Abstract:With the improving energy resolution of transitionedge sensor (TES) based microcalorimeters, performance verification and calibration of these detectors has become increasingly challenging, especially in the energy range below 1 keV where fluorescent atomic X-ray lines have linewidths that are wider than the detector energy resolution and require impractically high statistics to determine the gain and deconvolve the instrumental profile. Better behaved calibration sources such as grating monochromators are too cumbersome for space missions and are difficult to use in the lab. As an alternative, we are exploring the use of pulses of 3 eV optical photons delivered by an optical fiber to generate combs of known energies with known arrival times. Here, we discuss initial results of this technique obtained with 2 eV and 0.7 eV resolution X-ray microcalorimeters. With the 2 eV detector, we have achieved photon number resolution for pulses with mean photon number up to 133 (corresponding to 0.4 keV).

Abstract:At Argonne National Laboratory, we are developing hard X-ray (2 to 20 keV) Transition Edge Sensor (TES) arrays for beamline science. The significantly improved energy resolution provided by superconducting detectors compared to semiconductor-based energy-dispersive detectors, but with better collection efficiency than wavelength-dispersive instruments, will enable greatly improved X-ray emission and absorption spectroscopic measurements. A prototype instrument with 24 microwave-frequency multiplexed pixels is now in testing at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) 1-BM beamline. Initial measurements show an energy resolution ten times better (150 eV compared to < 15 eV) than the silicon-drift detectors currently available to APS beamline users, and in particular demonstrate the ability to resolve closely-spaced emission lines in samples containing multiple transition metal elements, such as integrated circuits. Comparing fluorescence spectra of integrated circuits measured with our TESs at the beamline to those measured with silicon detectors, we find emission lines and elements largely hidden (e.g. Hf alongside Cu) from a semiconductor-based detector but well resolved by a TES. This directly shows the strengths of TES-based instruments in fluorescence mapping.

Abstract:Energy resolution is an important figure of merit for TES microcalorimeter. We propose a laser system to measure the energy resolution of TES microcalorimeter with a 1550 nm laser source. Compared to method that characterizes the performance by irradiating the detector using X-ray photons from a radioactive source placed inside the refrigerator, our system is safer and more convenient. The feasibility of this system has been demonstrated in the measurement of an Al/Ti bilayer TES microcalorimeter. In this experiment, the tested detector showed a energy resolution of 72 eV in the energy range from 0.2 keV to 0.9 keV

Abstract:We are designing an array of transition-edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeters for a soft X-ray spectrometer at the Linac Coherent Light Source at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory to coincide with upgrades to the free electron laser facility. The complete spectrometer will have 1000 TES pixels with energy resolution of 0.5 eV full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) for incident energies below 1 keV while maintaining pulse decay-time constants shorter than 100 μs. Historically, TES pixels have often been designed for a particular scientific application via a combination of simple scaling relations and trial-and-error experimentation with device geometry. We have improved upon this process by using our understanding of transition physics to guide TES design. Using the two-fluid approximation of the phase-slip line model for TES resistance, we determine how the geometry and critical temperature of a TES will affect the shape of the transition. We have used these techniques to design sensors with a critical temperature of 55 mK. The best sensors achieve an energy resolution of 0.75 eV FWHM at 1.25 keV. Building upon this result, we show how the next generation of sensors can be designed to reach our goal of 0.5 eV resolution.

Abstract:An important and fast-growing technology in the realm of cryogenic detectors has recently been applied to beamline science: the superconducting Transition-Edge Sensor (TES). A TES consists of a thin metal film that is held in the superconducting-to-normal transition by a voltage bias. When a single X-ray photon is absorbed, the temperature and resistance of the film increase, which causes a negative-going current pulse with amplitude proportional to the deposited energy. The thin-film thermometer is typically coupled to a photon absorber composed of a high atomic number element such as bismuth or gold, so efficiencies near unity are possible for X-rays up to 10 keV. TESs are an example of a broader class of sensors called microcalorimeters that measure energetic events through a change in temperature. The energy resolution of a well-designed microcalorimeter is set by thermodynamic power fluctuations between the sensor and the local heat bath as well as by additional noise terms such as the Johnson noise in the sensing element. The energy resolution ΔE of a microcalorimeter is proportional to (kbT2C)1/2 where T is the sensor temperature and C is its specific heat. The temperature dependence of ΔE makes it advantageous to operate TESs at the lowest temperatures that can be conveniently reached, typically 0.1 K. For X-ray measurements between 1–10 keV, the dependence of ΔE on C limits the C of individual sensors to about 10−12 J/K, corresponding to device areas near 0.1 mm2 [1].

