. Phytoplankton showed a stronger distance-decay of similarity than zooplankton, no significant distance-decay of similarity was observed in zoobenthos communities. Co-existence network displayed the primarily positive interactions between phytoplankton, zooplankton and zoobenthos all the year round (92.23% positive in summer, 86.36% positive in autumn, 100% positive in winter and 67.35% positive in spring). Variation Partitioning Analyses showed that geographical variables were more affect communities distribution compared with environmental factors. Mantel test showed that the communities diversity was significantly associated with Temperature, dissolved oxygen, nutrients N and nutrients P. Redundancy Analysis revealed that temperature had the highest explanation rate for seasonal variation in phytoplankton (11.48%, p < 0.001) and zooplankton (16.22%, p < 0.001). These findings provide an in-depth understanding about the dynamic balance of ecological communities in freshwater reservoir aquatic.

Abstract:Microbial communities in surface waters are affected by environmental conditions and can influence changes in water quality. To explore the hypothesis that the microbiome in agricultural waters associates with spatiotemporal variations in overall water quality and, in turn, has implications for resource monitoring and management, we characterized the relationships between the microbiota and physicochemical properties in a model irrigation pond as a factor of sampling time (i.e., 9:00, 12:00, 15:00) and location within the pond (i.e., bank vs. interior sites and cross-sectional depths at 0, 1, and 2 m). The microbial communities, which were defined by 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis, significantly varied based on all sampling factors (PERMANOVA P < 0.05 for each). While the relative abundances of dominant phyla (e.g., Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes) were relatively stable throughout the pond, subtle yet significant increases in α -diversity were observed as the day progressed (ANOVA P < 0.001). Key water quality properties that also increased between the morning and afternoon (i.e., pH, dissolved oxygen, and temperature) positively associated with relative abundances of Cyanobacteria, though were inversely proportional to Verrucomicrobia. These properties, among additional parameters such as bioavailable nutrients (e.g., NH 3 , NO 3 , PO 4 ), chlorophyll, phycocyanin, conductivity, and colored dissolved organic matter, exhibited significant relationships with relative abundances of various bacterial genera as well. Further investigation of the microbiota in underlying sediments revealed significant differences between the bank and interior sites of the pond ( P < 0.05 for α - and β -diversity). Overall, our findings emphasize the importance of accounting for time of day and water sampling location and depth when surveying the microbiomes of irrigation ponds and other small freshwater sources.

Abstract:Planktons are small microscopic organisms, comprising diatoms and algae, which form the basis of primary production and the zooplankton, which are mainly crustaceans, rotifers and larval stages of larger animals. Both are the bio-indicators of a water body, constituting the main food for the carnivorous and omnivorous fishes in any aquatic ecosystem. In the present study, the species diversity, and their abundance with a total and average population of various species of phytoplankton have been studied in the primary and secondary domestic oxidation ponds along with a freshwater control pond situated at Shahpura. Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India. Physicochemical parameters like light penetration, water temperature, pH and DO were also analyzed along with the phytoplankton population in both types of ponds to assess their impacts. The samples were collected and identified using standard methods. The results revealed that the phytoplankton groups like Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Cyanophyceae and Euglenophyceae were dominantly found in the sewage oxidation ponds along with about 20 species of phytoplankton in varying population densities in different seasons. A similar analysis was done in a freshwater control normal pond for comparison. Physicochemical parameters in these secondary sewage oxidation ponds with a high nutrient load were found to be highly favourable for the growth of the plankton species. A comparatively low number of phytoplankton was recorded in the freshwater control pond, which was highly deficient in nutrients.
Effects of Pond Water Depth and Method of Aeration on Phytoplankton Communities in Macrobrachium rosenbergii Farming Ponds

