Abstract:Maintaining biodiversity requires direct and indirect interspecific interactions. The study of direct interactions, including competition, predation, mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism, has greatly promoted the development of species coexistence theory'. However, as a simplified method to explain community assembly, direct interactions alone cannot adequately explain the coexistence of related species in the absence of indirect interactions. Indirect interactions can be defined as the impact of one species on another that is mediated or transmitted by a third, and they are considered to be a more complex and less understood type of interspecific interaction. During the past two decades, scientists have gradually realized that a type of density-mediated indirect interaction, known as intransitive competition, is ubiquitous in nature. Intransitive competition can be described as a game of "rockpaper-scissors" in which three species A, B and C have competitive ranks A>B>C>A. In this competitive mode, competitive exclusion between relative species is counteracted by mutual restrictiveness, and there are no "invincible" species in the community. Therefore, intransitive competition is an important factor in promoting species coexistence, which affects species distribution patterns, community structure and ecosystem functions. To summarize the theory' of intransitive competition, this paper discusses the definition, characteristics, and detection methods of intransitive competition and the main factors affecting intransitive competition as well. There are five formation modes of intransitive competition. Resource utilization mode occurs when species have different competitive abilities for resources. Life history mode arises if species cannot maintain an absolute competitive advantage throughout their life stages. Behavioral trade-off mode follows when species have different ways of acquiring resources. Competition trade-off mode and allelopathy mode require species to develop both aggressive and defensive survival strategies. Our paper also explores three characteristics of intransitive competition. First, the populations of species participating in intransitive competition often exhibit periodic fluctuations in their frequency. which are regulated by dynamic equilibrium. Second, intransitive competition systems involving an odd number of species can maintain community stability, whereas systems involving an even number of species will theoretically collapse. Finally, multiple intransitive competition loops may appear in the community, and intransitive competition may also be nested in other coexistence patterns. This nested feature makes intransitive competition difficult to detect and measure. Fortunately, current research methods such as competition matrix, transfer matrix and invasion growth rate model can be used to infer the existence of intransitive competition and quantify its prevalence and importance. Competitive rank has been considered as one of the most important factors affecting intransitive competition. The higher the coefficient of variation of competitive rank among species, the more negative impact on intransitive competition. At the same time, global-scale environmental changes could also be critical factors: drought increases the intransitive competition in the community, but eutrophication caused by land-use intensification reduces the intransitive competition. Functional traits are non-negligible because species traits adapted to high-productivity environments often impede the formation of intransitive competition. Finally, to promote the understanding of indirect interaction and multi-species coexistence strategies, we propose that future research on intransitive competition should focus on long-term controlled field experiments, coupled with theoretical considerations of high-order interactions, complex networks, and ecosystem function.

Abstract:Using a spatially explicit cellular automaton model with local competition, we investigate the potential for varied levels of competitive intransitivity (i.e., nonhierarchical competition) to promote species coexistence. As predicted, on average, increased levels of intransitivity result in more sustained coexistence within simulated communities, although the outcome of competition also becomes increasingly unpredictable. Interestingly, even a moderate degree of intransitivity within a community can promote coexistence, in terms of both the length of time until the first competitive exclusion and the number of species remaining in the community after 500 simulated generations. These results suggest that modest levels of intransitivity in nature, such as those that are thought to be characteristic of plant communities, can contribute to coexistence and, therefore, community-scale biodiversity. We explore a potential connection between competitive intransitivity and neutral theory, whereby competitive intransitivity may represent an important mechanism for "ecological equivalence."

