Abstract:A pair-wise comparison experiment on subjective annoyance rating of nine different noise samples is the focus of this paper. These noise samples collected from some associated facilities in urban residential areas are classified into three different types according to their frequency characteristics, and their A-weighted levels are equalized at 65dBA. Based on the assessment of judging errors and statistical validity analysis of each testee’s evaluating matrix, invalid data are eliminated. The results show that the percentage of testees who chose noise samples containing more low frequency components had an obvious downside trend with the descending degree of annoyance from ‘the most annoyed’ to ‘the least annoyed’. The result indicates that noise which has low frequency characteristic is more annoying than noise of other frequencies when their A-weighted level are the same. Therefore, A-weighted level cannot scientifically assess noise annoyance which contains low frequency components mostly.
Investigation into the subjective annoyance of intermittent noise

Abstract:In order to study the effects of time-resolved noise parameters on subjective annoyance, participants were subjected to intermittent pure tones in the range from 125 Hz to 4000 Hz. Paired comparison experiments were performed at loudness levels of 70 phon and 75 phon. At the same frequency and loudness level there is a strong correspondence between the annoyance and the burst duration or interval time of intermittent noise. Noises with the same burst duration but a short interval time can lead to a high degree of annoyance; Noises with a long burst duration can reveal a high annoyance degree for the same interval time: and the annoyance degree of continuous pure tone is higher than intermittent pure tone. The subjective annoyances of intermittent noises with a continuous spectrum are very similar to those caused by intermittent pure tones. Moreover, for a given burst duration and interval time, higher frequency noises are more annoying for frequencies between 250 Hz and 4000 Hz. For the intermittent noise, however, 125 Hz is more annoying than 250 Hz.
Study on Annoyance and Sleep Disturbance Induced by Combined Noises from Road Traffic and Viaduct Rail Transit

Abstract:In order to evaluate the adverse effects of combined traffic noise, a face-to-face survey was carried out among 1433 local residents aging from 15 to 75 years. The relationships between the percentage of highly annoyed (%HA), sleep disturbance and acoustical/non-acoustical factors (Ldn, age, gender, residence time, time at home, etc.) were analyzed, respectively. Results showed that %HA caused by road–rail combined traffic noise (%HAroad–rail) was between %HA caused by road dominant noise (%HAroad) and %HA caused by viaduct rail transit dominant noise (%HArail) at same Ldn, which could be explained by partial masking effect. When Ldn > 63 dB, %HArail was higher than %HAroad, which may be related to that the visibility of noise source (trains) and the vibration generated during pass-by of trains could indirectly cause an increment of noise annoyance. When Ldn < 63 dB, %HArail was lower than %HAroad. This may be explained by that the noise disturbance caused by maximal A-weighted sound pressure level of railway noise events in the area dominated by road traffic noise had more influence on annoyance than that in the area dominated by viaduct rail transit noise. Meanwhile, %HA showed a rising trend with the increase in the proportion of nighttime in total time at home, which may be related to that people had a less tolerance to noise at night. The sleep disturbance reached the maximum in the age-group of 30–40 years, which was correlated with that middle-aged people had higher stress and higher noise sensitivity.

Abstract:A number of typical noise sources from urban environments were recorded. Based on spectral analysis, several characteristic frequencies which involved high subjective annoyance were selected according to the relative subjective annoyance of pure tones with different frequencies at equal loudness levels. Pure tones with characteristic frequencies were synthesized into a series of noise samples. A paired comparison test was used for comparison of the subjective annoyance due: to actual noise and synthesized noise. The results suggest that the sound energy distribution of actual noise at different frequency bands should be considered in order to simulate the subjective annoyance induced by actual noise with composite noise more accurately. Composite noise should be combined with pure tones which induced high subjective annoyance and are located in frequency bands with the majority of sound energy, provided that the relative Sound Pressure Level (SPL) differences among the characteristic frequencies of actual noise were retained.