Abstract:Recently, profitable Macrobrachium rosenbergii farming has developed rapidly in Asia. The occurrence of cyanobacterial blooms is one of the major environmental problems usually encountered in freshwater prawn farms. This study investigated the effects of pond water depth and aeration mode on phytoplankton communities in selected M. rosenbergii farming ponds in China. We adjusted pond water depth and aeration mode (pond water depth: 1.2 m or 1.8 m; method of aeration: surface or both surface and bottom) to compare and analyze phytoplankton community structure and characteristics between ecological (pond water depth: 1.8 m, both surface and bottom aeration) and traditional (pond water depth: 1.2 m, surface aeration) farming ponds. Water quality parameters were compared in six aquaculture systems, which were measured in situ or lab. The results showed that ecological culture suppressed Cyanophyta abundance and significantly increased the numbers of phytoplankton species leading to a 30.43–136.84% increase in the number of species for ecological ponds compared with that in traditional ponds. In all seasons, ecological culture tended to have decreased total nitrogen and ammonia nitrogen, and significantly lower total phosphorus and reactive phosphate compared with traditional ponds. In conclusion, ponds should maintain deeper water depth (1.8 m) and higher N/P ratio (>3) to promote phytoplankton diversity and suppress blooms; applying optimized culture may resolve planktonic algae problems in aquaculture ponds in Asia.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES Acute bleeding from esophageal varices is a major complication of cirrhosis. Despite the large number of published studies no predictive factors of control of bleeding have been identified. We assessed the clinical and biological factors predictive of bleeding control within the first 2 weeks after a bleeding episode in a homogeneous group of patients enrolled in a large multicenter trial, who underwent a standardized emergency sclerotherapy session. METHODS 101 patients with cirrhosis were enrolled. All had endoscopy-proven variceal bleeding, and the interval between hematemesis or melena and emergency sclerotherapy was always less than 24 hours. A second sclerotherapy session and other methods for the prevention of rebleeding were allowed after 5 days. RESULTS Treatment failed in 16 patients after 24 hours and in a total of 33 patients after 15 days. Three of the 17 variables included in multivariate logistic analysis were associated with failure at 24 hours: encephalopathy (P = 0.006, OR = 4.0), blood transfusion prior to sclerotherapy (P = 0.012, OR = 6.2) and previous propranolol therapy (P = 0.022, OR = 4.6). Two variables were associated with failure between 24 hours and day 15 in patients successfully controlled after 24 hours: an interval between the onset of bleeding and sclerotherapy of less than 12 hours (P = 0.010) and blood transfusion (P = 0.018). After 15 days, three variables were associated with failure in a multivariate Cox model: encephalopathy (P = 0.0025, OR = 2.3), time to sclerotherapy (P = 0.022, OR 2.3) and blood transfusion before sclerotherapy (P = 0.0005, OR = 4.0). CONCLUSION Encephalopathy, the severity of bleeding, assessed in terms of transfusion requirements, and the time between clinically overt bleeding and sclerotherapy are the main predictive factors of failure of the control of bleeding after emergency sclerotherapy for acute bleeding from esophageal varices.
The Variation of Plankton Community Structure in Artificial Reef Area and Adjacent Waters in Haizhou Bay

Abstract:Plankton are an important component of marine protected areas (MPAs), and its communities would require much smaller interpatch distances to ensure connection among MPAs. According to the survey from MPAs dominated by artificial reefs and adjacent waters (estuary area (EA), aquaculture area (AA), artificial reef area (ARA), natural area (NA) and comprehensive effect area (CEA)) in Haizhou Bay in spring and autumn, we analyzed phyto-zooplankton composition, abundance and biomass, and correlation with hydrologic variables to gain information about the forces that structure the plankton. The results showed that the dominant zooplankton were copepods (spring, 98.9%; autumn, 94.2%), while the phytoplankton were mainly composed of Bacillariophyta (spring, 61.8%; autumn, 95.6%). The RDA results showed that temperature, salinity and depth highly associated with the distribution and composition of plankton species among the habitats than other factors in spring; temperature, Chla and DO had the strongest influence in autumn. The zooplankton in the ARA and AA ecosystems basically contained the same species as those in other habitats, and each habitat also exhibited a relatively unique combination of plankton species. The structures of the EA zooplankton in spring and the EA phytoplankton in both seasons were much different than other habitats, which may have been caused by factors such as currents and tides. We concluded that there exists similarity of the plankton community between artificial reef area and adjacent waters, whereas the EAs may be relatively independent systems. Therefore, these interaction between plankton community should be considered when designing MPA networks, and ocean circulations should be considered more than the environmental factors.