Abstract:We present results on phonon quasidiffusion and Transition Edge Sensor (TES) studies in a large, 3 inch diameter, 1 inch thick [100] high purity germanium crystal, cooled to 50 mK in the vacuum of a dilution refrigerator, and exposed with 59.5 keV gamma-rays from an Am-241 calibration source. We compare calibration data with results from a Monte Carlo which includes phonon quasidiffusion and the generation of phonons created by charge carriers as they are drifted across the detector by ionization readout channels. The phonon energy is then parsed into TES based phonon readout channels and input into a TES simulator.

Abstract:Optical transition-edge sensors have shown energy resolution for resolving the number of incident photons at the telecommunication wavelength. Higher energy resolution is required for biological imaging and microscope spectroscopy. In this paper, we report on a Au/Ti (10/20 nm) bilayer TES that showed high energy resolution. This was achieved by lowering the critical temperature Tc to 115 mK and the resultant energy resolution was 67 meV full width at half maximum (FWHM) at 0.8 eV. When Tc was lowered to 115 mK, the theoretical resolution would scaled up to 30 meV FWHM, considering that the typical energy resolution of optical TESs is 150 meV and Tc is 300 mK. To investigate the gap between the theoretical expectation (30 meV) and the measured value (67 meV), we measured its complex impedance and current noise. We found excess Johnson noise in the TES and an excess Johnson term M was 1.5 at a bias point where the resistance was 10% of normal resistance. For reference, the TES was compared with a TES showing typical energy resolution (156 meV FWHM). We will discuss what improved the energy resolution and what might have been the limiting factor on it.

Developments on frequency domain multiplexing readout for large arrays of transition-edge sensor X-ray micro-calorimeters

Abstract:At SRON we have been developing X-ray TES micro-calorimeters as backup technology for the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) of the Athena mission, demonstrating excellent resolving powers both under DC and AC bias. We also developed a frequency-domain multiplexing (FDM) readout technology, where each TES is coupled to a superconducting band-pass LC resonator and AC biased at MHz frequencies through a common readout line. The TES signals are summed at the input of a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), which performs a first amplification at cryogenic stage. Custom analog front-end electronics and digital boards take care of further amplifying the signals at room temperature and of the modulation/demodulation of the TES signals and bias carrier, respectively. We report on the most recent developments on our FDM technology, which involves a two-channel demonstration with a total of 70 pixels with a summed energy resolution of 2.34 +/- 0.02 eV at 5.9 keV without spectral performance degradation with respect to single-channel operation. Moreover, we discuss prospects towards the scaling-up to a larger multiplexing factor up to 78 pixels per channel in a 1-6 MHz readout bandwidth.

Simulation Method for Investigating the Use of Transition-Edge Sensors as Spectroscopic Electron Detectors

Abstract:Transition-edge sensors (TESs) are capable of highly accurate single particle energy measurement. TESs have been used for a wide range of photon detection applications, particularly in astronomy, but very little consideration has been given to their capabilities as electron calorimeters. Existing electron spectrometers require electron filtering optics to achieve energy discrimination, but this step discards the vast majority of electrons entering the instrument. TESs require no such energy filtering, meaning they could provide orders of magnitude improvement in measurement rate. To investigate the capabilities of TESs in electron spectroscopy, a simulation pipeline has been devised. The pipeline allows the results of a simulated experiment to be compared with the actual spectrum of the incident beam, thereby allowing measurement accuracy and efficiency to be studied. Using Fisher information, the energy resolution of the simulated detectors was also calculated, allowing the intrinsic limitations of the detector to be separated from the specific data analysis method used. The simulation platform has been used to compare the performance of TESs with existing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysers. TESs cannot match the energy resolution of XPS analysers for high-precision measurements but have comparable or better resolutions for high count rate applications. The measurement rate of a typical XPS analyser can be matched by an array of 10 TESs with 120 microsecond response times and there is significant scope for improvement, without compromising energy resolution, by increasing array size.

