Abstract:In order to evaluate the adverse effects of combined traffic noise, a face-to-face survey was carried out among 1433 local residents aging from 15 to 75 years. The relationships between the percentage of highly annoyed (%HA), sleep disturbance and acoustical/non-acoustical factors (Ldn, age, gender, residence time, time at home, etc.) were analyzed, respectively. Results showed that %HA caused by road–rail combined traffic noise (%HAroad–rail) was between %HA caused by road dominant noise (%HAroad) and %HA caused by viaduct rail transit dominant noise (%HArail) at same Ldn, which could be explained by partial masking effect. When Ldn > 63 dB, %HArail was higher than %HAroad, which may be related to that the visibility of noise source (trains) and the vibration generated during pass-by of trains could indirectly cause an increment of noise annoyance. When Ldn < 63 dB, %HArail was lower than %HAroad. This may be explained by that the noise disturbance caused by maximal A-weighted sound pressure level of railway noise events in the area dominated by road traffic noise had more influence on annoyance than that in the area dominated by viaduct rail transit noise. Meanwhile, %HA showed a rising trend with the increase in the proportion of nighttime in total time at home, which may be related to that people had a less tolerance to noise at night. The sleep disturbance reached the maximum in the age-group of 30–40 years, which was correlated with that middle-aged people had higher stress and higher noise sensitivity.

Abstract:Effects of direct sound and one time reflection of railway noise on residential quarter were mainly considered, and model for prediction of attenuation of railway noise in residential quarter was given in the paper. With the given model, the effects of railway noise on residential quarter were analyzed and compared with measure results, it was shown that the model is suitable for prediction to attenuation of railway noise in residential quarter.

Abstract:In India, railway is the major transportation mode for carrying goods and people. The tracks for the movement of the rail were initially constructed in the city for the pre-eminence and expediency of the vantage of the people. Rapid modernization and increasing population in the city crammed the area around the railway tracks. Moving rail on the tracks passing through the city is not compatible, which is creating problems for the nearby residents. In the urban and suburban regions, the railway noise has become a major problem. This study was conducted to examine the perception of the physiological and psychological effects of railway noise in the nearby areas of railway stations in Delhi, India. For this purpose, 10 sites near the railway station were selected for the study. To assess the impact of railway noise pollution on the health of humans, a questionnaire survey was conducted. The data of 344 individuals were collected through the questionnaire survey and analyzed to get the perception towards railway noise. Noise level was monitored by a Sound Level Meter (SLM) and the equivalent noise level ( L eq ) in dB(A) was used to compute the noise pollution in three shifts, i.e., morning, noon, and evening time. Results showed that 57.65% of female and 86.11% of male respondents in the survey reported the disturbance due to railway noise. The level of noise pollution was found higher in the evening time as compared to the noon and morning period, which exceeds the limit set by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) at all the monitored locations. Findings of the study show that the primary cause of the health problems is railroad noise, which is negatively impacting the health of the residents, who are living in the proximity of the rail track region. The perception survey reported that headache, sleep disturbance, irritation, and stress are common health issues among the locals residing around the railway track proximity in Delhi.

Abstract:The aim of the study was to compare the bone mineral density (BMD) and body composition between ambulatory male MS patients and control subjects and to evaluate the relationships among body composition, motor disability, glucocorticoids (GC) use, and bone health. Body composition and BMD were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in 104 ambulatory men with MS (mean age: 45.2 years) chronically treated with low-dose GC and in 54 healthy age-matched men. Compared to age-matched controls, MS patients had a significantly lower total body bone mineral content (TBBMC) and BMD at all measured sites except for the radius. Sixty five male MS patients (62.5 %) met the criteria for osteopenia and twenty six of them (25 %) for osteoporosis. The multivariate analysis showed a consistent dependence of bone measures (except whole body BMD) on BMI. The total leg lean mass % was as an independent predictor of TBBMC. The Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), cumulative GC dose and age were independent determinants for BMD of the proximal femur. We conclude that decreasing mobility in male MS patients is associated with an increasing degree of osteoporosis and muscle wasting in the lower extremities. The chronic low-dose GC treatment further contributes to bone loss.