Abstract:Temperate lakes experience variation in mixing and stratification that affects the distributions, activities, abundances, and diversity of plankton communities. We examined temporal and vertical changes in the composition of planktonic microorganisms (including Bacteria and Archaea) in oligotrophic Flathead Lake, Montana. Using a combination of approaches that included 16S rRNA gene sequencing and flow cytometric determination of cell abundances, we found that the microbial community was responsive to variations in stratification and mixing at time scales ranging from episodic (scale of days) to seasonal. Abstract:In recent decades, freshwater ecosystems have been threatened worldwide by multiple simultaneous stressors, including eutrophication, climate change and competing demands for water sources. However, understanding of the long-term variation of zooplankton communities remains limited because long-term observations are lacking. Here, using a long-term (19 year) monitoring dataset, we demonstrate the spatio-temporal variation of zooplankton communities in Lake Taihu, a large, shallow, heterogenous lake in China. With the development of eutrophication, the abundance and biomass of zooplankton first increased from 1998 to 2004, and then exhibited a decreasing trend thereafter. Specifically, the population of rotifer dramatically declined after 2001, while the abundance of copepod and cladoceran showed an increasing trend even though their biomass decreased significantly after 2008. The dominance of small cladocerans (Bosmina coregoni and Ceriodaphnia cornuta) and copepod (Limnothora sinensis) significantly increased with decreasing rotifer density after 2014. Moreover, the zooplankton community structure exhibited heterogenous spatial population dynamics. Cladoceran and rotifer were predominant in cyanobacteria-dominated regions, while a higher proportion of copepod were found in macrophyte-dominated regions. Analyses revealed that zooplankton communities were strongly affected by climate warming and nutrients. These results reinforce previous work demonstrating that the development of eutrophication and climate warming could change the structure of zooplankton community and increase the dominance of small-bodied crustacean. Our findings address the recognized gap in understanding the variation of the zooplankton community in Lake Taihu, and provide an opportunity to evaluate ongoing changes in the zooplankton community related to future environmental change scenarios.

Abstract:The rising challenge of eutrophication in aquatic systems globally necessitates an understanding of phytoplankton community dynamics under diverse biomanipulation approaches. This study, conducted from June 2022 to July 2023 in the Yuqiao Reservoir's ponds in China, explored phytoplankton dynamics across ponds under different biomanipulation strategies. The study included a pond (BL) without fish stocking, a pond (CH) stocked with carnivorous and herbivorous fish, and another pond (CFD) incorporating a mix of carnivorous, filter-feeding, and detritus-feeding fish. Substantial seasonal variations in phytoplankton density and biomass were observed. In the BL pond, phytoplankton density ranged from 0.23 × 107 to 3.21 × 107 ind/L and biomass from 0.71 to 7.10 mg/L, with cyanobacteria predominantly in warmer seasons and a shift to cryptophytes and chrysophytes in winter. The CH pond exhibited a density range from 0.61 × 107 to 8.04 × 107 ind/L and biomass of 1.11 to 7.58 mg/L. Remarkably, the CFD pond demonstrated a significant reduction in both density (0.11 × 107 to 2.36 × 107 ind/L) and biomass (0.27 to 5.95 mg/L), indicating the effective implementation of its biomanipulation strategy. Key environmental factors including total nitrogen, water temperature, pH, chlorophyll-a, and total phosphorus played a significant role in shaping phytoplankton communities. The study highlights the importance of tailored biomanipulation strategies in aquatic ecosystem management, emphasizing long-term monitoring for sustainable management of eutrophication.