Abstract:Transition-edge sensors are a type of superconducting detector that offers high energy resolution based on their sharp resistance-temperature feature in the superconducting-to-normal transition. TES X-ray microcalorimeters have typically been designed and used for spectroscopic applications. In this work, we present a design optimization for a TES X-ray microcalorimeter array for high-energy scattering and diffraction measurements. In particular, Compton scattering provides information about the electron momentum distribution, while energy dispersive diffraction provides structural information about dense engineering materials. Compton scattering and energy dispersive diffraction experiments must be conducted in the very hard X-ray regime (~ 100 keV), demanding a high X-ray stopping power in the detector; therefore, an absorber with a large heat capacity is needed in conjunction with the TES. In addition, both applications would benefit from an array composed of parallel strips. We present a design for a TES X-ray microcalorimeter optimized for such applications. In particular, we model the longitudinal position dependence due to the finite thermal diffusion time in the absorber.

Abstract:Transition Edge Sensors (TESs) are characterized by the intrinsic figure of merit to resolve both the energy and the statistical distribution of the incident photons. These properties lead TES devices to become the best single photon detector for quantum technology experiments. For a TES based on titanium and gold has been reached, at telecommunication wavelength, an unprecedented intrinsic energy resolution (0.113 eV). The uncertainties analysis of both energy resolution and photon state assignment has been discussed. The thermal properties of the superconductive device have been studied by fitting the bias curve to evaluate theoretical limit of the energy resolution.

Abstract:Transition edge sensor microcalorimeters can measure x-ray and gamma-ray energies with very high energy resolution and high photon-collection efficiency. For this technology to reach its full potential in future x-ray observatories, each sensor must be able to measure hundreds or even thousands of photon energies per second. Current "optimal filtering" approaches to achieve the best possible energy resolution work only for photons well isolated in time, a requirement in direct conflict with the need for high-rate measurements. We describe a new analysis procedure to allow fitting for the pulse height of all photons even in the presence of heavy pulse pile-up. In the limit of isolated pulses, the technique reduces to the standard optimal filtering with long records. We employ reasonable approximations to the noise covariance function in order to render multi-pulse fitting computationally viable even for very long data records. The technique is employed to analyze x-ray emission spectra at 600 eV and 6 keV at rates up to 250 counts per second in microcalorimeters having exponential signal decay times of approximately 1.2 ms.

Abstract:Large arrays of superconducting transition-edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeters are becoming the key technology for future space-based X-ray observatories and ground-based experiments in the fields of astrophysics, laboratory astrophysics, plasma physics, particle physics and material analysis. Thanks to their sharp superconducting-to-normal transition, TESs can achieve very high sensitivity in detecting small temperature changes at very low temperature. TES based X-ray detectors are non-dispersive spectrometers bringing together high resolving power, imaging capability and high-quantum efficiency simultaneously. In this chapter, we highlight the basic principles behind the operation and design of TESs, and their fundamental noise limits. We will further elaborate on the key fundamental physics processes that guide the design and optimization of the detector. We will then describe pulse-processing and important calibration considerations for space flight instruments, before introducing novel multi-pixel TES designs and discussing applications in future X-ray space missions over the coming decades.

Abstract:Studies of astromaterials provide valuable insights into the formation and evolution of the solar system. To analyze such astromaterials on a sub-micrometer scale, one of the most useful tools is energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) in conjunction with scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). The conventional semiconductor-based EDS system is sometimes insufficient to resolve emission lines at closely adjacent energies. A transition edge sensor (TES) X-ray microcalorimeter is a promising solution to overcome this problem. We developed a 64-pixel TES X-ray microcalorimeter array which had an energy resolution of approximately 7 eV (FWHM) at an energy band from B Kα to Cu Kα. However, the counting rate was only approximately 1000 count/s/array. The distance between the detector and the sample is 30 cm, limited by the stage of the refrigerator. Therefore, an X-ray polycapillary is used to focus the X-ray, which focus size is 5 mm in diameter, resulting in a detection efficiency of only 5%. To increase the effective area, we developed a large size absorber with a large-scale array. A three-dimensional structure was created to fill the dead space between TES pixels. Additionally, an array of 224 elements was made to increase the detection efficiency by a factor of 10. In this paper, we provide more details of design, fabrication process of the overhang absorber, and device performance.

Abstract:High-efficiency microcalorimeter arrays are required as imaging spectroscopy for X-ray microscopy in general and for astrophysics. We have developed in-house an array of Transition Edge Sensor (TES) X-ray microcalorimeters with mushroom-type absorbers which have a large area of square with multiple support stems. Insufficient thermal conductivity may degrade the energy resolution. We construct a 3D FEM simulation with thermal conduction and electric feedback circuit of TES. Estimated physical parameters were incorporated into the simulation to reproduce the measured pulse waveforms. As a result, the effect of the large absorber on the degradation of energy resolution was small for the mushroom-type absorber TES calorimeter.