Abstract:The definition of noise annoyance used in this paper, is that, in a certain acoustic environment, the negative subjective response including distraction, disturbance, displeasure and anxiety can be described as noise annoyance. We choose two types of typical areas where the characteristic of the acoustic environment are similar to study the influence of the visibility of the source of noise (whether the source of noise can be seen or not) on noise annoyance. In our research, the degree of noise annoyance is divided into five grades according to previous international research: “not at all,” “slightly,” “moderately,” “very” and “extremely”, they are typical fuzzy description. The appraisal of subjective annoying response is a fuzzy event. So the fuzzy mathematic method is applied to calculate the probability of noise annoyance to evaluate the influence of the visibility of the source on an individual's degree of subjective noise annoyance. The conclusion shows that under the same acoustic environment, when the source of noise can be seen the corresponding noise annoyance is higher, this finding will furnish us with a new approach in the research of the noise control.
Subjective Annoyance Caused by Indoor Low-Level and Low Frequency Noise and Control Method

Abstract:The influence of low-level noise has not been widely noticed. This paper discovered that low-level and low frequency noise(A-weighted equivalent level L-eq < 45 dB) causes higher probability of subjective annoyance. The fuzzy mathematic principle was applied to deal with the threshold level of subjective annoyance from noise in this study; there is preferable relationship between the indoor noise and noise annoyance at low frequency noise level. Study indicated at the same centered noise level, the change of annoyance probability is mainly caused by the change of the frequency spectrum characteristic of the indoor noise. Under low noise level environment, without change of the medium-low frequency noise, the slight increase of medium-high frequency noise level with the help of noise sheltering effect can significantly reduce the noise annoyance. This discovery brings a new resolution on how to improve the environmental quality of working or living places. A noise control model is given in this study according to the acoustic analysis.

Abstract:Present room emission limits of fixed equipment noise transmitted by structures are considered incapable to predict subjective perception rationally.In this study,white noise of 31.5～500 Hz octave bands through filtration is adjusted to the sound pressure levels(SPL)of standard limits to form the original sound samples.New sound samples are produced by moderately adjusting the SPL of these 5 octave bands.Subjective annoyance tests are carried out using paired comparison method.The results indicate that,under the condition of equal A-weighted SPL or equal loudness levels,the new sound samples,whose SPL of 31.5 Hz and 63 Hz octave bands are reduced and SPL of 125 Hz and 250 Hz and 500 Hz octave bands are increased,are less annoying than the original sound samples.There is a significant correlation between SPL of 31.5 Hz octave band and the subjective annoyance rating(p<0.01),and Pearson's correlation coefficient is 0.925～0.951.

Abstract:In order to get more reasonable Emission Limits of Structure-Borne Noise from Fixture Transmitted into Room (ELSBNFTR), a subjective response experiment was carried out. In this experiment, the original samples (OS) were generated based on the current ELSBNFTR, while the adjusted samples (AS) were based on the proposed ELSBNFTR. Subjects were asked to make comparison between OS and AS on the basis of relative annoyance. The effect of Quality Assessment Index (QAI) on dealing with room noise complaints was discussed. As shown in the results, for each compared group, more than 72.0% of subjects chose "OS were more annoying than AS". The spectra of OS were more imbalanced, due to the higher proportion of low frequency noise energy, which led to a more rumbly character. It is proposed that QAI should be introduced into ELSBNFTR, in order to reduce complaints mainly caused by room noise (including structure-borne noise from fixture and background noise) with an imbalanced spectrum, while the structure-borne noise is still within ELSBNFTR. Besides, it is suggested that the evaluation of the difference values between room noise and background noise at different octave bands should be added in the procedure for the assessment of complaints, and 5 dB could be considered as a limit.
A survey on exposure-response relationships for road, rail, and aircraft noise annoyance: Differences between continuous and intermittent noise