Abstract:Historically, those ecological communities thought to be dominated by competitive interactions among their component species have been assumed to exhibit transitive competition, that is, a hierarchy of competitive strength from most dominant to most submissive. A surge of recent literature takes issue with this assumption and notes that some species in some communities are intransitive, where a rock/scissors/paper arrangement characterizes some components of some communities. We here propose a merging of these two ideas, wherein an intransitive subgroup of species connects with a distinct subcomponent that is organized hierarchically, such that the expected eventual takeover by the dominant competitor in the hierarchy is thwarted, and the entire community can be sustained. This means that the combination of transitive and intransitive structures can maintain many species even when competition is strong. Here, we develop this theoretical framework using a simple variant on the Lotka–Volterra competition equations to illustrate the process. We also present data for the ant community in a coffee agroecosystem in Puerto Rico, that appears to be organized in this way. A detailed study on one typical coffee farm illustrates an intransitive loop of three species that seems to maintain a distinct competitive community of at least 13 additional species.
Intransitive Stability Collapses Under the Influence of Dominant Competitors

Abstract:AbstractIntransitive competition has received much attention over the past decade. Indeed, these cyclic arrangements of species interactions have the potential to promote and stabilize species coexistence. However, the importance of intransitive interactions in real-world species-rich communities containing a mixture of hierarchic and intransitive interactions remains unknown. Here, using simulations, we explore the behavior of intransitive loops when they interact with outer competitors, as would be expected in real-world communities. Our results show that dominant competitors often cancel the beneficial effects of intransitive loops of inferior competitors. These results call for caution when inferring beneficial effects of intransitivity on species coexistence. Although intransitive loops are a frequent motif in competition networks, their positive effects on species coexistence may be less important than previously thought. The specific properties of a subnetwork-such as stabilization by intransitive loops-should thus not be interpreted independently of the global network.

Abstract:Pott's puffy tumor is an infrequent entity characterized by subperiosteal abscess associated with frontal bone osteomyelitis. It is usually seen as a complication of frontal sinusitis. Although cases, in patients of all ages have been reported, teenagers are the most frequently affected. Despite modern methods of diagnosis and treatment, 9 new cases in children, have been published in the last 7 years. This paper describes the case of 13-year-old boy with subperiosteal abscess resulting from exacerbation of chronic frontal sinusitis. Complete resolution occurred with an intensive antibiotic regime and drainage of frontal sinus and subperiosteal abscess.

Abstract:Abstract Competitive intransitivity, the existence of loops in competitive hierarchies, is one mechanism that can promote the local coexistence of competitors and maintain high local species diversity, although its prevalence and importance remain largely unknown. A full understanding of local community assembly needs knowledge of how transitive and intransitive competitive interactions are linked to species functional traits and the strength of biotic and abiotic filters. We apply a recently developed statistical tool to quantitative data on central European inland saltmarsh plant communities to infer causal relationships between soil characteristics, species occurrences and functional traits, and we estimated coefficients of competition. We found a predominance of intransitive competitive hierarchies. The proportion of such hierarchies was positively correlated with local species richness and compositional variability. Average soil characteristics were not correlated with competitive intransitivity, whereas high soil pH and the high variability in local pH and soil salinity decreased the overall impact of competition on community composition. In pairwise comparisons of species, dissimilarity in morphology, resource demand and reproductive phenology was significantly negatively correlated with differences in competitive performance, while higher environmental dissimilarity was particularly linked to intermediate degrees of competitive superiority. Our results suggest that habitat filtering for similar traits might intensify competitive interactions, but might also give rise to intransitive competitive loops that subsequently promote species coexistence and permit species’ functional equivalence. Intransitive competition appears to increase local diversity and small scale‐species turnover. The observed local differences in competitive structures suggest frequent competitive plasticity and context‐dependent competitive interactions. Finally, our results support the view that local abundance distributions can be used to infer the strength and outcome of competitive interactions. Synthesis . Our results confirm that intransitive competitive interactions might be a strong force structuring local plant communities. Intransitivity needs to be considered when studying plant community assembly and species co‐existence.