Abstract:The primary objective of this study was to investigate the temporal and spatial variations in phytoplankton diversity, community composition, and associated environmental variables within Manori Creek, Northwest Coasts of India. Monthly surface water samples were systematically collected from January 2022 to February 2023 at three designated stations. The taxonomic analysis identified 114 phytoplankton species belonging to 67 genera, 53 families, and nine different classes, comprising Bacillariophyceae (29.8%), Mediophyceae (25.4%), Dinophyceae (19.3%), Coscinodiscophyceae (15.8%), Cyanophyceae (4.4%), Chlorophyceae (2.6%), Eustigmatophyceae (0.9%), Noctilucophyceae (0.9%), and Zygnematophyceae (0.9%). Cluster analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling revealed three distinct clusters with unique spatial and temporal characteristics. The estuarine region at station 2 exhibited the highest species richness, while the riverine region at station 3 demonstrated the highest species diversity and dominance. The research outcomes revealed that phytoplankton diversity, richness, and evenness indices were highest during the monsoon and lowest during the pre-monsoon. Biota-environment stepwise analysis (BIO-ENV) results indicated that air temperature, salinity, pH, transparency, nitrite, total phosphorus, and silicate (Spearman coefficient " ρ " = 0.8327) are deterministic environmental variables that influence the distribution and community structure of phytoplankton. The canonical correspondence analysis further elucidated that the abundance of phytoplankton is primarily influenced by variables such as transparency, pH, total phosphate, nitrite, temperature, silicate, and chlorophyll-a concentration. The novelty of this research lies in its holistic approach to considering its unique environmental conditions incorporating a wide range of physical, chemical, and biological parameters that collectively influence phytoplankton dynamics.

Abstract:Plankton are promising ecological monitoring tool that responds quickly to any sort of aquatic ecological alteration, of which many of them are much susceptible to ecological variations. Therefore, monitoring shifts in plankton composition can indicate changes in water quality and aid to identify potential pollution sources. In the present study, the variation in plankton dynamics in relation to ecological variables were monitored in the freshwater zone of the Hooghly estuary from May 2020 to April 2021. The study was conducted in the interval of every six hours. i.e., at 6 A.M., 12 P.M., 6 P.M., and 12 A.M. The present finding revealed the occurrence of 54 phytoplankton and 20 zooplankton taxa/species. Diel variation revealed that among different time intervals, the highest abundance of phytoplankton was recorded 28,307 cells l −1 at 12 P.M, while the lowest was recorded 10,632 cells l −1 at 6 A.M. However, the highest zooplankton abundance was observed 804 ind l −1 at 6 A.M., and the lowest was recorded 156 ind l −1 at 6 P.M. The ANOVA (p < 0.05) analysis indicated significant diel variation for many planktonic genera. The CCA exhibited that most of the phytoplankton were influenced by multiple water quality variables such as temperature, turbidity, calcium, pH, salinity, DO, and nutrients. However, the majority of the zooplankton were affected by turbidity, total phosphorus, sulphate, calcium and available nitrogen. Significant seasonal variation in plankton composition has also been observed. The present study will help to determine the varying diel pattern of planktons in retort to alterations in the water quality parameters and varying ecological niches.

Abstract:Common seasonal plankton succession patterns in temperate lakes are well understood, and were described in the popular PEG-model. Seasonal plankton succession in warm-water lakes, however, is not as well known. Recent theory suggests that some lake systems are characteristic of having alternate system-states, where one of the system-states is characterized by dominance of cyanobacteria, and transition between system-states can be abrupt and undeterminable. Lake Somerville, a shallow, well-mixed, warm-water reservoir located in eastern TX, U.S.A., experiences occasional periods of cyanobacteria dominance. To increase our understanding of seasonal plankton dynamics in warm-water systems, we analyzed 14-years of plankton data spanning a 22-year period. During this period, succession dynamics characteristic of those described by the PEG-model were observed, as well as succession dynamics expected during periods of cyanobacteria dominance, i.e., greater accumulated phytoplankton biovolume, low secondary productivity, and low light penetration. In addition to the PEG-model and cyanobacteria type system-states, other states of the system that were intermediate between these were observed. Therefore, we conclude the lake does not behave according to the alternate system-states model. The change from year to year in early-year cyanobacteria dominance was abrupt and non-monotonic during this period. In addition, the early year performance of cyanobacteria appeared to influence the plankton succession trajectory for the remainder of the season. While the magnitude of lake-flushing early in the year accounted for ∼37% of variability in cyanobacteria prevalence, many of the traditional factors impacting cyanobacteria dominance appeared insignificant.