Abstract:The aim of the present study is to establish exposure-response relationships reflecting the percentage highly annoyed (%HA) as functions of road traffic, railway, and aircraft noise exposure, measured as day-evening-night level (Lden), as well as to elucidate the degree to which the acoustic indicator Intermittency Ratio (IR), which reflects the "eventfulness" of a noise situation, predicts noise annoyance. We conducted a mixed-mode representative population survey in a stratified random sample of 5592 residents exposed to transportation noise all over Switzerland. Source-specific noise exposure was calculated for each floor and each façade based on comprehensive traffic data. Noise annoyance was measured using the ICBEN 11-point scale. The survey was carried out in 4 waves at different times of the year. We hypothesized that in addition to Lden, the effects of noise on annoyance can be better explained when also considering the intensity of short-term variations of noise level over time. We therefore incorporated the acoustic indicator IR in the statistical models. For all noise sources, results revealed significant associations between Lden and %HA after controlling for confounders and independent predictors such as IR (measured over 24 h), exposure to other transportation noise sources, sex and age, language, home ownership, education level, living duration, temperature, and access to a quiet side of the dwelling. Aircraft noise annoyance scored markedly higher than annoyance to railway and road traffic noise at the same Lden level. Railway noise elicited higher percentages of highly annoyed persons than road traffic noise. Results furthermore suggest that for road traffic noise, IR has an additional effect on %HA and can explain shifts of the exposure-response curve of up to about 6 dB between low IR and high IR exposure situations, possibly due to the effect of different durations of noise-free intervals between events. For railway and aircraft noise annoyance, the predictive value of IR was limited.
Annoyance and Activity Disturbance Induced by High-Speed Railway and Conventional Railway Noise: a Contrastive Case Study

Abstract:BACKGROUND:High-speed railway (HR, Electrified railway with service speed above 200 km/h.) noise and conventional railway (CR, Electrified railway with service speed under 200 km/h.) noise are different in both time and frequency domain. There is an urgent need to study the influence of HR noise and consequently, develop appropriate noise evaluation index and limits for the total railway noise including HR and CR noise.METHODS:Based on binaural recording of HR and CR noises in a approximate semi-free field, noise annoyance and activity disturbance induced by maximal train pass-by events in China were investigated through laboratory subjective evaluation. 80 students within recruited 102 students, 40 males and 40 females, 23.9 ± 2.1 years old, were finally selected as the subjects. After receiving noise stimulus via headphone of a binaural audio playback system, subjects were asked to express the annoyance or activity disturbance due to railway noise at a 0-100 numerical scale.RESULTS:The results show that with the same annoyance rating (A) or activity disturbance rating (D), the A-weighted equivalent sound pressure level (LAeq) of CR noise is approximately 7 dB higher than that of HR noise. Linear regression analysis between some acoustical parameters and A (or D) suggests that the coefficient of determination (R2) is higher with the instantaneous fast A-weighted sound pressure level (LAFmax) than that with LAeq. A combined acoustical parameter, LHC = 1.74LAFmax + 0.008LAFmax(Lp-LAeq), where Lp is the sound pressure level, was derived consequently, which could better evaluate the total railway noise, including HR and CR noise. More importantly, with a given LHC, the noise annoyance of HR and CR noise is the same.CONCLUSIONS:Among various acoustical parameters including LHC and LAeq, A and D have the highest correlation with LHC. LHC has been proved to be an appropriate index to evaluate the total railway noise, including both HR and CR. However, it should be pointed out that this study provides suggestive evidence, rather than a final proof. Further study is expected to elucidate conclusions above by additional measurements.
Influencing Factors Identification and Prediction of Noise Annoyance—A Case Study on Substation Noise

