Abstract:In order to evaluate the adverse effects of combined traffic noise, a face-to-face survey was carried out among 1433 local residents aging from 15 to 75 years. The relationships between the percentage of highly annoyed (%HA), sleep disturbance and acoustical/non-acoustical factors (Ldn, age, gender, residence time, time at home, etc.) were analyzed, respectively. Results showed that %HA caused by road–rail combined traffic noise (%HAroad–rail) was between %HA caused by road dominant noise (%HAroad) and %HA caused by viaduct rail transit dominant noise (%HArail) at same Ldn, which could be explained by partial masking effect. When Ldn > 63 dB, %HArail was higher than %HAroad, which may be related to that the visibility of noise source (trains) and the vibration generated during pass-by of trains could indirectly cause an increment of noise annoyance. When Ldn < 63 dB, %HArail was lower than %HAroad. This may be explained by that the noise disturbance caused by maximal A-weighted sound pressure level of railway noise events in the area dominated by road traffic noise had more influence on annoyance than that in the area dominated by viaduct rail transit noise. Meanwhile, %HA showed a rising trend with the increase in the proportion of nighttime in total time at home, which may be related to that people had a less tolerance to noise at night. The sleep disturbance reached the maximum in the age-group of 30–40 years, which was correlated with that middle-aged people had higher stress and higher noise sensitivity.
A survey on exposure-response relationships for road, rail, and aircraft noise annoyance: Differences between continuous and intermittent noise

Abstract:The aim of the present study is to establish exposure-response relationships reflecting the percentage highly annoyed (%HA) as functions of road traffic, railway, and aircraft noise exposure, measured as day-evening-night level (Lden), as well as to elucidate the degree to which the acoustic indicator Intermittency Ratio (IR), which reflects the "eventfulness" of a noise situation, predicts noise annoyance. We conducted a mixed-mode representative population survey in a stratified random sample of 5592 residents exposed to transportation noise all over Switzerland. Source-specific noise exposure was calculated for each floor and each façade based on comprehensive traffic data. Noise annoyance was measured using the ICBEN 11-point scale. The survey was carried out in 4 waves at different times of the year. We hypothesized that in addition to Lden, the effects of noise on annoyance can be better explained when also considering the intensity of short-term variations of noise level over time. We therefore incorporated the acoustic indicator IR in the statistical models. For all noise sources, results revealed significant associations between Lden and %HA after controlling for confounders and independent predictors such as IR (measured over 24 h), exposure to other transportation noise sources, sex and age, language, home ownership, education level, living duration, temperature, and access to a quiet side of the dwelling. Aircraft noise annoyance scored markedly higher than annoyance to railway and road traffic noise at the same Lden level. Railway noise elicited higher percentages of highly annoyed persons than road traffic noise. Results furthermore suggest that for road traffic noise, IR has an additional effect on %HA and can explain shifts of the exposure-response curve of up to about 6 dB between low IR and high IR exposure situations, possibly due to the effect of different durations of noise-free intervals between events. For railway and aircraft noise annoyance, the predictive value of IR was limited.

Abstract:The definition of noise annoyance used in this paper, is that, in a certain acoustic environment, the negative subjective response including distraction, disturbance, displeasure and anxiety can be described as noise annoyance. We choose two types of typical areas where the characteristic of the acoustic environment are similar to study the influence of the visibility of the source of noise (whether the source of noise can be seen or not) on noise annoyance. In our research, the degree of noise annoyance is divided into five grades according to previous international research: “not at all,” “slightly,” “moderately,” “very” and “extremely”, they are typical fuzzy description. The appraisal of subjective annoying response is a fuzzy event. So the fuzzy mathematic method is applied to calculate the probability of noise annoyance to evaluate the influence of the visibility of the source on an individual's degree of subjective noise annoyance. The conclusion shows that under the same acoustic environment, when the source of noise can be seen the corresponding noise annoyance is higher, this finding will furnish us with a new approach in the research of the noise control.