Abstract:Fishponds are artificial yet dynamic environments. Microbes play a vital role in the conversion and metabolism of organic matter in aquaculture environments such as fishponds. Changes in bacterial community composition in three fishponds over a 5-month period were investigated by sequencing the 16S rRNA gene through Illumina Miseq. A total of 2,195,879 sequences and 9,975 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were obtained. Further analysis showed that the dominant phyla in three ponds were similar, including Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes. A comprehensive analysis of the diversity, redundancy analysis (RDA) and partial redundancy analysis (pRDA) showed a spatial-temporal structural pattern in the bacterial communities. The bacterial community composition in the three fishponds was shaped more by spatial variation than by temporal variation. The effect of pond isolation was emphasized by the significant differences observed in the three fishponds. However, the temporal succession of bacterial communities in each pond exhibited a similar trend. Correlation analysis and RDA also indicated that temporal variation was significantly associated with TOC, TN and NO2-. This study would improve our understanding of the assembly mechanisms of a microbial structure in artificial pond ecosystems, and provide useful information for fishpond management.

Macroinvertebrates play a crucial role in food webs and contribute about 42% of whole-lake secondary productivity. Therefore, their status is vital for maintaining good ecological functions. In this study, we selected Nanwan Reservoir, a eutrophic thermally stratified reservoir in China, to evaluate the community of macroinvertebrates in different seasons and explore the relationships between macroinvertebrate assemblages and different planktonic groups, including phytoplankton, protozoans, rotifers, and planktonic crustaceans. Cyanophyta and Bacillariophyta dominated the phytoplankton assemblages, and their proportions varied with seasons. The bad community of macroinvertebrates in summer, autumn, and winter could be attributed to the excessive growth of Cyanophyta or other phytoplankton. Based on the results of partial least squares regression, an algorithm used for prediction, we determined that the excessive growth of algae, crustaceans, protozoans, and Cyanophyta was detrimental to the development of macroinvertebrates, and was indicative of high nutrient loads in the reservoir. However, the growth of Bacillariophyta, Chrysophyta, and Euglenophyta was advantageous to macroinvertebrate assemblages and indicated a better ecological condition of the reservoir. The results of partial least squares structural equation modeling demonstrated close associations between phytoplankton and both zooplankton and macroinvertebrates, indicating their interdependence in this reservoir system. Our study results imply that the status of macroinvertebrates can be predicted by the abundance of some planktonic assemblages, and cost savings from selecting one of the planktonic groups to monitor ecological conditions could be accomplished in future studies.

Abstract:Plankton is essential to estuarine food webs, providing key food for species like fish larvae, and understanding their dynamics helps us comprehend ecological interactions and energy transfer in aquatic ecosystems. This study examined the plankton community structure, diversity, variability and the environmental variables of water that influenced these communities in a freshwater-dominated estuary along the Northern Bay of Bengal during the dry season. A variety of tools were employed, including a dissecting microscope, a Sedgwick-Rafter cell, and a Hanna multi-parameter meter, to obtain detailed and comprehensive data. From the analyses, in total 37 genera of phytoplankton belonging to 11 classes such as Bacillariophyceae (66%), Coscinodiscophyceae (28%), Fragilariophyceae (1%), Euglenophyceae (1%), Cyanophyceae (1%), others (3%) were recorded. Zooplankton, consisting of multicellular organisms, was represented by 11 genera across five classes, with Monogononta (53%) and Insecta (29%) being the most prevalent. Phytoplankton exhibited a mean abundance of 180,000 ± 20,200 cells L−1 whereas zooplankton showed a mean abundance of 3,000 ± 200 cells L−1. The diversity indices (H'), evenness (J') and dominance (D) ranged from 1.188 ± 0.015 to 0.19 ± 0.006, 0.9377 ± 0.002 to 0.5118 ± 0.006, 0.365 ± 0.001 to 0.143 ± 0.002 respectively, suggested low to moderate plankton diversity with a suppressed community and moderate to high dominance in the river water. Based on the similarity percentage (SIMPER) and analysis of similarity (ANOSIM), Phytoplankton and zooplankton varied significantly between stations while non-metric multi-dimensional scaling (nMDS) indicated greater consistency in phytoplankton communities across stations compared to zooplankton. Furthermore, Pearson's correlation coefficient (rs) and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) identified transparency, sulfates, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, TDS, pH, and salinity as major influencers of plankton abundance; nitrate had a moderate effect. Spearman's rank correlations showed significant positive (p < 0.05) correlations between diversity indices and environmental variables.

