Abstract:Determination of different environmental factors and their spatio-temporal variations is sparingly important theme in ecological science because the productivity of an ecosystem is regulated by these factors. Here in East Kolkata Wetland (EKW) through a web of canal the composite tannery effluent is discharged and these are productively used in the piscicultural and agricultural farming of this area. So, in concern of agro-piscicultural productivity it is very essential to know the present soil profile of EKW. Soil organic carbon (SOC) and some essential anions/nutrients like F, Cl, NO3, PO4 and SO4 in the agricultural/bank surface soils and bottom sediments are recorded from the seven different characteristic regions in EKW area. To describe precisely the variations of all these factors in spatio-temporal scale, the profile maps are constructed by using geostatistics. 1.03–2.25 % SOC in marginal bank soil and 1.26–2.42 % SOC in bottom soil are present in EKW area. Except NO3 all other measured anions are present higher concentration than normal level in EKW area and these have both positive and negative impact especially on the SOC concentration i.e. in carbon sequestration, anion-cation balance, ecotoxicity, nutrient availability of that area. Results of this study indicate that under proper management strategies of site specific use of tannery effluent will reduce the fertilizer/manure cost of farmers. These will surely increase the contribution of leather industry in ecologically and ecological productivity of EKW Ecosystem.
[Injuries of the cruciate ligament of the knee: diagnostic contribution of MR and spiral CT].

Abstract:Lesions of cruciate ligament are common after knee trauma of different degree of gravity. Lesions evaluation is possible thanks to CT and MRI. Our purpose is to verify their value in diagnosis of cruciate ligaments lesions. We retrospectively evaluated 160 patients (80 CT and 80 MRI) with subsequent diagnosis of cruciate ligaments injury. CT and MRI were performed in the acute phase and in the subacute phase within 2-3 weeks from trauma. On the basis of our results CT and MRI shown a reduced sensitivity in acute phase owing to the intraarticular haemorrhage; in this phase MRI gives more information about fibres interruption. In subacute or chronic phase, both methods are correct in recognising the lesions but MRI is more sensitive and accurate. It is a real wish that, with more MRI machines diffusion, this method will be preferred in the study of cruciate ligaments both in acute phase and subacute-chronic phase.

Abstract:Seasonal studies were carried out from 21 stations, comprising of three zones, of Cochin Estuary, to assess the organic matter quality and trophic status. The hydographical parameters showed significant seasonal variations and nutrients and chlorophylls were generally higher during the monsoon season. However, chemical contamination along with the seasonal limitations of light and nitrogen imposed restrictions on the primary production and as a result, mesotrophic conditions generally prevailed in the water column. The nutrient stoichometries and δ13C values of surficial sediments indicated significant allochthonous contribution of organic matter. Irrespective of the higher content of total organic matter, the labile organic matter was very low. Dominance of carbohydrates over lipids and proteins indicated the lower nutritive aspect of the organic matter, and their aged and refractory nature. This, along with higher amount of phytodetritus and the low algal contribution to the biopolymeric carbon corroborated the dominance of allochthonous organic matter and the heterotrophic nature. The spatial and seasonal variations of labile organic components could effectively substantiate the observed shift in the productivity pattern. An alternative ratio, lipids to tannins and lignins, was proposed to ascertain the relative contribution of allochthonous organic matter in the estuary. This study confirmed the efficiency of an integrated biogeochemical approach to establish zones with distinct benthic trophic status associated with different degrees of natural and anthropogenic input. Nevertheless, our results also suggest that the biochemical composition alone could lead to erroneous conclusions in the case of regions that receive enormous amounts of anthropogenic inputs.