Abstract:In order to study the effects of time-resolved noise parameters on subjective annoyance, participants were subjected to intermittent pure tones in the range from 125 Hz to 4000 Hz. Paired comparison experiments were performed at loudness levels of 70 phon and 75 phon. At the same frequency and loudness level there is a strong correspondence between the annoyance and the burst duration or interval time of intermittent noise. Noises with the same burst duration but a short interval time can lead to a high degree of annoyance; Noises with a long burst duration can reveal a high annoyance degree for the same interval time: and the annoyance degree of continuous pure tone is higher than intermittent pure tone. The subjective annoyances of intermittent noises with a continuous spectrum are very similar to those caused by intermittent pure tones. Moreover, for a given burst duration and interval time, higher frequency noises are more annoying for frequencies between 250 Hz and 4000 Hz. For the intermittent noise, however, 125 Hz is more annoying than 250 Hz.
Influencing Factors Identification and Prediction of Noise Annoyance—A Case Study on Substation Noise

Abstract:Noise-induced annoyance is one person’s individual adverse reaction to noise. Noise annoyance is an important basis for determining the acceptability of environmental noise exposure and for formulating environmental noise standards. It is influenced by both acoustic and non-acoustic factors. To identify non-acoustic factors significantly influencing noise annoyance, 40 noise samples with a loudness level of 60–90 phon from 500–1000 kV substations were selected in this study. A total of 246 subjects were recruited randomly. Using the assessment scale of noise annoyance specified by ISO 15666-2021, listening tests were conducted. Meanwhile, basic information and noise sensitivity of each subject were obtained through a questionnaire and the Weinstein’s noise sensitivity scale. Based on the five non-acoustic indices which were identified in this study and had a significant influence on noise annoyance, a prediction model of annoyance from substation noise was proposed by a stepwise regression. Results showed that the influence weight of acoustic indices in the model accounted for 80% in which the equivalent continuous A-weighted sound pressure level and the sound pressure level above 1/1 octave band of 125 Hz were 65% and 15%, respectively. The influence weight of non-acoustic indices entering the model was 20% in which age, education level, noise sensitivity, income, and noisy degree in the workplace were 8%, 2%, 4%, 4%, and 2%, respectively. The result of this study can provide a basis for factors identification and prediction of noise annoyance.

Abstract:To examine extraaural effects as induced by 20 min of road (ROAD) and 20 min of rail (RAIL) traffic noise with same loudness (75 dBA), a laboratory study was carried out. The study (N = 54) consisted of 28 high and 26 low-annoyed healthy individuals as determined by a traffic annoyance test. To control attention, all individuals performed a nonauditory short-term memory test during the noise exposures. A within-subject design, with phases of ROAD, RAIL, and CALM (memory test only), alternated by phases of rest, was defined. Heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (sBP), total peripheral resistance (TPR), as well as three autonomic variables, preejection period (PEP), 0.15-0.4 Hz high-frequency component of HR variability (HF), and salivary stress biomarker alpha amylase (sAA) were measured. In relation to CALM, HR increased (RAIL +2.1%, ROAD +2.5%), sBP tended to increase against the end of noise exposure, PEP decreased (RAIL -0.7%, ROAD -0.8%), HF decreased (RAIL -3.4%, ROAD -2.9%), and sAA increased (RAIL +78%, ROAD +69%). No differences were found between RAIL and ROAD, indicating that both noise stressors induced comparable extraaural effects. Factor annoyance showed significant during CALM. Here a reduced sympathetic drive (higher PEP values) combined with an increased vascular tone (higher TPR values) was found at the high-annoyed subgroup.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:High-speed railway (HR, Electrified railway with service speed above 200 km/h.) noise and conventional railway (CR, Electrified railway with service speed under 200 km/h.) noise are different in both time and frequency domain. There is an urgent need to study the influence of HR noise and consequently, develop appropriate noise evaluation index and limits for the total railway noise including HR and CR noise.METHODS:Based on binaural recording of HR and CR noises in a approximate semi-free field, noise annoyance and activity disturbance induced by maximal train pass-by events in China were investigated through laboratory subjective evaluation. 80 students within recruited 102 students, 40 males and 40 females, 23.9 ± 2.1 years old, were finally selected as the subjects. After receiving noise stimulus via headphone of a binaural audio playback system, subjects were asked to express the annoyance or activity disturbance due to railway noise at a 0-100 numerical scale.RESULTS:The results show that with the same annoyance rating (A) or activity disturbance rating (D), the A-weighted equivalent sound pressure level (LAeq) of CR noise is approximately 7 dB higher than that of HR noise. Linear regression analysis between some acoustical parameters and A (or D) suggests that the coefficient of determination (R2) is higher with the instantaneous fast A-weighted sound pressure level (LAFmax) than that with LAeq. A combined acoustical parameter, LHC = 1.74LAFmax + 0.008LAFmax(Lp-LAeq), where Lp is the sound pressure level, was derived consequently, which could better evaluate the total railway noise, including HR and CR noise. More importantly, with a given LHC, the noise annoyance of HR and CR noise is the same.CONCLUSIONS:Among various acoustical parameters including LHC and LAeq, A and D have the highest correlation with LHC. LHC has been proved to be an appropriate index to evaluate the total railway noise, including both HR and CR. However, it should be pointed out that this study provides suggestive evidence, rather than a final proof. Further study is expected to elucidate conclusions above by additional measurements.
Subjective Annoyance Caused by Indoor Low-Level and Low Frequency Noise and Control Method