Abstract:Anthropogenic habitat destruction leads to habitat loss and fragmentation, both of which interact to determine how biodiversity changes at the landscape level. While the detrimental effects of habitat loss are clear, there is a long-standing debate about the role of habitat fragmentation per se. We identify the influence of the total habitat amount lost as a modulator of the relationship between habitat fragmentation and biodiversity. Using a simple metacommunity model characterized by colonization–competition (C–C) trade-offs, we show that the magnitude of habitat loss can induce a unimodal response of biodiversity to habitat fragmentation. When habitat loss is low, habitat fragmentation promotes coexistence by suppressing competitively dominant species, while habitat fragmentation at high levels of habitat loss can shape many smaller isolated patches that drive extinctions of superior competitors. While the C–C trade-off is not the only mechanism for biodiversity maintenance, the modulation of habitat fragmentation effects by habitat loss is probably common. Reanalysis of a globally distributed dataset of fragmented animal and plant metacommunities shows an overall pattern that supports this hypothesis, suggesting a resolution to the debate regarding the relative importance of positive versus negative fragmentation effects.

Complex nonmonotonic responses of biodiversity to habitat destruction

Abstract:It has typically been assumed that habitat destruction, characterized by habitat loss and fragmentation, has consistently negative effects on biodiversity. While numerous empirical studies have shown the detrimental effects of habitat loss, debate continues as to whether habitat fragmentation has universally negative effects. To explore the effects of habitat fragmentation, we developed a simple model for site-occupancy dynamics in fragmented landscapes. With the model, we demonstrate that a competition-colonization trade-off can result in nonlinear oscillatory responses in biodiversity to both habitat loss and fragmentation. However, the overall pattern of habitat loss reducing species richness is still established, in line with empirical observations. Interestingly, the existence of localized oscillations in biodiversity can explain the mixed responses of species richness to habitat fragmentation per se observed in nature, thereby reconciling the debate on the fragmentation-diversity relationship. Therefore, this study offers a parsimonious mechanistic explanation for empirically observed biodiversity patterns in response to habitat destruction.
The competitive dynamics of metapopulations subject to the Allee-like effect.

Abstract:It is well recognized that individuals of many species can benefit from the presence of conspecifics, a concept broadly referred to as the Allee effect. At the metapopulation level, there is an analogous but essentially different phenomenon called the Allee-like effect that leads to metapopulation extinction thresholds at low habitat occupancy. But so far not adequate attention has been paid to this phenomenon. In this paper, the Allee-like effect is introduced into a metapopulation model of one species and also that of a three-state two-species competitive system. Phase plane analysis is used to investigate the dynamics of these models. We demonstrate that the Allee-like effect alone could lead to multiple stable states in three-state two-species competitive systems at the metapopulation level, and the number of stable states decrease as the Allee-like effect becomes more severe. Severe Allee-like effects may make coexistence impossible and may even lead to the extinction of both species even if their initial habitat occupancies are high and suitable habitats are enough. It is especially noticeable that depending on their initial conditions one species may exclude the other one that subjects to a weaker Allee-like effect than the former, while the second species always excludes the first one when both species are assumed to be in the absence of the Allee-like effect. We also investigate the habitat destructive effect on the Allee-like system mentioned above. Research indicates that the existence of the Allee-like effect makes a metapopulation more susceptible to habitat destruction. All in all, the Allee-like effect is probably a destabilizing factor that, together with habitat destruction, would affect the continuous existence of species. These conclusions may have important implications for conservation and metacommunity organization.

Abstract:Understanding the mechanisms of biodiversity maintenance is a fundamental issue in ecology. The possibility that species disperse within the landscape along differing paths presents a relatively unexplored mechanism by which diversity could emerge. By embedding a classical metapopulation model within a network framework, we explore how access to different dispersal networks can promote species coexistence. While it is clear that species with the same demography cannot coexist stably on shared dispersal networks, we find that coexistence is possible on unshared networks, as species can surprisingly form self-organised clusters of occupied patches with the most connected patches at the core. Furthermore, a unimodal biodiversity response to an increase in species colonisation rates or average patch connectivity emerges in unshared networks. Increasing network size also increases species richness monotonically, producing characteristic species-area curves. This suggests that, in contrast to previous predictions, many more species can co-occur than the number of limiting resources.
Habitat isolation diminishes potential of self-organised pattern formation to promote local diversity in metacommunities

