Abstract:Non-renormalizable Newton maps are rigid. More precisely, we prove that their Julia sets carry no invariant line fields and that a topological conjugacy between them is equivalent to a quasiconformal conjugacy.

Abstract:Too little mathematics has been written in prose. Thus we prove here, via a fantasy novellette, that a locally L-bilipschitz mapping $f \colon X \to Y$ between uniformly Ahlfors $q$-regular, complete and locally compact path-metric spaces $X$ and $Y$ is an $L$-bilipschitz map when $Y$ is simply connected. The motivation for such a result arises from studying the asymptotic values of BLD-mappings with an empty branch set; see e.g. [L17]. As far as the author is aware, the result is new, even though it would not be hard for specialists in the field to prove. The proof is essentially a modest extension of the ideas in [L17] in a more general setting when the branch set is empty.

Abstract:In 1980s, Thurston established a topological characterization theorem for postcritically finite rational maps. In this paper, a decomposition theorem for a class of postcritically infinite branched covering termed Herman map is developed. It's shown that every Herman map can be decomposed along a stable multicurve into finitely many Siegel maps and Thurston maps, such that the combinations and rational realizations of these resulting maps essentially dominate the original one. This result is motivated by a non-expanding version of McMullen's problem, and Thurston's theory on characterization of rational maps. It enables us to prove a Thurston-type theorem for rational maps with Herman rings.
The Newlander-Nirenberg theorem for complex $b$-manifolds

Abstract:Melrose defined the $b$-tangent bundle of a smooth manifold $M$ with boundary as the vector bundle whose sections are vector fields on $M$ tangent to the boundary. Mendoza defined a complex $b$-manifold as a manifold with boundary together with an involutive splitting of the complexified $b$-tangent bundle into complex conjugate factors. In this article, we prove complex $b$-manifolds have a single local model depending only on dimension. This can be thought of as the Newlander-Nirenberg theorem for complex $b$-manifolds: there are no ``local invariants''. Our proof uses Mendoza's existing result that complex $b$-manifolds do not have ``formal local invariants'' and a singular coordinate change trick to leverage the classical Newlander-Nirenberg theorem.

Abstract:Branched coverings boast a rich history, ranging from the ramification of Riemann surfaces to the realization of 3-manifolds as coverings branched over knots and spanning both geometric topology and algebraic geometry. This work delves into branched coverings "à la Fox" of ( G , X )-manifolds, encompassing three main avenues: Firstly, we introduce a comprehensive class of singular ( G , X )-manifolds, elucidating elementary theory paired with illustrative examples to showcase its efficacy and universality. Secondly, building on Montesinos' work, we revisit and augment the prevailing knowledge, formulating a Galois theory tailored for such branched coverings. This includes a detailed portrayal of the fiber above branching points. Lastly, we identify local attributes that guarantee the existence of developing maps for singular ( G , X )-manifolds within the branched coverings framework. Notably, we pinpoint conditions that ensure the existence of developing maps for these singular manifolds. This research proves especially pertinent for non-metric singular ( G , X )-manifolds like those of Lorentzian or projective nature, as discussed by Barbot, Bonsante, Suhyoung Choi, Danciger, Seppi, Schlenker, and the author, among others. While examples are sprinkled throughout, a standout application presented is a uniformization theorem "à la Mess" for singular locally Minkowski manifolds exhibiting BTZ-like singularities.

Abstract:Let G be an arbitrary (not necessarily isomorphic to a closed subgroup of ) complex Lie group, U a complex manifold and a principal G -bundle on U . We introduce and study the space of bundle almost complex structures of Hölder class on P . To any we associate an -valued form of type (0,2) on U which should be interpreted as the obstruction to the integrability of J . For we have whereas, for , is a form with distribution coefficients. Let with . We prove that J admits locally J -pseudo-holomorphic sections of class if and only if . If this is the case, J defines a holomorphic reduction of the underlying -bundle of P in the sense of the theory of principal bundles on complex manifolds. The proof is based on classical regularity results for the -Neumann operator on compact, strictly pseudo-convex complex manifolds with boundary. The result will be used in forthcoming articles dedicated to moduli spaces of holomorphic bundles (on a compact complex manifold X ) framed along a real hypersurface .

Monodromy representations of completed coverings

Abstract:In this paper we consider completed coverings that are branched coverings in the sense of Fox. For completed coverings between PL manifolds we give a characterization of the existence of a monodromy representation and the existence of a locally compact monodromy representation. These results stem from a characterization for the discreteness of a completed normal covering. We also show that completed coverings admitting a monodromy representations are discrete and that the image of the branch set is closed.