Abstract:The influence of low-level noise has not been widely noticed. This paper discovered that low-level and low frequency noise(A-weighted equivalent level L-eq < 45 dB) causes higher probability of subjective annoyance. The fuzzy mathematic principle was applied to deal with the threshold level of subjective annoyance from noise in this study; there is preferable relationship between the indoor noise and noise annoyance at low frequency noise level. Study indicated at the same centered noise level, the change of annoyance probability is mainly caused by the change of the frequency spectrum characteristic of the indoor noise. Under low noise level environment, without change of the medium-low frequency noise, the slight increase of medium-high frequency noise level with the help of noise sheltering effect can significantly reduce the noise annoyance. This discovery brings a new resolution on how to improve the environmental quality of working or living places. A noise control model is given in this study according to the acoustic analysis.

Abstract:Effects of direct sound and one time reflection of railway noise on residential quarter were mainly considered, and model for prediction of attenuation of railway noise in residential quarter was given in the paper. With the given model, the effects of railway noise on residential quarter were analyzed and compared with measure results, it was shown that the model is suitable for prediction to attenuation of railway noise in residential quarter.

Abstract:Background: Annoyance is regarded as the most common adverse reaction to environmental noise, and yet, relatively little is known of noise annoyance in children, even though children find themselves in a vulnerable developmental period. Noise perception is usually studied as a unidimensional phenomenon with an emphasis on annoyance, disregarding positive appraisals of the acoustic environment. This study aims to explore the joint relationships between traffic noise, other built and natural environment indicators and children's perception of noise and associated environmental restorative quality. Methods: Data are gathered from a cross-section survey among 1251 children (8 - 12 years old) in the cross-border Tyrol area (Austria/Italy). Children and their mothers completed questionnaires on sociodemographics, living conditions, perceived neighborhood quality, and noise annoyance in different situations. Children's residential locations were assigned traffic noise, air pollution, and built environment/natural landscape indicators, including imperviousness density, greenness, and the composite indicator distance to nature (D2N; Rüdisser et al., 2012), which are aimed to allow an integrated prediction of noise perception and restorative quality in these children. Results: This paper will present findings on the association between contextual influences and noise perception in children, with a focus on both positive and negative appraisals of the environment.

Abstract:Advanced technologies and regulatory regimes have contributed to the availability of veterinary vaccines that have high quality and favourable safety profiles in terms of potential risks posed to the target animals, the persons who come into contact with the vaccine, the consumers of food derived from vaccinated animals and the environment. The authorisation process requires that a range of safety studies are provided to evaluate the products. The design and production of vaccines, and their safe use, are primarily assessed by using data gathered from extensive pre-marketing studies performed on target animals and specific quality tests. The current post-marketing safeguards include good manufacturing practices, batch safety testing, inspections and pharmacovigilance. In addition to hazard identification, a full benefit/risk evaluation needs to be undertaken. The outcome of that evaluation will determine options for risk management and affect regulatory decisions on the safety of the vaccine; options might, for example, include special warnings on package inserts and labels.
A novel automatic liver segmentation technique for MR images