Abstract:The present studyintended to investigate the effectsof nocturnal railway noise on thethree components of attention(alertness, orientation and executivecontrol), and on subjective ratingsof sleep quality, fatigue, wellbeingand discomfort. These effectswere studied in young (mean age =25.8 years) and middle aged (meanage = 52.4 years) subjects, for dayand shift workers. Following aquiet night, a moderately noisynight (40 dBA) and a highly noisynight (50 BA), 38 subjects performedtwo 30-min cognitive tasks(Attention Network Test andStroop task) and filled out a shortquestionnaire. Results show thatnocturnal railway noise worsenedsubjective evaluations, mainly interms of sleep quality and noisediscomfort in a dose-dependentmanner. Young subjects were moresensitive to the effects of noise thanmiddle-aged subjects, as seen bythe self-estimations of sleep qualityand noise discomfort. Furthermore,the shift workers' ratings of sleepquality were independent of noiseconditions. The effects on cognitiveperformance, however, were veryweak. The only decrement observedthe next morning was anincrease in reaction time in theStroop task after the moderatelynoisynight. We found no effect ofnoise on any of the three componentsof attention, suggesting thatnocturnal railway noise, at leastwhen experienced during a singlenight at these noise levels, is unlikelyto produce marked effects onattentional mechanisms. The use ofmore sensitive indicators, such asblink rate or event-related brainpotentials, could allow investigationof possible impairments ofthese attentional networks afternoisy nights.

Abstract:Rail transportation is one of the largest transportations that is widely used in Malaysia. Therefore, many railways have been built in urban and rural areas to improve interstate connectivityin Malaysia. However, train noise generated from train movement can disturb the comfort of nearby residents that live near railways.This studywas conducted nearbythe residential area between the Kluang –Renggam rail line to investigate the noise leveland compare the existing noise level with the guideline from the Department of Environment (DOE) and World Health Organization (WHO) limits. Besides, the impact of this urban pollution to the residents nearby were evaluated by the noise index of noise pollution level (LNP). The results showed that the A-weighted noise levels (LAeq) at all locations exceeded WHO limit while the LAeqat 2 locations (20m and 30m from the rail track) were exceeded the noise limit that set by DOE. Besides, the noise levels captured at the location which 55m away from sound source were nearly approximated to 60 dBA. Theresidents nearby were affected by this urbannoise pollutionwhere the LNP values obtained from this study were approximately to the LNP limits. Thus, alternative strategiesshould be carried out in this area in order to make sure that the community in this area free from the noise disturbance. Further studysuch as developed noise mapping and the questionnaire of annoyance level for the residential area can be implemented to improve the findings on the effect of train noise in the future.

Abstract:The negative effect of traffic noise on human health is indisputable. The article illustrates the magnitude of this problem in selected European capitals using data made available by the European Environment Agency, collected as a part of strategic noise mapping under Directive 2002/49/EC. The purpose of the described studies is to determine the number of people suffering from noise-induced health problems, and to compare the effect of the road noise on human health with the effect of noise from rail vehicles. Studies concern noise annoyance, induced sleep disturbance, and Disability-Adjusted Life Years, or DALY index. Analyses clearly show that environmental pollution from road noise often exceeds environmental pollution from railway noise by a factor of 10. In addition, studies show that in many cities, more than half of the population is exposed to road noise exceeding the acceptable values. The worst of all selected agglomerations with regard to people exposed to road and rail noise is Paris, the capital of France. It should be noted, however, that it has the highest population density of all the analyzed cities and a very well developed transport network. Further studies are needed to characterize the effect of traffic noise on inhabitant health more accurately, using specific indicators allowing to do so.

Abstract:Urban environment noise is a complex mixture of transportation, industrial, household, and recreational noise, which is identified as an emerging environmental threat. Present study monitors and evaluates a noise pollution hotspot: a railway level crossing, where several activities related to transportation noise were involved. Train honking, train movement, road vehicles, and pedestrians contribute to the noise level at a railway level crossing. Train horns are generally performed as train approach railway level crossings and they are mandatorily used to alert road users. However, the train horns are regarded as nuisance to the nearby residents. A detailed evaluation of train horn effectiveness is very much essential in the current contemporary environment. Thus, the main objective of this study is to measure noise levels emanating from train horns at a level crossing with due consideration to train types and climatic conditions. A comprehensive noise monitoring survey was conducted at an access-controlled level crossing. Furthermore, an artificial neural network (ANN)-based railway noise prediction model was developed to forecast maximum ([Formula: see text]) and equivalent (Leq) noise levels. Results revealed that train horn produced impulsive sound signals which fall under high frequency one-third octave bands causing severe irritation to trackside inhabitants. The proposed ANN models produced accurate results for [Formula: see text] and Leq noise levels and this model is identified as a vital tool for railway noise abatement. The results from this study are helpful to the urban planning and development authorities to implement strategic laws and policies to eradicate the urban environment noise.
A survey on exposure-response relationships for road, rail, and aircraft noise annoyance: Differences between continuous and intermittent noise