Abstract:The growing trend of land-based aquaculture has heightened the significance of comprehensively assessing air-water carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) gas exchange in these inland waters , given their potential impact on carbon neutral strategies. However, temporal variations of partial pressure of CO 2 ( p CO 2 ) and CO 2 flux in clam and fish aquaculture ponds were barely investigated. We assessed the water surface p CO 2 in one to five months intervals by deploying a lab-made buoy in three clam ponds and three fishponds located in tropical and subtropical climates. Measurements were conducted over a 24 h period each time, spanning from April 2021 to June 2022, covering the stocking, middle, and harvesting stages of the culture cycle. Diurnal p CO 2 variations were dominantly controlled by biologically driven changes in dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity (~97 %), while temperature and salinity effects were minor (~3 %). Clam ponds acted as a sink of atmospheric CO 2 during stocking stages and transitioned to a source during middle to harvesting stages. In contrast, fishponds acted as a source of atmospheric CO 2 throughout culture cycles and CO 2 flux strengthened when reaching harvesting stages. Overall, clam ponds acted as a weak sink for atmospheric CO 2 (−2.8 ± 17.3 mmol m −2 d −1 ), whereas fishponds acted as a source (16.8 ± 21.7 mmol m −2 d −1 ). CO 2 emission was stronger during daytime coinciding with higher windspeeds compared to nighttime in fishponds. We suggest incorporating high temporal resolution measurements to account for diurnal and culture-stage variations, enabling more accurate estimates of air-water CO 2 flux in aquaculture ponds. Moreover, the findings of this study highlight the importance of feeding, aeration, and biological activities (photosynthesis, remineralization, and calcification) in controlling the air-water CO 2 flux in aquaculture ponds and such information can be used in implementing better strategies to achieve carbon neutral goals.

Abstract:Anthropogenic deposition of nitrogen (N) and elevated CO 2 ( ea CO 2 ) are expected to increase continuously and rapidly in the near future and influence global carbon cycling. These parameters affect the ecosystem by regulating the microbial community and contribute to soil organic matter decomposition. The study was performed to understand the effects of N additions (4 and 6mgl −1 ) and ea CO 2 (700 ppm) on carbon (C)/nitrogen (N) content in the soil, microbial community, and plant biomass ( Alternanthera philoxeroides species). The results showed that when the atmospheric CO 2 concentration was raised, the total organic carbon (TOC) in the soil statistically increased ( P < 0.05) by 4% and 3% under low and high N additions respectively, while the inorganic carbon content also increased by 1% and 3% ( P > 0.05) under the same conditions. The increase in the soil TOC content was a result of the movement of carbon from water to the soil due to the presence of vascular tissues of plants in the water. The redundancy analysis (RDA) results revealed that the presence of plant species was responsible for the carbon content increment in the soil. The plant biomass content increased by 30.96% ( P = 0.081) and 31.36%, ( P = 0.002) under low and high N addition respectively due to the increment in atmospheric CO 2 . The nitrogen content in the plant species decreased ( p > 0.05) by 8.62% and 6.25% at low and high N addition respectively when atmospheric CO 2 was raised. This suggests that soil microbes competed with the plants for inorganic nitrogen in the soil and the microbes used up the inorganic nitrogen before it got to the plants. The gram-positive bacteria and fungi population decreased under high N addition and ea CO 2 while gram-negative bacteria increased, suggesting that N additions and ea CO 2 affected the microbial function and correlated with the nitrogen reduction in the soil. The results from this study serve as a guide to researchers and stakeholders in making policies with regard to the constant increasing CO 2 concentration in the atmosphere.

Abstract:Plankton are promising ecological monitoring tool that responds quickly to any sort of aquatic ecological alteration, of which many of them are much susceptible to ecological variations. Therefore, monitoring shifts in plankton composition can indicate changes in water quality and aid to identify potential pollution sources. In the present study, the variation in plankton dynamics in relation to ecological variables were monitored in the freshwater zone of the Hooghly estuary from May 2020 to April 2021. The study was conducted in the interval of every six hours. i.e., at 6 A.M., 12 P.M., 6 P.M., and 12 A.M. The present finding revealed the occurrence of 54 phytoplankton and 20 zooplankton taxa/species. Diel variation revealed that among different time intervals, the highest abundance of phytoplankton was recorded 28,307 cells l −1 at 12 P.M, while the lowest was recorded 10,632 cells l −1 at 6 A.M. However, the highest zooplankton abundance was observed 804 ind l −1 at 6 A.M., and the lowest was recorded 156 ind l −1 at 6 P.M. The ANOVA (p < 0.05) analysis indicated significant diel variation for many planktonic genera. The CCA exhibited that most of the phytoplankton were influenced by multiple water quality variables such as temperature, turbidity, calcium, pH, salinity, DO, and nutrients. However, the majority of the zooplankton were affected by turbidity, total phosphorus, sulphate, calcium and available nitrogen. Significant seasonal variation in plankton composition has also been observed. The present study will help to determine the varying diel pattern of planktons in retort to alterations in the water quality parameters and varying ecological niches.