Abstract:This paper presents an automatic liver segmentation algorithm based on fast marching and improved fuzzy cluster methods, which can segment liver from abdominal MR images accurately. The developed method is composed of three major steps: first, fast marching method and convex hull algorithm are applied to roughly extract the liver's boundary and topology, which provides a basic estimation for the subsequent calculations; second, an improved fuzzy cluster method, combining with a multiple cycles processing, is designed to refine the segmentation result; third, based on the segmented results, the liver is visualized by Marching Cube method. There are two major difficulties in MRIs liver segmentation: one is that the boundaries between liver and adjacent tissues generally have uniform intensity distributions, which often leads to over segmentation of the liver; the other is that inner vascular inside the liver commonly leads to segmentation leakage. In order to solve these two problems, a prior knowledge based fuzzy cluster method is proposed. Experiments show that the developed method is effective and robust for liver segmentation of MR images.
Personal noise ranking of road traffic: subjective estimation versus physiological parameters under laboratory conditions

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the subjective estimation of noise-induced discomfort and its correlation to psychoacoustic and physiological parameters under laboratory conditions. To establish an effective description of sound qualities of road traffic noise, supplementing the current standards and calculation specifications. Methods: Pass-by vehicle noise samples were binaurally recorded with a dummy head measurement system, and synthetically composed to six vehicle ensembles considering different road beds, varying speed profiles and noise barriers. Fifty-one persons were selected and tested under laboratory conditions. Study participants were exposed to defined acoustic stimuli, alternating with neutral phases lacking acoustic content in a listening room. Concomitant recording of electrocardiogram (ECG) and respiratory rate was performed. Subjective estimation of noise-induced discomfort of assigned vehicle ensembles was rated on a personal ranking scale (PRS) by the study subjects. Subjective ratings were combined with objective psychoacoustic parameters by multiple regression analysis. Results: Heart rate was increased during all noise exposure phases compared to neutral phases; the increase of heart rate differed among vehicle ensembles and was statistically significant in two cases (p<0.01). Respiratory rate remained unaffected. Personal rankings also differed among vehicle ensembles and correlated well with objective psychoacoustic parameters (p<0.0001); e.g., loudness combined with roughness describes the correlation with subjective estimation of noise-induced discomfort better than the A-weighted sound level. Vehicle ensembles rated more unpleasant caused higher increases in heart rate as well (p<0.0001). Conclusions: The sound quality of road traffic noise as it is described by various psychoacoustic parameters not only determines the subjective estimation of noise-induced discomfort but in addition affects physiological parameters like heart rate. This should be considered for future perspectives in road- and traffic planning and therefore may serve construction engineers as well as traffic planner as a supplemental tool.
The Relationship Between Urban Road Traffic Noise and Annoyance

Abstract:With the development of urban road construction,traffic noise has become an important part of urban environmental pollution.In order to understand the relationship between traffic noise and annoyance,this paper conducted a questionnaire survey among 1600 residents,simulated statistics of traffic noise exposure combined with Cadna/A software,and corrected the noise monitoring data of reference points,so as to establish the response curve of urban traffic noise of Chinese residents in 2022.At the same time,the fuzzy mathematics method is used to calculate the disturbance threshold of residential noise.The results show that,among the five stages,the highest stage 1 evaluation model has a better fit with residents'sense of annoyance in the current environment noise exposure scene.Meanwhile,the annoyance threshold of road traffic noise is 60.96 dB,slightly higher than the current standard.

Abstract:Several residential areas in Dalian, north of China, were selected to investigate the influence of combined traffic noise pollution on urban residents. The software Cadna/A was used to estimate the day-night equivalent noise level (Ldn) at 1m from the windows of each building, which were modified according to the actual data. Annoyance has been identified as the most important psychological impact of noise. A face-to-face survey on annoyance was carried out among 1536 local residents between the ages of 15 and 75 years. In this study, the relationship between the percentage of “highly annoyed” persons (%HA) and Ldn was determined. The Ldn was measured and identified as railway dominant noise, road traffic dominant noise or road–rail combined traffic noise. We find that when Ldn>63.5 dB, the %HA due to the road–rail combined traffic noise was significantly higher than that due to the one dominant noise source with the same Ldn. Thus, it is suggested that the planning permission buildings whose Ldn of road–rail combined traffic noise exceeds 63.5–dB be reviewed more strictly. The relationships between %HA induced by different traffic noise and the distance to transportation artery (s) were analyzed. The results showed that as the distance to transportation artery increased, the %HA due to different traffic noise gradually decreased. Furthermore, the %HA due to the road traffic dominant noise at close range (1m≤s≤50m) was lower than that at a more remote location (51m≤s≤100m), which might be ascribed to the greater tolerance of the noise by the residents.