Abstract:The aim of the present study is to establish exposure-response relationships reflecting the percentage highly annoyed (%HA) as functions of road traffic, railway, and aircraft noise exposure, measured as day-evening-night level (Lden), as well as to elucidate the degree to which the acoustic indicator Intermittency Ratio (IR), which reflects the "eventfulness" of a noise situation, predicts noise annoyance. We conducted a mixed-mode representative population survey in a stratified random sample of 5592 residents exposed to transportation noise all over Switzerland. Source-specific noise exposure was calculated for each floor and each façade based on comprehensive traffic data. Noise annoyance was measured using the ICBEN 11-point scale. The survey was carried out in 4 waves at different times of the year. We hypothesized that in addition to Lden, the effects of noise on annoyance can be better explained when also considering the intensity of short-term variations of noise level over time. We therefore incorporated the acoustic indicator IR in the statistical models. For all noise sources, results revealed significant associations between Lden and %HA after controlling for confounders and independent predictors such as IR (measured over 24 h), exposure to other transportation noise sources, sex and age, language, home ownership, education level, living duration, temperature, and access to a quiet side of the dwelling. Aircraft noise annoyance scored markedly higher than annoyance to railway and road traffic noise at the same Lden level. Railway noise elicited higher percentages of highly annoyed persons than road traffic noise. Results furthermore suggest that for road traffic noise, IR has an additional effect on %HA and can explain shifts of the exposure-response curve of up to about 6 dB between low IR and high IR exposure situations, possibly due to the effect of different durations of noise-free intervals between events. For railway and aircraft noise annoyance, the predictive value of IR was limited.
A novel automatic liver segmentation technique for MR images

Abstract:This paper presents an automatic liver segmentation algorithm based on fast marching and improved fuzzy cluster methods, which can segment liver from abdominal MR images accurately. The developed method is composed of three major steps: first, fast marching method and convex hull algorithm are applied to roughly extract the liver's boundary and topology, which provides a basic estimation for the subsequent calculations; second, an improved fuzzy cluster method, combining with a multiple cycles processing, is designed to refine the segmentation result; third, based on the segmented results, the liver is visualized by Marching Cube method. There are two major difficulties in MRIs liver segmentation: one is that the boundaries between liver and adjacent tissues generally have uniform intensity distributions, which often leads to over segmentation of the liver; the other is that inner vascular inside the liver commonly leads to segmentation leakage. In order to solve these two problems, a prior knowledge based fuzzy cluster method is proposed. Experiments show that the developed method is effective and robust for liver segmentation of MR images.

Abstract:A pilot survey was undertaken to elucidate sleep quality, as well as psycho-social and medical symptoms and mood, among people who had lived for many years in an area with high levels of road traffic noise during night hours and inhabitants of a quiet control area: 106 personal interviews were performed and specific questionnaires on sleep and mood answered by 63 persons during three consecutive days. It was found that both sleep quality and mood (social orientation, activity, wellbeing and extroversion) were depressed in the noisy area as compared with a control area. Symptoms of tiredness, headache and nervous stomach disorders were more frequent. A significant relationship between sensitivity to noise and sleep quality was also found. From this pilot study hypotheses may be formulated about a relationship between environmental noise and different psycho-social and medical symptoms. It is suggested that similar studies on a larger scale are performed to elucidate long-term effects of noise.

Abstract:Industrial noise sources are among the environmental noise sources that are ranked second among the causes of ill health in Europe by the World Health Organization. The aim of this paper is to summarize and review of published information focusing on noise annoyance from industrial activities and mining. A search for articles was performed using the bibliographic databases platforms. The epidemiological evidence shows that environmental noise may be associated with cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, impaired cognitive development in children, mental health, post-irritability, and sleep disturbances. As a result of efforts to minimize the effects of industrial noise on human health, the New South Wales Environment Protection Authority published A Guide to the Noise Policy for Industry in 2017, which sets out recommended noise levels, methods, and procedures for noise management based on the latest scientific evidence. Social networks can be used to assess the population's noise annoyance and to verify the effectiveness of the measures. The industrial noise sources are typically defined by low-frequency noise. Low-frequency noise has very low attenuation and is only slightly affected by obstacles, therefore it can be a major cause of night noise annoyance. An association was confirmed between exposure to low-frequency noise and sleep disturbance, psychological problems, cognitive impairment, increased social conflicts, anxiety, emotional instability, nervousness, and reduced mental performance - concentration, and visual perception. In view of the long tradition of mining and industry, the assessment of noise from these activities from the perspective of its impacts on human health is an inherent part of legislative processes. Abstract:In recent decades, inadequacies between nature and human activities have become one of the most relevant social-economic problems. With the rapid development of industrialisation and urbanisation, the environmental pollution has greatly increased. In the majority of towns and settlements, noise is justly considered as an ecological problem. Th e Paneriai Railway Station was selected for the research as one of the most intensive by the number of passing trains. Th e analysis of the noise level caused by railway traffi c near the junction of the Paneriai Railway Station shows that at low frequencies (31.5–250 Hz) the permissible noise level (PNL) was exceeded by 2–5 dB. Th e fi ndings of research into noise caused by the passing railway transport show that the levels of the equivalent noise exceed by 4–8 dBA the noise levels permissible in living territories. Th e level of noise caused by passing trains is exceeded in the frequency range of 125–4000 Hz. Th e permissible noise level is exceeded by about 8 dB at the frequency of 500 Hz and 7 dB at the frequency of 1000 Hz. Th e generated model of noise dispersion from the railway traffi c to the living environment helped off er the noise reduction walls as a means of improving the living environment.