Abstract:Noise-induced annoyance is one person’s individual adverse reaction to noise. Noise annoyance is an important basis for determining the acceptability of environmental noise exposure and for formulating environmental noise standards. It is influenced by both acoustic and non-acoustic factors. To identify non-acoustic factors significantly influencing noise annoyance, 40 noise samples with a loudness level of 60–90 phon from 500–1000 kV substations were selected in this study. A total of 246 subjects were recruited randomly. Using the assessment scale of noise annoyance specified by ISO 15666-2021, listening tests were conducted. Meanwhile, basic information and noise sensitivity of each subject were obtained through a questionnaire and the Weinstein’s noise sensitivity scale. Based on the five non-acoustic indices which were identified in this study and had a significant influence on noise annoyance, a prediction model of annoyance from substation noise was proposed by a stepwise regression. Results showed that the influence weight of acoustic indices in the model accounted for 80% in which the equivalent continuous A-weighted sound pressure level and the sound pressure level above 1/1 octave band of 125 Hz were 65% and 15%, respectively. The influence weight of non-acoustic indices entering the model was 20% in which age, education level, noise sensitivity, income, and noisy degree in the workplace were 8%, 2%, 4%, 4%, and 2%, respectively. The result of this study can provide a basis for factors identification and prediction of noise annoyance.
The effects of rating scales and individual characteristics on perceived annoyance in laboratory listening tests

Abstract:The issue of annoyance caused by noise has received considerable attention. There is evidence that annoyance assessment plays a crucial role in representing adverse sensory of noise. Although studies have provided some guidance for conducting annoyance assessment experiments, researchers have yet to systematically investigate the effect of rating scales, individual characteristics, and number of subjects on annoyance. This paper seeks to remedy such three problems by statistically analyzing annoyance from three listening tests (LT) in laboratory. Denote the scores of M subjects on K sounds as an M*K matrix, calculate the mean of each row to produce the mean subject score (MSS) of each subject, and similarly, calculate the mean of each matrix column to return the mean noise annoyance (MNA) of each noise sample. The first study found that the MNA and MSS calculated by 0 ∼ 100 linear scale (LT1) and 0 ∼ 10 category scale (LT2) both followed the Gaussian normal distribution, and the correlation between MNAs was 0.99. Statistical test results showed that there was no difference in MNAs and MSSs between the two listening tests, indicating that the rating scaling experiment results are independent of the type of the scale. Then, paired samples t-tests were used to assess whether individual characteristics (experimental environment/site, gender, occupation, age level, experimental experience, use/exposure to the noise source, and knowledge of acoustic) result in differences between MNAs. The test results revealed that the age and the familiarity of the target noise can lead to differences in the perceived annoyance of the subjects. Finally, in order to estimate the effect of the number of subjects on MNA, MNAs from various sample sizes were compared to those from a group of 88 subjects (linear scale) and a group of 104 subjects (category scale), respectively. The findings showed that the correlation coefficient between the MNA of 30 subjects and the MNA of 88 (or 104) individuals was greater than 0.98, and the maximum gap between MNAs is no more than 15 points on the 100-point linear scale (the gap was <1 point on the 9-level category scale). The conclusions presented here may facilitate application in laboratory sound quality assessment experiments.

Road and rail traffic noise induce comparable extra-aural effects as revealed during a short-term memory test

Abstract:To examine extraaural effects as induced by 20 min of road (ROAD) and 20 min of rail (RAIL) traffic noise with same loudness (75 dBA), a laboratory study was carried out. The study (N = 54) consisted of 28 high and 26 low-annoyed healthy individuals as determined by a traffic annoyance test. To control attention, all individuals performed a nonauditory short-term memory test during the noise exposures. A within-subject design, with phases of ROAD, RAIL, and CALM (memory test only), alternated by phases of rest, was defined. Heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (sBP), total peripheral resistance (TPR), as well as three autonomic variables, preejection period (PEP), 0.15-0.4 Hz high-frequency component of HR variability (HF), and salivary stress biomarker alpha amylase (sAA) were measured. In relation to CALM, HR increased (RAIL +2.1%, ROAD +2.5%), sBP tended to increase against the end of noise exposure, PEP decreased (RAIL -0.7%, ROAD -0.8%), HF decreased (RAIL -3.4%, ROAD -2.9%), and sAA increased (RAIL +78%, ROAD +69%). No differences were found between RAIL and ROAD, indicating that both noise stressors induced comparable extraaural effects. Factor annoyance showed significant during CALM. Here a reduced sympathetic drive (higher PEP values) combined with an increased vascular tone (higher TPR values) was found at the high-annoyed subgroup.