Abstract:Progressive destruction and isolation of natural habitat is a major threat to biodiversity worldwide. In this study we use a trophic metacommunity model with complex, spatially explicit structure to address how the interaction of local and regional processes affects the functional diversity of autotroph (producer) communities within and between individual habitat patches. One important driver of biodiversity in metacommunities is spatial heterogeneity of the environment, as it enables source-sink dynamics between patches. Besides a-priori differences in the environmental conditions, heterogeneous distributions of resources and species biomasses can also emerge through self-organised pattern formation caused by scale-dependent feedback between local trophic and regional dispersal dynamics. We show that this emergent heterogeneity can enhance the functional diversity of local autotroph communities by jointly strengthening source-sink dynamics and reducing stabilising selection pressure. Our results indicate that this effect is particularly strong in highly connected metacommunities, while metacommunity size (number of patches) alone plays a lesser role. We demonstrate that the positive effect on local diversity is driven by an eco-evo-spatial feedback loop that is fueled by the asynchronous biomass- and trait dynamics between the patches created by self-organised pattern formation. In highly connected metacommunities, oscillatory biomass patterns with particularly large amplitude strengthen this feedback loop. Our findings are highly relevant in the light of anthropogenic habitat changes that often destroy dispersal pathways, thereby increasing habitat isolation, lowering overall connectance of metacommunities and ultimately threatening the biodiversity in local habitats. Only a joint investigation of the contributing ecological, evolutionary, and spatial mechanisms in complex model systems can yield comprehensive understanding of these processes, allowing for the development of strategies to mitigate adverse anthropogenic influence.

Abstract:Dynamic interspecific interactions are thought to contribute to fundamental structures of ecological communities. Using the Yodzis framework of dominance control versus founder control versus niche control, the importance of intransitive loops in sub-communities in a source/sink or metacommunity competition context is examined. It is found that a three-species sub-community sampled from a species pool composed of nothing but dominance controlled species pairs can result in a stable three species coexistence. It is shown that if effect and response competition are balanced, the overall sub-community will be persistent, anchored by one or more intransitive loops. It is proposed that such an arrangement be referred to as an intransitive structure. It is concluded that persistence of a sub-community (when species pairs in the species pool are all dominance controlled) of more than three species is possible only if it has an intransitive structure.

Abstract:Abstract Plant succession is regulated by a combination of abiotic and biotic factors. However, previous studies of biotic drivers have focused overwhelmingly on direct pairwise species interactions, ignoring the likely prevalent higher-order interactions (HOIs) in natural systems. Climate also plays a significant role in determining successional dynamics with both direct effects and indirect effects via altered biotic interactions. Here we explored the relative effects of direct species interactions, HOIs, climate, and their interactions on population dynamics of herbaceous plants during 50 years of post-agricultural secondary succession and tested whether the inclusion of HOIs and climate data improved forecasts of population dynamics. Direct intraspecific interactions were competitive and prevalent across the 90 herbaceous plants examined, while direct interspecific interactions only affected populations of 29% species. HOIs, mainly arose from intraspecific HOIs of conspecifics, were mostly positive and thus largely mitigated the competitive effects of direct intraspecific interactions. Species with lower peak cover experienced stronger intraspecific competition and positive intraspecific HOIs of conspecifics. Direct interspecific interactions had neutral or facilitative effects on species with lower peak cover, and tended to have competitive effects on species with higher peak cover. Climate simultaneously influenced population dynamics both directly and indirectly via altered species interactions. Forecast performance was significantly improved with the inclusion of HOIs or climate for about half and one-third of species, respectively. Our study emphasizes the importance of HOIs, which largely mitigated direct competitive effects on population dynamics of herbaceous plants during succession. Teasing apart HOIs from direct species interactions substantially refined our understanding of successional dynamics of herbaceous plants and improved the accuracy of forecasting population dynamics during succession in a changing world.