Abstract:Majority of macrozooplankton have a wider dietary niche breadth and utilize small invertebrates, microzooplankton and mesozooplankton, so effect on primary production might be through trophic cascading effect. To better understand the ecosystem structure of benthic oyster-macroalgae reefs, we analyzed zooplankton community structure before (July 2016) and after (from September 2016 to October 2017) the construction of benthic reefs in the 2 km2 sea ranch area in Xiangyun Cove, Tangshan, China. We identified 57 zooplankton species, including the 12 cnidarian (e.g., Clytia hemisphaerica Linnaeus and Eirene ceylonensis Browne), 1 ctenopharyngodon (Pleurobrachia globosa Moser), 24 crustacean (e.g., Calanus sinicus Brodsky, Paracalanus parvus Claus, Labibocera euchaeta Glesbrecht, Labibocera bipinnata Tanaka, Calanopia thompsoni Scott, and Centropages dorsispinatus Thompson), 1 chaetognath (Sagitta crassa Tokioka), 1 urochordate species (Oikopleura dioica Fol), and 18 species of planktonic polychaete and gastropod larvae. The zooplankton density and biomass values before reef construction were 266.14 ind/m3 and 2.72 mg/m3, respectively, and those after reef construction were 138.06 ind/m3 and 32.91 mg/m3, respectively. The biomass trend was as follow: October 2017 (89.08 mg/m3) > August 2017 (70.97) > September 2016 (3.17) > July 2016 (2.72) > June 2017 (0.86) > May 2017 (0.44). The common dominant organisms were crustaceans and chaetognaths. According to the RDA ranking results, water temperature was positively correlated with the Shannon-Wiener diversity index and Margalef's richness indexes. With the increasement of Margalef's richness index, the value of dissolved oxygen content showed a significant negative correlation with zooplankton abundance. The results of this study are applicable to sustainable development and management strategies of coastal reef ecosystems and provide a basis for further surveys of secondary productivity in the sea ranch area.
On the Dominant Behavior of Zooplankton in Different types of Domestic Sewage Oxidation Ponds

Abstract:Plankton are small microscopic organisms, comprising diatoms and algae, which form the basis of primary production, whereas zooplankton are mainly crustaceans, rotifers and larval stages of larger animals which constitute the higher aquatic food web. Both are bio-indicators of a water body, constituting the main food for the carnivorous and omnivorous fishes in the aquatic ecosystem. In the present work, a detailed analysis of zooplankton diversity along with variations in species, and seasonal abundance with average and total population density was carried out in different types of domestic sewage oxidation ponds. Similar analysis for a comparison was done in a freshwater control pond situated in Bhopal India. In this study out of 8 ponds, 4 were selected for zooplankton analysis two being primary and two being secondary sewage oxidation ponds and one freshwater control pond was selected for comparative analysis. The results indicated that the number of zooplankton in all ponds ranged from 162 to 14776 org/L, seasonally it was observed that the sewage oxidation ponds had the maximum population of zooplankton in winter, followed by rainy and summer seasons. Regarding the population of zooplankton in the individual oxidation ponds, it was found that sewage secondary pond IIIB had the maximum zooplankton followed by IIIA. Interesting observations on the cascading effects of physicochemical parameters on plankton dynamics, including the variations in the diel population of various species of zooplankton have been recorded. The phenomenon of plankton grazing in different types of domestic sewage ponds is being reported for the first time.