Abstract:It is proved that any (repetitive) Riemannian manifold of bounded geometry can be realized as a leaf of some (minimal) Riemannian matchbox manifold without holonomy. Our methods can be adapted to achieve Cantor transversals or a prescribed holonomy covering, but then the manifold may not be realized as a dense leaf.

The universal property of bordism of commuting involutions

Abstract:We propose a formalism to capture the structure of the equivariant bordism rings of smooth manifolds with commuting involutions. We introduce the concept of an oriented el$_2^{RO}$-algebra, an algebraic structure featuring representation graded rings for all elementary abelian 2-groups, connected by restriction homomorphisms, a pre-Euler class, and an inverse Thom class; this data is subject to one exactness property. Besides equivariant bordism, oriented global ring spectra also give rise to oriented el$_2^{RO}$-algebras, so examples abound. Inverting the inverse Thom classes yields a global 2-torsion group law. In this sense, our oriented el$_2^{RO}$-algebras are delocalized generalizations of global 2-torsion group laws. Our main result shows that equivariant bordism for elementary abelian 2-groups is an initial oriented el$_2^{RO}$-algebra. Several other interesting equivariant homology theories can also be characterized, on elementary abelian 2-groups, by similar universal properties. We prove that stable equivariant bordism is an initial el$_2^{RO}$-algebra with an invertible orientation; that Bredon homology with constant mod 2 coefficients is an initial el$_2^{RO}$-algebra with an additive orientation; and that Borel equivariant homology with mod 2 coefficients is an initial el$_2^{RO}$-algebra with an orientation that is both additive and invertible.

This characterization is formulated in terms of the existence of a bypass that is disjoint from the given family away from the attaching region. Logarithmic concavity of bimatroids

Abstract:A bimatroid is a matroid-like generalization of the collection of regular minors of a matrix. In this article, we use the theory of Lorentzian polynomials to study the logarithmic concavity of natural sequences associated to bimatroids. Bimatroids can be used to characterize morphisms of matroids and this observation (originally due to Kung) allows us to prove a weak version of logarithmic concavity of the number of bases of a morphism of matroids. This is weaker than the original result by Eur and Huh; it nevertheless provides us with a new perspective on Mason's log-concavity conjecture for independent sets of matroids. We finally show that for realizable bimatroids, the regular minor polynomial is a volume polynomial. Applied to morphisms of matroids, this shows that the weak basis generating polynomial of a morphism is a volume polynomial; this confirms a conjecture of Eur--Huh for morphisms of nullity $\leq 1$ and gives an algebro-geometric explanation for Mason's log-concavity conjecture in the realizable case.

Rigidity of braid group actions on $\mathbb{R}$ and of low-genus mapping class group actions on $S^1$

Abstract:Every nontrivial action of the braid group $B_n$ on $\mathbb{R}$ by orientation-preserving homeomorphisms yields, up to conjugation by a homeomorphism of $\mathbb{R}$, a representation $\rho : B_n \rightarrow \mathrm{H\widetilde{ome}o}_+(S^1)$ and therefore determines a translation number for every element of $B_n$. In this manuscript we offer a simple characterisation of which actions of $B_n$ on $\mathbb{R}$ produce translation numbers that agree with those arising from the standard Nielsen-Thurston action on $\mathbb{R}$. Our approach is to prove an analogous statement concerning left orderings of $B_n$ via a technique that uses the space of left orderings of $B_n$, the isolated points in this space, and the natural conjugacy action of $B_n$. We use this result to extend recent rigidity results of Mann and Wolff concerning mapping class group actions on $S^1$ to the case of low-genus surfaces with marked points.

Abstract:In this paper we give equational presentations of the varieties of {\em integral bounded residuated lattice-ordered commutative monoids} (bounded residuated lattices for short) satisfying the \emph{General Apple Property} (GAP), that is, varieties in which all of its directly indecomposable members are local. This characterization is given by means of Boolean terms: \emph{A variety $\mathsf{V}$ of \brl s has GAP iff there is an unary term $b(x)$ such that $\mathsf{V}$ satisfies the equations $b(x)\lor\neg b(x)\approx \top$ and $(x^k\to b(x))\cdot(b(x)\to k.x)\approx \top$, for some $k>0$}. Using this characterization, we show that for any variety $\mathsf{V}$ of bounded residuated lattice satisfying GAP there is $k>0$ such that the equation $k.x\lor k.\neg x\approx \top$ holds in $\mathsf{V}$, that is, $\mathsf{V} \subseteq \mathsf{WL_\mathsf{k}}$. As a consequence we improve Theorem 5.7 of \cite{CT12}, showing in theorem that a\emph{ variety of \brls\ has Boolean retraction term if and only if there is $k>0$ such that it satisfies the equation $k.x^k\lor k.(\neg x)^k\approx\top$.} We also see that in Bounded residuated lattices GAP is equivalent to Boolean lifting property (BLP) and so, it is equivalent to quasi-local property (in the sense of \cite{GLM12}). Finally, we prove that a variety of \brl s has GAP and its semisimple members form a variety if and only if there exists an unary term which is simultaneously Boolean and radical for this variety.