Effect of rail traffic noises on the perception of the acoustic environment in office spaces

Abstract:This study conducted a laboratory experiment to investigate the effect of rail traffic noise on the perception of the acoustic environment in office spaces. The study considered two types of experiment stimuli, single noise, and combined noise. The single noise stimuli consisted of silence (SL), air conditioning noise (AC), irrelevant speech (SP), and six types of traffic noise (Tr). Traffic noise included road (R), maglev (Ma), tram (T), conventional train (C), high-speed train (H), and metro (Me). The combined noise stimuli used air conditioning sound and speech as background noise and combined with six types of traffic noise to form the experimental stimuli. Thirty subjects took part in laboratory experiments in which the acoustic environment was rated on two aspects: noise disturbance and acoustic comfort. Under single noises, the results showed that the noise source had a significant negative effect on the evaluation of the acoustic environment. The influence of traffic noises varied with the traffic type, which was lower and higher than that of irrelevant speech and air conditioning noise, respectively. Under combined acoustic conditions, acoustic comfort was affected by the main effects of background noise type, traffic noise type, and traffic noise level. In addition to the main effects, noise disturbance was also influenced by the interaction between traffic noise level and background noise type, and between traffic noise level and traffic noise type. An Experiment Study on the Identification of Noise Sensitive Individuals and the Influence of Noise Sensitivity on Perceived Annoyance

Abstract:The perceived annoyance of noise has a great difference among individuals with different noise sensitivity. This paper proposed a method to identify noise sensitive individuals based on the experimental results of noise perceived annoyance and studied the influence of noise sensitivity on perceived annoyance. 14 pink noise samples with loudness level (L-N) between 30 phon and 95 phon and 59 transformer noise samples with L-N between 60 phon and 90 phon were selected. 337 subjects (undergraduate students) were recruited randomly. The noise sensitivity score (NSS) of each subject was obtained through the Weinstein's noise sensitivity scale. Using the scale of noise annoyance assessment (11-point numerical scale) specified by ISO 15666-2003, perceived annoyance experiments of noise were conducted in a soundproof room. The subjects were divided into several groups according to the NSS of each subject. According to the difference of perceived annoyance between different groups, a certain NSS was chosen as the threshold to identify highly and lowly noise sensitive individuals. Results showed that the threshold was 110, i.e., the NSS of each highly noise sensitive individual was larger than or equal to 110 and the NSS of each lowly noise sensitive individual was smaller than 110. The perceived annoyance of highly sensitive individuals caused by transformer noise was 1.4 larger than that of lowly sensitive individuals on average. Based on 21 acoustic factors and 1 non-acoustic factor (noise sensitivity), the model of perceived annoyance of transformer noise established by stepwise regression indicated that the weight of the influence of noise sensitivity on perceived annoyance was up to 26%. The results of this study can provide a basis for identifying noise sensitive individuals and determining the influence of noise sensitivity on perceived annoyance. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:In order to study how acoustical factors influence annoyance responses to low frequency noise with tonal components, this research has selected 220kV and 500kV transformer noises as examples and an 11-point numerical scale as an evaluation tool, in which the percentage of highly annoyed (%HA) and mean annoyance (MA) are chosen to represent annoyance caused by noises. Results show that a logistic curve is well suited for describing the exposure–response relationship between the A-weighted equivalent sound pressure level (LAeq) and %HA (or MA) of the transformer noise. With the same LAeq, 220kV transformer noise is more annoying than 500kV transformer noise in terms of %HA and MA, which is related to different sharpness, roughness and tonality of the noises caused by transformers of the two voltage levels. Based on stepwise regression analysis, multiple linear regression models are further developed by using LAeq and roughness as acoustical parameters to predict the %HA and MA of transformer noise. Compared with the linear regression model that considered only LAeq values, multiple linear regressions can efficiently account for the different annoyance ratings of the two transformer noises at the same LAeq values.