Abstract:Exogenous nutrient inputs increasingly impact the structure and function of marine food weds through abiotic and biotic ways. The influence of nutrient inputs from atmospheric depositions and intermediate seawater supply on the phytoplankton growth and stoichiometry was studied in the Eastern Indian Ocean through multifactorial mesocosm experiments. Our results indicate that nitrogen inputs from atmospheric deposition and hydrodynamic processes did not only promote chlorophyll a biomass (5.3–58.52 μg·L-1) to increase the photosynthetically fixed carbon content but also generate a regime shift from picophytoplankton cyanobacteria to microphytoplankton diatom indicated by high relative abundance of microphytoplankton (>50%). These alternations of nutrient status and phytoplankton community structure reduced biodiversity of marine ecosystems (N-cultures, 0.18 to 0.56; control, 0.63) and generated the attendant C/N ratio of 5.6 ± 0.2 in cultures with nitrogen addition that was significantly lower than cultures with only phosphorus or iron addition. These results provide a thorough insight about the influence of nutrient inputs on marine biogeochemical cycle. Considering the universality of phytoplankton community alteration induced by exogenous nutrient inputs, integrating community compositions with phytoplankton stoichiometry may be helpful for clarify mechanisms of environment events impacting marine food weds.

Abstract:Rapid mariculture expansion has raised concerns about coastal eutrophication. This study assesses nutrient cycling in Sansha Bay, China, a eutrophic semi-enclosed bay with intensive mariculture. A two-endmember mixing model showed significant additions of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN; 6.9 ± 4.1 μmol L −1 ) and phosphorus (DIP; 0.45 ± 0.29 μmol L −1 ) in May 2020, mainly from mariculture. Estimated N and P inputs from fish farming were 7789 ± 361 tons and 1497 ± 91 tons in spring, respectively, with N mainly in dissolved form and P in particulate form. And, trash fish feed caused higher nutrient release than formulated feed. Of the feed input, 52.8 ± 4.7 % of DIN and 33.0 ± 3.7 % of DIP were released into environment, exceeding riverine input and offshore exchanges. Co-culturing kelp and oysters removed 1079 ± 11 tons of N and 156 ± 8 tons of P. Therefore, adjusting feed types and planning co-cultivation strategies could alleviate eutrophication resulting from mariculture expansion.

Abstract:The marine aquaculture industry has caused a suite of adverse environmental consequences, including offshore eutrophication. However, little is known about the extent to which aquaculture effluents affect nearby wetland ecosystems. We carried out a field experiment in a mangrove stand located between two effluent-receiving creeks to estimate the extent to which marine aquaculture affects the soil nutrient distribution and plant nutrient status of adjacent mangroves. Carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) contents and C isotopic signatures were determined seasonally in creeks, pore water, surface soils, and in the leaves of the dominant mangrove species Kandelia obovata . The creeks exhibited nutrient enrichment (2.44Â mgÂ N L âˆ’1 and 0.09Â mg P L âˆ’1 on average). The soils had N (from 1.40 to 2.70Â gÂ kg âˆ’1 ) and P (from 0.58 to 2.76Â gÂ kg âˆ’1 ) much greater than those of pristine mangrove forests. Combined analyses of the N:P ratio, nutrient resorption efficiency, and proficiency indicated that soil P met plant demands, but plants in most plots showed N limitation, suggesting that soil nutrient accumulation did not fundamentally impact the plant nutrient status. Collectively, this case study showsÂ that marine aquaculture farms can affect adjacent mangrove stands even though their effluents are not directly discharged into the mangrove stands, but mangrove forests may have substantial buffering capabilities for long-term nutrient loading.