On the regularity of the structure of branched immersions

Abstract:We show the existence of some special coordinate systems for expressing maps with branch points. These coordinates allow obtaining an explicit representation formula of branch immersions and understanding the regularity of some fundamental elements in the theory of R. D. Gulliver, R. Osserman and H. L. Royden. For conformal maps, we prove that these coordinates exist with certain regularity if and only if the mean curvature vector extends and is in a particular Hölder space. In the general case, we characterize this type of coordinate system. Also, using these coordinates, we study the regularity and behavior of curvatures near branch points.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a locally compact group and $\mu$ an admissible probability measure on $G$. Let $(B,\nu)$ be the universal topological Poisson $\mu$-boundary of $(G,\mu)$ and $\Pi_s(G)$ the universal minimal strongly proximal $G$-flow. This note is inspired by a recent result of Hartman and Kalantar. We show that for a locally compact second countable group $G$ the following conditions are equivalent: (i) the measure $\nu$ is the unique $\mu$-stationary measure on $B$, (ii) $(B,G) \cong (\Pi_s(G),G)$.

Abstract:We show that the space of continuous functions over a compact space X admits an equivalent pointwise-lowersemicontinuous locally uniformly rotund norm whenever X admits a fully closed map onto a compact Y such that C(Y) and the spaces of continuous functions over the fibers all admit such norms. A map is called fully closed if the intersection of the images of any two closed disjoint sets is finite. As a main corollary we obtain that C(X) is LUR renormable whenever X is a Fedorchuk compact of finite spectral height.

Abstract:Given a closed manifold M and a closed regular submanifold L , consider the corresponding locally convex space of conormal distributions, with its natural topology, and the strong dual of the space of conormal densities. It is shown that I is a barreled, ultrabornological, webbed, Montel, acyclic LF-space, and is a complete Montel space, which is a projective limit of bornological barreled spaces. In the case of codimension one, similar properties and additional descriptions are proved for the subspace of conormal distributions supported in L and for its strong dual . We construct a locally convex Hausdoff space J and a continuous linear map such that the sequence as well as the transpose sequence are short exact sequences in the category of continuous linear maps between locally convex spaces. Finally, it is shown that in the space of distributions. In another publication, these results are applied to prove a Lefschetz trace formula for a simple foliated flow on a compact foliated manifold . It describes a Lefschetz distribution defined by the induced action on the reduced cohomologies and of the complexes of leafwise currents that are conormal and dual-conormal at the leaves preserved by .

Abstract:The linear lattice of Riemann μ \mu -integrable functions on a completely regular space with a bounded positive Radon measure μ \mu is viewed as an extension of the linear lattice of bounded continuous functions. To characterize this Riemann extension, the new functional analysis category of c c -latlineals with refinements ( ≡ c r \equiv cr -latlineals) is introduced. On this basis, the procedure of c r cr -completion of certain order-boundary type is defined. The μ \mu -Riemann extension is shown to be the result of applying this procedure to the c r μ cr_{\mu } -latlineal of bounded continuous functions.

A framework unifying some bijections for graphs and its connection to Lawrence polytopes

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected graph. The Jacobian group (also known as the Picard group or sandpile group) of $G$ is a finite abelian group whose cardinality equals the number of spanning trees of $G$. The Jacobian group admits a canonical simply transitive action on the set $\mathcal{R}(G)$ of cycle-cocycle reversal classes of orientations of $G$. Hence one can construct combinatorial bijections between spanning trees of $G$ and $\mathcal{R}(G)$ to build connections between spanning trees and the Jacobian group. The BBY bijections and the Bernardi bijections are two important examples. In this paper, we construct a new family of such bijections that includes both. Our bijections depend on a pair of atlases (different from the ones in manifold theory) that abstract and generalize certain common features of the two known bijections. The definitions of these atlases are derived from triangulations and dissections of the Lawrence polytopes associated to $G$. The acyclic cycle signatures and cocycle signatures used to define the BBY bijections correspond to regular triangulations. Our bijections can extend to subgraph-orientation correspondences. Most of our results hold for regular matroids. We present our work in the language of fourientations, which are a generalization of orientations.