Abstract:Design of TES microcalorimeters requires a tradeoff between resolution and dynamic range. Often, experimenters will require linearity for the highest energy signals, which requires additional heat capacity be added to the detector. This results in a reduction of low energy resolution in the detector. We derive and demonstrate an algorithm that allows operation far into the nonlinear regime with little loss in spectral resolution. We use a least squares optimal filter that varies with photon energy to accommodate the nonlinearity of the detector and the non-stationarity of the noise. The fitting process we use can be seen as an application of differential geometry. This recognition provides a set of well-developed tools to extend our work to more complex situations. The proper calibration of a nonlinear microcalorimeter requires a source with densely spaced narrow lines. A pulsed laser multi-photon source is used here, and is seen to be a powerful tool for allowing us to develop practical systems with significant detector nonlinearity. The combination of our analysis techniques and the multi-photon laser source create a powerful tool for increasing the performance of future TES microcalorimeters.

Abstract:Exotic atom experiments place transition-edge-sensor (TES) microcalorimeter arrays in a high-energy charged particle rich environment. When a high-energy charged particle passes through the silicon substrate of a TES array, a large amount of energy is deposited and small pulses are generated across multiple pixels in the TES array due to thermal crosstalk. We have developed analysis techniques to assess and reduce the effects of charged particle events on exotic atom X-ray measurements. Using this technique, the high-energy and low-energy components of the X-ray peaks due to pileup are eliminated, improving the energy resolution from 6.6 eV to 5.7 eV at 6.9 keV.

Fabrication of X-ray Microcalorimeter Focal Planes Composed of Two Distinct Pixel Types

Abstract:We are developing superconducting transition-edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeter focal planes for versatility in meeting specifications of X-ray imaging spectrometers including high count-rate, high energy resolution, and large field-of-view. In particular, a focal plane composed of two sub-arrays: one of fine-pitch, high count-rate devices and the other of slower, larger pixels with similar energy resolution, offers promise for the next generation of astrophysics instruments, such as the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) instrument on the European Space Agency's Athena mission. We have based the sub-arrays of our current design on successful pixel designs that have been demonstrated separately. Pixels with an all gold X-ray absorber on 50 and 75 micron scales where the Mo/Au TES sits atop a thick metal heatsinking layer have shown high resolution and can accommodate high count-rates. The demonstrated larger pixels use a silicon nitride membrane for thermal isolation, thinner Au and an added bismuth layer in a 250 micron square absorber. To tune the parameters of each sub-array requires merging the fabrication processes of the two detector types. We present the fabrication process for dual production of different X-ray absorbers on the same substrate, thick Au on the small pixels and thinner Au with a Bi capping layer on the larger pixels to tune their heat capacities. The process requires multiple electroplating and etching steps, but the absorbers are defined in a single ion milling step. We demonstrate methods for integrating heatsinking of the two types of pixel into the same focal plane consistent with the requirements for each sub-array, including the limiting of thermal crosstalk. We also discuss fabrication process modifications for tuning the intrinsic transition temperature (Tc) of the bilayers for the different device types through variation of the bilayer thicknesses. The latest results on these "hybrid" arrays will be presented.

Abstract:We are developing X-ray microcalorimeters as a backup option for the baseline detectors in the X-IFU instrument on board the ATHENA space mission led by ESA and to be launched in the early 2030s.5$\times$5 mixed arrays with TiAu transition-edge sensor (TES), which have different high aspect ratios and thus high resistances, have been designed and fabricated to meet the energy resolution requirement of the X-IFU instrument. Such arrays can also be used to optimise the performance of the Frequency Domain Multiplexing (FDM) readout and lead to the final steps for the fabrication of a large detector array. In this work we present the experimental results from tens of the devices with an aspect ratio (length-to-width) ranging from 1-to-1 up to 6-to-1, measured in a single-pixel mode with a FDM readout system developed at SRON/VTT. We observed a nominal energy resolution of about 2.5 eV at 5.9 keV at bias frequencies ranging from 1 to 5 MHz. These detectors are proving to be the best TES microcalorimeters ever reported in Europe, being able to meet not only the requirements of the X-IFU instrument, but also those of other future challenging X-ray space missions, fundamental physics experiments, plasma characterization and material analysis.