Abstract:Abstract Spatio-temporal variation in phytoplankton community dynamics in a temporarily open/closed Swarnamukhi river estuary (SRE), located on the South East coast of India was investigated and correlated to that of the adjacent coastal waters. Understanding the seasonal variability of the phytoplankton community and influencing factors are essential to predicting their impact on fisheries as the river and coastal region serve as the main source of income for the local fishing communities. Downstream before the river meets the sea, an arm of the Buckingham Canal (BC), carrying anthropogenic inputs empties into the Swarnamukhi River (SR1). The impact of anthropogenic effects on the phytoplankton community at BC was compared to other estuarine stations SR2 (upstream), SR1 (downstream), SRM (river mouth) and coastal station (CS). In BC station, harmful algal blooms (HABs) of Chaetoceros decipiens (2940 × 10 3 cells L −1 ) and Oscillatoria sp. (1619 × 10 3 cells L −1 ) were found during the southwest monsoon and winter monsoon, respectively. These HABs can be linked to the anthropogenic input of increased nutrients and trace metals. The HABs of Oscillatoria sp. were shown to be induced by elevated concentrations of nitrate (10.18 μM) and Ni (3.0 ppm) compared to ambient, while the HABs of C. decipiens were caused by elevated concentrations of silicate (50.35 μM), nitrite (2.1 μM), and phosphate (4.37 μM). Elevated nutrients and metal concentration from the aquaculture farms, and other anthropogenic inputs could be one of the prime reasons for the recorded bloom events at BC station. During this period, observed bloom species density was found low at other estuarine stations and absent at CS. The formation of bloom events during the closure of the river mouth could be a major threat to the coastal ecosystem when it opens. During the Osillatoria sp. bloom, both the Cu and Ni levels were higher at BC. The elevated concentration of nutrients and metals could potentially affect the coastal ecosystem and in turn fisheries sector in the tropical coastal ecosystem.
Carbon metabolism and nutrient balance in a hypereutrophic semi-intensive fishpond

Abstract:Eutrophication and nutrient pollution is a serious problem in many fish aquaculture ponds, whose causes are often not well documented. The efficiency of using inputs for fish production in a hypereutrophic fishpond (Dehtář), was evaluated using organic carbon (OC), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) balances and measurement of ecosystem metabolism rates in 2015. Primary production and feeds were the main inputs of OC and contributed 82% and 13% to the total OC input, respectively. Feeds and manure were the major inputs of nutrients and contributed 73% and 86% of the total inputs of N and P, respectively. Ecosystem respiration, accumulation in water and accumulation in sediment were the main fates of OC, N and P, respectively. They accounted for 79%, 52% and 61% of OC, N and P inputs. The efficiency of using OC, N and P inputs to produce fish biomass was very low and represented 0.9%, 25% and 23% of total OC, N, and P inputs, indicating an excessive phytoplankton production and overdosing of fish feeds and manure. Dehtář pond was slightly autotrophic and phosphorus availability did not limit the phytoplankton growth. The low efficiency of using inputs was attributed to the low digestibility of raw cereals grain used as feed and the inability of planktonic food webs to transfer the primary production to fish due to high predatory pressure of fish stock on zooplankton. The primary production is an important input of OC in semi-intensive fishponds and should be considered in evaluations of fish production efficiency.

Abstract:The southwestern shelf water of India (eastern Arabian Sea) experiences high seasonality. This area is one of the understudied regions in terms of phytoplankton response to the projected ocean acidification, particularly, during the summer monsoon when phytoplankton abundance is high. Here we present the results of a short-term simulated ocean acidification experiment (ambient CO 2 424 μatm; high CO 2 , 843, 1138 μatm) on the natural phytoplankton assemblages conducted onboard ( R. V. Sindhu Sadhana ) during the summer monsoon (Aug 2017). Among the dissolved inorganic nutrients, dissolved silicate (DSi) and nitrate + nitrite levels were quite low (< 2 μM). Phytoplankton biomass did not show any net enhancement after the incubation in any treatment. Both marker pigment analysis and microscopy revealed the dominance of diatoms in the phytoplankton community, and a significant restructuring was noticed over the experimental period. Divinyl chlorophyll a (DVChl a ) containing picocyanobacteria and 19 '- hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin (19′HF) containing prymnesiophytes did not show any noticeable change in response to CO 2 enrichment. A CO 2 -induced positive growth response was noticed in some diatoms ( Guinardia flaccida , Cylindrotheca closterium , and Pseudo-nitzschia sp.) and dinoflagellates ( Protoperidinium sp. and Peridinium sp.) indicating their efficiency to quickly acclimatize at elevated CO 2 levels. This is important to note that the positive growth response of toxigenic pennate diatoms like Pseudo-nitzschia as well as a few dinoflagellates at elevated CO 2 levels can be expected in the future-ocean scenario. The proliferation of such non-palatable phytoplankton may impact grazing, the food chain, and carbon cycling in this region.