Annoyance and Activity Disturbance Induced by High-Speed Railway and Conventional Railway Noise: a Contrastive Case Study

Abstract:BACKGROUND:High-speed railway (HR, Electrified railway with service speed above 200 km/h.) noise and conventional railway (CR, Electrified railway with service speed under 200 km/h.) noise are different in both time and frequency domain. There is an urgent need to study the influence of HR noise and consequently, develop appropriate noise evaluation index and limits for the total railway noise including HR and CR noise.METHODS:Based on binaural recording of HR and CR noises in a approximate semi-free field, noise annoyance and activity disturbance induced by maximal train pass-by events in China were investigated through laboratory subjective evaluation. 80 students within recruited 102 students, 40 males and 40 females, 23.9 ± 2.1 years old, were finally selected as the subjects. After receiving noise stimulus via headphone of a binaural audio playback system, subjects were asked to express the annoyance or activity disturbance due to railway noise at a 0-100 numerical scale.RESULTS:The results show that with the same annoyance rating (A) or activity disturbance rating (D), the A-weighted equivalent sound pressure level (LAeq) of CR noise is approximately 7 dB higher than that of HR noise. Linear regression analysis between some acoustical parameters and A (or D) suggests that the coefficient of determination (R2) is higher with the instantaneous fast A-weighted sound pressure level (LAFmax) than that with LAeq. A combined acoustical parameter, LHC = 1.74LAFmax + 0.008LAFmax(Lp-LAeq), where Lp is the sound pressure level, was derived consequently, which could better evaluate the total railway noise, including HR and CR noise. More importantly, with a given LHC, the noise annoyance of HR and CR noise is the same.CONCLUSIONS:Among various acoustical parameters including LHC and LAeq, A and D have the highest correlation with LHC. LHC has been proved to be an appropriate index to evaluate the total railway noise, including both HR and CR. However, it should be pointed out that this study provides suggestive evidence, rather than a final proof. Further study is expected to elucidate conclusions above by additional measurements.
Influencing Factors Identification and Prediction of Noise Annoyance—A Case Study on Substation Noise

Abstract:Noise-induced annoyance is one person’s individual adverse reaction to noise. Noise annoyance is an important basis for determining the acceptability of environmental noise exposure and for formulating environmental noise standards. It is influenced by both acoustic and non-acoustic factors. To identify non-acoustic factors significantly influencing noise annoyance, 40 noise samples with a loudness level of 60–90 phon from 500–1000 kV substations were selected in this study. A total of 246 subjects were recruited randomly. Using the assessment scale of noise annoyance specified by ISO 15666-2021, listening tests were conducted. Meanwhile, basic information and noise sensitivity of each subject were obtained through a questionnaire and the Weinstein’s noise sensitivity scale. Based on the five non-acoustic indices which were identified in this study and had a significant influence on noise annoyance, a prediction model of annoyance from substation noise was proposed by a stepwise regression. Results showed that the influence weight of acoustic indices in the model accounted for 80% in which the equivalent continuous A-weighted sound pressure level and the sound pressure level above 1/1 octave band of 125 Hz were 65% and 15%, respectively. The influence weight of non-acoustic indices entering the model was 20% in which age, education level, noise sensitivity, income, and noisy degree in the workplace were 8%, 2%, 4%, 4%, and 2%, respectively. The result of this study can provide a basis for factors identification and prediction of noise annoyance.

Abstract:<p>With the rapid development of high-speed rail worldwide, particularly in China, which has the longest such network, incidents of its noise's adverse effects have vastly increased. A social survey on community response to high-speed railway noise was conducted in Tianjin, China, from March 2018 to March 2019. A total of 1002 residents, along the Beijing-Tianjin intercity high-speed railway line and Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway line, were interviewed on annoyance and activity interference caused by high-speed railway noise. Consequently, the exposure–response relationship curve was established for gauging the effects of high-speed railway noise on Chinese residents. It showed that the proportion of Chinese residents with high noise annoyance and activity interference increased exponentially with the increase of high-speed railway noise levels. The results proved that background noise had an important effect on the evaluation of noise annoyance. The duration of a single noise event might affect activity disturbance. In addition to acoustic factors, community response to high-speed railway noise was also greatly influenced by subjective characteristics, such as noise sensitivity, satisfaction in the living environment, and satisfaction in housing.</p>