Abstract:Structure-borne noise originating from a heat pump unit was selected to study the influence on subjective annoyance of low frequency noise (LFN) combined with additional sound. Paired comparison test was used for evaluating the subjective annoyance of LFN combined with different sound pressure levels (SPL) of pink noise, frequency-modulated pure tones (FM pure tones) and natural sounds. The results showed that, with pink noise of 250–1000Hz combined with the original LFN, the subjective annoyance value (SAV) first dropped then rose with increasing SPL. When SPL of the pink noise was 15–25dB, SAV was lower than that of the original LFN. With pink noise of frequency 250–20,000Hz added to LFN, SAV increased linearly with increasing SPL. SAV and the psychoacoustic annoyance value (PAV) obtained by semi-theoretical formulas were well correlated. The determination coefficient (R2) was 0.966 and 0.881, respectively, when the frequency range of the pink noise was 250–1000 and 250–20,000Hz. When FM pure tones with central frequencies of 500, 2000 and 8000Hz, or natural sounds (including the sound of singing birds, flowing water, wind or ticking clock) were, respectively, added to the original sound, the SAV increased as the SPL of the added sound increased. However, when a FM pure tone of 15dB with a central frequency of 2000Hz and a modulation frequency of 10Hz was added, the SAV was lower than that of the original LFN. With SPL and central frequency held invariable, the SAV declined primarily when modulation frequency increased. With SPL and modulation frequency held invariable, the SAV became lowest when the central frequency was 2000Hz. This showed a preferable correlation between SAV and fluctuation extent of FM pure tones.
Influences of combined traffic noise on anxiety in mice.

Abstract:With the rapid development of traffic facilities in China, traffic noise pollution is increasingly prominent. This research aims to explore the influences of combined traffic noise on receptors' anxiety. Institute of cancer research mice were exposed to combined traffic noise (CTN) from highway and high-speed railway for 52 days, whose day-night equivalent continuous A-weighted sound pressure level (L-dn) was 70 dB(A). The impacts of CTN on anxiety were explored by behavior tests and monoamine neurotransmitter assays. The results were in depth discussed in comparison to two previous studies on the impacts of single high-speed railway noise (HSRN) and aircraft noise (AN), but data from the three studies were not merged and statistically compared. No significant differences were shown in the behavioral indicators and the monoamine levels between the experimental and control groups after CTN exposure, indicating no obvious impacts of 70 dB(A) CTN on anxiety in mice were found in this study. When L-dn was approximately 70 dB(A), CTN had less obvious impacts on anxiety than HSRN and AN, which is mainly related to that both the acoustical parameters of noise events [maximum noise level (L-Amax), noise events duration, slope of rise, difference of L-Amax from 1-min background equivalent continuous A-weighted sound pressure level] and modified day-night equivalent continuous R-weighted sound pressure level (considering animal auditory sensitivity to different sound frequencies and circadian rhythms) of CTN are smaller than those of HSRN and AN. Abstract:We have studied the relationships among the polypeptides of Newcastle disease virus by using both kinetic and tryptic peptide analyses. The results of our tryptic peptide analyses suggest that there are at least six unique viral polypeptides--L, HN, FO(F), NP, M, and a 47,000-dalton polypeptide. The small virion glycopolypeptide F is related to FO, a glycopolypeptide found only in infected cells. In addition, several smaller polypeptides, including a 53,000-dalton polypeptide found both in purified virions and in infected cells, are related to the nucleocaspid protein. Kinetic analysis of each viral polypeptide reveals that all of the major viral polypeptides, with the possible exception of L, are stable after an amino acid chase. A precursor-product relationship between FO and F was not demonstrable by pulse-chase experiments. Also, almost the same relative amount of F, the putative product, was present in infected cultures after either 5 or 30 min of radioisotopic labeling. These results suggest that FO is processed rapidly.