Abstract:The hydrochemical features affected by differing land uses play a key role in regulating both the primary production of aquatic photosynthetic organisms and the formation of autochthonous organic carbon (AOC); this impacts eutrophication and the global carbon cycle. In shallow water environments where phytoplankton and submerged plants coexist, the C-N-P limitations on the primary production of these aquatic organisms, and the mechanisms by which they promote the formation of AOC are poorly understood. In this study, over the hydrological year September 2018 to August 2019, a large-scale field simulation experiment at the Shawan Karst Test Site (SW China) with various types of land use was systematically conducted to investigate the C-N-P limitations on the primary production of phytoplankton and submerged plants. The results indicate that (1) phytoplankton are co-limited by nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) but with the N more important, while submerged plants are limited by carbon (C); (2) Chlorophyta and Bacillariophyta display a stronger competitive advantage than Cyanophyta in aqueous environments with high C but low N-P; (3) there is a seasonal difference in the contribution of phytoplankton and submerged plants to the formation of AOC, however, throughout the year, the contributions of phytoplankton (27%) and submerged plants biomass (28%) to AOC concentrations in the water were similar, combinedly accounting for approximately 17% of the formed AOC. It is concluded that natural restoration of vegetation, or injecting CO2 into water, which results in higher C but lower N-P loadings, may simultaneously help to mitigate eutrophication (with changes in biological structure and species) and increase C sequestration in surface waters.

Abstract:Water quality deterioration can adversely affect the long-term sustainability of aquaculture industry. Understanding the processes of nutrient regeneration and uptake is important for improving water quality and the overall ecosystem health of aquaculture system. In spite of the importance of dissolved nutrients (DOC, DIC, N-NOx−, N-NH4+, and P-PO43−) in governing water quality and ecosystem functioning, the spatiotemporal variations in the production and uptake of dissolved nutrients in aquaculture ponds is still poorly understood. In this study, the nutrient production and uptake rates in the overlying water were quantified among different shrimp growth stages in the aquaculture ponds in the Min River Estuary (MRE) and Jiulong River Estuary (JRE), southeast China. Significant differences in the nutrient production and uptake rates in the overlying water were observed among the three growth stages and two estuaries. The temporal variations of DOC and DIC production rates in both estuarine ponds closely followed the seasonal cycle of temperature, while the difference in DOC and DIC production rates between the two estuaries was likely caused by differences in water salinity. The changes in the production and uptake rates of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (N-NOx− and N-NH4+) and P-PO43− in the water column over time were partly related to the interactions between thermal conditions and phytoplankton biomass (e.g., chlorophyll a concentrations) in the ponds. Our results demonstrate the complex dynamics and environmental risk of dissolved nutrients in subtropical shrimp ponds, and call for a more effective management of nutrient-laden wastewater in safeguarding the long-term sustainability of aquaculture production.