The three-species problem: Incorporating competitive asymmetry and intransitivity in modern coexistence theory

Abstract:While natural communities can contain hundreds of species, modern coexistence theory focuses primarily on species pairs. Alternatively, the structural stability approach considers the feasibility of equilibria, gaining scalability to larger communities but sacrificing information about dynamic stability. Three-species competitive communities are a bridge to more-diverse communities. They display novel phenomena while remaining amenable to mathematical analysis, but remain incompletely understood. Here, we combine these approaches to identify the key quantities that determine three-species competition outcomes. We show that pairwise niche overlap and fitness differences are insufficient to completely characterize competitive outcomes, which requires a strictly triplet-wise quantity: cyclic asymmetry, which underlies intransitivity. Low pairwise niche overlap stabilizes the triplet, while high fitness differences promote competitive exclusion. The effect of cyclic asymmetry on stability is complex and depends on pairwise niche overlap. In summary, we elucidate how pairwise niche overlap, fitness differences and cyclic asymmetry determine three-species competition outcomes.
The unimodal intransitivity-fertility relationship is not mediated by demographic trade-offs in a subtropical forest

Abstract:Intransitive competition has long been acknowledged as a potential mechanism favoring species coexistence. However, its prevalence, variance along environmental gradients, and possible underlying mechanisms (trade-offs) in plant communities (especially in forests) has seldom been examined. A recently developed "reverse-engineering" approach based on Markov Chain allowed us to estimate the competitive transition matrices and competitive intransitivity from observational abundance data. Using this approach, we estimated competitive intransitivity of five dominant species in a subtropical forest and then related it to soil fertility (soil organic matter and soil pH) and demographic trade-offs (growth-survival and stature-recruitment trade-offs). In our forest plot, intransitive competition was common among the dominant species and peaked at the intermediate level of soil organic matter. Neither the growth-survival trade-off nor the stature-recruitment trade-off was positively related to competitive intransitivity. Our study for the first time empirically supported the unimodal intransitivity-fertility relationship in forests, which, however, was not mediated by the two demographic trade-offs in our plot.
How Combined Pairwise and Higher-Order Interactions Shape Transient Dynamics

Abstract:Understanding how species interactions shape biodiversity is a core challenge in ecology. While much focus has been on long-term stability, there is rising interest in transient dynamics-the short-lived periods when ecosystems respond to disturbances and adjust toward stability. These transitions are crucial for predicting ecosystem reactions and guiding effective conservation. Our study introduces a model that uses convex combinations to blend pairwise and higher-order interactions, offering a more realistic view of natural ecosystems. We find pairwise interactions slow the journey to stability, while higher-order interactions speed it up. Employing global stability analysis and numerical simulations, we establish that as the proportion of higher-order interactions (HOIs) increases, mean transient times exhibit a significant reduction, thereby underscoring the essential role of HOIs in enhancing biodiversity stabilization. Our results reveal a robust correlation between the most negative real part of the eigenvalues of the Jacobian matrix associated with the linearized system at the coexistence equilibrium and the mean transient times. This indicates that a more negative leading eigenvalue correlates with accelerated convergence to stable coexistence abundances. This insight is vital for comprehending ecosystem resilience and recovery, emphasizing the key role of HOIs in promoting stabilization. Amid growing interest in transient dynamics and its implications for biodiversity and ecological stability, our study enhances the understanding of how species interactions affect both transient and long-term ecosystem behavior. By addressing a critical gap in ecological theory and offering a practical framework for ecosystem management, our work advances knowledge of transient dynamics, ultimately informing effective conservation strategies.

Abstract:OTTAWA-- When the Canadian government announced earlier this month that it will ax three multicampus research collaborations it has been funding for the past 8 years, it touched off an angry reaction from neuroscientists around the world. They are upset that the highly respected NeuroSciences Network--a $3.3-million-a-year collaboration based at McGill University--was among the victims, in spite of the fact that an international peer-review panel gave it a strong endorsement earlier this year. Members of the panel say they are "insulted" and "appalled" by the decision, and add that they just can't fathom how the committee that recommended NeuroSciences' demise reached the conclusion that its scientific program was somehow "compromised" and "uneven."