Influence of eco-substrate addition on organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus budgets of intensive aquaculture ponds of the Pearl River, China

Abstract:Eco-substrates were developed to control pollution created in pond-based intensive aquaculture. In this study, organic carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus budgets and concentrations were quantified to determine if restoring eco-substrate is an effective method to reverse the effects of pollution. The experiment was performed in 1.0 hm2 ponds with and without the addition of eco-substrate, i.e. treatment and control groups, respectively. Results showed that eco-substrate significantly reduced ammonia nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, total organic carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus in the water of intensive aquaculture ponds (P < .05). The water accumulation of organic carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in the treatment group was significantly lower than that in the control group water (P < .05), as was the sediment accumulation of organic carbon and nitrogen (P < .05); no significant difference was found in the sediment accumulation of phosphorus (P > .05). The utilization efficiency of organic carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus of the eco-substrate group was significantly higher than that of the control group (P < .05). Therefore, eco-substrate could significantly improve water quality, reduce nutrient accumulation, and improve the utilization efficiency of nutrients. Nonetheless, China's large aquaculture industry emits 4.19 × 105 tons of organic carbon, 2.79 × 105 tons of nitrogen, and 2.89 × 104 tons of phosphorus annually. Thus, additional studies are necessary to improve treatment methods for large-scale aquaculture effluents.
Assessment of bioavailable nitrogen and phosphorus content in the sediments of Indian mangroves

Abstract:Efficient nutrient cycling and adequate sediment bioavailable nutrient supply are considered to be the two most important factors regulating the high productivity and subsequent carbon sequestration by mangrove ecosystems. We assessed spatial variability and the possible regulating factors of sediment bioavailable nutrients (nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P)) and surface water-dissolved nutrients (N, P and silicate (Si)) in the five ecologically important mangrove ecosystems along the east and west coast of India during dry season. Higher bioavailable nitrogen concentrations in the sediments were recorded in Coringa mangroves (36.27 ± 14.7 μg g−1) and Bhitarkanika (18.54 ± 5.9 μg g−1) mangroves in the east coast followed by Karnataka (15.51 ± 8.26 μg g−1), Goa, (10.18 ± 9.96 μg g−1) and Kerala (6.36 ± 5.05 μg g−1) mangroves in the west coast. The dissolved inorganic nutrients in the mangrove waters ranged between 5.1 and 220.9 μmol l−1 for N and 0.07 and 3.9 μmol l−1 for P. These results indicated that terrestrial inputs, in situ remineralization and prevalent anoxic conditions regulated sediment nutrient content in these ecosystems, whereas the higher ammonium in the sediments was attributed to the greater nutrient adsorption by finer particles. The stoichiometry of the bioavailable nutrients (N, P) in the mangrove sediments deviated drastically from the Redfield ratio, and strong P limitation was recorded in most of the ecosystems. The results highlighted the potential role of sediment particle size and physiochemical (salinity and pH) properties in regulating bioavailable nutrient dynamics in mangrove sediments.

Abstract:The impoundment of rivers by dams has significantly modified sedimentation patterns and trophic structures. As a result, the algal-derived organic matter (OM), as opposed to terrestrial-derived OM, plays an increasingly important role along the river-reservoir gradient. This study utilized water-sediment microcosms to explore the impacts of allochthonous and autochthonous OM deposition on benthic nutrient dynamics mediated by microbial food webs. Our results revealed that OM addition led to increased fluxes of NH 4 + and CO 2 , with the highest flux induced by cyanobacteria OM, followed by diatom and allochthonous OM. N 2 release flux was promoted by allochthonous and diatom OM deposition but inhibited by cyanobacteria OM deposition. The amendment of autochthonous OM increased the activity of dehydrogenase and urease, while allochthonous OM with a higher C/N ratio enhanced the catalytic abilities of polyphenol oxidase and β-glucosidase. Furthermore, OM deposition significantly reduced microbial community richness and diversity, except for eukaryotic richness, and induced pronounced changes in bacterial and eukaryotic community structures. Allochthonous OM deposition stimulated the utilization of bacteria and protozoan on native OM, resulting in a positive priming effect of 26.78 %. In contrast, diatom and cyanobacteria OM additions exerted negative priming effects of −44.53 % and −29.76 %, respectively. Bayesian stable isotope mixing models showed that diatom OM was primarily absorbed by protozoan and metazoan, while cyanobacteria OM was more easily decomposed by bacteria and transferred to higher trophic levels through microbial food webs. In addition, bacterial ammonification accounted for 74.5 % of NH 4 + release in the allochthonous OM deposition treatment, whereas eukaryotic excretion contributed separately 83.3 % and 83.1 % to NH 4 + release in the diatom and cyanobacteria OM addition treatments. These findings highlight the significance of accounting for the regulatory capacity of OM deposition when studying benthic metabolism within river-reservoir systems.

Abstract:Mangroves are highly productive ecosystems that supply carbon and nutrients to the coastal food web from autochthonous and allochthonous sources. The fluctuations in the quantity of these sources influence bacterial metabolic activity which is, in turn, directly linked to the trophic food web. Our study, reports the inter-annual variability of nutrients and dissolved organic carbon in addition to their impact on phytoplankton and bacterial biomass, respiration and production in the Mandovi and Zuari estuaries of southwest India. Radio-labeled substrates, NaH 14 CO 3 , and titrated thymidine ( 3 H-TdR) were employed to quantify primary productivity (PP) and bacterial productivity (BP), respectively. Our findings revealed that community respiration exceeded PP indicating a state of heterotrophy. Similarly, bacterial respiration (BR) exceeded BP suggesting that carbon is predominantly utilized for respiratory rather than assimilatory action. Analysis of BP/PP (Mandovi 0.48 to 4.46; Zuari 1.72 to 3.81) and PP/BR (Mandovi 0.02 to 1.42; Zuari 0.05 to 1.00) ratios showed considerable seasonal variability. Lower bacterial growth efficiency observed in Mandovi (average 30.35%) than Zuari (average 38.38%) suggests greater productivity in Zuari. Uncoupling of phytoplankton and bacteria during the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons implied heterotrophic conditions in both Mandovi and Zuari. Principal component analysis indicated distinct temporal variations in salinity, dissolved inorganic nutrients and dissolved organic carbon which had a significant influence on the trophic status of the mangrove and estuarine waters This study highlights the critical role of allochthonous organic matter in driving coastal heterotrophy and shaping the seasonal trophic dynamics in estuarine ecosystems.

Abstract:Dynamics of phytoplankton in coastal waters is a function of nutrient influx and the present study investigated the trend in nutrient dynamics and phytoplankton abundance of Daya Bay (DB), South China Sea, from 1986 to 2020. Dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), Dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP) and Silicates were measured. DIN concentration exhibited an increasing trend over the last decades, and it was above the threshold for the phytoplankton growth. DIP level showed a significant decreasing trend throughout the studied period, falling below the threshold for phytoplankton growth in the last decade, where harmful algal blooms were dominated by the dinoflagellates. Long-term anthropogenic influences severely change influx of DIN, DIP, and silicates which in turn shape the architecture of phytoplankton communities. Thus, the understanding of the complex interaction between nutrient influx, anthropogenic activities and dynamics of both water quality and biological elements are particularly important to decide criteria to manage coastal ecosystems.
Effects of daily nitrogen and phosphorus input on planktonic community metabolism in a semi-enclosed bay by mesocosm experiment

Abstract:Planktonic metabolism plays an important role in affecting the energy transportation and carbon cycle of the marine ecosystem. However, its regulation mechanism remains unclear under the continuously exogenous nutrient inputs in nearshore waters. In this study, a mesocosm experiment was conducted in a semi-enclosed bay, the Daya Bay, to explore the responses of plankton metabolic balance and community structure to a concentration gradient of daily nitrogen and phosphorus inputs. The results showed that nutrient enrichments promoted phytoplankton biomass, total primary production, and community respiration, and the promoting effect enhanced alongwith the increase of nutrient concentration. However, the net community production fluctuated more violently between autotrophic and heterotrophic with the increase of nutrient inputs and tended to be more heterotrophic from the 5th day to the 10th day of the experiment. In addition, the daily flux of nitrogen and phosphorus, 2 μmol/(L·d) and 0.066 μmol/(Lμd), respectively, could be regarded as a potential threshold for ecosystem stability and health, since most of the ecological characteristics related to plankton structure and function have undergone significant changes when the nutrient level is higher than that. In the nearshore enclosed or semi-enclosed waters, nutrient from continuous terrigenous input is likely to be concentrated and exceed this level, indicating the ecological risks due to the metabolic unbalance and the deterioration of plankton community structure.
